he modern curators of the fifties, witnesses the transformation of a rare sight of an alternative lifestyle situated in the modern day. Life in the fifties was before technology emerged into our daily lives and when ‘The American Dream’ was all we chased for. With the words ‘vintage’ and ‘retro’ attached to it now, the three profiles we follow brings the art form back to life. We aren’t restricted to old albums and movies to understand Rock’n’Roll, Rockabilly has been surrounding us without us even noticing. Adding the Hong Kong style into the Western culture, local Rockabilly curators chat to us about the path that lead them to discovering the clique that welcomes them with open arms. thought of gathering as a group to make music. We like Rockabilly and had merely wanted to admire everything about it, together”. Coming across individuals in Hong Kong then with a strong liking and interest towards the Rockabilly genre and culture was considered rare, so it was fascinating for the members to be able to share and appreciate their collective passion together. 2013 was the year that The Boogie Playboys had solidified their membership, and Barry, the drummer and one of the vocalists of the group, deems The Boogie Playboys as a Rockabilly collective with great chemistry and a strong bond. When asked about an aspect of the Rockabilly culture that is especially captivating, The Boogie Playboys agreed that what did it for them was the entire package consisting of Rockabilly music, fashion, automobiles, and an energyfilled attitude. Rockabilly places heavy emphasis on style and clothing, with its bright, bold colours, sleek suits, denims, twotoned brogues, and pompadour hairdos – an impactful aesthetic that is relatively uncommon under the Hong Kong spotlight. To The Boogie Playboys, researching and playing around with Rockabilly fashion and style is an integral process that is full of fun, adding to their dynamics as a group on the stage and in the studio. “Our image and sound are fun and dynamic”, the members laughed as they admitted to embodying Rockabilly’s rebellious, free, and youthful attitude. In conjunction with The 59 Tattoo and Barber Shop’s retro interiors and flashy automobiles straight out of the fifties, shareholder Max and The Boogie Playboys’ lead vocalist and guitarist Felix join together

to spread out the Rockabilly vibes with their endeavors in the Street Retro Bikers Club. The Boogie Playboys had been a vital executing part of The Dirty Boogie Rockabilly Festival, an experience designed to introduce and share Rockabilly with Hong Kong. Largely inspired by the renowned Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend, a fiesta with pool parties, fashion and car shows, fifties tattoo parlours and band performances, The Dirty Boogie Rockabilly Festival had gathered the efforts of fellow Rockabilly and fifties culture lovers and bands in its beginnings, five years ago: “The Rockabilly circle in Hong Kong seems to be expanding bit by bit, and it appears that more people have been intrigued and interested in finding more about Rockabilly music and culture”. The members share their idea of integrating a marketplace into the festival this year, and to create a community of a retro Rockabilly bazaar to strengthen the interaction and materialize the Rockabilly experience. 9 Tattoo and Barber Shop got their name from a famous British motorcycle club, the tattooing duo Marcus Yuen and Nigo Chan are amazed by the culture of vintage motorcycles, also invested in the sport itself, the duo is inspired by this culture and the whole aesthetic that it transpires, decides to name it after this infamous motorcycle club. The pair embodies the fifties lifestyle, lights up with enthusiasm when the subject of fifties retro culture pops up. The store was a haste and reckless decision made by

