elcome to the second edition of South of the River Magazine. Perth’s brand new bi-annual lifestyle publication, bringing you the very best of life south of the Swan. Firstly, a big thanks to all of you who got in touch on the release of our first issue. I’m delighted that South of the River has proved so popular and it was great to hear from so many of our new readers. It’s clear from the interest the publication has generated that our new concept has really resonated with both residents and visitors alike. Much like many of you, we love venturing north too but it’s remarkable what you can discover right on your doorstep when you look a bit harder and, hopefully, we have awakened you to a few local gems. Please do continue to send in your comments and suggestions, they are very much appreciated. It’s clear that print media is very much alive and kicking. Well, we sort of knew that anyway! Yes, we live in an increasingly digital age but glossy, high quality magazines continue to thrive through their unique way of interacting with their audience. Magazines are portable, don’t take an age to re-boot and don’t run out of battery power. Entertaining, informative and tactile - where else can you find information on a myriad of topics so quickly, so easily and for free? All new forms of communication have their fifteen minutes of fame and some last a whole lot longer but let’s not get too carried away with the moment. It was once said that TV would kill off radio and video hire shops would kill off the cinema. Neither has happened and the truth is that all media will continue to co-exist. However, for us at South of the River magazine, ink on paper will always be the medium for luxury and highly photographic content. Enjoy the read and remember if you would like to receive your own personal copy of South of the River magazine delivered directly to your home, simply email your name and address to the following address, enquiries@blueskymedia.net.au Until next time,

At the Studio Bistro and Gallery, Yallingup, a unique combination of all three disciplines ensures a memorable experience for visitors to this fabulous contemporary art space, which also includes a delightful bistro showcasing innovative continental cuisine. The gallery is surrounded by picturesque gardens, expertly landscaped by a Yallingup gardener, to complete the magnificent artistic setting. Carefully selected, award-winning and emerging 26 ART
artists from all over Australia present their outstanding works at the gallery. Stunning land and seascapes, abstracts, still life and beautiful representational paintings feature. Visitors can purchase pottery, woodwork and high quality jewellery and view a striking dinosaur collection. It’s the perfect space for art lovers to relax and enjoy time away from the pressures of daily life. The collection of art, skillfully curated by the gallery owner, brings many visitors back to the gallery over and over again. Don’t miss the opportunity to pay a visit this winter. EVER WANTED TO OWN AN ORIGINAL piece of artwork
from one of Western Australia’s most popular artists? Well, here’s your chance. From graphic designer to fully-fledged painter, Mandurah-based Emma Blyth is fast making a name for herself as one of Western Australia’s most soughtafter artists. Her work expresses a passion for vibrant colours and, through a use of large brushstrokes, her paintings portray vivid scenes from Australia’s outback to its beautiful beaches, forests and beyond. Courtesy of Emma, one lucky reader will win an original Emma Blyth artwork specially commissioned for this edition of South of the River magazine. Signed by the artist, the painting will focus on an area previously untouched by Emma, offering the winner the opportunity to own a unique piece of collectable Western Australian art. “When I was specially commissioned to paint a piece for South of the River magazine, my initial thought was Freo. Fremantle has always been close to my heart and I love the vibrant café scene and coastal lifestyle. The historical location of Bathers Beach has inspired this piece. It contains all the modern elements of Fremantle as well as splashes of its unique and colourful history.” To win this fabulous prize, all you have to do is answer the simple question below:In which south west town is Emma Blyth’s gallery located?
To be entered into our prize draw, either email the answer to editorial@blueskymedia.net.au or post the answer to Emma Blyth Competition, Blue Sky Media, PO Box 600, Mandurah, 6210. Please include a contact telephone number and your address. Closing date for entries is Friday, 14th October, 2016, one entry per person, please. Good luck! ARTIST SHOWCASE | ART 29
CHRISTIAN FLETCHER WITH GALLERIES IN Mandurah and Dunsborough , Christian Fletcher is one of Western Australia’s most awarded and respected photographers. His love of photography, the Australian landscape and its inspirational visuals have given rise to a career spanning over 24 years and his extraordinary collection of images has gained him huge popularity both at home and abroad. His vast body of work not only includes his collection of Australian coastal images but also takes in landscapes in New Zealand, America, Canada, Papua New Guinea and even Iceland. Christian started out by learning his craft developing black and white images in a secluded darkroom in his parents’ house. After working as a photographer focusing on commercial, portrait and wedding photography, a visit to a gallery in Esperance inspired him to open his first gallery in Dunsborough in the early 2000’s. As his popularity grew so did recognition from his peers. The recipient of numerous awards during his career, in 2011, the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) awarded him both the Western Australian and the Australian Professional Landscape Photographer of The Year. In 2014, he was again awarded the Western Australian Professional Landscape Photographer of The Year, and in the same year, he won the inaugural International Landscape Photographer of The Year competition. 30 ART | ARTIST SHOWCASE
Never one to rest on his laurels, Christian is always on the lookout for unique subject matter and new areas of photography to explore. His latest foray into the world of aerial industrial photography has revealed a captivating yet dark side to environmental destruction, images that evoke conflicting emotions and shock over the destruction of our natural landscapes. A passionate advocate for protecting the natural world we live in, Christian is a vocal supporter for sustainability and action on climate change from a grass-roots level. He lives with his family in Dunsborough and, in addition to running his two galleries, he regularly teaches online and in workshops both across Australia and around the world. WINTER ELEGANCE
The latest fashion trends from South of the River’s resident fashion expert.
Hurray for cooler weather! Now we can indulge ourselves with shopping sprees to find beautifully textured layers and warm cosy sweaters. However, this winter, seasonal fashion is much more than just that; there are trends with elegant and modern lines that will definitely be hard to ignore. Sure to be a favourite trend is classic Victoriana. It is romantic and refined and features high necklines, buttons, intricate lace and gigot sleeves on shirts and dresses. Deep burgundy is the colour of choice but there are also pieces in soft blush and, of course, monochrome. It is a very structured look and helps to create stunning silhouettes but it can also be toned down by adding a pair of skinny jeans, for example, to a form-fitting lace shirt. The seventies look still works for winter but it has a definite contemporary edge. It is centred on feminine floaty blouses, turtlenecks - neat and ribbed or cashmere, A-line skirts and wide-leg pants, and the palette includes burnt orange, tan, blue and deep navy. For footwear, add a pair of skin-hugging ankle or over-the-knee boots – perfect with an A-line skirt or a dress. Or, if you’re looking for an athleisure vibe, wear a pair of white or buff sneakers with cool androgynous pieces, like oversized sweaters, softly tailored pants, jersey tapered
joggers and long luxurious coats in restrained colours – monochrome or neutrals. For these cooler months, keep hair naturally beautiful - it’s a trend that follows on from spring and summer but it does require a little effort to pull off. Embrace your hair type and encourage its natural texture and movement with the use of thickening sprays before blow drying or by working in a little volumising powder. A carefree look with body and movement is in. Menswear is always about balancing function with style and, for this season, that means investing in timeless staple pieces that also have sportswear influences. Shawl and roll neck cardigans are great over shirts, and perfectly acceptable for businesscasual weekdays, or over a t-shirt for the weekend. For jackets, there’s a trend for shorter tailored styles as well as the bomber, which never seems to go out of fashion.
... cool androgynous pieces, like oversized sweaters ...
34 STYLE
This winter, the bomber jacket is shorter and streamlined, and goes perfectly with sleek pants or tapered joggers for any offduty occasion.

