Editor’s Note

The Team

It’s only early in the year, but 2015 is already looking to have fire in its belly. In the run up to Chinese New Year and beyond, this February is looking to be just as action-packed as last month. In this issue, we’ve had some great chats with some brilliant artists: Belle and Sebastian gives us a heart to heart in our A-Side cover story (P16); Daley Padley, aka. Hot Since 82 answers our Q&A in On The Decks (P30), and the terrifying Michael Gira of industrial rock band Swans takes us on a journey through his mind in B-Side (P22). Expand your musical horizons and peruse Nat King’s brief history of Miami Bass in BOOM Academy (P46) while Ollie Clasper and Charlie Tamoto guide us through the essential albums to check out this month in Mixer (P50), including Björk’s gorgeous new release Vulnicura. Remember to check out our Zodiac (P54) for your monthly fix of dos and don’ts, and our Fast Forward section (P6) guides you through the best ways to celebrate the Year of the Sheep in style, including the PUSH party at Volar, where tech house wunderkind Paul Woolford is set to take over the decks until the sun comes up. Keep an eye on our giveaways over the next month for a sneak opportunity to get into the elusive Go South Festival in March, and check our Rewind section (P58) to see if you can find any pictures of you and your friends rocking the HK nightlife. Any lovebirds out there can check out our collection of Valentine’s Day gift ideas (P14), and as always our On The Streets section (P40) showcases the trendiest February fashion among the cool young things of our city. Be sure to submit your own On The Streets photos for the chance to feature in our next issue! Have a brilliant February, and keep BOOMing! 今期的BOOM跟多位出色音樂人造了大大小小的專訪——Belle and Sebastian在A-Side (P16) 封面故事真情剖白;Daley Padley又名Hot Since 82在On The Decks (P30) 解答我 們的問題;工業搖滾樂隊Swans嚇人的成員Michael Gira於B-Side (P22) 帶領我們遊遍他的心路歷程。

Chinese New Year

Lunar New Year Fair

hinese New Year begins on Thursday, February 19th this year, but the excitement actually starts a little earlier. The annual Lunar New Year Fair set up in Victoria Park is both a fascinating tradition and, one could argue, the epicenter of the CNY celebration. Each season the park's large open area gets taken over by hundreds of small booths divided into several aisles. For the week leading up to the holiday, Victoria Park is a sea of people browsing merchandise meant to bring good fortune over the year. Especially after midnight on the final night, the huge area is packed with people walking body-to-body though endless rows of hawkers. As you pass by the stalls, a handful of workers will shout at you about their products and demonstrate the items in one way or another. There are all sorts of interesting objects to be discovered, some of which are a play-on-words in Cantonese, or are related to current events in the city.

C

This being Year of the Sheep, you can expect to find a diverse range of items for sale resembling sheep - from large inflatables to soft, cuddly, stuffed animals. More traditional Chinese New Year items include pinwheels, as well as plum and cherry blossom plants, orange trees, and flowers. Each is meant to positively impact a certain aspect of life, from love life to wealth, or health. In true Hong Kong style, the festival offers a huge range of cute things. Past products in this category include blow-up Chupa Chups lollipops, super-sized bubble teas, 'gai daan jai' snacks, and even plush toys in the form of popular apps such as Instagram or WeChat pillows! If you can stand the crowds (and usually, the cold), it's a unique experience. Pro tip: As you enter the market there are certain aisles that may be stuck in a total standstill. The smart way to begin is by winding your way along the last row, so you can avoid the major crowds and immediately jump deeper into the market. The fair

THE YEAR OF THE SHEEP ARRIVES EARLY IN VICTORIA PARK

begins on February 13th and ends in the early morning on the 19th. This is your chance to get your hands on the quirkiest CNY merchandise in town! Kung Hei Fat Choi from BOOM!

Three Bags Full CELEBRATE THE YEAR OF THE SHEEP WITH FABRIC RESIDENT PAUL WOOLFORD BEHIND THE DECKS AT VOLAR

eed a break from playing games of 'Fish, Shrimp, Crab' during Chinese New Year? Those looking to celebrate the Year of the Sheep in the company of a crowded dance floor can head to Volar on February 20th. DJ Frankie Lam's PUSH parties are one of the longest running club nights in contemporary Hong Kong. On Friday the 20th they will be hosting a special edition of PUSH, bringing producer/DJ Paul Woolford to Hong Kong for the first time. The veteran producer based in England has created enduring tracks across multiple genres including house, techno, and electro. Paul's music has been released by cult labels including Carl Craig’s Planet E, and Scuba’s Hotflush Recordings .

N

A regular at top dance music venues around the world, Woolford has held residencies at international hot-spots including Space in Ibiza, Fabric in London, and the infamous Panorama Bar in Berlin. A frequent experimenter in his solo productions, Paul often combines the crustiness of analogue along with an abundance of distinctly digital sounds. His approach has allowed him to dip his feet into a wide range of genres, with success in each. Definitely not one to produce flat, monotonous music, Paul Woolford makes beats that shift suddenly into high gear, or quickly gain momentum as if taking the listener on an adrenaline-fuelled, downhill ride. In 2006 Woolford produced one of those songs that can give you

goose bumps on the dance floor. Titled ‘Erotic Discourse’, the song begins with a nonchalant house beat and then builds into what can be a transformative experience. Rather than chasing musical fads, Paul hasn't stopped creating classics. His work ‘Untitled’ from 2013 is a balancing act that comes across as complex yet catchy, and ultimately results in timeless house. Played through a good sound system, with an in-the-know crowd, this is the kind of music experienced on the dance floors of sophisticated clubs worldwide. PUSH residents Frankie Lam, AKW, and Lukas will support Woolford on the night. With partygoers full of 'lai see' and 'Fat Choi' spirit, Volar should be rocking 'til morning.