the duo and two other partners, “seeing that it was a great space, we rented it immediately and worked from there” this decision might be a quick one, but the impact that it did was something that was never expected. Rooting from their mutual liking for vintage motorcycles, it lead them to different communities that share similar values. They started absorbing more from different circles, their understanding for the fifties lifestyle enriched by the experience, their own sense of style and cultural preference is
ever growing, and is not bound by a singular term. Marcus believes that it’s a journey, searching for his personal style, the more you take in through the years, you’ll realise it’s a whole set of values that you take on, you get to know what you truly love and appreciate. It’s not just a singular aspect, or look that you’re representing. The pair describes their style as being a very retro British style. of culture, you have to accept that to live out a culture it has to be lived to it’s fullest, it’s classic” This culture does not seem to particularly stand out in Hong Kong, not a lot of people would get into depth in exploring this lifestyle choice, many would just simply follow a hot trend, it’s so popular nowadays to blindly follow what’s popular as opposed to truly understanding the aesthetics behind it. Not a lot of platforms could expose this culture to other groups, except for the ones who have a genuine interest, you have to have specific likings to know the culture, and explore around it. The boys of 59 Tattoo and Barber Shop wishes to branch out in making their shop a known brand, by encompassing Hong Kong elements into the vintage lifestyle that inspired them. The artwork that they collect from old tattoo shops in Hong Kong embodies the culture from when it all started in the city, having got the sketches from the most original tattoo shops in Hong Kong, most of the drawings are from the 70’s and the 80’s, they want to preserve it by marking it’s growth and the way that tattooing has progressed through the years. Instead of looking at the fifties lifestyle as just a trend, the pair hopes to add in their personal input, morphing it into a style of their own, the pair seeks to build their lives around the culture. Marcus’s tattooing concepts comes from his love of the retro culture, encompassing the images that inspired him from where it all started, and add in elements of modern Hong Kong, “It’s a whole new style!” Being able to make it known for their own style, and as a brand that is their biggest goal.

The pair wants to tell everyone that we should not be restricted by a specific culture or style, to acknowledge what’s happening around us, understanding your own interests, is a huge part in embracing culture, not to only mimic. The time you put into learning about the culture will bring more significance to your life, understanding the depth of what the fifties could affect you, past the fashion and the clothes. When asked the best place to get to know more about the culture, the pair suggested The Dirty Boogie Rockabilly Festival. It is a great event to expose the culture to new comers, 59 Tattoo and Barber Shop will also have a booth on the night, performing live tattooing sessions, a haircut booth to complete your fifties look. The pair lastly added for interested parties do your research online and expect to be surrounded by fifties enthusiasts. o-founders Melanie and David Riach explained the sole purpose of the Hong Kong Classic Festival was set up to celebrate classic cars and all things vintage in Hong Kong, from fashion to food and music. It all started with their Austin Healey 3000, a classic car they shipped from England to Hong Kong, having found little to none events hosted near the area, they saw a gap in the market for a vintage driven weekend, the pair decided to further develop the growth of the culture, as they saw exponential growth in the past few years. For the past three years, the festival attracted mostly classic car and bike enthusiasts who wanted to see and even hear some of the cars in action, and also quite a lot of photographers find this a rare opportunity to snap so many great cars in one location. It’s a hub for the likeminded community to spend a weekend exploring some of the International influences that might go beyond their previous understanding of the culture itself, the pair hope for attendees to “walk away with a new appreciation and interest in classic vehicles and culture” It’s a mission for them to expose the local community with what’s more to the growing retro culture in Hong Kong. By bringing in elements from classic vehicles to films, art and workshops, the festival surely covers all the aspects of the lifestyle itself. It engages

Hong Kong style within their products, making it accessible for everyone to add a little fifties to their look and to introduce them to the idea of reaching out to explore the era’s hidden gems. The festival hopes to bringto all an “once in a lifetime” experience to everyone who attends, first comers or fifties enthusiasts. By bringing in local and international elements to the festival , “it adds an extra dimension of interest” for a wide range of people. Last year the highlight was when they flew in Brookland’s museum’s Napier Railton a 32L 47 time land speed record car, everyone had the chance to see the car in action. It makes these rare situations possible, they ultimately assembles and gathers all the blocks that builds Hong Kong’s unique fifties vibe.

a themed restaurant working in other big cities such as London and New York, he wanted to venture into Asia, bringing in the lesser known aesthetic of an American fifties styled diner. Of course the cuisine plays a heavy role in depicting a restaurant’s image, but for The Diner, the food and the name was just simply not enough. About all of the decorations are original pieces from America, Thomas personally sources them in order to create a coherent vibe throughout the whole dining experience. The furnish of the shop could only be described in one simple word: Retro. When asked which piece of decoration is Thomas most proud of, the most obvious winner has to be the back-end of a real 1958 Cadillac car which is now converted into a sofa. His latest acquisition is a vintage 1950 Plymouth Police Patrol car sheriff’s door owning its place on the side of the wall, The Diner is a museum-like restaurant where everyone not only enjoys a meal, but also finds excitement in being carried back into the fifties everyday life. Thomson wants to preserve the era that is filled with optimism, dreams and fun, he found that through music, fashion and decor, it could be transpired to modern day life. What The Diner explores is an extension of the fifties in our everyday life now. He shows that it’s not only from memories or pictures can we see the documents of the past, places such as The Diner, would like to preserve better yet continue growing the fifties aesthetic, making it into a modern day version of what was preserved, creating a place for people to become more aware of the lifestyle, creating a wider

