Unlike the weather, this city’s heating up. It’s November, which means a lot of things. Firstly, we’re preparing for Clockenflap at the end of the month, and in our Special Feature this issue we chat with Grace from headlining act Clean Bandit (P26). Secondly, we’re beginning to book our Christmas trips, one of which should definitely be to Wonderfruit Festival in Thailand between the 17th and 20th December, where Yasiin Bey, aka, the iconic Mos Def, is set to take over the main stage. We look into his legend in our A-Side this month (P14). All these huge names are heading east, but our city continues to unveil its own talent. We sit down to catch up with Frontyr, last issue’s ‘Hottest HK Band’, to find out a little more about their vision as a newly established electronic trio (P18). Last but not least, we’re getting ready for the cold to kick in, for which we’ve got the perfect gastronomic remedy. In Boom’s Kitchen we tuck into a hearty bowl of Belgian moules-frites, the ultimate winter dish (P34). Meanwhile in Kennedy Town, Casa (P36) invites you to while away the dark hours with its incredibly cheap, wholeheartedly delicious food and cocktails. Over on P32 pro skateboarder Arto Saari gives us tips into photography and skating culture, while Flipside (P22) this month recounts the phenomenon of Japanese street photographer Daido Moriyama, whose work continues to inspire artists of all genres today. To have such a gem perform in our city is quite a privilege; we can imagine this will be a great night of singalongs and tearjerking moments. Japanese-American magician flies into Macau for the second time, with awe-inducing trickery and sense-defying illusions. Wowing audiences around Los Angeles and Japan since the age of 6, Takayama’s shows are known to be quite spectacular - in 2012 he was invited to perform an illusion with Andy Lau at the Miss Hong Kong Pageant, as well as appearing multiple times on MTV programmes and movies. It sort of seems like women’s fashion has been digging around in the attic lately. This year, it’s the boxes of ‘90s junk we once abandoned that are, suddenly, very stylish again. One of the more obvious trends to have dominated the summer and continued into autumn is the choker. Mostly it’s the black plastic chain one that’s seen adorned around the jugular, but if you dig deep down on the Internet there are some styles that balance that ‘rock chick’ look with something a little more glitzy. YASIIN BEY, a.k.a. Mos Def

The Dark Horse of Hip Hop Whether you recognise him from the cinema screen or the stage, yasiin bey has been a figurehead in the world of hip hop and entertainment since the '80S. today, his influence transcends into politics.

ack in its glory days in the late ‘80s and early ’90s, hip hop lyrics focused on the soul of hip hop culture, its origins, and its legacy. Its popularity was led predominantly by De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Da Bush Babees and other members of hip hop collective Native Tongues. Native Tongues continued to follow in the footprints of Afrika Bambaataa and his Zulu Nation, promoting the positive aspects of hip hop culture in their ‘conscious hip hop’. However, major music labels were discovering that hip hop music could, and would, be a multi million dollar industry. The genre was suddenly no longer idiosyncratic of a black subculture. It was turning mainstream. But the culture behind it remained, and artists like Yasiin Bey, aka Mos Def, have lived to keep it alive. A spectator from the beginning, Bey experienced the transition of hip hop and its effects on the industry first-hand. Dropping out of middle school after a childhood of television acting, his teenage years in Brooklyn lay witness to numerous violent crimes, gang shootings, and endless drug-related chaos. All the while he focused on a achieving a career in the theatre, and continued his TV appearances, (one of the more

