The Team

Welcome to May, mes chéris. Le French May has come around again, so, naturally, this month is absolutely rammed with things to do - check out our calendar for the month (P4) in which we’ve covered the best gigs, art shows, club nights and even film releases. On our cover we have French-Vietnamese hip hop instrumentalist Onra, who tells us his story in A-Side (P16), and Melbourne cool kid Courtney Barnett chats to us about her phenomenal new album in B-Side (P20). Oliver Clasper gets up close and personal with house music legend Marshall Jefferson before his set at Club 18 in On The Decks (P32), and our second Aussie act of the issue is up and coming soul act Hiatus Kaiyote (P34). As always, check out our music recommendations in Mixer (P50). French urban artist Invader takes over Hong Kong for the fourth time in Flipside (P24), and we ditch our summer diets in Boom’s Kitchen (P28) with a hearty battle between three of HK’s most popular steakfrites restaurants. Looking for somewhere different to get away? Peruse our guide to the best spots in Yogyakarta for a scenic break (P44), and get your monthly Zodiac fix from Thierry Chow (P62). Our Hidden Tracks section journeys through beauty, drink and music; be sure to check out Sync Sing Sin’s interview with Rinse FM producer Scratcha DVA in Notes from the Underground (P58). Affordable Art Fair @ HKCEC

ong Kong has a lot of major art exhibitions and auctions, which is all very good and well for multi-billionaires who need to splash out on a Picasso for the wall next to their gold grand piano. For the rest of us, it’s just a bit frustrating. Which is why we’re so pleased that every now and then an event like the Affordable Art Fair comes along, offering us the opportunity to decorate our flats with something a little more aesthetically stimulating than the latest IKEA collection - without draining our bank accounts. The Affordable Art Fair stems from an art enthusiast named Will Ramsay, who began setting up affordable art events in London about twenty years ago. It has since enjoyed successful events around the world, and this month returns to Hong Kong for the third year running. All works that will be displayed at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai are original, whether sculptures, paintings or prints, and prices can get as low as HKD$1000 (there's actually even a special 'Under $10,000' wall). The fair will feature food and drinks, plus activities and talks throughout.

H

fficially the largest indoor dance music event in Hong Kong, the White Party returns with a vengeance for its 10th Anniversary. This year it takes place at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, where the view of the skyline is one of the best in the city. The minds behind the White Party are redecorating the terminal into the ultimate multi-room party venue, with a revamped VIP section for those who like to indulge in luxury. It’s a bit pricey, but there’s something quite exciting about waves of dancing figures in white - almost like an official hello to summer. The White Party always prides itself on its lineups, this year bringing in UK house DJ, Spencer Tarring, and Ukrainian trance/progressive house producer Omnia. Road To Ultra Macau @ Club Cubic Ultra Music Festival繼續在亞洲展翅

Ultra Music Festival

Ultra

ltra Music Festival has spread its wings further than ever before. The organisers recently announced new event locations across Asia: Bali, and our glitzy neighbour Macau. On the 13th June, Ultra Musical Festival is bringing its original Miami heat to the treasured stage of Club Cubic. The event is part of Ultra Worldwide’s project Road to Ultra, in which venues in multiple countries have been equipped with cutting edge Ultra stage design, production, pyrotechnics and effects in order to replicate an Ultra Music Festival experience. As for the lineup at Road to Ultra Macau, EDM lovers certainly have nothing to complain about. Headlining the event are four of the top names in today’s dance music circuit: 2ManyDJs, Nicky Romero,

U

Porter Robinson, and DVBBS. In case you didn’t know, 2ManyDJs is a guise used by the brothers behind the integral electro band Soulwax. Mixing absolutely any genre together - as long as it makes the crowd dance their sets as 2ManyDJs are among the most visual and energetic experiences any dance fanatic can encounter. DVBBS are best known for their work with Borgeous on sparse club banger ‘Tsunami’, but their back catalogue since they sprang onto the scene in 2012 is not to be brushed aside. Taking to the stage at Ultra Music Festival and Electric Daisy Carnival last year, their unmistakable production is known and loved for rattling crowds of thousands. Porter Robinson’s live show is one of the reasons why he’s respected so much as a musician, rather than

just a DJ. Producing music since he was just 12 years old, the North Carolina beatmaker balances selfcreated big-room soundscapes with transcendent sampling and dubstep synth leads. In 2011 acts like Skrillex and Tiësto swept up his original sound as direct support on their tours, before Robinson decided to take off on his own headline tours around the world. Last but not least, Nicky Romero, the Dutch DJ and producer found aside David Guetta in Ibiza, Avicii in the charts, and Rihanna in the studio. Mostly recognised for his work with Avicii on UK #1 'I Could Be The One', Romero is also known for live innovation. At his gig at TomorrowWorld 2013 he used Google Glass to project his view of the crowd onto the big screen. Who knows what he'll pull from his sleeve in Macau.

