BASS MUSIC CHINA 3RD ANNIVERSARY ft. OM UNIT

Electro Philosophy

4 APR

BASS MUSIC CHINA CELEBRATES ITS THIRD ANNIVERSAY WITH LEGENDARY ELECTRO PIONEER, OM UNIT

ehind the basement door at XXX on the 4th, one of the most steadfast names in electronic music takes over Bass Music China’s third anniversary party. Om Unit, from London, boasts a catalogue that spans every corner of underground music, from jungle and drum ’n’ bass to hip hop. Known otherwise as Jim Coles, the producer and turntablist can easily be compared to the likes of Aphex Twin in terms of stark originality and the timbre of his music; his tracks brandish the sort of wide-eyed restlessness you can only experience in a music festival dance tent at 4am. Although Coles had ventured through a multitude of different projects, including representing the UK at the DMC world DJ Championships as 2Tall in 2003 and releasing footwork-jungle under the name Phillip D. Kick years later, his sights eventually settled on the Om Unit moniker in 2012. In his words, “Om is the sound of creation, Unit is a singularity, a point of creation.” An Om Unit mix is known for being

B

intricately composed, borne of a mind that considers musicians to be ‘transceivers of information’. His latest album, 2014’s Inversion, dips into his old jungle sound in tracks like ‘War’, while exploring ethereal soundscapes in atmospheric studies like ‘Bardo Realms’. The album was released on Metalheadz, a leading bass label founded by 90s’ DnB forefather Goldie. Metalheadz has most recently collaborated with other pivotal artists Dillinja and Ed Rush, but Om Unit is the label’s gleaming centrepiece. In the style of a Hong Kong club party, there will be plenty of support from some of our best local DJs. Providing support on the night will be XXX founder DJ Enso, Kid Fresh, BMC residents Saiyan and DJ 108, DJ Subcoat, and MC Upbeat Cynic. Bass Music China has hosted some of the best underground parties we've seen in Hong Kong; thanks to three years of their existence, Hong Kong’s underbelly has never rumbled louder. This is going to be one hell of a birthday party: excellent music at the city's prime underground venue.

2 CHAINZ @ Club CUBIC

Definitely Different THE INIMITABLE KING OF BLING DROPS INTO CLUB CUBIC FOR ITS 4TH ANNIVERSARY

18 APR

lub Cubic has been an integral part of nightlife in Macau since it opened four years ago. So far, its stage has been graced with the presence of hundreds of the world’s biggest names, including Ludacris, Afrojack, Ne-Yo, Stafford Brothers, Lil Jon, Fatboy Slim, and even members of the Wu Tang Clan. This month, Cubic celebrates its 4th Anniversary by booking in possibly the biggest name in gangsta rap - the embodiment of bling, prosperity and all-round superstardom: 2 Chainz. 2 Chainz, born Tauheed Epps, rose to fame alongside Dolla Boy in Atlanta hip hop duo Playaz Circle, back when he went by the pseudonym Tity Boi. Signed to Ludacris’ inimitable label Disturbing tha Peace, Playaz Circle made waves with single ‘Duffle Bag Boy’, which made it into the Top 5 Hip Hop/R&B Singles charts in 2007. Breaking out into a solo career in 2007, 2 Chainz signed to Def Jam

C

Recordings in 2012 and released his first solo album Based on a T.R.U. Story. The Grammy-nominated album featured the likes of Nicky Minaj and Lil Wayne, and featured pivotal track ‘I’m Different’. 2013 was the catalytic year for the rapper’s success, with the release of B.O.A.T.S II: Me Time featuring collaborations with Pharrell Williams and Drake. 2 Chainz’ voice features on hundreds of rap tracks, new and old, including A$AP Rocky’s ‘F*ckin’ Problems’ and Major Lazer’s ‘Bubble Butt’. A private VIP event will take over until 1am, before the venue doors will open to lucky ticket holders. It’s the Club Cubic event you just can’t miss: 2 Chainz is well known for putting on a hell of a show, taking crowds through a journey of his hits from the Playaz Circle era to late releases. This is perhaps Club CUBIC's biggest show to date, and it may sell out, so make sure to get your tickets quickly!

