Q: Signage

Hi Lou & Ged

On our most recent visit to GA, my wife and I decided to do the walk from the

Q:  Broken Bin on Avda. Mediterraneo

I have been back in England since my last email and returned to see nothing has happened in reference to the broken bin. Here are some photos to show the problems we face after rain flooding around bins and onto the roundabout. The furthest away photo shows the distance from the bin and roundabout to the nearest drain so consequently the rainwater does not drain away. You can also see the weeds

lighthouse in GA over to Santa Pola. We set off with pleasant skies and a supply of water to keep us hydrated on the journey. The walk took about 90 minutes; I would recommend it to anyone who has not done it yet. There are some great photo opportunities overlooking Santa Pola and the island of Tabarca. The terrain is a trail path and although there are stones and rocks underfoot, it should be manageable for most fitness and mobility levels.

The problem we found was that the signage to promote the various paths and routes have become very weathered (photos attached) and even though our eyesight is good, others may struggle to navigate the route efficiently.

Are there any plans to replace theses signs to help the visitors to the area who may wish to use these trails?

Regards, Graham

Oscar Valenzuela’s Answer:

I am glad you are enjoying our wonderful walks here. I am also glad to report that all signage has recently been replaced.

overgrown on the roads. The bin now has graffiti on it as well as still only being able to open by hand.

I would appreciate if you could forward this email to Cllr Valenzuela. As I have mentioned before when this area is flooded it is an accident waiting to happen and if this happens then maybe, something will finally be done.

Thanks, Patrick

Oscar Valenzuela’s Answer:

Thank you Patrick for your email and photos. We have a project for this road already in place and the road will be fixed to divert the water in opposite direction from the houses.

Q: Floods

Hi Lou & Ged

I hope you are both well and keeping dry. Please see attached photos of the road outside our home on Calle Monte de Santa Pola. If the bad rain had continued, the water would have entered our back yard.

I cleaned debris from the drains on either side of the road. I had to have the sand bags ready! Can you please pass our photos onto Cllr Valenzuela.

Cheers Jim and Susan

Oscar Valenzuela’s Answer:

Thank you for your email Jim and Susan. This is something we have discussed with our technical engineer and have found a solution. Now we are waiting for the budget to start fixing the road.

Q: Lakes on the Clot de Galvany

Hi Ged & Lou

I do not know if I am imagining it, but the lakes on the Clot de Galvany appear to be getting bigger and I just wondered where all the water was coming from. Will the expansion of the lakes affect the wildlife?

Thanks Jo

GA Advertiser Answer:

We would like to say thank you to Juan from our Home Turf pages who helped us research this interesting question.

According to Juan’s research, there are two main potential reasons: cntd on page 6

Dear Lou

Thank you getting back to me and printing my email about speeding on Calle Belgica in your January issue. Hopefully something might change. I really appreciate all you great work on the magazine. It’s the highlight of my month, knowing what’s going on where and when. A big thank you.

1. There is a pumping and conduction system for reclaimed and treated grey waters from the Arenales Del Sol treatment plant to the artificial and natural ponds of the natural area. It is then possible to maintain a permanent sheet of water, achieving an ecological balance of the environment. It is possible that after the summer, and despite the lack of rain, the ponds grow in size as more water is treated in the area during the summer.

2. Ponds sometimes experience a level rise weeks after it has rained. This is because the ponds, in addition to being fed by the rainwater that comes from runoff, are also recharged by the aquifer that is below. This is the reason why we sometimes observe a rise in the water level for no apparent reason.

LATEST NEWS FROM THE GA COUNCILLOR OSCAR VALENZUELA

MULTI-SPORTS COURT

New and improved works to the multi-sports court at GA Sports Centre have now been complete.

The multi-sports court has 2 basketball courts, a volleyball and football area.

Construction of the new football field will begin soon.

LARGE ITEMS COLLECTIONS

Tuesdays and Thursdays ONLY.

Please Whatsapp only this number any day of the week to let them know the name of the street you are leaving your large items on.

This would help to make the service more efficient and keep our Gran Alacant nice and tidy.

