Mighty Genius Ltd. It’s been quite a month here in Hong Kong, with the eyes of the world watching. And it’s been quite the month in music as well, as autumn brings hordes of acts to the city. It’s with great sadness, though, to see Bassment (Insenses), one of our best live venues, go the way of so many great clubs over the years. This month in BOOM we’ve got Beijing indie rockers Nova Heart (P16), who are about to launch their new album. Check out our wonderful Chinese Hallowe’en inspired cover! Cardboard box-wearing Italians DJs from Mars (P22) are playing at Cubic and we have a great profile of Cassady Winston (P30), proprietor of fave underground venue XXX. As Aphex Twin (P42), one of the most important digital artists of the past decades, releases his latest album, we have a look back at his incredible contribution to music. Of course, don’t forget to read your clubbing horoscope (P14) for the month and if you’re keen to find out what’s the best of the new releases make sure you study Mixer (P48). On the Streets (P38) tells you what the hip young things are wearing and, of course, Fast Forward (P6) tells you which events you need to check out. Finally, don’t forget to see if you’re in Rewind (P54) this month, our round-up of the best party pics of the past month. So, whether you’re on the streets, in a club or safe at home, remember to enjoy & keep BOOMing.
Bassment(Insenses)逃不過多年內很多出色的夜場的命運。 無論你是在街上、派對,還是在家中, 希望讀者們繼續享受BOOM為你帶來的無盡資訊和澎湃! ong Kong is becoming an increasingly important city in the art world, so it's hardly surprising that the quality of artists exhibiting is skyrocketing. Miguel Chevalier is a huge name on the international art scene, a digital artist whose enormous canvases fill the façades of massive structures such as the Grand Palais in Paris or the former Sacré Coeur church in Morocco. Though no stranger to Asia (his immersive virtual reality installation The Metamorphosis

From 9 - 19 October, the exhibition entitled Digital Paradise will showcase his famous virtual garden concept known as the Fractal Flowers series. The key piece in the exhibition will be Fractal Flowers 2014, a 13 metre long piece that is regenerative. Chevalier has created virtual seeds using software that he developed himself. These seeds grow, flower, die and are reborn - a digital representation of organic life. Each time the viewer sees the piece it is different, and the software takes into account response to interaction as it constantly evolves and transforms. Chevalier’s interest is in the use of technological tools to create art. “It’s not because I use a computer that I’m modern. I’ve always preferred using the tools of today because I feel they offer such great potential in

opening new, as yet unexplored fields in the world of the visual arts.” His works question the use of technology and the status of art in the digital era - a theme that has been discussed non-stop since Walter Benjamin’s seminal essay ’The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction’. The interactive nature of Fractal Flowers questions mankind’s own role in genetic manipulation, and our relationship with nature. On another level, Chevalier’s monumental works also question the utility of art in the public space. With
his works projected onto the Fine Arts Palace in Mexico City and the Grand Palais, his digital art takes on the role of a technological successor to the great muralists of past centuries. At 13 metres long, Fractal Flowers 2014 is considered small for his oeuvre, but is still an artwork that imposes on the small spaces of Hong Kong. Students wishing to learn more about the artist are invited to a number of educational events and programs with Chevalier throughout the duration of the exhibition. Catch it at The Space on Hollywood Road.
Walter Benjamin的論文《The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction》後,人們不斷討論的問 題。

The 12 finalists were announced last month and this October will compete live in front of four of Macau’s most distinguished musical figures. The Venetian’s outdoor lagoon will be transformed into Mardi Gras in New Orleans, home of some of the world’s best jazz and blues musicians.

Other than the twelve competing finalists, there will be plenty of free live jazz for music-lovers. Rising jazz superstar Anthony Strong, 2013 Festival Champions Bleu Rascals and finalist Andy Frasco will perform both at the lagoon and in the worldfamous St Mark’s Square. If you’re interested in seeing the 12 finalists, they will be playing before the judges over the four days of the festival in 30 minute sets. The six shortlisted bands will then play in the final day showdown. The winner will be determined based on their style, improvisation, technique, musicality, performance as well as audience response, so if you’re a fan of any of the bands in the finals make sure you go over to support them. And if you fancy yourself a jazz aficionado, see if you agree with the judges’ decision.
This year, the finalists come from Hong Kong (3-0-3 Tango Fusion), Brazil, Portugal, Philippines, USA, Taiwan, India, France, Mozambique, Finland and Hungary and all will be bringing their own unique sound. With such a diverse roster, it’s an incredible opportunity for jazz lovers to see what the rest of the world is up to in this fiercely innovative genre. The judges are doyens of the jazz world: Xu Kui, a teacher at the Macao Conservatory; Antonio Cabrita, former director of the Macau Jazz Festival; Michael Cloeren, founder of the Pocono Blues Festival; and Tomos Griffiths, creative director of entertainment at the Venetian. With such a high calibre of both artists and judges, the third Cotai Jazz & Blues Festival is definitely going to teach you a thing or two about music.

