It’s here! It’s finally here. After almost two years of waiting, Star Wars finally hits our screens and (fingers crossed) gives enthusiasts around the world the best Christmas gift of their lives. But not everyone is such a fan; in our A-Side (P18) we explain the hype a little bit to those of you who know less about the franchise, giving you a crash course on Star Wars and some conversation-worthy trivia. In our B-Side (P26), we interview none other than Nile Rodgers, the man responsible for Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’, Madonna’s ‘Like A Virgin’, Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’, and pretty much any other classic record you can think of. We’re still reeling from his performance at Clockenflap. Stuck for ideas this festive season? If they are trained in the ways of the Force, they can use it to do crazy flips through the air, use mind control, etc. Jedi: Knights of the Galaxy, trained to guard peace and justice in the Universe. Trained Forcesensitives. Lightsaber professionals. Sith: Force-sensitives who embrace the Force’s Dark Side for personal gain (aka, anyone with Darth in their name; anyone scary looking; etc). It’s easy for a force-sensitive to fall under the power of the Dark Side – those who are angry and unable to let go are more susceptible. Luke Skywalker almost fell under. His father definitely did. The Prequel Trilogy, consisting of Episodes I The Phantom Menace, II Attack of the Clones and III Revenge of the Sith, were released between 1999 and 2005. These films are often overlooked because of their bland dialogue and poor direction. However, (generalised to the nth degree), they follow the story of Anakin Skywalker (Luke’s father) and

a young Obi Wan (also known as Ben) Kenobi. The stories are set around thirty years before the story of the original trilogy. The Prequel Trilogy’s use of CGI, although not perfected, was groundbreaking. For the first time, entire worlds had been created on a computer. However, fans felt like any soul from the original movies was completely lost; the handmade sets that so many fell in love with in the originals had been exchanged for ‘cheap looking’ CGI effects. There was also huge backlash at Lucas’ character Jar Jar Binks, the floppy-eared, squeaky toy-voiced ‘Gungan’ (who you might have loved as a kid, but watching his character in episode I as an adult is headacheinducing). There’s an interesting theory that Jar Jar was in fact a Sith Lord - a hilarious concept until you YouTube search evidence and it seems like a fairly strong argument. FROM BOWIE TO DAFT PUNK, PRODUCER AND SONGWRITER NILE RODGERS HAS GUIDED MUSIC SINCE THE ‘70S. SO, WE DECIDED TO GIVE HIM A CALL. magine how strange it would be to switch on the radio and, 80 percent of the time, hear your own music. Would you switch it off? The feeling, for Nile Rodgers, is commonplace: “Why would I switch it off? It’s just a song coming up on the radio.” So involved is he in music that he’s all but omnipresent. Without Rodgers, we wouldn’t have Madonna’s Like A Virgin; David Bowie’s Let’s Dance; Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories; The B-52s’ ‘Love Shack’; Grace Jones’ Inside Story: the list is so lavish, so extensive, that there’s a fair amount of hand trembling as the phone connects with this man at his home in New York City. Rodgers views his life through rose-tinted spectacles. Famously, he grew up in a house of drug abusing (though loving) adults, and found himself homeless for some of his teenagedom. At the peak of the cocaine-fuelled ‘70s, he found himself addicted to the drug and admitted himself into rehab (the revelation occurred at one of Madonna’s house parties; he has been sober ever since). Nonetheless, his love for music kept him grounded. Over the past five years, he’s defeated aggressive prostate cancer, all the while churning out the world’s hits. His positivity and open-mindedness have been the reason behind so many of his strong bonds within the music industry, and have allowed him to adapt to changing trends. Nile Rodgers speaks through a smile. “I have to say that I have the best career I could have ever

