The latest fashion trends from The Mandurah Life’s resident fashion expert.

Vibrant colours, light silky fabrics and lots of movement – be inspired by this season’s most daring and freshest fashion trends. Yellow is the colour of the moment whether canary bright, buttery pale or marigold rich. It symbolises warmth, energy and happiness and, therefore, is the perfect choice as the colour of the season. Deliciously sugary pastels, good enough to eat, will trend in fashion too, such as candy pink, mint green, lemon chiffon, pale coral, taupe and soft hydrangea blue. These ice-cream, candy shades create a romantic and understated look – perfect for carefree sunny days. In contrast, expect to also see pops of rainbow brights, metallic and iridescent colours as well as, of course, white - quintessential for any fashion season. An element of movement is a must for many of the pieces this season - it helps to bring an outfit to life. Clever modern tailoring has been employed to bring delicate pleats, ruffles, folds and tucks to tops, skirts and dresses to create fluidity and amazingly billowy silhouettes. If you haven’t already done so, invest in this season’s major on-trend piece - a micropleated skirt. Most of the hemlines for dresses and skirts will be mid to long, allowing the fabric plenty of freedom to flow so go for the length that best suits your frame.

As usual, with glorious days and warm evenings, there are options to bare a bit of skin and, this season, it is the turn of the shoulder. There are plenty of off-the-shoulder or strapless pieces to choose from, pieces that feature cut-outs or have open backs – look out for gorgeously dramatic, draped, open backs on dresses. There are also skinny bandeau tops that show off a section of skin and they balance beautifully with loose and

voluminous shirts, jackets and pants. Boudoir-esque silk slips, which started to re-emerge back in winter, are now well into their comeback from the 1990’s when fashion icons, such as Kate Moss and Sarah Jessica Parker, wore them with a playful effortless vibe. They are a timeless fashion classic and are to be found in pastels, bright colours or metallic. Team a slip dress with a thin tee underneath or with a bomber jacket thrown over the shoulders for evenings. Seek out a light bomber in a wonderfully tactile fabric, such as silk, chiffon or satin.

MOVING HD e sOi g nMt i pEs f?o r a s e a m l e s s s a l e T he spring and summer season is a key time for selling property and preparation is everything. So if you’re planning to up-sticks, a clear plan of action is essential to maximise the sale value of your home. Before the property is listed and the home is opened up to all and sundry, focus on getting the presentation 18 HOME & GARDEN

of the property up to scratch. Unfinished work around the home can be a make or break scenario for a sale and getting those jobs done now can make all the difference. Start by drawing up a list of the jobs that need doing in order of importance. It may seem overwhelming but by focusing on one job at a time, the home will be show-

ready and saleable sooner than you think. Start with any repairs that have been put off. Now is the time to get stuck in and get them finished. Typically, it can be the small things that need fixing. Chipped paintwork, damaged walls, leaky taps; buyers will certainly notice if you don't complete the work. No need to make wholesale changes to cabinetry in kitchens and bathrooms. Instead, focus on fixtures and hardware, such as taps, handles, mirrors, shower heads and towel rails. By simply replacing old for new, the room will feel refreshed and updated without breaking the bank. Remember, when potential buyers walk into a property, they like to instantly feel at home and that they can move straight in. They like to picture themselves living the lifestyle that the house offers so getting rid of clutter and mess is key. The earlier this process is started the better and be brutal. Throw out anything that hasn’t been used or worn for over a year and use temporary storage for both bigger items that clutter or contradict the function of a room and for clothes that are out of season. 20 HOME & GARDEN

Next, organise storage so that cupboards and wardrobes look ordered with plenty of space. Consider arranging clothes by colour or type in wardrobes and cupboards – buyers do like to snoop. Clean everywhere, including windows, blinds and shutters, and dry-clean curtains too. When it comes to staging the home, keep in mind the likely type of buyer and tailor the styling accordingly. Remove items that are overly personal, including large family photos and trinkets. Create a homely feel with updated bedlinen, cushions and rugs, and add flowers, mirrors and lamps so that spaces feel brighter and welcoming. Finally, don’t forget the outside areas. Make the entrance appealing by painting or staining the front door and by adding planters. Consider creating a new sitting area with a café-style table and chairs. And, if the garage is a dumping ground for toys and outdoor equipment, install storage so that the space is maximised.

ith open plan living now at the heart of new home designs, a recent survey by houzz.com.au has backed up the increasing influence of the kitchen in home design. The survey carried out in early 2016 revealed the emergence of the super kitchen and that 49% of homeowners now use their kitchen space for entertaining, 43% for socialising and even 25% as a homework space. This emerging trend has seen the kitchen become the focus of the home, blurring the lines between traditional living spaces. Families now require the room to act as a hub for every aspect of family life from cooking to socialising, and from working to watching TV. With the spring/summer selling season now in full swing, designing a contemporary kitchen/living area can be a key way of making that important first impression with buyers and maximising the sale value of the home. Here are some tips for designing that super kitchen:• Allow time to plan your new kitchen and consider any building alterations that might be required together with the design, materials and finish. Both the flooring and décor may need to be changed to achieve your look. • Consider the available space. Plan your kitchen to