KATY PERRY – PRISMATIC WORLD TOUR

MAY

Hear Her Roar

here are pop stars aplenty flying in from the west over the next few weeks. Some, like our cover star Charli XCX, are on their way up, but some are quite comfortably sat at the top of the pop chain. On the 1st and 2nd May, super shiny mega-diva Katy Perry brings her PRISMATIC WORLD TOUR to the Cotai Arena in The Venetian, Macau. The tour has enjoyed 129 dates around the UK, the US, and most recently Europe, with Charli XCX as support. Throughout May, she continues her journey around Asia. Believe it or not, Perry’s career started off in the gospel end of the industry - overlooked by pastor parents from California - from which she strayed quite aggressively with track ‘I Kissed A Girl’ in 2008 under Capitol Records. Since the shock factor of that first track shot her up into the spotlight, the doll-faced prima donna has produced three chart-topping albums, gathered more Twitter

T

followers than Justin Bieber (which has so far earned her three Guinness World Records), and received too many music and video awards to count on hands alone. Perry’s latest track ‘Dark Horse’, which was released in mid-February, has become one of the best-selling singles ever, garnering almost a billion YouTube views and 8 million hard copies globally. Perry’s failsafe hit-making has become a cultural phenomenon; a night out clubbing nowadays almost always features at least one of her songs, whether you like it or not. Though it’s hard not to like her, after experiencing her dazzling sense of humour in interviews and humility in regards to her media-infested private life. So, which inflatable stage companions will she bring with her to Asia? How will she enter the stage? Most importantly, what colour will her hair be? There’s only one way to find out. Get your tickets now.

OZONE 4TH ANNIVERSARY

Flying Colours erched on top of the Ritz Carlton, Ozone consistently provides the ultimate location for parties. Much to our appreciation, the trendy sky-bar has also been home to some of our city’s classiest and most forwardthinking music events, like the Sol Passion showcases, Cliché Records events and local DJ showcases. It’s held celebrity parties and has been the go-to bar when our friends visit from other countries. It’s the eye of Hong Kong, and it’s difficult to find anyone who doesn’t love it dearly. On May 9th, Ozone turns four, and to celebrate it’s hosting an anniversary party 'with flying colours'. Sort of a Hong Kong version of the house in Pixar’s Up, the bar is attaching

P

huge quantities of rainbow coloured balloons to its open air rooftop, flying you ‘sky high’ all night. The venue has been always been intent on promoting the crème de la crème of local DJ talent. Its resident DJs, picked carefully by Ozone over the past four years, will spin across two DJ booths all night. DJs include Mistrezz C, Hitomi, Rifain, Kenji, Tai Pan Dan, Ed Rollo, Mike Vera and Miles Slater. If that wasn’t a big enough lineup already, Ozone promises an array of entertainment to keep you on your feet, including interactive performers throughout the night. Dress brightly, try their delicious Dragontini, and get there early to secure some seats by the view. If you’re lucky, you’ll get an invite to the cocktail party from 8pm to 10pm.

CHARLI XCX

THE MODERN POP PRINCESS GLITZY AND OUTSPOKEN, CHARLI XCX TELLS US ABOUT HER PLANS FOR THE FUTURE OF POP, DEALING WITH THE SPOTLIGHT, AND HER NEW ALBUM SUCKER opstars often take a while to find their place in the commercial industry, but for Charli XCX, it couldn’t have happened more naturally. The 22-year-old songstress from Cambridge is the rising pop princess you might not yet recognise by name, but give it a few months and you won’t be able to avoid her. Born Charlotte Aitchison, Charli XCX is the forthright force behind Icona Pop track ‘I Love It’, and the brawny voice in the chorus of Iggy Azalea’s ‘Fancy’ - now one of the best-selling singles of all time. “So I’m just finishing up this tour with Katy Perry”, she tells

us across the line in Latvia. “She just kind of asked me if I wanted to go, and I said yes. I don’t get to play much in Europe so I thought it would be a really cool tour to be on.” Charli continues, with an air of cool nonchalance, “The crowds have been awesome, and the stages are huge. I feel very at home on them.” Charli began her career seriously at the age of 14, performing at illegal raves in London. “Even though most people only really began to hear of me last year, I’ve been doing this since I was very young. It feels like a very long journey for me, which has enabled me to stay pretty level-headed throughout the

原 名 C h a r l o t t e Aitchison的Charli XCX,是大熱歌曲〈I Love It〉的作曲人,該曲是她眾多作品 中極速成為各大DJ必打歌曲之一。

whole process.” With barely any time to breathe between constant touring and writing, Charli lets us in on how she deals with the sudden superstardom. “I’ve realised I’m not very sociable when I tour. But I have some really great best friends who I’m always in touch with, who keep me grounded. So I don’t feel like I’m an arsehole, most of the time…well, maybe sometimes, but I think that’s kind of allowed in this industry.” Since Charli’s second album, True Romance, was released in 2013, her approaches to writing pop music have already developed. Named after the 1993 Quentin Tarantino film, True Romance covered her romantic past;

her latest album, Sucker (2014), hails from a very different place. “Sucker is very honest. It came from a place of aggression. I wanted to make some aggressive pop music- like, bitchy pop music - to show that girls can also get angry too, you know? And basically I wrote about everything from relationships and masturbating to money and the music industry.” Though Charli claims her relationship with the industry is far from hostile. “When I was younger, I felt like I really had to fight for everything that I believed in. I had to prove that my ideas were better than someone else’s, you know? I think that was partially because I’m

