Welcome to 2015! Presumably you’re all a bit tired and grumpy after the gluttony of Christmas, but Hong Kong’s music scene never sleeps! On our cover this month, we’ve got the incredible DJ Sasha (P14), who was one of the early pioneers of electronic dance music back in the 80s and he’s here in Hong Kong on 23 January. We delve into one of the city’s best-loved punk-rock bands, King Ly Chee, in our B-Side (P20), and learn about the joys (and pitfalls) of being in a band in Hong Kong. We also talk to Deer (P30), a band that formed in Hong Kong but originally came from Mexico, that’s starting to make waves in the underground scene and, interestingly, in China. We’ve got more music, of course, in Mixer (P40), with a review of the hotly-anticipated new album by D’Angelo as well as the latest offering from the newly-married Jay Chou. Flipside (P26) talks to the quirky owner of Premium Sofa Club, Lucas Luraka, and explores his little-known backstory that took him from the South of France to Milan to Dubai and finally to Hong Kong. Of course, check out our picks of the best upcoming events (P4), including the not-to-be-missed Future Music Festival Asia in Singapore in March (if you’re interested in going, do think about the amazing deal our friends over at Flight Centre have put together for it). We’ve got the incredible Belle and Sebastian as our cover story for February, but we’ve put it in Fast Forward this month just to give you a bit of warning for one of the UK’s most iconic and just plain lovely bands who’ll be playing KITEC on 10 February. As ever, have a look at Rewind (P46) to see the crazy stuff HKers have been up to, and have a look at the gorgeously shot On The Streets (P32) for our take on what ‘the kids’ are wearing these days. Enjoy and keep BOOMing!

當然不能錯過即將舉行的各大派對 (P4),尤其是三月在新加坡舉行的Future Music Festival Asia(如有興趣, 可參考Flight Centre為BOOM讀者推出的套票優惠)。 Happy Wednesday

Sweet Valley High

Horses and House music will make you party tHis January at Happy valley racetrack acing is the national pastime, and what better way to indulge this season than to fill in your race-card against some pumping tracks? For the first three weeks this January, Happy Valley Racecourse is taking you and your buddies on a trip down musical memory lane, featuring your favourite tunes from the 60s, 80s and today. There’ll be celebrity lookalikes (including Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga, hopefully in a meat dress), DJs and games with prizes worth over HKD80,000, all sponsored by the Danish masters of sound and home entertainment: Bang & Olufsen.

r

DJ Samir will bring music for all tastes to the race-track. When you’re not figuring out the form or wondering how those pari-mutuel bets work, you can check out the B&O Music Zone, which will not only feature fascinating photos from each musical decade but will also have the latest in Bang & Olufsen high-end techno-gadgetry for you to drool over and try out. Don't forget to dress up in your fanciest outfits and check out the video clip game where you can win the best prize - a Beoplay A9 Rosemaling Speaker (worth a whopping HKD21,000). All you have to do is prepare a costume which matches the decade of the night, and given the decades we're talking about it'll be a lot of fun. Then, once inside the B&O Music Zone, make a video of yourself full of your style and energy and upload it to social media for your chance to win. The best fan video from each week will win! Don't miss out this epic music journey!

The new album is an evolution on their previous work. While the lyrics are consistently quirky and wry, a melancholy poetry seemingly written by and for sensitive souls (there’s a song about Sylvia Plath on it), the music takes on a more muscular edge, influenced by the sounds of Detroit techno and the electronica of the 80s. If you’ve never heard of Belle and Sebastian, you'll definitely fall in love with this gorgeously original and intimate band at KITEC.

2014 wasn’t the best year for rats, but things are looking up this January. Things will become more palpably stable from this month in all areas of your life, especially when it comes to your relationships. In fact, expect some good news. Some simmering resentment might carry over from last year, especially feelings of betrayal by friends. As a result, to clear your head, plan a getaway to take the stress off. If you want to have some fun old times, head to Lan Kwai Fong and wear red for good luck.

Another fantastic month for rabbits, carrying on from an amazing 2014. January will see you start the year with a bang, so ride that wave to get the results you want in your life. You’ll also be getting more money this year! You’ll have some good news in your love life coming your way. But you should remember to enjoy a nice break once in a while, and balance your life with some healthy pastimes. For good luck please go out with your best buddies, and hang out in Central. Don’t forget to be out by 11pm!

2015 is looking much better for horses. There may have been some unpleasantness that lingers on, but the best thing to do is just forge ahead and forget about the past. You’ll find yourself with green fingers this month - for the dollars! - and this sudden financial acumen may help you in your career. Your love life may have got a bit complicated last month, but it’ll return to normal this month. Please wear red and purple for good luck, and make sure you party with your best buddies, as they willl bring you good news!

Sometimes, boring is good. And January will be just that: kinda stable and boring, but it’ll be good. You’ll find some unexpected help from someone elderly, especially when it comes to your love life. Just be careful that you might find yourself getting into fights, so remember that the less said, the better. Watch what you say at work as well, as you might not be aware that your brutal honesty can come across as pretty mean. Wear red for good luck, and stick to your close friends when you go out.