the glorious history of Chinese watchmaking to the modern era. Intrinsic to the design of each watch is the distinctive case which hearkens back to the the Chinese pagoda at the centre of Su Song’s design. Like the four towers in the pagoda, the case is composed of four rings made of 316L stainless steel. In addition, each buckle pays homage to the grand history of Chinese astronomy. To understand the heavens, the ancient Chinese made use of armillary spheres, a series of nested rings rotating about the earth. The buckle echoes this early form of timekeeping with its spherical shape, representing one of the circles of heaven. This latest collaboration is with up-and-coming Hong Kong Formula driver, Matthew
Solomon, whose aim is to become our city’s first Formula 1 driver. With its distinctive red and black design and signed back, the CTK19 comes in a limited edition of just 18 pieces. An almost unique precision timepiece, it combines the best of China both ancient and modern.

This month will be quite unstable. You will suddenly be under a lot of stress, but someone will save you and please pay attention to your health For work please be careful what you say, after all ‘disaster comes from careless talk.’ To party you must go to LKF, and go with your good old friends, who you might find yourself needing a lot more then you expect. This month is going to be much better then the last, but stay low profile. Ladies will have many good opportunities to meet your Mr or Ms Right. And wear more items with silver, gold, and any metal accessories! This will bring you great luck and it will ensure you great nights out.

You’ve enjoyed two somewhat stable and good months, so this month you are going to be able to enjoy the fruits. You’ll get great karma from doing so much good before. You’ll find yourself financially in good hands, so make sure you invest well as this month will have good opportunities. Relationships will be eventful and you’ll find stability with loved ones. This is going to be a somewhat intense month for you, but this applies more to your mental stress. This might make you do something totally mindless, and make small unnecessary mistakes. It isn’t a bad month for relationships: you will get lucky if you are still single, but for those who already have a stable relationship it is good to remember to give your loved one some space. For a good old fashioned night out please hang out in the central LKF area, and make sure you go out by 10 pm.

Phew this month is more stable than last month! It’s actually not a bad idea to take a little break from all your work and stress. A nice short trip somewhere will actually bring you good luck! It’s also a good month to meet someone and you should hang out in new hip places. Hang out with friends that are in the year of the Pig and Rat, they will bring you really good luck, stay in Kowloon area, or places you’ve never been to.
This month is going to be unstable and a bit dramatic, and you may find yourself in a situation that you never wanted which may teach you a thing or two about human character. Party somewhere a bit further afield. In fact, it’s not a bad idea to head to Macau on the weekend, and wear darker and more subtle colours to party. Be out by around midnight, and bring a couple of good buddies along with you!

This past month has probably taught you the old adage: ‘a bad beginning makes a bad ending’ and this realisation will definitely come in handy for you this coming month. It’s a good month for your career and you’ll get some excellent news on this front. Existing relationships will be stable but if you’re looking to find someone it’s best to hang out in Causeway Bay. If you’re just looking into having a good fun night out make sure you wear the appropriate colours for good luck, orange and red.
You’ll be hitting two birds with one stone this month. What this means is that you’ll have good news and whatever you decide to do will reap twice the rewards. This may make you feel on top of the world, but remember to remain low profile and humble. Also, you should think about travelling more this month. For good luck, party in Wan Chai, or someplace you’ve never been to before, you’ll be surprised how much fun you will have! Wear bright shiny colours, and be out by 10pm.

What a great month for both work and relationships! What happened in the past taught you a very good lesson: ‘with justice on your side, you can go anywhere; without it, you can’t take a step.’ From now on, follow this rule. Also, be careful of spending too much this month, as you probably won’t realize it until it’s a bit too late. Go to Macau for a short trip as it will bring you good luck in relationships, or if you want to meet someone, wear yellow and red.