自 C h a r l i

They really trust me and they let me do my thing, which is quite rare for major record labels.” It looks like Charli XCX will always be the one to call the shots. Disclosing her grand plans for the future of pop, she says, “I want to have an empire. I want to have my own record label and my own publishing company which I’m already working on now. I already manage artists. The music industry now lends so well to the artists having control rather than the record labels, which is really cool.” On the artists she hopes to cultivate, Charli continues, “I’d just like to create artists that were more flamboyant. I feel like a lot of people are so media trained and scared of what the right and wrong thing to say is these days. The whole idea of like, the crazy rock and roll side of the music industry is kind of gone. I think it would be amazing to create a star who was all of those things again.” Drawing inspiration largely from photographers and films, Charli lets us in on her plans for Sucker live shows. “It’s gonna be beautiful. I just got this huge inflatable lollipop, and I have these amplifiers that light up. It kind of looks like a Japanese game show.” Citing photographer David LaChapelle as one of her key visual influences, Charli also recalls the opening sequence of musical film Grease (1978). “When the credits roll at the beginning, there’s that awesome cartoon sequence where the Pink Ladies and T-Birds are getting ready for school. I kind of want my stage show to feel like a bit like those opening credits.” Charli’s chart-topping track ‘Boom Clap’ was selected to appear on the soundtrack to Josh Boone’s The Fault in Our Stars (2014), tapping into her long-brewed desire to write for film. “I didn’t actually write it for the movie though. I’ve always wanted to write a song specifically for a movie, but with ‘Boom Clap’ they just heard it and liked it, and felt it was right for the movie.” But an opportunity to write specifically for the screen

Next our pulse is lowered and thoughts provoked in a sensitive approach to the flash fire in Apollo 1’s cockpit, which killed three much loved US astronauts in early 1967. JWE explains, “I wanted to make that song as unemotional as possible, because I didn’t think it was our job to emote all over it, or attempt to make it really sentimental and overdone. It’s the one song where the feeling of euphoria we tried to put across in the rest of the album is put on pause. It’s meant to be a really restrained song to simply get across the tragedy of what happened.” In track ‘E.V.A.’, panicked minor guitar riffs play against cinematic strings in a tense build up, to the moment at which Alexei Leonov, the first spacewalker, reports back to earth as he steps out of his capsule and floats above silken piano triads. ‘The Other Side’, focused on the Mission Control in Houston as Apollo 8 loses contact travelling around the moon, culminates in an explosive climax as contact is regained, and Houston breathes an elated sigh of relief. “For me that’s the most emotional moment on the album,” says JWE. A tribute then unfolds to the first female and citizen cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova, in ethereal vocal layering by female group Smoke Fairies, splashed with starry syllables and breathy climbs. And of course, ‘Go!’, the energetic and addictive penultimate track, once more focused on Mission Control in Houston, documents the first moon landing by Apollo 11 in 1969. “One thing I’ve learned, and it’s been slightly written out of our version of history - because the version is that America won the Space Race - is that actually they really only won the race to the moon. They lost everything before that; it was the Russians who were achieving all the big firsts.” The events of the Space Race are barely even scratched in the album, but the spectrum of emotions associated with the era are beautifully embodied: terror and delirium; grief and conquest. “One of the things I

They’re sitting on top of several million tons of rocket fuel, which is being burned at 20 tonnes a second, and some of these guys are sat there with their heart rates staying at 70 beats per minute. You’re being launched into space. There’s absolutely nothing out there. A million things could go wrong, at least. These people were essentially a different breed.” Although Public Service Broadcasting had no personal contact with NASA during the making of The Race for Space for the sake of full independence with the record, JWE mentions proudly, “To

date, we’ve had nothing but good feedback, even from a couple of the guys who were in the room at the time of the moon landing. I mean, Gene Kranz I know has actually been sent the video and apparently he’s given it the thumbs up, which to us is absolutely incredible.” Track ‘Tomorrow’ brings the record to a close, fading further and further away, allusive to the yet unexplored. Which poses the question: what will be the next Public Service Broadcasting topic? JWE refuses to disclose, but hints: “It will be on a bit more of a human level - and again, moving forward in history. It’s nice to keep the timeline moving towards the present.”