n ATA L I E D O N O VA N IT WASN’T UNTIL AFTER the birth of her first child in 2008 that fashion designer Natalie Donovan finally decided to follow her dreams. Studying a two year course in Fashion and Textiles at the Challenger Institute of Technology, Fremantle, her jewellery and clothing label, Wild Horses, was launched in 2012 and, earlier this year, her brand new boutique opened on Napoleon Street, Cottesloe.
Q
When did you begin to realise you could make a career in fashion design?
A
Initially, I guess I didn’t really think of making a career out of it as everyone told me what a tough industry it was to succeed in. I really wanted to give it a shot though and began by hand making my own jewellery and taking it to markets to see if people appreciated my creations. From there, I started my clothing range and this led to an opportunity to appear at the Perth Fashion Festival. Next, I opened pop-up shops to help research which clientele were best suited to my brand. Now, having my own boutique, I am so grateful for all the support I received along the way.
Q A
Where did the idea for your label come from?
I have always loved styling and dressing casual pieces with edgy cool items and mixing things up with a contrasting shoe or bag. Wild Horses represents me and my own style with its naturally inspired, fun and accessible designs and dark rebellious undertones.
Q A
What are the processes you follow when designing?
I simply imagine what I want to wear and how I want to style it to change my mood. The garment then moulds into shape. 36 STYLE
Q A
How have your designs evolved over the years?
When I started designing, aged 27, I definitely dressed differently. Now, I cover up a bit more, wearing a more relaxed style of garment. With two young boys, my designs have changed to suit my lifestyle, which has meant more of a focus on easy to wear, comfortable clothing. It also has to wash easily as well!
Q
Name some of the highlights of your career to date.
A
Showcasing at the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival for three consecutive years and dressing Samantha Harris for the 2015 runway. Also winning the Designer for Tomorrow award at the 2014 WA Fashion Awards.
Q A
Are you influenced by any particular designers?
I try to avoid a lot of outside media influences but I must say Chanel and Rodarte are my alltime favourite labels.
Q
Is there a model or celebrity that you would particularly light to see wearing one of your creations?
A
Absolutely, it would have to be Suki Waterhouse. She is divine and so effortlessly chic.
Q A
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
I’d like to be continuing to run my Cottesloe flagship boutique, having opened a few more around Australia. My aim is to keep it small and controlled and not over-saturate the market but at the same time be accessible in the major Australian cities.

ording used as art, chevron patterned rugs, white kitchens, rose-gold and copper light pendants – forget them, they have all had their day. If you’re thinking of updating your home this year, take a look at the following inspirational ideas. Mixing up materials is a trend that works throughout all living spaces, adding interest and a touch of homeliness. As well as colours and textures, think about pairing new items with old, traditional with quirky. Iron and blackened steel have been more 44 HOME
commonly seen in the framework for furniture or out in the garden but now they are being used for kitchen flatware, doorknobs and bathroom fixtures. The metals look stunning alongside wood and glass. When it comes to eating, the trend has gone full circle and the formal dining room is making a big comeback. Rather than eating in an open plan space, it feels special to dine at a beautifully dressed table in a room set away from the chaos of everyday life. Embrace this trend for family meals or for more formal occasions. Fireplaces are on the increase too and are becoming the main focal point in a room instead of the TV. They

create a cosy, homely look particularly with sofas and chairs centred towards the hearth. Bathrooms are all about the spa feel. Rooms are being made to feel bigger with seats, a bench, plants and flowers so that the space feels calm and relaxing. Statement mirrors, rather than the usual rectangle, will feature hugely whether decorative or oversized. For accessories, the trend is to have globally sourced, functional items rather than the purely decorative look. Artisan products, such as rugs, bowls, stools and tables from Scandinavia, South America, Mongolia or Morocco, for example, have sought after unique forms and designs, and they are often made from a mix of materials too, which adds extra interest. Trending colours for interiors are leaning towards the pairing of Rose Quartz and Serenity, chosen as the Pantone colours of the year. The soft rose tone and
If there is one room in the house that needs an extra special bit of attention, then it has to be the kitchen. The space where family and friends congregate, it needs to feel special and homely as well as being well designed. So, if your kitchen needs an update, take inspiration from these on-trend ideas. Before getting stuck into bench tops and accessories, rethink the actual layout of the room. It’s no longer enough to have a kitchen that looks stylish; it has to work well too. Assess what kind of areas or ‘zones’ are needed to achieve the required lifestyle. For example, is a significant amount of storage required? If regularly entertaining, does the prep need to be hidden in a butler’s pantry or if using a variety of appliances, do they need to invisibly connect to power outlets or the internet? Writing this wish list down in black and white will help to direct design ideas and lead the way in planning how spaces and task lighting should be organised. Hugely popular currently are black sinks, tapware, appliances and accessories, such as fridges, ovens, dishwashers, and matte cutlery and dinnerware. The dark features give depth to a room and create a striking contrast against pale tones. It’s a strong and sophisticated look. In contrast, there is a big interest in soft pastel colours, especially blue and rose hues (again, inspired by the Pantone colours of the year). In partnership, these tones add warmth to the hard surfaces and monochrome palette typically found in kitchens. When it comes to choosing the design and layout of the cabinets and benchtops, bold and clean lines allow the use of the trending new look; mismatching. Play around with tones, colours, textures or even choose different styles and the kitchen will take on more depth and personality.