《 Erotic

SXSW Music Conference And Festival

The Ultimate Destination for Indie Aficionados

13-22 MAR

SOUTH BY SOUTH WEST IS SET TO OPEN IN MARCH DRAWING IN THE WORLD'S CREATIVE CONNOISSEURS magine a small city invaded by roving gangs of Indie Rockers, creative techies, and film nerds - all at once. Add healthy doses of Texas style BBQ, loads of beer, and a hectic schedule of concerts, screenings, and parties spread out over ten days, and that partially sums up the South by South West experience.

I

Founded in Austin, Texas in 1987, and officially named the Southwest Music Conference and Festival, the yearly gathering has grown from a primarily music-focused event into something much more. The numbers speak for themselves – this year there are over 100 films having their world premier at the festival, and more than 2,000 regional, national and international bands will be performing. Attending the fest, your most difficult choice will be sifting through all your options! This March the attendance is expected to be close to 100,000 people, after 72,000 in 2014. SXSW is a cultural phenomenon, as well as a major marketing opportunity. Where the festival provides the chance for bands from around the world to gain widespread exposure, it has also expanded into a place where apps meant to reach a young, entertainment-focused market make their debut.

SXSW, which is set to take place from March 13th to March 22nd this year, is now divided into three sections - interactive, film, and music. As the worlds of music and technology continue to collide, the festival has become a leader in showcasing the possibilities of combining the two, offering a blueprint for the future. Each year, legendary acts rub elbows with obscure bands and young creatives of all stripes, forming a melting pot of talent rarely found in any one place at the same time. Last year, SXSW's entertainment included major names in addition to up-and-comers. The event featured performances by Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lady Gaga (who got vomited on), Cut Copy, Soundgarden, Kendrick Lamar, Tyler The Creator, and a little known band named Coldplay. If you're into indie music, film, and cutting edge tech, as well as regional American cuisine, SXSW is definitely the destination for you.

West、Jay-Z、 Lady Gaga、Tyler The Creator、 CutCopy、Soundgarden、Kendrick Lamar,還有一隊名為Coldplay的樂隊。

cottish both by birth and at heart, famously zany and thought-provoking in music and lyricism, Belle and Sebastian is the restless puppy of the world’s indie pop family. The sixstrong band has now been on the scene for almost twenty years - bar a brief hiatus in 2012 when lead singer/ songwriter Stuart Murdoch leant over into the film industry to write and direct musical drama God Help The Girl (2014). With no aim of slowing down, and a slight regroup of band members, Belle and Sebastian started 2015 with the release of their latest album proper, Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance, which has captivated millions of fans across the world with its change in direction. Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance followed a new direction comparatively to any previous releases. Taking on Animal Collective and Washed Out producer Ben H. Allen III as producer, the group’s efforts guide listeners through a dancier, sexier pop/disco sonic experience. Single ‘The Party Line’ fades in like a big room house track, before exploding into a happy-golucky roller-disco style anthem. A Belle and Sebastian record minus one or two pensive numbers would be somewhat out of character, and thus somewhat unsurprisingly the album is flecked with gentler, prepossessing tracks. ‘The Cat With The Cream’ is reminiscent of the folksy melodies found in more traditional Belle and Sebastian times, when tracks like ‘Piazza New York Catcher’ rose to fame as go-to bedroom tracks for young libertines. “I think Girls in Peacetime is quite varied. I think it’s maybe more varied than the last couple of

S

albums.” Keyboardist Chris Geddes - otherwise dubbed ‘Beans’ in light of his vegetarianism - is a founder and original member of the band, whose soft Scottish accent begins to piece together the songwriting process for the critically acclaimed release (it went to number nine in the UK charts). “I think we definitely didn’t want to feel that we had to make something that stuck to a traditional Belle and Sebastian; I think we just wanted to have some fun when we were making it.” When asked to define a traditional Belle and Sebastian songwriting session, Geddes replies, “I suppose the way we always did songs, at least when the band started out, is that it would all be based around Stuart playing the guitar. The rest of our instruments would enter one by one as the song went along. But we haven’t made a record like that in a long time.”

“WHEN THE BAND STARTED OUT, IT WOULD ALL BE BASED AROUND STUART PLAYING THE GUITAR.” Stuart Murdoch, the famed frontman whose tender and effortlessly bittersweet voice is part of the reason why Belle and Sebastian is adored by so many, is the creative mastermind behind the vast majority of the band’s repertoire. With time the process that drives the songwriting has changed significantly, though it still seems to be the case that Murdoch is the iron heart that powers the group. Geddes shares, “[Nowadays and for Girls in Peacetime] , Stuart tends to come in with some of his songs - some more fully-thronged than others - but generally we’re all in the rehearsal room together and we each have fragments we work on and jam out. For Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance, he never really picked up an instrument. He would know in his head what the chords and melody of the song were and would just show us little sketches of it. Then the rest of us would kind of just start working on the rest of the music.” Girls in Peacetime dips here and there into the orchestral sound that berthed emotions in 2010 album Write About Love, though Geddes claims the band employed a certain

amount of restraint with it in attempts to resolve the issues that came with changing the band’s line-up. “There was a vague intention - if not a kind of conscious decision - to be a little more self-sufficient on this one, and rely less on orchestral arrangements and stuff. There are one or two things on the record where the orchestration is still key to it but most of it is a selfcontained record.” Although Geddes does not speak of it as a challenge, the group faced a huge change when trumpeter, bassist and orchestral arranger Mick Cooke left the band at the end of 2013 - “on good terms”, as Cooke would later put it. “Losing Mick was a big deal for the band because he was in it right from the start, and losing his melodic trumpet solos means we go largely back to the old-school Belle and Sebastian sound. So not having his sounds as a kind of palette that we could use for the record is a change, and obviously a bit of a loss. But we have a new bass player, which has changed the dynamic a bit. In the past Stevie, Mick and Bobby used to kind of swap bass duties around between the three of them, and this time we knew that Dave, our new bassist, was going to do the bass on everything. Which meant Bobby and Stevie had more freedom to concentrate on guitars. Plus, having a real bassist on bass instead of guitarists makes a huge difference.” Successfully together for almost twenty years, it comes into question how Belle & Sebastian has dealt with constant commentary on the ratio between their critical success and commercial success. Says Geddes: “I think we can all understand that we’ve been a kind of underground success rather than a mainstream success. I mean, our music is kind

