Autumn Fashion

Stephanie Says…

The latest fashion trends from The Mandurah Life’s resident fashion expert...

Effortless glamour!

Our summer wardrobe will still be getting lots of wear with the warm autumn weather, however, there are plenty of tempting new trends now emerging on the rails for the new season. Transitioning to cooler days is going to be a glamorous affair! Creating a chic and simple silhouette are cropped wide culottes. They are the pant of the season, bringing to mind images of Katharine Hepburn and Lauren Bacall, and can be an easier piece to carry off than imagined. Firstly, look for a soft fabric as the culottes will fall better and create a more flattering line. Make sure the culottes end at the slimmest part of the ankle and wear heels; only those blessed with very long legs can opt for the flats and brogues seen on the runways. On top, a cropped sweater or jacket exposes the waist and balances out the weight of the trousers. Try adding a box clutch too. A relaxed and sophisticated combination for autumn is set to be matching a luxurious sweater in a fine knit with a skirt that would normally be saved for the evening. Short, below the knee or long and slimline to the floor, in a beautifully soft fabric, it’s understated and refined and will feel wonderfully indulgent. Sweaters will also work well in a cable or chunky style, teamed with a pretty feminine skirt, and flats, such as brogues, look just as good as heels or tall skinny ankle boots. The palette for autumn centres on navy, which is less harsh and more forgiving to complexions than black, complemented by neutrals, such as soft greys, camel, nude and white. Navy and camel are also colours for men to be seen in this autumn, as well as indigo, khaki and neutrals. They are all organic and work extremely well with tonal layering. Camel, in particular, will have a strong place in men’s fashion over the coming months. If it’s not quite cold enough outside yet for coats, then simply add a scarf and make sure it’s big. Look out for a chunky knit or a blanket scarf to loosely wrap over a tailored shirt and jacket. Separates, such as pants, sweatshirts and tops, will still be heavily influenced by the sportswear scene. Crank the look up a notch by choosing pieces in luxurious fabrics and pristine finishes. 10

Transform Your Home In 2015 Is 2015 the year you finally give your home that much needed facelift? Looking to freshen up your main living areas or bedrooms but don’t know how to get started? Take a look at these ideas for inspiration and get to work transforming your space.

Paint

The cheapest way (if you do the labour yourself ) to give your home a makeover is to add a new coat of paint to the walls. Neutrals provide universal appeal as they stylishly brighten up spaces, are inoffensive and are easily compatible with most soft furnishings. The tonal painting of alcoves, behind open shelving, indented walls and stairwells adds extra depth and interest.

that can be layered within varying tones, patterns and textures. Look at colour wheels online to find combinations of colours that work well together. For example, Marsala, the Pantone Colour of 2015, is a rich earthy red and is perfect with teal and aqua tones.

Flooring

Consider replacing old tiles with discoloured grouting or patchy outdated carpet with new flooring, or polish up existing floorboards. Try to keep to the same flooring for open plan areas to get that feeling of spaciousness and flow. Vinyl planking is a popular choice currently for the home offering plenty of design options together with a hard wearing solution for families. The same goes for individual rooms, such as bathrooms and bedrooms, be consistent with flooring. Ensure bathrooms share the same tiles and bedrooms the same carpet (children’s rooms may be exempt!).

Lighting

Get rid of your old fashioned pendants and replace them with indirect lighting for a more subtle and warmer ambience. Replace overly bright down lights with those that can be adjusted with dimmer switches. Think about where you need sufficient light to read or work and find a table or floor lamp that not only does the job but also adds a feature to the room. With the cooler months approaching, let in more natural light. Replace old shabby curtains with the fresh clean lines of shutters or venetian blinds in a light neutral colour.

Fabric

Overhaul soft furnishings and accessories and rethink the accent colours that work in your home. Eclectic choices of favourite colours and patterns can feel cosy and homely. If you like consistency and for rooms to flow from one to another, then pick just two or three colours

home & garden Make Use of Space

Open plan living is all the rage but it can mean that certain parts of the house become unused walk-through areas. Make use of nooks and crannies by putting up shelves or add a door or plasterboard wall to areas of dead space to create a study or children’s playroom. This allows your home to adapt according to your changing needs whilst an extra room can also add value.

