our years ago, Tim Wong realised his passion in mini-bonsai design and turned it into his career and established the brand "Quest Terrarium" in 2013. What inspired him to make a career out of bonsai design was the memory of all the miniature show flats models he has seen when he was a kid. Born and raised in the US, TIm was a sushi chef in the states six years ago. A random conversation with his customers, and what happened in his family back then prompted him to leave his comfort zone and start a new life in Hong Kong. With a fondness in art pieces enclosed in glass casing, he gave life to the idea of miniature bonsai wrapped in glass containers. From miniature characters to the story behind, Tim has complete control over every detail of the nature-inspired artwork. Tim's universe is certainly big in his miniature creations.

Another defining moment in music history was her performance of 'Like a Virgin' at the first ever Video Music Awards. Her writhing on stage in her wedding dress and famous "boy toy" belt might be tame by today's standard, but it was outrageous at the time. Her next album True Blue won huge commercial success, though not as classic as Like A Virgin. The last studio album from Madonna in the 80s was the controversial Like a Prayer. Her use of Christian themes and the video for 'Like a Prayer' which featured burning crosses and Madonna kissing Jesus, costed her the spokesperson contract with Pepsi.

While synthesizer acts and bubblegum pop bands dominated the early 80s, U2 went off in their own unique direction, Bono’s lyrics tackled subjects like faith, spirituality and death. It may not be outrageous to name U2 as "Band of the 80s", they released seven studio albums and one EP in the 80s, and with album and single sales climbing, U2 was poised for international stardom in the mid1980s. Alan James Jewell HK's Pioneer DJ n the 1980s, DJ Alan James had no one single boring moment, he was basically DJing every night at different clubs and nightclubs. Now, recalling all those club scenes , he said: “In the 80’s most of the clubs were packed 7 nights a week. They started at 11pm and they wouldn't even stop at 4 or 5am. Some venues even had “Noon Discos” at the weekends for the under 18’s. At that time there was no paparazzi in the clubs and mobile phones didn’t have cameras, so the top clubs were full of famous local and visiting movie stars, singers, etc.” In 1983, Alan James came to Hong Kong. his scene, “I was more into the music that DJ Larry Levan was playing in Paradise Garage, so I preferred to play funkier tunes. I nearly got fired on my first night in HK for playing a funky track. I brought early House Music to Hong Kong in 1985, after picking up some 12” vinyls from a record label from Chicago called Trax. I even remember getting booed by other DJs. Marshell Jefferson's 'Move Your Body' was the hottest house track back then in Hong Kong." As a DJ, in addition to playing one’s best and favourite genre, slight adjustments are also needed to meet the audience's taste. He said that it was not difficult to fulfil the audience at that time: “I have never worried
about an empty dance floor. because of my music choice. The biggest reward is when you first play a track that you believe in and watch the crowd slowly evolve into appreciating the track, and later watching it become an anthem that everyone goes crazy for.” He said in the 80s, it was not difficult to join the rank of the DJs, but the premise is to have your own style: “There are still many DJs in Hong Kong
and around the world from the 80’s still playing and performing now. Before the introduction of Drum machines like the Roland TR909 and TR808, although the beat was not always stable and different music was harder to mix, they were more challenging and required more skills from the DJs. Now CD players or computer software can mix automatically for the DJ which I think is quite boring.”

Yuen Chi Chung My Music Outbreak trictly speaking, Yuen Chi-Chung is not a musician, but his love for music has nonetheless turned him into a music master. Running as a music critic since 1987, he’s become a VIP at music events purely by the number of festivals he’s attended – in short, he loves listening to music just as much as he loves to write. In the 80s, (when he was ten!), foreign music swept the Hong Kong music scene, and it had a huge impact on him. For Yuen ChiChung’s 80s, Hong Kong was a time of pure joy and endless fun.
S
in the mid 80s, he turned his ears to the most popular Western artists at the time, including Madonna, Michael Jackson, and David Bowie, whose 1983 album
Let’s Dance had a particularly deep impact on him. Yuen describes the 80s as the “music outbreak period”. Back then, Hong Kong was lacking large-scale record stores, so he would frequently visit small record stores in different districts, including AMM, the ‘Sun Hing’ record store in Yau Ma Tei, and ‘Exquisite’ record shops in Causeway Bay. In the late 80s, he would visit Monitor Records, a former publication that had transformed into a library of vinyl and cassettes. “When I stepped into a record shop,” Yuen says, “It’s like treasure hunt. It’s another world.” Before his record shop

