Add some flamboyancy!

Stephanie Says…

orange through to more vivid tones that will be the colour of choice for pieces this summer. Bags and shoes in tan complement perfectly. For summer beauty, faces get the pared back look so that makeup is natural and appears ‘barely-there’. Highlighters and illuminators do a great job in boosting radiance and if a little colour is required, then add blush and balm with sorbet-like orangey hues. Hair should be effortless and perfectly ‘undone’. The major trend for summer is to embrace your own hair type and pull off a natural look without the use of heat styling. A regular conditioning mask is therefore a summer essential!

With all the bold ideas that appeared on international catwalks for summer, we can expect a full-on season of extreme looks. Have fun with the trends and be prepared to be the centre of attention! Summer just wouldn’t be summer without showing off some flesh and this season it’s the turn of the shoulder. An off-the-shoulder top with a high waisted mid-skirt or pants is Naudic a feminine and chic combination. There are at Bather Bar plenty of jumpsuits and dresses cut to bare shoulders too and an asymmetrical style will look great for the warm evenings. In contrast, expect to also see statement sleeves this summer. Big and voluminous in sheer fabric, sleeves add fluidity to an outfit whether they are bunched up to the elbow, asymmetric or bell. Fringing was around in the cooler months and is coming back for the summer. In the past, it has created an all-over bohemian look but this summer’s fringing adds a modern edge to simply and elegantly cut jackets, pants, dresses and skirts. Look out for it on bags too for a more subtle way to wear the trend. Any lace pieces you picked up for spring will still be perfectly acceptable for summer. But it’s broderie in structured pieces that will be the hit of the season. It’s geometric and modern while lace can be flowery and delicately pretty. White and black are set to be the favourites for broderie in tops, skirts and dresses but expect to see bright colours too. And when it comes to bright colours, it’s all about orange. There are plenty of brights around but it’s the deep hues of burnt 8

Outdoor Living Potted Plants

Nothing beats the feeling of lazing in a private alfresco area especially if it’s full of colourful and fragrant plants. What’s more, it’s an easy morning’s project to plant up some pots for summer and an excellent activity to help keep children busy – they can even be in charge of watering duties! The ideal flowers for summer include geraniums, marigolds, miniature dahlias, dwarf bougainvillea, frangipanis, nasturtiums, echinacea and Californian poppies. Go for an explosion of different vibrant colours or pick complementary shades to go with the home’s current outdoor furnishings and decorations. Consider incorporating fragrant flowers to add an indulgent resort-style feel to the area for

the warm balmy evenings. Sweet gardenias, intense star jasmine, murraya with its orange blossom-like perfume and classic lavender all produce gorgeous scents as well as beautiful flowers. Plus, choose the herbs you plan to use when cooking and plant them up too. These will give a rustic feel to an outdoor table setting and provide the finishing touch on dishes when dining alfresco. When it comes to choosing the pots, make sure they all have plenty of holes for drainage. Avoid plastic as these pots become far too hot in the sun, leading to the roots of the plants getting damaged. Glazed ceramic and stone pots help to keep the potting mix and root ... cont. pg 22 20

system at a constant temperature and also don’t dry out too quickly. Terracotta pots, on the other hand, can dry out quite quickly so use these for plants needing good drainage. Just remember to water frequently. Place the pots together in groups as this helps to help keep plants cooler as well as increasing humidity. Lightly mulch them and try placing

them on saucers of moist sand as this will also keep roots cooler. When it comes to watering, it’s best done when the weather is at its coolest. As the summer goes on, rearrange the pots and add new additions so that your potted garden is constantly changing and evolving.

Fredrick Collection Discover unique,

individual quality furniture

With its unrivalled selection of unique and stylish furniture, homewares and accessories, new Dunsborough-based furniture gallery Fredrick Collection is a must-visit this summer. Owner Chris Wheeldon has travelled the world to bring Fredrick Collection to the south west and the timeless mix of pieces on display offers an exquisite choice of furniture and design for the home. The gallery derives its name from Chris’ father, Fredrick. Born in an era of understated style, Fredrick was a man who prided himself on his appearance no matter what the occasion. Rarely seen without a suit and tie, a style and attitude created from an era of both hardship and fortitude, The Fredrick Collection draws inspiration from his legacy. His presence is also felt in the level of service provided at the gallery. The team prides itself on delivering old fashioned, friendly service, by getting to know the customer, understanding their requirements, and tailoring design ideas to meet their needs. There’s a huge choice of styles available to choose from, including French Provincial, Hampton Coastal, Country Cottage, Shabby Chic, Vintage, Retro, Eclectic and Industrial. Fredrick Collection believes a home is inspired by the owner’s individual style and is a reflection of his or her personality. A blending of quirky pieces in the home creates interest and makes a statement about the owner’s personal taste. These pieces create a different story each time they are used or viewed. Decorating a home can, therefore, be an inspiring

adventure and whether by mixing very different styles, or teaming an antique piece of furniture with a unique piece, or by adding beautiful ceramic vases or sculptures to create interest, it’s a journey that should be enjoyed. By being prepared to be a bit different, and by introducing an element of warmth and charm into the home, a perfect balance is created between luxury, elegance, comfort and style, and it is then that the buyer’s true personality is reflected. Visit the gallery at Unit 1, 26 Faure Lane, Dunsborough, and find a piece that becomes intrinsically part of you and your family’s life while embracing the south west lifestyle. Also, go online at www.fredrickcollection.com.au, or visit the store’s Facebook and Instagram pages to keep up to date with the latest news and arrivals. Open 6 days and by appointment, a layby service is available and a delivery service to Mandurah if pre-booked. Call 9759 1146 for further information.