The Kitchen

Perhaps the most important room in the home, the kitchen/living area is where we regularly spend most of our family time and where we generally entertain. If you’re considering fitting a new kitchen this year, it’s well worth considering the following points:• Take time to budget. Allow plenty of time to plan your new kitchen and consider any building alterations that might be required together with the design, materials and finish. Both the flooring and décor may need to be

Mandurah And Surrounding Areas We Design, Custom Build & Install To Your Needs Since 2000

European Kitchen Technology in W.A.

changed to achieve your look.

• Consider the available space. Plan your kitchen

to maximize storage space that is easily accessed, consider the space available for drawers and pull-out units, and ensure there are sufficient seating areas. If you are purchasing a new oven, don’t forget to consider the design and width of the unit. • Research materials, colours and finishes. Stone benchtops have become increasingly affordable in recent years and have become a common requirement of the modern kitchen. Low quality finishes to benchtops can now even impact on the resale value of your home. Similarly, doors come in a range of different styles and colours. Choose from melamine, vinyl or 2 pack painted units with or without handles. • The finishing touches. Achieve a quality feel with soft-closing doors and drawers and consider creating an ambient mood with LED lighting and/or strips of lights around shelving and kick boards. For further information on installing a new custom built kitchen, visit Merlin Cabinets at Unit 3, 14 Thornborough Road or call 9584 2822.

Talking Property

with Roz Armstrong

Investing in Mandurah Consider this! An established home on a large block, close to the water with side access and walking distance to all amenities and the beach. Sounds like a dream property, doesn’t it! And for investors, who can find one, long term it probably is. Of course, let’s not forget that ‘worst house in the best street’ scenario. In many of our more expensive older suburbs, these homes, often in need of a bit of TLC, will attract similar prices to the big, beautiful, brand new homes in the newer areas with their compromise on block size. And finally, investors should also consider some of the new cottage blocks that are springing up everywhere. Easy care and low maintenance, these make perfect rental homes especially ones with good proximity to transport links. If you are unfamiliar with current availability and pricing in Mandurah, I researched this snapshot of advertised home opens on a recent March weekend. It revealed the following figures and details. Approximately three hundred home opens were advertised with prices ranging from $269,000 to $1.85m. Here are some favourite value-for-money home and rental locations:Twenty-five properties were listed between $200K and $300K. These great value homes were available in areas as diverse as Dudley Park, central Mandurah and Dawesville. Seventy-two properties were listed between $300K and $400K. These well-priced properties

could be found in Dudley Park, Singleton, Greenfields, Madora Bay, Dawesville, Silver Sands and Davey Street, Mandurah. A staggering ninety-four homes were listed between $400K and $500K in areas that included Dudley Park, Lakelands, Erskine, Halls Head, Dawesville and Meadow Springs. Not unsurprisingly, availability then dropped sharply in the higher price brackets with thirty-six homes open for inspection at $500K to $600K, twenty-five at $600K to $700K and sixteen from $700K to $800K. Thirty-three homes were advertised from $900K to $1.85m. The Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) has recently identified housing affordability as an acute issue for first home buyers. They report that 31 per cent of first home buyers used a personal loan or credit card for a home loan deposit, three quarters of them had less than a 20 per cent deposit with many saving for up to five years for a deposit. Having said that, it’s clear from the above figures that there are plenty of good local options for lower price range buyers. With many of these homes representing great long term investment buying, it’s important to do your research and talk to a local expert to find the right home for you. With over 19 years’ experience in the local property market, Roz Armstrong is here to help investors in Mandurah make the right choices. Call Roz at Marina Real Estate on 0417 927 266 or email roz@marinare.com.au for information on current availability. 36

