“I cannot speak highly enough about Tony as an agent. We found him at all times professional, knowledgeable and a great negotiator… I would recommend him to anyone selling their property.” Grant Lilleyman, City Beach

“Tony Young - well done. Couldn’t have asked for a better agent. The entire process has been a pleasure. If you’re looking for someone to sell your house, call Tony.” Mia Barbagello, Wembley Downs

“Tony did an exceptional job of selling my house. From helping me prepare my house for sale to guiding me through the negotiations and settlement I cant fault him. Previously I had bought and sold properties with other agents and without a doubt the experience with Tony was far superior. I have recommended Tony to friends and their feedback has been the same.” Paula Pattisson, Scarborough

“Tony was dedicated to selling our property in a pretty tough market. He gave great advice on the placement, marketing and set up of the property prior to sale. He was then very active in generating leads and I was especially impressed with his follow up of leads and convert the best opportunity.” Luke Willcock, West Leederville

“We made the decision to appoint Tony as our agent for the sale of our property in South City Beach as we had attended a couple of home opens with Tony as the agent. He was courteous & most importantly followed up our visits to gain feedback each time - exactly what you want as a seller in a tough market. Tony was upfront & knowledgeable in guiding us through current market sales & valuations, resulting in us listing our house at a competitive price & ultimately selling it from the 1st home open. We could not speak highly enough of Tony’s tenacity, professionalism & care in all of the dealings we have had with him & his team at Optimus. A great agent & agency!” Angela Newland, City Beach

“We were very pleased how Optimus carried out marketing strategy and achieved a maximum price. Tony Young was the only agent to regularly followup and even assisted us buying after we sold. Most importantly, you delivered what you said you would. We recommend you with your knowledge and experience to anybody wishing to sell their property. ” Des & Nancye Gower, City Beach

“Thank you for your patience and professionalism in the recent sale of my late fathers home. It was a difficult time for us and we appreciated your patience, guidance and ‘can do’ attitude. Not only did we achieve a better result than we had hoped, but the experience right through until settlement was stress free and we felt assured you were looking after our best interest at every opportunity. Thanks again Tony and you’ll be the first call we make when we downsize our beloved family home in the near future.” Robyn Witherow, City Beach

“Tony Young worked tirelessly for us and provided sound advice to expedite the sale of our property. Tony’s knowledge of current market conditions and negotiation skills were crucial in achieving a favourable result selling our home. I would recommended Tony to anyone looking for an excellent agent.” Travis and Janelle, Wembley

“Tony Young successfully sold our property in a “soft” market at an excellent price! Thanks Tony, very well done, we are delighted.” Liz Crawford, West Perth

“We selected Tony because Optimus long standing reputation in the Western suburbs. During the entire process Tony was professional, upfront and at all times courteous. He delivered exactly what he promised. We are delighted with the outcome.” Matt Howes, Wembley

GALLOWS GALLERY OPERATING WITHIN AN ATTRACTIVE

light-filled space in Mosman Park, Gallows Gallery represents the work of some of Australia’s most prominent and successful artists. Displaying a diverse range of art forms, including painting, sculpture, glass and ceramics, its carefully chosen collection of exhibits also features artworks from many leading Perth-based creatives. Director of the gallery is Kathryn Stafford, a second generation art dealer with over 30 years’ experience in the art industry in both WA and overseas. With a strong passion for Australian art, Kathryn took over the reins of the business in 2010 with one simple goal in mind. “I wanted to create a gallery that redefines the way in which Australian art is bought and sold. A space where artists love to exhibit and buyers love to visit,” says Kathryn. The list of artists represented reads like a who’s who of the art world and includes Crispin Akerman, Andrew Baines, Greg Baker, Margaret Benoit, Nellie Crawford, Robert Dickerson, Tony Jones, Bronwen Newbury, Lori Pensini, Dave Spencer, Peter Usher, Linda Skrolys, Henryk Szydlowski and Lauren Wilhelm. In addition to its regular displays and exhibitions, Gallows Gallery also offers art valuations and advice for collectors looking to develop their collection. Further services include framing, delivery and hanging, conservation and restoration advice, and a wedding and gift registry for special occasions. Featuring a delightful courtyard, the gallery is available to hire for launches and corporate or private functions.

A r t i tj a FINE ART A SHARED PASSION FOR ART

together with a deep respect for ancient indigenous culture and traditions led Anna Kanaris and Arthur Clarke to establish Artitja Fine Art. Specialising in Australian Aboriginal art sourced from remote and regional community art centres, over twelve years on, it has become one of Perth’s most reputable indigenous art galleries, renowned for its accessible and informative approach to collectors. Artitja Fine Art initially began in 2004 by holding pop up exhibitions in a number of different Fremantle locations and by conducting private appointments. Over the years, the business has built up a large enthusiastic following, and today, it continues to operate in exactly the same way. Word of mouth and a strong community connection have continued to see the business grow and, with their South Fremantle home adorned by numerous pieces of artwork, buyers enjoy a unique, personal one-on-one service in a relaxed environment. With an aim to connect different cultures through art, accessibility and affordability have always been the key. Artworks start from around just $200 and its wide range of artists includes acclaimed Noongar Bush Sculptor and Weaver Janine McAullay Bott, who has been represented by Artitja since 2006. In recognition of its achievements and in light of its continued loyal following, the gallery was recently awarded the Corporate Social Responsibility award at the 2016 Fremantle Business Awards. At a time of uncertainty about ethical sourcing and proper practice in indigenous art, the award was a welcome affirmation of the gallery’s values. E M M A B LY T H OPERATING FROM HER GALLERY IN MANDURAH ,

Emma Blyth is fast becoming one of Western Australia’s most sought-after artists. Emma’s paintings express a passion for vibrant colours and her unique ability in translating Australian culture to canvas has struck a chord with both national and international collectors. Utilising large brushstrokes throughout her work, her paintings portray scenes from Australia’s rugged outback to the beautiful beaches and forests of Western Australia’s southwest. Her inspiration and love of the outback through her own extensive travels is plain for all to see. Spending months at a time camped on the back of a Ute, sketchbook in hand, mesmerized by the beauty of the landscape, her paintings are inspired by the waterfalls and gorges, turquoise bays and rocky islands together with the accompanying wildlife and flora. Book Review