variety in choices for people when thinking of a spcific cultural preference. With the rise of fifties representatives springing up scattered across the island, The Diner is one of the many faceted sides of the fifties. Thomson plans on expanding the business, hoping to bring to Hong Kong his love for creating a casual and relaxing space for everyone to soak in everything fifties!

ARCADIA SPECTACULAR rcadia Spectacular lives up truly to their name: spectacular, awe-inspiring, and an advocacy for a meaningful environmental cause through the medium of music, experience, and festivity. Cyrus Bozorgmehr reveals the team’s goals to bring worldly issues, such as sustainable and environmentally conscious living, as well as a common sensitivity towards cultures through expression, performance, and storytelling, to the attention of festival fans and frequenters, as well as the public. Bozorgmehr comments on the difficulty of selecting their Asia stops, stating that
“everywhere we looked on the map, there was another city, another culture that opened up huge possibilities”. Settling the Asia tour stops in Seoul and Taipei was mainly due to the high quality of the venues, namely Seoul’s Olympic Stadium and the Taipei City Riverside Park, as well as the “warmth, kindness, and hospitality” of both locations. However, the personal relationships that the Arcadia Spectacular team was able to build with the respective local partners in both cities was ultimately what triggered the final nod of approval. Modern Li Bai -Hoon is back to his roots - Hong Kong, after being in South East Asia for over a decade, touring with his former bands, the Rock ’n’ Roll drummer decides to go solo and embarks on his journey to becoming The Modern Li Bai. We have recently discussed with him his path to coming back to Hong Kong, what has changed, what has stayed the same and what he could see in his future. Hong Kong has recently seen many indie band’s success in breaking into the usually mainstream lead atmosphere, J-Hoon decided that it’s time to venture back to where his home to seek for some new stimulations. From his days of being in a rock band in college in Manila, a sudden whiff of nostalgia hit, now as a solo artist, the Hip Hop artist misses the days when there was a connection between him and his bandmates, answering one another’s questions, when asked about the aesthetics of

his past musical productions, J-Hoon firmly states that some songs are classics to me but some faded out as time passed by, his outlook on music is that “it isn’t just one style that you’re dedicated to,” there should’t be any limits as to where your music can bring you and what styles or genre it should be defined as. For his music, I always look for new challenges to spark up new ideas, taken Madonna’s theory “you have to constantly improve yourself” which is this very motto that has caused the breakup of his former band. No back in Hong Kong, J-Hoon is amazed by the changes to the music industry. remembering before he left, the industry allowed very little creative space in terms of music genres outside of the mainstream pop, it was fun if it was a hobby on the side, but to make it into a career Hong Kong does not seem to be the perfect choice. It’s in it’s final stages now, this would be the first time I have produced a cantonese based CD, it’s a relatively new challenge for me. but thanks to all the artists that helped me with the tracks including Mousefx, Delf, JDG, MC ChaCha, they have made this experience a lot more fun, they introduced me to new angles of Hip Hop and showed me where i could take my music, I can’t wait to share my music with everyone!”

