ne thing our eagle-eyed readers should have noticed by now in the pages of the first three editions of South of the River is that when it comes to a reader competition we believe in pulling out the stops.

Each spiritually empowering painting draws upon a rich and intrinsic tapestry of traditional cultures and customs that date back many thousands of years, well before Australia was populated by the white man.

SUE KALAB SPECIALISING IN

watercolours depicting Australian nature, Bunbury artist Sue Kalab began her professional art career in 1981 after moving to the Croajingolong National Park in Mallacoota, Victoria.

Here, she took inspiration from the natural beauty of the area, observing nesting birds, wild flowers and pods of dolphins, her work being a response to the power of natural images found during bush walks and beach wanders. After moving back to WA, Sue lived and worked in an Aboriginal community in the Pilbara before moving to Bunbury in 1995 where she established her beachside studio.

Her style of work has been described by Perth arts writer Julie Prott as “cultivated rusticity” while art critic Judith McGrath suggests the viewer “lingers and takes the time to engage with these powerful works of gentle 26 ART & EVENTS | GALLERY SHOWCASE

beauty.” Others comment about its timelessness and meditative qualities whereas Sue herself describes her work as soft realism. “My work endeavours to portray the peaceful and serene qualities one finds in nature – the timelessness, the sense of perpetuity, and nature’s unobtrusiveness. I see great loveliness in the things I choose to paint, and I try to touch a deep part of people’s nature.”

WINTER WARMERS Feminine colours, soft fabrics and the essential statement piece The latest fashion trends from South of the River’s resident fashion expert.

Winter has arrived and now is the time to envelop ourselves in warm knits, experiment with a new colour palette or select our hero piece of the season. Will it be a new coat? A metallic skirt? A treat in velvet? Over the knee boots?

Let’s start with comfort: knitwear.

Soft woollen blends, cashmere and mohair in oversized cuts and layered with skinny pieces underneath are what winter dressing for comfort is all about. Or try a figure-hugging, soft fine knit for the on-trend off-the-shoulder look with options for peek-a-boo shoulder cut-outs or an asymmetric design. Add a midi skirt, tapered or skinny pants. Offthe- shoulder, oversized slouchy pieces look great too especially when layered over a fine knit and paired with skinny jeans.

by Adriano and Rita Scagnetti and since relocating to Australia, the couple’s two sons Vairo and Tayron have both been following in the footsteps of their parents in the jewellery trade.

Vairo is a certified designer within the Gemmological Association of Australia whereas brother Tayron has become one of Australia’s most successful jewellers through his association with WorldSkills, the nation’s leading event for showcasing trades and skills through regional and national competitions.

In 2013, Tayron won the gold medal for jewellery manufacturing at WorldSkills Australia and was selected to represent his country in the world event held later that year in Germany. He then undertook a period of extensive training alongside a number of notable 36 STYLE

industry mentors in the lead-up to the international competition in Leipzig which attracted 16 jewellery manufacturing entrants.

All entrants were required to manufacture specific components each day for three days during the competition before being asked to assemble the pieces into a finished piece on day four. The result was a silver medal for Tayron and significant publicity for both himself and the family business.

An impressive performance for someone who only started tinkering with jewellery as a young teenager and didn’t get serious about his craft until aged sixteen.

With a particular interest in creating one-off rings and working with platinum, Tayron describes his style as a mix of classic and modern influences.

Double ovens are being replaced by steam ovens and convection ovens for baking and roasting. wenty-seven years since the release of the Series 1 in the UK, the Land Rover Discovery remains one of the world’s most recognisable SUVs. And, almost 3 decades on, with over a million units sold worldwide, our love affair with the ‘Disco’, seems to show no sign of abating with the release of the fifth generation model.

Part of the appeal of the Land Rover Discovery has always been the fact that you kind of always know what you get with a Discovery. Its look hasn’t really changed that much since the late 80’s and although subsequent models have introduced plenty of technology over the years, it is a car that often appeals to the traditionalist.