John Tonkin College

Contemporary curriculum offers opportunities for all

A leading independent public school with two campuses located in the Peel region, John Tonkin College caters for students from Year 7 through to Year 12. Formed through the merger of Mandurah High School and Mandurah Senior College, the school commenced operations in 2012 and has quickly established a highly regarded contemporary learning environment. With a rapidly changing outside world, the school prides itself on providing its students with the necessary set of required skills to adapt and succeed in their chosen careers. To achieve these goals, a range of programmes has been introduced at the school to provide students with opportunities not always readily available in secondary education in Western Australia. John Tonkin College believes secondary students need goals to aspire to and programmes are specifically designed to motivate students and keep them focussed on achieving their potential. In 2015, the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) programme was introduced. Within AVID, students are expected to maintain high levels of organisation and a consistent approach to note-taking was also introduced. This programme continues to develop and is a strong motivational aspect of life at the school. In Year 9, students complete the Morrisby Career profiling programme, which involves a full range of psychometric testing that is then analysed and shared with the student and

parent. The profile highlights individual students’ strengths and suggests career pathways suitable to them. Parents have been highly impressed by this programme as it assists them in guiding their children. In 2015, the school went into partnership with local not-for-profit organisation The Makers in setting up Make Place, a collaborative space in central Mandurah where local entrepreneurs work and foster partnerships. John Tonkin College students have had the opportunity to participate in programmes delivered from this vibrant and inspiring business environment. Students from across the Peel region enrol in the JTC Surf Science Programme, a Department of Education approved specialist programme. Highly motivated students participate in marine outdoor pursuits and have a strong focus in marine environmental development and sustainability. This programme leads to university pathway studies in Years 11 and 12. On 19th February 2016, JTC will be holding a community Picnic Under the Stars as a celebration of its Aspirations Programmes. The 2015 Young West Australian of the Year and former student of the school, Rhys Williams, will attend as a guest speaker to launch the 2016 initiatives. Patterns and Maths By Louise Clark Most children love discovering patterns. From an early age, they recognise patterns in the stories we read to them and they get to recognise what is coming next in a rhyme or song because of the repetition. Children recognise patterns that occur in nature, in their daily routine, with beads in a necklace, on the soles of their shoes and even with the windows on a skyscraper. Patterns are everywhere and it is fun for children to notice them and to learn how to predict what is coming next. Without knowing it, these children are actually doing maths, naturally, and enjoying it. This is because finding, observing and understanding patterns are essential maths skills. Many mathematical concepts that children will come across at school are based on patterns, such as counting in 2’s, 5’s or 10’s, or times tables. By helping our children to recognise and decode patterns, we can also help them to grasp and enjoy working with the maths concepts that they will come across at school. For pre-school aged children, try making patterns with food when making a snack together. Find leaves, seeds and petals in the garden to arrange and stick onto a piece of card. Cut up thick kitchen sponges to make stamps and create a stamped pattern with

paint, or use cookie cutters or a melon baller to make potato stamps for your child. Talk about the morning routine and work out which activity comes next. It is also fun, and excellent for predicting skills, for children to point out when a pattern is wrong. So try giving your child opportunities to do this. Number games are another favourite with children that help with learning about patterns. There are many variations of the ‘stand up, sit down’ game, such as standing up and counting in 1’s and sitting down once a multiple of 5 or 10 occurs. Print off an online hundred chart and ask your child to colour in the even numbers or a certain multiple. Talk about the squares of colour that start to appear. Choose another colour for a different multiple and talk about why some numbers have been coloured twice. However you choose to play with patterns, there is no doubt that it will help your child to discover, observe, think, experiment and create. It’s an effective way for a child to get a great start in maths. Louise Clark has studied and taught across many age groups in the British and Australian schooling and college systems.

EXHIBITION RETROSPECTIVE

IndoChina, A Trail of Inspiration by Vicki Bulliard. 9 October to 1 November 2015 IndoChina – a land where time is measured by embroidery stitches and the click of a weaving shuttle. “Wander through the rural villages of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia and you will catch a glimpse of a world steeped in tranquillity, tradition and a blaze with colour. Take the time to stop, and you will find a textile and craft lovers paradise - where time is measured by the cycle of crops, embroidery stitches and the constant click of a weaving shuttle.” - 2WORLDTOURS.COM.AU Always interested in the ‘back stories’ of places visited, I knew when I read this advertisement that this was an adventure for me. Thus, armed with my paintbox and sketchbooks I embarked on a trip with seven others that would take me from the awe inspiring temples of Angkor in Cambodia to the charming laneways and textile villages of Luang Prabang and on to vibrant Vietnam, with its colourful cities and peaceful mountain villages. Across the regions, the women I met were truly inspirational not only for the beautiful textiles they created but for their passion in learning and passing on their ancient crafts to the next generation. In Cambodia, the intricate Ikat silks and beautiful muted colours of their traditional dyes were stunning - and given Cambodia’s history it was amazing to find their traditional crafts surviving and being revived. In Laos I found inspiration in the silk and organic cotton fabrics, woven and dyed using techniques and patterns handed down from mother to daughter for generations. Vietnam was a place of great contrasts. Women pounded the bustling streets of Hanoi, from dawn to dusk selling everything from kitchenware to spring rolls,