Inked ‘Tattoo’ comes from the Tahitian word ‘Tatau’, which means ‘to mark something’. Hosted annually by the founder of Freedom Tattoo Studio Gabe Shum, the Hong Kong China International Tattoo Convention 2016 will be making its return this coming October, at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. Attendees will be welcomed by more than 120 tattoo artists from across the globe, to witness the development of tattooing both internationally and locally. Thinking of getting your first tattoo? Interested participants can book the tattooing service in advance so that they can discuss the design with their favourite tattooist to suit their needs. The celebrity effect and growing emphasis on creativity help boost people’s interest in tattoo art. However, some conservative Hong Kongers still see tattooing as a ‘traid symbol’ rather than a form of art. Gabe hopes to break that misconception. “What they don’t know is that every tattoo has its unique story. Very often people get tattoos in dedication to someone, or
to remember an experience which created a significant impact on his life.” One of his’ previous clients used to get a new tattoo each time he loses a job. The long list of dates tattooed on his leg now became symbols of motivation, rather than a documentation of his failures. Instead of using paper, tattoo artists use the human skin as the canvas for their artwork. Black and navy inks were the most used colours for tattoos in the early days, making three-dimensional artwork hard to produce. However, after the rapid development of the tattoo culture in Western countries, bright colours such as red, yellow, purple and green are introduced, giving tattoo artists more potential to create realistic and lifelike tattoos. The design works are too evolving. Got a favourite cartoon character? You are certainly free to experiment with anything, there is no boundaries , given you have a tattoo artist of your choice. Apart from serving as a platform to introduce tattoo culture to the city and to multiple communities within the city , the convention will

Compared with the western societies, Asian countries hold a relatively conservative attitude toward the LGBT community, but with the widespread support of the love equality, Asian filmmakers try to sketch the same-sax love in their cameras and definitely they’ve done a great job in recounting the stories. Love is equal, and let’s take a retrospect of those great eastern homosexual movies.

This event is not for the faint hearted as participants not only have to make their way through the 6 kilometres hurdle filled course, any failures in completing each hurdle comes with certain penalties as well, this is certainly a test to your physical abilities. This year’s race sees the birth of a new category: Competitive. For those who are training to become part of the Elite team, this ones for you, you will be able to rank against all of the Elite racers, testing your limits against the high standards. Do you want to take part in the race? Be prepared before the day, remember that strength has to be built in progression, you will be able to enjoy a change in your lifestyle, and it would not only be for the day of the event, most attendees follow their practices and leads a warriors lifestyle even after the event. The race might just be a one off event, but you will be able to gain a new lifestyle habit. You will learn to challenge yourself physically and mentally, as it requires a lot of will power as well, this might be the event the becomes your motivation to lead a healthy and powerful life.

EVERYBODY TAKE PART IN CLEANING HK t all started in 1999 whilst Lisa Christensen (founder of HK Cleanup) was hiking on one of her favourite trails in Sai Kung, and found it impossible to ignore the huge pile of trash waiting for them at the end of the path. Nissa Marion (co-founder of Ecozine) works with Lisa to produce Ecozine a magazine targeted at everything eco-friendly in Hong Kong. The pair believes in changing the city’s atmosphere bit by bit. The 16th Hong Kong Cleanup Challenge will be taking place from September 1st to December 1st. However, the duo reminds us all, every little lifestyle choice matters! Next time you go shopping bring a recycled bag, bring you own water bottle for you work outs, don’t just act on it when there are events, do it everyday! On a bigger scale the pair wish for the community to lend a helping hand, saying that we should all voice out our feelings, take action! Right now we are lagging behind as other countries have taken action on banning plastic bags as well as micro-beads. Although a lot of awareness has been raised, we still need to work harder in order to enjoy an empty beach!

選擇去便利店買水，可以隨身自己帶著水壺，不只要在特定的日子或活動 上才關注環保，而是每天都應該多加留意。
在城市的發展上，她們希望政府跟各大市民都一起伸出緩手，盡量發表
自己的意見，以行動來表示大家的需求！現在香港仍然在環保這方面落後 於其他大城市，很多都已經施行了全面禁用塑膠袋，跟塑膠製品。雖然比起 以前已經多了人關注環保的概念，但是還需要更多人發起行動！

The ‘60s Rock Powerhouse of the East: Korean Psychedelic Rock he Korean psychedelic rock genre is truly a hidden gem, unreachable without persistent rummaging through the depths of foreign influence through the ages, and past the glittery distractions of the booming South Korean pop culture wave. In particular, the ‘60s was a thriving and defining period for Korean psychedelic rock, as it had spawned pioneering figures in the genre, such as Shin Joong Hyun, Key Boys, and later, Sanulrim, in the ‘70s (to name a few). Korea’s psychedelic rock, heavily coloured by American blues and folk sounds, was fused with the addition of traditional Korean instruments and musical pungency. The genre had indeed

paved an opening for subsequent, game-changing endeavors in the growth of rock music, giving rise to heavy metal bands such as Boohwal and Sinawe. Shin Joong Hyun, the godfather of Korean psychedelic rock, is a forerunner in his difficult pursuits in the music of the postKorean War period. Wowing U.S. army bases under the name Jackie Shin, he had covered, most notably, Iron Butterfly’s ‘InA-Gadda-Da-Vida’, and produced in a style similar to the Ventures’, with heavy guitar experiments and surf rock elements. In the ‘60s, Korea was producing music of all kinds – folk rock, surf rock, R&B, and country, and its foreign-influenced music had cleverly integrated with elements

