The Team

This month, the city transforms into a masterpiece. Art month comes early this year, taking over March instead of May. Art Basel 2015 arrives in style, and Art Central takes over the harbourfront, bigger than ever. Wan Chai hosts a number of private exhibitions for those with a keen eye for new talent, and HK’s classiest venues hold exhibitions of the world’s best up and coming names. Over in Sheung Wan and Stanley Market, HKWalls unleashes the world’s best street artists on exposed brick walls and shop shutters - check out our interview with the team behind the project in our Flipside section (P24). Musically, the scene is strong as ever. We catch Felix Buxton of Basement Jaxx for a chat in our A-Side (P14) before their DJ set at the Go South Weekender, and in our B-Side we catch up with London indie band Yuck (P20) before Songs For Children flies them in next month. Check out our round-ups of the hottest upcoming gigs in our Fast Forward section, featuring deep house rising star Robin Schulz (P6) and Norwegian polymath Erlend Øye (P4). In Boom Academy we take you on a journey through the history of Gangsta Rap (P38), and don’t forget to check out our Flight Centre deals. Peruse our travel guide to Jakarta in Play Away (P34), and, with our eyes set on Indonesia, we thought we’d sit for an interview with Indonesian eatery IR1968 in Boom’s Kitchen (P30). Flip to the back for our Hidden Tracks section (P45), for an exclusive Q&A with the February issue cover artist, health and beauty tips, your monthly Zodiac (P54) and much more! Happy March! Erlend Øye and the Rainbows

Technicolour Minds

17 MAR

NORWEGIAN MUSICAL MASTERMIND RETURNS TO HONG KONG WITH NEW TOURING BAND, THE RAINBOWS

orwegian singer, guitarist and songwriter Erlend Øye is set to take to the stage at KITEC on the 17th March, and there’s not a chance in hell that we’re going to miss it. If you don’t recognise his name at first, maybe The Whitest Boy Alive rings a bell - the Berlinbased band fronted by Erlend Øye, which took the indie world by storm with uniquely sparse guitar-driven anthems from 2003 until just last year. Kings of Convenience was his original project, resulting in three albums packed with bittersweet and addictive love songs, aestival jams and lyrical masterpieces alongside childhood friend Eirik Glambek Bøe. The gangly songsmith is one of the most loveable on the scene, with a wavy mop of mousey hair and signature thick-lensed glasses. Having collaborated with Röyksopp (providing vocals for 2001 album Melody AM) on top of his own projects, Øye has travelled the world with his guitar, including Hong Kong - on the same date - in 2011 with The Whitest Boy Alive, and is finally returning. His new album Legao, released in October last year, is his second solo release, after debut album Unrest in

N

2003. Recorded in Reykjavik, Øye collaborated with Icelandic reggae band Hjálmar. It’s a summer-inthe-park album with Caribbean undertones, contrasting deliciously with Unrest - which was essentially an electro-pop album. Rarely in any of Øye’s projects do you hear him stray from a gentle coo, but the timbre of his voice creates a dynamic sound that can make listeners feel pensive and cheerful at the same time. Such are the many talents of Erlend Øye, and we can’t wait to see what he pulls out of his sleeve at KITEC - chances are high that he will showcase one or two old Kings of Convenience songs. This is an essential show to look forward to in March; get your tickets now.

Robin Schulz

Making Waves PRODUCER AND IN-DEMAND REMIXER LIGHTS UP ZENTRAL WITH GRAMMYNOMINATED HOUSE HITS

13 MAR

eep house wunderkind Robin Schulz hits Hong Kong's newest club, Zentral on Friday, March 13th. The German native, who has already been nominated for a Grammy award, is not just a DJ but also an in-demand remixer and producer. Schulz has a proven track record for creating chart-topping songs, first scoring a hit with his adaptation of ‘Waves’ by Mr Probz, and later ‘Prayer in C’ by Lilly Wood & the Prick. His creative touch quickly brought both songs to the peak of dance charts across multiple countries in Europe. In no time he garnered transatlantic attention and began to infiltrate club music across the world. Schulz is a master at amplifying catchy bits of pre-existing songs. He finds cuts with earthy vocals and simple guitar riffs and transforms them with a deep house beat. The results are addictive deep house anthems, which have garnered tens of millions of views on YouTube and nearly 200 million streams on Spotify.

D

Robin recently teamed up with British singer Jasmine Thompson for the single ‘Sun Goes Down’, in which he contrasted her melancholic voice with a foot-tapping house beat. The song exemplifies the power of Schulz to make seamless, uplifting tracks from non-traditional dance sounds. Schulz’ most high profile remix to date is a slight departure from his previous material. Commissioned to remix David Guetta’s ‘Dangerous’, he incorporated a down-tempo beat and transformed the EDM ballad into a house track. The fact that his talents have been noticed by Guetta - one of the top producers in dance music, is a major vote in favour of his abilities. You can expect additional big-name collaborations to follow. In only a few short years Robin Schulz has shot up the ranks and had multiple successes internationally. This is clearly a guy on his way to the top, with a long career ahead of him. Catch what may be a legendary debut, as Schulz shows Hong Kong what he's got to offer.