LOCAL EXPERTS Try to introduce tactile surfaces, such as a thin porcelain countertop, custom timber work wrapped around an island, geometric tiling in a small and otherwise unnoticed area, glass, and wooden panelling. The different textures can also help to create a modern café look, which is another growing kitchen fashion statement. To create a refined and boutique café– kitchen, add other robust elements, such as natural stone, concrete, reclaimed wood, and metal chairs and bar stools. And don’t be put off by extortionate price tags that often come with stone, marble and other materials. Investigate engineered materials, which can cost considerably less. Plus, for an interesting vista, consider installing an oversized, floor to ceiling window and let the ever changing artwork of outside add a café-style vibe. Finally, well-chosen artworks are a unique way to make the hub of the home even more special and personal. Add a gallery of favourite artworks or keep it simple with just one piece that will help provide the feature colour and inspire the rest of the kitchen’s palette. 46 HOME

hat is a Custom Integrator? Well, put simply, they can be just as important to a new home renovation design as an electrician or a plumber. For those that place a high value on the home entertainment system, be it for music, movies or TV or for those that want to secure the home with an effective alarm or camera system, talking to a CI before the start of the build is a must. Renovating is not just about knocking down walls, so while the hood is up on the home, why not apply some of the latest home automation mod cons by upgrading lighting, security, audio and video. Now available in Perth, Control 4 is the most sophisticated home automation system on the market. Plus, even more importantly, it is the only true retrofit option. Unlike other home automation systems that must be installed during the initial build, Control 4 is perfect for renovations, allowing cabled and wireless products to work seamlessly together. Upgrading lighting systems with an elegant, modern automated C4 light control in some cases is as simple as replacing an 48 HOME
existing light switch.By effectively adding a “brain” to the home, the system offers an advanced, easy-tooperate control network over the operating systems in the home. Why not upgrade to a custom fitted, concealed audio system? Listen to any source, at any level in any room and control it simply from one intuitive interface. Get rid of the mountain of remote controls by letting C4 work out all the inputs, outputs and connections. It’s simple. And, don’t forget to protect the new investment with an integrated security system. Want to find out more? Control 4 is now available through Mediatek and the team can offer a live demonstration of the system either at its offices or at homes locally. Call 9581 6035 for more information.

omeowners looking to freshen up the interior of their home or on the hunt for a one-off statement piece can take plenty of inspiration from an exciting new home furnishings showroom that has recently opened its doors in Como. Located on Labouchere Road, Melting Pot Studios is owned and operated by interior designer Meryl Carter, who opened the store after many successful years of designing and renovating homes both in Australia and overseas. A career in aviation first in the US and then in Australia with Bombardier was the catalyst for Meryl’s interest in interior design. Having renovated and decorated homes in the US alongside her day job, a chance opportunity to decorate the interior of a private jet led to a successful period of property development in Sydney. On returning to Perth, Meryl set up Meryl Carter Interior Designs and Home Renovations and it was then she stumbled upon the distinctive range of home furnishings from Melting Pot Studios. Regularly recommending the range to her clients, last August the opportunity arose to purchase the business and her dream of owning a stylish home furnishings store was to become a reality. Open Wednesday to Saturday from 10am and Sunday to Tuesday by appointment, discover a vast suite of products, including lamps, mirrors, wall art, sculptures and cabinets. There’s also a large selection of dining suites, chairs and tables. Designed in California, Chicago and New York, each piece is hand-made,
beautifully crafted and completely exclusive with no two pieces the same. Styles range from art deco and contemporary chic to Japanese Zen, American Hamptons style, European and more, and prices start from just $200 up to a maximum of $3500. Over the next few months, in addition to regular updates of stock, the showroom will also be adding a fabulous selection of contemporary, Europeandesigned recliner rockers, featuring exquisite wood and stainless steel finishes. The range of wall art, lamps and sculptures will also be updated with even more choice available. With so many special one-off pieces available in store, Melting Pot Studios is a tempting place to work. “The problem when you work in such a beautiful showroom is that you love everything,” says Meryl. “I find myself always wanting to take something home each night and I have to stop and say, ‘no’. I think my favourite piece at the moment is ‘Off to the Races’, which is a statue of a gorgeous lady wearing a big hat that lights up! I also love ‘City Park’, a wall art piece, which is striking. It reminds me of Melbourne with the rain, the trees and the people all dressed up. Wonderful!”
Melting Pot Studios can be found at Suite 2, Como 171 Building, 171 Labouchere Road, Como. Customers also have access to a choice of award-winning interior decorators. Available from $150 per hour, this fee can be deducted from any special item purchased in the Melting Pot range. HOME 53

winter HAIR CARE
P
roducts, treatments, good food - winter doesn’t have to mean the end of good-looking hair. Cold and windy winter days mixed with blasts of warm air from indoor heating systems can wreak havoc with hair. These conflicting conditions zap away moisture, leaving hair frizzy, full of static, dull and damaged. So with the harsh winter season here it’s essential to ensure a thorough and caring hair regime is in place. To combat dry winter hair, try to shampoo up to a maximum of three times a week. This will avoid hair being stripped of its natural oils, plus wet hair means extra time spent blow drying and heat styling, a process that further damages hair. Try using a dry shampoo or root lifter spray for those in between days and for particularly unruly bedhead hair, simply rinse a little conditioner through the ends. And try to keep the water at a moderate temperature as hot showers, as welcome as they are on a winter’s morning, remove even more moisture from hair and can even lead to a dry and itchy scalp. Always check the ingredients in products and try to opt for silicone-free where possible. Although silicone-based products can help hair feel smoother, over time they can also dry out hair so instead aim to use more oil based products. Talk to your hairdresser and consider switching up your usual shampoo and conditioner for richer alternatives. Also, ask them to recommend a mask for a oncea-week deep treatment suited to your hair type. There are products on the market that can even be massaged into the hair and scalp before bedtime. These help to repair damage overnight and can be washed out with shampoo in the morning. Before drying and styling hair, a heat protectant – spray, oil, serum, balm or cream - is essential. Without this protection, hair is weakened and depleted of its oils, which adds to the already drying effects of winter. Some products also protect against UV rays, which are just as prevalent in winter as in summer.