Elche Council is an example as they treat and reuse 100% of their water for irrigation or like El Clot, nature base solutions supporting natural habitats. Sadly, this is a very different strategy that the one followed by the Santa Pola Council.

As you probably know this year El Carabassi beach had to be closed to the public during the summer due to the high levels of ‘poo’ in the water. During high season, Santa Pola simply pushes the overflow of untreated water directly to the sea as the treatment plant next to Panorama area cannot cope with the extra visitors. This is one of many reasons as to why we oppose further building projects in Gran Alacant, existing infrastructure cannot simply cope!

TOURIST INFORMATION DISPLAY

A new Tourist Information Display has been installed near GA Health Centre in front of BBVA.

It is hoped that this will improve information dissemination to the residents and visitors to the area.

THE BIGGER PICTURE - INTERNATIONAL TOURISM FAIR

Santa Pola exhibits gastronomy, water sports and the best beaches at the international tourism fair in Madrid.

The Mayor of Santa Pola, Loreto Serrano Pomares, and Councilor for Tourism, Julio Miguel Baeza Andreu, attended the international tourism fair FITUR in Madrid to exhibit and promote Gran Alacant and Santa Pola.

The Councilor for Tourism, Julio Baeza said, “Thanks to good management, we have

obtained 2.4 million euros from European funds for tourist infrastructures. One of the first things that we will see is the protection and enhancement of our archaeological heritage, which is also a very important tourist resource. At this FITUR exhibition we are going to show the world all the good that Santa Pola has to offer”.

During the 2 days of the fair, there was a 2-minute drone footage of Santa Pola showing the beauty of the Santa Pola coastline including the lighthouse viewpoint, passing through all the beaches and Tabarca, to the natural park of the salt mines of Santa Pola.

Book of the month

My Recommended Book of the Month

Fredrik Backman A Man Called Ove

Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

At first sight, OVE is almost certainly the grumpiest man you will ever meet. He thinks everyone around him are idiots, unable to read signs and follow rules.

His new neighbours cannot reverse a trailor properly, he loathes joggers and shop assistants who talk in code and he hates the perpetrators of the vicious coup d’etat that ousted him as Chairman of the Residents’ Association. However that will not stop him making his daily inspection rounds of the local streets. Despite himself he cannot help but get caught up in the lives of those around him even though it prevents his own personal life progressing as he wishes Behind the façade of this grumpy man is someone who is grieving and is unhappy.

But there is something about Ove that is quite irresistible to those around him. A funny, uplifting tale of love and community that will certainly leave you feeling more positive about life. This book has just been made into a film with the part of Ove (Otto) played by Tom Hanks.

The Lowedown with Lynne

INTERVIEW with Amanda & Colin Green

Hi, my name is Lynne and I have been lucky to call Gran Alacant home for the last 5 years. People fascinate me and I love to hear about their adventures and life stories.

This month’s interview is my very first ‘couples’ interview with Amanda and Colin Green. They bought their holiday home in 2004 and came to live in GA permanently in 2018.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO GA?

Colin “We bought a holiday home off plan in 2004 after visiting the area on a viewing trip. The location close to the beach and the proximity to the airport appealed to us. We would come out as often as possible sometimes every 6 weeks from Friday to Sunday as flights were very reasonable and we were able to enjoy the beautiful weather.”

Amanda “We decided there was more to life than working all the time and Colin suffered from seasonal affective disorder (SAD). I stopped working in May 2018 and Colin sold his business in June. We went on a cruise to the Greek Islands and Croatia then drove to our new life in Spain with our dog Enzo.

WHAT WAS LIFE LIKE BEFORE GA?

Amanda “I trained as a medical secretary and worked my way up the ranks in the NHS to PA to the Chief Executive, Outpatients Manager, Deputy Directorate Manager in Imaging and finally Divisional Governance & Quality Manager.

I worked at hospitals in Stoke, Chester and Stafford from 1985-2018 for almost 33 years. I saw a lot of changes in the NHS and a lot of working practises which came round full circle.”