If you are a big fan of black and white photography, the name Eikoh Hosoe should not sound foreign to you. Ever since he met Mishima, the works of Master Hosoe were about Surrealism VS Realism and Religion VS Lust. In 1960, Master Hosoe co-organised a “Jazz Film Laboratory” with the great movie master Shuji Terayama and dance drama performer Hijikata Tatsumi. As an experimental project, a powerful black and white movie was published, which was called “へそと原爆” (Navel and A-Bomb). Later in 1961, the dance drama “Forbidden Colors” by Mishima and edited by Tatsumi inspired Master Hosoe, he was then asked to shoot for Tatsumi and other dancers and the series were named “Man & Woman”, which quickly won public acclaims. Master Hosoe was immediately invited by Mishima on phone to do a cover shoot for his new work “Beauty Attack” (Bi No Shuugeki), this photo had also paved the way for the masterpiece “Barakei” which would be published later. Tomorrow was directed by John Woo and aired in 1986. Among the casts were Ti Lung, Chow Yun-Fat and Leslie Cheng. The film started the era of Hong Kong gangster / hero movies in the 1980s. Though Ti Lung was the leading actor in the movie back then, the magnificent acting and charismatic image of Chow Yun-Fat did not appear overshadowed by his co star. On the contrary, with his memorable performance and distinctive character, Chow Yun-Fat started to establish his A-lister status in Hong Kong’s movie industry since then. The classic role of “Brother Mark” he portrayed is still a frequent subject of the city’s impersonators up to today. The film is the first of the A Better Tomorrow trilogy, the other two – A Better Tomorrow II (1987) and A Better Tomorrow III (1989) were produced following the success of the first movie. Not only did A Better Tomorrow became a blockbuster back in 1986, it was also widely acclaimed by film critics. The three action classics are collectively known as “A Better

However, after the great hit of A Better Tomorrow, which was awarded the titles of “The Best Movie” and “The Best Leading Actor” in the 6th Hong Kong Film Award, John Woo earned the title of “The Best Director” in the 23rd Taiwan’s Golden House Award. 80S MOVIES IN HONG KONG
Hong Kong in the 80s was a wild playground for movie-lovers. As the city’s economy took flight, the movie scene in Hong Kong was ushered into a golden era, a cradle to many classic action films produced back then. The avant-garde quality of these films is distinct, both in terms of production techniques and artistry. Despite the passage of time – 30 years have gone by since then – the entertainment values, artistic quality and shooting style of these films still inspires the movies today. In this issue, we will take a tour back to the 80s and showcase several must-see Hong Kong classics from the era bygone. It doesn’t matter whether you have experienced the colour of the 80s first-hand, you will surely find these classics captivating.
Project A (1983) A計劃
n the late 1970s, the legendary Bruce Lee showed Hong Kong’s action movies to the world, intoxicating many in the realm of Chinese martial art. After Lee’s death, the burning enthusiasm in action films continues. Jackie Chan then came and took over the 80s with Project A (1983),
I
whcih was written, directed and lead-starred by Chan himself while Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao co-starred. It is one of Chan’s masterpieces showcasing his stunt acts and a record-breaking success in terms of (gross) box office. The story revolved around the rivalries between the Hong Kong Marine Police and the Royal Hong Kong Police Force in the 1920s, who got into a serious bar fight and led to a breathtakingly intense action story. Project A is Jackie Chan’s second product after returning to Hong Kong’s from his Hollywood failure. Thus, the film was a perfect blend of local colour and the Hollywood action scene. Jackie Chan was once considered the successor of Bruce Lee. However, he came up with his own style of “fighting” in Project A – the definition of “dangerous” was pushed to its limit and traces of comic elements were instilled into fistfights and kickings. And it still inspires the Hong Kong action cinema today.