Yet it was her two years in Louisiana, spent unearthing its mystique, that stayed with her as she fronted Chinese rock band Free the Birds/自游, electronic group Pet Conspiracy, and now Nova Heart. When her family moved to Baton Rouge, her dad, who worked at Louisiana State University, found a roped line of animal skulls tied to the backyard fence of their house. Feng says removing them prompted two years of bad luck for the family.

She ended up training with a former student of Pavarotti’s, and finally completed a degree in classical voice. While you can detect the operatic nuances in her bewitching vocals, Nova Heart is more characterised by the emotion of the New Orleans jazz and blues she was discovering. While playing a show with Pet Conspiracy, Feng jumped off stage and tore the ACL tendon in her knee, one in a series of accidents that saw her break an ankle surfing and smash her jaw while jumping a fence. Bed-ridden with a mangled leg, she began to mess around with electronic music production, which was unwittingly the start of Nova Heart. Having recovered, she went on a final hurrah with Pet Conspiracy in Europe in 2010, having already decided to quit the group. It was on the tour that she began to meet with electronic music producers to explore the possibility of a solo project. Yet by the end of the trip, she still hadn’t found the right fit and gave up on the idea. Taking a post-tour break in Istanbul with Philipp Grefer, her partner and co-founder of label Fake Music Media, the couple fancied some nightlife after days of seeing the sites. A friend recommended they go to see Italian electronic/disco producer Ed “Rodion” Cianfanelli, who was playing a DJ set in the city. After the show, Feng walked up to him and asked him on the spur of the moment if he would produce her album. “To be honest, I didn’t even know if he was a proper producer and I didn’t fucking care,” she says. “I asked Ed: ‘Do you wanna do my album?’ And he was like: ‘I’ll think about it, I

Seeking to add more dynamism to the band’s sound, Feng called on a collective of musicians to record the new album which is out at the end of the year. In stepped Hedgehog drummer Atom, The Gar bassist Bo Xuan, and Free the Birds/ 自游 guitarist Wang Zong Can, who completed the recording but has since left Nova Heart. With busy international schedules to contend with, Nova Heart’s live show often includes different players. ”We’ve had substitute musicians from so many projects in Beijing, collectively I think we’ve managed to encompass the entire Beijing underground scene,” Feng laughs. Perhaps that’s why Sennheiser decided to sponsor them.

The name Nova Heart alludes to new beginnings, and when coming up with it, Feng consulted friends, who “came back with horrible names just to fuck with us… we turned down stuff like ‘Robot Sex Kittens,’” she says. Nova Heart is apt because it represents a massive break from both Free the Birds/自游 and Pet Conspiracy, “a reaction to the freedom of not being dictated by the limitations or the growth” of her previous acts. While the 2012 Nova Heart EP was carried by a disco/electronic sound, producer Rodion encouraged her to incorporate the skills and aesthetics of her bandmates on the new album. She also inserted her own influences from the films she loves. The result sees Morricone film score moods, the cinematic atmosphere of Roman Polanski, Stanley Kubrick, and David Lynch, along with the earthy textures of musician Nicolas Jaar. The result of this melting pot is that Nova Heart’s live show is painted in darkness, intrigue, voodoo and the occult. “We go for something that is a little bit more mystical and slightly demonic… We play with the idea of illusion, of being trapped in Alice in Wonderland and all the mirrors telling you you’re bigger and you’re smaller.” Feng laughs off suggestions that she should have an album launch at a festival like Nevada’s Burning Man. “Our trip is particularly dark, so I’m not sure it’s good for people on the wrong acid.” Seeking to capture the mood of cinema through music, Feng eschews props and visuals to “deliver that feeling of being on a drug induced journey into the psyche.” While Feng defies international identity, whether conceiving albums via Rome and Istanbul, or performing around the world, the Chinese indie

Legendary Rolling Stone Editor David Fricke went to watch HAIM with Nova Heart in support, and ended up writing about the latter, mentioning Blondie among other references. Next thing you know, Feng had become ‘The Debbie Harry of China’. So did that bother her? “First off, I do admire Debbie Harry, and labelling is going to happen,” she says. “At least they are not like: ‘yeah, she reminds me of a cracked out Britney Spears.’” Wherever she roams, Feng is drawn back to ritual and music as a substitute for church. “It’s a kind of communion and I think we have lost touch with the mechanics of nature,” she says. And in touring with Nova Heart, the voodoo spirit she discovered as a girl in Louisiana is alive and kicking. “We try to train ourselves to become so mechanical and calculating and it’s not natural,” she says. “It’s not sustainable, and eventually everything will be destroyed anyway.”