Colin “I trained as a Chef initially then my career changed direction when I trained as an electrician. I worked for various companies before setting up my own Electrical installation company which I ran for 16 years”.

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR FAMILY

Amanda “We have a daughter Rachel. She is getting married in August this year so our goal is to get in great shape for her wedding. Enzo our dog, who was originally our daughter’s dog, will be coming to the wedding and will be Rachel’s ring bearer.”

HOW DID YOU MEET AND WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION?

Amanda “We met in Stoke at a 5-aside footie tournament organised by the hospital I worked at. We were married 18 months later in June 1987.

I thought Colin was very handsome and confident when I first saw him.”

Colin “My first impression of Amanda was, WOW!”

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT EACH OTHER?

Amanda “What I love about Colin is he is 100% genuine. He is totally honest and true.”

Colin “That’s a difficult one as there is so many things, but probably the fact we get along so easily. We very rarely argue and are happy in each other’s company.”

HOW DO YOU KEEP BUSY?

Amanda “We both attend Spanish classes at the Milky Way Academy at Santara Resort. We have been learning Spanish since we first moved here. We felt it was important for us to integrate into the community. I do Yoga with Katrin twice a week and fitness classes with GA BootCamps twice a week to keep in shape. Sometimes we are like passing ships in the night. We love our food. We enjoy cooking together but also enjoy going to our favourite restaurants Patagonia Steak House in Sierra Mar, La Paletta and Ceilo Lago and also further afield.

Colin “As well as our Spanish classes I attend two intercambio meetings to practise my conversational Spanish at The Social Hub and Milky Way Academy. I did my Scuba Diving Rescue Diver qualification, we tried the paragliding here in GA, and we have enjoyed organised sailing trips and the 22km downhill bike ride. To relax, I love chilling in the Jacuzzi on our roof terrace.

We love nothing better than packing up a picnic, couple of chairs and a table and our dog Enzo and going off exploring our beautiful surroundings. We use the Turismo Costa Blanca Facebook page gives lots of ideas on beautiful places to visit.”

COLIN WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO BECOME PRESIDENT OF YOUR COMMUNITY?

Colin “I was asked by the previous President if I would consider talking over the role. Eventually I agreed when the previous President could no longer commit to the role due to his growing business, I decided to help in July 2021.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR ROLE AS PRESIDENT OF YOUR COMMUNITY?

Colin “Dealing with a multi-national community and keeping everyone happy. We have holiday homeowners and people who live here all year round who have different opinions on how things should be. Thankfully, the previous President had everything organised already so it made my transition into the role very easy.”

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT LIVING IN GA?

“We love learning the language and embracing the Spanish outdoor lifestyle and most importantly the blue sky and sunshine. It is good for the soul.”

Thank you Amanda & Colin

Valencia, leading by example

A couple of months ago we wrote about the participation of Santa Pola Council in the Urban GreenUp programme.

This programme aims to develop nature based tools and solutions to improve the urban environment. Our council’s involvement in the programme requires it to commit to learning from the Urban GreenUp programme with an aim to implementing similar solutions in its urban areas.

We have written to our local councilor Oscar asking what the council has learnt so far from its participation in Urban GreenUp and what we can expect to see implemented in Gran Alacant; unfortunately we have not yet received a reply.

We reached out to the Urban GreenUp project team to learn from them directly about their work. We joined a fascinating webcast where some of those participating in Italy and the UK talked about the type of schemes being trialed in Verona and Liverpool. These schemes include local planting schemes to reduce rainwater runoff and regulate temperatures in Liverpool by replacing traditional concrete and tarmac with planted areas and permeable surfacing. The University of Liverpool team have so far recorded excellent results from their trial projects.

Between Christmas and New Year we spent a few days in our regional capital of Valencia which is also leading in progressive urban design and planning. Valencia is always a joy to visit but we were especially interested to learn why it has been selected by the EU as the European Green Capital for 2024. In awarding the role to Valencia the EU Environment Commissioner noted that

Valencia and other cities were “working hard to build a healthier and greener environment for their residents and are an inspiration to others. They show that the ambition of the European Green Deal to build resilient societies is the only way forward. Cities are at the forefront of this transition and with the progress made so far, I truly believe that we can build a greener and fairer Europe for all.”

