This is the month to discover new sounds. More and more music hits this city each year; we’re almost on track to becoming the world’s next music capital. But there are genres that need more support in order for that to happen. One of which, hip hop, has a big following here, and has enjoyed an influx of events - from the multi-faceted Unity Jam back in May, to Dragon-i’s newfound I Love Wednesday parties. We’ve even put together our own on the 13th. But we couldn’t help but wonder why hip hop culture still struggles to make its mark in the city. Local hip hop activist, producer and performer MastaMic tells us why in B-Side (P20) as he produces his sophomore album. Plus, in BOOM Academy (P28), we fill you in on 2015’s most influential names in the genre. In case you hadn’t heard their new album Ego Death storming across the web, our cover story this month introduces you to The Internet, a brilliant soul collective from Los Angeles headed by Syd tha Kyd (P16). In our Special Feature (P24) we have a chat with the multi-talented Dev Hynes, aka electro project Blood Orange, over breakfast. Outlook Festival kicks off over in Croatia, but Hong Kong would never turn down the opportunity to celebrate - especially with such a dedicated bass music culture. Taking place at the spacious, retrostyle BBQ venue Whitehead Barbeque in Ma On Shan (which you can get to via free shuttle bus from Sunshine City Phase 4), HK's Outlook Festival Launch Party features a rich line up of local DJs, MCs, VJs and live bands, as well as live art curated by HKWalls. The line up includes names from Bass Music China and Magnetic Soul, the go-to event makers for true, unadulterated bass, as well as UK drum and bass producer Skeptical.

Imagine Dragons Smoke + Mirrors Tour Live in HK, AsiaWorld Expo The Las Vegas four-piece have taken the world by storm since releasing the hugely influential Night Visions in 2012, which garnered millions of fans with its dreamy, big room rock sound in tracks like 'Radioactive' and 'Demons'. In May this year they released Smoke + Mirrors, which climbed in no time to number one on the US Billboard album charts. This month they stop off at the AsiaWorld-Expo to show Hong Kong the true strength of the album (plus, no doubt, a few of their classic gems).

eleased on Los Angeles cult label Odd Future, The Internet’s third album, Ego Death, browses all corners of romanticism – from the art of seduction and lust, to brutal rejection and selfreflection. Syd tha Kyd and Matt Martians have created one of this year’s masterpieces. Soul music has found itself a new ambassador, and she goes by the name of Syd tha Kyd. Granted, The Internet (originally a temporary band name that never disintegrated) is a collaborative project between Syd tha Kid and Matt Martians, both members of music label and cult collective Odd Future (headed largely by flat-capped cheekyboy Tyler, the Creator). The long-budding Los Angeles duo has released two experimental soul albums previously, garnering a dedicated under-the-radar following, but their third, Ego Death, has taken

the world by storm. The band’s line up is currently six-strong, but ultimately, it’s the androgynous Syd tha Kyd under the spotlight. Recorded in her basement, the album features a number of stellar collaborations. One song, ‘For the World’, was written for The Internet by Grammy award-winning songwriter James Fauntleroy. ‘Girl’, the track currently taking social media by storm with its hypnotising tones of lust and longing and its bewitching music video, is a collaboration with electronic producer, KAYTRANADA. The record’s music ranges from pure soul jams to what could pass off as electro-RnB, but the subject matter of Ego Death follows a poignant theme. The record unravels in layers. It’s about self-humbling in the wake of narcissism – as Syd described in an interview, the album and its title are about “becoming vulnerable and

AS THE LAYERS UNRAVEL, WE OFTEN FIND OURSELVES WITH SYD IN A CLUB OR AT A PARTY, KISSING THE NECK OF HER TARGETED ONE NIGHT STAND sides to it – adding to the human quality of the record that anchors it throughout. In the sonically complex, and identifiably selfish ‘Something’s Missing’, Syd takes her date for a summer drive, explaining how actually, this relationship probably isn’t going to work right now. She coos, “I don’t wanna be without you babe,” before gently dropping the averting hint, “I just think I’m way too young to fall in love.” After a short percussive transition, Syd says her goodbyes, and walks away from the girl. A monumental transposition kicks in, in time signature and harmony, and her true thoughts are revealed. In the form of the band’s chorus, riding over a brutal, walking chromatic bassline, the real reason for the break-up is uncovered: “She only wanna get down, when no one’s around.” It rides itself out, and Syd escapes to a fictional life of crime alongside a pretty girl in the passenger seat in ‘Partners in Crime Part Three’. Life goes on.
Ego Death has struck a chord with so many people not only because of its honest representation of human callousness, but also because of its seductiveness. As its layers unravel, we often find ourselves with Syd in