famous of which was his role as Bill Cosby’s sidekick in The Cosby Mysteries, which aired briefly in 1995). Thanks to his acting career, Yasiin Bey remained famously even-keeled, witness to both perspectives on life. In his years as both a bystander to Brooklyn's underbelly and a rising actor, his acute lyrics rooted. In the mid ’90s his music career officially began. The first hip hop project was called Urban Thermo Dynamics, established with his siblings, before he embarked on a solo career in 1996. It was then that De La Soul and Da Bush Babees took him underwing, requesting that he appear on their records from time to time. His joint album as Black Star with Talib Kweli, Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star in 1998 would become his first critically acclaimed release. When his debut solo album Black on Both Sides was released, it earned a Gold certification, featuring appearances from Q Tip (A Tribe Called Quest) and Busta Rhymes. In the album, Mos Def had asserted a strong instrumental style, mixing groundbreaking lyricism and vintage samples with broad arrangements of live instruments. MOS DEF'S INFLUENCE ON HIP HOP CLEARLY TRANSPIRES THROUGH THE MATERIAL OF KENDRICK LAMAR AND OTHER MODERN SUPERSTARS by a blues rock band, the album pushed sonic boundaries in hip hop, incorporating samples from world music, jazz harmonies, and gritty blues guitars, rhythms and percussion. In hip hop, Mos Def was adventuring further musically than any of his contemporaries. Highly socially aware of black rights and culture, the record explored bolder territory that before - not only musically, but allegorically. Some failed to appreciate the interplay between the 19th century blues (which found its origin in African music and black culture in America's deep South), and Bey’s contemporary social commentary on black rights. Although for those who did, he had firmly found his place on their list of idols. Mos Def formed a reputation as one of the most grounded, forwardthinking MCs of the decade. Although he never focused on selling records and consciously making a name for himself, Bey found his way onto the celebrity A-list through his involvement in Hollywood. With famous appearances in Brown Sugar (2002), The Italian Job remake (2003), The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005) and Cadillac Records (2008) (to name just a few), Bey won five Black Reel Award nominations, an Emmy Award nomination and in 2005, a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in Something the Lord Made (2004). With his third and fourth albums, True Magic in 2006 and The Ecstatic in 2009, Bey became more and more involved in social and political activism. Musically, he began to work more closely with contemporary artists of all genres. He appeared on Kanye West material, including his album College Dropout, and

collaborated with The Black Keys and Gorillaz on various projects. But as ever, his priorities lay in using his power to voice his societal concerns. In 2006, Bey set up an impromptu performance at the VMAs protesting President Bush’s slow reaction towards helping victims in the New Orleans hurricane the year before. He was arrested, but proudly refuses to apologise, particularly after experiencing passive police brutality in the process of his arrest. He has often thrown fundraising concerts to aid world disasters, such as the Gulf oil spill in 2010. In 2014, he struggled to gain entry back into his own country after ‘force-feeding’ himself in response to the treatment of Muslim prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, (which ultimately led him to cancel a massive US tour). Described within the hip hop scene as a ‘genius’, Yasiin Bey has inspired many figures in mainstream hip hop today. Perhaps the most notable is Kendrick Lamar, who recently cited him as a key influence on his lyrics. ebranding your band is a bold move, but for local trio Frontyr, it seems to be working a charm. Konrad Chan is the creative force behind the ‘indietronic’ group, alongside wife Bena and kindergarten colleague Bill, who joined the band after the couple moved to Hong Kong three years ago. Once known as ‘One Talent’, an indie folk project pursued by Konrad and Bena when they first started playing music together in Vancouver, Frontyr has become a reminder that, sometimes, it’s best to push your boundaries. Drawing influence from Icelandic electro-folk songwriter Ásgeir and Glaswegian synth rock band CHVRCHES, Frontyr’s music is a push and pull between Bena’s catchy, indie vocal lines and Konrad’s rumbling synthbeds, both brought to life by (right-handed) Bill’s embellishments on the (lefthanded) bass. Coordinated through multiple FX pedals, the songs have a progressive sound that’s truly unique to Hong Kong. Their live show spans different genres of composition, ranging from slow-burning electronic studies to slightly poppier, Chet Faker-esque hooks. And talking with the trio over a coffee, you can’t help but feel that absolutely every detail is meticulously crafted. Konrad explains how his approach to songwriting has changed since replacing folk with electronica: “Before I was kind of writing about my life, relationships, faith and all that stuff. Now with electronic music there’s a darker element to it; there’s a stylistic

element to it. In terms of how I write lyrics, I try to make them not so straightforward, more up to interpretation, so that the sound of the words match but don’t distract from the lyrics.” He recalls a childhood replacing computer games with midi sequencing programs. “Nineties music software was my computer game really. So I learned how to do early electronic music.” As such, he has been able to follow a clear cut sonic goal: “I wanted to make Frontyr quite authentic live, instead of just having to press play. I’m drawing influence from the way Ásgeir has a very natural sound with that little bit of off-tilt electronic groove.” A shared talent for creating music on the spot has made Frontyr possible, but the trio has had to make some compromises. According to Konrad, problems largely arise when he can’t transfer the sounds on his computer to live performance. “To be honest, I know exactly what I want, but sometimes I find myself telling [Bena and Bill] to do things that only my computer could do. I have to remind myself that you can’t program a human being who has a certain style, and certain strengths and weaknesses. So I have to learn to let them do their thing, then find something that works together.” As a result, Bena has become more involved in the songwriting process. Interestingly, she takes a methodic approach to writing lyrics for electronic songs: “Right now I’m trying to gain inspiration from pictures and visuals, and then write lyrics about that.”