ΔLΞC MONOPOLY

SUCCESSFUL STREET ARTISTS HAVEN’T ALWAYS HAD IT EASY. ALEC MONOPOLY LETS US IN ON HIS COLOURFUL PAST AND PRESENT agging a building in New York City, Alec Monopoly jumps off at the sight of the police. “So I’m acting like I’m not doing anything wrong, and acting like I’m on the phone. I throw the spray can, and they’re just creeping on me, and I turn down a one-way street. And he follows me, and I run, but there’s another cop on the other side of the street, so I’m like, ah fuck.” In the style of a Hollywood movie protagonist, Alec Monopoly’s life has been eventful, to say the least. The eminent street artist, born Alec Andon, has fought through wind and fire to get to where he is now. Alec Monopoly is most recognised for his paintings of the Monopoly Man. “I never actually gave myself the name Alec Monopoly,” he is quick to point out. “People would just read the tag ‘Alec’ and see the Monopoly guy, and I suppose I was kind of branded by, I guess, the public.” Alec started painting the Monopoly Man in response to the financial crisis in 2008. “The character was inspired by Bernie Madoff, who was the reason the crisis even began. I was playing Monopoly and saw him on the news being arrested, then realised he kind of looked like the

Monopoly guy. I thought it would be funny to do some graffiti of him, so that night I went out and just tagged some quick sloppy Monopoly guys around the streets.” In just a few weeks Alec’s tags had grabbed the attention of magazines and art blogs. Seven years later, he’s one of the top 10 most searched artists online, alongside Banksy and Andy Warhol. Achieving substantial success through his street art, Alec crossed the barrier into the contemporary art world by sticking to his brand - “I was really inspired by the way Damien Hirst marketed himself and kept his brand so strong,” he reveals. He claims avoiding unnecessary shock factor also boosted his career. “I was doing some crazy stuff when I started out, but then met my biggest fan at my art show in LA. He was a ten year old kid called Alec, and he bought two paintings, and I realised I had such a big fan base of kids that I kind of had a responsibility to keep my artwork PG-13.” Back in his ‘crazy’ days, Alec fled New York City and headed to LA after police raided his studio in 2006. “I had been tagging all over NYC, then they raided the studio and I had to sneak out through a garbage chute. I crept

Alec continues, “you’ve seen pictures of the subways back then; you couldn’t even see the windows because there was so much graffiti.” Between 1985 and 1989, the city’s authorities embarked on a ‘war on graffiti’, and ever since, street art in NYC has been highly illegal. “It’s like Homeland security; it’s basically considered a terrorist act if you get caught in the subway system. It’s super sketch; I don’t fuck with it.” Since moving to LA, Alec claims to have found it much easier to find space to paint. “LA is kind of a dangerous place. They have so many bigger problems than catching street artists - gangs, shootings, stuff like that.” The world of street art itself can be dangerous too, claims Alec. Street artists battle each other by painting over each other’s works, and sometimes it can end badly. “It’s a big thing, like in New York when Banksy would do a piece, another graffiti artist

ALEC HAS SECURED HIS FIRST MUSEUM SHOW AT THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART IN THAILAND will come tag over it because they want to steal his shine. I’m super anal about people going over my pieces, like, if you go over my piece once, I go over all of your pieces in the city. It’s crazy though; it gets dangerous. Like people get hurt.” He smiles, “I’m really fast though; no one will catch me.” Revealing a little more about the street art underworld, Alec says, “We actually communicate with each other, too. When I’m walking through the streets, I see them differently than anybody else. I see a little tag right there, right here, and recognise the artist and what they’re saying.” Now turning his focus on Asia - largely inspired by New York artist Kaws, who took a similar turn Alec has secured his first museum show at the newly built Museum of Contemporary Art in Thailand, and has a solo exhibition at Above Second Gallery in Sai Ying Pun. The exhibition, entitled ‘Capital Games’, features a range of artworks made specifically for Hong Kong. “They actually made a Hong Kong Monopoly but I switched around some of the streets and made them more relevant,” Alec says.

The works feature his unmistakable characters under signs for Hong Kong’s symbolic locations, and two of the pieces are specially sculptured on wooden frames - a form different to any of Alec’s previous work . Aside from the Monopoly Man, Alec paints Scrooge McDuck, “the grumpy old rich man who’s super cheap and squanders his money. Then we have Richie Rich, the richest kid in the world, and I call him ‘the poor little rich boy’ because he doesn’t have any friends and people are always trying to steal from him and stuff.” Although these characters were once satirical references to the economy, Alec claims they are now just symbols of wealth and prosperity. He notes the appeal of this to financially vibrant Hong Kong: “This work is very relatable to the guys in big businesses here. They see money symbols all over the paintings and find it almost a good luck charm.” Laying down candid advice for the aspiring street artist, Alec says: “You gotta pay your dues, and you gotta do a hell of a lot of graffiti. You gotta go all-city, which I did. You’re

basically getting your name out in every part of the city, and have graffiti tags everywhere. You’ve just gotta work really hard, because it doesn’t come easy. There’s also a lot of trouble you can get into, so you’ve gotta be prepared to go to jail.” Catch Alec’s exhibition at Above Second until April 18th.