Electric Daisy

Carnival,

Nicky

Romero。

Romero

Onra’s sampling is very often compared to that of legendary producer and rapper J Dilla, who tended to sample vintage records to create hip hop beat tapes – though Onra denies that he can name any one influence, let alone Dilla. While it’s tempting to assume ties between Onra’s Vietnamese heritage and Chinoiseries, he brushes it off. “Anyone would have done the same thing. revolved more around a funk linchpin, garnering Onra a wave of critical acclaim for his promise as an eclectic and knowledgeable producer), Onra released a follow up album: Chinoiseries Pt. 2 (2011). The album ran headfirst into a slightly darker sonic battle, using more Chinese records he had collected - this time with some from the Philippines, Thailand and Hong Kong. Where Chinoiseries carried forward a sunny and stirring mishmash of East-meetsWest, Chinoiseries Pt. 2 was criticised by many, including Onra himself, as an end to the novelty. After its release, Onra left the Far East behind in his music and tested his boundaries as a late-night funk, RnB and, ultimately, hip hop samplist. On the upcoming album Fundamentals, Onra traces his youth. “The title speaks for itself; I’m going back to my fundamentals.” He recalls the music he was raised on: “When I grew up, hip hop and RnB were the only genres I knew. In his opinion, it’s what makes the album fresh. “The album stands out from my old stuff because I’ve never done any vocal albums. I’m an instrumental hip hop artist, first and foremost.” ‘We Ridin’, in all its portamento lead synth glory, harks back to MTV’s glory days of pimped car hydraulics and bejewelled sunglasses. Though through modern nuances, like the soft overhang of a deep chromatic synth wobble, Onra channels a new sound that belongs both on chilled summer playlists and the speakers of a gritty underground club. If the track is anything to go by, Fundamentals is a multi-layered album that any hip hop lover can look forward to.

THE INTERNAL MONOLOGUE OF

“I USUALLY CARRY AROUND A NOTEBOOK IN MY BACKPACK, SO I DON’T FORGET TO WRITE ANYTHING DOWN.” elbourne is a hot spot for music, “but it’s not competitive,” says Courtney Barnett, the blue eyed Aussie who recently rocked the stage at SXSW, and garnered a glittering 8.6 review on Pitchfork for her new LP, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. “Everyone just loves making music. Yeah, you know, like, all my friends are pretty much musicians.” In retrospect, it was naïve to think that Courtney Barnett could possibly be more verbose over the phone than on her LP. But when you know her ‘internal monologue’, as she puts it, is constantly streaming, her relaxed way of speaking comes as a relief. Sometimes I Sit has musical qualities reminiscent of ‘90s grunge music, carrying a kind of BBQ slacker rock sound that’s easy to listen to –

but also, in Courtney’s case, deeply affecting. The music itself, driven by a brilliantly proficient Courtney on the guitar, only fills one third of the record’s belly. The rest is fed by her conversational and rambling lyrics, delivered in a deadpan style as if she’s trying to sing her train of thought on the spot. When asked how she reels in her constant influx of lyrical inspiration, she mumbles, “Um, well yeah like, I usually carry around a notebook in my backpack, you know, I just try to write everything down so I don’t forget it.” The album was long anticipated by a swarm of followers she had picked up since releasing her double EP A Sea of Split Peas in 2013. “Releasing that EP was the moment when I finally felt comfortable in my songwriting,” Courtney says. “IT’S IMPORTANT TO EXPRESS THESE KINDS OF THOUGHTS, BIG OR SMALL, THROUGH MUSIC.”

<Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit> Release on 20th March 3

Courtney channelled her talents through a variety of art forms before recognising her place as a solo artist. In her late teens, she attended the Tasmanian School of Art to study drawing and photography, but later dropped out to concentrate on refining her music. “I just wasn’t really focusing that much,” she shrugs, “I felt like I was wasting my time.” Though her artwork continues to play a part in her career. She designs her album covers and artwork herself, playing on similarities she finds between her art and her music. “It’s all pretty simple,” she says, “like, my artwork it just line drawings and just really basic ideas. But, like my music, it’s slightly observational, like, based on what’s around me - what I’m seeing and doing.” In her lyrics, the mundane is morphed into the poetic, and aggression is balanced with fleeting moments of raw vulnerability. One moment she’ll be considering whether or not to go to a party, the next she’ll touch on her fear of dying in her sleep; one minute she’ll be house hunting, the next she’s distracted after noticing an old photo of a Vietnam soldier in a widow’s home. “I think each song is just a reflection of my mood or whatever, at the time I was writing it,” she says. “You know how the mood helps set the tone, like the lyrical tone and the musical tone, and yeah.” Throughout the album, Courtney wobbles between witty observation – describing roadkill as “kangaroo taxidermy” and “a possum Jackson Pollock painted on the tar” as she drives with her girlfriend to buy organic vegetables in ‘Dead Fox’- and self-uncertainty – “I don’t know quite who I am, but man I am trying” in ‘Small Poppies’.

022

BOOM MAGAZINE

In fact, Courtney’s selfuncertainty seems to underlie much of the record. Even at the album’s most aggressive, like the fast ‘Pedestrian At Best’, where she powers through a confused and angry train of thought – “I’m resentful, I’m having an existential time crisis what bliss, daylight savings won’t fix this mess” – she relieves it with a self-deprecating chorus: “put me on a pedestal and I’ll only disappoint you.” The album ultimately culminates in ‘Kim’s Caravan’, a hurricane track of humanitarian crisis, where all of her self-consciousness entwines with a sad and introspective realisation of her surroundings, and she drinks away her sorrows to an echoing climb of cymbals and distortion - all brought on by the sight of a dead seal on the beach: “Guess I would wanna die too,” Courtney whispers, “with people putting oil into my air.” There are a few times in the album where Courtney refers to larger issues in the world. She comments, “Music is a platform for communication and ideas, sharing ideas and emotion, so you know, big ideas or not, it’s important to be able to express these kinds of thoughts through music.” In ‘Dead Fox’, where she’s driving down a highway with her girlfriend to buy organic vegetables: “Maybe we should mull over culling cars instead of sharks, or just lock them up in parks where we can go and view them.” It’s lines like these, hidden among the sunniest lyrics, that hit you hard, leaving you bruised as you float along with Courtney into her next poignant train of thought. Courtney Barnett is the new cool girl on the scene, but she’s probably too busy scribbling down ideas in her notebook to notice.

FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE DESTRUCTION OF LAST YEAR’S ‘INVASION WAVE’, FRENCH URBAN MOSAIC ARTIST INVADER RETURNS TO HK

ipping down public works of art doesn’t lend well to achieving recognition as Asia’s creative hub, but last year, it’s just what the Hong Kong government did. To some artists it might have been discouraging, but French urban artist Invader, whose pixellated mosaics fell victim to the stubborn Highway Department early last year, has taken it in his stride. This month, he returns to Hong Kong with an exhibition called Wipe Out!, and it’s theme: destruction of his street art by the government. You’d know if you’d seen a piece by Invader. Often placed 10-15 feet above eye-level (in order to minimise accessibility by authorities), his ‘70s video game-inspired characters are created by tiles and cement, arranged as a mosaic in the style of giant pixellation. FLIPSIDE Rubik’s Cube enthusiasts pioneered in the ‘80s by rearranging the cubes into patterns. Invader used the idea as inspiration to create giant space invaders with the cubes, painting nine individual ‘pixels’ for the face of each cube before stacking them into a complete image. In Hong Kong, a city that so far has experienced three “invasion waves”, he adapted his mosaics by giving them an Eastern twist; portraying martial arts characters like Bruce Lee, Hong Kong Phooey and Thomas from Kung-Fu Master, as well as sticking, for the most part, to lucky colours red and gold. The first ‘invasion’ of Hong Kong happened in 2001, with 19 pieces. In 2002, he installed six additional pieces. His third invasion left 48 further pieces pasted strategically around Hong Kong, the majority of which were

torn down soon after, for unexplained ‘safety reasons’. Some still remain, but you have to look very hard. In a statement, Invader compared the destruction of his works to the fate of Tsang Chou Choi’s works (known more popularly as the ‘King of Kowloon’, due to the manifesto-esque claims in his work that he was the ruler of Kowloon), the legendary ramblings of which once covered the streets of Hong Kong but were consistently painted over - and mostly ‘cleaned up’ after his death in 2007. “Saddened and affected”, Invader asked the Hong Kong authorities to reconsider what their true stance on street art is: “What message would you send to your citizens? What modern cultural heritage do you want to leave them? What is the real place of art in your beautiful city?”