a club or at a party, kissing the neck of her targeted one night stand. In ‘Go With It’ – featuring acclaimed Chicago hip hop artist Vic Mensa – she asks, “Hey, what you doing after this? Let’s get out of here – ready?” over a foot tapping amalgamation of ‘70s funk bass and muted guitar solos, straight out of a smoky jazz bar. It’s the type of wooing we’ve all encountered, whether via our own attempts or at the receiving end of someone else’s. Syd sings confessedly of her confidence and status as tools for seduction. In ‘Special Affair’, she whistles, above a looped and sultry bassline, “It’s so rare that I’m in here; don’t plan on staying too long, so you should come here and sit on this throne.” A few Patron tequilas later, the bass fades away complete with jazz kisses on the guitar, and we can assume the chase is successful. In ‘Palace/Curse’, Tyler, the Creator, and Syd, are luring women back to their pimped out house party, complete with distorted riffs courtesy of band member Steve Lacy. Though in all of the tracks in Ego Death, there’s a running theme of vulnerability. Moments of reflection, particularly in ‘Penthouse Cloud’ –

A chaotic mindset whisks us away into ¾ time, a complex jazz sequence riding us through her confusion. Should she stay and try to revive the relationship, or go home? In the early morning track ‘Under Control’ we find Syd sleepless, waking up with a promise to support her girlfriend financially. “I got you. I promise, I’m on it.” Syd’s defensive side shines through in ‘Just Sayin/I Tried’. In the first half of the song, she stands up

Local hip hop extraordinaire MastaMic lives and breathes the genre, and despite difficulties the hip hop culture faces in Hong Kong, he’s on the way to the top. We sit down to chat about he future of Hong Kong’s hip hop scene, building a fanbase, and his upcoming album.
I
n the vast majority of non-mainstream genres, it’s a real struggle to make it as a musician. Especially in a place as small as Hong Kong, where the music scene is still burgeoning, and you find more or less the same crowds at any underground event. When you live and breathe the rich culture of hip hop, the situation is all the more frustrating. Swivelling in his studio chair, local hip hop trailblazer MastaMic grumbles, “In reality, the situation is that rappers aren’t really welcome in Hong Kong. How many times do you see a poster in Lan Kwai Fong advertising a big rapper at a club? Hardly ever. They just don’t sell that many tickets.” MastaMic is one of the few underground names to have gathered a huge online following, and filled up huge venues around the city. With over 25,000 Facebook followers, he’s become a leading voice in Hong Kong’s budding hip hop scene. Somewhere above the flower markets, he’s creating his sophomore album. But before we get a chance to discuss it, he voices his opinions on local hip hop, loud and clear. In his words, “hip hop culture will never transplant directly into Hong Kong”. The only way around it, he explains, is if locals engage in the American hip hop culture. “We need to absorb the American style, and their ideas. We need to express it in our own way, as in, combine it with Hong Kong’s situation, the audience’s tastes; combine it all and we’ll be able to find a way to get people interested, and eventually buy our music.” With over ten years of experience in pushing hip hop into Hong
Kong, MastaMic has developed a strategy for commercial viability, and unfortunately, it’s not what most people would want to hear. “You’ve got to dumb that sh*t down, man. The music, the lyrics, you dumb it down. It’s the way it is.” Back in the early stages of his career, his music was much more political. But after a few hurdles, his political voice lost motivation. The final hurdle came in the form of sheer disappointment at a lack of recognition by the Chinese government on their artist blacklist during the Umbrella Revolution. “I wrote so many songs about political problems! I was like, sh*t man, I really wish I had been on that list!” To add insult to injury, MastaMic noticed that in fact, fans in Hong Kong were never actually listening to the lyrics in his political songs. “Political songs are easy tools to use in order to get attention in Hong Kong right now, but in reality people don’t try to understand your lyrics. They just want to listen to something that says ‘fu*k the government’, or, since the demonstrations, ‘fu*k the police’ or something.” He continues, “No one noticed when I put a lot of thought into my political songs, and was careful with the lyrics. I’ve just been disappointed; I haven’t written as many political songs as I used to, but it’s not because I hold back. It’s because Hong Kong isn’t quite ready to listen to this kind of music.” Aside from filtering his music lyrically, MastaMic has used other techniques to maximise his presence. Using social media strategically and posting frequently onto a YouTube account, he’s cut into the screendominated culture of the city and built a loyal online following.

MastaMic是為數不多擁有超多網上
歌曲的歌詞。 「政治歌曲其實很容易在香 你的歌詞。他們只是想聽到有罵政府，或
雨傘運動後罵警員或者其他罵人的聲音。 根本沒有人注意到我放了多少心思在我 的政治歌曲以及非常用心寫的歌詞上。我 已經很失望，我再沒有創作太多政治歌曲
了，不是因為我在忍住不寫，而是因為香 港還未準備好去聽這種音樂。」
除了在歌詞上過濾他的音樂
支持者的地下音樂明星，他在香港的演
外，MastaMic已經在用其他技術來盡量
過25,000名追隨者，成為香港嘻哈界大紅
體，頻頻發布到YouTube頻道，他已經切
出都會擠滿觀眾。在Facebook上擁有超 人。花墟市場上的某處正是他創作第二張
大碟的地方。但在討論大碟之前，他明確
地發表了對本地嘻哈的意見。他表示， 「嘻 哈文化永遠不會直接移植到香港」 。他解 釋說，其中一個方法就是要從本地人吸收
美國嘻哈文化開始。 「我們需要吸收美式 風格以及他們的想法。我們需要用自己的
方式將想法表達出來，將香港的情況，與 觀眾的口味結合，我們就能使人們感興 趣，並因而喜歡我們的嘻哈音樂。」
經過十多年在香港推動嘻哈的經
驗，MastaMic已經制定了商業可行性的戰 略，不幸的是，它並不是大多數人想要聽 到的音樂。 「你要將整件事情簡單化呀老 友！音樂、歌詞，將它們全部簡單化，就是
表現他的存在性。他有技巧地使用社交媒 入以螢幕為主導的城巿文化，並且吸引了