Shin Joong Hyun was considered the ‘godfather of Korean rock’.
Kim Chang Wan was 1/3 of the Sanulrim power trio of the ‘70s. of traditional Korean five-note melodies and emotions of the people at the time, sculpting a fine incorporation of ‘East Meets West’. The audience of Korean psychedelic rock had shifted from Americans to Koreans themselves, and the scene-cumlegacy was continued by Sanulrim after Shin’s imprisonment in 1975 on alleged drug use, his music banned from the public. Sanulrim, being the trusty bridge between psychedelic rock and its transition into the progressive rock, as well as the heavy metal genre in the ‘70s, was the naughty power-trio that had appeared out of nowhere, and was seemingly detached from the scene with their addictive psychedelic, hard rock that resembled The Sex Pistols, as well as their unique ad libs and fuzz

distortion sounds in their debut album 'What, Already?' (1977). Sanulrim had enlivened the style of a faded electronic echo against a bass riff and spacious vocals, exemplified in ‘Laid Silks and Satins On My Heart’ (1978). ‘Primitive’, ‘raw’, and ‘garage psych’ were common words used to describe Sanulrim’s music, as their honest sound had captured audiences with a distinct approach to the rock genre in the ‘70s. Amidst the foreign influences that psychedelic rock brings to Korea, Shin Joong Hyun had stated: “to me, the job is to make rock music in Korean style”. The mix of Korean sounds resemble wind, rain, and thunder, together with the powerful rock sound allows the proliferation of Korean psychedelic rock to become more alluring and magical.

My obsession with five-piece British rock band TOY took place four years ago, as their synthesis of psychedelic rock, German krautrock, post-punk, shoegaze, and dream pop elements in their form was right up my alley. I was lucky enough to catch them in June, 2014. TOY will release their third album Clear Shot this October, and it will succeed Join The Dots after a period of three years. Their vocals present a familiar reunion, the most significant change would have to be the departure of former keyboard player Alejandra Diez, with Max Oscarnold replacing. The two pre-released singles: ‘Fast Silver’ and ‘I’m Still Believing’, the former delivering captivating, dream-like sensations, and the latter a musical concept of a clean break-up. What makes TOY’s songs mature would have to be Tom Dougall’s delivery of a tone brimming with emotions and allure, portrayed in ‘Clouds That Cover The Sun’, a song that carries a graceful tempo of waltz, as well as the striking percussions and strings in ‘Jungle Games’ and the whimsical krautrock overtones in ‘Spirits Don’t Lie’.
I had disc-jockeyed at Clockenflap in its early days, and I had opened my DJ set at the 2012 Clockenflap with Die Antwoord’s ‘Fatty Boom Boom’. From early on, I had anticipated the Ninja and ¥o-landi Visser rap-rave duo from Cape Town to perform in Hong Kong. To my surprise, Die Antwoord released their fourth album 'Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid', two years after 'Donker Mag', as well as publicized the extremely exciting news of their addition to the Clockenflap line-up this year. This album, as usual, is one that makes listeners twist and turn with glee and distortion, especially the dramatic undertones and Broadway musical elements in ‘We Have Candy’, the EDM-cum-jungle combo in ‘Banana Brain’, and Cypress Hill’s Sen Dog and his sarcastic gangsta rap jabs in ‘Shit Just Got Real’. ‘Rats Rule’ had also featured Jack Black’s vocals in the Cabaret genre, while ‘Alien’ presents a melancholy sound in the triple measure and ‘I Don’t Care’ a distinct folk tone.