nforgettably dressed, with cardboard box heads wobbling fervently atop bounding shirt-and-tie torsos, DJs From Mars are the ultimate figureheads for DJs trying to make it to the top in today’s music industry. DJs From Mars are two Italians from Turin who go by the name of Aqualuce and Ventafunk (real names Massimiliano Garino, 35, and Luca Emanuele, 38). The pair met as producers at the same record label in Torino before embarking on a collaboration that would later land them at number 95 on DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs. Ever-climbing to the top, Aqualuce and Ventafunk have stormed across worldwide tours in Europe, Asia, and the Americas featuring most famously as Tiësto’s support in Atlantic City in 2011. What makes DJs From Mars stand out from the rest is the fact that, musically, they are wholly and unashamedly unoriginal. But not only do they embrace this: they use it to their advantage. After their initial shows together, the pair realised the crowds – as at a newbie DJ act show - would react better to their remixes of famous songs than to their own originals. Where other DJs would endeavour to veer away from this, Aqualuce and Ventafunk decided to capitalise on it. Initially releasing their own music in Italy, such as track ‘Non Dormo Più’, which
U
received a fair amount of radio play, Aqualuce and Ventafunk only saw real recognition with the online releases of their bootlegs. Trying to adhere to mixing old tracks with new tracks, the duo released online such bootlegs as ‘Oasis vs. AC/DC vs. Skrillex vs. Knife Party – Back to Wonderwall’, in which Liam Gallagher’s vocals and AC/DC’s guitar riff build and culminate in a Skrillex-driven electro breakdown. With the hype of EDM and evergrowing trends in sharing on social media, DJs From Mars soon became one of YouTube’s go-to feature artists and pushed twenty million collective hits on the site. What binds all the pair’s mash-ups together are the almost formulaic build-ups and drops that are failsafe in the context of a mega club. With no limit as to the genres they can explore, as long as they override the electro dance pulse that carries their sets together, Aqualuce and Ventafunk have kept their creative possibilities openended. This intelligent tactic worked wonders for the pair, who have been able to subsequently release their own tracks, such as 2012’s ‘Insane (In Da Brain)’ featuring German trance group Fragma, which has racked up over two million views alone and was licensed across the world. Such a propensity to appeal to the millions through combining popular elements of songs was quickly recognised by some of the world’s biggest labels. The pair soon found themselves commissioned to create remixes for names as big as Sean Paul, Pitbull, Sophie Ellis Bextor,

Before long they landed a residency at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, where attention from the likes of David Guetta, Carl Cox and Bob Sinclar blossomed. DJs From Mars have reaped additional popularity through innovation in marketing. Aqualuce and Ventafunk refer to their fans as ‘humans’, refer to their shows as ‘invasions’ and dub their two albums of bootlegs as Bootzilla 1 and 2. Perhaps most notably has been the release of two iPhone/Android game apps, also named Bootzilla 1 and 2, which upon completion of the uniquely designed tasks offer the gamer a download of each album. Though an app is not an entirely original idea for an artist, after names like Björk and Blur used the same tactic to promote their own material, the gaming aspect definitely is – and again, the box head designs appeal to gamers, whether fans or not. Is their success down to their music or their branding? The answer is not easy to figure out, but we can assume the characteristic box heads are just as crucial to the masses as their music. Such branding is not dissimilar to the likes of deadmau5, whose adoring fans pay to dance subserviently beneath the trademark mouse ears. Delving deeper, it raises the question of how far today’s music industry is simply the sale of a brand than bringing any actual quality of music to the audience. Though as a predominantly live act, it’s all part of the performance. DJs From Mars attract the masses because their energy on stage combined with the intensity of their masks drive the crowds wild. In this digital age and with the explosion of EDM, becoming a DJ is more accessible than ever. Technology advances shorten the

learning curve and coupled with a wealth of readily downloadable music and a little direction, you now have an express ticket to acquiring a DJ status. In our last Behind the Booth article ‘A Memorable Performance’, we talked about the importance of leaving an impression on the audience through a few simple tips to enhance your performance. Crossing that line into DJ/Producer will add even more flair to your performance by making you stand out with your own original
music and will always lead to more gigs. Most importantly though, it will open up an exciting world of new creative possibilities. So let’s break it down. What is a producer? A producer is a very broad term and can mean different things to different people. In its simplest form however a producer is someone who oversees a musical piece as a whole. Call it a project manager. In a typical recording situation the producer is the one who calls all the