winter workout
M
otivating ourselves to exercise at this time of the year can be hard work. It’s not easy to get going on a winter’s morning with the wind howling and rain lashing down outside. Instead, the idea of cocooning ourselves inside with cups of tea and biscuits seems much more appealing! But before we know it, spring pops up, next we’re almost into summer and suddenly we are desperately trying to get our bodies back into shape for the long hot days on the beach. So, rather than feeling bloated through overindulging on comfort foods and sluggish through a lack of exercise, focus on feeling brighter and more energetic and start planning on how to get into shape in plenty of time for summer. How can we shake off our lethargy? The answer is that we need to kick start out metabolism. Our metabolism is the result of all the processes in our body working together to create the energy that keeps us going. When these processes occur, our bodies burn calories and produce energy. Our metabolic rate can be high, low or somewhere in the middle but generally it’s higher when we are younger. The higher the rate, the easier it is to lose weight but as we get older and our rate slows down, we are more susceptible to weight gain. In short, a higher metabolic rate not only means we are burning more calories, it also means we have more energy. It’s a win-win situation. Here are some great ways to boost the metabolism, lose body fat and discover boundless waves of energy:-
60 HEALTH & BEAUTY
EAT 5 OR 6 SMALL MEALS
Eating raises our metabolic rate. However, eating 2 or 3 large meals a day encourages the body to store extra calories as fat because it knows it will not have food again for a while. Eat 5 or 6 small portions every 2 or 3 hours.
ADD METABOLISM BOOSTERS TO YOUR DIET
Start the day with rolled oats, natural yoghurt or eggs. Then incorporate almonds and peanut butter (in limited amounts!), whole grains, berries, apples, vegetables (spinach is especially good), turkey, chicken breast, salmon, chilli, cayenne pepper, garlic, green tea, mustard and plenty of water.
DO CARDIOVASCULAR EXERCISE
This can be as easy as going for a walk; it will feel so much better than staying indoors. Every few minutes, move on to a jog for 1 or 2 minutes then back to a brisk walking pace again. This will work wonders for the body’s metabolic rate. Or, try running up some stairs and walking back down a few times.
DO RESISTANCE TRAINING
As well as defining body shape, resistance training increases muscle size, helping to burn more fat and calories even when we are not working out. For those who haven’t done resistance training before always ensure advice is sought from a qualified instructor for safer and longer lasting results.

As the winner of numerous business and industry awards, including three international awards of excellence within the last two years, the business has continued to move with the times. Recently, Le Beau has been slowly shifting from being a luxury day spa to offering more result-orientated treatments for its clients. This has involved extensive research into finding the very best medi-spa equipment and products to provide the very best results. “Ever since opening Le Beau, it has always been my goal to offer a personalised selection of groundbreaking treatments, services and products within a welcoming, luxurious and relaxing environment,” says 62 HEALTH & BEAUTY
owner Karen Briffa-Skewes. “Gone are the days when anti-ageing treatments were more about pampering than offering long lasting real results. Today’s clients want high-tech solutions, active ingredients and effective delivery systems that ensure real results with minimal down time.” With a range of market leading skincare products and clinical supplements and an expert, highly trained and qualified team of aestheticians, Le Beau’s staff are leaders in their field. We look for the right mix of innovation, efficiency and development of the technology. We research our equipment from six months up to three years to ensure we are purchasing machinery that delivers the best results in the safest possible way. Constantly working to maintain its successful mix of high-tech medical-grade skin and body treatments, Le Beau also maintains a holistic approach to beauty. “There’s much more to great looking skin than just good technology and skincare products. BMW 7 Series
Refinement personified
L
uxury, elegance and unbridled comfort; we all know what to expect from BMW’s flagship model. However, the launch of a new 7 Series has always been equally as much about the new and the unexpected. Over the years, this luxury sedan has been at the forefront of the very latest motoring technology, showcasing a number of new motoring firsts. ABS, onboard computers, Satnav and electric cruise control all first saw the light of day on the 7 Series before filtering down through the range. So what can buyers expect from the all new, sixth edition of the 7 Series? Well, as expected, plenty of new technology. In fact, according to BMW, the car comes with no less than
“... faultless build quality, improved driving dynamics, serious performance ...” 13 world-first technologies, the highlight of which is within the body-shell itself. Using a manufacturing technique initially developed on the i-Series models, the 7 Series features an extensive mix of carbonfibre reinforced plastic in the passenger cell of the car. Adding additional strength and at the same time reducing the weight of the car by approximately 130kg, the new found lightness of the chassis together with its adaptive dampers, which are now fitted as standard, have revolutionised the ride and handling of the car. It’s a sign that this new 7 Series has become more of a driver’s car, and this added agility will particularly suit buyers in Australia. Available in both standard and long wheel base mode, the 7-series has long been popular with buyers who employ chauffeurs, however, apparently Down Under, we prefer to get behind the wheel of our cars, and for those that do there’s plenty of fun to be had. Available with an extensively updated six-cylinder V8 engine paired with an eight-speed Steptronic 64 MOTORING
transmission, the entry level 730d is powered by a 3.0 litre, six-cylinder diesel engine producing 195kW and 620Nm of torque and achieving 0-100 km/h in just 6.1 seconds. The 740i and 740Li feature a 3.0 litre, sixcylinder petrol engine, generating 240kW and 450Nm whereas the 750i and 750Li come equipped with a 4.4 litre, V8 powerplant that delivers 330kW and 650Nm of torque, reaching 0-100 km/h in a decidedly swift 4.7 seconds. Luxurious touches and clever features abound on the new 7 Series and the car’s new smart key is another impressive addition. Fully chargeable and featuring an LCD display, the screen includes swipe functionality, flicking from one page to the next, alerting the driver to a range of notifications. It can even set the climate
controls to remotely heat or cool the car so that the cabin is at the perfect temperature before driving. New additional technology in the cabin includes a touch screen function on the iDrive operating system, a 3D sensor that allows for interaction through predefined hand movements and a removable 7-inch tablet computer integrated into the centre armrest or rear console to control comfort, infotainment and communications functions. Not surprisingly for a model of this stature and importance, the list of safety features on the 7 Series is long. Rear collision prevention, lane change warning, steering and lane control assist together with the standard Driving Assistant Plus are just some of the many features available. Adaptive LED headlights with
BMW Selective Beam are also fitted as standard on all models and on the 750i and 750Li, anti-dazzle laserlight technology that doubles the beam range from 300 to 600 metres is available for the first time since its world premiere on the BMW i8. With its faultless build quality, improved driving dynamics and serious performance, it’s hard not to be hugely impressed by the new 7 Series. One thing’s for sure, the luxury sedan market just got a whole lot more competitive. Lexus RX450h Head turning looks, heart stopping performance
A
vailable a little over twelve months after the successful launch of Lexus mid-sized SUV, the NX, the introduction of the new fourth generation RX has been an eagerly awaited and much anticipated event. Ever since its arrival on these shores over 10 years ago, the RX has struck a strong chord with Australian buyers with the luxury SUV accounting for almost 40% of all Lexus sales. Not surprising perhaps as it’s also the biggest selling Lexus in the Japanese car manufacturer’s history. No pressure, then! Now with three different models in the line-up, the RX200t, RX350 and RX450h, both the RX350 and top of the range RX450h are available in Luxury, F Sport or Sport Luxury modes. With a longer wheelbase, a more aggressive front grille and 20 inch alloys as standard, the new RX is larger, more spacious inside and with its distinctive front end and slim cat-like headlights it sports a striking look. Pitching itself more firmly in the large luxury SUV camp, the new RX is taking the likes of the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE and BMW X5 head on. The undoubted pick of the range is the RX450h and, much to our excitement, we got to take the RX450h Sports Luxury for a spin. This super-luxurious SUV with its sumptuous leather interior and bamboo-style interior trim builds on the ground breaking technology first seen a decade ago in the second generation RX400h. Back then, this was the world’s first hybrid luxury SUV and all variants in the new RX450 range come with Lexus Hybrid Drive (LHD) as standard. Combining a petrol engine and an electric motor, its 3.5 litre V6 delivers intoxicating performance coupled with impressive economy. Agile and nimble on the city roads, we, more than once, slipped it into Sports + mode