Spanish cartoonist Joan Cornellà held his individual exhibition in June at Connecting Space in North Point. I was lucky enough to chat to him. I also learned about the alternative country band Wilco from Chicago, and their tenth album 'Schmilco' released in September 2016. The album feature a cover art by Cornellà himself, something that immediately familiarized me with this album, although I had encountered Wilco’s music long before Cornellà’s rise to fame. Do not be misled by Joan Cornellà’s dark wit and striking illustrations. Schmilco, named after American singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson’s 1971 album 'Nilsson Schmilsson', possesses no trace of the experimentally distinct vocals in 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot', nor the style in the previously released 'Star Wars'. Jeff Tweedy brings to the world an album of the soft rock/country rock one similar to 'Sky Blue Sky'. ABSENTEE
A friend of mine had recommended Adrian Lo, an independent singer-songwriter and producer in Hong Kong, but it wasn’t until recently that I had the opportunity to listen to his music at the ‘Ear Up Music Project’ where he was performing as a participant, and myself a panelist. Lo’s understanding of the realm and attitude of the independent musicality prompted him to digitally release his first four-track EP 'Absentee', which he plans to release physically in October. Lo possesses extensive knowledge in performing with classical violin and piano, so his productions guarantees a high level of quality. As a multi-instrumentalist performer, 'Absentee' was also an EP that Lo had written, performed, recorded, and produced all on his own. ‘Nobody Knows My Name’ may allow listeners to be reminded of James Blake, while ‘Dragon’s Den’ fuses sounds of the guitar and piano to sculpt a magnificent ballad number. ‘Selfie’ and its soul-jazz sounds highlight a hint of antique to Lo’s vocals, while ‘Waves’ exposes Radiohead’s influence on his creative endeavors. 早有朋友向我推介Adrian Lo這位獨立唱作歌手兼製作人，直到我在早

I guess we’re all fascinated by MARVEL vs DC . On one hand we admire Marvel’s constant hit making stagegies and on the other we just keep asking what’s happening with DC. Have you ever thought that the same has been happening within our dear manufactureres? Yes I’m talking about Korg and Roland. Both Legendary, both got their hits and misses, Korg’s volcas and Roland’s Boutiques created quite a strom among
both novices and experienced users. When it comes to 2016, Korg’s numerous ios apps, the export –to-ableton Electribes and even the minilogue remain fun and successful( don’t for get the Volca kick, coming in October). Whereas Roland’s “909 day” was actually not an impact as it claims to be, the TB-3 might as well be the only boutique that people likes ( you’re not gonna get a Roland tuntable are you) , the Serato-enabled DJ-808 in fact raises my biggest interest ( yes the KINK demo video does
stimulate me), we’re trying to get our hands on a demo unit ATM, hopefully there would be good news 這陣子，大定都被MARVEL

“C86” was the limited edition cassette tape created by an British music magazine NME, in the summer of 1986. It was only available through subscription by mail, recorded 22 songs from the up and coming independent bands of the era. It was also a follow up with the partnership between NME and Rough Trade Records, as a 5th year edition to their original “C81” “C86” remarks the fresh new sounds of the industry, their music styles reflects their rebellion towards the mainstream flow. The majority of the bands displays a raw jangle-pop, guitar leads all kind of aesthetic, it also features the shyness in the bands in reflection to their personalities, which saw the birth of the shambling scene (as described by John Peel) which has a direct affect towards the latter development of the British indie-pop and twee-pop. “C86” signifies an important development in the history of British indie music industry. C86 seems to have been built into a school of music rather than a label or a music style. Although the year saw the birth of vibrant, passionate songs from Primal Scream,The Soup Dragons,The Wolfhounds,The Bodines,Mighty Mighty,The Pastels,The Shop

James Chan @Love da Records How would you best describe the style of Love Da Records? It started as a distribution company, bringing in International music to the local music scene. Slowly morphed into a record company, helping Western bands break into the Asia market. Which local band do you think we should pay close attention to? All of them! What’s your favourite type of music? Everything, everything that has a beat to it, do not be restricted to just one type of music genre, explore all the possibilities. Any hobbies? After deep consideration, I would say I love doing nothing, it well describes what I am truly keen for! I would say that this has to be the most what I most enjoy doing, and I don’t see it as a waste of time, as I am enjoying my life. What are you most excited about now? I’m looking forward to