Lost Souls (1980)
nyone going through the list of Hong Kong films of the 80s would notice the omnipresence of Shaw Brothers productions. Among Shaw's masterpieces is the Mou Tunfei-directed Lost Souls (1980), a cinematic portrayal of the mass influx of illegal immigrants into Hong Kong in the 1970s. During those years, China mainlanders as well
eleased in January 1982, the sensational
as Vietnamese refugees fled their homeland en masse in a great exodus to Hong Kong. The mayhem was captured in Last
Souls, a social-conscious film that depicted Hong Kong in the late 70s and early 80s. The story about human trafficking centers around a group of Chinese mainlanders who mistaken Hong Kong as a haven on earth. Only when they set foot on
this "promised land" did they realise what awaited them was something resembling hell. The film gave a detailed account of how illegal immigrants were captured and tortured by organized kidnappers. Scene after scene, the whole film is filled with graphic sex and violence to give its audience a vivid picture of all the ordeals the illegal immigrants had gone through. The director of the film even scouted real-life illegal immigrants to act in the film. Viewers should be prepared for barbaric scenes – human bodies being wax-burnt, stripped and threw to mid-air, water-hosed etc. With these provocative elements, Lost Souls found its place in the hall of 80s cult classics, representing the other face of Hong Kong’s movie circle while inspiring the others. To this day, the film is still being thought of as a “banned film”.

Omakase” in Japanese means “I’ll let you handle it”, and sushi chef Taga-san at Sushi Tokami is en pointe! Being the token Japanese dude at BOOM gave me the privilege of being invited, (I convinced them I knew good sushi and my review would be professional) and it was hands down the best sushi experience I’ve ever had. Unlike many traditional sushi joints in Japan with years of history, Tokami started in Tokyo in 2013 and immediately grabbed a Michelin star in 2014 - but you can read all about that on Google. The bright lights to accentuate the sushi chefs’ meticulous mastery behind the counter combined with the beautiful 300-year old Japanese Cypress wood made me feel like Japanese Jesus walking in. I was escorted and greeted by Mr. Satoshi Taga, a sushi samurai specialising in the old-school Edo-mae tradition. Taga-san has a resume stacked with the most prestigious places in sushi which was evident in his professionalism - every slice was precise, every move was calculated - his work was an artform at the highest level. Taga-san quickly presented me with the Tuna Tossaki Roll which I noticed the rice was a different colour; Taga-san explained that he only uses red vinegar with one of the best Niigata-produced rice to balance out the taste and give it depth. I then noticed I wanted a second one ASAP. The tuna was divine because Tokami was founded

by one of the renowned tuna suppliers of legendary Tsukiji market, Yukitaka Yamaguchi. The lean cut of tuna melted away with no tendons interfering thanks to the perfect slicing courtesy of Taga-san. The feast continued with nigiris ranging from Amberjack, Mackerel to Eel until I was hit with the trio of red tuna, fatty tuna, and supreme fatty tuna. It was simply a stairway to sushi heaven; the flavour was balanced, the vibrance of the fish screamed #sushiporn. As if Taga-san didn’t already outdo himself twelve times throughout the meal, he presented me with a bowl of uni-ikura don (sea urchin and salmon roe rice) which was so good it should’ve been illegal. The meal came to an end with tuna collagen soup, slowly simmered and nicely settling the stomach after my intense food high. The verdict from a Japanese guy? It truly felt like a meal at one of the high-end sushi spots in Tsukiji market. Special shoutout to Taga-san at Tokami for being so hospitable and for the authentic sushi experience!