December wasn’t great, but January will start to pick up for the oxen. There’s a chance that this month you will see a lot of change, whether a change of home, job or relationship. The changes might seem sudden, but some will be very positive. In fact, remember to stay positive and most importantly be patient, and you’ll get some good karma. Go out more with your family and friends. For good luck, hang out in Wan Chai and wear bright shiny colours like gold and silver.

This is going to be a hard working month for dragons, and be especially careful with your money! You will find yourself having to deal with things that aren’t even meant to be your responsibilty, so prepare to be exhausted from all of it. In the end you will get good results though. There may be some minor issues in your relationship, but remember sometimes silence IS better! You will find yourself getting sick much more easily this year, so remember to let your body rest when you can.

This is going to be a very unstable month for the sheep. It is best to prepare for a lot of movements and changes, within relationship, work, and it is best to travel and very likely to plan or think about moving your home. You must be careful with how you think and try to control your emotions; it will be easy for you to get out of control, and might end up in a bad position. There will seem to be trouble almost everywhere you go, but remember that sometimes without the bad there wouldn’t be good. Wear yellow for good luck, party in wan chai!

For the dogs please be very careful about health as you will quite easily get sick - remember to eat well and avoid eating too much unhealthy stuff! It’s very easy for you to get into fights , and you might often feel annoyed by people around you. Take a break if you need to! It is definitely very easy for you to get sick or some random illness; be careful what you eat, and try harder than ever to be healthy this year - maybe it’s time to go and exercise! Wear blue and party in Causeway Bay for good luck.

It’s all about new goals this January, so you may surprise yourself with taking up a new hobby or even learning a new language! Keep yourself busy and make sure you spend your time learning, rather than spending your time with your head in grey, sad, depressing clouds. Make sure you eat well and rest up as well as the January cold may make you little monkeys a bit poorly.

You’ll feel well-supported by your friends this month, but even so, workplace gossip may start to get to you. Your love life is looking up though and you might finally meet that perfect boy or girl, but be careful of being a bit all over the place. Led by Riz Farooqi since 1999, the group hosted their 15th anniversary party at Hidden Agenda in Kwun Tong on 20 December, and debuted a new record, CNHC.

The release is the band’s seventh, and the night saw three classic King Ly Chee line-ups perform, supported by Singapore band Overthrown. The event was accompanied by a photo exhibition, the unveiling of a collectible box set, and a music video with several of the band’s close to 20 alumni, who now work across Hong Kong’s entertainment and media industries. It all started in 1994, when Farooqi, born in Hong Kong to Pakistani parents, went to university in America and discovered groups like Bad Religion and Sick of It All. Enamoured by the honesty of the music and humility of bands that would perform among the people, Farooqi came to the realisation that “you don’t have to end up on the Guns N’ Roses or Mötley Crüe route” of playing in stadiums with fireworks and mountains of illicit substances. He found that underground music in mid-1990s Hong Kong was limited by the selection at Tower Records, or music people brought back from overseas. While a 1996 show featuring Beastie Boys,

Luckily for Hong Kong audiences the group decided to host the anniversary here. And with the city coming off a summer of discontent, and the rise of youth consciousness, King Ly Chee’s message is more pertinent than ever. “What we try to teach Hong Kong youth is: don’t do what the mainstream is asking you to do, go find your own way regardless.”

Owner and resident DJ of the private space, it all began for Lucas when his well-connected cousin snuck him into the elite club scene of southern France. “I was fascinated. I’d go behind the DJ booth and watch the DJ for hours,” he says. “The atmosphere was fantastic, and I was like, yeah, this is what I want to do.” A few years on, Lucas had acquired a residency at a nightclub, with skills spawned from flea market decks and vinyl from Milan’s backstreets. An ever-expanding record collection yielded a curiosity for production, which he satisfied by meeting and collaborating with some

of France’s now notorious producers, Air and Daft Punk included. Lucas’ production generated a tumult of European interest, leading to a license under Universal Music, a bunch of releases on Café Del Mar and Buddha Lounge, and an explosive period of gigs abroad. “Producing music is a plus,” he claims; “I’ve had great gigs because of it. But I regret not doing more.” In 2001 Lucas moved to Dubai to start event planning, the time consumption of which slowly exstinguished his flame for producing music - though his zeal for better nightlife only strengthened. “I don’t mean to be pretentious,” he confides, “but when I got there, there was nothing to do except go to one of two mainstream clubs.” He continues,

boldly, “I teamed up with a PR lady and brought the first real house parties to the city,” – a believable statement in the context of the then budding metropolis. After a bad break-up in 2006, Lucas found himself introduced to Hong Kong on a year of travelling round the world, “Dubai was getting old, and I watched my clients slowly become my competitors. I saw Hong Kong’s potential straight away, and three days after I got here, I decided that I wanted to stay.” Though as a DJ, Hong Kong was not as easily accessible as he might have liked. “No one would let me play at their venue. After some time I managed to get some commercial gigs at the mainstream venues, but they paid peanuts and the owners

didn’t appreciate the work I put in. So I started my own parties.” May 2009 saw his first event at Zuma, which was a huge success. Namely through the persona of ‘Spaace Man’, the street roaming astronaut who would distribute flyers around the streets of Central with girls at his heel and a ghetto blaster on his shoulder, Lucas found significant progress through marketing innovation. Says Lucas: “That was kind of new for Hong Kong, so it attracted a lot of attention to my events.” But still, he found little satisfaction in the way venues concentrated on making money instead of throwing a great party. “At the end of the day, people only care about the money.