Alec

lmost a year since its opening, Ho Lee Fook is a restaurant we’ve all heard about. It’s Chinese food with a twist, but the twist lies not so much in the food itself. Rather, it’s in the design, and also in the approach head chef Jowett Yu took in opening the restaurant. In his words, “based on the fact that the rent is just ridiculous”, there is nowhere in the world where opening a restaurant is as difficult as in Hong Kong. “It’s harder running a restaurant in Hong Kong,” Jowett says, “also because the resources are hard to come by. Nothing grows in Hong Kong, so we have to organise daily shipments. It’s also hard to give value to customers at the same time as making profit and sustaining the business.” Jowett has so far overcome this issue by attacking a niche; Ho Lee Fook pairs traditional Chinese dishes with a relaxed urban style. “I always wanted it to be like a normal restaurant, that you can use to sit down for a quick meal, or sit for hours over a friend’s birthday meal.” Descending the stairs beside the Maneki Neko-lined wall, the first thing you notice about the interior of Ho Lee Fook is the wacky artwork, made by Jonathan Jay Lee - the local artist and illustrator famed for creating Marvel characters. “I just wanted it to be a good Chinese restaurant that didn’t look like one, if you know what I mean,” Jowett tells us. “A lot of Chinese restaurants

A

are pretty homogenous - they’re lit super brightly and covered in gold and red and they don’t look great.” Alongside the artwork, Jowett’s own playlists fill the speaker system - A Tribe Called Quest’s back catalogue, when we dropped in for a bite. Jowett came to Hong Kong directly from Sydney, where he had been head chef at two restaurants one was a freestyle Asian eatery and one a Cantonese diner. “I used to cook French food, but realised one day that I just wanted to make Asian food, because the flavour profile is encompassing in all balance. With every bit of salt you also add sugar for balance. There’s acidity, there are textures, there’s heat; it’s all I want to eat and all I want to make.” On the task of becoming head chef of a restaurant, Jowett advises aspiring chefs: “What people don’t realise is that once you become head chef, no one is going to teach you anything anymore, so it’s all really up to you. You have a responsibility, not just to run shop but to teach other people.” He continues, “no one’s really qualified for the next job they go for, really. So you just go for it. There’s a lot of trial and error, learning from things you’ve done, and how to deal with different situations better. But it’s all a learning process.” Jowett recommends the dumplings appetiser to new Ho Lee Fook customers. “Everyone loves a good dumpling,” he smiles.

A Fresh Kick to Lan Kwai Fong

hen people are drinking, singing and dancing just outside the bars in Lan Kwai Fong, they probably don’t notice that they’re standing underneath one of Hong Kong’s most unique venues. More than a just a drinking hole, Orange Peel is a shiny new home to a wide range of art and music. Stepping out of the elevator, the door allows you a sneak peek at the venue. The first thing that pops into your eyes is the colourful surrealist wall paintings, which is the director Joyce Peng’s favourite art style. Right next to the stage for live performance, there is a grand piano, giving me the impression of a classy jazz bar. But João Marcos Mascarenhas, one of the partners and also a musician in Orange Peel, tells me I’m wrong.

You might think that live music is all they have here, but in fact they make sure to put on events that make Orange Peel stand out from the crowd. “Like last week, we had an amazing Mexican piano player play for few hours here. And before his concert, we had the belly dance performance. So it was like, wow, a Mexican jazz piano player and the belly dancer. They are not together, they are different. But in the end this is what this place is about: embracing culture.”

60’s Surf Rock WHY ARE QUENTIN TARANTINO AND THE BLACK EYED PEAS SUCH HUGE FANS? hen we say Surf Rock we’re not talking about the mellow sounds of The Beach Boys, but instead, wailing electric guitars, fierce drum solos, and ecstatic shouts that match the adrenaline rush of catching a wave. In the early 1960s, upbeat instrumental surf rock set off a musical craze that reached the far corners of the globe. Born on the beaches of Southern California, the music captivated audiences in far away places not traditionally known as surfing hotspots, such as Minnesota, Amsterdam, and even communist East Germany. Surf rock music is a sub-genre of rock ‘n’ roll, made with electric guitars, electric bass, and electric piano or organ. Sometimes a saxophone is added to the mix as well. The music originated in the late 1950s and reached its peak in the early 60s. The genre is identifiable by its use of guitars, which have a distinct ‘twang’ sound made from the use of reverb and staccato picking. The drums feature blazing beats that set the stage for a fast-paced ride.