here's a saying in Chinese that goes "good news kept hidden but scandals spread like wild fire," Perhaps it is well suited to describe the social ecology nowadays. There was this rather interesting event happened in a well-known nightclub. There must be more than a hundred people in the club, everyone was enjoying their time with the strong groovy music. The music suddenly came to a sudden halt, and immediately followed by a loud blast. Don't tell me it's a bomb attack! No one knew what was going on , then there came a stench, with a young girl screaming. There was a huge patch of brownish splash of god knows what down her dress, and of course everyone was looking at her. So something did burst, but what? A lot of people suspected it would be the shitter pipes. Online rumours after the night said that they actually witnessed the explosion. However, insiders later pointed out that it was actually just a bursted drain, everyone would have expected the story had been intensified just for the hype. The truth is not important, the interesting thing
T
is that the Swedish resident DJ was calm as shit, and also had a brilliant idea. As the crowd was evacuating the scene, he took the time to remix the <Brown Eyed Girl> by Van Morrison, what a brilliant bastard.

4 RETRO HAIRSTYLE FOR MEN 男士復古髮型4大類 Even fashion follows a cycle, let alone hairstyle! From Quiff Hair and All Back (nicknamed “Egg Tart Hair”) in the 50s and 60s, Mop Top in the 70s, to the 30/70 Side Part and Middle Part in the 80s and 90s, after decades of evolution retro hairstyles still find their ways to the world of fashion in the 21st century. Just flip through any fashion magazine or check out the latest street style, it’s not hard to notice that retro hairstyles are staging a comeback. For the sake of “retro-chic”, whatever considered old-fashioned in the past can become modern once again. Let’s take a look at some iconic retro hairstyles!
Ducktail Ducktail is the signature hairstyle of the 1980s. The essence of Ducktail is the big wavy curves stretching from top of the head all the way to the end of the tail. Special attention should be paid to the “tail” – it must be pointy. When viewed from the sides, the shape of the hairdo should resemble that of a ducktail. And do remember to use a shiny hair paste.
Side Swept Side Swept is a hairstyle that parts the hair at the corner of one’s forehead. While the sides are held tightly in place, the middle portion should remain wavy to give the look a fresh and modern touch. A new development of Side Swept in recent years is to adjust the parting proportion to suit different face shapes.
Side Swept
Pompadour Named after Madame Pompadour, the mistress of King Louis XV of France who was known for sweeping her hair upwards, Pompadour the hairstyle took center stage in the 50s, but this time, for men. To shape a Pompadour, brush up your bangs to form a crown on your head while the sides of the hair should be combed backwards.

Quiff Hair As its name suggests, Quiff Hair entails brushing all your hair backwards. It can be a brave attempt depending on the hair length and the height of the crown. Also, the style comes with a fluffy top if done right. By the 80s, Quiff Hair was given a twist with the sides of hair curled inwards.

MASSIVE ATTACK
RITUAL SPIRIT EP
It has been 5 years since their last album, UK Bristol's legendary trip hop group, Massive Attack returns with Ritual Spirit. Even though it is just a 4-track EP, it still worths all the discussion and attention. The highlight of the album is how pleased we all are to see after 22 years, Tricky and Massive Attack working together in 'Take It There'. Whenever we hear 3D & Tricky's chorus under cold broken beat and ambience, all the Bristol music memories come back to life. 'Dead Editors' carries the vocals of Roots Manuva, with vocal samples taken from Herbie Hancock's 'Watermelon Man', the theme song by Azekel is oh so psychedelic and ethereal. 'Voodoo in My Blood' collaborates with the Scottish Hip hop band Young Fathers marrying the ritual formula tribal rhythm and post-punk guitar.