However, the all-new Discovery seems to be making a bold and concerted effort to shake off that slightly conservative tag. 430Nm of torque, to deliver the Discovery’s customary towing power, the Td4 powers from 0-100 km/h in 10.5 seconds. Volume seller continues sporting heritage

he launch of the XE sedan was a big deal for Jaguar. A crucial part of its strategy to up its worldwide production volumes and compete head-on with its German counterparts in the prestige sedan market, it might be said that, at the time, the very survival of the brand was at stake.

Jaguar certainly didn’t shy away from a fight.

For decades, the BMW 3-Series, along with Audi, Mercedes-Benz and, to a lesser extent, Lexus, had ruled the roost in this hugely lucrative sector with a succession of extremely successful models. However, Jaguar has always been up for a scrap and has also had a knack of capturing our attention when it matters.

Taking its cues from the same design ethics introduced on the Jaguar XF almost a decade before it, the Jaguar legacy was there for all to see. Its stunning shape and sweeping lines combined the brand’s distinctive large grille with a long bonnet and elegant headlights. Not just a pretty face, though, its sensuous curves and completely flat underfloor were responsible for producing a mightily impressive drag coefficient of just 0.26. With a mix of rear-wheel drive, 8-speed automatic petrol and diesel engines to choose from, the diesel option available on the Prestige and R-Sport is a punchy 2.0L 4-cylinder power plant delivering 132kW of power and a maximum 430Nm of torque. With a top speed of 228km/h it accelerates smoothly and purposefully from 0-100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds. Three petrol variants complete the line-up, starting with the 2.0L

4-cylinder 147kW, next a 2.0L 4-cylinder 177kW and finally, available on the XE S only, a ferocious 3.0L V6 250kW. The same engine used in the F-Type coupĂŠ, this supercharged 335bhp beast achieves a top speed of 250 km/h and roars from 0-100 km/h in a touch over 5 seconds.

Other new features of note include Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS), available for the first time on a Jaguar, and a brand new infotainment system, InControl, based around an 8.0 inch touchscreen and overflowing with a raft of new features and applications, including remote start from the driver’s smartphone. expected, inside the cabin, luxury abounds with plenty of leather, a twin-stitched dash and attractive brushed metal paddle-shifters on the steering wheel.

Heatherbell Urbane Projects

This 1920’s built cottage, which originally included a sleep out, was completely renovated to include four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a gym, a new kitchen, living area and 3-car undercroft garage.

Strict design guidelines were enforced by the local council, which required the Federation architecture to be maintained without an enclosed garage. Excavation was, therefore, carried out for an undercroft garage to the right of the house that required complex civil works.

The sinking of the garage not only met the council’s requirements but also allowed for a master suite to be extended across in the original federation style to essentially double the frontage. This, in turn, allowed for the new contemporary architecture, comprising of the kitchen, living area, gym and alfresco, to be hidden from the street. extension uses elements that both mirror and contrast the original home.

The attention to detail didn’t stop with just the bricks and mortar. hould my home loan repayments be principle and interest or interest-only? It’s a common question that my clients seek the answer to. It does, of course, depend on individual circumstances but let’s take a more general look at this.

Firstly, let’s cover off an important piece of the puzzle.

Who and what is the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA)?

APRA supervises Australia’s banks, building societies and credit unions (authorised deposit-taking institutions), life and general insurance companies, friendly societies and superannuation funds (excluding self-managed funds). It promotes financial stability by requiring these institutions to manage risk prudently to minimise the likelihood of financial losses to depositors, policy holders and superannuation fund members.

Through its supervision, APRA’s aim is to identify potential weaknesses in its regulated institutions as early as possible. It follows a risk-based approach under which institutions facing greater risks receive closer supervision.

So why is this important in the discussion about what’s happening with interest rates?

Recently APRA imposed limits on financial institutions on two fronts in relation to the lender’s loan book. Firstly, to manage the amount of investment lending in order to remain under the 10% growth benchmark, and, secondly to limit the amount of interest-only lending it provides to consumers.

So how is this playing out for the consumer?

For those that have an investment loan or an interestonly home loan, many will have noticed that interest rates may have increased several times over the last six to twelve months irrespective of the fact that the RBA has left the cash rate on hold at 1.5 per cent since August 2016. This is due to the way lenders are managing the pressure from APRA. The reality is that this is now widespread practice and is most likely going to continue. One way this can be avoided is to consider either switching into a fixed rate, especially if the loan is for investment purposes as this will provide some budget certainty for the investment, or looking at a principle and interest loan rather than interest-only, or a combination of both.