of quirky and left-field, and our lyrics deal with stuff that’s maybe not within the usual parameters of pop songs. I don’t think we’re under any illusion as to why we’re not as big as Beyoncé or something. I think we’re just happy and realise how lucky we are to have an audience who have stuck with us for a long time. Especially considering how hard it is now for a new band to gain a new audience.” Left-field and quirky indeed, the urge to question the meaning behind Belle and Sebastian album titles is impossible to suppress. Geddes humours the question: “I mean, the single compilation Push Barman to Open Old Wounds was just a bit of graffiti on a fire exit in a club that we used to go to, and I think we all

I think Stuart’s always on the lookout for a catchy phrase, or something that’s, well, quirky and ambiguous. Like, Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance almost sounds like some sort of cryptic crossword clue; it’s just a phrase that popped into Stuart’s head. He’s always got this notebook on the go, always writing down ideas.” Belle and Sebastian play at the AsiaWorld-Arena on February 10th, brought to Hong Kong by Your Mum & Hostess Club. Michael Gira and the Dark Minds of Swans THE ECCENTRIC OVERLORD OF INDUSTRIAL ROCK GROUP SWANS DISCUSSES WITH JULES O’BRIEN THE BAND’S REFORMATION AND NEW ALBUM, TO BE KIND aiting for a Skype call from Michael Gira is about as calming as standing on the edge of a sky dive. The experimental pioneer – now at the turn of his sixties – is one of the more terrifying and exquisite minds in the rock world. A mellow voice calls through: “Hello, this is Michael Gira speaking.” The calm resonance of his New York City articulation is unexpected, given the live performance grumble that pigeonholed him in the can’t-sing category of great lead singers, (not that he cares), alongside Mark E. Smith of The Fall and Sex Pistols’ John Lydon. His kindly milieu defies common preconceptions of a truculent aggressor, adopted after reading tales of his propensity to crush crowds’ stage-clung fingers under boot-clad foot. He would often dive offstage to clobber headbangers to the ground whilst caterwauling tracks with titles like ‘Raping A Slave’, tongue freshly laced in a young Madonna’s spoiling saliva. Though that was the 80s, and Gira, then yet sour from almost five months in Israeli jail for cannabis possession when he was 15, is now the grounded founder of Young God Records, with artists like psych-folk pogonotrophist Devendra Banhart safely roosting under his milky wing. He speaks with certainty, with myriad solo work under his belt alongside four years of new Swans material – the latest album of

which, To Be Kind, is arguably their best (and indisputably their most accessible) work yet. Gira is quick to point out that recorded material means next to nothing in terms of Swans – “you can’t even try to recreate whatever magical musical charge happens live” - but To Be Kind nonetheless defines the new musical approach pursued by Gira and his Swan-tourage since their reformation in 2010. A glut of band members orbited Gira between 1982 and 1998, when Swans

Angels of Light在2001推出 了《How I Loved You》,這跟Swans 那不安於室的《Soundtrack

rose to fame through seemingly unappeasable audacity in their music and live attitude. Their music ploughed through harrowing material that slowly - largely on account of Gira’s sidekick Jarboe Devereux – became more accessible melodically. Though with time Gira tired of and disagreed with the antagonistic reputation they upheld, and the era came to a close after tenth album Soundtracks for the Blind was unveiled in 1996 and, subsequently, touring ended two years afterwards. Gira went on to dip his foot into new territories – predominantly the lighter experimental project, Angels of Light, alongside another everchanging roster of musicians. The music showcased a reserved side of Gira unexplored in the Swans era: Angels of Light’s tender 2001 album How I Loved You and Swans’ unsettling Soundtrack for the Blind are essentially timbric antitheses. Though through - “uh, desperation!” – Gira reformed Swans in 2010. “Desperation, in the sense that I was in a place in my life where I’d been making music with this group Angels of Light, and it wasn’t really going anywhere aesthetically to me. There was this long history of Swans and I wanted to revivify it and try to drive it forward artistically.”

In the interest of working with a strong team, Gira gathered a lengthy list of musicians to help reboot Swans. “I needed people I wanted to spend time with, and of course people who had things to offer musically. Though I think the former had as much to do with it as the latter. We right away clicked as a group of people and that’s fortunate.” And so the current Swans line up was formed, in which guitarists Christoph Hahn and Norman Westberg, caveman-esque multiinstrumentalist/percussionist Thor Harris, bassist Christopher Pravdica, and drummer Phil Puleo accompany Gira’s bellowing voice. “[When we first spent time together in the studio] we would play one song I’d written for 12 hours, not just playing it over and over but playing it and trying new things and transforming it until it felt like a band song, something that needed to be played by these musicians in particular. Then of course it all came together as 2010 record My Father Will Guide Me up a Rope to the Sky.” Gira seems doubtful that the line up will change any time soon: “Right now this group seems pretty fixed, and I enjoy the company of these gentlemen and they’re contributing a great deal to the sound, so for now, yeah, we together are Swans.”