professional producers out there who have spent years perfecting their craft and building impressive studios full of equipment. There are many, many levels to being a producer. So lets delve a little deeper and take a look at what makes a producer these days. Mash-ups: Taking 2 or more tracks and layering them together. This can be as simple or as complex as you like. A very common technique is to take one track and layer it with an acapella (just the vocals) of another track. This is a very quick and easy way to getting started as a producer. This can also be done in a live situation, just make sure the two tracks are in the same key. An example of a very complex mash-up was made famous by French teenage star Madeon. shots and has the final say on how all the musical elements are going to fit together. So how does a DJ acquire this producer title? Like DJing, technology has made producing affordable and accessible. No longer do you need a room full of expensive outboard gear. These days in the electronic music world obtaining that ‘producer’ title isn’t too difficult. You can start with just a laptop, some software & a good set of speakers. Now this isn’t to take away from the
Edits & Re-Works: Edits and re-works generally mean taking an existing track and adding/ subtracting elements to make it something new. These take a little more work and some careful structuring. This can be a lot of fun and you can really put your stamp on an existing track. Take a look at The Reflex (https://soundcloud.com/ thereflex), how he takes existing disco tracks and rearranges the elements to make a completely new and fresh sound.

Remixing is probably the most popular and effective form of production. Most artists and DJ’s will make a name for themselves by producing their own remix of a track. Take Norwegian producer Kygo for example who remixed some classic tracks like ‘Sexual Healing’ & ’No Diggity’. He’s only 22 and is now solidly touring around the world. Original music: Everything here is created by you. This is the most challenging form of production. It takes the most creativity and the most time. Not only is this challenging but it’s also one of the most satisfying forms of producing as you can truly say that everything is your own work. Every element working together to create an amazing piece of music. Here you really have to crank up that creativity switch and come up with something unique and interesting for the listener. The thrill of rocking a club on Saturday night with a crate of new tunes really can’t be beaten. But what if you came into the club with a crate of unique tracks? Tracks no one had heard before. Perhaps even one of your own original tracks. Imagine being asked “Who’s the artist?” and you can reply with a huge smile on your face…”I am”.

As night falls, however, he turns his focus onto other fields. The blue-eyed San Franciscan is better known to Hong Kong’s underbelly as the mastermind behind and resident DJ of XXX, Hong Kong’s household underground venue. He is known in this context as ‘Enso’, named after a symbol plucked from the Zen Buddhist art he studied in his Art History degree. So how does a businessman make a name for himself as a DJ in Hong Kong? Cassady’s DJ career was long seasoned in San Francisco, so launching a name for himself in a big

city was no struggle. Three years ago, Cassady began working with Heavy Hong Kong, curating an event called ‘Pimpin Ain’t Easy’ which morphed into the legendary Hypenasty at Volar. “My first gig ever, though, was at a restaurant called Twyst Minds, for Heavy Hong Kong. It was all dancehall,” he tells BOOM over a Korean lunch. Cassady immediately displays passion for the unconventional. “My favourite venue to play in is Ivan The Kozak, a Ukrainian restaurant next to Drop which is covered in tapestries. It’s quite unusual.” Cassady continues, “Music in an unexpected place adds variety to Hong Kong, in an ad hoc sort of way. I have [Heavy HK’s] Lai Fai to thank for a lot of things – he is constantly putting on events in unique venues; places like the Yuen Long ferry pier.”
Musically driven by an everchanging variety of genres, the most recent to have sparked from DJ Enso’s fingertips range from Juke, Footwork and Baltimore & Jersey Club to trap music. “Real trap music is southern hip hop,” explains Cassady. He describes his influences as Mad Lib, DJ Koshin, DJ Zinc, DJ Hype and DJ Craze, who he refers to as an “excellent turntablist”. The conversation moves onto the concept of EDM, at which Cassady grimaces. “I hate ‘EDM’ as a term – how stupid! Electronic dance music is everything – not just that stuff. What happens with genre is that it goes through a sort of refinement where you extract certain elements. What happens with a lot of genres is that producers identify the crossover elements that make the music popular, up the production so everything is