Apollonia

Tech-House Musketeers PARISIAN DJ TRIO UNITES TO HEADLINE AT TAZMANIA BALLROOM

rench DJ trio Apollonia will be playing at Tazmania Ballroom on Friday, March 13th. The group members consist of Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom and Shonky, who first met each other in Paris’ lively after-party scene. Starting out as friends before becoming DJ partners, they now spend a large part of the year together commuting between the world's most famous dance music capitals, including Berlin, New York, Ibiza, Miami, and Tokyo. Diehard music lovers themselves, Apollonia took their name from a character in Prince's movie, Purple Rain. The group is best known for their lengthy three-person DJ sets. While it's common to have two DJs collaborating and spinning back-toback during a night, the prospect of three people performing over the course of one set is rare. Contrary to other groups, Apollonia consider themselves a single unit as they perform, rather than three individuals. In addition to their DJ acumen, Apollonia are also producers, recently releasing their debut album, Tour à

F

Tour, last October. Their original songs, which span various genres of house, contain fragments of vocals that add intensity and a rhythmic element to the cuts. Though their music includes strong build-ups that never fail to get dance floors moving, they never rely on using simple formulas. Listening to Apollonia’s music, you hear references to earlier house works as they occasionally pay homage to dance classics. The creative use of these earlier elements demonstrates that the members of Apollonia are both historians of dance music as well as artists. The group is made up of three guys who have haunted record stores for most of their lives. On occasion, they still play vinyl-only sets. On March 13th you can expect a large turnout of European crowds who may have caught Apollonia before in Ibiza or Berlin. If you’re curious what you’ve been missing out on in some of the more refined dance clubs around the world, Apollonia will provide you with a taste. Long-seasoned in sets at clubs like Fabric and Amnesia, the trio will keep you on your feet for hours.

ED SHEERAN

Work Hard, Play Harder FROM OPEN MICS TO BRIT AWARDS, UK STAR ED SHEERAN HAS ALWAYS GONE THE EXTRA MILE

10 MAR

edheaded Londoner Ed Sheeran is flying eastwards this month, with a squeaky new Brit award shining under his belt. In defence of the young lad, who gets a lot of hate in the world of music for being too commercial: he’s really deserved the attention, and more importantly, has stayed extremely well-grounded. Sheeran worked hard to get to where he is now. For over a year he spent every night playing at open mic events around London, and writing music in the daytime. Sheer determination, a cheery disposition, and of course talent in songwriting grabbed the attention of the industry - namely Jamie Foxx when he spotted the half-million hits on Sheeran’s YouTube video for ‘You Need Me, I Don’t Need You”. His perseverance paid off, and now his firey coif stands out confidently amongst the world’s biggest and flashiest names. His latest album, X, picked up two

R

Grammy nominations before winning

the Brit Award for British Album of the Year. It was officially the number one album on Spotify in 2014, with almost 500 million plays in less than one year. The album features singles ‘Sing’ and ‘Thinking Out Loud’, two tracks already slightly overplayed this year, for better or for worse. His knack for catchy songwriting is something we can look forward to for a long time ahead; it seems likely Sheeran will be a mainstay in the UK mainstream charts for years to come. What makes Sheeran likeable it’s his down-to-earth approach to superstardom. After he won the Brit Award on 25th February, he was spotted getting his drink on a little too much with fellow Brit pop acts at the after party. He’s a normal, fun guy who we hope to find hitting up LKF after his show. Sheeran plays at the HK AsiaWorld-Expo on the 10th, brought to us by AEG Live.

Spring Scream 2015

An Indie Experience with an Ocean View

13-22 MAR

CAMP OUT BY THE OCEAN AT TAIWAN'S MOST ECLECTIC INDIE FESTIVAL very year since 1995, Taiwan's indie music fans have made a pilgrimage down to the Southern tip of the island for a festival called Spring Scream. Scheduled to take place again from April 3rd to 5th, the 2015 edition features over 200 bands and DJs spread out over three days. The location of Spring Scream is part of its draw. Kenting, the small town near the festival, has some of the best weather in Taiwan, and

E

is a popular year-round tourist destination. In addition to the music festival, there are white sand beaches and hiking trails located nearby. For those with a spirit of adventure, Spring Scream actually encourages concert goers to camp on-site in the Kenting National Park during the festival. Founded by Americans Jimi Moe and Wade Davis, Spring Scream has become an important tradition that has helped small local bands gain wide exposure. Now in its 21st year, the festival has grown beyond music to include both film screenings as well as art exhibitions. The strength of Spring Scream is that it provides a showcase for both local and foreign talent. This year, the line up includes acts from Japan, Australia, Sweden, India, Czech

Republic, Switzerland, Singapore, Nepal, China, Canada, New Zealand, and the U.S., in addition to indie bands from all around Taiwan. Spring Scream is known for quirky, genre-busting bands and exciting performances. The diverse varieties of music showcased include everything from alternative rock and electronic music, to ‘foot-stompin’ folk and reggae - but overall there’s a general emphasis on indie music. This year there’s even a brass band lined up to play a set of hip hop and funk. The location of the festival inside Erluanbi Lighthouse National Park is scenic, to say the least. Spring Scream attendees spend the day chilling on the grass or walking from stage to stage, enjoying the ocean view. If for some reason you need a break from the music, several of Taiwan's top-rated beaches for surfing are conveniently located nearby. On top of great music, Spring Scream is also known for their food stalls that serve dishes from around the world. No two stalls are allowed to sell the exact same thing. In keeping with the green aspect of the event, festival attendees receive a discount if they bring their own chopsticks and plates. The festival also features rows of stalls selling art and music items. Tickets for Spring Scream are available in either single-day or multiday passes. A three-day festival pass entitles the user to additional benefits that include entrance to a pre-festival party as well as a post-event party. The full-priced passes are a little less than $500 HKD. If you’re looking for a festival with both natural beauty and a wide range of music, Spring Scream is hard to beat as an option.