S a b r i n a’ s Db y iS arb rti n ya h aDh n e e d s THIS LITTLE BOOK

packed full of useful information will transform how gardeners connect with their own patch of the natural world. It’s a simple, downto-earth, informative guide for all types of gardening requirements whatever the Australian climatic zone. Sabrina’s Dirty Deeds is the third publication from Sabrina Hahn. Hahn has been sharing her gardening nous on ABC radio in her own inimitable style for over 25 years as well as writing about it in her regular column in The West Australian. Bitten by the gardening bug at an early age, Hahn was just four years old when she began handpicking flowers and foliage from her grandmother’s garden to create her very own tiny gardens in baking trays. She later formally studied horticulture at Bentley TAFE and, since then, has worked in many different parts of Australia, getting to understand how soil types and climate affect how various plants are grown. Clearly passionate about plants and sustainable gardening practices, Hahn encourages fellow gardeners – both beginners and experienced types – to enjoy getting stuck in and getting their hands dirty in order to

34 ART & EVENTS

take pleasure in a garden that thrives. Month by month, Hahn gives ideas of what to sow, cut back, transplant, propagate or feed. She advises on how to rotate crops, how to control pests in an organic way, how to prune varieties of rose and how to partner up fruit trees for absolute fruiting success. Sabrina’s Dirty Deeds also covers how monthly chores can vary according to the various climate zones within Australia. It’s easy for gardeners to check her simple map and table to find out their climate zone and then read the relevant section to get the gardening advice they need. Sabrina’s Dirty Deeds is an amusing and chatty, nononsense book, reflecting Hahn’s fun and easy-going personality. Illustrations, charts, facts, tips and hints intersperse the text, helping to make everything easy to follow. With so much practical information packed into such a small format, Sabrina’s Dirty Deeds is the perfect companion for Australian gardeners, throughout the entire year.

Available now from all good bookstores, RRP $19.99. Published by Fremantle Press.

trending this summer The latest fashion trends from North of the River’s resident fashion expert.

Vibrant colours, light silky fabrics and lots of movement – be inspired by this summer’s most daring and freshest fashion trends. Yellow is the colour of the moment whether canary bright, buttery pale or marigold rich. It symbolises warmth, energy and happiness and is the perfect choice as the colour of the season. Deliciously sugary pastels, good enough to eat, will trend in fashion too, such as candy pink, mint green, lemon chiffon, pale coral, taupe and soft hydrangea blue. These ice-cream, candy shades create a romantic and understated look – perfect for carefree sunny days. In contrast, expect to also see pops of rainbow brights, metallic and iridescent colours as well as, of course, white - quintessential for any fashion season. An element of movement is a must for many of the pieces this season - it helps to bring an outfit to life. Clever modern tailoring has been employed to bring delicate pleats, ruffles, folds and tucks to tops, skirts and dresses to create fluidity and amazingly billowy silhouettes. If you haven’t already done so, invest in this summer’s major on-trend piece - a micropleated skirt. Most of the hemlines for dresses and skirts will be mid to long, allowing the fabric plenty of freedom to flow so go for the length that best suits your frame. As usual, with glorious days and warm evenings, there are options to bare a bit of skin and, this season, 38 STYLE

it is the turn of the shoulder. There are plenty of off-theshoulder or strapless pieces to choose from, pieces that feature cut-outs or have open backs – look out for gorgeously dramatic, draped, open backs on dresses. There are also skinny bandeau tops that show off a section of skin and they balance beautifully with loose and voluminous shirts, jackets and pants. Boudoir-esque silk slips, which started to re-emerge back in winter, are now well into their comeback from the 1990’s when fashion icons, such as Kate Moss and Sarah Jessica Parker, wore them with a playful effortless vibe. They are a timeless fashion classic and are to be found in pastels, bright colours or metallics. Team a slip dress with a thin tee underneath or with a bomber jacket thrown over the shoulders for evenings. Seek out a light bomber in a wonderfully tactile fabric, such as silk, chiffon or satin.

RENEE E VA N S FOR WESTERN AUSTRALIAN jewellery designer Renee Evans, design has always come naturally. Entirely self-taught, from a young age Renee began creating keepsakes and treasures for her loved ones and before her twentieth birthday, she opened her store, Emporium of Eshe in Bunbury. As well as her retail business, Renee has also created Bowerbird, her very own unique jewellery collection. Crafted with gold and rhodium plated sterling silver, the brand came to life after she received a generous inheritance from her grandmother – a treasure chest of exotic jewellery from her worldwide travels. Inspired by both the fragility and strength of nature, her latest Spring/Summer collection is another beautiful range of delicate intricate pieces. “The range is comprised of this eclectic compilation of feathers, insects and natural wonders. It’s made with the intention of each piece becoming a personal talisman,” says Renee. Bowerbird jewellery offers the unique option of customising selected items, furthering the concept of creating an heirloom collection to symbolise love and friendship, marking life’s journeys with personal remembrances. Gaining increasing traction in the fashion world, Renee’s pieces have been regularly worn by Jessica Mauboy, Courtney Eaton and Jesinta Campbell whilst often appearing in the pages of InStyle, Cosmopolitan and Cleo magazines.

Jaguar F-Pace

A

marque synonymous with some of the most ground-breaking designs in modern motoring, Jaguar is renowned for challenging convention and playing by its own rules. The E-Type, the XJ6 and the XJS, the list goes on. Truly unique cars, mixing intoxicating performance, inimitable design and matchless elegance. So, having been the inspiration behind much of what we see on the roads today, it has always been somewhat surprising to note its absence from the burgeoning luxury SUV market. Even Porsche, with the Cayenne, was prepared to risk upsetting its mainly traditional

“... very much a Jaguar at heart ...” buyers by venturing into SUV territory - and that was ten years ago. Well, all good things come to those who wait and with the arrival of the F-Pace, Jaguar’s first ever SUV, the term fashionably-late has never rung so true. This is a huge departure for a brand that has built its reputation on producing a never-ending line-up of memorable sedans and coupés but it is a masterstroke. Just like the Cayenne and Macan have done for Porsche, the F-Pace is set to introduce a whole new market of buyers to the cat-inspired brand, so much so, in fact, that Jaguar is expecting the F-Pace to become its most popular model. And let’s not forget, although this might be Jaguar’s first foray into the market, sister brand Land Rover also happens to know a thing or two about building luxury SUVs. Yes, it’s an SUV but this is very much a Jaguar at 52 MOTORING