while women in the mountain villages worked the fields and tended to the needs of the family. Each when at home, still painstakingly sewing and embroidering their clothes by hand. In the mountains, every village and clan dressed uniquely. From the Red Hmong women who collect hair and wove it with red threads into amazing wigs, to the Flower Hmong ladies with gorgeous floral embroidered skirts and black cone like hats. The Lu with rich tapestry skirts contrasted the Black Hmong with their fabulous indigo outfits and lastly the Black Dao with their enormous black turbans and richly embroidery trousers and jackets. One of the loveliest cultural stories I learned was about the colourful and unique children’s hats made by minority group mothers. A hat was said to provide each child protection from evil spirits so it was adorned with colourful appliques, embroidery and trinkets so when evil spirits looked down on the children they simply saw colourful flowers and left them alone. The really special memories I brought home were found in the times I spent sitting with the local women chatting and learning about their traditional crafts. The smile of 86 year old Grandma Chong as she taught me the secrets of Tai weaving, and the laughs I shared with 22 year old Mai Linh and her friends when we spent a day learning about the techniques of Red Dao embroidery and their unique culture will stay with me forever. Book Release Maybe I’ll Write More Later ….Maybe By Patricia Ilich

Tragedy is no stranger to Peter but how can any son comprehend the news that instead of welcoming back his parents from the holiday of a lifetime, he will instead be required to organise a funeral and deal with official reports and a company’s denial of culpability. Four years later and an intriguing stranger appears at Peter’s door with a compelling story about a miracle. Although Peter’s best friend, Luke, believes it to be a con, Peter decides to place his trust in the stranger, Fiona. BMW X1

All new SUV ups the ante

Who would have thought that just 6 years ago the small luxury SUV market would become such a key battleground for the world’s leading car manufacturers? Back then, it was a market that didn’t exist, that was, of course, until the launch of the Mk1 version of the BMW X1 in 2009. Now in case you hadn’t noticed, we have the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Lexus NX plus a few others all clamouring for your attention. With close to three-quarters of a million units sold to date, there is no doubting the X1 has been an unqualified success. So successful was the car on launch, in fact, that BMW was even rushed into creating extra production capacity to keep up with demand. So with the launch of the all new X1, has BMW come up with the goods again?

sockets, and the iDrive operating system with its 6.5-inch display integrated into the instrument panel. In addition, the Advantage, Sport Line, xLine and M Sport packages offer owners the opportunity to individually spec each car according to taste. Engine-wise, the second generation X1 line-up features a completely new selection of two petrol and three diesel units, ranging from 150 to 231hp and delivering 110kW of power up to a maximum of 170kW. The most powerful engine used by the X1 xDrive25i provides an impressive combination of both performance and economy. With the car racing from

Extra height to the car and a raised seating position has also given drivers an improved view of proceedings. Inside, the driver-focused cockpit design, which has become a hallmark of the brand’s models, offers plenty of luxurious touches together with a modern contemporary feel. An all-new generation has also brought with it a raft of improved safety features. A new addition to the range is the BMW Head-Up Display which, as in the larger X models, projects driving-related information directly onto the windscreen. The new X1 can also be specified with the marque’s Stop & Go function, Lane Departure Warning system, Traffic Jam Assistant, Collision Warning and

Pedestrian Warning systems. Fans of the original X1 needn’t have worried. Now available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, the second generation X1 is an altogether better car than the one it has replaced on just about every level. Faster, more efficient, roomier and better looking, it has laid down an imposing marker for competitors to follow. Mercedes-Benz GLC

Mid-sized SUV set to steal the show

With Audi and BMW having enjoyed huge success with their mid-sized SUV’s, it has clearly only been a matter of time before Mercedes-Benz muscled in on this lucrative sector. Of course, the German luxury car manufacturer did launch a left hand drive model, the GLK, back in 2008 but with its rivals catering for all markets, the car was never fully competing on a level playing field. Enter the Mercedes-Benz GLC; the long-awaited trump card. Using the same MRA (Modular Rear Architecture) platform as the hugely successful C-Class, it also takes much of its design influences from its sedan sibling. In fact, around 70 per cent of the components found on the C-Class are used on the GLC. So with the car based on one of Mercedes-Benz’s most successful ever launches, whilst adding a liberal dose of versatility and practicality, it’s no wonder the GLC has got tongues wagging. Gone are the days of dull looking SUV’s as the GLC’s visual appeal takes design in this sector to a whole new level. Sporting coupé-style looks, the car’s extra-long wheel base (the longest in its class) allows for a lower stance and a class-leading drag coefficient for good measure. The effortless style also flows through into the cabin, again borrowing much of the interior and dashboard design from the C-Class. Drivers and passengers alike will appreciate the luxurious, adjustable front seats, extra head and legroom in the rear, large boot space and easy access through its wide chunky doors. Currently, there’s a choice of 3 engine options for prospective GLC buyers each fitted with the new 9G-tronic 9-speed auto gearbox and all-wheel drive system. The All images overseas models

GLC220d entry model features Mercedes Benz’s highly refined 2.1 litre twin-turbo diesel engine and delivers 125kW of power and 400Nm of torque. Accelerating from 0-100km/h in just over 8 seconds, it also claims an impressive combined cycle fuel economy of 5 litres per 100kms. For diesel fans after a touch more power, the GLC250d will be the preferred option. Speeding from 0-100km/h in just 7.6 seconds, this more aggressive vehicle delivers an impressive 500Nm of torque. Finally, completing the line-up down under is the GLC250 petrol. Using the same 2.0 litre turbo engine as the A-Class and C-Class, acceleration from 0-100km/h is even quicker at 7.3 seconds while fuel consumption remains remarkably low at 6.5 litres per 100kms. With a list of standard features as long as your arm, there are plenty of toys to keep even the most fastidious of buyers happy. The entry level 220d features 19-inch alloys, keyless start, satellite navigation, electric front seats, a 360-degree view camera and side-steps

whereas all versions come with 9 airbags and blind spot monitoring. The 250 petrol also gets 20-inch alloys, leather seats, tinted glass and the excellent Driver Assistance Package Plus pack featuring adaptive cruise control and steering assist.