ance music comes in many forms, but rarely does an act transcend the boundaries of time, much less carry beneath their skulls bottomless talents in almost every other sonic genre. Basement Jaxx, the seasoned brainchild of British superstars Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe, is a well-known exception. Sitting in his London studio, a downto-earth Buxton awaits our call, mind subconsciously ticking as ever with a plethora of creative ideas and opinion. “I’ve just been tinkering around on some bits and pieces,”

Though the pair’s talents journey into even greater depths. Now well into their forties, Buxton and Ratcliffe invest their time into unimaginably venturesome projects. Says Buxton: “You know, it’s good to grow old

gracefully in this world. You’ve got to keep challenging yourselves and keep moving the goalpost.” In 2011, the world saw the release of Basement Jaxx vs. Metropole Orkest in which Basement Jaxx’s classic material, including disco hit ‘Red Alert’, Rio Carnival-esque ‘Bingo Bango’ and Bend It Like Beckham football anthem ‘Where’s Your Head At’, was reimagined to be played by a 120-piece choir and orchestra. “We did a performance of that, then the wardrobe stylist for our live show came up to us and suggested we do a musical. I don’t know where it fits into the landscape of what’s fashionable, but whatever.” Buxton continues: “These kinds of things, creatively, keep me alive. You also want to kind of do something that’s relevant to humanity somehow; I just did something a few weeks ago with a contemporary choir in London, for Blindness Awareness, where the whole audience were blindfolded - to give people the sensation of being blind in public.” With such a burning flair in all aspects of musical creativity, it’s anybody’s wonder why Basement Jaxx keep returning to recording dance music. Their latest release, Junto (2014), returned to their roots in club-filling dance tracks, after veering into the territories of synth soundscapes and soft-rock in 2009 release Zephyr. “The climate of the world is basically what we were doing at the beginning, sort of mid ‘90s.,” Buxton explains. “The sound and styles of that era has all come back again. The fact that it’s gone

full circle means what we do best has become fashionable again, which is great.” Whether Basement Jaxx is a mainstream act or not is largely down to subjectivity, but Buxton admits the duo keeps an eye out for musical trends. “You have to be aware you’re in the world. There’s no point playing music at a party that no one likes. You’re not helping anyone. They’re not having a good time, and they’re not being uplifted. So it’s good to be aware of what’s out there and relevant. Plus, people have a kind of expectancy with Basement Jaxx shows; they’ve come to understand a kind of eclecticism, fun, and positivity. That, alongside a breaking down of genres with elements of Latin and global rhythms, and all sorts in there.” A recurrent theme in the Basement Jaxx catalogue is world music, which drives tracks from ‘Rendez Vu’ in 1999’s Remedy to Junto track ‘Power to the People’, which was recorded partly in Paraguay with a orchestra made up of children playing recycled trash instruments.

“There’s no kind of music that you can’t mix in together,” says Buxton. “A lot of rhythms from country to country are very similar, it just depends on whether it’s more orientated to folk or music of the people or commercial music. On Junto there’s elements of rhythm from all over the place. I did bits of recording in Kenya, Nairobi even in India.” The first signs of Junto revealed themselves with the release of single ‘Back 2 The Wild’ in April 2013. It took over a year before the rest of the album was released, largely down to the development of accompanying website, powertothepeople.fm, onto which anyone, in any part of the world, can submit versions of ‘Power to the People’ and create mixes from the submissions. “It was an important message we wanted to convey through Junto - that we should realise our connection with one another, with the planet, and with nature.” With such a long career in such a fleeting industry, it seems Buxton has learned some eyeopening lessons. Despite a Grammy nomination for track ‘Never Say Never’ in 2014, and a sold-out

show at the O2 Arena not long before, the track was rejected from Radio 1’s A-List. “Unfortunately, the people in the driving seats of these organisations can be quite agist, which is a bit old fashioned I think. They bang on about racism in the industry, but agism, sexism - all those ‘isms’ - are just as bad as each other. We’re victim to the radio system because they think we’re too old, but Radio 1 just controls things and that’s the way it is. You could spend your whole life being annoyed at the media, but there’s no point. I for one made the choice to avoid watching the news, because I think it’s important to take a wider perspective and not worry about what’s force-fed to you. There’s too much envy, aggression, and negativity in the media. People should listen to anything that speaks to them with honesty.” On Saturday 14th, Basement Jaxx fly into Repulse Bay for an exclusive set at Go South Festival.

MAX BLOOM, FRONTMAN OF INDIE GROUP YUCK TALKS LONDON’S ‘00S INDIE SCENE AND THE POWER OF RADIO ondon, back in the 2000s, was a metropolis of leather-jacketed indie bands. Curly mops flopped over fresh faces, slack-wristed lead guitarists sought the cleanest distortion crunch possible, and a peaking Pete Doherty seesawed between The Libertines and Babyshambles. It was the male equivalent of the mockney accents heard cooing from the red lips of Kate Nash and Lily Allen, when white tights and polka dot dresses collided with skinny jeans in the London underground. Max Bloom, frontman of fourpiece indie band Yuck, is one of the figures to have stood their ground as the spotlight turned from the fresh face of indie to the bejewelled behemoth we dub electro, which dug its claws in deeper and deeper as the decade turned. Bloom’s involvement in ‘00s indie London was through Cajun Dance Party, a five-piece high school group fronted by Daniel Blumberg (who know sits behind the sobriquet Hebronix). “It was never gonna be a huge, life-affirming project.” Bloom states, phone balanced between his cheek and shoulder as he posts a parcel

Obviously I chose music, which is why I’m still unfortunately uneducated,” he laughs. “I did nothing for about a year then put out the first Yuck stuff - then I guess carried on from there. And now the four of us are working on our third record - I don’t want to tell you the title yet, but you’ll hear some of its tracks at our gig in HK.”