I’m in it because I want to do what I think is good.”

The Mexican Invasion all the way from mexico city, this classically trained duo is bringing a breath of fresh air to the venues of hong kong ormed just over a year ago in Hong Kong, Deer is the wonderful musical collaboration between Adriana Martinez and Miguel Bastida. Martinez studied ethnomusicology back in her native Mexico where she found herself drawn to and involved in the folk music of the overseas Chinese community. “I learned a bit of drumming, especially for the lion dance. I love Chinese percussion,” she says, “What I like about it is that it’s so powerful. In the context of the lion dance, it’s the sound of the drums that wakes the lions up.” Intrigued by this, she uprooted herself and decided to study for her PhD here in Hong Kong, bringing her long-term partner Bastida with her. Once here, though, they felt a need to start making their own music. “When we arrived here, we went to see a lot of concerts, in particular Blur and Sigúr Rós, and something just clicked and we said to ourselves we just had to start a band.” They spent the next two weeks composing and recording three songs and, liking the results, they decided to forge ahead. Now, they are constantly on the road, and have played dozens of gigs both here and all over China where they recently went on tour. “We played in some pretty small places, but the crowds who came were amazing and we were surprised by how appreciative they were of our sound,” says Bastida. certainly more open-minded about music is than Hong Kong, it’s easy to understand their surprise as their music is more trip-hop by way of PJ Harvey (one of their major influences) than pop-rock. That said, their backgrounds are in classical and folk music, so the dreamy, luxurious tracks they’ve composed are a distinct departure. “We played in orchestras back in

One of the most fascinating aspects of talking to Deer is their

outsider’s view of the music scene in Hong Kong. As Martinez puts it, ‘it’s very interesting’. So you have these two very distinct styles. The European, or more properly British, bands all grew up with a certain musical

background, like for them The Beatles is in their blood, whereas the Chinese bands have a very particular way of reinterpreting this music. For example, they extend the forms, so they don’t stick to the versechorus-verse tradition of European music. Instead, they blur the division, inserting melodies between them, for instance.” When asked where they stand, they laugh and say they stand firmly in the middle. “We weren’t English and we weren’t Chinese, so we started to experiment with both sides. It’s very hard to say which side we are on. Often people ask us what kind of music we’re making, and it’s a hard one to answer because we’re trying to do so many things that we like. Currently, we’re doing stuff that’s a bit more Latin, but before that it was more trip-hop or downtempo. That said, we’re now working with some drummers and more electronic music as well. After a year of working together and refining our music, I think we’ve finally found our sound.” With influences ranging from classic U2 to the pop strains of Britney Spears, from the wrenching vocals of PJ Harvey to the urgent rhythms of Chinese percussion, Martinez and Bastida have a huge musical repertoire to draw from and it serves them very well. Make sure you go and check out these true Hong Kong originals when they’re next playing.

hrowing parties is never easy when your dad’s not loaded and you don’t have all the cash in the world to throw around. However, there’s always that group of people who say screw that and keep pushing the boundaries anyway. Saiyan, who has led the drum ‘n’ bass crew Magnetic Soul (profiled in BOOM Issue 12) for nearly a decade, has been developing Bass Music China (BMC) in recent years. Luckily, I managed to hunt down this busy dude and made him talk about his ongoing low end revolution.

However, there is no one place to gather and promote them, so we set up BMC as a platform for people to have a peek into what’s happening in the China bass scene. We do guest mixes, features, event news on our site www. bassmusicchina.com (check it out!) and also throw events with international and local DJs both here and in China. We want to act as the bridge for both local and international bass artists and fans alike, and push things forward.

Who are your fav bass acts? Om Unit, DVA, Addison Groove, 6Blocc, Chimpo, dBridge at this moment. Burnie and Noise808 are also good producers from Macau. What should we expect from MSoul/ BMC in 2015? We will be celebrating Magnetic Soul’s 10th anniversary in 2015. It’s gonna be big! For BMC we are gonna collab with bass crews in different cities. Plus planning a few acts we really love and are excited about... keep your ears peeled!

Last but not least, you can export your creations in the EMX2 into a rendered wav 16 tracks Ableton project! Meaning you can use the EMX2 as a sketch pad then further edit your creation later on! D’Angelo’s new album Black Messiah was slated for a 2015 release, but given the protests taking place in the US since the killing of Michael Brown by the Ferguson police force, the artist and the label rushed to get it out earlier.