heart. Styled by renowned car designer Ian Callum, the F-Pace’s front grille is unmistakably Jaguar and although over 80 per cent of the car’s parts are new, the chassis and mechanical bedrock of the car is based on the recently launched XF and XE sedans. Most importantly, it has the looks and presence of a Jaguar with its stylish features and luxurious touches that include both 19-inch alloys and bi-function Xenon headlights as standard. The luxury flows through into the cabin with leather seats, climate control, electric front seats, Meridien sound-system and an eight-inch colour touchscreen also standard across all models. Available in Prestige, Portfolio, R-Sport, S or First Edition trim levels, the F-Pace is offered with three

engine options all with 8-speed automatic transmission. Kicking off the selection, and available on Prestige and R-Sport trims only, is a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo-charged diesel engine, delivering 132kW of power and 430Nm of torque. Cruising from 0-100km/h in 8.7 seconds, it achieves an impressive top speed of 208km/h. The second diesel in the range is a 3.0L V6 turbo-charged power-plant, delivering 221kW of power and 700Nm of torque. This powerful diesel surges from 0-100km/h in a healthy 6.2 seconds before reaching a top speed of 241km/h. Finally, the 3.0L V6 supercharged petrol engine will definitely get the pulses racing. Producing 250kW of power and 450Nm of torque, drivers will be propelled to 100km/h from a standing start in just

5.8 seconds while the brave will enjoy a top speed of 250km/h. With the comfort and adaptability of an SUV and the style and performance of a sporty sedan, the F-Pace remains true to the essence of what has always made Jaguars the great cars they are. Expect to see plenty on the roads.

For further information on the all-new Jaguar F-Pace, visit Southern Land Rover at 1286 Albany Highway, Cannington, or call 1300 853 894. MOTORING 53

On Test

Lexus NX200t F Sport

F

ollowing in the footsteps of its larger SUV sibling, the RX, this decidedly stylish compact crossover from Lexus was a relatively late entrant to the small, luxury SUV sector. However, since its launch at the Beijing International Motor Show in 2014, the NX has certainly been making up for lost time. Offering two-wheel-drive and all-wheel drive options, buyers can choose between the refined 2494cc petrol hybrid version, the NX300h, or the sporty NX200t propelled by its outstanding 1998cc petrol engine with 6-speed automatic transmission. Both come in Luxury, F Sport or Sports Luxury trims and both provide an undoubted visual feast for the eye. According to Lexus, this was a car that, rather than taking its design cues from other similar vehicles, sought out inspiration from trend setting fashion labels, watches and even running shoes.

“... bold and unashamedly unique ...” The result is a stunning, eye-catching design melded with the very latest auto technology. It’s bold and unashamedly unique. Given the opportunity to take the AWD NX200t F Sport out for an extended test, it was the versatility, performance and driver-focused technology that really hit home with us. Developed especially for the NX, the punchy turbo-charged petrol option in the NX200t delivers 175kW at 4800-5600rpm and 350Nm of torque between 1650 and 4000rpm. All of this available power on tap meant the vehicle was nimble and responsive in city traffic but also poised 54 MOTORING

and effortlessly-smooth over longer journeys. Through its combination of impressive performance and precise handling on the roads, it was sometimes easy to forget

that the NX was actually an SUV and not a high performance sedan. One thing that can always be counted on with Lexus is the huge amount of standard equipment on offer. Much of what is seen as added extras when it comes to its predominantly German competitors is available as part of the package in even the entry level 2WD NX200t. Our F Sport model included adjustable sports suspension, ventilated front seats, a more advanced 360-degree camera system instead of the regular reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, smart key entry and start, heated front seats, sat-nav and powered tailgate. The F Sport also came with a raft of interior features and finishes, including 18-inch alloy wheels, a special front bumper and grille package, F Sport steering wheel, gear lever, pedals and scuff plates and 10-speaker audio system. Buyers, and typically for the NX that means young families and executive couples, will also be reassured by the seemingly endless list of safety features available. The body structure of the NX has, in the event of

an accident, been designed to absorb shock and disperse energy away from the cabin while a total of eight strategically placed airbags are armed to deploy immediately. Our F Sport model also included Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert System, alerting drivers to unseen vehicles in adjacent lanes by illuminating a warning light on the exterior wing mirror. With a larger cabin that most of its rivals, the NX200t F Sport offers a combination of unbridled comfort, contemporary styling and typical Lexus luxury. Its new turbo-powered engine has also added an extra release of power right through the rev range. After a week in our possession, this was one car that was definitely hard to hand back! Priced from $61,864.90 drive away (NX200t AWD F Sport from $74,180 drive away). For further information on the Lexus NX range, contact Lexus of Perth on 9340 9000 or visit the showroom at 359 Scarborough Beach Road, Osborne Park. MOTORING 55

BMW X3

I

t was back in 2003 that BMW first unveiled the X3, the world’s first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), and thirteen years on it’s a car that continues to sell like hot cakes. The current second generation X3, however, is a significantly different vehicle to the model originally released at the Detroit Auto Show back in the early noughties. Launched in 2010, it arrived as an altogether larger beast, closer in size to the original BMW X5. This immediately slotted the X3 into the upper end of the mid-sized SUV sector while the X5 was pitched head on with the Range Rover Sport and Audi Q7. Despite its larger proportions, however, it still managed to retain its impressive road-handling skills. The introduction of BMW’s TwinPower turbo-diesel engines also delivered increased power and improved economy ratings into the diesel range.

“... one of the most appealing choices in its sector ...” Four years later, 2014 saw the release of an upgraded X3 and this current model offered a timely range of added extras and improvements in the face of increased competition in the market. Over $8,000 of additional value was added to some models in the range with a number of extra features originally on the options list standard at no extra cost. For the entry level models, the 135 kW X3 xDrive20i and the 140 kW X3 xDrive20d, standard features now included electric seats with memory function, Business Navigation system, Automatic Tailgate function and an upgrade to 18-inch alloy wheels. These additional extras complemented the existing standard features, which included rear view camera, front and rear Park Distance Control, cruise control with braking function, an interior mirror with anti-dazzle, Bluetooth 56 MOTORING

functionality and BMW radio with USB interface. For the top of the range petrol and diesel models, the 180 kW X3 xDrive28i and 190 kW X3 xDrive30d, a number of additional features were also added as standard, again, at no extra cost. Automatic Tailgate function (already standard on the X3 xDrive30d) was included together with Professional Navigation, smartphone connectivity (including extended Bluetooth functionality and voice control), an exterior mirror package (with anti-dazzle and folding function), Bi-Xenon headlights, Top View lumbar support and 18-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels. With the continued growth in luxury SUV sales worldwide, the X3 now finds itself in a very different world to the one it launched into over a decade ago. However, BMW’s mid-sized SUV remains one of the most

appealing choices in its sector. Both spacious and comfortable, it’s incredibly sure-footed on the road and awash with luxurious touches. Its economical TwinPower Turbo diesel and petrol engines also keep running costs extremely competitive. This pioneering SUV is still setting the standards.