22 HOME & GARDEN

maximize storage space that is easily accessed, consider the space available for drawers and pull-out units, and ensure there are sufficient seating areas. If you are purchasing a new oven, don’t forget to consider the design and width of the unit. • Research materials, colours and finishes. Stone benchtops have become increasingly affordable in recent years and have become a common requirement of the modern kitchen. Low quality finishes to benchtops can seriously impact on the resale value of the home. Similarly, doors come in a range of different styles and colours. Choose from melamine, vinyl or 2 pack painted units with or without handles. • The finishing touches. Achieve a quality feel with soft-closing doors and drawers and consider creating an ambient mood with LED lighting and/or strips of lights around shelving and kick boards. Colour accents can be introduced by using funky appliances, such Smeg fridges and Delongi kettles and toasters. Canisters and fruit bowls can make stylish colourful additions. t’s more than just a room to sleep in. These days, the bedroom is a haven for escaping the chaotic nature of everyday life. So rather than letting it become the forgotten room in the house, why not transform it with luxurious touches to create an opulent boudoir? It’s the bedroom trend of the moment. Imagine entering the bedroom and being greeted with rich colours and glints of shiny bling – it will feel like you are being treated to a stay at a high-end boutique hotel. It will instantly lift your spirits. Imagine waking up to beautiful décor and wonderfully soft textures all around you – what a great start to the day! Surrounding ourselves with nice things makes us feel good – as simple as that. Have a go at putting these opulent bedroom tips into practice and you’ll find you relax better, sleep better and wake up feeling very special.

Walls

Avoid mid-tones and go for striking walls in a rich brown, bluey-grey, deep navy or bright white and even consider making one wall a feature in deep charcoal. Hang wallpaper with a geometric pattern to accentuate a mirror, doorway or behind a dressing table. Arrange large pieces of framed artwork that make visual statements – black and white pictures are ideal.

Furniture

Look out for an armchair, chaise longue or ottoman

24 HOME & GARDEN

that has contemporary forms and clean lines. The opulent look is not about having fussy details; it is elegant and sleek. Velvet and suede are perfect fabrics to include as they are sumptuous and refined. For chests of drawers, dressing and bedside tables, choose bright white, black or rich dark woods.

The bed

Dress your bed with charcoal, white or black. Use linen and cushions with metallic embroidered detailing and foil printing, as well as geometric prints. If the room is primarily white, then prints and designs with bright colours, such as emerald green and deep pink, work perfectly for throws or cushions.

S tat e m e n t p i e c e s

To avoid a garish and over-the-top look, stick to just one or two large statement pieces in any one space of the room. For example, place a decadent lamp on an interesting bedside table or lay a beautiful rug underneath a lavish chaise longue.

D e c o r at i v e p i e c e s

Add irreverent chunks of glamour with glass, marble, white gloss and gold decorative pieces, such as vases and candle holders. These materials add to the twist of decadence in the room without feeling gaudy.

Keep Your Home Safe …w i t h h i g h d e f i n i t i o n C C T V By Mitch King

t’s no secret that today’s local police forces have their work cut out trying to protect our homes and property. Resources and man power are often thin on the ground and our court system struggles to cope. This is why CCTV is now so essential in the fight against crime. As needs have grown and technology has improved, CCTV systems have become more and more popular. Alarm systems were once seen as the first line of defence for a home or business and, initially, these were effective in acting as a deterrent, helping to ward off would-be intruders. These days, however, this no longer the case and most intruders have no fear of a common house alarm or even a patrolling security guard. For today’s security conscious homeowner, CCTV is now the security system of choice. The ability to see who is around the home from a safe position inside or remotely whilst away from the property adds that extra layer of reassurance. Plus, this high quality visual 26 HOME & GARDEN

evidence is just what our local constabulary needs to make sure their efforts don’t go unrewarded. Without solid evidence our courts have little to convict on. With CCTV systems starting at a digital resolution of 3 megapixels, recorded images are now at an almost unquestionable quality for the court system. Our residential-quality 3mp camera systems start from as little as $2499 fully fitted and provide an extremely effective and affordable home security package. Give the police what they need to get would-be criminals off the streets and help keep local homes and businesses safe. For further information on installing a CCTV system, talk to Mitch King at Mandurah’s tried and trusted security solutions provider, Mediatek, at The Home Hub Mandurah. F

eaturing a number of show firsts, the 2016 Club Marine Mandurah Boat Show is once again poised to be a major event in the WA boating calendar. Held at the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club in the Mandurah Ocean Marina, it’s a weekend not to be missed for both boating and fishing enthusiasts alike. For the first time in the show’s history, the event will launch a new on-water brokerage section. This new area, which is expected to feature up to a dozen boats, will give boat buyers the opportunity to view and buy quality pre-owned boats at competitive prices. A full list of boats available will be listed on the show’s website prior to the opening of the event. Buyers in the market for a boat will also be able to take advantage of the ‘try before you buy’ boat demos, which will give buyers the opportunity to go out on the water to help with purchasing decisions. Both initiatives are part of the show’s attempt to make buying a boat easier during the event. 28 SPORT & RECREATION

The show will be showcasing a number of new product releases, including the Hobie Mirage Eclipse, the world’s first leg-powered stand up board, the new Fleming 55 Pilothouse motor yacht, the Pulse 600 trimaran from Corsair Marine and the WA release of the Arvor 855 Weekender, Arvor 700 Weekender and Arvor 675 Sportsfish. Show ambassador Paul Worsteling, one of Australia’s most recognisable faces in recreational fishing, is also back along with other show favourites, including the Yamaha Kid’s Casting Competition and the Engel Aquatank Fishing Stage, featuring regular

presentations, talks and demos across the weekend. Enjoy sessions with Scott Coghlan from Western Angler Magazine, Mike Roennfeld from The West Australian, Jadon Wilder, fish filleting demos with Peter Anderton, and talks from the Western Angler Next Gen Fishing Team. Finally, other show firsts include a special ‘learn how to build a boat’ feature and, in conjunction with Yachting WA trainers, visitors will be able to sit for their Recreational Skipper’s Ticket on site. See you there!