imagined.” First, he launches into a fond description of an outfit he wore to Hocus Pocus actress Bette Midler’s annual Halloween Party some weeks before - “I had some really amazing Tom Ford velvet pants that were long, really sort of hippy tie-die bellbottoms, and also faux pony skin platform shoes, and they were burgundy and it was perfect!”. Next, he dotes on his pride and joy, his cream 1959 Fender Stratocaster, nicknamed ‘The Hitmaker’, the timbric strings of which have played in countless hit songs since Chic was formed. He dotes on the guitar like a lover: “It comes with me everywhere. It’s in bed with me right now, honestly. It’s just perfect; it sounds like ‘Nile Rodgers’, you know?” Ultimately, it’s music and its prospects that spring him out of bed in the morning, but, in his words, “You can’t detach the music from the people, because they’re almost always great. The artists that I work with, I trust them and they trust me. We just have a vibe.” His grin is more audible than ever over the phone as he adds, “Everybody I work with teaches me something. I mean, I just worked with a 13-year-old kid last week, names Liam Lis. This kid’s ripping on the track! He’s singing so great; it was amazing. And I just couldn’t help it, I tweeted out ‘Liam Lis is a true boss’, because he was absolutely killing it!” Of course, Rodger’s truly commercial career began with Chic, the notorious disco-funk supergroup responsible for a world-renowned plethora of indisputable classics, just

some examples being ‘Everybody Dance’, ‘Good Times’, ‘Le Freak’ and ‘We Are Family’ (the latter composed and produced by Rodgers and Bernie Sanders for Philadelphia fourpiece Sister Sledge). But Rodgers credits his years before Chic as the fundamental milestone in his career. “Lots of people think my discography begins with Chic - it even says it on my own website - but I’m like, ‘uhh, no!’ First I learned how to produce, which is how I was able to do Chic in the first place!” Rodgers grew up orchestrating and writing classical music; he attended NYC’s prestigious Juilliard School for Performing Arts, before signing up to join the Sesame Street band, where he would meet Chic co-founder Bernie Sanders. The band were eventually signed after a long and agonising struggle, but the height of their wonder years saw a sudden boycott of disco, which suddenly no longer had the ’cool factor’. Rodgers resilience to such changes in the industry have become a key factor in his success; whereas then he turned to producing rock and roll albums for figureheads like Duran Duran and Mick Jagger, the past decade has seen him circling the EDM honeypot, and spearheading groundbreaking releases such as the disco revival smash hit ’Get Lucky’ with Daft Punk. “Right now I’m working on two records that are really wonderful and challenging. The big surprise is my work with Laura Mvula. She’s phenomenal, because her music is based around a sort of extended chamber orchestra. Because I grew up with classical music, my bond with her is becoming scary.” A foundation in classical music has certainly supported Rodgers’ craftsmanship, but his success has also been down to a sharp ear for commercial fine-tuning. “The biggest frustration I have is [Laura and I] spend so much time talking about the high level of composition and time changes and theoretical points of the composition and I say to her, ‘Laura, that’s fabulous and

wonderful; I love the way you hear music. But now it’s my job to make other people be able to hear that in a way that doesn’t presuppose that extra level of musical education and theory on behalf of the listener’. The beautiful thing is, she’s writing from her heart, and it just happens to be that complicated and wonderful.” Naturally, Rodgers embraces collaborations with artists from less of a classical standpoint. In 2014 he produced Avicii’s club banger ‘Lay Me Down’, and only has warm words towards the EDM star’s approach to composition: “Avicii hasn’t had traditional musical training. A controversial figure, he intertwined art with eroticism, in a way so forthcoming that it revolutionised the boundaries of photography. Arākī studied photography at university. Though as if rebelling against the syllabus, sick and tired of artistic regulations, his post-degree projects challenged the very concept of art itself. He was obsessed with the concept of Eros (sex) - some of

his most famous works depicted the sex industry in Tokyo, capturing the vulnerable workers and their fetishist regulars. In simple point-and-shoot shots, Arākī brought the concept of voyeurism and eroticism into question as a legitimate artform. One of his signature projects, inspired by kinbaku, the art of bondage (literally, ‘the beauty of tight binding’), plunged further into the erotic, depicting naked women at their most vulnerable (genitals 「色」影藝術