Valencia is bringing real change to its urban environment through nature based solutions. The city is building nature into the fabric of the city through a range of developments. These include ribbon parks and green corridors through the city which act to moderate temperature, regulate moisture and control flooding whilst providing pleasant and enjoyable walking, cycling and recreational routes. In addition, the city is supporting the development of urban allotments returning the traditional huertas to the city. Similar to Liverpool,

Follow us on Instagram: juanruano.oficial & archiemaddan

Valencia is also experimenting with replacing hard concrete and tarmac with soft landscaping and permeable surfaces to trap rainwater and avoid local flooding. We noticed that the city is installing pavement planters in side streets, similar to what we have seen in Hamburg and Barcelona.

The effect of the planted green areas in Valencia was noticeable; it feels cooler and more comfortable. Studies have shown that vegetation in urban areas has a surprisingly substantial effect on reducing local surface temperature and not just through shading by trees. However, it requires more than planting a few street trees and laying some grass to bring about a real improvement: The sun baked streets of Gran Alacant will need a proper reengineering if we are to enjoy the same benefits as the citizens of Valencia! It will be interesting to hear from our council how they intend to rise to the challenge of using what they have learnt from Urban GreenUp to reimagine Gran Alacant and Santa Pola town. As average temperatures start to rise due to climate change it will become important to mitigate the effects of this; the heatwave of the past year demonstrated that we have no time to lose if we are to make our town more habitable.

Gran Alacant currently has some big building developments under way, these schemes must include features similar to those now being built in other cities and

towns if we are to enjoy a good quality of life. Santa Pola council is our local planning authority. It has the power to make a real difference to these developments by demanding that these new schemes include the type of nature based solutions that the council has committed to in the Urban

GreenUp programme that it so energetically participated in. Simply letting developers pour concrete and tarmac is no longer acceptable, as our council knows only too well! We will be keeping a very close eye on the design of new developments in Gran Alacant and hope to see the fruits of our council’s new knowledge (and EU funding).

TERRY TALKS

Alcohol free opinion & Chat

terry@montelinvestments.co.uk

TERRY TALKS BACK!

I could not resist. Keeping my opinions to myself is like trying to stop the air escaping from a burst balloon.

We are living through a difficult time with the war, the pandemic and now the cost of living crisis. The hot topic now seems to be the cost of living crisis. I love how we have to give everything labels now. I do not remember any labels back in the 70’s and 80’s.

The government has handed out money to try and help with energy bills, which I hope has helped many, but in my opinion we get used to high prices and the energy companies will always want to sell at the highest price, so don’t expect any reductions. We now get excited if we see petrol, prices go below 1.80 a litre whether that be euros or sterling. Our mind set has changed. We will see 1.50 as cheap whereas it is not at all.

Due to increases in fuel costs, everything related to it has also risen. Everything has to be transported so everything has gone up. Everything needs energy to manufacture, so everything has increased in price. We now see the usual gut reaction to inflation, the plague of the 70’s strikes.

Nobody blames the unions for fighting for their members, but they are fighting the wrong battle, which long term is not In the interest of its members. Inflation in the enemy of the working family.

The rich are not affected by the price of a loaf, or the size of their electricity bill, but the rest of us are. Chasing inflation with large

salary increases is ABSOLUTELY the wrong thing to do. If you are a railway worker and you get a 13% pay rise, transport costs rise, and referring to the earlier part of this article everything else follows. Others want to keep up with you and all you end up with is a bigger pay packet that buys no more than it did previously. Inflation destroys the worker. History tells us this, therefore controlling it is the number one priority. This means biting the bullet, accepting we have to lose some of our wealth to gain future wealth. Increasing interest rates is a proven method of controlling inflation, painful but in the long term, it works. Yes, it is a pain in the arse the wealthy are rarely affected, but that is life. The wealthy will always exist.

So do not let politics divide us. Left vs Right is a battle that benefits nobody. We are one nation let us work together for the benefit of the majority. Yes, some may benefit more than others, but THAT’S LIFE!