Some of the leading groups that pioneered surf rock include Dick Dale & The Deltones, The Trashmen, The Chantays, The Sentinals, The Ventures, The Bel-Airs, The Atlantics, The Astronauts, The Gamblers, The Surfaris, The Challengers, The Centurions, and The Pyramids. Surf rock songs were often named after famous surf spots or derived from surfer slang. For example, The Chantay’s hit ‘Pipeline’ was named after the infamous North Shore surf spot Banzai Pipeline, which is one of the most dangerous places to surf in the world. The huge 1963 hit ‘Wipeout’ by The Surfaris sold over a million copies when it was released, and popularized a slang term that people use to describe when someone falls. The energy, moodiness, and coolness associated with surf rock continues to win the genre new fans every year. These same traits have also attracted the attention of filmmakers. In 1962, surf rock appeared on the soundtrack for the classic James Bond film, Dr. No. In 1994, Quentin Tarantino utilized surf rock in his

landmark film Pulp Fiction. In one of the most memorable scenes, John Travolta and Uma Thurman dance to Dick Dale & The Del-tones’ ‘Misirlou’. Over the years, multiple hit songs have been built on top of surf rock sounds. Even mega-pop groups like The Black Eyed Peas have got in on the action, seeking to tap the energy of surf rock. In their 2005 hit ‘Pump It’, The Black Eyed Peas heavily sampled ‘Misirlou’. Perhaps the most well known surf rock song of modern times, ‘Misirlou’ is a standout in part due to its use of ethnic sounds. Originally a Greek composition meant to sound Middle Eastern, it is most widely known from Dick Dale’s version from 1962, but has been sampled and re-recorded hundreds of times.

Some of the most interesting surf rock songs take a similar path, combining instrumental rock with Middle Eastern, Mexican, or Hawaiian influences. The Sentinals’ ‘Latin’ia’ is another good example of this successful blending of cultures. Compared to other genres, surf rock never seems to go out of style. From its heyday in the early 60s, surf rock has experienced revivals every decade. In the 1970s, The B-52’s had a hit with the surf rock influenced ‘Rock Lobster’. In the 80s and 90s new bands sprang up that kept the genre alive including Man or Astro-man?, Los Straitjackets, and The Mermen. Even as recently as 2010, The Drums had a hit with their single, ‘Let’s Go Surfing’. Contemporary bands that carry on the surf rock tradition

On the Streets “I don’t tend to wear a lot of colour – black is basically my best friend – and in general I would probably describe my look as minimalist and fairly androgynous. Comfort is important, both in terms of how my clothes feel and how they make me feel. This particular outfit had to work for a day in the office and an evening of events, most of which were outside, hence the oversized jacket. That being said, I do enjoy playing with proportions and silhouettes.”

TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY

FREEDOM HIGHWAY COMPLETE: RECORDED LIVE AT CHICAGO’S NEW NAZARETH CHURCH

Aftermath

Along comes an album that renders everything else irrelevant; Aphex Twin’s Syro made a similar impact recently (though in many ways it was more a relief that he was back after such a long hiatus), while D’Angelo’s Black Messiah had much to say content-wise, not to mention being a major musical accomplishment. But it’s Kendrick Lamar’s fourth LP that scores higher. As a document of social ills, particularly in the wake of the recent fatal shootings of black Americans by an overwhelmingly white police force, as well as being a personal and artistic exorcism of a million fallen brothers and sisters, it’s a record of force and sincerity. As a musical document it lacks flow, despite the commendable collaborations, but this matters little when the material is this powerful.

WILD STRAWBERRIES

GOON

Thrill Jockey

It would be easy to dismiss Eternal Tapestry: Their sound can be loosely described as psychedelic rock of a bygone age, and their latest LP was recorded in near isolation in a cabin in the shadow of Mount Hood, a twenty-mile drive from Portland, Oregon. And because we live in an age in which we all lazily dismiss people based on their ‘external tapestries’, then they could easily be deemed hipsters, and ignored. That would be foolish. While their style of music may not be for everyone, once you’ve surrendered to its rich sonic complexities and multi-layered mysteries then there’s nothing left to do but transcend and drift off. As pretentious as that may sound, it’s the plain truth. This is a gorgeously rich album recorded away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, with

the band giving in, letting go, and allowing the music to take control.

THE SLEEPING TAPES

Kompakt

Having operated in the game now for nearly two decades and still going strong, Signs Under Test is something like the American producer’s tenth studio album. And while his overall output hasn’t been closely scrutinised by as many people as it should have over that period, Parabolas, which came out in 2011, also on the esteemed label Kompakt, was well received. (Anyone who has listened to the opening two tracks at least will attest to that). His latest album may not be his strongest or most musically arresting, but it still has a strength and personality of its own. And while it’s hard to pin this record down in terms of its subgenre, his minimal, almost timeless, approach to house and techno’s key principles makes it a stirring listen. A profound understanding of music

lies subtly beneath his minimalism, perhaps down to an upbringing by classically trained parents - his father was an orchestra composer and conductor, while his mother sung in revered choirs as a soprano singer. To be ingested mindfully; definitely one for the night owls.