Swans’ first album Filth (1983) and 2014’s six-sided tome To Be Kind are comparative to the extent that Gira delves fearlessly into stygian lyrical matter. Where he once keened candidly over gang violence, rape (even necrophilia) and horrifying murder as societal metaphors, he now sings odes to little boys who ‘just need love’, getting laughed at mockingly by demonic cackles. The lyrics and melodies have flowered, but the sepulchral tendencies of Gira’s imagination have most certainly not been quelled by time. Though the album explores eroticism as much as it does darkness. Track ‘Kirsten Supine’, which Gira explains to be particularly important to him, alludes to a scene in Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia with Kirsten Dunst, where “she’s lying naked on this copse by a river and she’s just lying there, bathed in the light of that malevolent planet.” He continues, “To me that was such an apocalyptic image, but it was also extremely erotic. It just inspired me to write words; I didn’t want to tell about the movie but words just sort of arose thinking about that scene.” To explain the acrylic-painted baby heads pasted boldly on the front of the To Be Kind album (which many will have seen pasted all over Hong Kong), Gira divulges: “As is my

predilection – and has been since the beginning of Swans and my label Young God Records – I usually look for a central iconic image, to put in the middle of the square. This time I thought it was going to be a woman’s nipple. It was going to be embossed so it would have some tactile qualities to it. ”He laughs, “I took some photos and, err, it didn’t look good – it looked comical, which I wasn’t really inclined towards.” Gira ultimately decided on images painted by L.A.-based punk artist Bob Biggs whom he met in the 70s, whose “implacable portraits of babies” seemed perfect. He continues, “I think perhaps I thought they’d be great because they’re sort of an aggressive image – in the sense that the babies are in your face, but they defy interpretation.” As much as most bands’ latest album reflects most accurately their status quo, Swans’ To Be Kind, according to Gira, is already dead material. “Most of our material has been played live before it’s recorded; by the time the album is finished it’s just kind of dead matter. It’s hard for me to listen back to a recording and get anything back from it, so I don’t ever listen back to my albums.” Continues Gira: “we try to remain in the present, which is not an easy undertaking actually. We’ll be

No longer as violent as in the 80s, Gira’s aim on stage is to reach a total state of transcendence through music – achieved famously through earsplitting volume and total immersion in slow, intense build-ups. “We listen for what’s happening between us and follow new directions as they arise. When it’s at its best, our music is transporting. I would like people to experience the same thing that we’re experiencing. We’re kind of vehicles for something bigger than ourselves when we perform live.” Factotum Productions brought Swans to Wan Chai in January, and the audience was left utterly wide-eyed.

Cliché Records perches itself atop Queen’s Road West, with an almost symbolic view over a handshake between creative districts Sai Ying Pun and Sheung Wan. Inside the hushed confines of this office, the way Hong Kong night owls have been able to enjoy non-commercialised music has been majestically revolutionised. Cliché Records was born just three years ago, from the mutual desire between a group of young French friends to introduce their musical joies-de-vivre into Hong Kong’s LKFdriven nightlife. Now in the throes of 2015, the uber-cool collective has flowered into a multi-faceted establishment, boasting a tri-persona of booking agency, promotion company and birthplace of three record labels one of which, house/techno label Fragrant Harbour, will no doubt be a huge imprint in the years to follow.

Cliché Records took a different approach in the beginning, by booking larger international names as opposed to local DJs. “It’s only this year that we’ve got two rosters, one for international DJs and one for local DJs. We gained a name for ourselves by booking artists from around Asia, then getting asked by venues to help secure DJs from around the world. So that’s the story behind how we also became a booking agency.” Jean-François is the man behind the moniker Amadei, the charcoal haired DJ and producer who propelled the idea of Fragrant Harbour into action. Now, the Hong Kong-inspired label is set to take Europe by storm. An interesting point is raised by Amadei: “Nowadays it’s incredibly easy to set up a label. You’ll get a musician sitting in his bedroom, making a logo and banging it up with some music on Soundcloud and, just like that, he’s made a label. It’s just the problem of building followers and earning respect.” He continues, “With Fragrant Harbour we have been lucky. We already have contacts and followers around the world. The difficult part is creating something really top quality to earn that respect, so you have to be really on top of the game, from day one. What makes us different is that we know exactly the kind of artists we like, what music we want to take on board, and the brand we want to circulate. We say no to artists if their demos don’t fit our vision, no matter how big they are.” Although it almost goes without saying, Fragrant Harbour is a loving

homage to Hong Kong. “We all have a special story in the city, and everything started here. For us it’s kind of like looking through a sort of Asian prism; Europe in our opinion is the current centre of underground music at the moment, but we’re seeing it through this Hong Kong vision. We thought we’d push a visual identity by putting every bit of text on the vinyl in Chinese, and using photos taken by the actual artists when they visit on Hong Kong on the vinyl covers.” The cover for the first EP, Élegies by Renart, was taken by the eccentric Parisian himself when Cliché flew him into Hong Kong to play at their second anniversary party at KEE Club and Oma. Amadei chuckles, “Renart is… how should I put it… a stereotypical artiste. A few days before we had to send all the files to the vinyl pressing plant, he lost the original photo he took so we’ve had to slightly redesign the cover and print the photo smaller for our first release.” Though the EP is pretty and appears perfectly mysterious, with a whitewash image of city trees in Central tucked behind a grid of block white letters. Cliché has worked with a profusion of artists from around the world, whether booking them into clubs in Taipei or hosting nights at Socialito and KEE Club with artists

like Breakbot and French Kiwi Juice (who Samy has recently booked on the company’s biggest tour yet). But the artists they have taken on board seem to light up their faces at the first mention. For a label to be so passionate about their artists, not just in the interest of earning millions, is refreshing. “Renart means fox in French, but its the medieval spelling. I was interested in this guy because he does this very unique style of techno - not typical Paris, Berlin or Detroit techno, but his very own style. After a few months of gathering information on him I noticed he was on a compilation CD which is massive in Europe now, called Acid Arab, and I was so worried he’d be too busy after that but luckily I decided to contact him directly. Luckily I was able to book him in to play at our second anniversary party.” Fragrant Harbour is set to release two more works from different artists this year. Fulbert, the French house producer is next, and German wunderkind Ugly Drums later in the year. “Over the next five years I want to build a solid recognition for Cliché Records and Fragrant Harbour,” Jeff divulges. “I’ve been inspired by a lot of labels that I’ve been listening to, and hope we’ll build on that inspiration.” Keep an eye out this year for the FH launch party; date TBC.