THE STEAK FRITES At first we thought it was just a fad in Hong Kong, but over the past year steak frites restaurants have multiplied like rabbits. With Le French May underway, we decided to test out three of Hong Kong’s most popular versions of the French dish in order to track down the best steak frites experience.

raditional Parisian diner le Relais de L’Entrecôte is world famous for its steak frites dish, largely down to the mystery sauce slathered on the meat. We were excited to try the dish that more or less launched the world’s enthusiasm for steak frites, but sadly we were a bit disappointed. The set meal at le Relais de L’Entrecôte is 100% grass-fed sirloin from Australia. The steak is around 7oz, presented in two servings, with unlimited fries. Since recently, there’s also a light lunch option with just one serving of steak and one serving of fries, which has apparently been very popular, but didn’t sound like enough to us. The staff recommended we try it rare or medium rare, so we got one of each. The rare was perfectly tender, but disappointingly the medium rare was chewy, leaning more on the medium/well-done side. The famous brownish green sauce is used in each of the 18 restaurants across Europe, the Middle East and Asia, but supposedly only one person in the world, the daughter of the original creator Paul Gineste de Saurs, knows the recipe.

To taste, it’s mustardy - you’re even encouraged to add more French mustard to it from a pot on the table. It’s simultaneously creamy and vinegary, and it’s easy to see why it’s become so popular around the world, but it overpowers most of the taste in the actual steak. The fries are freshly hand cut, and completely unseasoned. As a result, they are sweet with the natural taste of the European potatoes, which creates a nice dynamic against the pepperiness of the sauce. The dessert was ultimately the highlight of our meal. The most popular dish is the Vacherin D’été, a beautifully balanced tower of cream, meringue, vanilla ice cream and raspberry sorbet. It was a lovely finisher to the experience. We can’t help but think le Relais de l’Entrecôte is a little overrated. This might be largely down to the fact that there are other places in Hong Kong that have worked on the French dish and evolved it into something a little more satisfying. That being said, it’s a lovely representation of quaint French gastronomy, and its trimmed meat makes for a lighter and leaner meal.

La Vache! Rating 評級:

ew places in Hong Kong boast an atmosphere like La Vache! on Peel Street, but does their staple dish live up to the hype? After a boozy lunch session at the popular French hideaway, we certainly think so. Walking under the neon signs of La Vache! into its interior is a quirky experience in itself. The walls are lined with red and white-checkered tablecloths in front of either drawings of French scenes or wood paneled mirrors, and the bar is lit like a smoky Parisian cocktail bar. The set meal begins with a light and crispy walnut salad, paired with soft and warm bread with real and addictive French butter. While we finished our salads, our orders were taken (i.e., how we wanted our steak cooked) and a candle was lit in the centre of the table. The steak arrived not long after on a silver plate, which was placed on top of the candle in the traditional French style. The steak at La Vache is a trimmed entrecôte (although a few small chunks of fat are still in the meat), served with unlimited thin cut fries. Our first round of fries had hardened slightly since cooking, but the restaurant’s

Our second round of fries later on were piping hot, salty, and dangerously moreish. The meat (we ordered rare, as recommended) is wonderfully cooked; browned to perfection on the outside with a juicy, pink middle. The creamy Béarnaise signature sauce not only serves as a dipper for the fries, but also perfectly balances out the richness of the meat and the house red. The whole experience is essentially a flawless steak frites dish. Hoping for something light and sweet for dessert, we were slightly let down with a fairly tasteless profiterole. Though a meal at La Vache! usually includes a wide choice of dessert from a tray, including a cheese platter and fresh fruit tarts, so the profiterole could be more or less excused. Of the three restaurants we went to, La Vache! all-round won for atmospheric experience - a brilliant and tasty spot to book a table for a birthday dinner or to take visitors.