“the GLC’s visual appeal takes design in this sector to a whole new level” A game-changing SUV, the GLC might be a late entry into the mid-sized SUV market but it has certainly been worth the wait. Offering the complete package of looks, comfort, safety and performance, it will be a hard act to beat. throttle and pull right through the rev range. Handling through corners on the car was also top notch with the new ‘performance damper’ introduced into the front suspension set-up helping to refine the overall ride. Along with its significantly improved performance comes more good news. It’s also an engine that is considerably more efficient. With the outgoing IS250 achieving a combined cycle fuel economy rating of 9.5 litres per 100km, the new IS200t achieves a bowser-beating 7.5 litres per 100km, thanks in part to its new stop-start technology that kills the engine when stationary. Available in 3 trims; Luxury, F Sport and Sports Luxury, we drove the F Sport and found the cabin awash with luxurious touches. Aside from the body-hugging plush leathertrimmed seats and opulent leather steering wheel, the centrally located 7-inch colour multimedia screen with its mouse-like pad allowed easy access to both audio and climate control settings and the car’s navigation system. Plus, perfect for the vagaries of the Perth weather, we also liked the heated and ventilated front seats offered as standard. Standard safety features now include adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, automatic wipers, a power adjustable steering column and a pre-collision warning system. A lane departure warning system and blind spot monitoring are optional. With its sleek lines and imposing presence, improved performance and efficiency together with its numerous luxurious touches, the IS200t hits the mark on every level. Driving this luxurious sedan proved to be a real treat. For further information on the Lexus IS200t, contact Lexus of Perth on 9340 9000 or visit the showroom at 359 Scarborough Beach Road, Osborne Park. Price - from $65915 drive away.

Exhilarating sports sedan ticks the boxes

Successfully taking on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3-Series and Audi A4, not to mention a few others, in one of the motoring industry’s most competitive market sectors is certainly not for the faint hearted. The IS sports sedan from Lexus, however, has always had a strong following Down Under. Voted Best Luxury Car by numerous Australian motoring critics on its release in 1999, the model has built up a loyal and growing customer base through careful evolution. Despite plenty of past acclaim, however, we think that the new IS200t could well be a bit of a game changer. With fresh releases from many of its major competitors, it is without doubt a timely launch. And, having taken this agile sedan out for a bit of a spin, we found there was an awful lot to like about it. Let’s start with the engine. Gone is the old 2.5 litre V6 engine from the outgoing IS250 and in comes the new 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine for the IS200t. Already deployed in the NX200t, and with a further roll-out of the engine planned across the Lexus range, this turbo-powered power plant fitted with an eight-speed automatic gearbox adds a completely new dimension to the car. Producing 180kW of power and 350Nm of torque, it offers significantly more power than the old V6, in fact, a highly impressive 27kW and 98Nm more. With acceleration from a standing start to 100km/h in a claimed 7 seconds, we loved the responsive

Downsizing Homeowners will typically move house for a number of reasons. Often it’s to move closer to a place of work, a school catchment area or family and sometimes it’s purely for a change of scenery. However, for the over 50’s, downsizing continues to be the key motive for moving home. According to the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI), 43 per cent of people who have moved home since turning 50 years of age have shifted to a property with fewer bedrooms, with retirement villages and units proving especially popular. And, according to AHURI, the key reasons for the move included no longer being able or willing to maintain a larger property or to simply improve an existing lifestyle. Factors, such as children leaving home and the quest for financial stability, were often the catalyst.

Property experts have been predicting for some time that more and more Australians will show an interest in downsizing to enjoy a more manageable lifestyle. In fact, many have been predicting that current retirees are not only keen to make the move to a smaller property but will do so much sooner than previous generations. With baby boomers in their 60’s having much of their net worth tied up in their houses, many are now selling up with the aim of releasing equity and finding more appropriate accommodation for themselves, thereby fuelling the trend. If you are thinking of downsizing in the future, make sure you seek impartial expert advice before making the move. Give Your Mortgage A Health Check

where some of the loan is fixed and the rest is at a variable rate. Split mortgages are a natural hedge against larger market forces – a bet each way, if you like. And, at a time when Australia faces forces, such as an interest rate decision in the US and volatility on the Chinese stock market, a split loan gives spread of risk. When investigating your mortgage, don’t overlook the obvious; refinancing. If you haven’t done this for a while and your property has increased in value, think about revaluing and refinancing while interest rates are still low. With banks having recently put the brakes on lending to property investors, owneroccupier home loan rates are increasingly becoming more competitive. Banks are using more aggressive tactics to keep existing owner-occupier clients and enticing new ones by offering everything from low rates, waived fees, cash back or even frequent flyer points. This competition is great for the consumer and means that many people will find they have more leverage to negotiate a better deal. Many of the great specials and deals available in the marketplace aren’t being advertised. Seeing a mortgage broker is a great way of navigating the changing landscape and getting up-to-theminute advice on what the best deals are. You can’t change what central banks do with interest rates but you can shop around and find the best loan for you. Mark Bouris is Executive Chairman of wealth management company Yellow Brick Road.