Fragrant

Harbour

Hot Since 82

Burning Up BOOM HAS A Q&A WITH THE LATEST DJ/PRODUCER TO HEADLINE ONE OF THE LEGENDARY SMALL&TALL EVENTS: DALEY PADLEY, AKA. HOT SINCE 82.

ritain churns out top quality house music like butter, relentlessly infiltrating charts and festivals across the world with fresh sounds hot off the notorious UK student scene and beyond. BBC Radio 1 is the de facto birthplace for influential dance music, where Pete Tong, Annie Mac and their savvy colleagues dip their hands into the pick ’n’ mix and select the juiciest new names for late night radio. On the 17th August 2013, it was Hot Since 82 spinning a two-hour set on Pete Tong’s esteemed Essential Mix show. Within the first few minutes he left listeners in awe, pumping out a style of house music he had refined over years of hard work and residencies in his hometown Leeds, and Ibiza. From that point on, as both a brand and an artist, Hot Since 82 had hit the nail on the head. “Radio 1 is such a legacy here in the UK that it was pretty amazing for me,” Daley Padley, the man behind the moniker, divulges. The 30 year-old Yorkshireman is rarely photographed without a subtle smile on his face, and is notoriously chirpy in interviews. “It’s great that I’ve had the support of Pete Tong and Annie Mac in particular, but if I

“IF I STOPPED MAKING GOOD MUSIC, I THINK THEY’D STOP PLAYING IT, WHICH IS ONLY RIGHT.”

‘Let It Ride’ was released on Noir Recordings and hit number 3 on the Beatport deep house chart. Though as much as his music is pigeonholed as deep house, Padley’s mixes, in truth, are not tied down to any subgenre at all. Indisputably a house producer (easy enough to categorise from the thematic use of backbeat percussion patterns), his music has a multitude of elements that transcend the boundaries of subgenre. With subtle layering and innovative sampling, his mixes feature traces of techno and even sometimes a big room house sound; his material appeals to the masses in dance music, while managing to sustain an underground reputation. With a hometown that boasts a nightlife teeming with students, Padley questions how far they’re responsible for the success of house music: “I think it’s young people in general. Leeds has a big university and that definitely helps the vibe in the city, but it’s also full of locals who just love house. Manchester is another northern city that has the same feel to it I think.” Though discussing his hometown is close to futile, given his repertoire of tours and festival headline slots. “It’s hard to say where the hottest spot for house is at the moment. There’s so much good music coming out of Germany, UK, Spain and Israel, but also South America’s stuff is as on point as ever.” As well as rising to fame as an artist, Hot Since 82 is also the name of Padley’s own imprint, set up in order to accommodate the mass of quality unsigned music he was beginning

to receive. “I was getting sent so much unsigned music that I thought it was time to set up a label myself, so some of this great stuff would get released and get the attention it deserved.” Padley has so far released his recruited music on both his album Little Black Book - which featured original Hot Since 82 compositions as well as mixes by artists on his label - and 2014 compilation album Knee Deep In Sound. When asked about future plans for the imprints, Padley replies, “I just want to continue building the label with really strong club music. I don’t have any current plans to release full artist albums but you never know!” In his eyes, the characteristics of the artists he chooses to work with or mix for are a combination of energy, talent, and originality. “Firstly it’s all about how they play. Any DJ playing with freedom to go anywhere musically is important. The same thing applies for production of course; Maceo Plex is someone who in recent times has really raised the bar in terms of making music that sounds so different and fresh.” 2015 has already been a huge year for Padley, and looks like it will continue to be an extremely busy one. “Lots more music to come this year, so stay tuned,” he tells us. If you didn’t catch him at Club 18 on the 7th, check out his new two-part music video by Scottish filmmaker Ciaran Lyons to check out his style, and whack him on your playlists. Hot Since 82 is on fire, and it doesn’t look like he’ll burn out any time soon.

ailing from Austin Texas while spending a few years over in Europe, Mexico City, and Cambodia, needless to say Fry is an experienced “All Round Dude,” as his business card titles him. Inked up from his arms to his knuckles, his diverse collection of tattoos reflects the influences in his life that have made him successful. The inception of Boomshack had occurred in quite an unlikely venue – the first Hong Kong Tattoo Convention which he was involved in back in 2013. Fry partnered with Billy Pang, good friend and owner of Mong Kok sneaker spot Da Hood, who was looking to branch out into the F&B world. “I just had a booth with no name, but that’s where it all happened. I’m a huge fan of the food truck scene from the States, so I knew I wanted to do something like that, then at the tattoo convention the food started to evolve, I started to get an understanding of where I was headed, then by Clockenflap 2013 I had everything together. I had the logo, we had the chicken and waffles: it was a massive hit.” 2014 was then dedicated to looking for the perfect spot. “This is always the hardest part, especially with the rent being so crazy and everything