We have also now had the release of the recent federal budget to contend with. The levy imposed on banks will most likely be passed onto consumers with either an increase in fees or interest rates.

Due to all the factors above, it is now more important than ever to seek independent advice from a licenced finance broker who can assist in making appropriate decisions for individual circumstances. Not all lenders are treating investment and interest-only lending in the same way, so it might be possible to make significant improvements by seeking advice soon.

B y r ay m o n d ta n t can’t be taken with you but what you leave behind may inflict conflict and heartache on the ones you love.

The saying goes that there is nothing more certain in life than death and taxes and, of course, none of us know when our time will be up. When Steve Irwin died, the number of queries on estate planning rose substantially at my firm. Abraham Lincoln, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, John Denver and Pablo Picasso are just some of the celebrities who died without wills. Can you imagine the fight over these estates?

If there is no will or no valid will in place, legal issues may arise for the beneficiaries. If you die without a will, all money and possessions (the estate) will be distributed according to strict legal rules and regulations. These rules are called the laws of intestacy and, in many cases, these laws distribute an estate in a way the deceased would not have wanted, sometimes with disastrous results.

Anyone whose circumstances have changed, through marriage, the birth of children, divorce, remarriage or the death of a close relative, should make a new will.

Once married, any previous will made is generally revoked.

So what should you do? Should you rush in to see a lawyer and get one done immediately? No, first, it’s important to consider the following questions.

Who will be my trustee? This is a person trusted to manage the estate. He or she will be able to sell properties and deal with your money. The trustee should be financially savvy and trustworthy.

Who will look after my children?

Here are our ten good reasons as to why everyone should have a will:1. A will lessens the pain felt by loved ones at the most difficult time.

2. The guardianship of young children who survive can be made known instead of having relatives argue as to who takes care of them.

3. A will prevents bitter family battles. This is especially important if there has been a second marriage. Having one family fight over the assets is bad enough. Can you imagine two families squabbling?

4. A will simplifies the legal process. The process of unfreezing the deceased’s estate can be complicated and costly.

5. A will should name who gets the estate’s assets. If beneficiaries are not named, the law has a fixed formula for distribution of assets. That formula may not be as per your intentions.

6. A will prevents confusion. Let your family know what your wishes are. Do you wish to be cremated and have your ashes scattered to the four corners of the wind?

7. A will helps the family business. Upon death, all assets of the deceased are frozen. The business may have a vacuum in management that ultimately leads to the business operating at a loss and, ultimately, financial hardship for the family.

8. A will minimises the legal costs of settling the deceased’s estate.

Who do I leave my properties to? Where do these assets go? How do I distribute them? Does that son who never visits me get anything?

Estate Planning To cut a long story short…

We acted for a mother whose son had died in a car accident. The driver of the car was the son’s girlfriend.

No-one knew how long the son and this girlfriend had been dating or whether they were in a de-facto relationship.

The son did not have a will and left properties jointly owned with his mother in both of their names.

Immediately after the funeral, the girlfriend claimed she was in a de-facto relationship with the son. Under the Administration Act 1903, a de-facto partner is entitled to a substantial portion of the estate.

Can you imagine the angst of the mother in having to deal with the girlfriend’s claim? The mother’s words to me were, “She killed my son, and now she is coming after our properties!”

The problem here was that there was no will and there was no way anyone could ascertain whether the girlfriend could prove the de-facto relationship was genuine. The mother had to swallow a bitter pill and settle the matter out of court. Lesson to be taken: Make sure you have a will.

Too many times clients tell us about the problems experienced with software. Data has had to be entered twice. It has had to be upgraded every month. Large sums of money have been spent on a system only to find that the reporting functions promised will only collate the data, in other words, the reports have had to be created by themselves. Plus, not only was too much time spent, it was wasted on multiple systems. ormones can be delightful substances that give us energy and vitality. They can make us feel like a rock star, however, when not in balance, they can make us feel terrible.