Interior Design

colouring the home

N

ot brave enough to step outside the neutral comfort zone? Using colour doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Getting the colour palette right throughout the home can be a difficult and timeconsuming project. Committing to the latest invogue shades can in turn leave a home looking dated and out of fashion quicker than expected. But playing it safe and resorting to the same neutral tone everywhere can also make rooms feel cold and boring. It’s all about balance and what works

 HOME 59

for each individual home. Take a look at the following trends for 2017 and make this summer the season to get colour right. Taking its cue from the fashion runways, yellow, a colour that exudes feelings of optimism and happiness, is set to be the next big thing in interiors. It can be eye-poppingly bright right through from pale to buttery, so it’s important to know how each shade can be maximised best. Strong bright yellow walls, for example, will appear garish and dazzling in sunny rooms so either tone the colour down with a pastel or paint the walls in a less showy colour and save the strong shade for accessories. Adding a stylish chair, piece of crockery, clock or cushions in a vibrant yellow is all that’s needed to bring interior spaces to life. Currently, there is a clear trend influenced by Nordic and Scandinavian interior design ideas with the focus on functionality, excellent craftsmanship and subtle elegance. Muted natural colours are the shades of

choice, particularly when paired with saturated dark blues. Walls in stone and soft grey-beige tones are a perfect backdrop for inky blue accents. There will also be tones of neutrals working together, such as shades of beige or the palest of champagne pink, and this adds a touch of welcome warmth to a home. For more impact, selected walls in deep blue-greens, khaki or dark blue will be ideal for showcasing framed black and white artwork. Or add shots of colour with pieces of furniture and accessories. The year ahead will certainly bring plenty of new colourful opportunities for the home. But if going bold still feels too daunting, try concentrating on painting around two-thirds of the wall space with a neutral shade. Then, use a darker or lighter tone of the neutral shade for features, such as an alcove, indented wall or skirting board, and accessorise with bursts of yellow, deep green or blue.

OUTDOOR LIVING

STONE GARDEN FEATURES

O

ur glorious summer days and balmy summer evenings have always provided the ideal backdrop to relaxed outdoor living. Every year, we migrate to the outdoors over summer - the only thing that changes is how to incorporate the latest outdoor designs. With the trend towards smaller block sizes, this summer it’s all about functionality. Space outside is often limited so every square metre has to be maximised to serve is purpose. Let’s start with the outdoor furniture. An increasingly popular look is to add a hammock, two-person swing, hanging egg chair or a chaise longue to create a feeling of relaxation and comfort. This season, dining areas will also feature that relaxed feel. Chairs will include deeper cushions and luxurious fabrics and will incorporate a rocking or swivel movement, enabling guests to comfortably enjoy a long lazy lunch or drinks well into the evening. Furniture is also being updated with teak, stainless steel and concrete; materials that all work together for a solid, simple and modern look. As for cushions, throws and pillows, these will feature fresh and vibrant colours, including aquamarine, yellow, tangerine and neon brights. The idea of a low-maintenance entertaining space continues to appeal to homeowners. Try laying a concrete floor, composite decking or artificial grass – there will be no need to outlay time or money in upkeep in the future. Another favourite low-maintenance outdoor project is to add native plants, such as westringia, bougainvillea, kangaroo paw, cordyline, geranium and marguerite daisy. These plants are water-wise, easy to look after and very adaptable for landscaping. For a great source of information, take a look at the Water Corporation’s website for native plants that grow well in particular areas. Edible plants, such as lemon thyme, rosemary and sage, are also popular additions to any outdoor space. As well as being native, these plants are perfect for outdoor cooking too. Vertical walls are an ideal way to grow these plants as they save space, supress noise and the variety of colour and texture offers an attractive surround. Whatever your plans, now is the perfect moment to start. Outdoor living is with us again.

Tony Young

Using this experience, Rhett found a niche market for a real estate agent with skills as a lawyer to protect the interests of clients and to facilitate smooth real estate transactions. Today, as the Principal and Licensee of Marron Real Estate West he uses his negotiation skills honed as a lawyer to help clients achieve the best price for their most valuable asset – their home.

She has been nothing short of amazing, we couldn’t be happier with the service. Being overseas it was important to us we had someone we could trust to make decisions on our behalf if required or to give practical recommendations. Unlike other property managers we have come across, Bree actually does actively ‘manage’ our property. We would highly recommend Optimus to anyone.” J.Dyson (Lessor) Sept 2016 “The team at Optimus Real Estate are great! Q

Where do you think Perth and particularly the suburbs north of the river are currently at in the property cycle?

Q

GV I believe we are still currently in an adjusting phase. There may be further adjustments at the top end of the market but that now seems to be moving, especially for the $1.5m plus market where buyers are seeing value and trading up. Some buyers may lose on the sale but, on the other hand, are gaining on the purchase.

TY Growth is most likely to be achieved in established areas where there has been significant capital expenditure on improvements to public and private amenities.

TY We are now towards the bottom of the cycle, which is why the smart money that has seen periods like this in the Perth property market before is now out looking for opportunities. RM In my opinion, we are currently in a state of rebound from the bottom of the cycle. Over the last few years the slowdown in the mining section has led to many people leaving the state, leading to high vacancy rates for owners of investment properties. Many have been listed for sale, causing prices to soften. However, with greater foreign investment in the eastern states, this market is now booming and WA has, as a result of this, become affordable again. I, therefore, expect to see the WA market bouncing out of its low period and northern and western suburbs to show solid signs of growth over the coming years. 66 PROPERTY | TALKING PROPERTY

What do you see as the key influences for growth north of the river?

GV I don’t expect see any substantial growth over the next three years or so but the western suburbs will remain popular suburbs to live in particular with families because of the private schools.

RM The push by the government to allow greater density of living has given greater opportunity to developers and an opportunity for more people to live in areas that would be otherwise unaffordable. We also believe that the desire for young families to obtain large residential properties and block of lands big enough for a garden and a pool for the children will drive growth.