in Hong Kong being about location. I just wanted to make sure we had the right place, and I was willing to wait for as long as it took. I really love this location, the street, the pavilion back there, all of it.” One glance at the menu will tell you that Fry does not cement his culinary style in a single cuisine and flawlessly fuses two to three with ease. Ingredients can range from Korean kimchi, Japanese edamame, local char siu – and don’t even get started with the Mexican and Spanish ingredients. Of course, you got the Southern classics like chicken and waffles, or a Tex-Mex burger. But he shows utmost respect for local culture seen in the King Kong burger, which is as Hong Kong as it gets: beef and spam patty, bok choy, provolone cheese, and homemade XO mayo. “There’s a lot of Austin Texas influence here, but at the same time, I don’t ever want to be that expat that comes and tries to force my culture on people. That’s why when you look at the menu you got the King Kong burger, which is my HK inspired burger. I try to pick out ingredients that in my mind, stand out here. And all my local friends love this burger, I’m also doing char siu, but I didn’t want to go 100%

want to go in the family direction.” He recalls the massive success and positive reception from parents of the first time he launched a healthy kids’ menu at Maverick’s and plans to do the same with Boomshack. Fascinated by children’s drawings not bound by society’s norms, he plans to let the kids draw all over the walls with the launch. “At the same time on the late night side, it’s a place to relax and have fun away from the main street, a place for everybody, we don’t discriminate whether you’re a college kid or an older professional. Above all, the main thing about the place is that it’s a lot of fun.” Fuelled by a creative director with an impressive resume, the future of Boomshack looks bright. Fry plans to throw a block party this summer with both headliners and local acts, and if successful would become an annual event. He thinks ten steps ahead, as he tells us how he strategically built a larger production kitchen. He plans to open up small shops all around the city to deliver to straight from the main kitchen, as he’s big on consistency. He eventually hopes to open up the first food truck in Hong Kong which is in the works, but as for now Fry is content with it just being in the store. He finishes the interview with the following message to the people: “Just come out and try it, give it a shot. I think people will be pleasantly surprised. I have great staff, I do a lot of training, everybody knows how serious I take this. Again, at the end of the day it’s about having fun man.”

playing banal music, so I knew I want something different. After going to some local bass nights I felt there was a bit of a musical gap - I wasn’t hearing the styles I like being played much - so that’s when I established The Groove Thief. Later on I’ve found a crew [Paragon Sound System] with reliable like-minded promotion and performance partners, and a Thursday night residency at Oma, Pomegranate, and Baomass. What makes you stay in HK? Considering that this is not a really good place cultural-wise... Coming here was a bit arbitrary in a sense, so the city has definitely exceeded my expectations, and I’m still here due to the opportunities available in higher education. I disagree on the cultural point: of course the economic realities really put a lot of pressure on all creative endeavors, but that just makes their prevalence that much more impressive, there’s in fact a lot going on. However, it is true that a lot of concepts can’t gain traction here.e due to the costs, and the mainstream The scene usually seems to be just about profit, but still, HK has quality just not quantity How would you describe your style? Bass is key, but just because a song is heavy doesn’t mean it can’t have a full sound. That’s the magical blend found in so much Jamaican music. I do play mostly dub and reggae in a sense, but blend together in unexpected ways. Genres are just suggestions. With so many songs readily available: how

best to connect them for the crowd remains my biggest joy of DJing. How do you see the dub genre in HK? What makes you think we need dub here? There are so many misconceptions about dub. Roughly speaking, dub began as versions of songs without the vocals, which led the engineers to start experimenting with effects, the removal and alteration of elements, etc. With outdoor play on powerful soundsystems in mind, the natural progression was to bring the drums and bass to the fore while limiting the vocals so that deejays [MCs] could chat over the riddim. So dub is reggae, remixed using analog sound boards. That means the influence of dub is everywhere, including just about every popular modern genre of music. The need for dub itself comes down to respecting this foundation if you love music, you really ought to give dub a proper listen.

You do your own edits too - would you mind sharing a trick or two for the ones who wanna start doing the same kinda thing? Yeah, they’re necessary for when you have a song with a weaker section you’d like to remove before playing. Proper production involves assembling lots of tiny detailed ‘puzzle pieces,’ but with edits the pieces are fewer and much bigger. For me, that’s more satisfying. Just do what you want the way you want to do it. Failed experiments are usually more valuable than successful ones.

America’s sunny state, known for oranges and Disney World, was also the birthplace of a particularly raw form of dance music called Miami Bass. Though relatively little-known, Miami Bass continues to have a large impact on music to this day.

moving. The songs’ lyrics often had an anything goes (sometimes X-rated) approach, which became synonymous with Miami Bass. Similar to traditional hip hop groups, Miami Bass acts typically had an MC (or two) and a DJ. The scratching in Miami Bass music was often fast-paced (to match the up-tempo beats) and was a key ingredient of the songs. In fact, Bass legend DJ Magic Mike was a hitmaker who was often sought after for his clean, intricate scratching.

At makeshift outdoor parties, DJs would play uptempo instrumental hits by the likes of Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force, while neighborhood rappers would step up to the microphone and spit out rhymes. While New York hip hop lyrics began to get more political in the mid-80s, the emphasis in Miami was firmly on keeping the party

By the time these neighborhood DJs and MCs began to enter recording studios to put their sounds on vinyl, a shift in technology was underway. Instead of a backing band, drum machines such as the Roland TR-808, and samplers like the Emu SP-12, put the sounds from New York’s electrofunk songs at their fingertips. Unlike the laptop-based music sequencing programs of today, these machines were literally hands-on beat-making devices. INNOVATIONS IN EXTRA HEAVY BASS WERE OFTEN MADE BY ACCIDENT...

machines were being played just like a musical instrument. While creating instrumentals, Miami Bass producers zeroed in on particularly strong effects, and then intensified them. The genre essentially took the best beats and synthesizer sounds from New York electro-funk and built on top of them, adding heavy scratching, samples, and original raps, to create new, exciting works. Miami Bass pioneers include names like Jim Jonsin, Mr. Mixx, Kooley C, Jock D, Afro-Rican, Dynamix II, Maggotron, Gigolo Tony,