Yuck released their first eponymous album in 2011 under American label Fat Possum, and have since enjoyed two releases, 2013’s Glow and Behold and 2014 E.P. Southern Skies. The Yuck line up now consists of Bloom, Japanese bassist and backing singer Mariko Doi, fuzzy-haired New Jersey drummer Jonny Rogoff, and a new addition: guitarist Ed Hayes. The band’s distinctive scuzz-pop sound has been critically acclaimed across the board, with comparisons often drawn between them and experimental indie pioneers Sonic Youth. “In Cajun Dance Party I wasn’t really the main guy, and what I wanted to do was form a band where I was the key songwriter. It’s very personal in some parts, but it’s more of a four-peoplein-a-room record than our previous releases - its heavier, but also simple, with less elaborate instrumentation.” As the world stroked invincible Nokias into LED tablets, and polyphonic ringtones slowly morphed into the spectra of an FKA Twigs album, musicians were sent on a pilgrimage from Myspace to the fleeting world of modern social media. Though one of the few platforms that stood its ground in terms of music promotion, according to Bloom, is radio. “Radio’s still really important. It’s quite an old fashioned thing - you know you don’t really need it with the amount technology has evolved these days, but it’s such an intimate thing. It’s stood the test of time because of that: you listen to someone talk and it’s almost like a private conversation.” Bloom has been presenting on a local London radio station, Hoxton Radio, for the past year. “I enjoy it because they let me come in and play whatever music I want to. It’s kind of funny waking up so early and having to pretend to be all chirpy, but yeah, it’s a great outlet for new music.” Bloom delves a little into the relationship between Yuck and radio. “It’s not that important to us whether we get airplay, because we’re not trying to break the Top 10,

Radio

you know? If you’re a really big pop artist then it’s quite important that you’re on the radio - especially Radio 1 - because if you’re not, your label will probably drop you right away. But with us, we’ve had good support from 6 Music and other smaller radio stations.” Continues Bloom, “I guess it’s more about making your own world and existing in a different world to the one in which the big radio stations thrive. And it’s a bit weirder in the UK because it’s a smaller country, and so you have all the big stations like Radio 1, Radio 2 and XFM, and then absolutely nothing except for 6 Music. I guess for us 6 Music is the only level at which a band like us can exist there.” Having begun 2014 on twentyvenue tour of the US, Bloom sings praises of the States’ radio system. “In America there are a lot more small radio stations that get a lot

of listeners, which means there are a lot more opportunities for a band like us to thrive over there. I think radio is much more important over in America than here. It’s the best source of new music, and each station and every presenter has their own identity and their own taste. In that way, it’s a nice way of finding someone you like and share in their taste and personality. I listen to a lot of college radio in America.” Yuck will be performing at Hangout at the Youth Outreach in Sai Wan Ho on 1st April.“The last time we went away with the band was probably last summer where we played some festivals, and so we’re really looking forward to our tour of Asia.” Bloom hazily recalls his last Hong Kong experience: “I don’t remember exactly where we went, but it was a bar, and I got very drunk.” Sounds about right.

The event took place for the first time last May, after long-brewed plans to help boost Hong Kong’s reputation as a go-to artistic hub of the world. Then just in the twists of Sheung Wan, HKWalls saw 19 artists painting live on 15 donated walls, bringing in an estimation of around 500 attendees. Though it’s not the numbers that count, Maria asserts. “What we’re trying to do is an event where anyone can walk through, and experience this art being made before their eyes. It’s for everyone.” Sipping a beer in Oldish Limited, Jason and Maria fill us in a little more on what’s in store this month. “We try to keep a balance between local artists and international artists. This year, we’re flying in artists from all over the world.” As a result of the team’s hard work, the timing colliding perfectly with Art Basel HK, a plethora of acts are flying in from all corners of the world, from Spain and Italy to Korea, Russia, and Thailand, to name just a few. “When the international artists fly in, they’ll be invited to decorate the shutters at Stanley Market with street art.” Novelty to say the least, the HKWalls team approached the community of Stanley

in hope of using it as an evening destination for this year’s festival. As the stalls in the market close for business at night, the metal shutters pulled down to the ground are already half decorated with street art. Mr Mena, a local artist, has been working on them late at night over the past month in preparation. “Yeah, some are already done. We painted those to get enthusiasm around the market so we could make it easy to persuade them to let us use their area. The people in Stanley are so friendly, they’ve been coming to chat with us while we work. Plus, it’s a huge impact walking through and seeing that kind of art spread along the walls at night on those shutters.” Jason asserts that there’s no complicated selection process in choosing the artists they fly over. “We essentially just choose the guys that we like. We do try to get people who have unique roots in street art - we get a lot of people applying who are fine artists or illustrators, but we try to reserve the spaces for people who’ve done work in the streets before – whose work won’t be displayed in the city’s fine art galleries.” One of the biggest challenges the team faces in preparation for their events is finding enough uncurated walls on which the artists can paint. A time-consuming feat, they ask around until they find landlords or tenants who are prepared to let them paint the side of their building or apartment. Maria explains, “What helps, is that we really try to carefully curate the works. We’re not letting random artists draw random stuff on walls. We put each artist on particular walls for a reason, and every wall has had a lot of thought put into it. Often – but not always – we allow the owner or tenant who’s associated with the wall space some input as far as which artist they like. We give