Hormones have a powerful effect on how we feel, function and look, impacting on everything from

energy levels, quality of sleep, skin health, fertility and weight management. They can also influence moods, whether that might be feeling anxious, calm, withdrawn or angry, along with the food choices we make and the way we speak to ourselves and our loved ones. Avoid starving yourself. This will only increase the fat stored in the body and can lead to binge eating. If you are thinking of food too often this could be due to a low blood sugar level, dehydration, a nutrient deficiency or simply because you haven’t eaten enough.

This calorie measurement is found to be the absolute minimum calorie intake to achieve weight-loss without causing nutritional deficiencies. This measurement ensures energy levels remain high and that the metabolism doesn’t slow too much. Note, this is the minimum.

If active, increase the calorie intake so that the body has enough energy to function correctly.

Try to eat your largest meal at the start of the day when your body needs the energy most. As the day progresses, decrease the size of the portions and the amount of carbohydrates consumed.

oused in the historic Princess May Building in central Fremantle, home to Princess May Girls’ School until 1956, Fremantle Education Centre is a notfor-profit organisation established by the Commonwealth Government in 1974 in response to the 1973 Karmel Report. The report recommended the setting up of a number of national education centres to improve the quality of teaching in schooling and general skills training development for the broader

youth and professional development and support for educators and schools.

As time has gone on, the organisation has evolved and expanded into new areas of training. In the 1990’s, it diversified into running a range of international training programmes as well as fulfilling Government contracts for the ‘Work for the Dole’ programme and, in 2002, it was established as a nationally recognised training provider.

Seven years later in 2009, FEC won a $1.5m grant from the Federal Government to renovate the ground floor of the Princess May Building, which allowed it to significantly expand its range of services as a Registered Training Provider (RTO). It then commenced its vocational education and training (VET) in-school training programmes, providing accredited in-job training and technical skills. This part of its business has seen significant growth particularly in recent years with 2016 seeing a growth rate of 85 per cent and 2017, 53 per cent. FEC now provides training for 70 schools in an area from Joondalup to Bunbury.

In addition, the organisation provides fee-forservice accredited training for the wider community. A

range of programmes, funded by the WA Department of Training and Workplace Development Future Skills Initiative, are tailored to offer qualifications to disadvantaged groups within the community, such as people from a culturally and linguistically diverse background, the unemployed and youth at risk groups.

Further to that, a number of short courses are available, including basic computing, returning to work and woman in supervision.

The extraordinary success of FEC has made the organisation an employer of choice, employing highly skilled staff and lecturers using the very latest teaching methods. The winner of a number of different awards with the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce in recent years, it’s all female staff now boasts 27 full and part time employees as well as almost a thousand registered students.

THE READING RACE

F

By Louise Clark or me, going to primary school was all about having fun and playing with my friends. I don’t remember any pressure to read better than my peers and wasn’t bothered by who was reading which level of books.

It’s a different story today. As a former primary and secondary school teacher, and now that I have my own young children, I have seen that from very early on in their school life, children can feel quite inadequate with their reading ability if they are not progressing at the same speed at their peers.

This feeling of underachieving is, of course, completely unfounded. We all know that, unless there really is a problem that demands help and support, children all learn to read during their early years at school. Unfortunately, though, due to these pressures, some children start to ‘place’ themselves in the class and label themselves as slow if they don’t ‘get’ reading as quickly as others. This can cause frustration and issues with confidence in areas of their personal and school life as well as lowering their own general expectations.

So why is this happening? My belief is that it is partly because our education system is more transparent.

This is, obviously, a good thing as we want and require to know exactly what is being taught to our children, when it is being taught, and how it is being delivered and assessed. Our children too know what they are

expected to achieve and this is vital in order for them to take more ownership of, and have more independence in, their learning.

However, now that we are all armed with this information, it is not only us who expect our children to go through school proficiently, achieving all the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding, and thereby ticking off all the boxes in the correct order.

Our children expect this too.

We need to take the pressure off ourselves and our children and let them know that learning to read is not a race. Let’s focus instead on the enjoyment of reading to and with our children. Whoever learns to read first is not necessarily the cleverest or most able child.

While one child may have succeeded in reading their first chapter book, another may have used spectacular spatial awareness in their construction work, managed to count back in 5’s from 100 or displayed amazing social skills by making up new games to play at recess.