Luke Skyywalker, Gucci Crew II, MC ADE, The 2 Live Crew, Le Juan Love, and Cuban-American DJ Laz. As more artists began to record, one way of differentiating themselves was by competing on who could have the most bass. According to the documentary “The Bass That Ate Miami,” innovations in extra heavy bass were often made by accident. As early producers experimented and made mistakes in the studio, they discovered new ways to enhance the low end of the sonic spectrum. While much of Miami Bass music had initially been confined to Florida,

DIPLO, ONE OF DANCE MUSIC’S MOST INFLUENTIAL DJ/PRODUCERS, HAS HIS ROOTS IN MIAMI BASS a unique combination of factors led to a group named the 2 Live Crew having a breakout nationwide hit. With the power of newly emerging music videos, a knack for selfpromotion, innovative sampling, outrageous lyrics, and a great beat, the 2 Live Crew were able to achieve commercial success that had eluded others before them. Their biggest single, “Me So Horny” which samples from the movie “Full Metal Jacket” became a dance floor classic and a Billboard hit. “Me So Horny” reached number one on the Hot Rap Tracks Chart, and stayed on the Billboard 100 for 30 straight weeks (despite not receiving radio airplay due to the adult lyrical content of the song.) The 2 Live Crew’s major success however also brought scrutiny from authorities and culminated in legal difficulties, as their music was declared obscene, and later banned from record stores. Florida shop owners who decided to sell the record were actually arrested! Once mainstream audiences got a taste of Miami Bass, other songs followed, and even surpassed the success of “Me So Horny” For example, “Whoomp! (There It Is)” by Tag Team, sold over 4,000,000 copies and was second only to Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” in 1993. (This was due in part to the fact that with clean lyrics, the song could be played to wider audiences.) A number of producers – some dating back to the beginning of genre, have created recent international hits that continue to tap into the original Miami Bass sound.

Miami Bass Classics

Diplo, one of the most influential DJ/producers of the past decade, has his roots in Miami Bass. The Florida native got his start playing bass-influenced mash-ups at the now legendary Hollertronix parties. Diplo’s production technique, which has been tapped by everyone from M.I.A. and Beyoncé, to G-Dragon, often includes generous sampling and a cultural collage that rides over a killer beat. At its core, the style is a continuation of Miami Bass traditions. The massive 2008 club hit “Move Shake Drop” by DJ Laz, featuring Flo Rida, Casely and Pitbull, is a direct update on the Miami Bass partyrocking formula. DJ Laz was an early Miami Bass pioneer and a radio DJ who helped popularize the genre. Even Southern stars from outside Florida honor Miami Bass. Bun B, and the Ying Ying Twins song “Git It” from 2005, was actually a direct remake of the 2 Live Crew classic track “Get It Girl” from 1986. The well-known 2009 Pop hit, “Boom Boom Pow” by The Black Eyed Peas is another mainstream song that borrows heavily from the Miami Bass. Jim Jonsin, a Miami Bass pioneer, is still active in the industry and a major hitmaker, producing “Lollipop” for Lil Wayne, as well as hits for Pitbull, and Beyonce, among others. Perhaps the next killer beat you hear in the club might actually be part of something that dates back to a time of neighborhood block parties and the first drum machines. If you want to listen but don’t know where to begin, check out our selection of Miami Bass Classics. We dare you not to dance.

《Whoomp! (There It Is) 》就賣了 四百多萬張唱片,僅次於Whitney Houston在1993年的《I Will Always Love You》。

This was released at the end of last year, but it’s so refreshingly singular and original in its inception that we thought it worth reviewing in February instead. Irish artists don’t receive the attention they so often deserve (hence this reviewer’s slow awakening to The Cyclist’s existence), and it seems that he certainly is no exception. What stands about most this record most though is the sound itself: dusty, lo-fi, filtered, warm, and fuzzy. Its traditional percussive patterns point towards the more strict syncopated beats found in house and Techno, but his insistence on passing some of the individual sounds through tape, thus processing and reprocessing, has given it a texture that is visceral in nature. It may be too experimental for some (cheap, even), but it’ll make you move. ‘Tape Grunge Rave’ couldn’t be a better title, with

its old-school piano stabs bringing to mind the Chicago sound of yesteryear.

In true Aphex style the Cornish maestro has released a new EP that suggests it’s the second of two parts. But as far as things stand, it isn’t. There is no part one. More smoke and mirrors from Richard D. James. Last year saw him release Syro, his first full length in over thirteen years, and it proved to be an undoubted continuation of form. Both new and old in outlook no sixteen bars sounded the same - such is his complex and oft-schizophrenic approach to making music. And hot on the heels of that release is an EP that makes no bones about how it came to be. On 2001’s Druqks Aphex Twin experimented with computercontrolled instruments, most notably on the hauntingly beautiful Avril 14th - the two minute study on the piano that took fans by surprise in its

simplicity - and he’s done it again here. Any fan will snap this up immediately. Everyone else should too. It seems this is a man who will be around for a long time, and electronic music will be all the better for it.

The first thing you’ll notice on Björk’s ninth studio album are the strings, beginning with the opening track ‘Stonemilk’. By the time the melancholic orchestral number ‘Lionsong’ has kicked in it’s clear that as per usual it’s an album that is big in scope – musically at least. And while the main theme she confronts, namely a painful break-up, is wholly universal it’s also one of Björk’s most personal records to date, thus existing in both the general and the specific. It’s objective and subjective at the same time. In sharing this pain while wrapping it up in such a profoundly large sound somehow lets it free, and goes some way to vanquishing her demons. In true Björk fashion the record gets more experimental, and a little patchy, as it goes along. But her willingness

to push ahead with new sounds and styles is commendable no matter what the final outcome. Plus, lyrically, no word goes unnoticed; each lyric is unbelievably affecting, and if the music itself wasn't poignant enough, her delivery certainly is.