where its responsive throttle, thanks to the available torque on tap, allowed us to carve through the rushhour traffic. Delivering 193kW of power at 6000rpm and 335Nm at 4600rpm, there’s enough grunt to satisfy even the most fastidious of performance junkies. The RX brand has always been renowned for its luxurious touches and market-leading technologies and the new RX450h brings whole new levels of comfort. With its opulent cabin and whisper-quiet ride, it offers an incredibly refined driving experience and the large dash-mounted display screen, including satellite navigation and 360 degree cameras, and 15-speaker audio system all controlled by the trademark mouse-

style pad on the centre console further enhance the overriding feel of sophistication. The list of standard equipment is as long as the proverbial arm and highlights include a panoramic glass roof, heated and ventilated front seats, smart entry and start, powered boot with auto sensor and rain sensing wipers. The RX450h Sports Luxury also gets 14-way powered front seats with memory, heated rear seats and 60/40 folding rear seats. The list is, quite simply, endless! Safety features also abound and key features include the Pre-Collision Safety System, designed to protect occupants in the case of an accident, Active Cruise Control, which judges the speed and distance of other
vehicles on the road and adjusts speed accordingly, and Blind Spot Monitor to assist when changing lanes. BiLED headlamps automatically switch between high and low beam to aid night time visibility and LED daytime running lights ensure the car is easily seen by other road users. For an SUV that has consistently appealed to the most discerning of buyers, the all new RX has not only lived up to its lofty reputation, it has surpassed it. More luxurious and powerful than ever, the attention to detail and quality of build remain outstanding. Yet, despite all this, the Lexus RX still has a lower starting price than all of its major competitors listed above. Not only is it a dream to drive, it is seriously good value for money. t first glance, the Honda Accord Sport Hybrid embodies the iconic design of the original stylish sedan. But look closer and discover uniquely hybrid touches, such as blue accents highlighting the headlights and tail lights, plus 18 inch alloys and sunroof. A real eye-pleaser that proves the Japanese manufacturer can successfully challenge its European counterparts. With three ways to drive, the Sport Hybrid’s classleading Intelligent Multi-mode Drive (i-MMD) system maximises efficiency by switching between Electric, Hybrid and Engine drive modes. All the while, the Accord’s intuitive display tells you everything you need to know, including your own “eco score” to encourage efficient driving styles. When it comes to safety, Honda has it covered with a maximum 5-star ANCAP safety rating. The Accord Sport Hybrid shares many of the same features as the Accord V6L, including the Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS), Lanewatch cameras that show 4 times more than a normal mirror, and a multi-angle reverse camera. By now, you’re probably thinking that with all this safety and efficiency, the Accord must be a bore to drive but when they named it the Sport Hybrid, they weren’t fibbing. The

Coastal Boomer Urbane Projects With the convenience of a small shopping centre across the road and beachfront cafés over the hill, the backyard of this corner block in Cottesloe had long been earmarked as a downsizing opportunity for the baby-boomer owners. Featuring a wide north-facing frontage, architect Paul Burnham responded to the brief with a unique coastal home design encompassing a strong sixties vibe. The home’s minimalist exterior displays long, elegant lines of white rendered balconies, an off-form concrete carport and vertical ironbark cladding. The extensive use of full-height sliding doors has allowed the winter sun to fill the home with light as well as providing a connection with the street and the beach atmosphere. Efficient climate control was also a priority for the owners and this was achieved through passive solar design, cross-ventilation, underfloor heating and double-glazing throughout. The interior features large-format limestone floor tiles, recycled Oregon bench tops and a striking bespoke gas fire and canopy. The owners’ extensive art collection dominates the crisp white walls and casual comfortable furniture has completed the stylish yet laidback ambiance. Thrilled with the end result, the owners say, “Having your new home built in your very own backyard gives you the opportunity to be closely involved on a day to day basis. Working with Steve and his professional team was an absolute pleasure.” For further information on building with Urbane Projects, call 9329 9560 or go online at www.urbane.net.au LUXURY HOMES | PROPERTY 95