WHY DOGS SHOULD ALWAYS WALK ON THE LEASH?

Q: Hi Lou, A few issues back you had an article about "Dogs on Leads" and how it is law that they should be on a lead when in public places.

I have a dog and love dogs and we are responsible owners. We never go out without poo bags and a water bottle and our dog is never walked off the lead in public places.

I know dog poo is a big problem in Gran Alacant especially on the urbanisations. A few weeks ago I was sat reading at my dining table and saw a man walking his two dogs, off the lead. He was well in front of the dogs and one of the dogs poo'd on the pavement. The man was oblivious to this and carried on walking around the corner. I ran outside to shout to him but was too late. I knew the mans name as I'd only spoken to him, socially, a few weeks before so I knew the name of one of his dogs. I managed to get a message to him to tell him what I'd just seen.

In the last 2 weeks I've taken photo's of some of the dogs that are walked "off lead" and I do seem to be seeing more and more dogs being walked off the lead. Some are dogs that are usually walked on the lead now being walked off the lead, almost as if it's ok.

The other reason dogs should be on leads is that, although their dog might be very friendly, my dog isn't always friendly. So, if a dog was off the lead and came over to my dog, the other owner has no control over what might happen.

I wondered if you could maybe put a follow up article in the magazine, again stressing what the law is.

Kind Regards, Lynne

Well, all the reasons I'm thinking about can be summarized like this: you, as a pet owner, are the liable person for whatever your pet would do. Pets, same as children or mentally disabled people, are not responsible for their actions, so, from the moment they are not but us, keeping them under control becomes absolutely necessary, and, in case of dogs, the way to do it is to walk them on the leash.

Despite they are a member of our family and we think we know their reactions perfectly, we must not forget they are animals, and we will never know 100% what they are thinking about. As a horse trainer told me once: "there is no way to know if they have woken up with a terrible headache that day".

Here is a little list of reasons why you you shouldn't let your dog run off the leash:

TRAFFIC:

We have heard hundreds of times (fortunately less and less as time goes by) "my dog walks always by my side, so no leash is necessary". Well, I must sadly say that we have sent to the crematory a significant number of those dogs which "walk always by my side". All you need is a sudden noise, a rabbit or a cat, the smell of a female in season, etc, and there comes the tragedy. But sometimes the tragedy doesn't end just here. Let's suppose your dog was running free and has been hitten

by a car, and the car suffered a damage at the bodywork. Can you guess who will pay the workshop's bill? Exactly. But this is not the worst thing it may happen: imagine that, instead of a car or a lorry, the vehicle involved is a bike or a motobike.

FIGHTS:

Dogs, same as people, have their preferences: they love some individuals, they don't care about other ones, and really hate some others. And this is applicable to both naturally friendly and naturally aggressive dogs. So don't tempt fate. A fight is always a big trouble, specially if the difference of size of the contenders is very big, and if we are talking of two females, specially non neutered ones, whose fights are very often a duel to the death (in males is more common "much ado about nothing", just like many men). Be very careful when trying to stop the fight, because you'll have many chances of visiting the hospital.

OTHER PEDESTRIANS:

ENVIRONMENTAL DANGERS:

As many ones as you can imagine: poisoning (if you find something at the campo which looks like poison, call Guardia Civil as soon as possible!!), poisonous plants or animals (remember pinetree caterpillar season is starting!!), pieces of glass or barbed wire which produce nasty cuts, precipices, scavenging, which may produce a gastroenteritis or a blockage, sources of transmission of infectious and parasitic diseases... or just running away. Fortunately most lost dogs are recovered via the microchip, but this happy end doesn't happen every time.

Not even to mention an aggressive dog. Let's imagine a 80lb Labrador which decides it's a good idea to show how much it loves that adorable human baby. You might be taken to court if the dog makes the baby fall down, even if there is no damage.

Other "minor" problems, such as pee or poo at non allowed places, accidental pregnancies, etc.

WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY ABOUT IT?