What’s not to admire about one of the world’s most loveable acting talents just walking and talking? Beneath the dreamlike, or perhaps nightmarish album art (the multiple eyes open and shut with the CD sleeve), Bridges has curated an audio companion to sleep. With that gruff, warm timbre to his voice, (with which he spans spoken word and improvised humming throughout the album) and The Dude’s lackadaisical approach to life, Bridges brings his own sensibilities as well as some of the famous roles he's played to a record that does so much more than enable a good night’s rest. This is a meditative meander through deserts and canyons, which at times is spiritual and philosophical and at others rather whimsical and tongue in cheek. writing the score and Bridges' vocal play, this is a record unlike any other. The album is available to buy on dreamingwithjeff.com, where your donations (however much you want to pay) go to charity. REVIEW:

BANG & OLUFSEN H8 HEADPHONES

L

oaded with special features and stylish details, the H8 headphones are remarkable but pricey.

Featuring a unique gesture control system, you’ll feel like 007 as you utilize finger movements on the right ear cup to answer calls, skip through songs, and control the volume. Built out of lambskin, stitched leather, memory foam, and anodized aluminum, the headphones achieve a successful balance of being lightweight and sturdy at the same time. B&O are renowned for their audio performance and the H8 doesn’t disappoint. During our tests, the headphones provided stunning clarity even in a crowded room. The softness of the ear cups offer such a comfortable fit that you’ll forget you have them on. Pros + As a company that's been involved with audio for nearly 100 years, the headphones will likely outmatch any recent headphone brand. + You are unlikely to find a more comfortable pair of headphones. Cons - At its price, it would be nice if it came in more than two colours. - Wireless is convenient, but not necessary for everyone. For DJs and others that require intensive use, the H6 (non-wireless) model might end up being a more dependable option.

Conclusion The H8 deliver a powerful bouquet of features that achieve comfort, convenience, elegance, and spectacular sound. Although expensive, the headphones may provide you with years of listening pleasure and a classic look that will never go out of style.

瞭解,都大大勝於其他新晉耳機品牌;

- 若能有兩種以上的顏色選擇,會較容易切合更多人的口味;

What inspired the use of polygons in your designs? I wanted to do something different for my brother’s Xmas present, something unique that I knew he couldn’t go and buy. And it just blossomed from there really, I get into a zone when I’m doing the polygons and find it quite relaxing, sort of like an uphill climb. What have been your main influences? Have you been influenced much by music or movies? I’m a big music, movie and console games fan so I take a lot of influences from those, basing my portraits on favourite characters from film and music. From the ‘Go with the Flow’ music video for Queens of the Stone Age to any film by Wes Anderson, I’m influenced by anything with a strong visual identity really.

What’s the most difficult part of the artistic process? How long does it take you to make one portrait? I think it’s just the time and attention to detail. Most of my portraits take around 4-12 hours as I try to get in as much character as I can to a subject. I tend not to blink very much when I get into the zone of making my prints. It seems like you’ve garnered a lot of attention online - what are your next big plans or projects? I’ve just finished a piece for Ed Sheeran which he’ll be using for his forthcoming tour, which is pretty exciting. I’ll be branching out into T-shirt designs in summer, and hopefully will get to do more BOOM covers, of course!

Are there any other graphic designers who have influenced you? Olly Moss is amazing, I’d fill my house with his reimagining of movie posters if I could.. And David Shrigley’s sense of humour in his work never fails to make me laugh. Have you always been interested in portraiture? What made you decide to try it? I’ve been a graphic designer for over 15 years now, but had never really tried the portrait thing until November last year. I just wanted to do something with less constraints than I have in my graphic design, which at the moment is quite a corporate day job.

KORG KAOSS DJ syncsingsin

Finally, Korg has put itself into the DJ market again (still remember those DJ mixers and video mixers with KAOSS technology?), although the KP3 and Kaossilator have already been on the booth for quite some time (Diplo being a big fan). This time it’s going a step further, bringing in the all in one, fun to use Kaoss DJ Serato/intro controller to the market. This is a Serato controller with a KAOSS pad tucked in, so you can’t record the KAOSS part into Serato DJ/intro, but you can use the XY pad to control the internal effects. It also works as a stand alone mixer, so as long as you have a phone charger, this baby is good to go. The touchpads can be used to set loop length/pitchbend and also

as a scratch platter. Unless you’re really skillful you won’t want to scratch on controller platters (well, I’ve seen people doing a really nice job on an S4 before but….), so I personally think keeping the round shape for track cueing / searching might actually be more user friendly. Suddenly limiting everything on a touch stripe might be difficult to get used to. Although the product is targeted towards amateurs, I still found it a very nice gadget to have, especially for set preparation or trying out ideas (it’s also perfect for small cozy home parties). Sneak one into your backpack, and you should be discovering a lot of new pop-up DJing venues in no time. (I keep mine on the table btw.) (Special thanks to :TOM LEE MUSIC).

“Quadrophenia tells a universal story. ‘Mod’ is a shorter word for ‘young, beautiful and stupid’. We’ve all been there.” - Pete Townshend, The Who.

It was all due to my obsession in the mod scene and the major influence by this iconic film, Quadrophenia, that I came up with the name modmod.club for my lifestyle online store.

