publisher's note Happy June, everybody! I’m excited for the summer season and the ability to get out and take it all in. Little by little we are venturing out to restaurants, shopping Main Street, going to doctors appointments, hitting the gym and heading back to our office buildings! Many of us, however, are still working from home. Whether it is full time or even part time, a functional home office space can be vital to our productivity. Be sure to check out the comprehensive article from Esmi Gonzales of Sort It Out on Home Office Organization! This month’s cover feature is Mommy 2B, a local maternity and children’s boutique right here in Boerne. They have an amazing selection
of stylish and high quality clothing and accessories. They even have plenty of jewelry and handbags to shop! Be sure to check them out starting on page 16. Also in this issue, we share the important work that the Boerne Community Coalition is doing to LOVE Boerne Kids. Each week they pass out food bags to our local food insecure kids. Check it out starting on page 26 to see how you can help feed a child in need this summer. I hope you enjoy the June issue of BBM!

H O ME OF F ICE ORGANI ZI N G by Esmi Gonzales – Sort It Out
A home office can easily stray from its tidy, organized and structured state. It happens to all of us. These tips and instructions are for the person who works out of the home. First make this project an appointment on your calendar. Remember, no other interruptions. Devote the time you feel you can apply yourself to get as much done without getting burned out or overwhelmed. Set your deadline goal but be realistic. This may be a day’s work or broken out into three different dates, your choice but keep your true deadline. Second, have all your organizing tools available for office before you get started. Last, when going through your belongings remember to ask yourself “Do I really need this? Have I used this in the last year?”
1. Break room (or area) down into 4-Zones
• So basically this is 4 corners of the room or space you are working in • Do not stray from one area of the room to another even if you are tempted. Stay focus on one zone at a time. (This strategy will help you to really get some work done. You will have a real visual of your labor. This will be a true motivation to help keep you going because you are seeing actual results.)
2. Start with Zone 1 – if there is furniture in any Zone focus on
14
B oerne B usiness M onthly | June 2020
one piece at a time
• If you have a bookshelf, a printer table, a file cabinet, stick with one piece until you are completely done and satisfied. TIP: Decorative items like boxes and bowls are a “catch-all” for you to unknowingly place paper clips, loose change, pens, pencils and odds and ends. This creates clutter. Truly use these decorative items for just that. The less of these types of items you have around the less likely you are to use them as storage and a catch-all. • Tackle each piece of furniture from top to bottom. Make sure to use the Organizing Signs – Keep, Donate, Other Room, Discard, Recycle, Sell. Use cardboard boxes or bins to collect the different categories. This will make things easier for you to haul off to appropriate destinations.
3. When going through your file cabinet or file drawers, make sure to shred/recycle any outdated paperwork. TIP: If space allows, place file cabinet and printer table close to desk for ease of use. You don’t want to have to walk across the room to pull a file or take something off the printer.
TIP: Office supply stores like Office Max, Office Depot, Staples and some UPS stores offer shredding services usually running about 99 cents per pound. Very safe process. This is a great option if you don’t have the time to sit and shred or if you have a large amount of shredding to accomplish.
4. When working on your desk, start with the desktop.
File whatever paperwork needs filing, or trash or recycled. Keep items on your desktop limited for work space such as computer, phone, notepad and pens and pencils • Donate duplicate items such as calculators, rulers and old printers. • Next move into the desk drawers. Designate items in drawers for ease of use. You want to be able to reach supplies quickly you use on a daily or weekly basis. • Next move to the floor around your desk. There is a “home” for everything. Once you’ve gone through these items, can you place them in drawers and cabinets with other “like” items. If space has not yet been created for these items, set them aside with a Post-It-Note to be placed and put away later. • Labeling will help keep you from misplacing items and mixing items up and definitely help keep you organized. Stick a label outside the drawer or place a label from your label machine inside the drawer if you prefer to hide the labels. Or simply make a label from a piece of paper and place a piece of packing tape or scotch tape over it and place in drawer.
5. Always keep “like” items together in drawers or cabinets, this helps with locating items quickly.
And it helps when you are running low on your supplies. You are also creating a “home” for these items. Use Post-It Notes to help identify the different piles of items while sorting and paring down. • For example, Writing Supplies – notecards, thank you cards, stationery, envelopes and stamps. Computer Items – manuals, printer paper, ink cartridges, CD’s, DVD’s and flash drives. Office Supplies – post it notes, pens, pencils, markers, tape, hanging files, manila folders, paper clips, rubber bands etc. • Use drawer dividers to help keep supplies separate and tidy. These products can be found at any office supply store, Target or Walmart. Or simply use small boxes you may have lying around the house. TIP: When you come across a box or container with lots of small items or paperwork or a mix of both set that box or container aside. This is what I consider “homework.” At a later time (remembering to keep your deadline goal) sit down at the kitchen table with your favorite morning beverage with this box along with a trash bag and a shredder. If you do not have a shedding machine, use another bag to separate papers that should be shredded. Or sit in front of your favorite TV program and go through the items in the box. Before you know it the box will be empty. Don’t stop there! Make sure and put everything away. If you have more boxes, set another time to go through that box or if you are motivated and have time go through it at that time.
6. Go through each zone one at a time remembering to not stray and stay focus.
You are creating “homes” for your items, supplies and paperwork. continued on page 19