ainland China’s musical future is an intriguing concept. In light of its modern history, the cultural scene hasn’t had too long to catch up with the myriad subcultures of the West let alone the explosion of electronic dance music over the past decade. A journey through the substratum of Shanghai’s nightlife reveals a rich clubbing culture, but the quality of music falls behind. However, chatting with UK DJ and producer Spencer Tarring on his newly-launched electronic dance music platform Pyro, it feels like it could be on the cusp of a revolution. “There aren’t many young producers in China making their own electronic dance music,” says Tarring, “and that’s because there’s no scene. There’s no opportunity. The best gig you get is becoming a resident at a club, where you play five nights a week, the same music every night, and get paid about 500RMB per month. It’s a horrible job really.” This is where Pyro aims to make a change.

It’s a user-generated, content based site and app, similar to SoundCloud - but less prone to copyright feuds with major labels. Pyro coordinates instead with independent electronic dance music labels and digital music distribution companies around the world, licensing an unlimited number of track downloads for DJs in China. No longer will they be ripping poor quality, outdated tracks off unlicensed sites; instead, for a small monthly fee, they can pick and choose from an infinity pool of freshly released dance music from around the world. Though the platform offers much more than just DJ material. Tarring’s key vision is to encourage more of China’s youth to create their own music. Through its personal upload feature, Tarring mentions how he believes Pyro could have the ‘Yao Ming effect’ among China’s creative youth. “The middle class is rapidly rising as a percentage of the population and they’re all looking for a vehicle to express themselves.” He adds, “it’s my belief that electronic dance music

Three years on, Grimes has released her fourth album Art Angels, recorded in Los Angeles after she relocated there. In addition to penning better and better pop, Grimes also infuses instruments like guitar, violin, ukulele and piano into electronica, marking a change from previous efforts. Opening neo-classical track 'laughing and not being normal” shows her singing in an ethereal, otherworldly and Elizabeth Fraser-like manner; the catchiness of electro indie rock track Flesh without Blood and the strong beats of “California” make for some cheerful pop; post-punk/synth-pop “Kill V. Even though Venezuelan producer Arca (whose real name is Alejandro Ghersi) is well-known for collaborations with Kanye West, FKA Twigs and Björk, his own works are so dark, unpredictable and experimental that it warrants the 'cult' label. The art and video contributions of London visual artist Jesse Kanda don’t hurt either. Mixtapes aside, Mutant is Arca’s second official album, and despite the nightmarish mood of each song, it already comes across as more colorful and varied compared to his previous effort Xen. 7-minute titular track 'Mutant' simulates the state of metamorphosis through restless electronic beats that create an atmosphere of horror. English downtempo electronica group Soulsavers only just released their last album, Angels & Ghosts in late October. It was their second collaboration with Dave Gahan, lead singer of legendary English electronic band Depeche Mode. Angels & Ghosts was akin to a solo effort on Dave Gahan’s part, with Soulsavers acting as mere co-producers; it hardly demonstrated Rich Machin and Ian Glover’s true talents. Constrastingly, this month's release Kubrick is the first Soulsavers album that strays from their tradition of featuring guest vocalists. Now that the group has broken away from the electronic music production that defined them in previous years, they go by the genre 'orchestral rock'. All eight instrumental tracks are strongly cinematic, and the title is likely a tribute to the film director. 沒錯，英國downtempo