Burt Street, Fremantle Tallwood Constructions
As owner and Managing Director of Tallwood Constructions, and with over 30 years’ experience in the building and construction industry, Alex Campbell has seen his company receive numerous awards for building excellence throughout his career. He is also of the firm belief that the most successful and rewarding projects are those where there is a strong collaboration between all parties involved; client, architect and builder. When this relationship is based on respect, trust and has evident passion, the results can be as spectacularly evident as with this beautifully restored and extended home in Fremantle. The owners, Matt and Nancy, engaged local firm Gary Keen Design to design, draw, document and administer the project. “It is rare to work alongside an architect like Kris Keen, who is so fully engaged in a project,” says Alex. “Kris had a clear vision of every aspect of the building process and ensured that the very best was always achieved. It was also exceptional to work with a client who has such drive and technical ability.”

Original home Here’s what the owners had to say. “It would be fair to say that our home was built on instinct. That’s not to say that there wasn’t a lot of planning, precision, detail and hard work, because there was – a great deal. But first and foremost, it was built on gut feel and passion. Gut feel because from the very first minute of meeting Alex and his Tallwood team, our gut told us that these were the builders to use and this proved to be the right decision, time and time again. Passion because the energy and genuine desire to 98 PROPERTY | LUXURY HOMES
excel in delivering this project evidently matched ours from the outset and never wavered. In addition to this gut feeling and passion, we noticed an instinctive feel for building beautiful things, a work ethic rarely seen, total excellence and an ability to handle all those involved with tact and consideration without ever sacrificing our vision. In short, the result has been a journey that, thanks to all those involved and particularly Tallwood, we have loved. More importantly, the result has been our incredible home, which, as a living and breathing thing, reflects not only those within it but those that built it for us.”

The area is also set to benefit from the expanding infrastructure investment that is being made in the Murdoch precinct, a future hub of education and technology.” Located on Buckingham Crescent, Kardinya, the development is adjacent to North Lake Road and nearby South Street, providing easy access to Fremantle and the Perth CBD with the Kwinana freeway and Murdoch train station nearby. AV O I D I N G H O M E L O A N T R A P S Most borrowers will take on a home loan with the best intention of paying off the debt as quickly as possible. However, these best intentions can often be sabotaged by poor financial decisions made along the way. Here are some common traps to avoid:-
Failure to manage line of credit loans While a line of credit can have its benefits, a significant proportion of people who take these out end up getting into strife. Similar to having access to a giant credit card, a line of credit requires not only discipline but also a stable financial position. Usually attracting a higher interest rate and because regular payments are not actually obliged to be made, it’s very easy for those that spend freely to quickly start going backwards financially.
Consolidating short term debt long term Consolidating debt such as credit cards and car loans into a home loan is a popular strategy to ease short term cash flow problems. However, by rolling these debts into a home loan, borrowers are potentially stretching out these payments over the length of the home loan – a strategy that in the long run is going to cost considerably more in interest. Instead, consider having a split loan with the short term debt in the second loan
account. Then make it a priority to repay this loan with higher levels of repayments.
Focusing solely on the interest rate Whilst an important factor, there is far more to consider in a home loan than just the interest rate, particularly when refinancing. In most cases, when moving banks there will be costs involved and these costs can sometimes be forgotten about during the move. Ensure you work with a reputable broker who will look at the structuring and features of the new loan as well as the headline rate in order to find the most suitable fit.
Paying interest only for the life of the loan For those who want repayment flexibility, an interest only loan can be an effective strategy. This can often be the case for investors looking to quickly build up a portfolio of investment properties. However, at some stage it’s prudent to start paying down both principal and interest to help build up equity. For those who just make interest only payments, at some point the property is going to have to be sold to pay out the debt. Instead, a good strategy is to try to pay out the loan before retirement so the benefits of rental income can be enjoyed.

Did You Know?
The City of Mandurah covers an area of 173.5km² and extends from Madora Bay and Lakelands in the north to Herron and Lake Clifton in the south. The first people to inhabit the area were the Bindjareb tribe of the Bibbulmun Nation. Known as Mandjoogoordap, which translates to ‘meeting place of the heart’, the name of the locality was adapted to Mandurah after European settlement.
In 1828, Englishman Thomas Peel was inspired to bring a group of workmen, equipment and stores to Western Australia in exchange for a grant of land. The terms of the grant were that he should arrive no later than 1st November, 1829, but by arriving in December, the original land grant was forfeited. Undeterred, Peel built a small settlement named Clarence at what is today known as Woodman Point. Facing problems with his health and with the settlement, Peel led the remaining settlers to Mandurah before his death in 1865. Mandurah then continued to grow at a slow pace up to the start of the twentieth century. The construction of the Mandurah Traffic Bridge in 1894 and the laying of bitumen on the road between Perth and Mandurah contributed to a rise in settlement and visitor numbers to the area but it wasn’t until the industrial development of Kwinana in the 1950’s and the mining boom in Jarrahdale and Wagerup in the 1960’s that the area began to expand rapidly. Continued tourist growth, the formation of the Shire of Mandurah, followed by the Town of Mandurah in 1987 and the City of Mandurah in 1990, established the area as one of the fastest growing regions in Australia. 106 GETAWAY TO ... hether you are a serious lower figure handicapper or just enjoy the odd round with a few mates, there is no shortage of choice in and around Mandurah. Blessed with a mix of award-wining international standard championship courses and friendly local clubs, there really is something for everyone. The Cut opened its doors in 2005 and offers a true links layout. Designed by James Wilcher, the course offers immaculate playing surfaces with lush fairways and beautifully manicured greens with multiple teeing positions allowing players of all ability to truly test their game. It is a challenging course with strong ocean winds; successful players are those that keep the flight of the ball a touch lower and out of the punishing dune vegetation. With stunning views of the rugged coastline, the outward nine heads east to the Port Bouvard Cut before leading up to the modern clubhouse whilst the inward nine is full of some of the most spectacular holes in WA golf. Regularly ranked as one of the top