Well, in Spain there is not a regulation for all the territories. The Government allows every town to decide if dogs off the leash are allowed or not. As anyone can imagine, most Town Halls decided not to allow dogs walking off the leash, and there are fines for those who disobey the regulation. We are talking, of course, about non-potentially dangerous dogs. In case of potentially dangerous ones, it's absolutely forbidden in Spain to let them go off the leash, and, apart from this, the leash must be shorter than 1.5m, non-extensible, and the dog must wear a muzzle all the time, and, of course, the fines are bigger.

But the matter is much simplier: we all are adult people, and we must share with other people and other animals the streets and other public areas, always respecting each other, and keeping our dogs on the leash avoids lots of situations that may imply a real danger. Just empathy and respect.

This lovely, friendly boy is in desperate need of a new home. Found in the Guardamar park area some kind people tried to take him into their home but unfortunately their other cats won’t accept him. He is around 1 or 2 years old and has just been neutered. Surely he has been a house cat before as he’s litter trained and used to being around dogs.

JAX

Jax has been with us just over a month and is such a loveable character, he loves lots of fuss and cuddles, is obedient and enjoys his walks. He is fully vaccinated, neutered, chipped with a passport. Good with other dogs but would be better in a cat free home.

BUDDY

BUDDY is a Spanish Mastin approximately 10 months old. He was very nervous when he came to us but is starting to settle and playing with some of the other dogs. He is obedient, good on a lead and loves his cuddles.Buddy has been vet checked, vaccinated, chipped and has a passport.

GRAN ALACANT WALKING FOOTBALL

Everyone is delighted with the news, in last month’s edition of this magazine, regarding the 8-a-side football pitch and we hope to be playing on it before the end of the year.

Our next lunchtime get-together for members and partners will be in the Dick Turpin Bar, Sierra Mar on Tuesday 7th February at 1pm. Anyone interested in finding out more about our playing sessions is welcome to join us.

On 11th January we restarted our weekly Wednesday sessions at 11am at the Indoor Sports Centre on Av. D’Escandinavia, 78.

It was good to see several new members coming along to enjoy the Walking Football and also the drinks in Tommy’s Bar afterwards, where we sang Happy Birthday to celebrate Jim Roberts 70th birthday.

Those members who are also in the Elche CF Supporters Group are continuing to attend all the local matches and we can only hope for some better performances and results this year.

GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY

GAGS are now back to playing twice a week, Tuesday and Friday at 8am. We are looking forward to meeting up with our regular players and welcoming new members whether they be residents or visitors.

SOCIETY DETAILS ARE AS FOLLOWS: Where: El Plantio Golf Resort. The official address is A-79, Km3, 03114, Alicante.

When: the formal Society Day is Tuesdays weekly when all golfers are most welcome. In addition we have an informal get together every Friday which has always been a Gentleman’s Day.

Time: on both days normally 8am so please be there by 7.40am. Occasionally the Starter may request we change the time so unless you are a regular golfer it would be best to check with us beforehand.

Cost: usually €50 per round at peak times to include a buggy plus €1.50 mandatory insurance charge. It can sometimes be cheaper during less busy, off peak seasons. In addition the Society requires €5 sweep money which is all paid out at the end of the round.

Gran Alacant’s Elche CF SUPPORTERS GROUP

A group of football fans in Gran Alacant have set-up their own supporters club to watch the local professional club, Elche CF, at their home games at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero, and their away games in local bars around Gran Alacant.

Members include football fans from England, Scotland, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, and of course Spain. And while the first love of these might be Newcastle United, Liverpool, Manchester United, Celtic, or Rangers, the common ground is that on match days everyone is green and white in support of Elche.

It has not been a great season for the Franjiverdes in what is their centenary year. Elche have found themselves in last place in La Liga all season and face a mammoth task to survive relegation to Segunda. Though hope is not lost just yet!

For away games, depending on the kickoff time and date, and what game a bar will actually show to accommodate their numbers, the group usually meets 30 minutes before the start to watch the match together.

Home games see the group move around different bars in Gran Alacant as their meeting place, with bars used this season including the Jolly Roger, Naty’s, Shooters, The Pub, and Tommy’s.