SAVAGES
ADORE LIFE
Although Savages’ voices are often compared with Siouxsie and the Banshees, or referred as the group who have learned all the best post-punk from the elites. Yet, in my mind, the London all-female band Savages is more than just the so-called post punk revivalist. This group of girls brings out the suffocating tension of indie rock. Their debut album in 2013 Silent Yourself had already took everyone's breath away. Their second album Adore Life released three years later, the band's sound were more powerful and exciting, as if they wanted to make the most noisy songs for the genre. The first two hit singles 'The Answer' and 'T.I.W.Y.G.' are both blood-boiling under the arrogant unruly noise rock. 'Evil' and 'Surrender' are dance punk songs that are full of tension, and love song 'Adore' shows their most gentle and calm side.

WILD NOTHING
LIFE OF PAUSE
This is undoubtedly the choice of spring sound in 2016! I am talking about the American indie-pop / dream-pop band Wild Nothing's third album Life of Pause. Four years after the release of Nocturne, Brooklyn singer-songwriter Jack Tatum's music is not only beautiful and lush, the album is also inspiring and full of spring blossom. Theme song 'Life of Pause' draws us a picture with morning dew in a very 80's pop synth; marching motorik beats of 'To Know You' and 'TV Queen' are both tunes that will lighten your mood; 'Alien' is the most beautiful dream pop, indie rock 'Japanese Alice' is extremely refreshing; and in polyrhythms 'Reichpop' adopts minimalist Steve Reich's formula of minimalism percussion art-pop, a tune not to be missed.

FIELD MUSIC
COMMONTIME
Maxïmo Park, The Futureheads and Field Music are amongst the most popular bands of Britain’s North East Scene of indie rock music. My eyes have always laid on Field Music. After all, David Brewis and Peter Brewis as the core of Field Music do not only belong to the indie rock framework, their music style are recognised as leftfieldpop, it's a unique identity with the heritage of progressive rock and pop melodies like AOR's. Commontime is their fifth official album (excluding last year's documentary soundtrack album Music For Drifters), listening to Field Music still intrigues me. The Noisy Days Are Over reminds me of the kind of rich rhythm of pop art rock from Talking Heads, where 'Disappointed' is like Hall & Oates meets Yes; 'Trouble at the Light' demonstrates its progressive rock style to the full.

AN IDEAL
The ideal is very often mere conformation to the reality of life. After the release of his first album Model in 2013, he comes back with his third this year - With Ambition. The new release continues to feature his low profile style. His self-composed song 'Wild Animals' (lyrics by Wyman Wong) gives a primitive twist to human love, the savage love between wild animals. 'Mama & Papa' is a tender depiction on the relationship among family members. The main theme of the album centers around city living, in particular the affectional bonds between individuals. While trying to give a sensible account of life, the sound tracks denote an alternative way of living, one that is detached from everyday chaos.

It’s like putting on a pair of VR goggles that instantly transport the viewer to a surreal reality. Now, a “first-person” revolution is being projected onto the silver screen. Hardcore Henry started the revolution. By applying first-person perspectives, a territory long-dominated by video games, the whole action movie is filmed in the leading character’s cybernetic eyes. ou get what you pay for when it comes to selecting earphones. Get them cheaply, modestly with a few hundreds, or indulge yourself with heavenly acoustic experience worthy of thousands of dollars or beyond – we are spoilt by choices. Sceptics often frown on the notion of spending a fortune for the mere sake of acoustic perfection. No harm in doing a trial-listen. It may be a love-at-first-sound experience that sends shock waves down your auditory nerves and your whole pile of earphone collections down the trash can. By just looking at their configurations, one can immediately conclude that Shure’s SE846 in-ear headphones won’t come cheaply. The earphones’ three-way system configuration and four-amateur units dedicate the bass outlets (x2) and the mid- (x1) and high(x1) frequency distributions. To ensure a perfectly tailored audio experience, besides boasting a low-, mid-, and high-frequency distribution, the earphones’ adjustable sound signatures include bright, warm, and balanced options. The changeable nozzle inserts of SE846 allows listeners to change the rear filter and customise the earphones’ frequency response. You may also consider Shure’s first portable listening amplifier SHA900. It supports a maximum of 24bit / 96kHz Hi-Res audio output. The amplifier is also loaded with five customizable EQ settings, including De-ess, Loudness, Vocal Boost, Low Boost and Flat. Why not experiment with the settings, and pamper your sensory cells?