From blankets to bows and swaddles to swag, everywhere you turn inside of Mommy 2B there is something fun for moms and babies! Whether you are looking for that perfect baby shower present, have a little one on the way or need a special outfit for your child, this Boerne boutique is sure to have what you are looking for. Megan Baird and Aimee Zrzavy are the sisters behind Mommy 2B and work hard to fill their store with items that are both high quality and stylish. The local boutique was inspired by Baird’s struggle to find maternity clothes locally during her pregnancy and the sisters decided to join forces and fill this much needed void in the local marketplace. They dove in and did lots of brand research to be able to bring Boerne and the hill country a spot where they could get the best of both maternity and baby products. The store was opened Labor Day weekend of 2018. For the expectant mommy, the store carries everything from clothing and intimates to swimsuits, compression garments, hospital robes, workout apparel, nursing pillows and even stretch mark creams and lotions. According to Zrzavy,

“Our maternity and nursing clothing is both stylish and comfortable. We have even had many women that aren’t pregnant come to the store for baby gifts and end up purchasing some of our maternity or nursing clothes because they are that cute!” For the babies and small children, Mommy 2B has boutique style clothing from newborn to 5T. You will find everything from sleepers and gowns continued on page 18

to casual cool t-shirts and hats and even adorable outfits fit for a special occasion! “To help your little one beat the Texas summer heat we have plenty of adorable kids swimwear, goggles and hats on hand too,” added Megan. “And be sure to check us out this fall for Halloween costumes and special holiday attire!” Mommy 2B has plenty of accessories on hand for the little ones as well. “We have tons of adorable bows, burp cloths, bibs, books, lots of teething items like the Munch Mitt, Chewbeads and The Teething Egg. We even carry the sterling silver earrings, necklaces and bracelets for the little ones,” said Aimee. “One of our most popular lines we carry is Posh Peanut. These products are so soft and the prints are adorable. They have everything from knotted gowns and swaddles to crib sheets and mommy robes.” A fun surprise inside of this maternity and baby boutique is that they also carry a large selection of unique accessories for women as well! According to Megan, “We carry these amazing leather and cowhide bags from Stone Feather Road and they even designed Mommy 2B our very own “Mommy Bag” that is beautiful on the outside and waterproof on the inside!” There is also a large selection of belts, wooden and beaded earrings and even handmade, one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces from Western Vintage Revival and Stone Feather Road. Mommy 2B also offers baby shower registries for expectant mothers to be able to let their friends and family know just what they need and want for their new bundle of joy! Gift cards are also available! The store is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00am to 5:30pm. “We are also still offering porch pickups and private shopping outside of our regular store hours during this time. And of course we are sanitizing regularly and offer hand sanitizer at the front door upon entry,” said Zrzavy. “Our customers’ health and safety is our top priority.” Megan and Aimee grew up in Boerne, having moved here in in 1984. “We are both graduates of Boerne High School and love that we get to now be apart of the local Boerne retail community. We hope to not only bring an outstanding selection of maternity and children’s clothing and accessories, but also superb customer service, giving locals one more reason to shop local!” BBM