Furthermore, he’s made sure to take different approaches musically, no matter how ‘dumbed down’ they might be. The most notable being his ‘Hong Kong Rap Up’, inspired by Mad Skillz’ ‘Rap Up’ project in the US. What began, as he puts it, as a gimmick to him, has become a project of serious importance. “Seven or eight years ago when I was searching YouTube - which wasn’t that popular back then - I stumbled across this video by Skillz, and it really inspired me. I was like, hey, this is actually a really good idea if I can do something like this in Hong Kong, since we have a lot of news here.” Though where Skillz’ rap up focuses mainly on the entertainment and hip hop industries, MastaMic’s covers almost everything - from entertainment and government to social problems and celebrity gossip. “At first I was trying to draw in people’s attention. But as I’ve grown older I’ve realised that it’s quite an incredible project to take on. I began to take it quite seriously, at least in the lyrics. I don’t take the video too seriously because I know the quality is bad due to lack of budget, but I’ve tried to make the lyrics as real as possible, striking a balance between seriousness and humour.

And now the ‘Rap Up’ is more like a responsibility for me.” MastaMic swivels in his chair and hits the space bar. Out of the studio speakers erupts heavy tribal beats it’s a track off the sophomore album (set to be released in 2016) that narrates the similarities between a jungle and the city we live in. “We live in a dog eat dog world,” he says, “we’re always eliminating other people, and taking their places in society. It’s like animals killing each other.” We enjoy the rawness of the track for a while, before he switches over to what will be the lead single, ‘Good Times’. “This is exactly what I mean by dumbing it down,” he says. The track is breezy and light, in the style of a Pharrell Williams hit - “radio friendly,” in MastaMic’s words. But as he explains the lyrics to us, it’s clear that ultimately it’s this man’s talent and originality that’s got him this far. He explains the values that lie underneath his music: “There are plenty of songs with the title ‘Good Times’, but this is different. These are my good times. This is my story, and I’ve used it to try to inspire you to have your own life. That’s what being a rapper’s all about.” If hip hop ever makes it big here, we know one man to thank.

E D G O N A O BL OR tanding solidly in the middle of the sonic vortex is Devonté Hynes, the North London-bred Brooklynite, whose music means more to you than you think. Originally rising to fame in the ‘00s in dance punk band Test Icicles, Hynes has dipped his toe into a huge breadth of styles. We’ve heard him belt wistfulness over driving guitars in his work as indie king Lightspeed Champion, and collaborate with The Chemical Brothers, Florence and the Machine, Basement Jaxx and Solange Knowles, to name just a few. The first Blood Orange album, Coastal Grooves (2011), marked Hynes’ initial slide away from indie and into electro. Though with the release of Cupid Deluxe in 2013, Hynes had climbed to a new level of creativity, coupling electro-funk with forlorn lyricism. It was a musically refined, heart-wrenching study into sexuality and heartache, in the aesthetic style of a late-night stroll beneath New York City’s streetlights. At a live Blood Orange show, a stellar line up of vocalists and musicians backs him, but ultimately

Devonté Hynes is a master of all trades, but as Blood Orange, he’s an electro-pop frontman. Over a cup of coffee, he tells us about his ultimate ties to music, life with colour synesthesia, and the pressure of releasing an album in the modern industry.

