Guia Street Circuit

2O14 Macau GP peed freaks should be getting excited. If you love the thrill of the chase, the Macau Grand Prix will be gearing up to give you all the heart-stopping action you'll need for the year. Coming into its sixth decade, the Macau Grand Prix is one of Asia's most venerable and respected Grand Prix races through one of the world's most spectacular race-tracks. The cars zoom down the narrow lanes on the legendary Guia street circuit of this centuries-old city, and has long had a reputation as one of the world's hardest tracks. Fast straights, sharp corners and hill climbs combine to create an exhilirating race. As veteran driver William Lok told BOOM, "Macau is the most dangerous circuit in the

s

world. All top drivers are attracted to the circuit's challenging design. The Oriental Corner is one of the fastest in the world and when it heads into the mountains, the corners are blind." There will be seven races in total. In addition to the Formula 3 World Cup, there will also be the FIA World Touring Car Championship Season Grand Finale as well as the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix. Tickets can be bought online or from a selected, licensed sellers in Macau, Hong Kong and Southern China, with varying prices depending on both the day and where you want to sit: HKD$50 for practice days and HKD$350, $550 and $900 for racing days on Reservoir Stand, Grand Stand and Lisboa Stand respectively.

chali 2na of claSSic group juraSSic 5 SpeakS to boom before hiS hk gig he man born in Chicago in the early 70s as Charles Stewart has a style that is something of an antidote to the more abrasive nature of some of the younger acts that have appeared of late. More importantly, Chali 2na played a vital role in shaping the classic 90s sound - both as part of

t

Jurassic 5 and, since around 2004, as a solo artist. To date he has released the full-length Fish Market, and in the process collaborated with the likes of Roots Manuva, Damian Marley, and Talib Kweli. Over a crackling line from Los Angeles, where he is based, Chali 2na is at pains to stress that while his various LPs and singles over the years may have gone largely unnoticed there is a wealth of material there that he is keen to share. “I really want to entertain people, and there will be a little bit of everything from my albums and mix-tapes as well as some J5 stuff…I just want to share what I have…it’s a gift” With a threepiece band in support it will likely have a different feel and rhythm to a typical hip-hop show, which often features MCs and DJ without live instrumentation. Inevitably talk drifts back to Jurassic 5 who split up in 2007 only

Sep

to reform last year for a number of one-off live shows. And when pressed about a new album he responds with a resounding ‘watch this space’. He ums and ahs, then laughs mock-coldly before replying, “I’m not supposed to say”, followed by something inaudible. “If something happens it’ll be great,” he says, finally. As for the reasons behind the break up seven years ago he put it down to ‘typical family issues’: “sometimes you love them, sometimes you’re mad at them and fight…but we’re all good now.” As for their reforming last year he described it poignantly as a ‘beautiful thing.’ As to why there are more solo artists rather than groups these days, Chali 2na is in no doubt as to the reasons: “Opportunity…money… egos.” Chali 2na's skills as an MC and his personal integrity are enough to ensure that his show at Fly will be something worth checking out.

Taking It Back To School

5 sep

celebrate the end of the summer holidays with a back to school themed party at ozone where you should break all the rules

eptember is here and for the younger amongst us that only means one thing - back to school. Of course, just because the kids are dragging their feet doesn’t mean those for whom school is just a hazy memory can’t relive those glory days of hanging out by the bike sheds, mooning after their high school crushes and all the other teenage dramas that meant so very much to us back then. “Why so?”, I hear you ask. Well, those cheery guys at Ozone have decided to celebrate the end of summer with a Back to School Party. They promise some energetic beats from resident DJ, the appropriately named Mistrezz C, as well as a night of ‘high school shenanigans’ to kick off the weekend at 490 metres in the air. They'll be dressing up the chic bar in the clouds in school decoration,

s

which presumably means some bunting, a bunch of trophies and a strong smell of bleach. But it won't just be the bar that'll be dressed up for the night. For those lucky, lucky few who still fit in their school uniforms, and more bizarrely have kept them, Ozone promises free entry as well as free ‘Back to School’ shots. Let’s just say I wish I’d gone to a school that provided shots on the first day. However, if, like me, a 28 inch waist seems like the stuff dreams are made of, then you’ll just have to fork out a very affordable $150 on the door, which includes one drink. So, if you like to dress up in school uniform (and having been here during Hallowe’en I know that’s no small number in Hong Kong) or like to see others do so, make sure you head over to Ozone for some seriously high-altitude shenanigans.