clean, put the drops on steroids, and eventually it all becomes the same. I once opened for Steve Aoki. I think his music is shit, but he is smart and has good showmanship. His music is just so…base.” Cassady cites Diplo as one of his main influences, asserting, “At least Diplo is eclectic despite being much more famous nowadays.” With an art gallery in mind, Cassady Winston set up XXX in the hope of creating a space that could also reflect the nocturnal spaces of Europe. “I needed a big enough space to be dark, grimy, and interesting: Berlin style,” he says. Once in the Wing Lok Street space where Premium Sofa Club now pulses, the new XXX thrives deep underground secretively on the Sai Wan side of Des Voeux Road West. “We moved the venue because the rent was doubling,” says Cassady, “and honestly, in Hong Kong you have to keep it moving. After a couple of years things here get old.” Moving the venue posed a number of challenges. The DAP signed a petition to disallow an alcohol license at the new location, and pasted a clip-art poster of a crossed out bottle onto the door for passers by to sign. Says Cassady: “The most important thing when opening a venue is that you need to be able to make noise, which isn’t easy when in a residential area.” But only the best sound system sits behind the soundproof doors that make this venue possible. “We actually have the same sound system that used to be in dragon-i. They refurbish their system every couple of years, so we have their last Martin Audio speakers. Because the new space is bigger, we had to add in some extra Quest speakers from Australia.” Furthermore, the almost hidden location, inaccessible unless by tram or long walk from Sheung Wan MTR, has limited the number of XXX goers. “We’re going to have an easier time

getting people to the venue with the Kennedy Town MTR; it will be right near exit B, the HKU exit.” So what events can we Hong Kong residents expect from XXX in the future? Cassady divulges plans for a curated audio event in the bathroom speakers: a sort of exhibition for aural artwork. “At XXX we encourage open minds, for people to show up and go with whatever’s going on,” Cassady shares. “Also, it’s all about adding diversity and variety to Hong Kong.” He continues, “I’ve been thinking about doing Sunday daytime events for Filipinos, and a weekly African music night. We’re trying to engage the African population in Hong Kong. There are lots of minorities in Hong Kong who are totally on the edge of
the nightlife scene.” He’s serious when he say he wants diversity. When XXX isn’t crammed with blue-rinse Cantopunks sporting ombré hair, tattooed sybarites, barefoot beardies and high-heeled bonne vivantes, the walls are adorned with photography and art exhibitions. But Cassady quietly disapproves of strapping art onto the walls of a single venue. “I actually think an art gallery is the dumbest concept, enclosing art in one space – but nowadays you need them. The true value of art is about changing the way you look, think, and experience everyday things. That’s why street artists are generally more important to me. It’s good to find art in an unexpected place, as with music.”

musicians like Orbital and Carl Craig, perhaps it really is time for something more ambitious, something ‘unique’ – to quote the Electriq literature. AKW eulogises over the space, but at such an early stage remains tight-lipped over who else to expect: “PMQ has never hosted an electronic music event before, so that makes it a little
unexpected I’d say! Most people got a bit of a surprise when we announced it as the venue.” Electriq partner and Clockenflap co-founder Tony Verb agrees: “There is the easy path for event organisers but with a predictable setting, which usually falls into the boring category for people that we are about to cater

It’s hard to avoid when you’re attracting established artists and hosting them at relatively upscale venues. And at $480 a pop that’s more than double what you would pay in Europe to see the same artist. Are they concerned about attracting wealthy, stiff-shirted types who can afford the entry fee but often know little, or care even less, about electronic music, while alienating genuine music heads? AKW is adamant that when it comes to attracting big acts from abroad costs must be covered – especially if they’re going all out on the production and setting. He does the requisite maths and confirms that costs will be ‘substantial’, while
Tony Verb goes into more detail: “The tickets are priced to cover costs only (if all goes as planned) and it just reflects the realities and the challenges we, and other promoters, face. The original plan was actually to make the PMQ experience accessible for many more people free of charge in the Marketplace and Courtyard (the outdoor area), but we were notified about some unexpected capacity limitations, thus it wasn’t an option anymore.” In a city obsessed with money and suffering at times from an overinflated sense of cultural worth, Electriq’s arrival may well be a blessing – just as long as true music heads feel welcome. Only time will tell, but given Clockenflap’s exceptional track record I wouldn’t bet against it.