By Mark Bouris

With interest rates stalled, it’s a good time to be running the rule over your mortgage and making sure you can cope with any increase. Official American interest rates have been low for some time to help stimulate its economy, however, if US interest rates are raised, our own Reserve Bank could also increase rates, which in turn would affect our mortgage rates and property markets. The immediate fate of interest rates is not something Australians can influence. But it does create an opportunity for mortgageholders to audit their loans and ensure they have the right facilities in place for a possible change in interest rates. What should you be looking for? Start with the basics; the interest rate itself. If you think rates will rise, your best starting point is at the lowest possible interest rate. If you have a variable rate mortgage that charges 1 per cent less than the rate most Australians are paying, then you already have a buffer. Secondly, look at the loan features. Borrowers who deposit extra cash into their mortgages can accumulate these extra repayments as a buffer against interest rate rises that they may not have factored into their finances. But you can’t accumulate extra repayments in a loan that doesn’t support this strategy. It’s the same with offset mortgage accounts. With offset accounts, all income goes into the account and the balance reduces the remaining mortgage accordingly. You only pay interest on the reduced mortgage balance. This can significantly reduce the mortgage while interest rates are low. But you have to have a lender that offers this type of loan and at an interest rate and fees that make it worthwhile. You could also consider a split mortgage 52

Golf Tips

with Craig Tapp

Hi everyone! I hope you are all holing a few putts. In this issue, I am going to talk about the mental side of golf. Now before you stop reading, thinking that you have heard all this before, I promise not to bore you to death with the same old tired stuff. Like you, I am also a little sceptical about the real value of some practices. Will trying to picture the perfect shot with my eyes closed, without letting my playing partners catch me, really take 5 shots off my handicap? I am not so sure. The mental game I would actually like to talk about involves using the correct thought processes to take pressure off a shot, and to also have realistic expectations on the likely success of the shot. This can lead to many shots coming off the handicap, making your golf a lot more fun. If you want to play better golf, it’s vital to know how far you hit each club. This is important for the obvious reason, i.e. to hit your ball close to the target but it will also take mental pressure off the shot. Try using this simple system. If the pin is at the front of the green, add on another 15 metres. This means if you have 150 metres to the pin, you take a club that won’t go further than 165 metres but will still get as close. If the pin is in the middle of the green add on 10 metres and if the pin is at the back add on 5 metres. So, mentally you now know you have the perfect club selection. If you happen to flush the shot (rare), you will be on the green past the pin. If you hit an average shot (most likely), you will be next to the pin. If you hit a poor shot (likely), you will still be on the front of the green. When I play with the club golfers and hackers, they always tend to guess which club they should use. Therefore, there is always that mental doubt on whether they have the correct club, which in turn puts undue pressure on the shot. If you take on board my simple system, and have the right club, it will make it mentally easier to commit to the shot.

The best ball strikers on the PGA Tour average around 60 per cent of greens in regulation. That means they only hit about 10 or 11 greens out of the 18 holes. In fact, with a 4 iron they will only hit the green about 2 times out of 10. So believe me, it’s OK to hit bad shots. Don’t fear them, expect them. If you stop worrying about the bad shots, you will hit more good shots. Worrying about or fearing the bad shot will get you all wound up, which won’t allow good ones to be hit. For putting, the PGA Tour average made from 8 feet is just 49 per cent. That’s right, they miss more than they hole. Outside 20 feet, the average is just 3 per cent made. Generally, outside 12 feet, golfers have a 1 in 10 chance of holing and we are talking the best players on the planet here. Now, when I ask club golfers how many putts they should get from 8 feet, the usual response is around 7 or 8 out of 10. Recognising the probability of success of a certain shot will take a lot of pressure off and, again, will allow for the hitting of better shots. So go work on your yardages, do a bit of research on the odds of hitting certain shots and don’t forget to keep working hard on your short game to recover from those bad shots we expect to hit. Good luck and good golfing!

VascuLyse

A safe non-invasive treatment for embarrassing skin blemishes within the damaged capillary. The treatment, referred to as Capillary Coalysis, leads to the unsightly capillaries being absorbed and permanently eliminated by the body. Relatively painless, some patients have been known to experience a slight pricking sensation, sessions are between five and fifteen minutes in length and most conditions are eectively treated in one to three sessions. Skin reaction after treatments is minimal and any reaction completely disappears after a few days, leaving truly amazing results. VascuLyse is now available in Mandurah at Total Skin and Body Centre Day Spa. For further information, call 9535 4530 or visit them at Unit 2/2A, Peel Street (next to the Atrium Hotel).

Clusters of tiny dilated blood vessels that are visible through the skin, broken capillaries are the most common type of skin blemish. More prevalent as we grow older due to our skin losing its elasticity, broken capillaries are also formed by excessive sun exposure, through drinking alcohol, by eating hot and spicy foods and smoking. VascuLyse is the very latest non-invasive technology designed to treat skin blemishes. In addition to permanently removing broken capillaries, it also treats ruby points on the body, skin tags on the face, neck and body, blotches on the face and upper chest, milia on the face and cholesterol deposits around the eyes. Through the use of a disposable sterile stylus that gently touches the skin, the VascuLyse uses a mild current to induce coagulation 56