SOHO, City of Dreams Macau

A City Within a City food-lovers will be spoilt for choice in city of dreams' new gastrodome ong Kong’s Soho has long been notorious for a barrage of world cuisines all jumbled up under a few quaint little lanes. London’s Soho is, of course, notorious for other things, but there’s also no shortage of excellent dining spots among its not so much quaint as seedy alleyways. And, of course, New York’s SoHo is an upscale luxe haven for overpriced art galleries and even more overpriced boutiques. So it’s no surprise that Macau also wants in on the Soho action. Of course, things work a little differently in magical Macau, so this Soho is indoors for a start. Located conveniently round the corner from Club Cubic in the City of Dreams complex, this Soho, or rather SOHO, is a dense complex of actually pretty amazing restaurants, catering to all tastes. Japanese, Korean, Cantonese, Italian, and Mexican establishments compete for your casino winnings. There’s great seafood with both a Gold Coast Oyster Bar as well as a separate Lobster Bar, if oysters are too common for you. If you can’t tear yourself away from the Test Match, there’s a sports bar. But for me, the real draw will be a branch of Chan Kee Roast Goose, the Hong Kong based roast goose restaurant that’s been going since the 50s which sells up to 2,000 geese a day. The decor has been based loosely on the other Sohos around the world,

with brick wall facades and a ‘streetstyle’ vibe. They even had famed UK street artist D*Face come in to do a mural, as well as a host of local street artists both from Hong Kong and Macau who have dotted the space with original art. With 16 venues scheduled to be open in total and serving till 2am every night, it’ll perfect for that latenight lobster platter if you’re just tripping out of Cubic or a fortunestimulating hearty dinner before you hit the craps table.

Compuphonic At The Mira

The Mira's 5th Birthday Bash To celebraTe Their 5Th birThday, The mira hong kong inviTes you To parTy wiTh Them Till The early hours aT vibes and room one

utdoor venues don’t get much better than Vibes at The Mira Hong Kong. So it’s not surprising that the hotel is holding its fifth birthday party there. A secret haven among the bustle of Tsim Sha Tsui, Vibes is one of those places you almost don’t want to tell people about in case it gets over-run. That said, you’ll definitely want to tell everyone about their birthday party this month. Quite aside from the beauty of dancing all night in the open air, they’ve brought in Belgian wunderkind DJ Compuphonic for the night. Born Maxime Firket, the Liège native started off studying music theory and classical music at the Academy, and in fact studied the cello. Before long, he discovered Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode which led him to start creating some mixes. The young DJ soon made a name for himself in Brussels, and became resident DJ in one of Brussels’ best clubs, Dirty Dancing, which meant his tracks quickly gained recognition amongst the region’s trend-setters. Soon, he was being remixed by the likes of Bangkok Impact and Spirit Catcher. As if that wasn’t enough, Tiga himself decided to release his EP Emotion on his own Turbo Recordings label, further cementing the young musician’s reputation. Perhaps most famed for his 2012 maxi-single ‘Sunset’, which has

O

garnered over five million views on YouTube, the young Belgian will bring his hedonistic house to Vibes. As if that wasn’t enough though, Compuphonic will be supported by Cliché Records’ Amedei. And the party will move indoors after 11pm to The Mira’s Room One club where Compuphonic will carry on until the wee hours. Oh, and to celebrate their birthday, if you buy a ticket online, they’ll be giving away a bottle of Perrier-Jouët champagne to every fifth ticket purchased. So I guess that means you’ll just have to get five tickets for you and your friends.

Ultra Music Festival Japan

sep

tHe biggest dance party in tHe world is coming for tHe first time to toKyo - get ready to dance hoooo! The international dance music machine known as the Ultra Music Festival is landing in Tokyo for the first time this September! Taking place over two days in Odaiba, the party promises the biggest names in dance and EDM: Axwell, Ingrosso, Steve Angello (all ex Swedish House Mafia), Hardwell, Kaskade, and Darren Emerson to name just a few of the massive line-up. They’re expecting 100,000 people over the two days - in fact, the tickets for this inaugural UMF Tokyo were the fastest selling tickets in UMF history worldwide, so there’s clearly going to be a massive number of dance fans to scream along with. Of course, this isn’t UMF’s first foray into Asia. UMF Korea’s been going from strength to strength, again with over 100,000 attendees over two days, an increase of 40,000 from 2013, so clearly Asia’s electronic music and dance fans are growing exponentially in numbers. This year, UMF Korea held the biggest ever pool party with thousands of party-

goers. With Odaiba smack bang in the middle of Tokyo Bay, don’t get all excited and jump into the, ahem, pristine waters of the bay. I doubt they’re insured. If the pictures we’ve seen of UMF Korea are anything to go by, this is going to be one heck of a crazy party, and if you haven’t already got your ticket, beg, steal or buy one online from a ticket tout. Even if you’re not a huge dance fan, the biggest dance party in Asia is happening on your doorstep. You’d be a fool to miss out.

Something sweet happened last month, but you will find yourself actually being in a complicated situation this month. It’s going to be very challenging and require lots of problem solving, and it’s going to make you realize you are actually getting old and becoming a real adult making adult decisions. Live and learn. For better relationship luck you should travel more this coming month. Go somewhere far, if not you can travel to Macau, and wear lots of red.