In the end that creative freedom very much belongs to them.” Hong Kong’s street art scene, according to Jason and Maria, is growing rapidly. Says Maria: “There are so many more people interested in it now. There are prominent street art festivals around the world, like The Wynwood Walls in Miami, which I suppose we aspire to be like. We’re beginning to notice the people of Hong Kong are beginning to understand the appeal a little more, which is great. Plus, the art community in Hong Kong is so giving. Because everybody knows everybody, if you mention you’re putting on an event they jump up straight away and offer to help.” The event begins on Friday 13th March around Po Hing Fong in Sheung Wan, and a block party will take over the area from 2-8pm on Sunday 15th. A closing party will take place from 5-10pm on Saturday 21st at Stanley market, where visitors will be able to watch artists finish up their works of art, with drink in hand and a coastal breeze guiding them into the night. The line up of artists painting our city this month spans from geometric muralists and photorealists to oldschool graffiti artists. For a full line up and painting schedule, follow HKWalls on their Facebook Page: HongKongWalls. We ask Jason and Maria if they have any tips on getting involved in the HK street art scene. Maria replies: “Pick up a can, and just start practising! Practise makes perfect. I personally can’t use a can at all, but I believe that if I had a good idea and practised every day then I could do it. But I think beginners should try hard to learn from watching other artists. Once you have your own unique idea or concept start working on it, and practise until you perfect it. You have to start somewhere.”

BOOM’S KITCHEN

Sate Sapi - Beed Tenderloin Satay

ever an easy feat for a restaurant to move locations, rebrand itself, and still be successful, IR1968 has defied all odds. “This is a new menu so if there is something you liked that’s not here, let us know and we’ll prepare it for you on Saturday and Sunday.” This is the message clearly printed on the front of the menu and this customer-oriented service is exactly what earned IR1968 its well-deserved Michelin recommendation. Formerly known as Indonesian Restaurant, which was located in Causeway Bay since (you guessed it) 1968, it’s almost been three years since they made the move to the new spot on the 5th floor of L Place in Central. Wooden countertops, vintage décor such as random soda crates and a hawker cart, laid back Indonesian music with ambient lights: the restaurant is the opposite of pretentious and lets you enjoy your food with an athome feeling. With an open bar that serves the most popular happy hour drinks as well as cooling Indonesian refreshments, IR1968 is a casual spot to enjoy good food and good drinks, with good company. The menu is centered on a wide range of traditional recipes that are bound to cater to anybody – IR1968 certainly does not hold back on portion sizes as well, so choose wisely or go with a group of friends willing to split the food (and bill of course). Meat lovers can

N

choose from a variety of satays (they recommend beef tenderloin) and dip away into sauce, or go for a full-on dish such as the beef rendang, which is stewed to perfection and topped with fried onions and coconut curry sauce. Vegetarians are in luck; IR1968 has partnered with Green Monday to encourage meat-free diets to improve health and reduce carbon footprint, so they get to pick from their own menu. Featuring an array of dishes such as fried eggplant, rice paper rolls, and tofu curry, the vegetarian menu is irresistible even to meat lovers. Whether you’re a meat lover, veggie lover, or both, be prepared to take your palate on a nextlevel adventure. The beauty of Indonesian cuisine is its complex taste that seamlessly blends sweet, sour, and spicy. Take their papaya salad for example, which seems simple, but lime vinaigrette and chilli peppers add both a sour and spicy kick to the sweet fruit. The dishes take your palate to a new level through through texture as well try the popular Gado Gado salad, a collaboration of crunchiness from cucumbers and crackers, flaky boiled egg, soft potatoes, and a creamy peanut dressing. You may have been lucky enough to trip out to Indonesia for a firsthand gastronomic experience of cart-sold street food and gourmet dining, but for thankfully for those of us who haven’t, there’s IR1968.

They use different kinds of eye-catching infused spirits in most of their drinks, and such art-meetsscience mixology has successfully drawn the pickiest of customers into the bar & restaurant. Jakarta might not seem like a first-choice destination when it comes to South East Asia. Gangsta Rap and the legend of N.W.A. WERE N.W.A. KEEPING IT REAL OR PANDERING TO STEREOTYPES?

ong before Beats By Dre existed, Andre Young, also known as Dr. Dre, was famous for being the co-founder and producer of controversial rap group N.W.A. In 1987 N.W.A. burst onto the hip hop scene with songs that detailed a life of crime, sex, drugs, and violence in inner city Los Angeles. Made up of members Eazy-E, Dr Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren, and DJ Yella, N.W.A. was once referred to as “the world’s most dangerous group,” and were even profiled by the F.B.I. Their raps, which featured graphic stories told in Southern California slang, helped popularize a subgenre of hip hop known as Gangsta rap. Despite being initially banned from both the radio and MTV, the group eventually sold millions of units. N.W.A. was back in the spotlight in February as a trailer for the upcoming film Straight Outta Compton was released during the Grammy Awards. The biopic, which is named after their debut album, tells the story of the influential group who brought their music from the streets of Compton, California, to the world. Although the hustler, or ‘gangster’ character has long been a part of African-American music, the modern blueprint for Gangsta rap was actually a 1985 song called ‘P.S.K.’ by Philadelphia-based rapper