Beach Dangers

How to keep your dog safe

Spending time with your dog at the beach over summer can be highly rewarding and a great deal of fun for all. However, there are a number of hidden dangers that dog owners should be aware of when heading to a pooch’s favourite sandy spot. If the dog is prone to scavenging, always be on the watch for puffer fish that commonly wash up on our shores. Extremely poisonous, getting into contact with one of these nasties can cause an ascending paralysis within the dog. The animal will first become unsteady on its feet, next start to vomit before finally collapsing, unable to breathe. Emergency veterinary treatment is always required in these cases. These symptoms are similar to the reaction experienced from a snake bite and, with snakes often seen on the beach during the warmer parts of the day, it’s also important to be on the lookout for these venomous reptiles too. Remember to also keep a watchful eye on your dog in the water as occasionally they can run into trouble with near drownings and poisonous creatures, such as stingrays. Stingrays can shoot a poisonous barb into the pet if accidently trodden on, which causes a very painful and nasty wound that will often require treatment or surgery. Taking dogs to the beach during the cooler part of the day will also help avoid the dangers of heatstroke, especially for dogs with short snouts, such as bulldogs and pugs, which may have trouble breathing. Interaction with other dogs is common on the beach so always ensure your dog is well socialised and trained if you let it off the lead. Dog fights are not uncommon at the beach just like any other public park. Likewise, be mindful that in any public area there is also a potential risk of contracting Kennel Cough or Parvovirus; another good reason why it is important to keep your pet’s vaccinations up to date. Finally, don’t forget to keep an eye out for discarded fishing lines and fishing gear as pulling fish hooks out of lips and tongues is no laughing matter. This usually requires sedation or anaesthesia, which, of course, has its own risks. Some of our local beaches are closed to dogs during the summer months so contact your local council to find out which beaches are open to dogs during this time of the year. Diversity South

Local agency continues 21st year celebrations

Providing disability support to almost 40 adults in 9 community-based homes in the Peel region, Diversity South has a come a long way since its inception in 1994. The growth and success of this not-for-profit organisation was recently highlighted at a well-attended AGM where guests not only celebrated another successful year but also the agency’s twenty-first anniversary. Patron David Templeman MLA opened the day with a welcome to country before Paddi Creavey OAM discussed the organisation’s beginnings and how an idea in the kitchen of a local family home grew into a steering committee and, finally, to a fully-fledged board. The meeting was then rounded off with an inspirational speech from guest speaker Glenn Mitchell. The AGM followed on from a diversity day held in October, which coincided with the annual Loud

Shirt Day. Held to recognise and reward the organisation’s staff and to bring everyone involved in the agency together, the day also helped raise funds for deaf children. Loud shirts were very much in evidence during the fun-filled day and prizes were awarded for the best shirts. Food and activities were organised by the management and administration teams. Financial donations to Diversity South are always welcome. Restaurant Review Salt Bistro

Salt Bistro on Mandurah Terrace has recently opened to rave reviews so we thought it was about time The Mandurah Life paid a visit. Located just over the road from the estuary and next door to Murphy’s Irish Pub, the central location of Salt Bistro will certainly guarantee plenty of foot traffic this summer. With bi-fold doors opening out onto a shady dining area it also offers the choice of eating in comfort inside the stylish interior or alfresco while watching the world go by. Open for breakfast at weekends and lunch and dinner 7 days, a set lunchtime menu is available for those looking to grab a quick bite. However, for those with a bit more time available, the main menu is also available during the day. Arriving for lunch, we decided to order from this. Fresh, locally sourced produce is the order of the day at Salt Bistro and Head Chef Rosa Chour has added a tantalising Asian twist to the fare. We were impressed to find during our visit that absolutely everything on the menu is made from scratch, even the dukkha, which speaks volumes for the attention to detail and preparation that goes into everything on offer. To start with, we chose one of the restaurant’s biggest sellers, Seafood Cocktail. A quick sample of this and it’s clear why this had diners coming back for more. A delicious combination of rock lobster, locally sourced crayfish, Exmouth prawns and smoked salmon, served with a seafood cocktail sauce; this is the perfect summer entrée. Light, full of flavour and beautifully presented, we would wager you would be hard pressed to find a better take on this classic starter.

Onto the mains, and our first choice was the Dhufish with Local Prawns. This exquisite fish dish is an ideal meal for those who don’t like their fish too strong in flavour. Its chunky flakes of delicate south west dhufish combined with the spectacular breadcrumbed prawns served on a bed of Asian slaw were quite sensational. This dish is a must-try. Next, we chose one of the restaurant’s signature dishes, Roasted Lamb Fillet. Served with fondant potatoes, buttered beans, pumpkin purée, jus and dukkha, the succulent lamb combined with the purée and jus was simply superb. The potatoes are definitely worth a mention too. Smooth and buttery, they might not be ideal for the waistline but to be fair who cares when they taste that good?! With a range of sharing plates available, an extensive wine and beer list and a wide choice of cocktails, Salt Bistro offers plenty of reasons to visit this summer. Fabulous food and excellent service; it’s a welcome and irresistible addition to the local eating out scene.

Nino’s Fish Bar and Café

Planning a trip to the Mandurah Ocean Marina this summer? With a growing selection of cafés and boutiques, the marina is also home to a number of waterside restaurants. In this edition of The Mandurah Life, we paid a visit to one of the most popular, Nino’s Fish Bar and Café. Located in Dolphin Quay and with plenty of seating both inside and outside on the decking, Nino’s is perfectly positioned to take in the marina views. It is also one of the most visited eateries in this award-winning development. Hardly surprising when you take a glance at the extensive menu! For fish lovers, there’s a huge choice of dishes and, with daily seafood specials, there is always something new to try. The day we visited, the specials included Red Emperor served with chips and salad, Vietnamese Nam Jin, and a fantastic grilled Baldchin Groper served with a fresh broccoli salad and cashew dressing. The restaurant also serves a number of premium fish dishes, featuring different varieties of snapper, barramundi, dory, trevally and Tasmanian salmon, and there are plenty of classic mains to try, including Chilli Mussels and the popular Seafood Platters. Nino’s also serves up a selection of family packs, perfect to eat in or takeaway. The largest of these, the Deluxe Pack, includes a delicious selection of prawns, scallops, white fish, squid rings, chicken nuggets, dim sims, pineapple fritters, chips and salad. Diners can also tuck into a selection of burgers. Try the Fish Burger, the Steak Burger or the