Let’s remind ourselves and remind our children that we are all different, and we all find our own successes in our own way, in the end.

market eating house Cooking up a storm in the south west included in the 2016 Gourmet Traveller Top 10 Regional WA Restaurants and featured in the Australian Financial Review Top 500 Restaurants in Australia, Bunbury-based Market Eating House has been making quite a name for itself.

Owned and operated by husband and wife team Brenton and Bec Pyke, Brenton, having grown up in Bunbury, first met Bec while part of the launch team for Anduluz Bar and Tapas, one of Perth’s first small bars. From there, Brenton was recruited to be Head Chef of the relaunch of one of George Calombaris’ (of MasterChef) restaurants, The Little Press. Whilst in Melbourne, the duo gained a wealth of knowledge and experience working with some of the industry’s leading figures, which included a time for Bec working at award-winning chef Andrew McConnell’s Cumulus Inc. On returning to Perth, Brenton and Bec managed Habitué in North Fremantle before starting their search for their own restaurant. After looking at potential venues in Perth for over a year, the appeal of Bunbury, Brenton’s childhood home, won them over and Market Eating House opened in late 2015.

“We could see a major gap in the market for the style of restaurant that we hoped to create, something that was welcoming and accessible and would allow our values and way of life to be known through our food, service and hospitality. Something with which we could deliver an experience that reminds customers of why it’s called the hospitality industry in the first place,” says Bec. During the planning process, the pair discovered that they were expecting their first child and the decision to move to Bunbury, where the pair would be closer to family, was solidified. Next there followed a busy handson renovation of a series of offices on Victoria Street to turn the existing building into a new restaurant.

“Four months of blood, sweat and tears culminated in a completion date that happened to coincide with my

due date and we ended up opening the restaurant two weeks after the birth of our gorgeous baby boy,” says Bec. With a custom made charcoal grill and wood fired oven taking centre stage in the kitchen, the open plan floor space, stylish bar and rustic vibe has created a distinctive charm at Market Eating House. The focus is on sharing-style dishes, and the menu is strongly influenced by the seasons, showcasing the depth and quality of local produce.

“Exploring one of the most honest relationships, that of food and fire, our dishes are prepared with the idea that the ingredients maintain their integrity and will be best enjoyed sharing style, the way we eat at home, with our closest family and friends,” says Bec. EAST FREMANTLE YACHT CLUB FOR OVER EIGHTY YEARS, East Fremantle Yacht Club has been entwined with Perth’s proud sailing heritage.

However, much as we all love our oysters at South of the River magazine, on this particular visit we were here to try something a bit different. Catering for all tastes, not just oyster aficionados, Oyster Bar Mandurah offers

plenty of choice for those not enamoured with the little molluscs and its Temptations menu is proving equally as popular.

The mouth-watering line-up of dishes on this menu certainly provided a tough choice for our lunchtime visit. Featuring a selection of smaller entrées, platters (Seafood and Antipasto) and fabulous salads, there’s also a great range of smaller sharing plates, including Salt & Pepper Squid, Prawn Twisters, Garlic Prawns and Chorizo, Bruschetta and Chicken and Garlic Balls.

The list goes on! However, after careful consideration, we just had to try one of the restaurant’s signature dishes; The Oyster Bar Grazing Plate.

This beautifully-presented, generously-sized dish comes laden with the very best from The Temptations menu and is guaranteed to get the taste buds flowing.

Our particular version included Crumbed Haloumi with Cranberry Sauce (worth the visit alone), Honey and Soy Prawns, an Antipasto Mix of feta cheese and chorizo, some fabulous Cheese and Bacon Potato Skins, Salt and Pepper Squid, Garlic Bread and Sweet Potato Chips. The dish changes on a daily basis and Spicy BBQ and Honey Meatballs and Satay Chicken Sliders are just some of the other dishes often included. Wow, what a treat, a hugely enjoyable dish and one that will definitely have us coming back for another try.

Yes, the oysters are plentiful and appetizing, but there is much to enjoy for everyone on this well-crafted menu.