Steak Frites by The Butcher’s Club Rating

he Butcher’s Club have pushed their boundaries as beef specialists by tapping into the traditional French dish, with indulgent, delicious and original results. And when we say indulgent, we mean that you should probably prepare to unbuckle your belt by the time the meal is over. We sat down in the warm red and mahogany interior, the chefs in the open kitchen sprung into action, and within minutes our meal had begun. A traditional steak frites meal begins with a light walnut salad to tickle your appetite before the meat marathon. Steak Frites by the Butcher’s Club has gone an extra mile with their Wedge Salad which is far from light and healthy. The salad is much like a simplified American Cobb salad, drizzled with a blue cheese dressing that contrasts playfully with chunks of mapleglazed bacon and sweet cherry tomatoes. As an appetiser salad, it’s a little heavy - but we got the feeling that this was kind of the point. The most popular order for the main course is the 14oz 40Day Dry-Aged Rib-Eye & Duck Fat

Fries, which comes with Béarnaise, Peppercorn or Horseradish sauce. A medium-rare order (they recommend medium-rare for its tendency to bring out all the flavours of the marbled beef) landed on our table, giving off a meaty and buttery scent that set off waterworks in our mouths. Dry-aged beef is what The Butcher’s Club takes pride in; their Black Angus beef is grown on a farm in New South Wales then aged at a private Butcher’s Club facility tucked away in Aberdeen. This particular slab of meat, which arrived neatly lined against its bone, was succulent and strong in flavour - combining a fair amount of fat with the aged meat’s distinctive taste. Even after cooling, the steak was tender throughout; plus, it was a great size. And of course, the thick duck fat fries, for which The Butcher’s Club is famous, melt on the tongue. It’s unlikely that anyone who isn’t a devout calorie-counter could possibly dislike them. But, for the health conscious diner, there are still options. MARSHALL JEFFERSON

& The Genesis of House

e’s known the world over as one of the pioneers of house music, but Marshall Jefferson grew up listening to Deep Purple and Elton John. Things are rarely as they seem, writes Oliver Clasper. 1984 was a significant year in American music. Another pioneering artist who also had the initials MJ was cleaning up with his hit songs ‘Beat It’ and ’Thriller’, while out of the ashes of disco a new underground sound was emerging: house. At the time Chicago was home to the legendary nightclub The Warehouse. It was here, under the musical direction of the late New York transplant Frankie Knuckles, that house music grew (the term itself originating from the name of the club). The young people yearned for it because it was the disco and soul and R&B they loved, but with an edge and rawness that took it to a new level. Throbbing to the sounds of house, Chicago was the place to be. Exactly three decades on and Marshall Jefferson is reminiscing about the halcyon days. He explained how it was his friend Jesse Saunders’ 1984 track ‘On and On’ that was the

true catalyst, being the first labelled ‘house’ track to be sold to the public: “That was a seminal moment, and from there everyone felt they could make records. Until then you thought you had to be a trained musician, or have a studio, or know how to play an instrument. Suddenly you could do it all on your own. It just exploded.” According to Marshall Jefferson, the popularity and success of house music in Chicago was also, in part, due to its ability to repel the city’s 「house」音樂,是指那裡所播的音樂) 。這 gangs. There’s a certain way you can play a track. It’s hard to explain. But I believe I’m someone that can do it.” There was a great sense back then in the mid-80s that anyone could make music, so they did. What’s crucial about this moment, almost exactly thirty years ago, is the notion that new movements and genres are born out of experimentation as well as competition. It was a metaphorical explosion, and out of it came one of the most important forms of American music since jazz - thanks in no small part to Marshall Jefferson and his brothers in Chicago.

Marshall Jefferson, who hadn’t been a fan of dance music, became a convert after catching Ron Hardy’s set at The Warehouse - which had been renamed Muzik Box in 1982 after it doubled its entry fee and Frankie Knuckles left to set up his own club, The Power Plant. Hardy created his own custom edits with reel-to-reel tape, and altering the sound system at clubs specifically for his set. “Ron Hardy and Larry Levan were sensational DJs. I haven’t seen many that did what they did. Derrick May too. But there aren’t many like that. It’s just that some DJs just know how to rock the crowd. Kevin Saunderson’s the same. It’s a very, very short list.” And once Jefferson heard ‘On and On’ he knew for sure that he wanted to make his own records, not just dance to them. Once the clubbing bug bit him there was no turning back. It was while he was working at the Post Office alongside his good friend Curtis McClain that he started DJing, inspired by the respected local radio crew the Hot Mix 5. Hiatus Kaiyote