Tax Tips

Free help for the employed and self-employed By Murray Blakers

Why would you even need help? The old way of keeping records has worked fine for years, hasn’t it? It’s not that long ago that you could just put a blank, signed tax return form in an envelope with all of your records and post it off to one of the assessors at the ATO. Today, people still just drop a shoe box full of receipts at a tax agent’s office and low and behold, some weeks later, an assessment will arrive in the mail. However, today everything is so much more automated. So much so that the ATO know all of your income details and can determine your income even before the return is lodged. The expenses and deductions, however, are left up to you. The ATO no longer assesses tax returns as the taxpayer is responsible for his or her own assessment and is expected, it seems, to be an expert in taxation law. The ATO’s role is now to harvest income data from employers, banks and other government agencies and to enforce compliance with the use of penalties. Tax agents make use of the same systems used by the ATO to help clients comply on the income side. They will also help you to become better versed in tax law. Your role is to simply keep the records and documents to support every possible expense and claim made. You must also be the holder of these records so that the ATO can check your claims for at least 5 years. Here are two types of tools that can help with record keeping for both salaried and business taxpayers. New to the scene for wage earners and tradies is a smart phone app, available for both Android and Apple devices, by Sage Handisoft. Called Point and Claim, this free clever app helps record and process tax deductions and evidence claims. It does this by reading, summarising and saving receipts using a

smart phone’s camera. The app then copies your records into ‘the cloud’ ensuring they are never lost. The information can then be exported to be used by a tax agent. If, like me, you regularly drop your phone in the estuary, when you get a new one just re-download the app and your receipts can be recovered from the cloud. The app even reads the text on receipts and recognises what they might be for. It also helps categorise receipts into files for motor vehicle expenses, stationery, travel or any other category. It can even record if a receipt might be needed for warranty in the future. For the small to medium business operator, BAS preparation, income tax and record keeping can be costly and time consuming. This takes you away from your primary role as manager of your business. We recommend looking at software packages that can make use of online bank data feeds to automate these roles as much as possible. Using automated systems can cut record keeping and processing time by as much as 80% whilst also helping to find tax savings. While some software can be downloaded and used for free, the best use of this type of software needs demonstrating. So that opportunities are not lost, we offer a free demonstration to explain the best way to use the systems that we recommend. By helping taxpayers access these tools, our clients have improved the quality of their records and have ultimately achieved better tax outcomes. On The Drawing Board with Boyd Oakes

Engaging the services of an Architect or Building Designer to design your shiny new home might, to some, seem to be a rather expensive luxury. The reality, however, is that whether building from scratch or renovating, a Building Designer can add value, reduce costs and help save a great deal of potential heartache along the way. Building your own home is likely to be the most personal and probably the most costly experience of your life. In other words, it’s important to get it right. It’s often a time of great stress, requiring a significant input of time and effort on your part. Which builder do you entrust your project and budget to and can they actually deliver the exact home required? So before you start meeting the hundreds of different project and custom home builders in the market, why not put yourself in control from the outset. Having your own plans drawn up by a Building Designer gives you the opportunity to tout your plans around to different builders and shop around for the best price. No more having to compromise your vision to fit in with an off-the-shelf project home design. It’s also not as expensive as you would think. Typically, the cost of having plans drawn up will be between 3 and 5% of the total build. A relatively small outlay to achieve the desired

effect. And it’s not just the Architect’s design skills that come to the fore during the process. Your Building Designer can act as an impartial adviser when it comes to selecting a builder, will have extensive knowledge on building precedents, can liaise with the local shire council and will also be able to steer you through the maze of sustainability, insulation and energy performance requirements. At Boyd Design, we go a step further. We guarantee that are designs will come in on time and under budget. We offer a written guarantee that if the builder entrusted in the project is unable to build the home within budget then we will alter the plans to suit. In addition to that, each home designed by our team comes complete with a complementary swimming pool and landscape design. Let’s face it, in Western Australia we spend just as much time outdoors as we do in. Remember, good design not only offers value but complete peace of mind. Until next time,

Boyd. To view a selection of stunning house designs from Boyd Design, check out the photo gallery on Facebook, visit the website or just Google ‘Boyd Design Mandurah’. 40