After feeling unstable and uncomfortable last month, this month isn’t getting that much better but is spiralling down even more. Good news is you will learn how to cope with your bad situation better. You will be better at not being so hard on others, and on yourself. For relationship luck it is quite a heavy and intense month, so if you already have a stable relationship, be careful getting into heated arguments, or throwing a tantrum at your lover over little things.

This is going to be absolutely a great month for you Oxen out there. I can definitely say you need to get yourself ready for a good time. Chinese people always say, “Opportunity knocks at the door only once”, meaning make the best of this chance. For those who don’t have a lover, you will very likely meet the man or woman of your dreams. So remember to dress sharp, in colours like red and orange, and hang out in new places, for example if you always hung out in central LKF, it is good for you to try TST, or CWB.

Congrats again Dragon folks! Your good luck keeps coming, whether it’s work, relationship, money or health! You will also be hearing some very good news from your family, creating even more positive energy. To have a good time you must go out by 11pm, and feel free to stay out as late as you want this month. You will be running into many old friends you haven’t seen in a long time! Try partying in Tsim Sha Shui this month, and wear more silver or golden items, this will bring you really good luck.

Last month was full of change, which is leading to a very stable month for September! You will feel a lot happier and healthier, and could potentially hear some good news, especially on the relationship side. But pay more attention with work. You will tend to make small mindless mistakes. “No zuo, no die” is a new Chinglish phrase meaning if you don’t do anything stupid, it won’t come back and bite your ass. Go party in Wan Chai for a good time, and wear some dark colours for good luck.

This month you will be experiencing some changes. You will most likely hear from a co-worker or a boss that you will be heading for a promotion, or movements that you had always looked for. Be careful feeling uncomfortable from eating something bad during a night out. If you didn’t feel like eating it anyways, don’t force yourself, this is probably your body warning you! For a good night out you must go out by 10pm, and wear silver or gold items, this is going to bring you much better luck especially in your relationship!

There’s a saying that “seeing for oneself is better than hearing from others”, meaning not to take things as truth when you hear them, but check it before you believe it. After a good month in August, you will be having an exhausting month in September. This is especially for work, as you will need to spend a lot of effort doing something right, feeling like you can’t depend on anyone else! But relationship-wise you will be getting a lot of good news, and hearing some good news from your lover, giving you the surprise of your life. contemplating, especially for one of the original synth-pop acts. Bursting on the scene when other similar acts dominated the charts, such as Gary Numan and The Human League, it’s testimony to their creativity and originality that 30 years on, Pet Shop Boys’ latest album Electric went straight to number 3. Pioneers of rumbling 80s synth, which sits underneath their 30 years of material like a psychedelic tattoo, Tennant and Lowe have released 40 Top 20 singles and 22 Top 10 hits in the UK. With a twelfth album released in 2013, they don’t appear to have an end in sight.

tennant’S lyriciSm iS renowned for caSting out a certain PoeticiSm and learnedneSS [that] rideS over conformiSt muSic. The question is: how have they managed it? Pet Shop Boys have faced obstacles that might have ruined their career had they lacked the right approach. Perhaps the largest challenge was their shortlived success in the US, which declined rapidly in the late 80s and early 90s after a series of creative decisions that did not sit well with US critics. Wearing tuxedos on the cover of Actually in 1987 - when rock music materialised itself in bejewelled leather and tattered denim - marked the beginning of their decline in the US, after a stint of top ten hits. Controversially presenting homoerotic subtexts in music videos, and with Tennant coming out as gay to a then hugely discriminatory nation, pushed them even further out of America’s mainstream vein. Meanwhile in the UK and Europe, Pet Shop Boys continued to dominate the charts. That kick of rebellion was something the protest-fuelled UK embraced. As Lowe put it in an interview: “To

Americans, pop or rock music is not about enjoyment. English music is about excitement and enjoyment and the thrill of the whole thing.” Tennant’s lyricism is renowned for casting out a certain poeticism and learnedness which, although riding over largely conformist music, is often politically recalcitrant. The US might have overlooked the British cynicism in lines such as “Our gain is your loss, that’s the price you pay; I heard it in the House of Commons: everything’s for sale”, misinterpreting the song title ‘Shopping’ as trivial and one-dimensional. By incorporating political digs and sophisticated literary references with easy access dance songs and love songs, Pet Shop Boys allowed themselves to keep a firm reputation in both alternative and mainstream circles. In a western world of materialism and visual extravaganza, perpetuating mainstream success has a lot to do with image – something Pet Shop Boys have always been serious about. Tennant and Lowe have gone

through two famous transformations: the first in 1993 after a short break, where they replaced their black and white tuxes for avant-garde, brightly coloured costumes. The second came when both reined in their late 90s’ peroxide spiked haircuts for understated attire with the release of eighth album Release in 2002. Nowadays you will find them in modern - almost futuristic designer suits, Lowe still donning an air of composed chic behind retro sunglasses. Expanding on visual allure, Pet Shop Boys have always been selective with artwork and performance visuals, collaborating with established artists to create minimal yet intricately designed album covers and theatrical live shows. Their first ever tour stopped off in Japan and Hong Kong, wowing Asia with breathtaking projections and glitzy costumes. An established name on the music scene can only take artists’ work so far, as seen in the flopped albums of behemoths we once believed would never cease to impress. Tennant and Lowe have pushed through that barrier by riding an unyielding wave of innovation, exploring a prism of concepts along the way; the staple Pet Shop Boys pop cleverly grounded in each album despite the metamorphosis. As Tennant told The Guardian in 2011,