All three admit that one of the tougher challenges has been adapting to a live electronic set up. Bill chimes in, “I’m just playing the bass so it doesn’t make too much difference, and Bena’s doing a voice box, but Konrad is doing the bulk of it. He has so much to handle.” Konrad continues, “The thing is, we’re relying on a back up track with a metronome, so if I play a line and I want to loop it, it has to go along with the metronome. There are some songs where we have a gap; there’s some silence in the backing track, so when it comes back in we have to know when to start playing. So we actually play with a click in our ear. There are so many more elements that could go wrong in live electronic music.” Despite its youth, Frontyr has already enjoyed a wide range of shows, often alongside Mexican electronic duo Deer. According to Konrad, they’ve reached the point where they are requested for shows, and no longer need to reach out. And despite his clear talent for songwriting, Konrad humbly attributes their success to their careful rebranding. “I think the idea of changing from One Talent to Frontyr is really helping us gain more of a following. Because if we’re the same acoustic band, we just don’t stand out from the thousands of other acoustic bands. We’ve got that visual branding - people recognise us, and visually we look good.” The band name speaks for itself. “If you searched One Talent,” Konrad continues, “it comes up with anything but us. But Frontyr is easy, it’s recognisable - and it’s not taken up by someone on Instagram! For me it kind of conveys certain images, the sort of stuff you hear in the word ‘frontier’. What I was thinking of was like Canadian explorers, kind of that mysterious wilderness image. I wanted to feel adventure in there.”

Born in Osaka, Moriyama spent most of his career wandering the streets of Shinjuku in Tokyo with a Ricoh film compact camera, apprehending the atmosphere of the post-war city. His work often depicted prostitutes and members of the Yakuza. His point-and-shoot style of photography became characteristic of his work, capturing the moment rather than trying to manipulate it. In an interview with The Telegraph he said, “For me, photographs are taken in the eye before you’ve even thought what they mean. That’s the reality I’m interested in capturing.” Until very recently, Moriyama’s photos were all in black and white. He is known to have found eroticism in the honesty of monochrome photos, and avoided using colour in case it

The style was an artistic stand against demises in society. At 77 years old, Moriyama continues to create a photographic narrative, inspired largely by Jack Kerouac’s novel, On the Road.

CLEAN BANDIT ne of the names we’re most looking forward to at Clockenflap this year is none other than Clean Bandit, the four-piece from Cambridge, UK, whose hit song, ‘Rather Be’, is now most likely recognisable by at least 50% of the population since its release last year. This year, it won a Grammy award for Best Dance Recording, and for many, it’s ‘that one you sing’ to remind a friend who the band are. But there’s so much more to Clean Bandit. We catch up with strings player Grace Chatto, over a slight lag between Hong Kong and London (where she’s just left a recording session with Labrinth), and chat about their past, present, and sparkling future. “We just got back from Dubai, and before that we were in America for ages,” she tells us. Back from touring almost non stop since their festivalpacked summer in the UK, she sounds relaxed. “It’s nice to be home. We’ve got so many new songs we’re writing at the moment, but they’re all quite sketchy at the moment so we need time to go through them and choose the ones we like the most.” After the release of their debut album

New Eyes last year, it’s a delight to hear the band continues to enjoy a creative stream - and Grace attributes it all to bandmate Jack Patterson: “He’s kind of the creative force behind Clean Bandit. He’s always just got so many new ideas every day.” Grace met Jack and violinist Neil Amin-Smith while studying at Cambridge University. With huge opportunities to support names as big as Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding at the university’s illustrious annual ‘May Balls’, and running a club night at one of the town’s only underground venues, the group made the most of the town’s musical resources. Though at first, Clean Bandit had an extremely different style of music. Whereas now their music is largely electronic, embellished with some string accompaniment, back then it was largely the other way round. “It was already a mix of strings and electronic music, but the strings were much more the focus of the music. Usually it was like classical pieces that we were playing in our string quartet that Jack would hear, then he’d choose which bits he liked and loop them and write beats and bass