GOLF TIPS W I T H C R A I G TA P P

H

i everyone! I hope you are all holing a few putts and enjoying your golf. Hanging out at the driving range every day can be a lot of fun and, at times, extremely comical. The different types of swings and attacks at the ball would put a smile on the face of even the most solemn of individuals. While some golfers work on tips given to them by a well-meaning mate, others will refer to online resources for a bit of self-help. Many of the golfers I see have got alignment sticks, video cameras on tripods, iPads running specific golf apps, gadgets that attach to the

shaft of their clubs, impact bags and a whole array of other teaching aids. Despite all of this help, most of the guys on the range still look like they are swinging the club with a bad bout of gout in the knee and a severe case of the gastro. Most of the people I see are working on their backswings or their take away. Have a close look at the photo here of Dustin Johnson, Jim Furyk and Shane Lowery. Do they look like they are worried about their backswings? Always remember, you hit the ball with your downswing. Understanding that the club face has all the influence on where the ball starts and that its path determines the curve on the ball is all you need to know about hitting the ball accurately to a target. What these three pro players do well is have a very good understanding of the club face and path relationship. Most golfers slice the ball so, if you would like to straighten up your flight, forget about your backswing and simply try to swing the club from in to out on the way down (out to the right for right handers ) and this will see your ball starting on line and holding that line for longer. If you start coming too far from in to out, you might even hit a little draw and wouldn’t that be nice. Good luck and good golfing!

TIME TO GET YOUR

S K AT E S O N ! BY SUSAN BROOKS

I

write this article having returned from the 2016 State Championships in Perth, and what a weekend it was! I am delighted to announce that of the 20 competitors from Bunbury who took part, all 20 have been selected to represent the WA state team in the national championships in Victoria being held during the first week of July. This is a fantastic result for all concerned and gives our centre and all who work and train here a tremendous boost. The sport of artistic roller skating continues to grow and its benefits are well known; a fact that was highlighted again to me by the parent of a regular skater. She wrote that one of her friends had asked why she was paying so much money to send her kids skating. Her reply to her friend was that she wasn’t actually paying for the sport she was paying for her kids to learn how to be disciplined, to take care of their bodies, to work with others and to be good team mates, to make

and accomplish goals, to deal with disappointment by working harder to achieve the grade, to make life-long friendships, to be active and not sit around in front of a screen all day long, and to appreciate that to make it in your chosen sport, you have to put in hours and hours of practice, i.e., success doesn’t happen overnight. In other words, she wasn’t paying for a sport; she was paying for the opportunities skating provides and developing attributes that will serve her kids well throughout their lives. She ended by saying that so far she thought it had been a great investment! So, if there are any kids (or parents) out there who would like to try a new sport, make new friends and improve levels of fitness, perhaps the time has literally come to get your skates on. Throughout this year, The Rink is offering a range of special skate and lesson packages for new skaters. At The Rink, our Learn to Skate and Artistic Skating classes are taught by elite state and national level competitive skaters and accredited coaches on a voluntary growth promotion for the sport. Our beginner classes and private lessons cater for all levels and ages, and local competitions and visiting guest coaches cater for both elite level competitors as well as beginners. I look forward to welcoming you to The Rink.

JOHN TONKIN COLLEGE Beyond the textbook

W

hat makes a great school? The answer to this question is complex although the academic results of a school over a period of time may well provide part of the answer. However, what makes a great school is determined by more than just its academic achievements. It’s also about the type of experiences it provides to help a student to grow, to contribute to the community, to be responsible, to have a sense of self-worth, to have fun, to build relationships and to experience the world. John Tonkin College is an Independent Public School working in partnership with parents and the community. Its aim is to turn out great human beings, who will, in turn, give back to the community. Mandurah needs young people who take pride in who they are and where they are from, and this is what drives staff at the college to provide experiences for students that will challenge and inspire. The ability to be creative and think outside the box is something that successful people all have in common. Whilst creativity is a thinking skill deployed in all academic areas, it is most obvious in the arts area at John Tonkin College. Students at JTC are eager to give up their time to collaborate, create, explore and perform in all manner of activities and events both in and outside the school…and parents have joined in too! Whether it be in the performing or visual arts, students enjoy their creativity and also enjoy showing it to the community. Over the years, students have won many 36 EDUCATION & TRAINING

accolades in competitions and through participation in events throughout the state. The humanities area creates a sense of place beyond school and connects students to the world as global citizens. Students have participated in a variety of activities, including attending Camp Gallipoli, under the stars, to commemorate ANZAC Day, hosting Japanese exchange students and experiencing overseas trips to countries, including Japan and Cambodia. The Cambodia trip was focussed on making a difference in a country that doesn’t have the advantages available to students in Australia. Western Australia has a great outdoors and sporting culture and this is embraced at John Tonkin College. Students go on camps to Shark Bay, Kalbarri and Margaret River as well as to local areas and have even had the chance to go on a ski trip to Victoria. Embracing the local Mandurah waterways, the school offers students the opportunity to gain their Skipper’s Ticket, Open Water Scuba Ticket and to learn how to sail. A big event each year is Country Week where regional schools send sporting teams to Perth to compete and JTC students are renowned for showcasing their sportsmanship. Staff and parents of John Tonkin College believe its students have the world at their feet and are growing into valued citizens of the Mandurah community. Building Your Dream HomE Project homes vs custom-designed homes By Matt Hindley, Instill Design

S

o you’ve worked hard, saved your pennies and purchased your dream block. Perhaps it’s a block overlooking the stunning Indian Ocean, the picturesque Mandurah canals or in that rural location that you have always talked about. Wherever it is, there’s a good chance that you have been doing the rounds of the display home villages and perhaps, like many people currently wanting to build, you have been unable to find a home that suits your family’s needs. The reason for this is that project homes are