And it isn’t just limited to creating music. He’s also an author, film score composer, dancer and producer - a master of all trades, if ever there was one. “I had the greatest breakthrough of my life a few years ago,” he says. “I realised that I have all these different interests in different fields, but what I do, and what I’m comfortable with doing, and ultimately what I’m best at doing, is music. So I realised I can work in all these other fields and interests as long as I stick with what I know I’m comfortable with. Like, I love film so I can work on film scores, and I love art so I can work on installation coverages. I feel like I’ve hit every corner that I want to do, and I’ve tied them all back to my music.” A huge part of Hynes’ musical output stems from his colour synesthesia, where anything he hears translates cognitively into a colour. “I get really upset if there’s music or sounds that I don’t like,” he says. “I love pinks, reds, yellows, and blues. They’re kind of my favourite. They’re the kind of colours that fall into a lot of F chords, C Major, A Minor, F Minor, and then the 9ths of any of those chords. They always sound beautiful to me.” As a result, his music revolves around the same chord sequences. “Most of my songs are in the same key, but only a few people call me out on it,” he laughs. Blood Orange is set to release another album, the first since the critically adored Cupid Deluxe. But Hynes doesn’t know when, and he’s
in no rush to set a date. Although it’s a work in progress, its physical release is the last thing on his mind. “Once you put music out there, it’s not seen as you giving music to people that want to hear it. It’s viewed in this weird way, as if you’re trying to make the world hear what you do, which is the last thing I’m trying to do.” It’s hard to believe that this was the case back in Hynes’ early career. Though nowadays, having built such a golden reputation in the industry, we wonder if he feels less pressure to appeal commercially than back then. “Well, I wonder,” he scratches his head. “I don’t really know what reputation I do have,” he laughs. “All I know is that I don’t want to add to the shit in the world. I just mean that there’s a lot of noise and crap that exists. There’s no gain in adding anything to that.” Chasing his train of thought, he continues, “I would almost rather

disvalue all the things I’ve made in the last couple of years that could be on an album, and just keep that for myself to listen to, and then intentionally work on something for the sake of putting it out. I’m not saying the stuff I make doesn’t have a meaning, because it means so much to me. But I’d rather do something that could affect someone somewhere, even if it was just one person. I feel like there’s a lot of negativity in the world, so I’d rather add or give something even slightly positive.” Through his music, Hynes channels his own hardships, and he questions whether or not this will continue to appeal to his fans. “If I was a writer maybe this would be my own journal, and then if I wanted to focus on it I’d write an article more directed. I’ve been thinking maybe from now on if I want to address these personal topics, maybe I should actually go in with some kind of thought process if I know that it will end up being heard in the world somehow.” Nonetheless, judging by the themes that have been playing on his mind this year, Hynes’ new material is already set to relate to masses of people. He lists the troubles that have been affecting his writing: the death of a loved one (his grandfather recently passed); all the deaths of black people in America (as heard in the references to the Charleston church shooting in his spontaneously released track ‘Do You See My Skin Through the Flames’ in July); growing up and remembering one’s childhood; and understanding one’s identity. Hidden Agenda was a full house on the 15th July, as H&M Loves Music presented to Hong Kong some of the best international talent. The night began with local disco DJs Living Discoheads, before Blood Orange took to the stage, and the room fell eerily silent. This is a man the music world looks very much up to, and the more introspective his music gets, the more influential he’ll become.

The Harlem hip hop giant released one of the most influential albums of the year in May: At.Long.Last.A$AP. The album hit the top spot in the US Billboard and US Top R&B/Hip Hop charts, maximising his influence as an idol both musically and visually. His biggest non-musical influence has been on Harlem and The Bronx, where his street-meets-high fashion style is imitated by thousands on a daily basis. He’s been on the scene for a while, but 2015’s been his year.

He’s connected with all corners of entertainment – from NBA teams to Hollywood. His influence comes not only from his music but also his easy-going personality and handling of fame.

計學學士畢業生Eva Choi及其系列， 「過路 人」 （Passerby）獲得評審團的一致青睞。
與大部分土生土長的香港人不一
樣，Eva說她對中國人的身份有很強烈的
歸屬感，而且對於中國歷史也有很深的了 解，這也解釋了一點，為什麼溥儀會在她 設計作品時浮現於腦海中。但是，在這背 後其實有著更深層的原因。
「溥 儀 的 一 生 完 全 符 合 了 我 想 在 是
次系列中所表達的兩大中心思想——『生 命到底是什麼？』和『人是如何形成？』 。而
令我專注研究溥儀的原因是他與其他皇 帝不同，他以三歲之齡登上由伯父而非親 父所傳的皇位。」她說。
也許大家未必如Eva一樣熟悉中國歷
史。其實溥儀在中日戰爭和國共內戰期 間，當中國陷入軍閥亂戰時，曾經經歷長 時間的苦難和嚴峻的考驗。
ashion and the last Chinese emperor Pu Yi don’t come up in the same sentence very often; but the latter inspired a collection designed by Eva Choi, the winner of the Raffles Fashion Show at Hong Kong Fashion Week 2015. Raffles International College’s Fashion Show, called ‘Visceral Instinct’, was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Out of the ten collections showcased, the Bachelor Of Design graduate, Eva Choi and her stunning collection, ‘Passerby’, wooed the jury. The collection, which embodied a mixture of existentialism and Chinese modern history, won the Brand Ready Award for many of its garments’ subtle and unique visual appeal. With a gorgeous finale piece that featured red tassles and peppered fur sleeves, Eva also nabbed the Collection of the Year Award. Unlike the majority who are born and raised in Hong Kong, Eva told us that she had a very strong sense of Chinese identity and deep understanding towards Chinese history, which partly explained why the history of Pu Yi popped into her