Mercedes-Benz B-Class Popular premium compact gets facelift

A decade on from the launch of the original B-Class and 3 years after the release of the MK2 version, the 2015 B-Class facelift has arrived down under, adding an exciting new dimension to an already highly competitive compact sports tourer market. The MK2 version of the B-Class was, of course, a significant step in the right direction for Mercedes-Benz. After a somewhat lukewarm response to the original model, the 2012 model sported curvaceous lines, poised looks

“added visual impact and plenty of extra features as standard” and delivered much improved performance levels. Wider, lower, longer and sleeker than its predecessor, it took much of its design cues from the luxurious R-Class and featured a vastly improved cabin layout. It was also the first Mercedes-Benz to sit on the all new chassis that had been specifically designed to carry the next generation of new MercedesBenz small cars. In short, it revitalised its premium compact brand. Building on that success, the all-new 2015 facelift model offers added visual impact and plenty of extra features as standard. Its stylish new look features reshaped headlights in line with the current Mercedes-Benz design ethics, an updated front bumper with larger air intakes, revised tail lights with additional LEDs and a reshaped rear bumper elegantly housing the B-class’s exhaust outlets. Inside, the cabin has also had a makeover with all models receiving a larger, 8-inch tablet-style display screen together with updated, luxurious trims.

However, it’s the added standard features that really hit the spot. The entry level B180 now includes satellite navigation and push-button start whereas the B200 models add keyless start, a new improved navigation system, LED

motoring headlights, and blind spot assist. The top of the range B250 is now also fitted with the Mercedes 4Matic permanent all-wheel-drive system together with an ambient lighting package and anti-theft system. Engine options remain the same on the 2015 B-Class with three petrol and one diesel variants still available. However, a series of small modifications has managed to improve both performance and fuel economy in some models with the 90kW/200Nm 1.6L turbo petrol B180 now just over a second quicker from 0 to 100km/h while also improving its

combined cycle fuel economy figure to 5.5L/100km. Both the 115kW/250Nm 1.6L turbo petrol B200 and 100kW/300Nm 2.1L turbo diesel B200 CDI have also improved their fuel stats by 0.6L and 0.5L per 100kms respectively. A timely tweak for an already impressive package, the new B-Class is well worth a closer look. For further information on the all new Mercedes B-Class or any other car in the Mercedes-Benz range, contact Southpoint Star on 9586 5388.

BMW 2 Series Convertible Rear-wheel drive soft top now available

It’s been a little over 12 months since the launch of the 2-Series Coupé, BMW’s direct replacement for the 1 Series Coupé, and quickly following in its slipstream comes the final piece in the range’s jigsaw, the BMW 2 Series Convertible. As the successor to the world’s biggest selling compact luxury convertible (the 1 Series Convertible sold over 130,000 units worldwide), the 2 Series Convertible certainly has a tough act to follow but let’s not forget that BMW has been doing this for a while now. The German luxury car manufacturer’s steady stream of stylish compact convertibles stretching back over almost 50 years is widely regarded as comprising some of the most iconic cars ever built. Their heady mix of open top motoring, luxury and performance has long appealed to the discerning car buying public come rain or shine. Larger and sitting closer to the ground than the outgoing 1 Series model, the 2 Series Convertible’s more purposeful and powerful looking stance adds a striking new dimension to the Bavarian giant’s smallest coupé. And, although it might the smallest coupé in the range, the extra cabin space provides plenty of extra comfort and extra practicality. Some

things don’t change, though. Unlike, its main competitor, the front or all-wheel drive Audi A3, the 2 Series Convertible comes with the traditional BMW rear-wheel drive set-up. In other words, as well as looking like a sports car it’s designed to drive like one. As with the 2 Series Coupé down under, the 2 Series Convertible comes with 3 petrol variants in the range, although there is no room for a diesel option at present. The entry level model is the 220i Convertible, a four-cylinder in-line petrol engine, which features BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. Delivering 135 k/W of power and 270 N/m of torque, the car speeds from 0-100 km/h in just 7.6 seconds while achieving an average fuel consumption of just 6.9L per 100kms. Next up, the 228i Convertible extracts even more “as well as looking like a power from its 1997cc four-cylinder in-line sports car it’s designed to petrol engine, delivering 180 k/W of power drive like one” and 350 N/m of torque. This results in a sizzling top speed of 250 km/h and a mad dash from 0-100 km/h in just 6 seconds. Fuel consumption is not to be scoffed at either, averaging out at 7L per 100kms. However, for those striving for even more punch, the top of the range M235i Convertible delivers in spades. With 240 k/W of power and 450 N/m of torque, this brute of a car hits 100 km/h from a standing start in a barnstorming 5 seconds flat! So what of the roof itself? As with all convertibles on the market, technology continues to move on at a pace and the 2 Series convertible again raises the bar. Its newly developed, ... cont. pg 48 47