A New Soul Sound from an Unexpected Place SULTRY SINGING AND COMPLEX INSTRUMENTALS FROM MELBOURNE BASED FOUR-PIECE usic heavy-weights including Gilles Peterson, Erykah Badu, Q-Tip, Questlove, and even a guy formerly known as Prince, have been heaping praise on a four-person band from Melbourne named Hiatus Kaiyote. Formed in 2011, Hiatus Kaiyote creates music that straddles the worlds of RnB, soul, and jazz. Group members Nai Palm, Perrin Moss, Paul Bender, and Simon Mavin make music that is both entirely original and refreshingly unconventional. Their talent has not gone without critical acclaim, receiving a Grammy nomination in 2013 for best RnB performance. The group’s single ‘Nakamarra’ released off of the EP Tawk Tomahawk, provides a good introduction to their music. ‘Nakamarra’ is a sumptuous ride that showcases the vocal dexterity of lead singer Nai Palm. On repeated listening, it’s hard to think of any song that is as technically complex, or as unpredictable, yet leaves as much of an impression. Nakamarra somehow succeeds in being catchy, and yet simultaneously challenging in a technical jazz vocal sort of way. The remix of ‘Nakamarra’, featuring rapper Q-Tip, is both a throwback and a successor to the ‘90s Jazzmatazz era, when groups like The Brand New Heavies re-launched

M

the popularity of sophisticated jazz and funk. However, whereas the ‘90s rebirth of soul was referencing something old, the songs of Hiatus Kaiyote sound original and new. A listen to the music of the quartet reveals anything but lazy song making. The songs don’t rely on any formulas, or easy hooks. For example, Nai Palm’s vocals ascend in interesting places and in ways that don’t fit standard practice. Likewise in their new single, ‘Shaolin Monk Motherfunk’, the beat switches unexpectedly, giving way to an interesting percussion change-up beneath Nai Palm’s vocal gymnastics. There’s a maturity and innovation present in Hiatus Kaiyote’s work that’s rarely found in contemporary music. In modern times, major labels won’t take the risk or dedicate the time to develop a group with an unconventional sound. Acts with half the talent would be forced to dumb down their music and make it easy to digest for mainstream tastes. Born in Melbourne, outside of commercial music capitals like New York and L.A., the group was able to develop their own sound and not be rushed onto the market before honing their sonic identity. Hiatus Kaiyote’s highly anticipated new album, Choose Your Weapon, is out on May 4th.

Yogyakarta, a.k.a. Jogja, is known for its arts and rich history. As the capital of Yogyakarta Special Region in Java, the city and its surroundings are a melting pot of scenic and cultural activities, perfect for the passionate traveller. Interesting Facts about Jogja • The Yogyakarta region is headed by its own monarchy. • The city was the capital of Indonesia between 1946 and 1949. • Indonesia’s ‘city of love’, much like Paris in France and Verona in Italy.

The exchange rate between HKD and Indonesian Rupiah can get quite confusing (100HKD is 166798.9 IDR). To avoid too much confusion, try to think of it as 12HKD is 20,000 IDR, and 120HKD is 200,000. N.B. If someone asks you for ‘170’, they mean 170,000.

Getting around

The most exciting way of travelling around Jogja is by hailing a becak (a cycle rickshaw). Be sure to settle a price before you get on the becak; the real price is around rp.15.000 per 2km (the starting price), then 10.000 per km for the rest of the ride. You can also rent your own bicycle if you’re feeling active, and there’s a reliable bus system (the TransJogia) which operates from 6am to 10pm. The bus drivers are helpful, and you can buy tickets at the bus stations. Taxis are also dependable, but make sure the taxi is metered.

Metalface

Twenty-one years ago Elektra panicked and pulled the plug on KMD’s sophomore release. It was 1994, and the more officious members of American public life were clamping down on various artistic ventures they deemed ‘obscene’, often affecting music by black artists more than any other. Alongside the Parental Advisory stickers that had been forced upon many rap and hip hop albums since 1985, record labels began to worry that that a release’s political, social, or even artistic, statement would lead to weak commercial sales. Black Bastards suffered that fate. The cover features a Sambo figure (a ‘buffoonish’ white representation of slaves) hanging at the gallows; the

message was clear and provocative, but it also happens to be, according to many fans and critics, ‘the best rap album you’ve never heard’. It’s seen the light of day twice before, once in 2001 and again in 2008, that last time courtesy of one of the most revered rappers and producers of the modern era, MF Doom, via his label Metalface which has also put this re-mastered version out, replete with new, interactive pop-out album artwork that ups the ante on the provocation. Black Bastards also marks the second long player appearance by the very same MF Doom, going by the name Zev Love X, alongside his brother DJ Subroc who tragically died in a car accident shortly before the album was complete. KMD had already

It’s solipsistic, dark, and hard-hitting. The myriad jazz breaks and samples, dusty boom-bap drums and internalised lyrics about addiction and race make for an album that’s way too good to be ignored. Check it out.