Arturia Beatstep Controller this ipad ready controller could be a great addition to your home equipment set-up imply by looking at the specs, you can easily see that this could be the best HKD$800 or so you could spend on some equipment. I guess it really depends on how you going to use it. First of all, I need to clarify that the knobs are in fact rotary encoders, although it provides accuracy for adjustments for pitch etc (in sequencer mode). It’s really not for filtering and effects. In addition, since there’s no visual feedback from the unit apart from the lit-up pads, you’ll need to think in advance on how your scale will go if you’re on an iPad. But as an effective unit that talks fast to vintage gear, the BEATSTEP is really a nice choice, and the 16 steps sequencer does come in handy for drafting out ideas. (note that they’ve recently come up with a firmware update that means it’s even more powerful).

on the compositional process. This time it’s totally different. I needed to write the script and do all the organization, as well as seriously taking on the role of director. In the end, it took me two years to bring it to stage. I started on the project right after Home, Spring, Autumn, in which I experimented with video editing and narration. I guess both experiences informed 1984. I’ve expanded the female character from the original and made her a lead on stage, interacting with the on-screen male character. Plus I’ve got Rebreath playing himself. He’s a local MC who doesn’t read Chinese and he sees everything from a slightly different point of view. S: What should we expect from the music in 1984? N: It might be from my DJing background that I’m very much interested in collage/mixing. Hence I’ve injected a lot of different elements, from MC Rebreath to classical piano to traditional Chinese instruments
to experimental bass. Plus we use a bunch of different dialects within the play. Ultimately, I think we should be more adventurous, participate and involve ourselves in different kinds of dialogue, whether artistically or in our daily lives.

Aphex Twin
Smoke & Mirrors
olygon Window. Bradley Strider. Caustic Window. AFX. RDJ. GAK. PowerPill. The Tuss - these are just a handful of aliases belonging to the man known the world over as Aphex Twin. Born Richard D. James in Limerick in Ireland, his family moved to Cornwall where he spent his formative years, far from the metropolis and the madding crowd. And it was here, aged 11 - if his Wiki entry is to be believed - that he first began experimenting with synths and computers. A few years later, he began DJing locally alongside Tom Middleton before releasing his debut LP in 1992, aged 21, under the Aphex Twin moniker. The album’s title, Selected Ambient Works 85-92, hinted at material produced by a boy barely into his teens; it’s also arguably one of the greatest electronic records ever made. Fast forward twenty-two years and Syro, Aphex Twin’s sixth studio album (and the first in 13 years since 2001’s mammoth double-LP Drukqs under that name) is finally upon us. And while Syro may not be considered a classic (only time

will tell) it’s still a remarkable piece of work given the originality and pure expansiveness of the four albums he released between ’92 and ’96. Those who have been following his career since the early 90s will know that he has continued to release records and perform under various aliases since – sometimes openly (as in Prichard G. Jams or as AFX for the Analord series in the middle of the last decade), other times more clandestinely (with the album Rushup Edge by The Tuss in 2007). Over the years he has been known to play a festival set as Aphex Twin before slipping into a smaller room nearby to play anonymously to an unsuspecting crowd. He prefers it that way, given his status within the wider music pantheon. And perhaps, for him as with others of his ilk, it’s a truer and more honest way to exist as an artist - untainted by attention, fame, and expectation. But this is all deep-knowledge, deep-webbed, fan-boy stuff. For the unaware, the uninitiated, or the disinterested, it may begin to bore, to lag, or to weigh heavy. The aliases, the controversies (of which there are surprisingly little, apart from his forthright opinions of other musicians: even Radiohead didn’t escape his ire when he called them ‘cheesy’), the rumours (did he really live inside a converted bank in Elephant & Castle, and did he really own a working tank in Wales? – the answer to both seems to be a resolute ‘yes’) – all these have fuelled an intense interest in an artist who has managed to be many things to many people: the savant child genius, the arch provocateur, the disaffected teen who turned to music out of boredom, and the obsessive collector of studio hardware.
When he first emerged as a recording artist - taking his EP Analogue Bubblebath (recorded under the AFX alias in 1991) as the starting point - the rave scene in the UK was beginning to ebb after two years at full throttle. It was in a state of dismantlement as the police and authorities stepped in to put a stop to thousands of people dancing in fields around the London orbital. Acid house and Techno, imported predominantly from the US, had made a significant impact on the British electronic scene, and it was during this formative period that James started going to raves, experimenting with drugs, and channelling his entire history - his past, his future, and his present - into his a new sound. He has stated previously that while other music has had a significant impact on him, he sees little direct influence of it in his own work. And while there may be hints here and there, patches, snippets, he’s one of the pioneering solo musicians who is in a class of his own. Nobody else sounds like him (or looks like him, either). And just as the British producer Burial has managed to do since the middle of the last decade, that potent mixture of originality, a signature sound, and the eschewing of fame and notoriety have all worked to create art in its purest state. It’s art for art’s sake (except for his infamous 26 Mixes for Cash, which is exactly as it sounds). In terms of style, James has long been associated with IDM (intelligent dance music), but in reality the most obvious signs point to a maelstrom of gabber, acid, rave, hardcore, jungle, Techno, breaks, glitch, noise, ambient, and classical. Those genres have all been woven together in their disparate parts over the years only to