Australian courses, it is consistently placed within the top three Western Australia courses in the Golf Digest Top 100 Course rankings. Designed by world renowned course designer Robert Trent Jones Jnr, Meadow Springs Golf and Country Club proudly boasts a saying that it provides golf ‘as nature intended’. Offering a picturesque setting within open bushland, the par 72, 6118 metre course offers a test for players of all levels and is well known for its high level of playability. Winding its way through beautiful natural terrain, the course is flagged by towering 200 year old Tuart trees whilst offering generous fairways and subtle rolling greens. Few of the holes run parallel and this leads to a feel of serenity and seclusion once on the course. With water not a strong feature, exquisitely sculptured bunkers define many of the greens, meaning accurate approach play is often vital. The signature hole is the 15th, a sweeping par five of 484 metres playing from an elevated tee that provides a stunning vista of the course and its surrounds. Meadow Springs is

Situated in the beachside suburb of the same name and a quick 10 minute drive from Mandurah, Secret Harbour Golf Links boasts 18 superbly designed holes set against the panoramic setting of the Indian Ocean. Another local links course, the experience here is more of a traditional Scottish links course with small pot bunkers and rolling fairways amid the natural sand dunes and wonderful ocean views. Designed by golf architect and player Graham Marsh, this is a course that provides a challenge to the professional and an enjoyable experience for the average golfer with several tee positions available depending on wind conditions. With both water and bunkers in play on many of the holes, the course rewards good course management and a thoughtful approach to each hole. The signature 114 GETAWAY TO ... MANDURAH
hole for many is the par 4, 17th, where a wide fairway is littered with pot bunkers before coming to an abrupt halt at a lake. Over the lake sits a small two-tier green, again, surrounded by bunkers with bushland behind. Distance control is essential here. Nestled between the Indian Ocean and the Peel Estuary in Halls Head, Mandurah Country Club consists of professionally designed fully grassed fairways and superb grass greens. The fairways are lined with many varieties of natural flora and majestic eucalypts. Open to the public, this is an 18-hole, par 72 course, 6142 metres in length. Situated next to Pinjarra Road, Pinjarra Golf Club is about a 10 minute drive from Mandurah. The course is an 18-hole par 73, 6185 metres in length.

My Favourite Dish
BUNNY CHOW
By Pyaar Hannooman, Two Rubens Espresso, Fremantle
often referred to as A ‘bunny’, Bunny Chow is a South African fast food dish consisting of a hollowed out loaf of bread filled with curry. Originating in Durban’s Indian community, its creation is thought to date back to the 1940’s, a time when many Indian migrant workers arrived in South Africa. A popular theory behind the origins of the Bunny Chow is that migrants working on the sugar cane plantations of Kwazulu-Natal required a way of carrying their lunches to the field and a hollowed out loaf of bread was a convenient way to transport their vegetarian curries. The stories behind how the dish got its name are varied but I have heard more than once that Indian merchants used to sell this meal under a Banyan, or ‘Bania’ tree. This lead to the dish becoming known as a Bania Chow before eventually being shortened to Bunny Chow. So remember, if you go to South Africa and a group invites you to grab some bunnies for lunch, don’t worry, they are actually inviting you to taste this popular and delicious Indian curry dish! Originally, the dish was vegetarian but meat dishes soon became commonplace. Today Lamb, Beef and
Chicken Bunny Chows are all popular variations along with a Beans Bunny Chow served with beans and potatoes in the dish’s trademark rich tomato sauce. Our delicious Lamb Bunny Chow is served with a tasty sambal side dish, featuring onions, tomatoes, chilli and coriander. Available as a quarter, half or full loaf, one of the dish’s key characteristics is created when gravy from the filling soaks into the walls of the bread. Using your hand to break a piece of curry soaked bread to mop up the filling is considered as the only way to truly enjoy a Bunny Chow and sharing a single Bunny Chow is a highly popular way to enjoy the dish.

Restaurant Review
DIVINE INDIAN RESTAURANT AT SOUTH OF THE RIVER MAGAZINE, we are particularly partial to some fine Indian cuisine so when the chance arose to visit Divine Indian Restaurant (formerly Maharaja Indian Restaurant and under the same management), we certainly didn’t need a second invitation. Located in Kearns Crescent in attractive terracottacoloured premises, on arriving for dinner we were immediately struck by the attractive interior and impeccably laid out white cloth-clad tables. With its neutral colours and soft contemporary lighting set against a striking black and white tiled floor, the décor and presentation is an impressive part of the dining experience at Divine. So, was the food able to match the flawless surroundings? Ordering a bottle of Shiraz from Yallingup winery
Deep Woods Estate, we began by perusing the list of entrées. Tempted by the Indian Platter, we eventually chose Fish Amritsari, Prawn Pakoras and the classic Indian starter Onion Bhaji. All of these starters proved to be an excellent choice but the standouts were the two fish dishes. The Fish Amritsari, a dish that originates from north-west India, is a combination of boneless fish pieces, marinated in spices and then deep-fried. Incredibly tasty, the combination of ginger and garlic, turmeric and vinegar was quite delicious. The Prawn Pakoras were also exceptional. Marinated in spices and also deep-fried, the tail-on prawns were full of flavour and generous in size. Next, it was time for the mains and with a huge selection of seafood, lamb, chicken and beef dishes to choose from, not forgetting the restaurant’s special Goat Curry, this was not an easy decision to make. In the end, we went for the Chicken Madras and Lamb Rogan Josh both served with Garlic Naan and Zeera Pulao, a fried rice dish cooked with cumin seeds and spices. Again, we were more than happy with our decision. The Chicken Madras with its succulent chicken breasts cooked in an onion and tomato sauce with fresh coriander and green spices offered just the right amount of heat to satisfy the tastebuds. One of Kashmiri cuisine’s signature dishes is their Lamb Rogan Josh, a dish that should always deliver strong, aromatic flavours, and our dish was no exception to the rule. This medium-spiced dish, a curry that specialises in cooking the meat in clarified butter at intense heat, was fabulous and its combination of spices was to be truly savoured. A thoroughly enjoyable evening, the delicious food was more than matched by the restaurant staff ’s exemplary service and attention to detail. Fine Indian cuisine at its very best, Divine comes highly recommended. We shall certainly be back.