Fun Fact: Look for the redbirds throughout the store! Found within the logo and around the store, these redbirds are more than decorations. Megan and Aimee’s mom always told them growing up when they saw a redbird that is was their granny. Their mom passed away a few years back and the sisters now see the redbirds as a reminder that even though their granny and mom may have passed, they are still with them.

up and getting out of control is the number one complaint from most of my clients. Here are a few tips to keep it under control: • Set aside 10 to 15 minutes each day to sort mail so that it doesn’t overwhelm you at the end of the week. File by: Read, Action Needed (i.e.: return a phone call, RSVP to an invitation, set appointments, respond to correspondence) and File. • Use trays to organize mail and papers that come across your desk using the above files. • Immediately throw away junk mail. • After reading important and relevant mail and taking action, shred any mail with personal information. Fellowes makes a shredder for any budget and can be found at Target, Walmart and most office supply stores. Keep a small box near your desk to store paperwork for shredding. Mark your calendar weekly to remind you of this task. • Magazines, once you have read them either recycle them or if you keep them a few months, use magazine file boxes to store them. Newsletters, catalogs and magazines can also be stored in magazine file boxes. These file boxes can sit on top of a file cabinet; label each file box for easy reference. TIP: If you accidentally recycle or giveaway a magazine, you can always call or order it online, magazines archive them for years. • Weekly maintenance like the ones above are good habits to keep you organized. The key to staying organized is creating habits, they will soon become a daily routine and you won’t even realize you are staying organized!

Another Source of Income in
RETIREMENT by John Keeton – Covenant
Interest rates are near all-time lows, social security likely will not get a cost of living adjustment this year, and pensions are becoming a thing of the past. The bottom line is that retirement income is becoming harder and harder to generate. Investing in stocks with dividends may be an option that fits nicely within a retiree’s overall financial needs and plan. While dividends can be a key piece of the retirement income puzzle, there are a few things to be mindful of when focusing on dividends for overall income needs. The charts below illustrate the stark contrast in income between U.S. treasury bonds and dividends from the S&P 500 since 1980. While rates have essentially gone to zero, dividends on the S&P 500 have gone up over 900% during the same timeframe! This has made dividend stocks more competitive than bonds from an income standpoint and a great vehicle to combat inflation. This drop in rates is making it harder to get income and this is where

dividends may help supplement income needs. In addition to interest rates falling to alltime lows, social security is another income source that is a challenge for retirees. With inflation very low due to the economic crisis of 2020, there’s a high probability that social security recipients will receive no adjustment to their social security checks this year. This is the true definition of “fixed income”. Lastly, pensions are becoming a thing of the past replaced by 401(k) plans. This has put more of the burden of saving for retirement on the employee rather than the employer providing an income to the retiree for their entire life. For all these reasons, retirees are living on their savings more and more. That’s where dividends come into play. Below are some common considerations for dividend investors. 1. DIVIDENDS ARE NOT BONDS. THEY ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE. While bonds have a stated rate, dividends are declared by the company each quarter. They can be lowered, kept the same, or increased. In 2020, there have been close to 50 companies within the S&P 500 that have cut or suspended their dividends. This can drastically affect your income. The key takeaway is to do your research before investing in a dividend stock or fund. Research the business and the future ability of the company to continue the dividend. 2. DON’T ALWAYS BUY THE STOCKS WITH THE HIGHEST DIVIDENDS It’s tempting to look for only stocks that have a very high dividend yield. Keep in mind that when a company has a high dividend yield, it could be because the dividend remained constant, but the price of the stock fell for various reasons. This could eventually lead to the company cutting their dividend. Besides just focusing on high dividends, look for companies that have had the ability to not only sustain their dividends, but consistently raise their dividends over the years. 3. DIVIDENDS ARE NOT ALWAYS MORE TAX EFFICIENT Dividends can be taxed either two ways:
Qualified or Ordinary. • Ordinary dividends are taxed as ordinary income (taxed at same rate as your overall income tax rate) • Qualified dividends are taxed at a lower rate (maximum rate is 20% in 2020) Generally, most income generated within a portfolio outside of dividends will be considered ordinary unless you are investing in tax exempt municipal bonds. If you are in a higher tax bracket, consider having qualified dividends to effectively generate higher yields after tax within your portfolio. Dividends have been around for literally hundreds of years. While they are a great income source, they are just one part of a comprehensive retirement income plan. Income sources, taxes, legacy goals, and risk are just
a few elements every retiree needs to be thinking about in order to put a comprehensive income plan together. A financial advisor who is part of an advisory firm that is a fiduciary can take all the retiree’s information and craft a plan that works for the retiree. Income planning in 2020 is more of an art than a science. Having the right tools to put the plan together is critical. BBM