38 PROPERTY & FINANCE

not designed for any one family. Instead, they are predominantly designed by the builder for the builder as a cost-effective way of building on a large volume scale. This is, of course, supposed to offer cost-savings to the home owner. As a building designer, I see many of the homes getting built today making a series of common mistakes. A key mistake is there often appears to be no consideration for solar passive principles. Often a house design could have simply been flipped around

to provide natural light and cost savings to the home owner. There is also a myth that getting a home custom designed by a building designer will cost more. In fact, the opposite is often the case as we can work to any budget, taking into account the specific needs of the family and the building environment. We also offer a higher level of quality and more flexibility. We believe home design to be a close collaboration between the building designer and the home owner, and we aim to bring unbridled passion to the project and the required care no matter how big or small the build. This, in turn, ensures the home becomes a great investment for the future. Engaging a building designer can not only ensure your dream home is brought to life but it can also result in saving you thousands of dollars by tendering it out to specific custom builders suited to the project. A much better outcome than being locked in with one builder who will charge you for every variation made to the design. Instill Design and Drafting believes in designing custom homes for the home owner not the builder. Help bring your vision to life, enjoy a positive experience throughout the process and save money along the way through the tendering process. How Much Does it Cost? The simple question with no simple answer By Murray Blakers

H

ow much does it cost? It may seem like a simple question but it’s a well-known fact that although we always want to know the cost of something, price is very often not the sole reason behind most purchasing decisions. In fact, there can be plenty of other reasons why we buy a particular product or service. These can include loyalty to a product or service, because of a good past experience, through a recommendation, because of its reputation or prestigious standing in the market or simply out of habit. I have a good example of this. I have dealt with a well-known car business in Mandurah for many years, Mandurah Mitsubishi. They have always been great to deal with but there’s no doubt I might have saved a few dollars along the way if I had taken my trusted Triton elsewhere for its annual service. I don’t really notice much of a difference, however, and, even though the car is outside the warranty period, I believe the dealer knows the vehicle better. Therefore, I have always stuck to the scheduled service and had it done by this particular dealer. As I write, my car is at Mandurah Mitsubishi for its annual service and a nice new loan car is parked outside my office. I have just received a phone call. It’s bad news! The car has a major engine fault that could cost thousands of dollars to fix. Remember, the car is outside its warranty period. However, amazingly, I am still smiling. I have been told that the fault will be fully repaired and the cost covered by Mitsubishi. The dealership has explained that because I have always had the car serviced with them, because they know the car, because they know

40 PROPERTY & FINANCE

the problem and because it is likely to be a fault that has occurred through no fault of my own, Mitsubishi Australia will cover the cost. I have enjoyed the benefits of dealing with a quality dealer, whose levels of customer service are exemplary. It has been well worth paying that extra bit for their service. As a customer, I often ask how much and I expect a simple answer. Yet in business when I’m asked that question, I often stumble before answering. It’s not that I think we are an expensive firm of accountants and it’s certainly not because I don’t know the answer. It’s because I want to explain so much more; what we do; what we stand for; how we solve problems and what is the real value of dealing with us. There are lots of clichés that come to mind, such as, “You get what you pay for” and “Inexpensive doesn’t mean cheap” but they lose their meaning after a while. Like most businesses, we survive on our reputation and most of our work is generated through referrals. We are very happy when we receive referrals because we know we have done a good job. Nowhere in any price quote can you see what is actually included. You can only rely on your, and others’, experiences. By the way, here’s to Mandurah Mitsubishi – thanks guys!

Mercedes-Benz E-Class

O

riginally unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show earlier this year, the all new and much anticipated Mercedes-B enz E-Class sedan has finally arrived down under. Yes, new it most certainly is but there’s no doubting it does look somewhat familiar. And there’s a good reason for this. This sleeker and more aerodynamic E-Class has ditched its slightly conservative looks of old and taken much of its design cues from the smaller C-Class and larger S-Class. Now sporting a closer resemblance to the rest of the lineup, its flowing lines and captivating curves have transformed the car into a visual work of art. With its proud grille, long bonnet, upright headlights and perfectly tapered rear end, it’s sometimes easy to forget that, in addition to its eye-catching looks, the new E-Class is also now one 48 MOTORING

Inside the cabin, the mix of the very latest technology and eye for design continues with the world’s largest in-car display screen. clarity is as thin as an Apple tablet and offers a raft of features and clever touches. Preference settings can even be saved and exported to USB so that they can be applied to another car, if required. Comfort levels in the cabin are outstanding and passengers will certainly enjoy the extra legroom created by the additional 65mm added to the wheelbase, the massage, heating and ventilating functions on the seats, and the heated arm-rests and center console padding. Launching into the Australian market with five different engine variants, the entry level E200 comes with a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo petrol option, delivering 135kW of power and 300Nm of torque, and the E300 achieves 180kW and 370Nm from the same, slightly tweaked engine. The third petrol option is the E400 fitted with a 3.0L, twin-turbo powered V6 with allwheel drive. This refined and powerful power-plant delivers an imposing 245kw of power and 480Nm of torque. The diesel options are the E220d and E350d. Fitted with a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo engine, the E220d produces 143kW of power and 400Nm of torque while still achieving an economy rate of just 4.1L per 100kms, 50 MOTORING

whereas the E350d with its 3.0L turbo-powered V6 delivers 190kW of power and a spectacular 620Nm of torque. An AMG version is expected to follow some time in 2017. The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class has given its rivals in its class plenty to think about with its mix of comfort, quality, new technology and efficiency. And, in our view, when it comes to visual impact on road, it steals the show. Mercedes itself has suggested that the 2016 E-Class is a multi-generation step change, a leap forward into the future of car form and function. One thing’s for sure, this is one mighty impressive sedan.