Q

Are there any property hotspots north of the river that you expect to outperform the market over the next 12 months? GV The eagerness of buyers to live close to good schools continues to drive demand. For me Floreat is a great suburb due to its good sized blocks and relatively reasonable priced homes, however, in my opinion,

middle-tier priced homes in Mosman Park are the best value in the western suburbs. TY I particularly like the look of City Beach due to the opening of the new surf club and associated restaurants and cafés. The area has further benefitted from the recent opening of the new Empire Shopping Centre on Gayton Road. RM Any property that is capable of being subdivided or that is likely to be able to be subdivided in the future will be highly sought after by both seasoned developers and private developers. These properties will also be popular amongst buyers as they will provide more affordable options in high demand suburbs.

Q

Do you see any change in the rental market over the next 12 months?

GV We find the market gets busier over the summer months with many students looking for properties, however, the market appears steady and I predict it will remain that way for the near future. For owners, presentation is everything and a discussion with an experienced rental agent is always recommended. TY I believe the rental market is set to stabilise. The end of the first homeowner grant will balance out the negative impact of the mining downturn. RM The rental market is showing signs of improvement for investors with days on the market and vacancy rates falling. In the western suburbs, we are averaging seven days on the market, which, given all the negative 68 PROPERTY | TALKING PROPERTY

press on the rental market, is very encouraging. This demand should slowly lead to better rental yields and also have a positive effect on the sale price of investment properties too.

Q

Looking into your crystal ball, where do you think property prices will be at in 2025?

GV By 2025, I expect prices should have gone up by between 25 and 35 per cent depending on the price of the property, although the high end will probably move a bit slower. I predict a shortage in supply of homes for the baby boomers. TY Notwithstanding the extraordinary anomalies of the last eight years, the best predictor of the future is always the past trends. Therefore, the old rule of thumb should apply with property doubling in value every eight years. RM I expect there to be a significant change in the density of living in Perth. More and more buyers will want to live closer to the city on large blocks of land, opportunities that will become increasingly rare. I, therefore, predict there will be a strong demand and high prices paid for large blocks of land (600sqm+) close to the CBD and transport routes. On the other hand, the significant level of high density construction, particularly in apartments, could lead to an oversupply of stock, resulting in high vacancy rates and low rental prices.

Natural Balance Urbane Projects

This magnificent home was built on the river’s edge at the end of a 100m long driveway. Backing onto Swan River Trust land, the westfacing block had a fall of 7m from front to back.

 74 PROPERTY | LUXURY HOMES

SECTION 75

With a brief to provide accommodation for both the owners and their teenage children, including separate living areas, the home also needed to be designed in a way that the owners could enjoy a comfortable retirement without having to use stairs. A solar passive design was used along with natural stone. Difficulties encountered during the build included lengthy delays in getting Swan River Trust approvals, challenging soil conditions and the solar passive design brief due to the orientation of the block. Extra consideration also had to be made for landscaping and materials that would withstand the harsh elements of the river, and for the challenges of building a livable space to suit four adults. Using a combination of natural stone and timber for flooring, wall cladding and cabinets throughout, the home features a central entry way that acts as a link between the two separate wings of the house. It also offers wonderful views of the Swan River framed by huge two-storey windows. MEET ...

Malcolm Goode, Artique Homes For the best part of thirty years, Malcolm Goode and his team at Artique Homes have been designing and building some of Perth’s finest custom homes. With a reputation for immersing himself in each project from start to completion, no matter the size, Malcolm has been the driving force behind the company’s continued success. We caught up for a quick chat.

Q How did Artique Homes begin? A After moving to Perth as a teenager to study

design and building, I worked for a number of different architects and their builders before joining AV Jennings. Here, I worked my way up to Area Manager of Housing but eventually became somewhat disillusioned with the project homes industry. So I took a few months out and then decided to launch into Artique Homes. I wanted to pursue a career in a sector of home building whereby I could provide unrivalled, high quality craftsmanship and service but with absolute transparency to clients.

Q What do you do differently at Artique? A As Designer, Builder and Managing Director,

customers have just the one contact at Artique – me. No dealing with multiple staff every time you call up and no ideas lost in transition. Our homes are unique, crafted to achieve our clients’ desired result and built to an award-winning standard within budget. We take time to ensure both the home design and specification of inclusions are exactly to the client’s requirements and then, and only then, we develop a quotation, including all fully itemised site works, ensuring there are no hidden costs later. This provides peace of mind to owners, helping to build a strong, trusting relationship during the build.

Q What budget ranges do you cater for? A Our homes range from around $350,000

up to $4m in value. We cater for all budgets and, most importantly, treat each client as if they are the most important client in our business. Both Co-Director John Glorie and I are involved through every stage of the process, whatever the size of home. Strong client liaison and communication is the key to the process and this commitment to clients has resulted in almost 50 per cent of our business coming from repeat work or word-of-mouth referrals. A client can stay with us for life.

Q Do any projects stand out over the last 28 years? A Building twenty to thirty homes a year presents

a number of highlights and challenges and each home we build is as important and as memorable as the next. However, we did recently build a 3-storey beach-front home at Burns Beach, which took up the majority of the block, necessitating the installation of an electronic turntable to allow vehicle access to the garage at the rear. One of the project’s major challenges was the property’s lack of onsite storage, requiring materials to be delivered on the day they were due to be used. The house’s location on the beach also prevented any high level works once the sea breeze commenced. However, we planned every single aspect for the client and also produced a detailed building programme, which we do with all clients, so that they could monitor progress. I believe we are the only builder in Western Australia that does that.

Perry Lakes Estate Daniel Cassettai Design

This Daniel Cassettai Design home in Perry Lakes Estate may be minimalist in design but it is massive on impact. The brief was to create a high impact, wow factor home without the use of too many different colours and materials that was both contemporary and timeless. The unconventional, yet simple front elevation is emphasised by an exposed steel fascia that borders the home, framing the balcony and the home’s entrance in a bold fashion. The strong, simple, structural elements of the home (brick, timber and steel) have been exposed in the front elevation so that the form rather than additional feature materials is the focus of the overall design. The challenging triangular site provided the opportunity to explore some unusual design ideas to exploit its dynamic shape. This allowed the visually dominant garage to be moved to the rear of the lot creating extra opportunities to articulate the front

elevation. This resulted in the design of a flexible gym and living area that overlooks a plunge pool in the front setback area. A formal entry and void area above the stairwell leads directly into the main focus of the home, the upstairs living area. This features an open plan kitchen, living and dining area that transitions, via floor to ceiling stacking doors, to a large north-facing balcony; the main outdoor living area. The balcony also features a roof with louvres that can be adjusted according to the sun’s path. The master bedroom, large dressing room and luxurious ensuite conjure images of a world-class hotel suite and bedrooms two and three plus a further bathroom are in a separate wing, creating distinct parents’ and children’s zones. M