PEKO PEKO WITH WELL-ESTABLISHED STORES north of the river in Doubleview and down south in Dunsborough, Peko Peko may already be a familiar name to some but, with the opening of its Attadale eatery, a daily dose of its freshly made takeaway food is now just a short drive away. Specialising in delicious authentic sushi and Asianinfluenced cuisine using only the finest and freshest of ingredients, a visit to Peko Peko is always a treat. Fresh is an over-used word when it comes to food-related marketing hype but here you can taste the freshness of the food in every mouthful. Sushi is actually made not once but twice a day so you can always be assured that you will be eating something that has literally just been created. We popped in for a lunchtime bite and began by sampling the selection of fabulous miso soups. Available in three different flavours, Salmon and Pumpkin, Chicken and Tomato and Moroccan Lentil, these make for a great starter or healthy lunchtime snack. Quite delicious! Next on the menu for us was a gluten-free Seared Salmon and Avocado rice paper roll. Low in carbs and high in nutrients, these light and flavoursome rolls
are best enjoyed with one of Peko Peko’s tasty dipping sauces. Miso ginger was our flavour of choice. Again, excellent! We, of course, had to try some sushi and the Teriyaki Chicken with Avocado, the restaurant’s most popular option, was an immediate choice. Served with turmeric rice instead of the standard white rice, this new added rice option that’s available with all sushi rolls provided an extra depth of flavour as well as a unique twist to a favourite dish. There’s also a healthy brown rice option for all sushi rolls. To finish with, we tucked into a quite superb Chicken Teriyaki dish. One of a selection of fresh teriyaki meals now available over the winter months, these more substantial offerings are also available with beef, salmon or tofu. Served with wok-tossed vegetables on a bed of turmeric rice, the meals are sure to be a hit with both lunchtime and evening diners along with the hot wok noodle dishes served with beef, chicken, prawns or tofu. Perfect for winter dining, the noodle dishes are served with a choice of sauces. Serving deliciously fresh food prepared by highly qualified chefs, Peko Peko is truly a unique takeaway experience. Owners Samantha and Troy Bottegal have designed their latest store to offer health-conscious customers access to high quality cuisine, combining both speed and quality of service. Offering an extensive range of lunch and dinner options, together with a catering service serving a fantastic array of platters, the Attadale store is open 7 days for lunch and dinner.

Winter Recipe
Chicken and Chorizo Casserole
A hearty casserole – surely everyone’s idea of perfect, home-cooked comfort food! This recipe uses the Spanish sausage chorizo, which, with its earthy robust spiciness, takes the dish to a whole new level of deliciousness. Serves 4-6
Ingredients 200g chorizo, sliced
250ml white wine
1 red onion, chopped
600ml chicken stock
1 whole chicken, jointed
2 tbsp tomato purée
400g new potatoes, halved 2 tbsp chopped parsley 1 punnet cherry tomatoes ground black pepper
Method
Place the chorizo in a large flameproof casserole dish and fry, without oil, over a medium heat. Turn the chorizo pieces over once and fry until they start to crisp and its oil is released. Remove from the dish. Add the onion and fry gently in the chorizo oil for 5 minutes until it softens. Add the chicken and stir to coat it in the oily onion mixture. Brown the chicken on all sides. Return the chorizo to the dish and add the potatoes and tomatoes. Stir in the white wine, stock, tomato purée, parsley, and black pepper. Bring the liquid to the boil and then place the lid on top. Reduce the heat to its lowest. Cook for 45 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through and the potatoes are tender.

HANGOUT ON 20 PRESTON LOCATED IN THE HEART OF COMO, Hangout on 20 Preston has always been a popular destination for foodies and coffee lovers of all persuasions. Doubling as a café by day and restaurant and bar by night, whether it’s a big breakfast, light lunch or dinner à la carte, it’s an ideal spot to either start or end the day. Featuring a spacious alfresco area and welcoming interior complete with a cosy, open fire means it can be enjoyed all year round too. With a strong focus on modern Australian cuisine, the menu has recently evolved to include a number of Asian-inspired dishes. And if that wasn’t enough to get us drooling, the team has just opened Jersey Jack, a Gelato Bar and Dessert Parlour right next door. Definitely time to pay a visit. Dining out on a decidedly chilli autumn evening, the thought of some warming spicy offerings was an appealing prospect. With a number of tempting plates to choose from we decided to order a selection from the recently added dishes. A far from easy choice, we can tell you. So, after a tasty snack of Chilli-Infused Snow Peas,
we began with Shredded Duck served with a Hoisin sauce in a bao bun. This soft, smooth and steamed bread bun is a great way to enjoy all manner of slow cooked meats and the combination of Asian pickled cabbage, coriander and chilli was most agreeable. Next, we ordered a Seafood Laksa, a real favourite of the evening. Served with calamari, mussels and prawns, this spicy noodle soup was bursting with flavour and certainly carried a punch. Yes, it was spicy but not to the extent of masking the piquancy of the meal. Highly satisfying, this was a standout for us. In keeping with the seafood theme, our next dish was Chilli Assam Fish served on a bed of moist saffron rice. Again, the sounds of satisfied diners filled the air as we tucked into this delicious seafood offering. Served with a tangy tamarind sauce, this was the perfect match for the chunky flakes of white fish. Finally, perhaps the highlight of the night, Singapore-Style Chilli Crab. The soft shell crab arrived with not one but two good size pieces of crab and was again served with a boa bun, ideal for soaking up the delicious sauce. Perfectly presented, the crab meat was exquisitely cooked and, being competitively priced at under $30, we see no reason why this wouldn’t become a signature dish for the restaurant. Make a beeline on the menu for this; it’s also a perfect dish for sharing. Just time then to pop next door and sample a few gelatos. Impossible to pick a favourite but, wow, that Cookies and Cream Gelato was something else! What a great way to round off a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