“When you have a long career like ours, you have to keep things fresh.” The duo immediately impressed making unashamed disco references in debut album, Please, to a world where disco music had died in the 70s. And so they continued, from the trancey depths of Nightlife (1999) and the soft rock breezes in Release (2002) to the shadowy Elysium and 2013’s Electric, which hones in on the cutting edge, with grimier club music effects and rapper Example featuring on track ‘Thursday’. Pet Shop Boys most famously collaborated with Dusty Springfield on track ‘What Have I Done to Deserve This’ in 1987 album Actually, before producing her own album in return. As the years have progressed, the pair has collaborated with acts like Kylie Minogue, Liza Minelli, Johnny Marr, Robbie Williams, David Bowie and Lady Gaga (among many, many others) - even writing Girls Aloud ballad ‘The Loving Kind’ in 2009 - proving themselves two of the world’s most sought after producers and songwriters. This is similarly seen in acts like Coldplay, a band that has monopolised the spotlight for so long purely by keeping in tow with musical trends. Switching from iconic guitar-powered balladry to synthetic stadium pop - and collaborating with names like Rihanna - has more or less assured them spots in the Top 10 over the last five years. But unlike Coldplay’s sad lack of versatility, Pet Shop Boys abound in it. Winners and nominees of countless awards, including Grammys, Brits and Ivor Novellos, Pet Shop Boys have combined image, innovation and stunning musicianship to rule the world. Catch one of the most influential bands ever on their Electric Tour at AsiaWorldExpo on the 26th as they stop off in Hong Kong for the third time.

Secret Island Party

The Secret’s Out one of hong kong’s most unforgettable experiences, secret island party, is back for its fourth edition and it’s bigger than ever

022

BOOM MAGAZINE

nless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ll have heard of the worst kept secret in Hong Kong, the Secret Island Party. The weekend-long festival is back this October for its fourth edition and it’s bigger than ever. Set on a secret (of course) island in the Hong Kong archipelago, revellers are told to turn up at a certain time at a pier where a boat will whisk them off to a two-day music and art-filled frolic far away from the madding crowds of Central. We had a chat with Rachel Frost, the creative spark behind the whole thing. “Secret Island Party was a bit of an accident,” she admits. “I used to work in events in Manchester and I had my own festival there. But I came to Hong Kong to take a break from events and just chill out for a year. One holiday weekend, I got a bunch of friends together and we decided to go on an adventure. So I typed in yoga, camping, retreat etc and out came this page that was all in Chinese, but I could see some English words saying yoga, paddleboarding and stuff. So that’s where we ended up going!” They were met at a pier in Cheung Chau where a small boat then took them onto the tiny island where she now organises Secret Island. “There was nothing and noone there. It was like a ghost town.” But the beauty and the isolation convinced the seasoned events planner that it was the perfect place to hold a party. If you went to the first Secret Island Party, you might have seen her hawking tickets around Central. “I was selling these little treasure map style tickets outside Marks & Spencer

U

and H&M. We sold 500 tickets that first time, and we were dumbstruck. So we did it again 6 months later and we sold 900 tickets. Then the last one we did, well I really stepped it up and turned it into a proper festival, with proper sound equipment, staging and food. And that’s where we are today.” This Secret Island Party is even bigger, with a huge line-up of acts, both DJs and live musicians. But quite aside from that, the real treat is in all the entertainment she’s lined up. There’ll be actors dotted around the island, interacting with you, hauling you off to jail (don’t worry, the jail’s a club with a DJ). There’ll be secret gigs hidden in the jungle (courtesy of the Bunker Crew). There’ll be artwork and art workshops throughout the weekend - even a washing line where you can hang up art you’ve created and swap it for other people’s art, if it takes your fancy. The theme this year is ‘Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves’, which is pretty glorious for those who like to dress up. According to Rachel, “You should sort out your fancy dress, because if you’re there wearing jeans and a t-shirt, you’re actually going to stick out!” There will, of course, be prizes for the best dressed. She stresses, though, that it’s no rave. Families and children are more than welcome, and Sunday in particular has been programmed to be a chilled day out. If you’re unsure what to bring, check out our handy guide overleaf. Secret Island Party is only a boat-ride away, but for one special weekend in the concrete jungle, you’ll feel like you’re in paradise. Tickets available at www.hushup.hk.