ake sure you apply as soon as possible for your Australian Parent Visa because they are under review - a euphemism for ‘about to go through a radical change.’ A recent Productivity Commission report identified that each Parent Visa granted costs Australia between $350,000 and $420,000. This report was quickly followed by an announcement from the Government that it was conducting a review of these visas to find out what exactly the Australian people wanted. This included a suggestion that a temporary five year visa for parents of Australians might be introduced. However, what I didn’t hear the Assistant Minister for Immigration mention was that the Temporary Parent Visa comes with the suggestion that the Australian sibling would be responsible for their parents’ medical costs while on this temporary five year visa. So, what happens at the end of this five year period? Are residents supposed to pack their parents back off home with their medication to a country they have not lived in for 5 years, where they may have no contacts and may not be eligible for medical or social benefits once they return? We expect the review will recommend a massive increase in the costs of Parent Visas and some options

86 MIGRATION MATTERS

will disappear entirely. So be sensible. Act now while the cost and conditions of this visa are still reasonable. We expect the change to happen in the first half of 2017. Currently, six different types of Parent Visas can be accessed by parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents where 50 per cent or more of their children reside in Australia. Current costs of a Contributory Parent Visa are $43,600 per person and from the figures released this would seem to be the bargain of the century. It is important to make the correct choice of visa as getting it wrong at this stage would be disastrous. Open Door Migration is a Western Australian based migration company with extensive experience in all areas of migration and all types of visa. The team is headed by Jacqui Ure, who has 20 years’ experience in the field. The team recognises that everyone has a unique set of personal circumstances and and uses its skills and knowledge to ensure that each case receives up to date, appropriate and accurate advice pertaining to the circumstances of the case. tips for feeling fit and fabulous If you have put on a few extra kilos over the cooler months, there’s still time to tone up. And the good news is there’s no need to take drastic measures! Just follow these simple tips and you can still look great on the beach this summer! Be aware of what you are putting into your body. Keeping a food diary makes it easy to pinpoint how those extra kilos were added and at what times of the day you slip into bad habits.

Whatever you eat, eat it slowly as it takes up to twenty minutes for the brain to register the feeling of being full. Consider how much is on your plate and, if necessary, buy smaller plates if it helps!

Eat breakfast to kick start your metabolism. This will also help reduce the cravings for a quick muffin or sugary snack while you are out and about.

Include a little of what you fancy every now and then. It’s unrealistic to imagine that you’ll never eat chocolate again. If treats are completely banned, they become all the more desirable and could lead to you falling off the healthy wagon completely.

Plan and prepare snacks in advance. If there is a fruit salad, a smoothie, nuts or carrot sticks readily prepared, it is easier to bypass the biscuit tin. Drink more water. Sometimes thirst can be mistaken for hunger so have a glass of water before choosing to snack. Cut back on calorie-packed alcohol and, of course, give up smoking. Indulge more in food that is particularly good for you. Eat blueberries, raspberries and apples for their vitamin C and antioxidants (why not buy frozen fruit and use for smoothies), avocados for vitamin E, oily fish for omega 3, greens for calcium and potassium, and tomatoes as they can increase energy levels. 88 HEALTHY LIVING

Find time to get active. Schedule it – little and often - into the week. The cheapest and easiest activity is walking. Find a route with a hill and focus on putting energy into every step. Go swimming, cycling, or try something new, such as a team sport. Take a friend along so that you’re less likely to find an excuse not to go. Stress can lead to weight gain through increased appetite, and being stressed doesn’t help the way you look. Block off time in the week to meet up with a friend, take a yoga class, dance to a CD, or book in a massage. And finally, reward yourself with new fitness gear, a pedicure or massage and enjoy your new-found radiance!

GREENWOOD YOGA ACADEMY

E

stablished in 1999 by Margaret and Keith Willcocks, Greenwood Yoga Academy has grown to become one of Perth’s leading yoga businesses noted for its excellence in both yoga classes and courses. “Having previously taught yoga in the Greenwood area for over 15 years, on establishing the academy in Wangara, the name of the business was derived from its history and its associations with the practice of yoga,” says Margaret. “Green, being synonymous with plant life, relating to natural growth, life force and relaxation,

90 HEALTHY LIVING

and wood being the fibrous material that forms the main substance of the trunk and branches of a tree used for fuel. This relates to the eight limbs of yoga and the fire created within our body through our physical practices of asana and pranayama (poses and breathing techniques). Therefore, with green wood also being associated with flexibility, the name Greenwood was a natural fit!” The academy is dedicated to making a difference in people’s lives. It promotes that yoga is the ancient science of life, which offers therapeutic and dynamic practices to help people gain a better understanding of themselves. Over a short period of time, through the regular practice of yoga, people experience a noticeable improvement in their general health, with aches and pains alleviated, improved sleep

RTO51556

and a better enjoyment of life. The friendly experienced teachers at the academy help to identify the type of yoga practices best suited to clients from the range of classes available for beginners, ongoing, restorative, yin/yang and dynamic flow. The academy’s focus for classes is to ensure clients gain a safe, enjoyable and inspirational experience whilst gaining a sound understanding of the techniques and fundamentals of yoga. bucking the trend chris rogers

Hardie-Grant Books

F

ormer Australian, Western Australian and Victorian opener, Chris Rogers has recently announced his retirement from the sport. His last first class game for his English county team, Somerset, saw him score a century in each innings; a fitting way for this gritty batsman to bow out of the game. Now, Rogers has released Bucking The Trend, a story that highlights his fierce determination and hunger to succeed in the sport. Most Australian test players do things a certain way. Get into the Australian cricket pathway early, go to the Academy, keep the game simple and avoid tinkering too much with technique. Not Chris ‘Buck’ Rogers. Instead, Rogers forged a career in cricket in his own distinctive style, learning from his mistakes and imparting that wisdom to others. In many ways, he was a throwback to a different era when players spent as much time with their clubs, states or counties as they did with the national side. Bucking The Trend is the story of a journeyman cricketer who, after one test at the age of 30, took another five years to regain his place in the Australian side. What followed was a rollercoaster ride, featuring emotional centuries in three Ashes series while skirting

94 SPORT

disaster with a series of blows to the head at a time when they are feared more than ever. His road to the

top was far from straightforward and there is a rare richness in this cricketing tale.