As an artist he can produce banging Techno like ‘Quoth’ as Polygon Window, the mindblowing ‘commercial’ sound of 1999’s ‘Windowlicker’ as Aphex Twin, the sublimely melodic simplicity of his solo piano track ‘Avril 14th’ from Drukqs, or the slow jam of ‘Produk 29’ from Syro. In many ways the latest album is a mixture of all those. But given that there is reportedly much more material on the way (and we know from countless interviews that he has hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of unreleased material) then this is potentially the start of another rich period. If ’92-’96 produced four albums in quick succession then what will 2014-2018 herald? What’s particularly intriguing about Syro, once it has sucked you in (and it does need multiple listens until you realise just how good it is), is that some of the material is some six or seven years old, maybe more. James is now 43, and the father of two boys aged five and eight. With old material on a new album it’s not quite the portrait of an artist now, but of the artist then. It has taken years of personal growth and evolution, compiling material for an album he must have known was going to get released out at some point.

And the very fact that Syro features the distorted voices of his wife and children (and possibly his parents) suggests that the family man is very much alive and kicking. His interviews are also less caustic than they used to be, and while insiders may lament the loss of his forked-tongue, he’s evidently a much happier individual than in previous times. To date, James has released an abundance of material, with potentially much more to come, and even started Rephlex Records as a vehicle for pushing other artists’ work (even if a lot of it is, in fact, his own). He appears to be the consummate workaholic, but watch or read any interview with him and he appears so lackadaisical - nonchalant even - that it’s hard to marry that image with the dedicated producer and technician we know. But like all geniuses there’s more than just one story. Multiple narratives come in to play, and none so more than with Aphex Twin.

It’s the typically stripped back dubinflected Techno that Germans in particular seem to fall for, but it doesn’t work either for home listening or for the dancefloor. The first time this reviewer was fortunate enough to listen to Noise808 was at a friend’s on Lamma. He recognised the sounds but couldn’t place the artist. ‘A new producer from Macau,’ the Macau-born friend told him, proudly. Given that the production output from Hong Kong is poor to non-existent (at least in terms of what’s actually being released – so much is evidently hidden on laptops) it was a genuine shock to know that there was a gem just over the water. This mini album picks up where his recently released sampler EP, Esclte, left off. There are a number of more traditional dubstep tracks that are

Fung knows how to appeal to an Hong Kong audience, but at the same time he does offer more mature tracks like, ‘ Talking More is Pointless’, featuring Mag Lam. The soft acoustics blend seamlessly with the emotional restraint of both vocalists for a pleasant listening experience. If you like über boy band pop, you’ll enjoy Jay Fung.

This Korean-American pop rock outfit is not without tragedy. Back in 2008 one of their members passed away and then the group went on hiatus for year until they rose like a phoenix and started posting up cover songs on YouTube that soon gained wide popularity. Soon, the rejuvenated and newly named band, Royal Pirates – consisting of Kim Moon-chul (vocals, guitar), Kim Soo-yoon (drums), and James Lee (bass guitar) – were picked up by a label and have recently released their full length album, Love Toxic. There are definitely strong American boy band influences on up tempo songs like ‘You’ and ‘Seoul Hillbilly’. There is a consistent youthful charm throughout the album highlighted by none other than heartbreak. Half the album is also in English and unlike most Korean pop acts, Royal Pirates has the pronunciation down.
Guan Zhe was struggling for the longest time to get his name out there by trying out at various Chinese singing compositions, but to no avail. It wasn’t until Malaysian singer Shilah Amazah sang a cover of his hit song, “Thinking of you Tonight’, on the mainland variety show, ‘I am a Singer’, earlier this year that Guan finally gained recognition. His debut album, Loneliness, is collection of songs he’s written over the years with an emphasis on East-meets-West RnB à la Gary Cao and David Tao. Guan can really sing and hit some tremendously high notes on gut-wrenching songs like,‘Serious Lonliness’ and “Even If We Break Up I’ll Still Love You’. There is a soulfulness and depth to his voice that gives his songwriting a much needed genuine touch; otherwise, his saccharine songs might get lost in the world of C-pop.