Whenever it comes to which piece of Bowie's work holds the "my favorite" label in my heart and has influenced me the most, I would definitely say they are the stunning and timeless albums in the year 1977 - Low and Heroes. It was only in the 1980s that I discovered these two equally fascinating albums of "Trilogy of Berlin", the time lag didn't stop me from being utterly inspired when I spent some good old time exploring these two forward-looking classics. In 1977, punk movement had blown up to an intense stage while on the other hand, year 1977 (say the
period around 1977) was also a significant year to electronic music. At the end of 1976, Bowie moved to West Berlin, Low (original name was New Music, Night and Day) and Heroes are the two albums Bowie produced together with Brian Eno as a music partner, and were published in January and October 1977 respectively. The former was recorded mainly in France Château d'Hérouville with mixing works done in West Berlin, the later was solely recorded in West Berlin Hansa Tonstudio. Both albums carry the spirit and essence of German kraurock bands including Kraftwerk, Neu!, Harmonia and others. Bowie, the rock chameleon who was fully inspired by German electric music, opened up his ideas to the creation of a brand new

round of music genre. The creation of Low and Heroes in Bowie's "Trilogy of Berlin" are closely connected. Both albums were produced in 1977 on vinyl, choreographed with electrified rock songs, and both of the tracks are arranged in a thought-provoking manner. The most exceptional significance of the two albums is that Bowie went away from being a 70's rock singersongwriter, and wrote a number of simple art-pop / avant-pop song (with no such thing as the main song and the chorus), coming up with ambient electronic music with no vocals, a style which was influenced by Eno. It is also worth noting that back then, Bowie and Eno did not have the array of advanced electronic synthesisers as electronic pioneers like the Tangerine Dream or Kraftwerk, they only had limited electronic musical instruments and sound effects production skills to create that kind of cold futuristic atmosphere, which is the foundation of enlightenment to the late 1970s and early 1980s new wave / post-punk generation of electronic sounds. Also released in 1977, Iggy Pop's debut album The Idiot
with Bowie as the producer (might as well call it an album of them both) was published after Low, but the truth is this album had already begun recording in France and Berlin way beforehand, this album was regarded as the unofficial Bowie's "Berlin period" product. Compared with Bowie's later album Lodger, The Idiot, Low and Heroes are more regarded as part of the proper "Trilogy of Berlin". As Bowie brought the broken drum machine beats and rough synth riff in 'Nightclubbing', it led him to his electronic music. As the backstage mastermind of Low and Heroes, Brian Eno had more communications with the German Krautrock electronic music. Michael Rother of Neu!, Hans-Joachim Roedelius of Cluster and Dieter Möbius formed the supergroup Harmonia. Eno visited their studio Frost later in 1976 and had a 11 day- music making session, the album Track and Traces was released 21 years later in the name of Harmonia '76 (second edition was renamed Harmonia & Eno '76). It was in 1977, Cluster and Eno joint forces and released

If You Don’t Know Now You Know The Way That David Bowie Influences Skateboarding By: Pro B Lam problam
Sounds like David Bowie have nothing to deal with skateboarding, but he actually influences skateboarder lots in so many ways, his graphics, his music has been all over the skateboarding industry, Let us pay a little tribute to remember what David Bowie did for us. It will be so boring when you watch a skateboarding video without background music, so most of the skateboarding video part is more like a music video nowadays. The songs that used by the skateboarder always affect the outcome of their video part, even though his skateboarding skills is amazing but if he put together with a not so suitable song, the video part will still not be remembered. On the other hand, when you edit the video with a matching song, the video and the music will get married and bring the video to gain in different feedback. So from VHS tapes back in the day to the latest online videos, there were more than 20 video parts that used David Bowie’s song for their background music, 'Rebel Rebel' has been used for more than 5 parts. My personal favorite part which uses David Bowie’s Song is Marc Johnson part in 'Pretty Sweet' video, the song 'Five Years' merged with the video perfectly, with Marc Johnson inimitable style, it is
just incredible. Another wellknown video part that used David Bowie Song was Arto Saari Part in 'Sorry' video, he used 2 of David Bowies songs '1984' and 'Rock N Roll Suicide' in his part. Besides his music, David Bowie influences skateboarder by his graphics as well, there were serval decks that used David Bowie Aladdin Sane album cover as graphic, and the most famous one was released by “Blind” for skateboard legend Jason Lee. Eric Koston, Andrew Reynolds and Pedro Barros also used the same graphic for their deck in the past years.