The Wrong ’Un: The Brad Hogg Story With Greg Growden Penguin Books

B

orn in Narrogin, George Bradley Hogg is one of cricket’s most recognisable personalities and at 45 years old he continues to be the cult hero of the Big Bash League. On the eve of the new season, having chosen to leave the Perth Scorchers and join up with the Melbourne Renegades, The Wrong ‘Un offers a fascinating insight into this popular character. From his childhood cricket obsession in rural Western Australia to the day he donned the baggy green, Brad Hogg overcame numerous setbacks and bouts of self-doubt. During a seven-year gap between his first and second Test appearances, he turned his hand to a variety of jobs, most famously hitting the streets as a postie. Through persistence and enthusiasm he won his way back into the national team, and was twice part of Australia’s champion World Cup winning sides. After retiring prematurely in 2008, he returned with a bang in 2011, starring in the BBL and once again being selected for Australia. For the first time, Brad reveals his remarkable journey from the bush to the MCG and beyond, and from crippling insecurity to hard-won self-acceptance. It’s a memorable book, at times even confronting as Hogg discusses his perilous state

of mind after his early retirement and marriage breakdown in 2008. However, equally unpredictable

and hilarious, it’s an inspirational story of a man who will never give the game away.

Restaurant Review

PEKO PEKO with stores south of the river in Attadale and down south in Dunsborough, Peko Peko first began serving its freshly made takeaway food on St Brigids Terrace, Doubleview. Specialising in creating delicious authentic sushi and Asian-influenced cuisine using only the finest and freshest of ingredients, a visit to Peko Peko is always a treat. Fresh is an over-used word when it comes to food-related marketing hype but here you can taste the freshness of the food in every mouthful. Sushi is actually made not once but twice a day so you can always be assured that you will be eating something that has literally just been created. We popped in for a lunchtime bite and began by sampling the selection of fabulous miso soups. Available in three different flavours, Salmon and Pumpkin, Chicken and Tomato and Moroccan Lentil, these make for a great starter or healthy lunchtime snack. Quite delicious! Next on the menu for us was a gluten-free Seared Salmon and Avocado rice paper roll. Low in carbs and high in nutrients, these light and flavoursome rolls are best enjoyed with one of Peko Peko’s tasty dipping sauces. Miso ginger was our flavour of choice. Again, excellent! We, of course, had to try some sushi and the Teriyaki Chicken with Avocado, the restaurant’s most 96 FOOD & WINE

popular option, was an immediate choice. Served with turmeric rice instead of the standard white rice, this new added rice option, which is available with all sushi rolls, provided an extra depth of flavour as well as a unique twist to a favourite dish. There’s also a healthy brown rice option for all sushi rolls. To finish with, we tucked into a superb Chicken Salad. One of four different salad options on the menu including Vegan Noodle, Avocado and Prawn, these gluten-free dishes are the perfect healthy choice. They also make for an ideal summertime meal. Serving deliciously fresh food prepared by highly qualified chefs, Peko Peko is truly a unique takeaway experience. Owners Samantha and Troy Bottegal have designed this store to offer health-conscious customers access to high quality cuisine, combining both speed and quality of service. Offering an extensive range of lunch and dinner options, together with a catering service serving a fantastic array of platters, the Doubleview store is open 7 days for lunch and dinner. Erin Cerinich, Director of Operations, The Herdsman AS THE FRESH-FACED LEADER of The Herdsman, Erin Cerinich has hit the ground running. A third generation member of this family-owned gourmet grocer in Churchlands, she plans to continue the tradition of fresh produce and high quality cuisine. Erin intends to stay true to the family values and original philosophy on which The Herdsman was built with a renewed vision of modernising the business. What are your earliest memories of The Herdsman? It’s not so much one particular memory, it’s more about a feeling that I have. The Herdsman has always been a warm and inviting place for everyone, including me. As a child, along with my sisters, I would be collected from school to be brought here. When we arrived, we would be greeted by the team, who would take us to help out with odd jobs while mum and dad finished off for the day. I would often sit in a big crate listening to stories about the orchards and market gardens while cleaning onions or bagging the apples that had arrived from the growers that day. It was probably around that time that my love for food and The Herdsman began. What can a new visitor to The Herdsman expect? A food lover’s delight! Many of my fondest memories involve food, sitting down with family and friends connecting and creating special memories. Entering our store is the beginning of that journey. Our aim is to create a warm experience and friendly environment. The amazing array of colours and the sweet aromas that fill the air are something not unlike what you would find in the market gardens, I can’t get enough of it. We have worked tirelessly to find that perfect balance of fresh produce, the finest of culinary selections and specialty lines to excite any foodie. We are proud to house one of Perth’s best florists, a gourmet butcher and fishmonger to make us a onestop destination. Our team of dedicated foodies are there to help and will 98 FOOD & WINE

make sure that every person leaves with a trolley full of Perth’s freshest and finest produce. What are your top product picks for Christmas? Christmas is my favourite time of year; it’s so special to me. Food is what brings it all together; our store is filled to the brim with really exquisite options for family gatherings. From the farm direct designer flower centerpiece, to my great grandma’s traditional pudding and everything in between, we provide the complete Christmas experience. The perfect gift for the foodie in your life has to be one of our specialty gourmet hampers. Containing our top grocery lines, handselected and carefully gift packed, they are an absolute must. What are you planning to bring to the business? Herdies has been with me all my life, being a third generation owner, it’s in my blood. My team and I are always exploring new ideas and flavour combinations through research and cooking tests each week. Nothing reaches the shop floor until we have tasted it. With increasing competition, we have recently appointed an expert product buyer, who is solely dedicated to sourcing unique, local boutique products. Bringing exclusivity to The Herdsman has added real value to our brand. The team constantly builds lasting relationships with suppliers and loyal customers so we can listen, learn, and be on top of the latest trends. Our store is an exciting place to be with numerous new and enticing items hitting our shelves every week. The future of The Herdsman is looking bright.