electrically powered fabric top with additional insulation takes just 20 seconds to close and can now be shut even while driving at speeds of up to 50 km/h. It’s also available in 3 different colours; the standard black, anthracite with a silver effect or in brown also with a silver effect. With a huge array of standard features, including electric power steering, anti-dazzle high beam assist, adaptive headlights, parking assist, rear view camera, cruise control, climate

control, hands-free telephone facility, USB audio interface and BMW radio, including iDrive operating system, the 2 Series Convertible is a worthy addition to BMW’s long list of classy soft tops. Golf Tips

with Craig Tapp

Hi, everyone! Hope you are playing well and enjoying your golf! Many readers would know that I spend most of my days loitering around the driving range and short game facilities like some lost hobo trying to help different players with their games. If a non-golfer was to eavesdrop into some of the conversations, they would swear they were in another country or even on another planet for that matter. As a coach, I try to keep things extremely simple but this doesn’t stop the golf tragic and weekend warrior from spinning out of control with information overload. In the search for the perfect golf swing, I hear talk of swing planes, shaft loading, forearm supination, core strengthening and, thanks to Tiger Woods, even glute activating. Yes, that’s right, glute activating! Everyone has an opinion on shaft flex, launch angles and the perfect spin rate for their driver. They also talk about creating lag in the swing and the importance of sustaining the line of compression. But no one ever talks about their feet! Yes, I believe good old footwork is the key to better golf. I told you that I like to keep things simple! And, after listening to all the rubbish that gets thrown around, by simply watching the swings I see on the range, I’m even more convinced about this. Most look like a cross between Elvis Presley and someone losing complete control of their body!

If you want to create a more powerful and reliable hit on the ball, you must understand how the feet work in the golf swing. On the backswing, both feet must stay perfectly flat on the ground with minimal knee movement as well. This allows you to turn your upper body and get your back at the target. At this stage, there is no real movement of weight. That’s right; you do not need to transfer your weight to the back foot on the backswing. The most efficient way to swing the club is to have your weight evenly distributed from set up through to the top of the backswing. On the downswing, we then rotate our pivot (belly button) and shift all our weight to the front foot with our back foot finishing way up on the toe. Not only does this create a lot more power by creating a more centrifugal force from using the ground forces, but also stops any lateral movement in the swing, thereby helping to eliminate the dreaded topped and fat shots. So all you need to do is less dancing, a lot less thinking and simply get your footwork right in order to watch your shots improve. Good luck and good golfing!

If you’ve decided that 2015 is the year you finally get fit then why not take up inline skating at The Rink? One of the state’s leading skating centres, The Rink, is located just an hour south of Mandurah. Hello We’re Amanda & Melinda, your personal travel managers “Choosing the perfect holiday for the whole family can tend to bamboozle some due to the smorgasbord of options. For this reason, savvy travellers with kids in tow are increasingly opting for cruises, which can take a lot of the pain out of organising a trip away.” Cruise Holidays

The allure of cruising is easy to see – you only have to unpack once and all your transport, accommodation, food, entertainment and sightseeing are all in one place.

especially in the evenings and sometimes they just need to escape the noise and over stimulation of a large cruise liner. Spacious rooms offer a great refuge, especially for the very young.

There are a few things you should have top-of-mind before paying the deposit on your next family cruise. While price and package features are both important factors, there are some far more basic, practical considerations.

If you are travelling with extended family or a friend’s family, investigate availability of interconnecting cabins and proximity to lifts, dining and recreation areas for more frail family members.