Lexus NX200t F Sport ollowing in the footsteps of its larger SUV sibling, the RX, this decidedly stylish compact crossover from Lexus was a relatively late entrant to the small, luxury SUV sector. However, since its launch at the Beijing International Motor Show in 2014, the NX has certainly been making up for lost time. Offering two-wheel-drive and all-wheel drive options, buyers can choose between the refined 2494cc petrol hybrid version, the NX300h, or the sporty NX200t propelled by its outstanding 1998cc petrol engine with 6-speed automatic transmission. Both come in Luxury, F Sport or Sports Luxury trims and both provide an undoubted visual feast for the eye. According to Lexus, this was a car that, rather than taking its design cues from other similar vehicles, sought out inspiration from trend setting fashion labels, watches and even running shoes. The result is a stunning, eyecatching design melded with the very latest auto technology. It’s bold and unashamedly unique. Given the opportunity to take the AWD NX200t F Sport out for an extended test, it was the versatility, performance and driver-focused technology that really hit home with us. Developed especially for the NX, the punchy turbo-charged petrol option in the NX200t delivers 175kW at 48005600rpm and 350Nm of torque between 1650 and 4000rpm. All of this available power on tap meant the vehicle was nimble and responsive in city traffic but also poised and effortlessly-smooth over longer journeys. Through its combination of impressive performance and precise handling on the roads, it was sometimes easy to forget that the NX was actually an SUV and not a high performance sedan. One thing that can always be counted on with Lexus is the huge amount of standard equipment on offer. Much of what is seen as added extras when it comes to its predominantly German competitors is available as part of the package in even the entry level 2WD NX200t. Our F Sport model included adjustable sports suspension, ventilated front seats, a more advanced 360-degree camera system instead of the regular reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, smart key entry and start, heated front seats, sat-nav and powered tailgate. The F Sport also came with a raft

of interior features and finishes, including 18-inch alloy wheels, a special front bumper and grille package, F Sport steering wheel, gear lever, pedals and scuff plates and 10-speaker audio system. Buyers, and typically for the NX that means young families and executive couples, will also be reassured by the seemingly endless list of safety features available. The body structure of the NX has, in the event of an accident, been designed to absorb shock and disperse energy away from the cabin while a total of eight strategically placed airbags are armed to deploy immediately. Our F Sport model also included Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert System, alerting drivers to unseen vehicles in adjacent lanes by illuminating a warning light on the exterior wing mirror. With a larger cabin that most of its rivals, the NX200t F Sport offers a combination of unbridled comfort, contemporary styling and typical Lexus luxury. Its new turbopowered engine has also added an extra release of power right through the rev range. After a week in our possession, this was one car that was definitely hard to hand back!

marque synonymous with some of the most ground-breaking designs in modern motoring, Jaguar is renowned for challenging convention and playing by its own rules. The E-Type, the XJ6 and the XJS, the list goes on. Truly unique cars, mixing intoxicating performance, inimitable design and matchless elegance. So, having been the inspiration behind much of what we see on the roads today, it has always been somewhat surprising to note its absence from the burgeoning luxury SUV market. Even Porsche, with the Cayenne, was prepared to risk upsetting its mainly traditional buyers by venturing into SUV territory - and that was ten years ago. Well, all good things come to those who wait and

with the arrival of the F-Pace, Jaguar’s first ever SUV, the term fashionably-late has never rung so true. This is a huge departure for a brand that has built its reputation on producing a never-ending line-up of memorable sedans and coupés but it is a masterstroke. Just like the Cayenne and Macan have done for Porsche, the F-Pace is set to introduce a whole new market of buyers to the cat-inspired brand, so much so, in fact, that Jaguar is expecting the F-Pace to become its most popular model. And let’s not forget, although this might be Jaguar’s first foray into the market, sister brand Land Rover also happens to know a thing or two about building luxury SUVs. Yes, it’s an SUV but this is very much a Jaguar at

heart. Styled by renowned car designer Ian Callum, the F-Pace’s front grille is unmistakably Jaguar and although over 80 per cent of the car’s parts are new, the chassis and mechanical bedrock of the car is based on the recently launched XF and XE sedans. Most importantly, it has the looks and presence of a Jaguar with its stylish features and luxurious touches that include both 19-inch alloys and bi-function Xenon headlights as standard. The luxury flows through into the cabin with leather seats, climate control, electric front seats, Meridien sound-system and an eight-inch colour touchscreen also standard across all models. Available in Prestige, Portfolio, R-Sport, S or First Edition trim levels, the F-Pace is offered with three engine options all with 8-speed automatic transmission. Kicking off the selection, and available on Prestige and R-Sport trims only, is a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo-charged diesel engine, delivering 132kW of power and 430Nm of torque. Cruising from 0-100km/h in 8.7 seconds, it achieves an impressive top speed of 208km/h. 56 MOTORING

The second diesel in the range is a 3.0L V6 turbocharged power-plant, delivering 221kW of power and 700Nm of torque. This powerful diesel surges from 0-100km/h in a healthy 6.2 seconds before reaching a top speed of 241km/h. Finally, the 3.0L V6 supercharged petrol engine will definitely get the pulses racing. Producing 250kW of power and 450Nm of torque, drivers will be propelled to 100km/h from a standing start in just 5.8 seconds while the brave will enjoy a top speed of 250km/h. With the comfort and adaptability of an SUV and the style and performance of a sporty sedan, the F-Pace remains true to the essence of what has always made Jaguars the great cars they are. Expect to see plenty on the roads. For further information on the all-new Jaguar F-Pace, visit Southern Land Rover at 1286 Albany Highway, Cannington, or call 1300 853 891.