head when she designed the pieces. However, the story of the China’s last emperor inspired her in many ways. “The life of Pu Yi perfectly fits the two central questions that I wanted to raise in my collection: ‘What is life about?’ And, ‘What is it to be human?’ what drew me to focus on Pu Yi was that he was unlike the other emperors because he ascended the throne at the age of three, by way of his uncle instead of his father,” she says. For those who are not as familiar with Chinese history as Eva, Pu Yi experienced a lot of hard times when China fell into the hands of rival warlords during the Sino-Japanese and Taiwanese war era. ‘The inspiration of my collection mainly comes from modern China but the whole idea dates back to the transformation of Pu Yi from a fortunate emperor to a slave. Eventually, when the ‘New’ China was established, Pu Yi slowly became a normal person again because he finally left the palace behind.’ She says. A closer look at Eva’s pieces reveals an avoidance of stereotypical Chinese symbolism. For instance, Instead of dragons and lions, she uses prints of
flying cranes, alongside elements of early 20th century menswear. “Dragons are too old to represent the ‘New’ China, and the embellishments bring out the central themes of the new, modernized China. During the first two weeks of preparation, I did a lot of research into the era of Pu Yi’s life living in a city, which serves as a direction throughout the whole collection. I also touched on the idea of feminismin the New China era by deliberately creating a transparent top.” Apart from designing the pieces, crafting a title for any collection is never an easy task. The title ‘Passerby’ was inspired by the Tang-dynasty poem ‘Lang Tao Sha’. Eva explains, “The two lines in the poem convey the message that a lot of people don’t realize they are living in the world where all things will fade away someday.” After such an impressive display at the Fashion Show, there’s no doubt Eva has a sparkling future ahead of her. Perhaps following in the footsteps of last year’s winner, Sue Suh (who has since displayed across the globe), there’s no doubt Eva is ready to make to her mark on the fashion industry.

BOOM’S KITCHEN he California Tower in Lan Kwai Fong is hardly a secret, but up on the seventh floor we discovered a gorgeous culinary gem, which is no doubt on its way to becoming one of the more popular date night spots in Hong Kong. Brought to the table was the best meal this reviewer has enjoyed in quite some time - which is saying something in a foodie city like ours. The concept behind Porterhouse by Laris (that’s David Laris of the late Bellbrook on Hollywood Road) is a marriage between a classic American steakhouse and Australian culinary flair, named Porterhouse after the original Manhattan steak. But its seafood shines just as brightly as the beef, displayed on a platter at the front of the house. It’s elegant and unassuming; simple and absolutely delicious. It’s the ultimate place to impress your significant other; whether it’s for a first date, a birthday or an anniversary. Our meal began with a glass of Australian chardonnay, along with a warm, crispy loaf of freshly baked bread with two types of butter. Already it was clear that Porterhouse by Laris paid attention to detail, and throughout the meal we wouldn’t be disappointed. Our starters were the King Crab and Avocado Cocktail, boasting an incredibly fresh taste and rounded out by sweet and tangy tomato sauce. The Heart of Romaine Salad was expertly balanced with just the right amount of crumbled blue cheese, a feat that’s often overdone. The oysters were incredibly fresh - complete with their natural liquor that’s often washed out in preparation- and topped with house condiments, one of which was a tangy watermelon jus. Next up was the Beef and Barley soup, essentially a broth made from

King Crab and Avocado Cocktail
beef bone and black truffle, filled with hearty root vegetables. It sparked a certain nostalgia for childhood days and wintery stews, with tender meat and a gravy taste reminiscent of a gourmet English roast. Despite its wholesome flavours, it was a lovely refreshment before the mouthwatering main course. The steak arrived, a 26oz Australian grass-fed T-Bone, cooked rare and to perfection. A tray of condiments came round and we got a splash of each one on the side of our plates - truffle butter, red wine, black peppercorn, teriyaki glaze, harissa and béarnaise. We also decided to try each of six the mustards available - two of which, the American beer flavoured mustard and the madras curry flavoured mustard worked superbly with the meat. The T-Bone had bottomless flavours; with every bite a new one emerged. It had just the right amount of fat to bring out the meat’s organic flavour, and was charred on the edges for a subtle charcoal taste. The selection of salts was something of a novelty, including ‘Himalayan Pink’ from Pakistan, ‘Black Lava’ which was mixed with charcoal, ‘Fleur de Sel’ crystal salt from France, and ‘Murray River’ from Australia. We found a new dimension of taste in the steak by pairing the Black Lava salt with the Madras curry mustard. On the side, we had sweet Maple Glazed Carrots, Triple-Cooked Fries with Sea Salt and Vinegar Spray, and a robust mac and cheese. By this point, we were full to the brim, but even the sides were too delicious to leave alone, and we tumbled out onto Lan Kwai Fong well fed, tipsy, and wholly satisfied. All in all, it was difficult to find any flaw in this restaurant. If you need to impress your partner in crime with an unbelievable meal, Porterhouse by Laris awaits your reservation.