The Cornish DJ and producer Luke Vibert, who has been making some of the most interesting and varied electronic music in the UK and beyond since the early 90s, releases a brand new EP under his new alias Luke Warm. Over the course of four tracks, all of which have a distinctly different tempo and ambiance, Vibert places slices of warm, hard-hitting house alongside dreamy, drifting slower-tempo tracks.

The constant battle between ‘supplier’ and ‘demander’ will never be resolved when it comes to art. The producer makes what he or she wants to make and the decision ultimately rests with them. Scuba’s 2010 album Triangulation was evocative, original, and timely, whereas his output over the last few years has felt flaccid and borderline commercial. There are a few decent tracks here, but you get the feeling you’ve heard it before.

Not for the faint-hearted or the maladventurous, this record is a wild plethora of influences, inspirations, tight connections, loose associations, and exploratory sonic elements. There’s some official Japanese anime scoring in the mix, alongside a host of other sounds and ideas that weave in, and then out, with the quiet moments immediately following the aural assaults. The final nineteen minute opus is the standout track.

There’s no doubt that the '90s aesthetic has been cool for some time now. From lumberjack shirts and Doc Martens to tie-dye and Parental Advisory t-shirts, it’s not just the music but the fashion too. Massachusetts band Speedy Ortiz follows this trend to a certain degree, sounding ever so similar to Pavement. But the lead singer’s raw lyrics and lack of pretension make for a great follow up to Major Arcana.

Fifteen albums over the course of nineteen years has to be too much. There’s no doubt that Squarepusher (aka Tom Jenkinson) is a highly accomplished musician and producer, having traversed as well as anyone the myriad paths of ambient, IDM, breaks, jungle, techno, noise and so on, but this album is unclear, noisy (in the worst way), and just sort of grating sonically. Props to Jenkinson for many things, just not this.

REVIEW: NIXON MINI BLASTER PORTABLE SPEAKER A Durable Beachside Companion

The water-resistant Nixon Mini Blaster packs a heavy sound in a small footprint.

D

esigned to be sand, water, and shock resistant, the portable speaker by Nixon comes with an ABS exterior that makes it less likely to break or be damaged by being dropped or kicked.

• An easy to carry strap and built-in bar allow you to hang it anywhere even on a bike. The lightweight design and rugged build mean you can throw it in your bag and not worry about it. • The speaker connects wirelessly to your phone via Bluetooth. It paired easily with an older iPhone during our test and worked from over 20 feet away. • A battery life of eight to ten hours means it will likely last as long as your party or beach trip. The speaker conveniently charges via USB cable. • Available in ten colours, plus special, limited edition models, it's simple, yet stylish. With a surprisingly loud volume, the Mini Blaster is enough to completely fill a good-sized living room or easily annoy your neighbours on the beach. The bass is also very good for such a small package, with no distortion, even at high volume. The Verdict: This useful, lightweight speaker is an ideal accessory when you want to share your music either indoors, outside, or on the go. The price, at around $900 HKD is cheaper than other brands on the market and delivers more volume than you'll often need.

Notes From The Underground Interview: SCRATCHA DVA By: Sync Sing Sin

syncsingsin

As a lot of us are still raving about SCRATCHA DVA’s set at XXX last year. BASS MUSIC CHINA (www. bassmusicchina.com) , who started it all, have already taken further actions. Asking the man to contribute to their Guest Mix series, (other notable guests include OM UNIT and our very own JAMLINE,). which even comes with unreleased tracks! I thought there was no better time to get in touch with the man to ask him a handful of question. Big up to BMC for hooking this up! How do you define ‘Bass Music’? I’ve never really used that term unless I really had to; never thought it was the right name for what was going on at the time because just naming a genre ‘bass’ doesn’t really define anything really. Reggae has

mad amounts of bass so what does that mean? But the name kinda stuck. I guess because a lot more DJs were crossing genres so it just made it easier for the journalists and promoters to label stuff. How would you describe the current UK scene? I personally don’t think that question is as important anymore as it maybe once was when all eyes were on the UK looking for what would come next from the underground. But now, so many other cities around the world are forming interesting sounds and creating stuff without the help of the UK. How is it being signed to Hyperdub, and how does it spark your creativity, if at all?