ARTIST REVIEW

Nigel LAxton Nigel Laxton is a thought provoking, emerging contemporary Western Australian artist based in Perth, WA. Graduating with a Master of Applied Design and Art (Painting) in 2014 and a Graduate Certificate in Design in 2007, each from Curtin University, WA, Nigel has a growing reputation throughout Perth and regional WA. His art practice as a whole is influenced by phenomenological enquiry, a philosophical framework that relates to the structures of personal experience and consciousness. Using a process of mindful and reflective practice he attempts to generate ideas and concerns that direct the flow of painting, drawing on particular instances he has experienced and the emotional responses they confer. “My paintings relate to an artist’s sensory encounters with landscape” says Nigel.

They are rarely representational but focus on the philosophical, social and cultural aspects of landscape.” He is currently working on a series of semi-abstract paintings that will be displayed for the first time at CASM in February 2017. These new works explore the concept of ‘Ambiguous Romanticism’: contemporary art that has its base in an appreciation of both natural and urban environments, individual expression and a deliberate ambiguity in the composition and colour of the paintings. “Ambiguous paintings challenge traditional theories that the artwork is representative of the viewer’s experience and that the elements of the painting are identifiable with material objects” explains Nigel, although the ambiguity can however “act as a stimulus to aesthetic response and involve the viewer in a creative experience.”

“They are based on cultural geography and the feelings and perceptions of being in wild places.

Ambiguous Romanticism exhibits from Feb 10 to Mar 5 2017. Nigel will deliver an artist talk during the course of the exhibition at a date to be announced.

by Corrine Rapley ‘Whispers on the Wind and Water’ exhibited in July, was a culmination and continuation of Corrine Rapley’s twelve month artist residency during 2015 at Contemporary Art Spaces, Mandurah (CASM). Predominantly a realistic artist, Corrine challenged herself within the residency to experiment and explore some new techniques, styles and media without feeling pressured to stay within her true to life style. The Peel Harvey estuary and Mandurah surrounds, including the waterways, animals and vegetation became her source of inspiration for this fresh body of work. Her fascination with apparent shapes and shadows of creatures and faces in patterns, clouds, rock formations and especially paperbark trees and tree skeletons also featured within her work. “Some look like they were alive with reaching fingers and limbs, fantastical creatures and faces growing out of the wood” explained Corrine who bought her observations alive in ‘Djilda Existence 1 & 2’, ‘Djilda Tree Spirits’, ‘The Supplication’ and ‘Where the Wild Things Are’.

image of some of the wood remnants that were lying in amongst the mud on the foreshore. The layering of acrylic washes over and around the paper allowed Corrine’s unusual shapes and subtle creatures to emerge. In addition to collage, Corrine also experimented with moulding and texture pastes, and impasto gels to achieve an array of sculptural effects. The results were seen in her symbolic artworks ‘Hope Floats’, a large feather floating high above the ground, as well as ‘Crimson Flight’ and ‘Wings of Change’ featuring a bee attracted to a red blossom and in the latter, dragonflies circling over the magnified section of a dragonfly’s wing. ‘She Whispers on the Wind’, Corrine’s final work for the exhibition, was an audience favorite due to its bright, stylised appearance and subtle skyline apparition. “In this one I started a ‘go with the flow’ painting to classical music with the theme of my exhibition in my mind. Strangely one day as I walked into my studio I could see the shape of a lady with a symbolic baby in her arms.” Corrine’s work can continue to be seen on her website www.corinerapley.com

Using rice paper as a collage medium Corrine built layers of texture within her paintings, creating both real and perceived depth. In Djilda Existence 1 & 2, she collaged onto heavy watercolour paper and board to produce a 3D Djilda Existence 2

Inspired by the Fairbridge Festival, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2017, production got underway in early September with the film, the first to be entirely shot in the Peel region, featuring an all-star cast of some of Australia’s best known and most talented screen performers. The first Australian feature film from Elton and his second since the release of Maybe Baby in 2000, the film follows a group of annual festival goers at the regional musical event over three consecutive years. Showcasing the diversity of this typical Australian community as it gathers together for the event, the production combines music and romance together with Elton’s trademark

quick wit and satirical edge. Actor Robert Sheehan (Misfits, Red Riding Trilogy) has been confirmed to take a leading role alongside Rebecca Breeds (TV’s Pretty Little Liars, Home and Away). The diverse cast also includes John Waters (TV’s Offspring), Magda Szubanski (Happy Feet, Babe) and Michael Caton (Last Cab to Darwin, The Castle) along with Deborah Mailman (The Sapphires), Caroline Brazier (Rogue, TV’s Rake), Kelton Pell (Last Ride, Red Dog: True Blue), Peter Rowsthorn (Paper Planes, Kath & Kimderella), Adrianne Daff, Sam Longley (Where the Wild Things Are), and Christiaan van Vuuren and Nick Boshier (TV’s Bondi Hipsters, Soulmates). Ben Elton, whose screenwriting credits include The Young Ones, Blackadder and Mr Bean, has also written no less than fifteen best-selling novels, including Stark, Popcorn and Dead Famous. He wrote and directed the Olivier Award-winning, international smash hit Queen musical We Will Rock You that ran in London for twelve years, has been performed in twenty-eight countries and is currently touring Australia. Elton says of the film, “Festivals are the great levellers. We’re all equal in the queue for the Portaloos and no one looks cool dancing in a swamp. Stories collide, cultures clash and romance blossoms beneath the glorious Australian sun. Then it rains. Whoever said music was the food of love didn’t play the theremin! I have always wanted to make a film set in an iconic Australian landscape that speaks to audiences around the world. To see Three Summers come to life and go into production and to have such an extremely talented ensemble cast attached really is a dream come true.” Three Summers is produced by Michael Wrenn of Invisible Republic and leading WA producer Sue Taylor of Taylor Media. Executive Producer is Mark Anderson. “The support from the heritage town of Pinjarra, Fairbridge Village and the Noongar people in the Peel region has been both amazing and humbling at the same time,” says Wrenn. Three Summers is due for release in 2017.