“WE NEVER HAD ANY IDEA HOW HUGE [‘RATHER BE’] WOULD BECOME. I DON’T EVEN KNOW HOW MANY VIEWS IT HAS ON YOUTUBE...” lines around them. Some songs were literally just whole pieces of classical music that we wrote songs around. Strings were always the starting point of the song and we would generally just write everything around them. But once we got signed and started recording, we moved away from the classical element.” Very much masters of their own creations, Clean Bandit are known for being very hands on in terms of their image and creative processes – in particular, their music videos. Jack and Grace formed a passion for film when they first met, before heading to Tokyo to follow the story of a sushi chef and turn it into a documentary. Grace describes one of Clean Bandit’s pivotal moments as back in the MySpace days, where “we barely had any views at all on our page. Then we made a music video and put it on YouTube and it got like 100,000 views in a month, which caught the attention of all the record labels, managers, and agents.” Jack and Grace decided to return to Tokyo to create the video for ‘Rather Be’. “That’s got millions of views now, like, I don’t even know

how many,” she laughs, sounding rather stunned. In fact, Grace says the band had no idea whatsoever that ‘Rather Be’ would become so popular. “It actually took ages to make that song. We wrote it about a year before we even thought about who we wanted to have singing it, and what we wanted the recording to be like. People seemed to respond quite well to it at festivals in the UK and stuff so we decided to release it as a single, but we never had any idea how huge it would become.” On the spectacular achievement of winning a Grammy award for the track, Grace says, “it was such an amazing surprise, but I don’t think it really changed the trajectory of the band too much.” With such achievements already under their belt, you’d expect Clean Bandit to be under a lot of pressure to release the next album. But according to Grace, “we’re just writing quite freely and writing whatever we want.” She continues, “Hopefully we’ll have a new album that will come out around summer next year.” In the meantime, catch their energetic live show at Clockenflap on Friday 27th.

On the outer edge of the Spermonde shelf, there are reefs with steep dropoffs and caves, excellent places to spot big fish like sharks and barracuda. Absolutely gorgeous, but much better suited to advanced divers.

A little further away than Samalona Island, Kodengareng Keke island is a tranquil and quiet island with crystal clear water. The reefs are famously beautiful, and the beaches are great for snorkelling and relaxing.

Around 40 mins ride from the port, Samalona island is a quiet and unexploited island with pristine water, clear oceans and soft white sand. There are also guest houses on the island for rental if you would like to stay for a night or two.

Kapuposang is located quite some distance from Makassar, so be sure to save around 1.5 hours to get there by speedboat. It’s located at the edge if the Spermonde shelf and facing the deep water. Here you’ll find thousands of species of colourful fish along with bigger animals such as giant grouper, tuna, stingrays and sea turtles. Also a good place to dive with sharks.

Taking up the sport means you end up travelling all the time and searching for new spots in the city. You always wanna explore. You’ve got to be open minded and look for things. So in that way photography ties in really well with it.” Arto’s exhibition features a wall of his own work, as well as the winners of ’True to This’. A collection of his photos are fierce portraits of icons in skateboarding culture, taken in his own home. He’s one of the world’s leading skateboarders, and now, a high-flying skating photographer with world class streetwear brand Volcom. The Finnish talent is here for an exhibition, namely, the final pieces from Volcom’s ‘True To This’ photography competition, which you might recall from our March issue this year. Photographers of all kinds around the city were called to submit their photos, of music; action sports; anything creative that called close to their hearts. “It’s rad,” Arto says, “to see so many photos from not just skating and surfing but also the arts, and everything that comes from that world. It’s cool that Volcom is so open minded about this side of life. For me at least, skateboarding isn’t just about the tricks; it’s a whole culture, a whole state of being, you know what I mean?” Arto turned pro after entering several European pro skating competitions in ’98, at the age of 16. Instantly, a flurry of US talent agencies and potential sponsors flew him across the pond, to where he would eventually move and become a key competitor for skateboarding company Flip. In 2001, he was awarded the coveted ‘Skater of the Year’ award from Thrasher Magazine. Since the beginning of his career, Arto Saari has been an integral figure to the skating scene - and, increasingly, the action photography and portraiture scene. “When I started travelling a lot with skating, I was really bad at writing so photography became my way of documenting and remembering my experiences. It sort of developed from there.” He continues, “A big part of skating is