From there, the group arranges carsharing to get up to the ground in time for some pre-match beers and food before returning to Gran Alacant afterwards.

Travel to the ground historically was problematic with no easy public transport links, other than changing buses in Santa Pola which would take an age, and would also leave you stranded in Elche after some of the late final whistles.

With the group sharing driving duties, the group has managed to shift larger groups of fans to games.

Tickets are always easy to come by via the club website at www.elchecf.es apart from for the visits of Real Madrid and Barcelona. There is also the occasional spare ticket available through the group as well.

Match rounds in Spain have the games all spread out with each one being televised. And it is normal for the actual date and time of the match to not be announced until 2 to 4 weeks beforehand. So if you look at any fixtures now and see a Sunday kick-off at 4pm, remember that this will never be the exact time or date of the game.

Home games in February are against Villarreal on the weeknd of the 5th, Espanyol on the weeknd of the 19th, and Betis on the weekend of the 26th.

If you are interested in watching an Elche match, find the group on Facebook at ‘Peña Elche CF de Gran Alacant’.

¡Mucho Elche!

GRAN ALACANT RUNNERS

THE (CONTINUING) ADVENTURES OF THE GRAN ALACANT RUNNERS

XXXI SANTA POLA HALF MARATHON

the main organisers Club Atletismo Santa Pola, and not forgetting the fantastic support on the day by the residents of Gran Alacant and Santa Pola who together with the travelling families and friends of the competitors, who travel here from near and far, create an amazing atmosphere for the runners, clapping and shouting encouragement as we went by them. This is a big day in the calendar of events for Santa Pola whether a runner or spectator and is always a great success.

Sunday 22 January saw the XXXI Santa Pola Half Marathon which started and finished on Calle Fernando Perez Ojeda on the harbour front. This run is widely regarded as one of the best half marathons in Spain, if not the best, and we are fortunate to have it here in our neighbourhood.

There were a number of runners from Gran Alacant taking part, some for the first time and some like Rob Buchan who is a veteran of 16 in Santa Pola. Ian, Graeme and Geoff flew into to Gran Alacant specifically to take part, whereas others, who are here in GA already have enjoyed some good weather in which to train and prepare for the run.

The race always attracts a good international field of runners, with the Africans invariably winning both the male and female categories (At the time of writing I don’t have the official results).

I mention this every year, and I make no apology this year, but the race wouldn’t go ahead if it wasn’t for the main sponsors, Ayuntamiento de Santa Pola and Diputacion de Alicante plus the many other local sponsors. Additionally there is an amazing amount of voluntary work undertaken by

And as the bands stopped playing, the last runners crossed the finishing line to collect their medals and refreshments.

10, 000 weary but satisfied runners made their way home to a well earned rest - Until the next time!!!

Incidentally, if anyone is interested in a more structured training and coaching programme, Club Atletismo Santa Pola, based in the football ground in Santa Pola, have regular training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday every week. I can put you in contact if you contact me.

In the meantime if you are visiting the area and want to run with someone, please get in touch with Geoff on 0044/ 7476851356

GA SOCIAL CYCLISTS

There is a vibrant group of social cyclists in Gran Alacant who meet up outside of Molly Malones most days of the week at around 10:00am. We ride hybrid and off road bikes, are of varying ages, fitness levels and both sexes and usually cycle the rural roads and paths around Gran Alacant, Santa Pola and Elche which means 12 – 25 miles per ride.

Fitter, stronger cyclists can opt to take different routes but, we always meet up at a designated stop for a coffee, and importantly, a natter. Sometimes the group is just two cyclists, whilst other times it can be as many as 10-12 and as a testament to the group, in the years we have been meeting, many strong friendships have been formed.

As we don’t all live in Gran Alacant we communicate via a Whatsapp Group so it is best to check on the Whatsapp group who is around and who is going out on any particular day.

Please note, there is a Road Bike group in Gran Alacant who can be found on Facebook under Gran Alacant Road Cyclists (Bici Gran ALACANT group) where you can find their various meet up places and times.

If you want to join us please contact us on Whatsapp 00353 / 87 991 6020