Stories collide, cultures clash and romance blossoms beneath the glorious Australian sun.

OVERCOMING SLEEPLESSNESS

It affects nearly everyone at some stage or another and it’s the next day when we feel it the most. SIeeplessness creates mood-swings, drains motivation and saps our productivity.

T

here is nothing worse than not dropping off within a few minutes of your head hitting the pillow. For those that regularly have a bad night’s sleep the initial feeling can be one of panic. Yet again, it’s going to be one of those nights and, even worse, one of those jet-lagged-feeling mornings that follow. It’s easy to break the cycle, according to the experts. Just keep to a routine and go to bed at the same time every night. Ensure caffeine isn’t drunk after lunch, and remove electronic devices from the bedroom along with any pending paperwork. Ensure the room is dark, read a book, imagine relaxing on a beach… it’s bound to work. Surely, remembering the dos and don’ts alone should be tiring enough to guarantee falling asleep within seconds! But for most insomniacs even the best preparation and planning will regularly fail. This has led to many sufferers trying a different approach - the 4-7-8 technique. The 4-7-8 technique is based on a practice called ‘pranayama’, which was developed by ancient Indians, a civilisation that dates back thousands of years. It is all about regulating breath – it’s very simple and it makes sense. Dr Andrew Weil, an American physician, is the best known supporter of the 4-7-8 breathing technique and he believes it works through its calming effects. When feeling anxious or stressed, people tend to take short shallow breaths. The 4-7-8 technique promotes deeper breathing so that more oxygen is taken in. This relaxes the nervous system, which encourages calmness. Sleep should then come easily. Start the technique by placing the tip of your tongue behind your two front teeth. Keep it there throughout the exercise. 62 HEALTH

Exhale completely through the mouth and make a whooshing noise while doing so. Now comes the counting. Close your mouth and breathe in through your nose for a count of 4. Hold your breath for a count of 7. Exhale completely with the whooshing sound for a count of 8. Dr Weil recommends carrying out this cycle four times.

POLLEN ALLERGIES IN DOGS

D

oes your dog get ear infections, lick its paws, or get an itchy belly during spring and summer? Does it develop a bad smell or drive you mad scratching? Well, if the answer is yes to some or all of the above, the chances are your dog has a pollen allergy. Unlike humans who get hay fever from pollen allergies, dogs tend to get skin problems and the classic areas affected are the ears, paws, belly and armpits. Originally, it was thought that pollen allergies worked systemically. That is, the pollen would be inhaled, get absorbed into the blood stream and then cause skin problems. However, it is now thought that pollen causes issues by landing directly on the skin. This explains why the areas most commonly affected are the hairless areas of the body. When it comes to treating the problem, the process used by veterinary clinics is much the same as that used by an asthmatic to

manage their conditions, i.e. treat flare-ups and look for longer term control.

T R E AT I N G F L A R E - U P S

Secondary infections are a regular occurrence with these skin conditions as the pollen allergy creates both heat and moisture in the skin - a perfect environment for yeast and bacteria. Therefore, it is important to quickly treat the infections as this is where much of the itchiness comes from. To do this, medicated shampoos or antibiotics are generally used. It’s also important to settle down the itching and, traditionally, this has been through the use of steroids. In most cases, these drugs are well tolerated and very effective, however, occasionally, side-effects are seen. To combat these, a range of new medications is now available, which is extremely effective at quickly reducing the itchiness, avoiding many of the side effects associated with steroids. Ask your vet about these new treatments.

LONGER TERM CONTROL

Longer term treatments are often started at the same time as flare-ups are treated as many of the treatments can take some time to work. Controlling fleas and anything else that may contribute to skin irritation is imperative as is improving the oil balances in the skin as most dogs with allergies have a defective oil barrier in their skin. This means a greater amount of pollen contacts directly with

the skin, which, in turn, makes the problem worse. A zinc and fatty acid supplement can be added to the dog’s food on a daily basis to help. Weekly bathing is also recommended. Depending on the dog’s skin condition, this may be with a medicated shampoo or an oatmeal based shampoo. This helps control infections in the dog’s skin as well as washing away pollen particles. This can then be followed up with an oatmeal based conditioner, which is not rinsed off. Antihistamines may also be useful but they can be a bit hit and miss. Talk to your vet about which antihistamines are worth trying. Desensitisation can also be used. After determining which pollens the dog is allergic to, a series of injections, containing small amounts of the allergen, can be given. Over time, the dog’s immune system gets used to the pollen and stops overreacting. To develop a plan normally requires several visits. A vet will initially control flare-ups and then start some longer term management. Treatments are then fine-tuned depending on the response from the dog. Skin conditions can be frustrating to manage but by working closely with your vet, a great deal can be done to keep the pet comfortable.