BOOM’S KITCHEN t’s November, which means that mussel season is well underway, and we can’t think of a heartier way to enjoy them this winter than in the style of Belgium’s national dish, moulesfrites. Which is why, when we found out Hong Kong’s quintessential Belgian eatery Frites was launching a new venue in Causeway Bay, we just had to go and check it out for ourselves. Serving up an average of 5,000kg of mussels every year over its six locations, Frites sells more mussels than any other restaurant in Hong Kong. And thankfully for our marinière cravings on launch day, they’re absolutely delicious. Mussels are farmed around the world, but for a true European gastronomic experience, Frites’ are directly flown in from the Netherlands, where mussel farming is an historic practise. The mussels you’ll eat at Frites are the very same as those being enjoyed in Parisian cafés, or served in coastal salads on the outskirts of Italy, and the same as those that have been slurped in

Belgium and Germany for over 800 scrumptious years. The mussels themselves are incredibly healthy; proven to be both natural aphrodisiacs and rich in protein, vitamins and Omega-3 fatty acids. For the buttery marinière sauce, in which you’ll often find them, we can’t say the same however, if you’re planning a trip to Frites, it’s probably best you put any calorie-counting on pause. A mixture of white wine, butter, herbs and shallots, marinière makes for a wintery and filling accompaniment to the mussels, also serving as a tasty dip for your frites. Frites’ menu spans all sorts of European comfort food, from indulgent sharing platters of pork knuckle to traditional ‘Good Wife’ half-metre sausages. Our favourite dish (besides the mussels) on the menu is the starter of steak tartare, which was creamy in texture and rich in taste. It whet the tongue perfectly before the main course, (and also worked quite well as a side dish to the mussels). Set

p on Woo Hop Street in Kennedy Town, Casa Tapakaya spreads its arms to welcome in Hong Kong’s alcohol aficionados. Thanks in no small part to its affordability and its proximity to HKU MTR station, the funky new hangout is rapidly becoming the goto place for fusion food, succulent cocktails, and gourmet wines. Entrance to Casa’s underbelly is through the small empty-looking bar at ground level, where you descend some stairs and find yourself inadvertently making a grand entrance. The interior is unexpectedly large, with industrialist piping along the ceiling and rolling wooden tables, accompanied by a symphony of clinking glasses. What strikes you first, though, is the expansive wine list, written in chalk above an open bar and kitchen. Each wine is imported directly from its vineyard, and yet, the drinks at Casa are some of the most affordable in the city. With some of the world’s best wines starting at just $40 a glass and the most expensive at just $70 (we enjoyed a whole bottle of Prosecco