erhaps it all began at the roller disco. Alongside her friend, mentor, and fellow DJ, Wendy Wenn, Ocean caught the bug and glimpsed the future: loud music and writhing bodies in a dark room. “I get very emotional about it,” she says over a beer at The Black Star in Sheung Wan. “I forget everything and put all of myself into the music. It’s only a few hours, but through it you can escape from everything.” At high school Ocean fell into reggae, as well as the requisite Cantopop and indie bands of the day including Garbage and Oasis (whose concert she attended on her own because none of her friends wanted to go). Even so, she began her music career late - in around 2008 to precise - with a set at the fabled Yumla. This is somewhat surprising given her entrenched popularity here in Hong Kong. It feels like she’s been around for longer, which is a sign of her skills as a DJ and her humble approach to her craft. The pivotal moment came when she saw John Digweed play at the Regal Hotel in TST; the mass of people and the intense sound resonated strongly. From there she went to club nights at C-Top and other joints around town. She then met Jay Forster, one of the cofounders of Clockenflap, ‘who made a big impression on [her]’, while at the same time Wendy was dating Brandon Ho, aka Ghost Style from

Ocean在中學時已鍾情於雷鬼音 樂、廣東歌及地下樂團——包括Garbage 及Oasis(因為沒有同學願意去,她便一 個人去了他們的演唱會)。

“iT’S Only a few hOurS [when i dj], buT ThrOugh iT yOu can eScape frOm everyThing.”

24Herbs, and it was at their apartment that she learned how to use a mixer and turntables for the first time. “If you don’t practise, you’ll never make it,” she says plainly. And it’s precisely that attitude that has brought her to where she is today. Over the past six years she has played at virtually every club in town, launched the successful Humdrum night, as well as the all-female Foxtrot, and supported some of the best international DJs: Dirt Crew, Dave DK, and Efdemin. More recently, she has been invited to play in Europe – with gigs in Sweden, Germany, and Belgium. “Playing there has definitely helped me because you have to work harder for the crowds,” she says. “They expect more, and you can go deeper.”

She has also turned her hand to producing. To date, she’s had releases on Yumla Records, and a new track ‘Perfect Dream’ is out this month on Typhoon8. She says she started mixing minimal Techno because it was easier, and then spent a few years immersed in the tech-house scene, which later became the sound of the city. More recently she has begun incorporating classic house and minimal Techno back into her sets, as well as getting into garage and 2-step at the Hummingbird nights. As for the forthcoming Secret Island Party, she is excited to return for a second year in a row: “It’s a really special event. The sound is perfect, the atmosphere is cool, in the jungle, and there are no bugs!”

Crew、Dave DK、Efdemin

ulti-instrumentalists are a rare breed, but Les Gromechkos, a Hong Kong-based ska rock gypsy-punk band, is full of them, making them a remarkably talented bunch. They met up almost a decade ago, when as young French expats they found themselves a little disappointed by the music on offer then. In true Hong Kong style, it was only after they ended up going to karaoke that they realised they had some good singers in the group, which led them to think about starting a band. Mixing ska with rock, gypsy and punk isn’t the most obvious musical style, but it certainly sets them apart. “We wanted to find a niche where we’d have no competition!” jokes Nicolas. But in truth, from the start, certain members of the band were defiant about not playing covers, and so everything they play is an original composition. “The musical styles we incorporate come from the music that we listened to growing up in France,” they explain, “and then we

blend in ideas from classical piano or flute, for instance. We also play hip-hop as well, though, since our accordionist used to be in a hip-hop band.” In fact, one of their definite crowd pleasers involves Nicolas beatboxing on his flute. The story behind their name is as charming as the guys themselves. “The first time we met up, we didn’t know what to play, so we started playing the theme tune to this game show we used to watch as kids, Des Chiffres et Des Lettres, whose presenter is a guy called Laurent Romejko. So we decided to call ourselves Les Gromechkos, in tribute to the presenter!” Despite holding down very important jobs in the financial sector, the guys recently released their first album, Hong Kong Tales, and have been busy performing, for instance playing at Clockenflap last year. They’re hot off their first Pearl River tour, taking in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, but you can catch them at Secret Island Party this October.

ost-punk electronica is a lot of fun. Which is why a Dr Eggs gig is so much fun. And they look really good. Joul is the lead singer, originally from France, and his guitarist, bassist and drummer are all local Hong Kong girls. If you go to any live gigs in the city, you’ll have seen them around. Joul moved here from France about 10 years ago, but was surprised to discover that Hong Kong’s music scene in 2004 was more like Paris in 1984. “When I was looking for band members, I wanted to start playing this punk electronic stuff that I’d been doing in France, but I got so many guys who would only want to play Nirvana. It took me about two to three years to find the right people!” As their manager as well, Joul has stylishly hustled and, looking at their tour calendar, they must be one of the most sought after, and busy, working bands in Hong Kong today. Between now and December, they’ve got 10 tour dates in Taiwan, Réunion, Madagascar, Korea, the Philippines and China. They’ll also be at Secret Island Party this October. With the experience they have touring Asia, they have nothing but good words to say about their audiences. “When we play in China, Taiwan, even Nepal, the audiences are so good. They’re really openminded, they love to discover our sound and they really get into it.” So much so that they always manage

You know, in China, they could easily just download our songs free, but it’s great to feel that the audience gets what you’re trying to do.” Of course, they’re veterans of the Hong Kong scene, but while they certainly have their fans, they have become sanguine about the city’s lack of interest in live music for the most part. “You know, people here they don’t mind spending $1000 on drinks in some club, but $100 to see a live band in an underground venue? Not so much.” But with their unflagging enthusiasm and stage energy, Dr. Eggs are better than club night.