pper Station Street has been the home to a fair few street parties, courtesy of Little Burro and its many creative allies. On both sides, quirky pubs and eateries are built like Lego alongside the cobbled pathway. So when Mitte, the Berlin-style bar and Italian eatery, or as they put it, an ‘Osteria Berlinese’ opened its doors, it couldn’t have meshed in more beautifully. One of the terms Mitte’s founding friends had to agree upon when signing the lease for Mitte was that they wouldn’t permit entry for ‘sailors and their escorts’. Such is the building they now occupy, an old colonial walk-up on the hills of Sheung Wan, its quaint design as aged as its legislation. But on ground level, there’s a neon blue ‘M’ sign pointing you into one of Hong Kong’s funkiest hangout spots. Although fairly small in footage, Mitte boasts a modern, open, and rustic atmosphere for residents of Sheung Wan and its surroundings to gather on the weekends and after work. We visited Mitte for a quick aperitivo (or three) and shared a selection of extremely fresh small plates courtesy of head chef Alessio Fortunato, whose cooking style is inspired by his hometown Salerno in south-western Italy. The octopus salad (on the menu as ‘Polpo’) hit the spot with its simplicity, joined with hearty chunks of burrata (mozzarella and cream) and strawberries in the ‘Buff’. Deep fried and oh-so-worth it was the ‘Pizzetta Fritta’, soft and doughy chunks of pizza flaked in parmesan. Our focus, however, was on the drinks. Using friends and family around the world, Mitte imports spirits rarely found on this side of the globe. Heading the cocktail menu is the ‘Spritz’, made sweet with Aperolesque Negroni “11”, or bitter with Campari-esque Negroni “Bitter” - both spirits imported directly from Italy. Nothing beats a spritz in the summer, and Mitte mixes them perfectly. But if you need something a little harder, the Negroni cocktail is a deliciously balanced mixture of bitter Negroni, Vermouth “Carpano Antica Formula” from southern Italy, and Boodles gin. delicious, a concoction of elderflower, mint, soda and prosecco. “Um, I don’t know…” Pause. Were there any particular songs he liked? Another pause. “I can’t think of just one right now.” This somewhat flimsy attitude makes cynicism easy, especially given the artist’s widespread popularity and appeal. But if as a fan of music you love Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, to name just two, then why wouldn’t you also be into a contemporary artist who sounds like them? And does the end not almost always justify the means? Bridges, who is now in his mid-twenties, has had a passionate interest in music and performance for as long as he can remember, but until recently it was modern R&B and hip-hop as opposed to classic blues and soul that piqued his interest. It was only after a friend noticed Bridge’s similarity with certain respected artists that something clicked. Bridges also heard Cooke’s classic ‘A Change is Gonna Come’ in Spike Lee’s film Malcolm X (1992). The rest, they say, is history. It’s not entirely clear whether he holds a refined political stance to go with the retro, Civil Rights-era sound, nor is it evident whether he’s playing a part or genuinely being himself – again, perhaps it’s a bit of both - but with a sound this good they could well be moot points. COMING HOME
Leon Bridges’ debut album lands the main review slot this month, and it’s a record that sounds good arguably because of, not despite, the fact that it’s an unashamed reference to a bygone era. Bridges, for want of a better phrase, is a ‘throwback to yesteryear’ - from his lyrics, vocal cadence, sartorial choices, vintage-looking Instagram account, and his use of antique musical equipment. And there’s little doubt as to the approach the young Texan has taken in terms of his look and his sound. The question that remains is whether he is channelling the past out of respect and reverence or simply trying to recreate it for the sake of being hip and retro. The answer may well be both. In a recent interview with the British newspaper The Guardian Bridges had this to say: “I became so fascinated with that sound I wanted to recreate it exactly.” Why? “It made me happy to make it identical. The simplicity just sounded so good.” Did it affect you emotionally?