Nino’s Burger; a tasty beef patty served with egg, bacon, tomato, lettuce, onion relish and aioli sauce. Or, why not try one of Nino’s fabulous daily salad specials? New on the menu this summer is a Thai Prawn Salad and a Chicken Salad served with feta and sundried tomato. Vegetarians can tuck into a range of dishes, including Vegetable Spring Rolls and the recently introduced Crumbed Macaroni and Cheese Triangles. Kids have their own separate menu. We tried the restaurant’s classic Fish and Chips and thoroughly enjoyed the beautifully cooked hake. All dishes at Nino’s are cooked in rice bran oil for a healthy touch and the lightness of the batter was a real standout. Catering for a wide range of dietary requirements, chips are also served up gluten-free with all dishes and other glutenfree dishes are available on request. Our Favourite Dish

Our delicious Pelican Burger has been part of the menu at Pelicans on the Murray Café for as long as most people can remember. We took over the By Debbie and Shara Major, business two years ago and during that Pelicans on the Murray Café time it has continued to be the most requested burger we do. The key to its success is the beef patty. Our patties are sourced from one of the highest quality suppliers around, New Zealand-based Angel Bay. Made from 100 per cent pure New Zealand beef, the taste is simply amazing. To create the Pelican Burger we combine the beef patty with a fried egg, bacon, pineapple, cheese, beetroot, carrot, cucumber, tomato and lettuce to create a taste sensation. Served in a bun with chunky chips, it’s a winning combination that has customers continuously coming back for it time and time again. Large orders are common place and many of our customers often phone in an order (one regular actually orders 15 at a time!) when friends and family are round watching the footy. Available 7 days a week from 11.00am, enjoy the Pelican Burger for $18.50 when dining in or for $15.50 takeaway. Pelicans on the Murray Café is open Thursday to Saturday from 7.00am to 2.00pm and Sunday to Wednesday from 7.00am to 6.00pm. Located at Unit 27, 1 Banksia Street, South Yunderup, orders can be phoned ahead on 9537 7680.

Who’s New?

Gezellig Restaurant

An exciting addition to the Mandurah eating out scene has recently opened its doors on Mandurah Terrace. Gezellig Restaurant (pronounced keh-zell-ick) aims to showcase the very best fresh local produce and, with an experienced team of chefs on board, expect plenty of creativity in the kitchen and plenty of tasty choices on the menu. The essence of this new eatery comes directly from its name. One of the hardest words to translate from Dutch into English, gezellig, or the trait of gezelligheid, means a feeling of well-being, a feeling typically shared with others. This can be a positive atmosphere, flow or vibe that colours an individual’s personal experience in a favourable way. A person, place or party can all be gezellig. At Gezellig, this feeling of sharing positive experiences with others will be reinforced by serving a range of delicious sharing plates, stunning wines and exotic cocktails to match the lunch and dinner menus. Discover a range of unique dishes, including fabulous beer steamed Mandurah crabs. Sourcing local and Australian produce, Gezellig looks forward to working with some of the fantastic growers and farmers from the Peel region. Plus, don’t

miss out on trying its delicious coffee and range of homemade cakes. Gezellig is now open for breakfast from 7am to 11.30am and lunch from 12pm to 3pm. The restaurant will also be open for dinner from late January once its liquor licence has been granted. A range of gourmet picnic hampers will also be available to purchase and boat owners in Mandurah will be able to moor up at the jetty opposite the restaurant and collect hampers to enjoy on the water. Open 7 days, Gezellig Restaurant is located at 3/16 Mandurah Terrace. Don’t miss the next edition of The Mandurah life when we pay the restaurant a visit!

friends, and making the most of the outdoors in the region’s beautiful temperate climate. You can literally feel yourself slowing down to the region’s pace of life as you read about how eating can be made so pleasurable with your favourite people. Before getting stuck into the recipes, there are sections that introduce the reader to not only a typical Mediterranean diet but also to a typical Mediterranean way of life. There are also tips on how to substitute everyday foods for healthier and more delicious Mediterranean alternatives. There is even a sample 14-day menu to help the reader get started and a run-down on the common ingredients and flavours enjoyed in Southern Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East. Every dish falls into specific chapters, such as Breakfast, Pizza and Pasta, Seafood, and Dessert, with reference to whether it originates from Greece, Southern Italy, Spain, Croatia, Cyprus and Morocco, amongst others. Standout must-tries include Eggs Poached in Moroccan Tomato Sauce, which surprises with the inclusion of spicy ras el hanout; Saffron Chicken Stew with chickpeas and smoky chorizo; and Ricotta with Balsamic Cherries and Black Pepper - a beautifully silky mousse topped with sweet yet tart marinated cherries. With its fabulously indulgent recipes and guides to living well, this cookery book will surely transform weekday as well as weekend eating. If you are looking for a new way to enjoy food and life, The Mediterranean Table could well provide the answer.