The Open Mic Session ‘80s Hip-Hop - The Golden Era By: Sean B
We've all heard that one song from the Sugar Hill Gang, ‘Rappers Delight’, which was the first ever song to be considered hip hop (If you haven't, go YouTube it). Now this was in the late ‘70s and was still a new sound. It wasn’t until the ‘80s that hip hop really started to climb. There're some common misconception with hip hop though. people don't realise that it's a culture, and that rap is the music within this culture. This culture consisted of MC skills, DJs scratching, beatboxing, spray painting art onto walls – originally even gang violence was mixed in with this culture, which is what gave hip hop the misunderstood reputation that it still carries today. Another misconception is that people don’t know what hip hop stands for. ‘Hip’ is the knowledge and ‘hop’ is the movement. Hip hop is a movement of trying to elevate your own state of mind into a better way of thinking and intelligence, because without this, where’s the culture?
But I digress. Here I’m talking about how ‘80s hip hop is the most important decade for hip hop, because this is the decade in which producers in the rap scene really began to experiment in giving studios the nickname "The Lab". ‘80s rap music is the first genre to heavily use samples from other songs to create a sound people haven't heard before. A sample being a very small clip from another song (usually a vocal sample) mainly focusing on old blues records for that nostalgia feel on their songs. Producers like Dr. Dre (who I'm sure you've heard of in some way or another), if not by his music but by his latest film Straight Outta Compton, is still to this day one of the most influential people in hip hop. In fact, Dr. Dre was one of the founders of the group N.W.A., which gave us rappers Ice Cube, MC Ren, DJ Yella, Arabian Prince, The D.O.C. and Eazy E whose death still echoes in hip hop today. Rapping back in the ‘80s was when the use of ‘wordplay’ was born in hip hop. There's no
other genre out there that uses metaphors so heavily to express the hardships they would face on a daily basis. Quite often the words they would use would be of a negative nature, but the energy was positive. Rhyming back in the ‘80s is quite simplified compared to how it grew to be in the ‘90s and onwards. Rhyming became more technical and rappers began using more words with multiple syllables. The flow and delivery of words has always been a key point to being a good MC. That being said, it doesn’t mean rappers in the ‘80s didn’t have skill; in fact everything back then was a lot harder when you consider everything was new and still being developed. Even DJs back then had pure skill. There was no computer screen
like DJs have today; it was all mastering of technique. ‘80s hip hop was responsible for scratching, which was invented by DJs like Grand Master Flash, who helped bring the hip hop scene alive in New York. Rappers came from all over the U.S. but California and New York City will always be home to the hip hop culture. Back then, If you wanted to get noticed in the rap scene, you couldn’t just upload a video to YouTube and hope it goes viral so you can get that record contract. There was a grind to it. You had to put yourself out there, and win rap battle after rap battle after rap battle. And only then, maybe, could you make a name for yourself and get that radio play.