for $190) it’s easy to get swept up in the atmosphere and stumble out at closing time. Casa’s food menu balances Asian fusion with Spanish food, Moroccan food, and beyond, consciously replacing excess salt and oil with worldly herbs and spices. The dishes are mostly small plates or sliders, perfect for sharing at a birthday party or nibbling on over drinks, and include everything from Italian gnocchi, Hong Kong inspired pork belly, Argentinean steak and Jamaican jerk chicken to French asparagus and an ample serving of Egyptian hummus. Casa’s cocktails are mixed to perfection and pair gorgeously with the fusion ood. A plate of the perfectly seared tuna (a Japanese-inspired dish, flecked with Middle Eastern spice) pairs deliciously with a Shamginzu, Prosecco gently mixed with gin and yuzu. A portion of the menu is dedicated to beer and cider cocktails, one of which, the Berraleena, which mixes cider with berries and lime, was incredibly refreshing. Their homemade lemonade (which you can also mix with beer or cider) is to die for, but first it’s worth checking out their regularly updated list of IPAs and draft lagers. The cherry on the cake at Casa is the friendliness of the staff. You’ll find general manager Steve Keys welcoming you upon entry; keen to help you pick out your perfect drink or suggest some small plates to fit your occasion. After leaving pioneering German electro group Kraftwerk, founding member Wolfgang Flür formed Yamo. In 1997 he issued their only album, named Time Pie. Wolfgang has finally released a solo album after 18 years. Eloquence is a collection of all his solo works since 2002. Euro-techno flows through the whole record, from the autobiographical robopop in 'I Was A robot' (also the title of his autobiography), to the Italo-disco styled 'Cover Girl', which recalls Kraftwerk's classic track 'The Model'. Electro-pop songs like 'On The Beam' and 'Pleasure Lane' feature delicate female vocals (the Japanese version of 'Pleasure Lane' is sung by Maki Nomiya from Pizzicato Five). The British downtempo electronica band released their fourth album The Light the Dead See in 2012, featuring lead singer Dave Gahan of legendary UK electronic group Depeche Mode. It is not surprising that Dave Gahan and Soulsavers crossed over to produce Angels & Ghosts. The new artists featured are displayed clearly on the album cover, though the record still carries the same dark cinematic feel heard in the previous project. It revolves more around Gahan's personal style and reveals the roots of blues 'n' gospel, as if Soulsavers have produced his solo album. Hit single 'All of This and Nothing' takes our breath away like a road movie, while 'The Sun' puts us in a spaghetti Western world. (pronounced 'chk chk chk') from California is the best live dance-punk act in years. After experiencing the show, it's impossible to get Nic Offer's showmanship out of your head. Two years after Thr!!!er, !!!'s sixth album As If features Nic Offer in his shorts again in their promotional photos. They're playing the same eclectic dance punk, but this time sound even more upbeat. Highlights are Nic's falsetto in 'All U Writers' the brilliant disco jam 'Freedom! '15' (featuring soulful female vocals) and 'Sick Ass Moon', an R&B song with a hint of house. I especially recommend the superb electro-soul 'Lucy Mongoosey', which depicts a day in a museum. Eighteen year-old Hong Kong indie band Elf Fatima will be releasing their 3rd album I See The Light Before Our Planet Explode in limited vinyl edition. Elf Fatima got rid of their gothica and dark-pop from the past; this album is the conclusion of their journey to moody post-rock. Continuing their post rock legacy, the record is mixed by Canadian Montrealer post-rock legends Godspeed You! Black Emperor alpha Efrim Menuck. The record features six songs ranging from six to eight minutes, all of them dramatic post-rock, spanning everything from calming atmospheres to rumbling landslides. Together on Northern Tower, the members of Stranded Whale prove they’re definitely not just another acoustic band on the Hong Kong scene. The folk rock album combines crisp guitar work, vocal harmonies and gutwrenching lyrics in a way that would make their influences proud. My favourite track has to be 'Release the Swallows', which manages to sound just right in its final recorded form, despite being performed at local venues for a year.

The long-awaited Blaine L. Reininger finally came to perform to his fans based in Hong Kong , at Focal Fair in Causeway Bay on the evening of 22 October. Tuxedomoon is one of my favourite bands. As one of their die-hard fans, I was over the moon to have seen them on stage. It’s been my lifelong dream to see Tuxedomoon’s lead Blaine L. Reininger performing. Not only that, I was extremely honoured to be DJ-ing as their supporting act, providing me with more time to chat with them. In this tour, Reininger partnered and performed with Georgio Valentino as a duo. Georgio is Belgian and is an individual music artist and guitarist. Blaine wore three hats during the performance – a violinist, a guitarist as well as a vocal whereas Georgio focused on playing the guitar. The performance kicks off with Blaine’s violin track ‘Viloas’, followed closely by a collection of his masterpieces including ‘Night Air’, ‘A Café Au Lait For Mr. Mxyzptlk’, ‘Mystery and Confusion’ and ‘Broken Fingers’. Of course he also played his recent hit ‘Noche Lluviosa’ and some tracks from the golden Tuxedomoon time such as ‘Jinx’, ‘Birthday Song’ (he also nailed this in his solo version), ‘Volo Vivace’, ‘What