FAD

SSS: I know that you’re a founding member of [drum’n’bass crew] HEAVY, why another unit? FUNN: I started HEAVY alongside Lai Fai (aka BloodDunza) in 2006, and we mainly focused on drum’n’bass, dubstep and more recently reggae. Then in 2011 when I was planning on producing shows for my own band, Tuesday Morning Surfing Club, I figured out I could also help promote local and overseas live acts, hence Trenchtown. SSS: How would you define Trenchtown? FUNN: Although the word Trenchtown is usually associated with reggae, I’m not trying to focus on any one genre. Instead, I’m hoping to create more cross-genre events. You see, I started out in bands and eventually got introduced to dance music. My musical horizon expanded with that, and I still think of that as an experience that’s very precious to me. That’s why a lot of Trenchtown events are intended to break boundaries, combining audiences from different genres, for instance Vintage Canto-Pop Nights and Alternative Rock Parties.

New Youth Barber shop

ni.ne.mo

格」才是我真正目標。因為我本身來自所 謂的「BAND界」再跳到「PARTY界」;

SSS: You’ve just wrapped up Endless Summer 2014, your annual concert event. How was it? FUNN: It’s already our 4th anniversary, after our humble start in 2011. I decided to base the whole event in Fringe Club , which is where I was introduced to the local scene back in the day. This year we expanded into a mini-festival format, with a string of events including a TOP CAT dj night and a big finale with 8 bands at the Fringe. Although it was a huge amount of pressure, I’d say I’m pretty happy with the result. SSS: Where do you think Trenchtown is heading? FUNN: Keep on moving, getting better and better. I’d love to do some artbased projects as well.

Review: Roland TR-808/909 & TB-303 oland, the company responsible for the original TR-808/909 and TB-303, finally released some new gear based on the original designs. We were lucky enough to take the TR-8 and TB-3 out for a joyride, both in studio and during our warm up set at CHK CHK CHK live in HK 2014:

Sound: Mostly clean/raw drum machine tones you get from a modern Roland. The comp knob on the TR-8 fits the tone into anything quite easily. TB-3 also does it well in the ACID territory. Control: Both units focus on live performance, with most controls you need on the front panel. But the real

surprise comes in when I plug in the unit via USB. Not only you can get USB midi but also 12 tracks of digital audio. The instant multitracking is a joy to use, allowing you to punch in patterns via the sequencer and tweak it in your DAW later on. The MIDI is a bit tricky, as not much is labeled on that thin piece of paper they call a manual. Luckily someone wrote a maxforlive patch that accesses most parameters so if you’re on Ableton Suite, you should be covered. Conclusion: Terrific as an add-on to a live/ DJ rig. The core value of are the sequencer and tactile controls, so by syncing it to your DJ software, you should be rocking the stage in no time. (Special thanks to Tom Lee Music)

alk into KEE Club on a Friday evening, and you’ll be entranced by the east-meets-west atmosphere of the interior decor as you absorb the ambient live music. Like the crossroads of cultures capturing the essence of Hong Kong, KEE Club is a place for the worldly, where its members can consume the finest of arts, music, food, and lifestyle from all over the map. For outsiders, it’s just an exclusive club. But to private members, KEE Club serves as a home away from home, a sanctuary from the whirlwind of city life. And what better way to stir up nostalgic feelings of home than through the flavors in the kitchen? Cue in Michelin-rated Executive Chef Roland Levy Schuller, whose arrival into the KEE Club scene a few months ago has transformed the overall dining experience to prompt this desired effect.

W

A world renowned cook, Chef Roland has made his culinary imprint in cities like Rome, Paris, Nice and now, the Far East. Hong Kong, a place of ephemeral delights, requires constant reinvention and creativity to stay relevant, to which Chef Roland responds by promoting food rich in nutritional benefits. With a Chinese dim sum menu for lunch followed by a Modern European cuisine for dinner, dishes parallel KEE Club’s cosmopolitan vibe, but with a healthy spin. Bringing in a taste of rustic fine dining is Chef Roland’s signature, emphasizing a remarkable quality over quantity (for instance, using organic tomatoes flown over from Sicily). Collaborating with his team of Chinese chefs and the organic vegetable distributor ecoFarm, he has raised the bar for other kitchens by sourcing the highest-grade organic elements for both menus.