L

038

BOOM MAGAZINE

Schoolly D. In the early days, before rap was allowed on mainstream radio (and long before the Internet), ‘P.S.K.’ was a major underground hit. The song featured an X-rated rap about street life over thundering beats and rhythmic scratching. Importantly, it also originated a distinct singsong style of rhyming. Hearing ‘P.S.K.’ in a club, West Coast rap pioneer Ice T was so impressed that he decided to mimic Schoolly D’s style in his own song. In 1986, Ice T recorded ‘6 In The Mornin’’, in which the lyrics as well as the rhyme flow were influenced by ‘P.S.K.’ These same two elements became important building blocks for the Gangsta rap genre. The distinct singsong vocal pattern and uncut lyrics about street life appeared in the 1987 classics ‘Boyz N The Hood’ by Eazy-E, and the N.W.A. hit ‘Dopeman’. The urban life pictured in the music of N.W.A. was more raw and graphic than any of their predecessors. Their raps also used more local slang,

Gangsta Rap Classics which gave them a certain amount of street cred and authenticity. Motivation for making this explicit type of music came in part from the pre-N.W.A. days when Dr. Dre teamed up with rapper Ice Cube to create spoofs of popular songs. The two had a routine based on the well-known Run D.M.C. song ‘My Adidas’, which they changed into a song called ‘My Penis’. When performed live the song drove crowds wild, and became an inspiration for creating songs geared towards adult topics. On the West Coast, N.W.A. were embraced due to the presumed ‘realness’ of their songs. In thick California slang, they colorfully captured local topics including L.A.’s gang and car culture. Straight Outta

Compton, released by N.W.A. in 1988, is now considered a classic album, but at the time it didn’t have a big impact in hip hop’s hometown. New York, which was the birthplace of hip hop, didn’t think much of West Coast rap, particularly the Gangsta rap genre. The East Coast scene of the time didn’t even feature cursing on records, so many found the lyrics by N.W.A. rather simplistic, and borderline ignorant. By comparison, the sounds coming out of New York, with artists like Eric B and Rakim, Boogie Down Productions, Big Daddy Kane, and Public Enemy, were far more advanced. To many, the West Coast raps of N.W.A. came across as unsophisticated and pandering to stereotypes. Filmmaker Spike Lee summed up the feeling when he compared gangster rappers to “Minstrel Shows,” committing the lyrical equivalent of dressing up in black face and performing for white audiences. The general opinion on the East Coast was that the success of Gangsta Rap relied in part on selling

a fantasy world of guns, sex. and violence to subruban audiences. As N.W.A. began to reach wider audiences through music videos and clean versions of their songs, they continued to grow in popularity. However, as the group became more successful, money became a dividing factor between the crew. First, core member Ice Cube left the group, followed by Dr Dre. Without its top lyricist and producer, the group wasn’t nearly as strong. Over the next few years, N.W.A. members were publicly at odds with each other and traded insults in a series of ‘diss’ songs and music videos. With the sudden death of founding member Eazy-E in 1995, the group ceased to exist, however the Gangsta Rap genre became a permanent fixture in hip hop. While the lyrics of N.W.A. today no longer have the same shock value that they once had, their message on the simmering conditions of every day life in South Central Los Angeles proved to be prescient. The feature film Straight Outta Compton will be released in theaters in August 2015.

DRAKE IF YOU’RE READING THIS IT’S TOO LATE

THE RACE FOR SPACE Release Date 發行日期: 23 Feb 2015 Label 出版商: Test Card Recordings

Adrenaline-fueled, fearless, and highly thought-provoking, British duo Public Service Broadcasting has hit home with their musical documentation of the U.S-Soviet Race for Space from 1955-1972. It’s been a painful wait since they emerged with first indie-meets-history album InformEducate-Entertain in 2013. Race for Space catalogues us through voice snippets from the most important moments in the tense climb to victory, from the tragic fire in Apollo 1 (‘Fire in the Cockpit’) to James Bond theme tune-esque tribute to the world’s first cosmonaut ‘Gargarin’. The music follows a pattern of responding to tension with synth pads, and adrenaline with brass interjections. Highlight aside from 'Gargarin', is 'Go' the fast-paced tune about the first moon landing in 1969.

Drake’s self-produced album has already broken records, with each track of the 17-strong compilation charting on the Billboard’s Hot RnB/ Hip Hop Songs chart. The Canadian megastar, as ever, focuses on curt lyricism and honesty, this time holding back from competitiveness against the world’s other hip hop behemoths, and rather focusing on his own world. If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late was a surprise release, dubbed as a mixtape rather than a commercial album, which gave Drake freedom to cast subtle digs at his record label (his relationship with which has involved complicated lawsuits and misunderstandings). He exhibits heightened awareness as an exposed celebrity, which is a hint at what we might expect in the upcoming Views from the 6.

Kevin Barnes, the weird and wonderful frontman of Of Montreal, returns with an unpredictable set of songs, in the style of ‘70s New York. As with the vast majority of Of Montreal material, the dynamics spring and dip, and harmonic progressions take unexpected turns over regular changes in time signature. In the style of the title, which essentially means ‘a beautiful ugliness’ (as the band puts it), the album crisscrosses a multiplex of lyrical matter, written by a recently divorced, self-searching Barnes. None of the songs seem quite as timeless as Of Montreal songs that have emerged in the past, but the subject matter is more striking. Highlights include the arresting lyrics of opening track ‘Bassem Sabry’ - “I believe in witches//I believe in you” - and the glam rock tones in ‘Monolithic Egress’.