Mod Confession Dark Side Of The 80s

“In general people put too much faith in the rich, the famous, the politicians, and not enough faith in themselves.” - Bono Imagine if anyone could be lucky enough to buy a copy of the U2 's The Joshua Tree record which first released on 9 March 1987, it would become part of their body and one may perceive the world differently thereafter. Whenever I play The Joshua Tree vinyl, I could literally breathe the grim, dark-hued unsettling religious imagery of dark deserts. A vision of blasted hopes, pointless violence and anguish that brings me back to the dark side of the civilised world of the 80s in political desolation. It has become my habit
to play the classic track 'With or Without You' only during midnight hours, the song builds from a soothing beginning to a resounding climax, the guitar wall caresses you like a gospel truth of pain and isolation in the analogue world. My another favourite track of the album is the Lou Reed inspired 'Running to Stand Still'. The song's title phrase originated from Bono asking his brother how his struggling business was going, where the brother responded, "It's like running to stand still." The depressed piano chords , the unexpected blues slide guitar,
the

Bono's heartbreaking tune still breaks my heart after 25 years of constant airplay. This vinyl album has always been my best companion to escape from the digital age.

Our 80’s

Nude make up has lately become a hot make up trend because the natural and simple make up is the best way to demonstrate your own unique natural beauty. BB cream with light pinkish lips, are all the things you need for a glowing and healthy skin looking. But when you go back to the 80s, when you see the decades of Maddona and David Bowie, it is obvious that no matter the make up or couture, both involved sharp colours and exaggerated elements. Full and dark eyebrows, tough and boyish. The Brow Sword eyebrows pencil from Shu Uemura is the indispensable trick. The unique design of the “sword-like” eyebrows pencil enables you to brush the perfect either thick or thin eyebrows. Using its sword flat surface to brush
the eyebrows to the brows end. You can easily have full and dark eyebrows. People tend to use dark brown, grey or black eye shadows to create deep set eyes and smoky eyes nowadays. In the 80s, sharp colour eye shadows were the tools to get you deep set eyes. Brush the eye shadow from the eyes end with the extending upward movement, it is not necessary to use finger to blend it but just leave the clear-cut shadow lines. Make Up Forever’s Aqua Matic Waterproof Glide-On Eye Shadow is great to help you do it with its pencil design. The blush colour was not a sun-kissed natural one but brownish colour to raise your cheek bone in the 80s. Tango with Bronzing Powder from NYX offers you dual colour, brown and orange. Using the orange colour on the surface of your

cheek bone, and brushing the brown near the bottom edge towards the temple. Same for the lips, shocking red was always the thing for the 80s. First use the lip liner from Bobbi Brown to create clear lips edge, then fill the lips with Chanel Rouge Coco. You can then get a full and sexy lips with the glossy colour in a second. EVA Pinkland Pink is your signature colour what makes you so in love with pink? I used to wear a lot of Punk Rock-black when I was studying, I then fell in love with cartoons in the 80s where most characters are pink in colour. I tried to put different types of pink clothes on, dyed my hair pink too. I’ve tried blue and purple, but realised pink is just me. I’ve turned into pink for five years now. People often links pink with girliness. Are you one? I am not even close to girly! I am actually quite like a boy. To link girliness and pink is so cliche, some guys look great in pink too. Afterall, we only want to feel comfy. What influences you most in your style? I took inpirations from Japanese magazines like ZIPPER and

NYLON. Then I realised art pieces could inspire my style too. Tell us your experience about your DJ lessons? I just enjoy so much as DJing is something that I love. I got to listen to all sorts of music. Time flies when I’m on set at parties or at lessons. My challenge now is to gain more public performance experince to brush up my skills. How was your first DJ show at Club Cubic? It was a fun night and I’ve done my best. I would work on interacting more with the audience and I hope I am able to add more of my personal style .

Punk
Who is your favorite fashion / 你衣著打扮的風格是受甚麼影響? music idol? Michael Jackson is my muse 起初我會參考一些日本雜誌,好像 in both fashion and music. His 《ZIPPER》與《NYLON》都是我喜歡 songs in the 80s are timeless and 看的雜誌,後來發覺看Art Piece也 會對穿衣打扮有影響。 no one can copy his style.
enjoy。