The Circulation Experts at PVA Can Help the Healing Process of Wounds
This month, during Wound Healing Awareness Month, we bring attention to chronic, non-healing wounds throughout the body. When you have one or more of these factors you increase your risk of having plaque, which is a sticky substance made up of fat and cholesterol that builds up in the arteries. This buildup of plaque causes the passageway in the arteries to become narrow which in turn limits the blood flow to your extremities. If left untreated, this will cause non-healing sores, wounds, foot ulcers or infections which can lead to amputations, heart attack or stroke. Early detection is key to avoid seri-
The first step is to see your doctor immediately if you have any of the risk factors or symptoms listed above. A simple, painless and noninvasive test called a duplex ultrasound can determine if you have poor circulation and the severity of the condition. Based on the severity of your condition, treatment options may include lifestyle changes, medications, minimally invasive cath lab procedures such as angioplasty or stenting, which are done in a PVA office, or open bypass surgery. At PVA, we are blood circulation experts. Each and every day, we focus our knowledge and expertise on restoring circulation throughout the body which can end up healing wounds and help our patients avoid amputation. Did you know that about 1 in 5, or 19.37%, of children in the Boerne area face food insecurity? That is the number of local kids within the Boerne Independent School District that are on the free and reduced National School Lunch and Breakfast programs. But what happens to those kids when school is out for summer break, or recently the COVID-19 crisis? The Boerne Community Coalition’s (BCC) “LOVE Boerne Kids” program helps to fill that gap, providing these children in need with daily lunch and weekend food bags. This summer, due to the current Covid-19 crisis, that number is anticipated to increase the need for the Boerne Community Coalition’s summer food program and they are serving up to 300 children daily. BCC has been

The bags are available first-come, first serve and are distributed every Wednesday during summer break from 11:00am -12:00pm at St. John Lutheran Church for drive thru/walk-up pickup. BCC has been working with Blessings in a Backpack and the Boerne ISD to ensure the parents/guardians of children who are eligible are aware of this summer distribution. Setting times and making appointments on your calendars for your offices tasks and to-do’s are a great reminder to help you stay organized. Each day look over your calendar to see what the day has in store for you. Set reminder pings to alert you to the upcoming tasks. • Set aside time each day to return calls. Leave specific messages and the time you called if the person you’re trying to reach is not available. • Also set aside time to read and respond to emails, first thing in the morning, after lunch and before the end of the day. • Empty workspace of everything but the project you’re working on to cut down on distractions. • Keep takeout menus in a file from favorite restaurants so you can order lunch in if your day is hectic. • At the end of each project or event, organize paperwork and file or store it. • Straighten desk at the end of the day and especially at the end of the week so that you can start each morning with a clear desk. When you have completed this project, load up your vehicle with the donation, shredding and recycle boxes. Make a note on your calendar or place a post-it-note on your vehicle’s dashboard to remind you of these deliveries.