Firstly, it’s always best to book as early as you can as larger staterooms are at a premium and sell out quickly on most ships. Children will tend to spend more time than you think in a room,

Chill Out: An Antarctic Odyssey

By Brian Gaull

With a long held desire to undertake scientific research in Antarctica, Brian Gaull finally realises his dream when he arrives at Mawson Station in his role as a geophysicist. The memoirs of his time in this exceptionally remote part of the world are laid out with impressive detail in Chill Out and are, quite simply, awe inspiring. In total, Gaull spent sixteen months away from his family, three months longer than originally intended. With underlying problems in his marriage, the reader will often feel incredulous that Gaull made the decision to leave his two young sons for such a large chunk of time, however, as the memoirs progress, it is clear that this dilemma was never resolved in the author’s mind and was a source of constant anxiety. The reader is propelled through the book from one experience to another with eagerness to

uncover more scientific revelations, recounts of life versus death situations, descriptions of majestic scenery and insights into the psyche of the men stationed far from home. Chill Out is raw and honest, and written with an overriding passion. It is a fascinating book of extremes, confronting us with not only extreme location and conditions but also extreme emotions.

Win a Copy of Chill Out! Don’t miss this! We have 10 copies to give away of south west-based author Brian Gaull’s fascinating first book, Chill Out! To go into the draw to win your very own copy, all you have to do is answer the following question:-

What was the name of the station in Antarctica at which Brian Gaull worked? To be entered into the prize draw, either email the answer to this question to editorial@blueskymedia.net.au or post the answer to Chill Out Competition, Blue Sky Media, PO Box 600, Mandurah, 6210. Please include a contact telephone number and your address. Closing date for entries is Friday, 29th May, 2015, one entry per person, please.

Purchase a Copy of Chill Out! Don’t want to risk not winning a copy? Hardback and paperback copies of Chill Out are also available direct from the author. Call 0448 550601 or email brian.gaull@westnet.com.au. 56

ARTIST REVIEW

Corrine Rapley

became my main reference for the final pastel or acrylic painting, referring back to the photographs only for specific information.

Corrine Rapley studied Art Fundamentals at Pilbara TAFE in 2004 and has been earning highly commended accolades and winning painting awards since 1994. Living for fifteen years in the picturesque Pilbara before relocating to the lush water laden estuary in Bouvard, it is not surprising that Rapley has a deep appreciation of natural environments and is inspired by her experiences within these landscapes.

Colorado artist Stephen Quiller has had a great influence on your work practice. How so? Stephen Quiller has devised his own colour wheel. I respond to his theories on how different colour relationships work and now make conscious decisions about my colour palette for each painting and mix my own colours from a core set. What is driving your practice at the moment?

Corrine, why was this the right moment for you to apply for an artist residency?

In the past I would please everyone else but me. Over time you get seduced by the positive praise for your work and are not so confident to try something new in case your work is rejected. Now I am letting the paintings speak to me. I introduced collage to my work and have been experimenting with more of Quiller’s techniques and just think, well, let’s see where it goes! I am still doing the detail in the foreground, but am enjoying the new spontaneity.

I had not been painting for some time and my confidence was very low. Gradually, through my job at Jacksons, I met other artists and artist groups in town who gave me the encouragement and support I needed to recommit to my practise. The residency applications for CASM came out but I did not think I was good enough. In the end I told myself that I had nothing to lose and was both shocked and excited to be accepted.

Where do you see this residency taking you and is it an experience you would recommend?

Tell us about your dominant creative processes prior to moving to Mandurah.