With great views and attentive and friendly service, a visit comes highly recommended.

at parlapa, we are passionate about our food and our food history. Coming from a very different background, we opened our first restaurant in Torino, Northern Italy, almost ten years ago with a very simple philosophy: to serve traditional Italian food to be enjoyed either during a lunch break, as a quick meal or as a takeaway. Typically, traditional dishes, such as Gnocchi, have always required longer preparation and cooking times.

Much like all working people, we have always enjoyed heartwarming comfort food, and our menu features a range of these dishes compiled from both research and old family recipes and cookbooks from our own personal collection – some of which date back to the early 1800’s. We take great pride in sharing with our customers our unique food experiences. Our recipes are based on our own personal favourites, recipes that have been enjoyed by our family for years long before they appear on our menu. We then add a contemporary twist.

My grandmother wasn’t a great cook but she was mad about gnocchi and she needed an assistant, in other words, me. I quickly learned to do the dough using just potato and, here, we use Western Australian grown Royal Blue potatoes and flour. This requires a lot of work and patience but the result is a fluffy-style gnocchi that literally melts in the mouth. And to give it an extra twist, we top it with our signature Ragu, slow-cooked on the stove for four hours.

We are proud of our global approach to our food with our ingredients either sourced from local farmers and Western Australian suppliers or from Italy if we are looking for traditional Italian ingredients that provide great flavour and taste. Passionate about history, we have found the perfect spot in Fremantle; a heritage building in front of the recently renovated Fremantle Town Hall. We look forward to welcoming you.

while motoring south on that well-worn highway between Perth and Margaret River, many travellers will be unaware of the fact they will be driving through the largest and most diverse wine region in Australia, the Geographe. Curving south along the coast of Geographe Bay from Harvey to Busselton, and extending inland over the Darling Range to Collie and Donnybrook, the Geographe Region is home to about 40 vineyards. Most of these are small boutique businesses and many have picturesque cellar doors set amongst beautiful rolling valleys and majestic jarrah forests. Touring the Geographe offers a very personal wine discovery experience because almost every winery 108 FOOD & WINE

in the region is family-run. Which means very often the person at the cellar door will be the same person that prunes the vines, picks the grapes and makes the wines. Be prepared for intimate wine tastings with passionate wine producers.

Being such a large region, the Geographe has a large variation in soil types and micro climates, which translates to ideal growing conditions for many grape varieties. Generally, the area is best known for the traditional French varieties of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc.

The Mediterranean climate also makes the area perfect for growing less well-known varieties from

Spain, Portugal and Italy. There are over 1600 varieties of wine grapes in Australia and the Geographe has many small producers who are experimenting and pioneering the production of alternative varieties.

The emerging popularity of these ‘new’ wines encouraged the Geographe Wine Industry Association to hold the first Alternative Varieties Wine Show in Western Australia last year with renowned wine writer Jane Faulkner as Chief Judge. The show was a great success with entries from around the state and a number of gold medals were won by local producers.

Tempranillo was the strongest alternative variety class with gold awarded to Willow Bridge Estate, Mazza Wines, St Aidan Wines, Bakkheia, Green Door

Wines and Harvey River Estate. Other alternative wine producers to win medals included Smallwater Estate for Zinfandel, Ferguson Falls Estate for its Tempranillo blend and Mandalay Estate for its Durif.

The largest winery in the Geographe wine region, Willow Bridge Estate is a family owned business operated by principals Jeff and Vicki Dewar, who bought the picturesque 180-hectare hillside property in 1996. Situated high on the western watershed of the Ferguson River, the vineyard has spectacular views over the coastal plains.

The environment, climate and soil types set the area apart from the more traditional wine growing regions of the state and provide an environmental combination never previously utilised for the production of premium wines.

With a vision to produce premium, quality varietal wines for both the domestic and international market, in less than a decade the estate has already produced an impressive array of outstanding wines, the most notable being the classic Black Dog Shiraz. In addition to that, at the 2016 Geographe Wine Show, the winery swept the board picking up numerous awards together with six gold and three silver medals. The awards included Wine of the Show and Best Red Wine for its 2015 Gravel Pit Shiraz, Best RosĂŠ for its 2016 Rosa De Solana together with Trophies for Most Successful Producer and Excellence in Winemaking.