Restaurant Review

THE STAGE DOOR WATERFRONT RESTAURANT

A MAINSTAY OF THE MANDURAH eating out scene, The Stage Door Waterfront Restaurant’s glorious waterside setting, relaxed ambience and convenient positioning have always been major drawcards. Offering stunning views across Mandjar Bay and located next door to the busy Performing Arts Centre, it’s been a popular haunt for local diners for a number of years. With husband and wife team Leighton and Christy Yates now in charge, the restaurant has recently been winning awards for its creative cuisine. As we write, the restaurant has just picked up the prize for Best Australian Contemporary Restaurant in WA in the 2016 Savour Australia Restaurant and Catering Hostplus Awards. Time we paid a visit! Arriving for lunch, we quickly placed ourselves next to the large floor to ceiling windows to get the optimum vista. Thankfully, we had booked as the restaurant was filling up fast. Staff informed us that every single table had been booked for lunch, a sure sign that there was plenty to look forward to as we perused the menu. For lunch, diners can choose from either the $15 lunch menu, available Monday to Saturday, or from the more extensive à la carte menu. We decided to dine à la carte and plumped for the Sticky Prawns served on a bed of red cabbage and sesame slaw for our entrée. This tasty, gluten-free dish is one of the restaurant’s most popular starters and it’s easy to see why. We loved this Asian-influenced plate and thoroughly enjoyed the combination of the fresh flavoursome prawns and the crunch of the slaw. In fact, fish lovers will love the impressive range of entrées on offer here with Oysters, 66 FOOD & WINE

Flash-Fried Squid, Crab Tostadas and a Pea and Lemon Risotto with seared scallops, all available to try. For the main course, we were steered towards the Confit Pork Belly and what a choice. Served with beetroot purée, seared scallops, charred baby courgette and roasted turnips, the pork had been perfectly cooked and presented. Beautifully tender and full of flavour, the meat literally melted in the mouth. Quite delicious! Other mains that caught our eye included Pan-seared Chicken Breast stuffed with sage butter and served on a wild mushroom risotto, Malaysian Seafood Laksa, and Beer Braised Lamb Shank with roasted root vegetables and herbed mash potato. Maybe next time! With a wide variety of local and national wines available, the restaurant also has an excellent selection of beers on tap, bottled beers and ciders. Plus, there’s an extensive selection of cocktails available to enjoy pre or post show. And, finally, if you enjoy a hearty roast, then don’t miss the special weekly Sunday Roast for $23, a price that includes a glass of Rothbury Estate wine. Highly recommended, don’t miss the chance to pay the restaurant a visit this summer. Just make sure you book!

GOING ALTERNATIVE By Anne Mazza, Mazza Wines

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO while holidaying in Spain, my husband David and I were in the final stages of getting ready to plant our own vineyard in the Preston Valley. However, as we sampled the fantastic local wine with the stunning vineyards of Rioja stretched out before us, we began to question the choice of grapes we intended to use. All set to plant Merlot and Shiraz, our visit to Spain inspired us to do something different. After researching our climate, we realised that our farm, located in Donnybrook within the Geographe wine region, could be the perfect place to grow Tempranillo and Graciano, the two main varieties used to make Rioja wine. David had already discovered his love of Portuguese wines from earlier travels and that led us to source Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cao, Bastardo and Sousao. And that’s how Mazza Wines came to grow alternative wine varieties. The Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show classes an alternative wine variety as any type of grape that is not considered mainstream or widely planted. Believe it or not, there are actually around one and a half thousand varieties of wine grapes grown in Australia although we usually see the same ones over and over again in bottle shops and on restaurant menus. This is slowly starting to change. Many wine producers are embracing the opportunity to experiment with the hundreds of different grape varieties available to them by choosing vines more suited to their local climates and soils. Australian wine producers are free to grow any variety of grapes anywhere unlike many of 70 FOOD & WINE

their European counterparts, who are bound by strict rules of their appellation, or wine region, which governs which grapes can be grown and how wines must be produced. We also have a new generation of wine makers who are better travelled than ever, who have completed many vintages overseas and have brought their grape growing and wine making discoveries back home with them along with a passion to experiment further. One of the better known alternative varieties in Australia is the Spanish red grape Tempranillo, which is becoming increasingly popular. The Geographe Region is recognised as an area that can consistently produce excellent quality Tempranillo. The Geographe Wine Show now also has a well-established awards category for highlighting the alternative varieties coming out of its own region and other parts of Australia. The south west of WA is predominantly made up of small boutique wine growers. Small producers are an adventurous lot, often willing to try something new and different. Our wine is very personal. Most of us live at our vineyards and if we are producing an alternative style of wine, there will usually be a story behind it, often revolving around a passion to produce something unique. So don’t be intimidated next time you see a variety that you don’t know or that you are unsure how to pronounce. Ask about it. Give it a try. It might be your next favourite wine.

SPICY FETA RISSOLES Chilli, lemon and feta create a delicious kick that will liven up any mealtime. Make a batch of these rissoles and take them out for a special, weekend summer picnic! The rice mixture can be prepared and refrigerated for a few days so it’s a great recipe for those with prep time available earlier in the week. Makes 10-12

Ingredients 1 red onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 red chilli, finely chopped 2 tbsp olive oil (plus extra for frying) 225g risotto rice 1 litre hot vegetable stock juice of half a lemon

3 tomatoes, chopped 2 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped 200g feta, roughly chopped 1 egg, lightly beaten, in a large bowl 115g dried breadcrumbs in a large bowl salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method Heat the oil and gently fry the onion, garlic and chilli until softened. Stir in the rice to coat with the oil. Pour in the stock along with the lemon juice and tomatoes. Taste and season with salt and pepper, if required. Bring to the boil then cover and reduce the heat. Simmer for around 20 minutes or until the rice is al dente. Stir in the parsley and spoon the rice mixture into a large dish. Place in the fridge for the mixture to chill and firm. When cold and firm, form the mixture into 10-12 balls. Press small chunks of the feta cheese into each ball. Dip the rissole balls, one at a time, into the egg and then into the breadcrumbs to be coated evenly. Place all the rissoles onto a tray and chill again in the fridge for 30 minutes. Pour enough oil into a pan to generously cover the bottom. Fry just a few rissoles at a time, gently turning, over a medium heat until the breadcrumbs are a deep golden colour. Place the rissoles on kitchen paper to drain excess oil. Serve with a green salad and slices of lemon.