West Coast duo Tuxedo have succeeded in a stylish album of unfailing disco tracks - an incredibly difficult stunt to pull off without sounding forced and trashy. Made up of Grammy nominated pair Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One, and produced by John Morales (who recently played at KEE Club), Tuxedo’s ’slap, clap, dance’ maxim works wonders. The lyrics are simple, in the style of classic boudoir tracks from the likes of Marvin Gaye. The indisputable highlight is ‘Do It’ - essentially a classier version Bruno Mars’ ‘Uptown Funk’. It’s simplistically about just wanting to dance, interspersed with organ-like synth leads and Bee Gees-esque falsetto vocal layering.

Tuxedo is a refreshing reminder that sometimes the best medicine is a straight out groove soundtrack.

Swedish-born singer songwriter José González has spent two years - since 2013 release Junip - refining and perfecting a collection of contemplative gems. Few will have forgotten his rendition of ‘Heartbeat’ by The Knife, where his flair for labyrinthine guitar patterns and soft tenor vocal tones brought him rapidly in the path of public attention in 2003. Vestiges and Claws is a tender and carefully sculpted record, each track investigating some deep and daunting idea in González’ whirlpool of a mind. The beauty - aside from the warmth emitted from crackling string and woodwind accompaniments - is in its absorbability, despite the large ideas González treads lyrically. González has yet to hit the peak of his potential, but we can await his next release eagerly, 'cos he’s nearly there.

Cuban by blood and bred in Paris, 20year old twin sisters Naomi and LisaKainde Diaz have pioneered a totally new sound. Their debut eponymous album as Ibeyi merges urban Paris with their Afro-Cuban roots, resulting in a new musical timbre altogether. In opening track ‘Oya’, Lisa-Kainde takes no time in asserting herself as one of the more striking vocalists of the past few years. Tribal percussion and vocal layering drive the album on through the next tracks. Vocoders and synthesisers add subtle moments to each song, but the enchantment lies more in the sparseness of the instrumentation. Thicker tracks like ’Stranger/Lover’ are few and far between - guided by sails of bassy strings, a deep cajón, and tender piano parts. It’s an album you fall deeply in love with in no time at all.

What’s your history with graphic design? I studied Art and Design at college. From there I studied Visual Communications, which gave me an understanding of the technical side of things. I went on to study Illustration and Design at university, and now I couldn’t finish a piece without combining illustrations with graphic design.

Future Pop. Pencil, Ink and Digital.

What and who have been your main influences? I like to keep in the loop with what other designers are up to online. I also collect magazines, leaflets and fliers and have done for years! This gives me ideas for designs, paper types and packaging ideas. Vintage and retro ideas and visuals inspire me too.

What was the artistic process behind the Belle & Sebastian cover? The process consisted of 3 pencil drawings, and merged into one in Photoshop. I then done some mark making with ink to create the love heart background pattern. Once I scanned it all in, I tidied up the drawings and created the repeated background.

Misha Hart. Pencil, Marker Pen and Watercolour

How do you choose your colours? The brief was to create an illustration in my own style. I wanted to pay homage to the Belle and Sebastian two toned album colours. The colours related to the cherry blossom symbolic of Valentine’s Day. What are your upcoming projects and how can we find them? I am currently in the very early stages of doing some fashion illustration work for a few Scottish designers, but I can’t say too much at this point. You’ll just have to follow me on Instagram (@veriettedesign) to stay up to date with what I get up to!

Bring Back Indie Dance

Apart from being a core member of Sync Sing Sin and 1/2 of HK electronica act Gravity Alterstra, ex Slow-Tech Riddim member Alok is also an active solo artist, releasing post rock and ambient records alike; he’s even picked up the task of producing. His productions span from ‘Unixx’ to ‘The Yours’ and most recently, HK indie favourites ‘Fantastic Day’. After the critically acclaimed debut album Innocent, Fantastic Day and Alok teamed up once more and took a step further. Unlike the C-86 sounding debut, they’ve made an indie-dance influenced album. Go check out their single ‘For Tomorrow’ on YouTube to smell that late 80’s groove! How did “Indie Dance” start? The ‘Madchester’ movement

happened in Manchester during the late 80s. Both acid-house and Hacienda’s UK rave culture, Stock, Aitken and Waterman’s pop tunes, C-86’s indie pop, even New Order’s album Technique were all stimulators for the scene and made it a global thing. It’s basically a combination of all of the above. Why did you guys decide to make an indie-dance inspired album in 2015? As the ‘Madchester’ movement heavily influences both Fantastic Day and me, we found ourselves discussing it a lot whilst working on their debut album, Innocent. Later on we realized that no one has ever done an indie-dance album in Hong Kong, so we gave it a try. Who are your favourite bands? I’ve got a lot of favourite bands,

but the best Indie Dance groups have to be The Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets, Northside, The Wendys, Paris Angels, My Jealous God, Flowered Up, Campag Velocet.