The Mediterranean Table It’s healthy, nutritious, colourful and delicious, so it’s no wonder that the cuisine of the Mediterranean is being celebrated in this new cookery book from Exisle Publishing. The Mediterranean Table doesn’t focus on counting calories or restricting certain foods like many other similar recipe books based on specific diets, instead it is all about savouring a little of everything. Over 150 recipes encapsulate the easy-going attitude of life in the Mediterranean where the emphasis is on relaxing and enjoying food with family and

Parm and Beach Barbecue Lobster Tails. Then there are the rubs, sauces and marinades; “Sweet Home Alabama” Barbecue Sauce, Coffee-Chili Dry Rub and Mojo Marinade. Finally, to finish off this comprehensive step-by-step guide to smoking, there is a chapter aptly named, Amazing BBQ Sides. South American slow-cooking with smoke is a very different approach to the usual Australian tradition of barbecuing, and it’s perfect for entertaining as all the work is done before the guests arrive. Next time you’re thinking of firing up the barbecue, delve into Real BBQ and try cooking like the locals in South America. Real BBQ, The Ultimate Step-By-Step Smoker Cookbook is available now in all good bookstores.

Real BBQ

The Ultimate Step-By-Step Smoker Cookbook

It goes without saying that Aussies know a thing or two about barbecuing. However, the art of barbecuing has its origins in many different places around the world, which has led to many unique styles and distinctive flavours. And it’s the barbecue regions of South America that are celebrated in Real BBQ, The Ultimate Step-By-Step Smoker Cookbook. Recipes that showcase typical barbecuing methods from Texas, Memphis, the Carolinas and Kansas City are interspersed with tips from renowned pitmasters (those that have mastered the art of cooking meat and fish slowly and steadily with smoke). Find out what they think about marinades versus rubs, their tips for tenderising meat as well as tips for maximising flavour. Barbecuing in that part of the world is all about the preparation before sitting back and enjoying the aromas while the smoker does its job. Before getting stuck into recipes, there are two chapters that cover the basics of smoking and how to get started. Types of smokers, fuel, tools and equipment are given the low-down, including different types of hardwood and which red meat, poultry or fish they best suit. Flicking through the pages, the names of dishes get you itching to start up the smoker; Kicked-Up Chicken Tortilla Soup, Beer Can Chicken, “Whole Lotta Love” Pork Shoulder, Knockout Meatball 70

Summer Recipe Lamb Burgers with Smoky Potato Salad How about cooking up something a bit different on the BBQ this summer? Well, try these delicious lamb burgers served with a dish of wonderfully smoky and zingy baby potatoes. Serves 4 Burger ingredients 500g lean lamb mince 150g panko breadcrumbs 1 carrot, grated 4 spring onions, finely chopped 1 bunch fresh mint, finely chopped ½ tsp sea salt ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper

Salad ingredients 500g baby potatoes, washed and halved 1 red onion, thinly sliced juice 1 lime 1 tbsp olive oil 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 – 2 tsp smoked paprika 2 tbsp chopped coriander

Method Boil the potatoes in a large saucepan for 12 to 15 minutes until tender. Drain well and set aside. Combine all the burger ingredients together in a large bowl. With wet hands, shape the mixture into 4 burgers. Be careful not to compact the mixture too much or the burgers will be tough. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes then grill on the barbecue for around 6 minutes each side until the burgers are cooked through. Meanwhile, combine the rest of the salad ingredients in a large bowl. Tip the potatoes into the bowl and gently mix well. Enjoy with your choice of salad leaves and plain yoghurt on the side. Summer Recipe Quinoa Summer Salad If you have yet to discover the delights of quinoa, then this Mexican-influenced recipe is the perfect place to start. The delicately nutty seeds are so simple to prepare – it’s similar to cooking rice – and then, it’s just a matter of combining all the ingredients. Makes 4 large servings or 6 smaller servings as a side dish Salad ingredients 150g quinoa (white, red or black) 1 green capsicum, chopped 1 red capsicum, chopped 2 avocados, chopped 3 large tomatoes, chopped 400g can kidney beans, rinsed and drained 4 spring onions, sliced Dressing ingredients 1 tablespoon olive oil juice of 1 lime 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 1 tsp ground cumin 1 green chilli, seeds removed and finely chopped 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves salt and pepper Method Rinse quinoa thoroughly in running water in a fine strainer or cheesecloth. Drain. Place quinoa in a saucepan and add 300ml water. Cover and bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the quinoa starts to look transparent and has released little white sprouts. You may need to lift the lid a little to prevent boiling over. Chill the quinoa until cool. In a large bowl, mix together all the dressing ingredients. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add all the salad ingredients and mix well.

Keep Your Cool This Summer

Watermelon Mojito

It’s set to be a hot one this summer so set aside some quality time to cool down and relax. Mix up a refreshing mocktail, sit back and take it easy, and for the evenings, how about changing up your mocktail to a cocktail?! All recipes make one drink.

The ginger ale can be substituted for white rum for an alcoholic version. Ingredients 1 cup chopped watermelon juice of 1 lime caster sugar mint leaves ice cubes ginger ale (or lemon/lime soda) soda water Method Place watermelon, lime juice and 1 teaspoon sugar into a blender and blend until smooth. With the end of a wooden spoon, muddle 2 mint leaves with ½ teaspoon sugar in a glass. Add watermelon mixture to fill half the glass. Add a few cubes of ice, dash of ginger ale and fill up with soda water. Stir. Garnish with a slice of watermelon.

Peach Bellini Invented over 80 years ago in Venice, this truly is a classic summer cocktail. Ingredients 1 ripe peach, peeled, halved, stone removed and roughly chopped chilled Champagne, Prosecco or other sparkling wine Method Place chopped peaches into a blender and blend until smooth. Spoon some of the mixture into a chilled champagne glass until almost a third full. Slowly top up with your choice of sparkling wine, stirring as you pour.

Raspberry Daiquiri A fresh non-alcoholic take on the famous cocktail. Ingredients ½ cup frozen raspberries (or your own choice of frozen berries) 1 cup ice 1 small bottle soda water dash grenadine syrup Method Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. 82