I hope to acquire more skills and improve my techniques. I am hopeful that the residency will open some doors for me including the ability to become more sustainable with my practice. I am also hoping that the opportunity to exhibit at CASM will assist in my work becoming more widely recognised. I would definitely recommend this experience. The main benefit is that you have the ability to block everything out and concentrate on your art. When I Close My Eyes

Corrine Rapley in Studio A at CASM

limits and allowing the seed to find its own rhythm and direction, the total project took two years of research, photographic experimentation, interviews and editing before settling into its current form. It became obvious during this collaborative journey that the extensive interviews being conducted with each subject were of equal importance to the visual imagery developing within the photo shoots. The narratives provided a very human and intimate connection between the audience and the subjects, drawing us into their lives and experiences through their personal yoga practice. Some narratives are brief reflections while others plunge into a deep ravine of emotion. As example: one text discusses the sense of physical attainment through yoga practice. Another, quite humorously, discusses the awareness and confrontation of self-ego through yoga, while yet another shares a past pathway of suicide and the mental and emotional strength gained through yoga practice. The interpretive prints complete the puzzle, linking either literally or abstractly to the documentary images by the narratives. Dragun explained during his well-received artist talk at CASM that these images were attained by projecting sourced images through an old slide projector onto models in a completely darkened studio while he hung precariously upside down on a ladder pointing the projector under Montagu’s instruction! Eight Paths, One Journey is exhibiting at CASM until 8 March.

Eight Paths, One Journey The pranayama breath moves through the body from deep in the belly, moving slowly up to fill the lower ribcage and then spreads higher into the chest, armpits and throat before parting with a slow steady exhalation leaving the body feeling calm, refreshed and thoughtful. This is akin to the experience recently delivered at CASM through the collaborative photographic exhibition Eight Paths, One Journey by Matt Dragun and Nic Montagu. Now in its seventh year since the inaugural exhibition, the touring show managed by Art On The Move recently piqued the interest and imagination of Mandurah audiences through the thoughtful combination of documentary style images, practitioner narrative and interpretive projection imagery. The exhibition consists of 55 images, consisting of 27 colour-toned lith prints un-sequentially aligned with 24 black and white lith prints. Of these, half are of documentary style, juxtaposing the nine practitioners in states of complete poise, against or above, or emerging into or from a multitude of varied and thought-provoking urban and natural settings. Included are poses aligned with derelict buildings, twisted on dirty, paved sidewalks, amongst busy cafes, pressed into humid, reflective puddles, encircled by dynamic skateboarders and bridged on a table top of an inner suburban laundromat. Dragun does not see himself as a creative director, more like a bloke with an idea which he shared with boyhood friend, now commercial photographer, Nic Montagu. Montagu was equally intrigued with the concept; documenting yoga practitioners who have found ‘a place for the ancient eastern practise of Yoga in their 21st century western lives.’ Not setting time

The Complete Guide Rockridge Press

It’s often said that the Western Australian climate bears a strong resemblance to the sun-filled summer days experienced by the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. That being the case, perhaps we should also take inspiration from the area’s unique cuisine. A traditional Mediterranean-style diet has long been recognised as a super healthy way to eat and The Mediterranean Diet for Beginners, published by Rockridge Press, is a complete guide aimed at those wishing to swap less healthy habits for a ‘heart-healthy diet’. In the book, a variety of dishes are showcased from the coasts of Italy, France, Morocco, Spain and Greece, enabling the reader to prepare colourful and delicious meals. There is also a clear point made in the guide that the Mediterranean ‘diet’ is not about depriving oneself of choice but instead is a lifestyle that values a variety of wholesome fresh food to be appreciated and savoured with good company. 60

Book Review Gatekeeper

By Mike Smart A disturbing beginning to Mike Smart’s self-published novel, Gatekeeper, is wholly suitable as a precursor to what unfolds over the course of the book. A UK entrepreneur and highly successful businessman, this is Smart’s first entry into the world of novel writing and the result does not fail to excite, horrify and enthral. Events around the world are leading towards the breakdown of society due simply to the basic human vice of greed. One delusional businessman may have some answers, if he can be caught in time. This fast-paced thrilling ride of a plot is balanced by detail that gives depth and authenticity to characters and events. The reader gets to catch their breath

while they try to ascertain whether or not such drama could be any more than fiction. Using an impressive knowledge of computer technology and thorough research to back up his plot, Smart has produced a book that is absolutely believable and, as such, quite disconcerting. It is a hard job not to be submerged in this exhilarating tale. Now available at amazon.com

Introducing‌ VascuLyse

A safe, non-invasive treatment for embarrassing skin blemishes

Clusters of tiny dilated blood vessels that are visible through the skin, broken capillaries are the most common type of skin blemish. More prevalent as we grow older due to our skin losing its elasticity, broken capillaries are also formed by excessive sun exposure, through drinking alcohol, by eating hot and spicy foods and smoking. VascuLyse is the very latest non-invasive technology designed to treat skin blemishes. In addition to permanently removing broken capillaries, it also treats ruby points on the body, skin tags on the face, neck and body, blotches on the face and upper chest, milia on the face and cholesterol deposits around the eyes.