All Mod Cons and the Vinyl Eternity modmod.club

”Steve Jobs was a pioneer of digital music, but when he went home he listened to vinyl” - Neil Young

I was always intrigued with the Mod subculture and its related bands, from The Small Faces, The Who and The Kinks to British Mod revival lads, The Jam. I can’t recall how many versions of their classic album All Mod Cons I have on CD, but I recently bought the re-issue vinyl from HMV, and suddenly became entirely convinced that some albums - this one included were made to be played on vinyl. It’s just the way they’re meant to be listened to and appreciated. The Jam covered The Kinks’ ‘David Watts’ in All Mod Cons, with ambitions to reinvent the Mod attitude and redefine the sound that carried the subculture. The album

brought back the sound of 1966 with a new perspective, and the Mod scene was thereafter rebuilt under new directions in music and fashion. It’s an album you can play over and over, through all the tracks on its A-Side to the reflective vinyl crackle once its B-Side comes to a close. How could any Mod believers resist the natural acoustic, the analogue guitar distortion noise, and the affluent soothing drum sound when ‘To Be Someone’, ‘English Rose’ or ‘In The Crowd’ are spinning on a record player? Over the past few years vinyl has begun to resurface as the trendy way to listen to music, and rightly so. There’s something in the rawness of analog music that could not be experienced

in the digital world; that unrestrained sound can be totally lost when a track is crammed digitally onto an iPhone. I’m enthusiastic about digital gadgets and do enjoy the conveniences they bring. Though when I get home, like Steve Jobs, I listen to vinyl the most. Check out independent stores White Noise (Causeway Bay), and Zoo Records (Mong Kok) for vintage vinyl.s.

How to Look Younger eightyleftover.blogspot.hk

People have always seemed to underestimate my age. When I was 20, they thought I was just 16. Even now I am already 30-something but they still ask if I’m a fresh graduate. They ask me, “How do you stay so young?” I don’t really have a secret, but there are some tricks you can use to make yourself look younger: Face Shape - A baby face is not just about a feeling but can be evaluated by the ‘golden face ratio’ of the upper, middle and lower part of your face. To put it simply, people with shorter faces tend to look younger. I’m not saying it’s necessary to change your face shape with plastic surgery, but just changing your fringe can make a difference. Cutting your fringe into bangs is the simplest way - it immediately makes your face look shorter and you

appear 2 years younger. Make Up - To have a baby face or a young face, skin has to be smooth and even-toned. Therefore, using a nude make up look is the best choice. What you need are just three things: BB cream, eyebrow powder and a pinkish lipstick. Apply a thin layer of BB cream to your face, then use the eyebrow powder to slightly shape your eyebrows. Be careful though an overly clear outline can make your eyebrows look unnatural. Finally, use your fingertip to apply lipstick, and the natural look is complete. People tend to look younger with smaller lips, but if your lips are fuller (which is great!), you can try to use the ‘petal lips’ technique. This is when you spread the lipstick colour from the middle of your lips, and gradient it outwards so it gets lighter as you spread it out to the

eightyleftover

edge of your lips. It’s a subtle look, and works perfectly. Outfit - A unisex style of outfit will make you look energetic and young. Simply pairing a hoodie or jumper with boyfriend jeans is already a perfect getup. You can wear high heels if you want to look a little more feminine or sexy, otherwise just a pair of Converse is fine! Taking everything easy is the way to go! It’s as simple as that! You can knock off those years starting tomorrow!

Wine and Music By:Roy Khoo

A Portuguese Love Story roykhoo

What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘Portugal’? Port wine, Macau, Portuguese dishes, or Cristiano Ronaldo? Oh Portugal, such a special territory yet so forgotten by people. In fact, Portugal is not renowned only by its tasty red wine, it houses a unique and representative music, called Fado. Fado means “fate” in Portuguese. Performing together with beautiful Guitarra Portuguesa (Guitar), Bandolim, Cavaquinho (Fourstringed guitar), the joys and sorrows of life follows the music and will keep lingering on your mind. Easily found in the square, around the street corners, at the bar or restaurants, traditional Portuguese singers would carry the Saudade soul in performing Fado. Saudade can be understood as nostalgia or profound melancholic longing for something or someone. It isn’t all about dark times though - Fado also

has a very bright side. The perfect way to enjoy Fado is to keep your other sensations busy with a glass of Portuguese wine. Quita de Lemos winery can satisfy all your wishes. Its logo represents humanity, simplicity, visionary and sharing. Its winemaking philosophy is to listen to the nature, using organic way to grow, picking the most native grapes, stressing on the balance between being modern and traditional. Among all other different wine, Donna Santana is the one which best reflects the essence of the Portuguese Destiny song. It is a mixture of four grape varieties, containing 60% of Touriga Nacional, 20% of Tinta Roriz, 10% of Jaen and 10% of Alfrocheiro. These proportions resonate to most people’s life – having times as bitter as tannins; as delightful as the sweet smell of fruits; as regretful as the sourness of lemon; as angry and exciting as spices.

The wine colour is as beautiful as a singer’s ruby red outfit, together with the solid wine texture which exudes a charming red and black berry aroma. The acidity that deepens in your mouth is as if it is a song reaching directly to your heart. Prolonged sweetness, with jumps of tannins, with Fado’s rippling melody in your mind, it turns into different flavours. I hate to say it, but what is more perfect that matching music and wine?

For the Sheep, the year ahead might seem difficult, but not to worry: your hard work will pay off in the end. You will start to feel stressed in a few areas, which will lead you to reflect a bit more on what you really want in life.

Life seems to be heading off in a very good direction, but there’s a lot of hard work ahead. You’ll have big plans for the upcoming days, It’s like they say, “aim for the moon. If you miss, you may hit a star”. Dream big this month!

Monkeys might find themselves having trust issues or problems at work. It is a way to protect yourself, but sometimes it is also a good idea to trust more in others, because the results could be a big surprise for you!

A very good month for Pigs - its seems like there are neverending changes happening, but that’s just the nature of life. This is going to be one of those months that will give you a definite confirmation of good changes in life!