After leaving Brighton Girl-Pop band The Pipettes, Gwenno Saunders went back to her hometown Cardiff to do what she wanted to do - creating Lo-Fi Electronic Pop in Welsh and Cornish. Gwenno's debut concept album Y Dydd Olaf takes inspiration from the 1976 dystopian sci-fi fiction of the same title by Welsh author Owain Owain. The retro-futurist creed in Gwenno’s light and electric music is always so intriguing – from the dreamy hit single 'Chwyldro' which salutes revolutionary ideas under the influence of Krautrock’s Motorik beats; to the delicate and gentle ballad melody of 'Calon Peiriant', which portrays the ups and downs of the era of robotics and mechanics to the glorious days of technological revolution. Fans of deep meditation and sonic transcendence, not to mention expertlycrafted soundscapes, need look no further than Californian Dan Abrams’ latest LP. Its evocative title lends it a certain existential quality, as well as acting as a nod to both quasi-sentient computer music and the discipline of sampling and borrowing. Bill Kouligas’ label PAN is once again in support, with the experimental producer beguiling and twisting at every turn. CURRENTS
Led by Australian musician Kevin Parker, Tame Impala (the name is now even used to describe Parker alone) released their third album Currents, which has so far met rave reviews. The evolution of Tame Impala is explicitly expressed in the album, from their 21st Century neo-psychedelic style to today’s electronic mixer-dominant dance music (Kevin reiterated that groove is the main element of Tame Impala music). The album has earned him some valuable compliments, but at the same time some fans think that this album is not up to par comparing to their past albums. Some fans just cannot accept the over-polished sound and modification the band made from their original psychedelic rock. The 8-minute single 'Let it Happen' is a beautifully made, groovy new epic track, something like a marriage between Air and Daft Punk. I wouldn’t miss out the term “Bizarre” when I am asked to describe Slim Twig, the incarnation of artist and producer from Toronto and independent music unit Max Turnbull. Slim Twig has his own music creation, compiling unique sampling from lo-fi electronic, garage rock, psychedelia and rockabilly, just like the madness you can taste from Frank Zappa. His fifth album Thank You for Stickin' with Twig showcases his ability to balance sample-based and live performances. 'Slippin Slidin' is one that dominates the electric rock dance floor; 'A Woman's Touch (It's No Coincidence)' is the dub version of Baroque pop with a cartoon touch; 'Roll Red Roll (Song For Steubenville)' is a fusion of fantasy and trance in one. Lastly, 'Cannabis’ is a raw and wild performance of glam rock, paying tribute to the '70s Serge Gainsbourg hit. 要我形容Slim

South Korean pop group The Wonder Girls fell off the map after their attempt at making it big in the States. During their hiatus, lead vocalist Sunye got married and left the group and so did tween member Sohee. After three years the girls are back with the much-needed return of popular former member Sunmi (who left in 2013 when she decided to get married and have a baby), and they sound stronger than ever with a cohesive '80s and '90s inspired album – seamlessly mixing hip hop, slow jam and electro. ‘One Black Night’ sounds like an updated version of Stacey Q’s ‘Two of Hearts’ and ‘Back’ is a clear nod to Salt-N-Pepa. The album conjures up the sweetest kind of musical nostalgia and makes the beats of the past accessible to the now. Leave it to the Wonder Girls to come back and cut the line to the top of K-pop girl groups, once again. 當年Wonder

G.E.M’s popularity has grown exponentially in the past year, having won the hearts of millions by joining the Mainland celebrity singing competition show, I am a Singer 2. She showed that she really has the vocal and musical chops of superstar. Her newest EP Heartbeat features three new singles written and composed by the 23-year-old. ‘Long Distance’ wrestles the emotional rollercoaster of modern love over a simple melody that comes off as a bit tepid. Things get darker and more interesting with ‘One-way Street’ with G.E.M juxtaposing her empowered and vulnerable self through her powerful vocals. This is the G.E.M that we like and want to hear more of, not Katy Perry wannabe tracks like ‘New Heartbeat’. The vibe comes off as contrived and the EDM/dance backing lacks substance. GETTING READY
The reigning King of Cantopop is back after two years with his muchanticipated Cantonese album and it’s well worth the wait. Chan has been aggressively touring for the past few years and Getting Ready is a soft rock reflection of his journey with the track ‘Life’s Marathon’ as his mantra for perseverance in the face of futility. The entire album has a relaxed, pensive vibe with Chan performing like he’s at your groovy neighbourhood dive bar. The few instances that take a shift are on ‘Beginning and End’ written by the long absent rock and roller Nicholas Tse. Chan gets dark here, but you’ll feel illuminated after listening to him wail a bit of truth. The other shift happens on ‘One Soul’s Monologue’, written by rising singer-songwriter AGA. The song has a Disney type of melody that’s glittery and sentimental, which is balanced by Chan’s husky voice and presented as a mature ballad. Perry的風格」 ，此曲讓整張迷你專輯的氛圍顯得有點做作，而電子舞曲的風格
則缺乏內涵。總體而言，這張迷你專輯未能真正確實反映G.E.M.的驕人天賦，所以我 們只能拭目以待，期望之後的完整大碟會更好。

Completely wireless, with a touchpad on the earcup, URBANEARS' wireless headphones are a great investment for the busy commuter. ith a simple design and convenient features, the Urbanears Plattan ADV Wireless headphones are the perfect option for men and women with busy schedules. They’re completely wireless, connecting to your phone or music device via Bluetooth, and they come with a swipe pad for easy use. They also come with a wire you can use instead of Bluetooth, or to connect a friend’s headphones into your music.