Chef Roland’s talent ensures each bite is filled with an incomparable craftsmanship of textures and taste. Dim sum, Hong Kong’s ultimate comfort food, is MSG-free and includes organic vegetables, making it a sought-after meal by the healthconscious. The evening menu, which includes a fusion of Italian and Mediterranean dishes, is filled with seasonal features that will allow for changes every few months. His inspiration to create derives from simplicity, his method is to focus on one staple ingredient and then developing a meal around it.

TurNTABlEs

Like his ingredients, his plating techniques also mirror the changing seasons. Springtime overlays are colorful, while the summertime dishes include hints of fruit and summer vegetables. Stay tuned for next season’s coverings, which will be heavy on the mushrooms. The transition to healthy dining didn’t happen overnight. Rather, it spawned as a result of Chef Roland’s own health deterioration a few years ago, a feat he overcame through eating organic foods. Today, the chef is paying it forward by advocating firmly for organic consumption, a definite nod to today’s more health-conscious patrons. As he himself admits, “With the amount of attention that today’s chefs receive from the general public, we have a responsibility to help change people’s eating habits.”

In a city where food quality assurance is questionable at best, Chef Roland takes care of KEE members by sourcing food free from chemicals, which he isn’t afraid to say is a bit of a challenge in Hong Kong. “I feel very passionately about raising awareness about the benefits of organically grown ingredients and steering people away from genetically modified food or produce grown in soil with toxic residues.” Although Chef Roland doesn’t have a favorite dish, he swears by tomatoes, an ideal component for its sweetness and acidity. Ask the KEE members what their favorite dish is, and most likely they’ll tell you about the linguine served with Canary Island red prawns, a rich and flavorful red prawn sauce, organic date tomatoes and dried capers from Southern Italy.

dBridge

The Midnight Music Man By the early 2000s dBridge had cemented himself as one of the world’s most original drum’n’Bass producers, and has since gone on to explore other realms of electronic music, writes oliver clasper. hen the late Gil ScottHeron challenged the trend for pigeonholing music or putting it into compartments, he called what he made ‘midnight music’. “We call it the first minute of the new day. And we badly need some first day music,” he said. dBridge is a natural continuation of all of this: a man who makes midnight music. Earlier this year dBridge launched a new six-part podcast series alongside Instra:mental’s Kid Drama called Heart Drive. Trying to secondguess or explain what genre of music they play on the show is fruitless, and that’s the point - as White says over the phone from London: “The problem with new sub-genres is not only are they given labels which can be restrictive, but people start to reverse engineer it and think that it has to be this kind of sound with these kind of drums for it to officially be the genre they think it is, when in reality music doesn’t always work like that. In terms of Heart Drive, we don’t see it as a sub-genre of drum’n’bass. When we approach people to make music for it, it’s usually people who have nothing to do with d’n’b. I want to see what Techno artists are doing

W

- like Deep Child and South London Ordnance.” Darren White grew up between London and the Malvern countryside, falling in love with music through his older brother Steve (aka Steve Spacek, the highly underrated singersongwriter). “He always was, and still is, my biggest influence - vocally and musically. We went down very different paths, but if there were times I was doubting what I was doing, or falling out of love with drum’n’bass, he’d be the voice of reason and tell me to take a break from that sound and produce something different.” By the early 90s White was witnessing the birth of jungle, and by 1995 had begun producing music of his own - releasing the single ‘Let That Shit Ride’. Not long after he teamed up with DJ Maldini and formed Future Forces Inc., but the real breakthrough came in 1998 when the two joined forces with Fresh and Vegas to form the legendary Bad Company. The foursome put out some of the most arresting music of that era, with their single ‘The Nine’ being voted by Knowledge magazine readers as the greatest d’n’b track of all time. But as much as White enjoyed collaborating, he admits that it was rarely a smooth ride, and by 2004 Bad Company had split up. For White it came as a relief. Towards the end of their time together he had begun to feel distant from the others, both personally and creatively, and disgruntled with the direction the music was going. Many readers may be aware that Fresh has since become one of EDM’s biggest stars,

making catchy dance music for the masses. “I sent him a message to say I was proud of him because I knew all along that that was what he wanted to achieve,” White says. “But it doesn’t mean I have to like his music.” In the aftermath of the breakup White admitted to feeling lost, but almost out of nowhere he started Exit Records - which is still going strong today. His production output and style also began to change as he started to explore different tempos and rhythms within drum’n’bass. More importantly still was that he had started to sing on his records, beginning with featuring on ‘These Words’ from Martyn’s excellent Great Lengths LP and continuing through to his debut album, Gemini Principle, in 2008. According to the man himself it’s something he is keen to explore more on the follow-up LP. Not long ago White wrote an open letter about Spotify, which he saw as a major threat to the way music is consumed and purchased. When challenged about it during the interview it was clear that he had changed his tune. “I got a Spotify Premium account with my new phone, tried it properly for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. Suddenly I could access all this great music, and discover new stuff. Besides, if all my music is up on YouTube for free - and often at low quality – then it didn’t make sense for it not to be on Spotify where the quality is high. It was a no-brainer.” But when it comes to illegal downloading, he says the effort just simply isn’t worth it (‘a real ballache’, to be specific). Besides, since he started to self-distribute his records business has improved, so it’s happy days at Exit HQ.