Officially the only ordained minister on the Resident Advisor Top DJ 100 list, Robert Hood comes from what’s known as the ‘second wave’ of Detroit Techno artists. For the uninitiated this may seem like an oxymoron (the sexual hedonism of the club and the puritanical leanings of the church?), but two things are at play here. First, the roots of African-American music lie in the church, while the old factories of the troubled Midwest city resembled spiritual houses; their cavernous spaces and rituals serving a congregation of workers for years. And it’s this sound of industry that Hood viscerally evokes in his stripped back minimal Techno. It’s brutal, cold, and relentless. But never one to tread the same ground, Hood also includes the disco re-fit ‘The Greatest Dancer’ as well as the spiritual house slammer

The Fabric series has now run longer than the legendary ‘NOW!’ pop compilations. That may or may not be true, but at some point paid-for DJ mixes seem archaic in a world over-populated with free mixes on YouTube, Soundcloud, and FACT – among others. Perhaps people still collect the actual CDs (replete with artwork) and show them off to their houseguests as a sign of devotion. The Edinburgh-based Prosumer takes charge of Fabric’s 79th edition - "I mixed it in my living room, using vinyl and a computer" - and comes straight in with a plethora of appropriately sweaty house tracks. Unsurprising, given his Berlin origins. We get new and old cuts from the likes of Chez Damier, Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk, The New World Order, The Knife, Tuff City Kids and Axel Boman, and the mix

doesn’t let up from track one to the last. For anyone who wants a feeling for what a typical Saturday night sounds like at the famous London club, this is well worth checking out. Best to stick on at the peak of a heavy night, or loudly in your headphones.

For the rat this February will continue to be a good month, and slowly finding your sense of direction again will make you feel very excited! For work you will start to see some light , and someone will show up to offer you some good chances, which will most likely lead to something great! As for relationships you might encounter a weird situation, where you feel like a stranger - to enhance your luck you must go party on the Kowloon side, and make sure you wear tons of red. Try to make sure you’re out by 9pm for even more luck!

For the rabbit this is going to be a good month for you. Not only is it a good start to the good year of 2015, but it’s also a good time to look for some good parties and gatherings! With friends and for relationships you will feel very popular, and it’s good to go to different parties for better luck. And to keep this goodness going please wear red, purple and pink, and be out by 9pm. Remember that friends are worth more than anything: hang out with your buddies more often, listen to their advice, and go find parties and events in Causeway Bay!

For the cow, this month seems to be very exhausting, since you have to be moving around and travelling to different places almost all the time, but believe that this is actually going to bring you good things! For work you will find some changes, but you will come to realise that it is time for a change. And as for relationships you must remember that couples usually fight, so it’s entirely normal to be in disagreement once in a while with your loved ones. Just give each other time! For good luck you must go to Central for drinks!

For the dragon it’s not exactly a good start of the month for you, but as the Chinese would say, ‘first bitter and sweet later’, meaning that no matter how hard it seems right now there will always be a good ending to it so just hold on and ride out the storm; things will get better! For work you will feel a bit stressed, and getting unnecessary issues mostly from your coworkers or friends. It’s better to make sure all the small details for work are looked after by you and yourself only. Be out by 11pm, and you should party in Wan chai!

For the tigers this month is going to be a bit more tough, as there’s going to be harder work in both your career, relationship and overall life in general, meaning there are signs of challenges and bumpy paths ahead. But don’t worry, as you will be learning a lot this February, things that will be quite useful for your future, and you will learn that sometimes you learn faster through hard times! For a good time please go to Central for parties with your buddies, and remember to wear blue and white for good luck. Try to be out by 10pm!

For the snake people, you will be seeing a very good start to this new year , which means finding a lot more opportunities offered to you, and remember to choose wisely and carefully - don’t get too overly excited! For relationships it’s best to keep calm, especially when you get into small fights with your partner, avoid it becoming something bigger than necessary! You might also easily get sick. Pay attention to what you eat, what you drink and most importantly exercise! Party in Kowloon for good luck and be out by 10pm!

For the horse it is going to be a good start for you. Things will only get better and better, and prepare to have more chances and opportunities opening up for you! For relationships it is also quite a good month - you may hear good news or good news is on its way, but be careful saying the wrong things to someone you meet for the first time! At work there will be small complications, and someone will say something bad behind your back, but best to ignore these things . For good luck wear yellow and orange, and party in Macau!

For the rooster, you will find yourself running around a lot this month, and finding yourself doing so not even really knowing why, which make you feel exhausted mentally and physically. In relationships you will find good news , but avoid small conflicts with your partner, or else they will feel quite fed up of the things building up to it . For work it is ok to feel trapped or confused once in a while, just remember to have some time to clear your head, because it’s a long road ahead. Wear black for good luck, and be out by 11pm.

For sheep folk this month is quite interesting and mostly joyful. You might run into someone that you may have already forgotten about, or someone coming from another country to visit you. For your relationship it’s best to enjoy and when there’s a bumpy road ahead, remain calm and remember to go with your heart! Work will be alright, keep up the good work. It’s like they say: “when you put enough effort in, you can turn steel into a tiny needle”! Be out by 8pm and you may go to a couple areas for good luck. Dress in pink or blue for good luck.

For the doggies this month is going to be a bit harder and quite stressful overall, and that’s mostly for your general luck. Work will be stressful, your relationship might be a bit rocky, but as long as you keep a clear head then you will be fine. For health be careful feeling unwell easily; take care and rest well! You will find yourself needing your friend’s help, and it’s ok to listen to their advice, because it may come in very handy.