syncsingsin

Working with Hyperdub is nice. I played so many shows last year I lost track of production, so at the end of last year and the beginning of this year I’ve got back to working on new releases. I can definitely say that the TEKLIFE movement has definitely sparked a new energy in me to get me working again. They are workaholics and with sick producers like them and Ikonika and CoolyG around, you gotta stay on your toes or you will be easily forgotten about. There are quite a few unreleased tunes on the BMC mix, what makes you decide to include them? I love sharing unreleased music to people, especially in clubs. My ideal DJ set would be to play to a crowd who have no idea which tracks I’m playing. That’s not so easy at the

moment because clubbers and music consumers process music so quickly today. But places like BMC and Dada in Beijing still have a good vibe and a good amount of people there want to hear new sounds. You’ve been to Hong Kong last year. What’s your impression of the city? I was most bugged out by the buses – yeah, that was trippy, seeing London buses fly past me was so confusing. I had a good ramen, which I still haven’t been able to recreate back in London. Unfortunately I didn’t get to spend loads of time there, but the people there seemed really nice - I definitely wanna try and stay a few days next time I decide to go back over that way, hopefully soon.

What’s your typical day like? Lately my typical day has been literally getting up, eating, and then getting on the production indoors. Most times if I’m indoors and I need to work on tracks I can’t wash for a couple of days. I find it ruins my creative vibe. Lastly, where do you get all those nice looking glasses? I can’t tell you that!

DVA

80s’ Leftover Lock My Heart Bracelet By:Prupru

eightyleftover.blogspot.hk

There is a trend that boys tend to buy a bracelet for their girls in Valentine’s day, especially after Pandora came to the market. Whenever it’s Valentine’s Day or X’mas, the Pandora’s bracelet pictures that the girls have received as a gift occupy every single one of our Facebook newsfeeds. The success of Pandora is mainly down to its emphasis on the uniqueness of its bracelet. Girls can have their own bracelet with their own story by choosing different charms. Actually, this idea is not new; Links in London used this idea before, but their marketing strategy was not impactful enough in letting the market know it. While every girl is pining for a Pandora bracelet, I’d rather have one from a more low-key brand. Monica Vinader from Britain has fans like the Duchess of Cambridge

Kate Middleton. I especially love what Monica Vinader said towards her own products: “It’s not the jewellery but how you wear it that brings out magic”. Out of all its collections, Havana Friendship is its best seller. The bar is 18CT gold plated, 18CT rose gold plated and sterling silver, and you can personalize it by engraving a name or a message on it. Its simple design goes with both casual and elegant outfits. Another Italian brand, Cruciani, is also one of my favourites. The best thing about wearing a lace bracelet is that it’s weightless and dries easily, therefore you can still stay pretty by wearing it even when you sleep or take a shower. Cruciani bracelets are made of simple patterns like stars, four-leafed clovers, butterflies and orchids with colourful lace. In the Chinese philosophy of five elements, I lack fire, therefore I have bought its red chili bracelet to give more ‘fire’.

eightyleftover

If you still have no idea which bracelet to buy, you can simply ask yourself what you really want recently out of life. All the bracelets from both brands above carry a meaning which is similar to the language of flowers. I’m sure you’ll find one that suits you!

Wine and Music Austrian Indulgence, Pt.1 By:Roy Khoo roykhoo

Wine and music have long been related in the West. The famous winery Chateau Palmer in Bordeaux has tied up its culture with jazz as if ‘music & wine’ is a kind of lifestyle choice. And it seems like a natural choice; when your body moves naturally to a smooth rhythm, enjoying a sumptuous glass of wine along with your favourite type of music. Thousands of thoughts are merged into the song and you can taste the bittersweet undertones of the wine. Music changes the state of mind and stimulates the brain. It’s impossible to replicate that feeling with anything else. When you speak of music, it’s hard to ignore the music dreamland, Austria. Indeed, how could you resist a bit of Mozart, as well as the Waltz Blauen Donau and Wein, Weib und Gesang by the famous composer John Strauss II?

Music and art lovers go to Austria four planting zones with a total 〈藍色多瑙河〉和醇酒美女歌聲圓舞曲 。 to fulfill their dreams and pursuits. area of 46,000 hectares.