Quadrophenia was Franc Roddam’s 1979 film version of the Who’s 1973 classic rock opera concept album, which brought the alienation of 1960s British workingclass youth to the big screen. It captures all the iconic images of ‘60s mod style, the parka coat serving to protect tailor made suits, the customised scooters kitted out with mirrors, the bars and coffee houses

and infamous clubs such as The 一切從我對Mod次文化的迷戀 Scene, The Marquee and King Mojo. The historical Mods and Rockers 《Quadrophenia》的重大影響下,一直在 riot scene in the movie was a classic 我生命藏下伏線令我想出以「modmod. where Jimmy (Phil Daniels) and club」來命名我的Lifestyle網上商店。 his gang head off to Brighton for 《Quadrophenia》是《Tho Who》 the weekend. Give Me a Doraemon Pocket eightyleftover.blogspot.hk

Whenever I go dancing in LKF, I always wish I had a Doraemon pocket, so that I could carry around all my cosmetics, mobile phone, wallet and iPod in it. But, in reality, I can only bring a clutch as a replacement, which is why I make sure I only bring these essential items out with me: 1) Concealing pen A concealing pen can fix the problem of make up melting, and corrects any blemishes on your face. Eyeliners and mascara always melt and darken the eye bags after dancing the night away, but you can simply use the concealing pen to cover the area that’s been darkened, rub it in gently with your fingers and you’ll immediately look as if you only just arrived.

2) Lip gloss Wearing a short, chic outfit and holding a glass of freezing champagne always makes my lips look deadly pale. I find a tube of red lip gloss rejuvenates my makeup. No matter how drunk and how tired you are, you can still look gorgeous with sexy red lips. 3) Small perfume bottle Fragrances always claim to give sex appeal. Wearing your own signature perfume makes you feel more unique and can help you feel sexier. I highly recommend that girls buy a Travalo Rapid Pump Fill Perfume Atomizer Bottle – it’s small and easy to carry around. It refills perfume in a second without any spillage. Just spritz yourself with it when you feel like you need to freshen up!

eightyleftover

There’s no need to use an expensive bag, like an Alexander McQueen clutch –in fact, I prefer to use an Anteprima Wirebag, because the elasticity of its wire is amazing. You can even squeeze an iPhone 6+ into it, which is wonderful!

Flamenco Flavours roykhoo

Cante (Singing), Baile (Dance) and Toque (Guitar Playing) are three main elements of modern flamenco. Brimming with passion and full of charm, flamenco is an integrated multi-ethnic culture, an art that is merged by the exchange of music and impassioned dance. In the early stages of flamenco, it was mainly found in the area of Andalucia in Southern Spain where nations like Gitanos (Gypsies) improvised it to express their feelings for family and friends. Most of the themes were about sadness and the sorrow of separation. The first remarkable Golden Age dated back to 1860 when Silverio Franconetti returned to the country from South America and opened the first café in Sevilla - namely, Café Cantante, which mainly performed Cante and Baile. Before long, Café Cantate could be found all over Andalucia and had even extended to cities like Madrid and Barcelona.

Until the 50s and 60s, flamenco merged various kinds of music progressively. New elements like innovative rhythmic guitar accompaniment were added. They were expressed in affectionate, charming aria and swift, skillful guitar performances. The dancing was delicate and changeable, with a soft, powerful strength, over lively rhythms both firm and flexible. The chemistry between the dancers, singers and guitarists presented the feelings of sadness, happiness, pride, arrogance, detachment, passion, humor and fury. As a result, flamenco became popular in new domains, like musicals. The Domaines Lupier Winery in Navarra shares some characteristics with flamenco. Couple Enrique Barsarte and Elisa are its owners and winemakers. They regard winemaking not only as a kind of business, but also as a kind of art. They always take painstaking and passionate care of their brainchild, the vineyard.

Garnacha grapes have been planted in the vineyard for over 100 years, having evolved through and overcome struggles with rain and storms - just like the long history of Flamenco. The young Garnacha grapes are without profundity, but the matured Garnacha are rich and fine, complicated and long-lasting. Elisa uses French oak barrels, making a more exquisite wine body. Oak barrels are like adding innovative dance and guitar accompaniment into classical flamenco to make it more synchronised and perfect as a whole. The winery’s La Dama wine is the ultimate expression of creation, resembling a passionate flamenco dancer with delicate and malleable aroma in a rapid rhythm. Tannins are syrupy and enchanting, just like the sound of gently tapping the wild castanets. The EI Terroir wine recalls a solo guitarist, playing complex rhythms naturally and smoothly. Its fruit aromas diffuse as if guitar sounds are dancing into your heart.

This month is very random for the piggies. You’ll find yourself in an unstable financial situation - sometimes you will be broke, and sometimes you have a lot. You’ll find yourself enjoying lots of different types of good food though!