They come in ten colours, with a stylishly simple design. The headband is padded, and removable in case you need to wash it. The ear cups are sleek, made of leather and extremely comfortable. They don’t keep sound in too well but do manage to completely cancel out any surrounding sound - impressive for such compact headphones. For such a fair price, the sound is altogether very high quality. Indie music sounds slightly muddy; vocals cut through clearly, but they don’t pick up distorted guitars very well - maybe down to a slight weakness in picking up lower mids. However, they do impressively channel music with more focus on bass, so dance music sounds great. The best feature by far is the technology. There’s a touch-pad controller on the right ear cup; swipe forwards gently to skip to the next track, backwards to rewind, and tap to answer and hang up calls. This means no more digging through your bag or pockets to find your phone when you’re on the move. It feels awesomely futuristic. There were only two real flaws we found with this headphone. Firstly, they thump when you walk, so probably aren’t great exercise companions. Secondly, they’re a bit of a pain to set up; it took us about ten minutes to work out how to connect them via Bluetooth. (Press the button under the left ear cup to turn it on, and then hold down the button until a blue light flashes up.) It’s easy once you work it out but we wish they had an instruction leaflet or something. The Verdict: Once you connect the ADVs, you’re in for quite a treat. They’re light, and boast a nice, versatile sound. Comfortable, stylish, and subtly high-tech, the positives outweigh the negatives by far, and we’d definitely recommend them.

Cody Liu graduated from Designfirst College, Hong Kong Productivity Council, and has been working as an illustrator and concept artist for 12 years. His illustration works have been published in a number of media. He opened his first personal exhibition “CO-UTOPIA Illustration Exhibition” in 2007. His own characters have been exhibited in Art Idol and toys fairs in Hong Kong, China and Taiwan in 2007, 2008 and 2009. In 2010 he won ‘Best Illustration (Multi-Media) Award’ at the First Greater China Illustration Awards in 2010. Shortly after he became a member of the Hong Kong Society of Illustrators. His art pieces were chosen to be displayed at the third Art Idol figure competition 2012. In 2013, he joined the event ”We ♥ Pullip 10th Anniversary Party” with production teammates and made a custom figure to be donated for earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan. Last year, we organized ‘Hong Kong Blender’, an event aimed at stepping up the game of the local electronic scene. Featuring all local electronic musicians with their original compositions, and DJs’ collaborations with live musicians, it was a memorable and eclectic night. This year, at the very end of Summer, we present you, “Hong Kong Blender2”. This time we aim even higher, bringing in 4 live acts and 2 DJ/ musician combos, covering different genres and styles, ranging from hip hop to EDM. Here’s a round up of the acts you’ll catch on the night:

You see hipsters with full-sleeve tattoos, super cool haircuts and faces with attitude everywhere. The trend is all about ‘50’s Rockabilly Style nowadays and because of that, there are more and more barbershops opening in Hong Kong. Last month, Edwin Watch brought in one of the world’s most famous barbershops, Crows Nest, to open their first ever overseas store at Haven Street in Causeway Bay, directly importing authentic barbershop culture to Hong Kong. Different to a regular hair salon, barbershops only do two things for customers, cuts and shaves, but similar to a skate shop, they’re also a spot for people to hangout, so most of the barbers are friends with their customers - you can always hear laughs and rumors from inside barbershops. Crows Nest is recognized as one of the best
barbershops and landmarks in Canada because of the quirky and talented owner and barber, Jon Roth. A lot of people don’t understand what it means to be a professional skateboarder. It’s easiest to understand how hard it is to make it by using this example: let’s say there are 20 million people playing basketball, and there are only 30 teams in the NBA. Each team can have max. 15 rosters, so there are only 450 spots to become a professional NBA player, which is 450 out of 20 million. Professional skateboarders have the same amount in ratio - they are one in a million. But because he loved barbershop culture so much, 26-year-old Jon Roth gave up his professional snowboarding career in 2008, started learning from his idol Roger Janes and became a barber. Two years later, he opened his own barbershop, Crows Nest, located in Kensington, Toronto.
The start of his success was partly down to his influence as a professional snowboarder, but Jon Roth treated all his barbers and customers like family, keeping the best vibes in the shop and making sure they were all satisfied when they left the shop. Eventually, his fans became friends. Crows Nest soon became the spot for friends to hangout at every month. Also, all the unique decorations in the shop - the hanging skateboards, the checkerboard floor, the glass bottle cokes - made Crows Nest become not just a spot but one of the best spots in Toronto. Canadian men’s fashion magazine SHAPE even ranked Crows Nest as a must-go barbershop in Toronto. So it’s much to our delight that Edwin Watch Store has brought it over to Hong Kong. They even invited Jon Roth to Hong Kong as a guest barber during their opening. in the handbag - especially to keep you warm in heavy air conditioning. But have you ever thought to wear it differently, or wear it in more places than just cold indoors? One of my very own styling tips is spending some time in front of the mirror and trying on all the possible ways to mix and match. Eventually you’ll find something that looks great. Colourful print is always the eyecatching point of your look. At this stage, I styled the scarf in 3 different ways, as a turban, a waist band and an open back floating top by knotting two scarves. I paired them

with monochrome items such as black pants, white chopped top or a black dress. My another tips of styling those colourful patterned scarves is to separate them by warm colours and cool colours. Even if they’re covered in different patterns, putting the same colour type together always looks better and smoother. On the other hand, it is also my suggestion to make a little contrast between the harmonic combination, such as the waist band in the picture. As well as women’s accessories, there are a lot of men’s scarves in the market. The designs and styles tend to be more settled.