Use?’ and ‘No Tears’. Having listened to Tuxedomoon and Blaine Reininger for years, I cannot explain how excited I was seeing them play right in front of me. Blaine then gave the stage to Georgio where he showed off as the solo vocalist. Blaine played another solo classic ‘Japanese Dream’ during the encore session - and he touched everyone with his own singing and violin playing over Giorgio’s guitar. It was a shame that Blaine did not play ‘Petite Pièce Chinoise’ (1982). The song has a beautiful Chinese tint to it that probably would have resonated well with the audience. In response to my question whether he would perform this song the night before, he jokingly said that he had decided to perform ‘Kung Hei Fat Choy’ instead. I wouldn’t say the show was exceptionally good, after all, it was a huge waste for such master musician to have to rely on backing track for a live performance. Krooked and CONS pro skater Mike Anderson is one of those who spends the majority of his career on the road in dirty vans, motels, and thousands of long plane rides sitting next to crying babies. So he understands the importance of a loud and comfortable headphone

when you need it the most. Sometimes you need to tune out to stay sane! That’s why he co-started Loud Headphone with photographer David Broach. Besides providing a great way of shutting out surrounding noise, Mike Anderson also wants his brand to connect to the community. When he started doing research for Loud Headphone, he randomly found a video on YouTube showing someone hearing for the first time. He was stoked and inspired by these deaf people who were able to hear again, so when he started Loud Headphone, he integrated a charitable business model and made it the

“Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see.” - René Magritte One day during the summer holiday in 1996, I could not afford to buy a “Wish you were Here” CD , so I borrowed a cassette tape from the local library. I could not describe the tremendous impact on me that day when I reviewed the album artwork. I was totally obsessive about the artwork (though I had no idea then that it was inspired by René Magritte) - where the front cover shows a businessman, literally being burned in a deal. The back cover shows a Magritte type salesman with no wrists and ankles; an empty suit. René Magritte (1898–1967) was a surrealist artist of Belgian

On the Screen THE MARTIAN By: Matt Davis

The Martian sees Ridley Scott returning to space, following the adventures of Mark Watney (Matt Damon) as he’s been stranded on Mars, (which is bad because - and I’ve checked this - it’s pretty far away). Mark therefore has to plan to survive on Mars until he can communicate with NASA or until they decide to visit Mars again. On a planet where life can’t grow (this was made prewater on Mars announcement) this proves a challenge. The main draw of the film seems to be that, instead of showing flashy adventure and escape set pieces in space (a la Gravity), it shows a much more grounded and real adventure. For instance, whereas in other space disaster films the protagonist would most often be hurtling from exploding spaceships to safety, here his primary goal is simply - or not so simply - make water.

With all this science fodder being our hero, which we should, because thrown about, the expectation is he’s stranded on bloody Mars. that this might be a somewhat dry A visually stunning, surprisingly film. Sure, there is some intellectual, funny film with a strong cast - only well researched, slightly-over-my- slightly hindered by its long run time head sciencey stuff going on, but and unnecessarily large character list. it never detracts from the story or the characters. Probably the biggest 《火星任務》 surprise from this film is that it’s 雷利·史考特以火星任務重返太空， hilarious. I always think autumn is the season of love. How perfect it is to enjoy a cup of hot coffee while hugging your lover? In order to increase the sweetness of cuddling, you should remember some of these tips: Moisturising your face It is necessary to double your effort on moisturizing your face in autumn. To me, the indispensable item is not face cream but toner. Toner can soften your skin and enhances skin’s ability to absorb the nutrients of face cream (which we put on afterwards). The Intense Hydrator from Domohorn Wrinkle has always been my favourite toner. Alhough this brand is more for women aged 35 and over, it is lovely to use in Autumn - even for young girls in their 20s. The texture is thick, however, simply pat it on your face with your warm palms and your skin will absorb it easily.

Nourishing your lips You want your lover to feel your soft lips when kissing, right? You definitely have to nourish your lips. Wet your lips, add some sugar into Vaseline, rub it onto your lips in circular motion and then wash it with water. After that, apply Laneige lips mask on your lips, and plump, kissable lips appear overnight. Sweet scent You will always remember your lover’s scent when hugging. Using scented body lotion and perfume, ensure you smell sweet. The new body oil essence from Japanese brand Senka contains rosehip and olive oil, which are excellent for moisturizing and giving off having a delicate and natural smell of rose. For perfume, Jo Malone is my only choice. A long lasting, signature scent is its Nectarine Blossom and Honey cologne, which is irresistibly sweet and my favourite scent in ages.