Bar Culture

CANTON BAR there’s an increasing choice of small bars in and around the Perth CBD but there’s nothing quite like Canton Bar on Hay Street with its stylish Chinese décor, contemporary fit-out and spacious chic interior. It takes a bit of finding but, once experienced, its intoxicating mix of dumplings, cocktails, craft beers and unusual spirits is hard to ignore. Located upstairs behind an imposing red archway and door, this popular city haunt encompasses an intriguing past. Located on the site of Canton Chinese Restaurant, the original Chinese restaurant in Perth, the upstairs space was also home to one of Perth’s most visited gambling dens before the opening of the Crown Casino. Reopening in 2008 as one of Perth’s first small bars, the current management took over the premises in 2012 and have created one of the CBD’s most unique night time experiences. With its musical backdrop of lounge beats and underground hip-hop, along with occasional live jazz sets, the range of alcoholic concoctions is quite unlike anything to be found locally. Featuring an enticing mix 100 FOOD & WINE

of Chinese and Asian-inspired cocktails, hard-to-find wines, spirits and Japanese whiskies, the bar is also home to a increasing range of craft beers and guest beers that are rotated on a regular basis. To complement the range of drinks, the Asianinfluenced menu features a delicious range of quick bites, which are ideal for sharing. Choose from Beef Pan-Fried or Seared Asian Green Dumplings, the Char Siu Bao (BBQ Pork Buns), Uncle Tony’s Chinese Jerky, and Fried Prawn Wantons to name but a few. Many of the dishes are both suitable for vegetarians and glutenfree. Available for hire for both private and corporate functions, don’t miss the chance to visit this unashamedly-individual, gem of a bar this summer. Located at 532 Hay Street, Canton Bar is open Tuesday to Friday 3pm to 12pm, and Saturday 6pm to 12pm. For further information on venue hire, call 9325 8887 or go online at www.cantonbar.com.au

Recipe

quinoa summer salad If you have yet to discover the delights of quinoa, then this Mexican-influenced recipe is the perfect place to start. The delicately nutty seeds are so simple to prepare – it’s similar to cooking rice – and then, it’s just a matter of combining all the ingredients. Makes 4 large servings or 6 smaller servings as a side dish

Ingredients Salad 150g quinoa (white, red or black) 1 green capsicum, chopped 1 red capsicum, chopped 2 avocados, chopped 3 large tomatoes, chopped 400g can kidney beans, rinsed and drained 4 spring onions, sliced

Dressing 1 tablespoon olive oil juice of 1 lime 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 1 tsp ground cumin 1 green chilli, seeds removed and finely chopped 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves salt and pepper

Method

Rinse quinoa thoroughly in running water in a fine strainer or cheesecloth. Drain. Place quinoa in a saucepan and add 300ml water. Cover and bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the quinoa starts to look transparent and has released little white sprouts. You may need to lift the lid a little to prevent boiling over. Chill the quinoa until cool. In a large bowl, mix together all the dressing ingredients. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add all the salad ingredients and mix well.

Wine Regions of WA

The GEOGRAPHE The alternative road south by anne mazza

W

hile motoring south on that wellworn highway between Perth and Margaret River many travellers will be unaware of the fact that they will be driving through the largest and most diverse wine region in Australia, the Geographe. Curving south along the coast of Geographe Bay from Harvey to Busselton, and extending inland over the Darling Range to Collie and Donnybrook, the Geographe wine region is home to about 40 vineyards. Most of these are small boutique businesses and many have picturesque cellar doors set amongst beautiful rolling valleys and majestic jarrah forests. Touring the Geographe offers a very personal wine discovery experience because almost every winery in the region is family-run. Which means when visiting the cellar door, very often the person behind the counter will be the same person that prunes the vines, picks the grapes and produces the wines. Being such a large region, the Geographe has a large variation in soil types and micro climates, which translates to ideal growing conditions for many grape varieties. Generally, the area is best known for the traditional French varieties of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. However, The Mediterranean climate also makes the area perfect for growing less well known varieties from Spain, Portugal and Italy. There are over 1600 varieties of wine grapes in Australia and the Geographe has many small producers who are experimenting and pioneering the production of alternative varieties. The emerging popularity of these ‘new’ wines encouraged the Geographe Wine Industry Association 102 FOOD & WINE

to hold the first Alternative Varieties Wine Show in Western Australia in September with renowned wine writer Jane Faulkner as Chief Judge. The show was a great success with entries from around the state and a number of gold medals were won by local producers. Tempranillo was the strongest alternative variety class with gold awarded to Willow Bridge Estate, Mazza Wines, St Aidan Wines, Bakkheia, Green Door Winery and Harvey River Estate. Other alternative wine producers to win medals included Smallwater Estate for Zinfandel, Ferguson Falls Estate for its Tempranillo blend and Mandalay Estate for its Durif. For more information on this burgeoning wine region, go online at www.geographewine.com.au

Willow Bridge Estate

The largest winery in the Geographe wine region, Willow Bridge Estate is a family owned business operated by principals Jeff and Vicki Dewar, who bought the picturesque 180-hectare hillside property in 1996. Situated high on the western watershed of the Ferguson River, the vineyard has spectacular views over the coastal plains. The environment, climate and soil types set the area apart from the more traditional wine growing regions of the state and provide an environmental combination never previously utilised for the production of premium wines. With a vision to produce premium, quality varietal wines for both the domestic and international market, in less than a decade the estate has already produced an impressive array of outstanding wines, the most notable

Willow Bridge Estate being the classic Black Dog Shiraz. In addition to that, at the recently held Geographe Wine Show, the winery swept the board picking up numerous awards together with six gold and three silver medals. The awards included Wine of the Show and Best Red Wine for its 2015 Gravel Pit Shiraz, Best Rosé for its 2016 Rosa De Solana together with Trophies for Most Successful Producer and Excellence in Winemaking.

Whicher Ridge Estate

Located on the north facing slopes of the Whicher Range, a short drive south of Busselton, Whicher Ridge Wines is fast making quite a name for itself. Owned and operated by Neil and Cathy Howard, the artisan winery produces small quantities of single variety, single vineyard wines using traditional winemaking practices. Named as one of Australia’s Ten Dark Horse wineries in the prestigious 2015 James Halliday Wine Companion, the winery also received a 5-star rating from Halliday in the 2015 and 2016 Wine Companion. James Halliday comments, “The quality (and value) of the wines produced is quite exceptional. When you factor in their collective 40 plus years’ experience, their 7ha estate vineyards, and the purchase of high quality grapes from Frankland River, it begins to make sense.” The Whicher Ridge Wine Sensory Garden is also a must visit. The only one of its kind privately owned in Australia, it has featured in Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine, Australian Country and Country Style. Engaging all five senses of sight, smell, touch, hearing and taste, it features plantings themed to each wine variety and is situated alongside the cellar door. Finally, 104 FOOD & WINE

visitors to the winery can also participate in a game of pétanque. One of the fastest growing participant sports in the world, it is closely associated with wineries and cellar doors in other wine growing regions in Australia and Europe.