Through the use of a disposable, sterile stylus that gently touches the skin the VascuLyse uses a mild current to induce coagulation within the damaged capillary. The treatment, referred to as Capillary Coalysis, leads to the unsightly capillaries being absorbed and permanently eliminated by the body. Relatively painless, some patients have been known to experience a slight pricking sensation, sessions are between five and fifteen minutes in length and most conditions are effectively treated in between one and three sessions. Skin reaction after treatments is minimal and any reaction completely disappears after a few days leaving truly amazing results. VascuLyse is now available in Mandurah at Total Skin and Body Centre Day Spa. For further information, call 9535 4530 or visit them at Unit 2/2A, Peel Street (next to the Atrium Hotel).

DNA Testing for Dogs

Why your canine’s make-up matters

By Sarah Cooper

If you own a mixed breed dog then, much like most other owners of similar dogs, you will have probably wondered at some point what the exact genetic make-up of your pooch is. Well, help is now at hand. With the growth in availability of accurate DNA testing it is now possible to get an extremely accurate overview of your dog’s genes. Results are even more accurate if your dog has a purebred parent or grandparent. So why is DNA testing useful? Firstly, by understanding the genetic make-up of your dog, owners can be forewarned over possible future health issues common in the breed. With some breeds of dog more susceptible to certain diseases, an accurate DNA test can be used by a veterinary clinic to help keep an eye out for symptoms or potential risks. Information taken from the test can also be used to tailor a specific diet to a dog. For example, with some breeds more susceptible to arthritis than others, owners can now put their pets on a diet containing ingredients that protect against the progression of the disease. The test can also help owners more accurately predict the dog’s target genetic adult weight range. Finally, a DNA test can help pet owners plan ahead for expected litters. Knowledge of a dog’s make-up can not only provide a more accurate prediction on the size of its puppy, it can also help to forecast the amount of energy the newborn will have - an important consideration in the case of a predominantly terrier mixed breed! At Pinjarra Veterinary Hospital, we use the Advance mixed breed identification DNA test. This test is specifically designed to look for the combination of ancestral breeds in mixed breed dogs. Where pure breed dogs are concerned, generally the report will simply indicate the pure strain of the breed in question. However, although our sample

animal health

database covers 200 plus breeds and comprises more than 10,000 samples in total, there are several cases in which pure breed dogs may not be reported as such. For instance, if the breed wasn’t bred within Australia, then it is not always possible to pick up the breed signature as foreign lines often have very different genetic signatures. In addition, if there has been a very isolated breeding line for the pure breed, there may not be enough coverage of that breed’s gene pool to identify the dog as purebred. Whatever your dog’s age or background, feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Sarah Cooper is a veterinary nurse at Pinjarra Veterinary Hospital, 1754 Pinjarra Road, Pinjarra. Open Mon to Fri 7am to 6pm and Saturday 8am to 12pm, the hospital also provides an after-hours’ emergency service. Call 9531 1555 or find them on Facebook.

Lunchtime Indulgence Two dozen oysters & bottle of house red, white or bubbles. $65 7 days, 11am-5pm.

Pulled pork in a hot and smoky barbecue sauce is a dish that originated in America but over the years, recipes have been tweaked and it is easy to add or swap in ingredients depending on your taste. Try replacing the apple cider vinegar and chicken stock with one cup of ginger ale or beer. Or, instead of dried thyme, add a teaspoon of ground cumin. This dish also offers great value as pork shoulder is a relatively cheap cut of meat to buy to feed the family on.