“I sent a message to [dj fresh] to say I was proud of hIm. But It doesn’t mean that I have to lIke hIs musIc.” As for what the future will bring, it’s hard to know what to expect with dBridge. In the past year he has released Techno under his Velvit moniker, and needless to say, the split 12” ‘Nudge/The Act’ is one hell of a release. “I think I just started to feel comfortable enough to put them out. I’m quite honest about the fact that I’m quite naïve to the scene. I can critique d’n’b because I know structurally how it works, and I know what I like in house and Techno, but when I write it sometimes I have trouble working out how it is. I don’t know all its subtleties.” And when it comes to his set in Hong Kong, expect the unexpected. But one thing we do know is how not to behave on the night. Don’t ask him to play ‘The Nine’, for starters. “To be honest, the crowds are getting younger and I’m getting older,” he says before hanging up. “It’s nice to play to older crowds that aren’t sticking their phones in my face or telling me to ‘play harder’.” Magnetic Soul 9 Year Anniversary x dBridge, XXX, 20th September 2014.

With the upheaval that the industry has faced this past decade due to the the Internet, the question many artists are asking themselves is: do the major labels still add value to an artist’s exposure?

l

In the past, a record deal was one of the few ways for an unknown artist to gain exposure. Sure, they’d have to be talent-spotted, but once signed, the label would pay for marketing, for production, for recording and help get the artist off the ground. That said, throughout music history, there have been disaffected artists, unimpressed by their label’s management of their careers. From Sex Pistols back in 1977, through Michael Jackson and Nelly and even Kelly Clarkson and OK Go!, the story of bands and solo artists wanting out from their contracts is long and complicated.

Perhaps one of the most famous cases is that of André Romelle Young, aka Dr Dre. When he realised his label, Ruthless Records, was profiting from ownership rights to his music, and paying him only for the value of his initial contract, he got the help of Marion Hugh ‘Suge’ Knight Jr, who was wounded in a gun-fight outside the MTV Video Music Awards in August this year, stormed into a board meeting of Ruthless Records with a gang of men wielding pipes and baseball bats. Row Records, only to see Dre walk away again, citing mismanagement issues. Dre set up a precedent for other artists like 50 Cent, who not only wanted to perform, but to create their own recording label. Of course, record companies generally don’t shout about artists leaving them. It not only looks bad on them, but it sends out a bad signal to unsigned bands. In the words of Casey Rae from the Future of Music Coalition, an organisation specialising in music industry education, “Maybe it makes sense to sign you, get you under contract and keep you off the

streets so nobody else has you. But they don’t care if they do anything with you.” This is quite a strong statement, but it’s a fact that record labels are often too concerned with managing earnings from their current crop of stars to spend too much time nurturing the stars of tomorrow. A case in point that has been hitting the headlines this year has been the explosive disintegration of the relationship between Universal Music and Azealia Banks. Propelled to stardom off her debut single ‘212’ in 2011, she has yet to release her longawaited album, even though the

rumour-mill has been in overdrive about when it will finally drop. She’s deluged the Internet with heavyhanded Twitter comments about her label, and in an interview in the Guardian this year she railed, “I’ve been gratefully riding off of mix-tape fumes for the past two years, but my fans really need some new music. Universal needs to just hand me over to another label who knows what to do with me. I’m tired of having to consult a group of old white guys about my black girl craft. They don’t even know what they’re listening for or to.” In early July, she announced that she had finally been released from her contract with Universal. It’s not just the major labels that come under fire. Childish Gambino, the rap alter ego of actor and writer Donald Glover, fell out with indie rock label Glassnote Records. The premise for Glassnote was explained by founder Daniel Glass as “a heaven for rock bands and artists that appreciate a group of people that

support them on the road and when they tour.” Unfortunately, despite being a rap pioneer by signing with Glassnote, it seems that Glover wasn’t impressed when Glassnote mishandled his project. He took to Twitter to vent his frustration, “I don’t like record companies, but I’m not having another project go through this. I’m trying to create one of the more imaginative roll-outs, but other people’s lust for money and impatience is ruining it.” He even went so far as to ask someone to buy him out of his contract. Artists have always complained about their record labels, whether it’s due to creative stifling, greed or ‘old white guys’ not understanding the music. But in today’s age, where mixtapes and tracks proliferate online, it’s interesting to see where this will take the record industry. A latecomer to the digital age, it’s clinging onto worn-out business practises, but if they disappear, who, or what, will take their place?