It’s a delight to have Beijing electro producer Howie Lee release studio album Mù Chè Shān Chū a year after seeing him at Freespace Fest in 2014.. His music has been lauded as 'future music from Downtown Beijing', pushing the boundaries in bass music. In Mù Chè Shān Chū, which was recorded in Taiwan and released on Californian label Alpha Pup, Howie Lee explores the profound realm of electronic music by incorporating Chinese and Oriental music elements into modern electronica, resulting in a uniquely fantastical and ethereal electronic soundscape. He is particularly fond of capturing Asian percussion textures, and he collaborates with percussionist Zhang Yang on 'Sinka' and 'Shang'. I first came across Chestnut Bakery on a Sarah Records tribute album released on Shenzhen label BoringProductions. Diaries is a very promising debut, and while not everyone would agree with their proclamation of being “the most '90s shoegaze band in China”, it’s hard to deny the nostalgia that their sound evokes: slow, dreamy shoegaze full of reverb and jangly guitars. Spangle Call Lilli Line are no strangers to the indie electronic music scene; the Japanese band has released ten studio albums to date. The vocals by Kana Otsubo are subdued and soothing, almost as if she is muttering into the listener’s ear, which blend in well with the downtempo beats along with the occasional strings. The Complete Recordings is a compilation of EPs, splits and unreleased tracks from Indonesian act Sometimes Always, and it's a gorgeous example of bedroom pop done right. Hungry Ghosts This month's hottest band award goes to Hungry Ghosts, not so much for their future prospects as a group (they're dropping their guitars this month to pursue other things), but as a celebration of their contribution to our city's indie scene. Luke Chow, Tiff Laue, Mike Jack and Paul Lam have been gifting our city with an upbeat mix of indie pop and post rock since 2007. They're leaving behind their first full-length album, Hold Dear Forever, which they'll debut at Hidden Agenda on the 19th - an emotional show definitely worth catching.

YCC Juke Box I Finally Met New Order By: Yuen Chi-Chung

Clockenflap 2015 is over and all I wanted to specifically mention is the infamous New Order who rocked the finale stage of Clockenflap. They’ve kept fans on this side of the world waiting for three decades. Sod it, they finally came to Hong Kong and they were marvellous live. New Order’s last show in Hong Kong was held at the legendary canto nightclub Canton Disco back on the 26th April 1985. I was too young back then and missed the show. The only memory I had of their visit 30 years ago was their interview with the TVB Cantonese music programme “Enjoy Yourself Tonight”. I vaguely remember a live clip of their performance. Those were the days when music videos were hard to seek out! In the ‘90s, fans waited for the return of New Order. Rumours were running across the city like wildfire. The truth was there had been certain talks and arrangements among some sort of organisers, but the whole thing dropped eventually without any reasoning. It was like a dream came true at Clockenflap this

he pursued a career in photography by assisting some the world’s top photographers. By the age of 20 his own work had been featured in Dazed & Confused, which led to projects with publications like Rolling Stone, GQ, Marie Clare and i-D, among others. It was around this time that he cocreated Fucking Awesome with Jason Dill. In 2011 he premiered his feature length documentary, God Bless Ozzy

In the last couple of years, there have been a lot big changes in the skateboarding industry. The biggest shock is that one of the most famous skateboarding companies, Alien Workshop, shut their whole team down due to financial issues. Since then, a lot of skaters changed sponsors. Some of them even started their own companies, which was unheard of back in the days. Jason Dill, one of the ex-riders of Alien Workshop, set up a clothing line with Mike Piscitelli named ‘Fucking Awesome’ back in 2001. It was hardly a surprise that they turned this brand into a skateboarding company after Alien Workshop

closed down. With superstars Anthony Van Engelen, Dylan Rieder, Gino Iannucci on board, Fucking Awesome has quickly become one of the hottest skateboarding company in the world. But who’s Mike Piscitelli? Piscitelli is not a professional skateboarder, but a good friend of Jason Dill. He’s an award-winning video director and photographer. Raised in the San Fernando Valley, he dropped out of ninth grade to pursue skateboarding, hardcore music, and girls. He ended up working as an assistant on porn sets (behind the camera - not in front!), which inspired his interest in photography and film. At the age of 18 he moved to New York. There
