Buckle in! Autumn’s got some aces up its sleeve. This month we’ve been eyeing up the long-haired EDM giant, Skrillex, who is set to headline Don’t Let Daddy Know at the Expo on the 30th, and every Ultra event around Asia until then. In our A-Side this month we question why as a rocker, he turned to EDM (P16). Our B-Side this month is the phenomenal Tuxedo, aka Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One, whom we caught for questioning after their show at Summer Sonic, and ahead of their funk fest at Ovolo Southside on the 11th (P20). This month is particularly busy, so be sure to flip through our Fast Forward so you don’t miss out on the best parties and shows (P4). The announcement that formative Dutch DJ Tiësto is flying into Macau has caused quite a stir. onny Moore, better known as Skrillex, cites rock music as his muse. Between 2004 and 2007, he was the piercedlip frontman of EMI-signed screamo band From First To Last; nowadays he’s seen bounding on speakers in front of tens of thousands of people. But the style of music that maintains his sumptuous Los Angeles lifestyle today - when he’s not 40,000ft above ground jetting over to his next show - contradicts rock music to its core. But where does this contradiction come from? How, if at all, has he transferred his musical fundamentals into the quasi8-bit drops heard roaring from the stages at giant festivals? And how did a thoroughbred ‘emo’, who grew up on The Doors, become, arguably, the most famous EDM DJ in the world? There have been comparisons to fundamental forms of music in EDM’s

technicality, though rarely to rock music. However much music purists might like to shoot down the idea, there is some truth in its comparison to classical composition. It’s straightforward enough to structure a basic EDM track: you need drops, build-ups, an intro and a break down. With this formula and some basic production skills you can create a track within hours. A composer in the 18th century would similarly set out to compose a piece with a certain form in mind - perhaps a sonata, or a symphony. The EDM producers, who make an often stigmatised fortune, have somehow sculpted the over-used formula into something that sets them apart from the rest. Similarly, only a proportionate few Classical composers managed to craft their structural skeleton into something of widespread intrigue. It’s farfetched

to say that a popular EDM track is as memorable as Beethoven’s 5th, but it’s a sympathisable comparison. Contrastingly, it’s difficult to think of any technical similarities between EDM and the more traditional rock music - (i.e., the guitar driven music of Led Zeppelin, The Doors or Metallica) - and a thoroughbred rock enthusiast would spit at the thought of trying. However, the live shows, which are half of EDM’s appeal, can be very much compared. To some extent, the aggression in Skrillex’s music reflects his inner screamo, and the energy of the crowd at an EDM festival must provoke the same, if not a more intense, rush of adrenaline for the performer than at a metal gig. Though where rock music has fundamentals in rebellion and emotional strife, EDM is largely void of heartfelt matter. Rather, it has a specific role to play. Essentially,

MAYBE IT WAS THE DYNAMISM AND HYSTERIA OF DUBSTEP THAT FILLED THE CHASM BETWEEN HIS ROCK MUSIC AND DANCE MUSIC an EDM producer aims to create something that succeeds in triggering a certain feeling in the listener through its obligatory pace and energy. In that rock music relies more on instrumental skill and songwriting, this is where the clashes between both cultures arise. Once of the clashes lies partly in the fact that the ever-growing popularity of EDM threatens to replace live musicians. In RE:GENERATION, a documentary by the Grammys, The Doors’ drummer John Densmore walks dubiously into Skrillex’s studio before meeting him for the first time. “It is worrisome to me,” he says, “that cultures prefer dancing to a machine [than to live music].” To the old-school DJs, it’s more a problem that EDM misrepresents and devalues traditional dance music culture. British house and techno producer Carl Cox, one of the pioneers of the UK’s ‘80s dance movement, said to Dancing Astronaut last year: “Some of these people have no clue why they are standing in front of these DJs in the first place.” In his opinion, EDM is a moneymaking construct. Why, then, did a musically proficient and industrially aware Sonny Moore take such a vast leap from screamo to Skrillex? In the same Grammy documentary, he says that originally, “[production] was just

something I liked to do.” In his youth, Moore always had a soft spot for dance music. Bullied out of school at the age of 14, his later teenage years would be spent homeschooled, regularly attending punk gigs - or whenever possible, electro raves. After a successful run with From First To Last, he launched a solo career through Myspace. The ‘Sonny Moore’ releases balanced hardcore rock vocals with light drum machines and synths. At this point he clearly found an opportunity to test out his bedroom production on the public; and a positive response triggered a dedication to the style that, two years later, would be signed to Deadmau5’s label Mau5trap. His production was at the forefront of the dubstep movement for a long while: maybe it was the dynamism and hysteria in the form that filled the chasm between dance music and rock for him. 'Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites', the title track of his second E.P., was the first track to define his knack for original production (the track now has over 200 million YouTube views and won him one of his six Grammys in 2012 for Best Dance Recording). But as the ‘EDM’ culture popularised, his music became more and more, in Aphex Twin’s words to Groove Magazine, “poppy”. His release this year with Diplo, Skrillex

I hear what he hears.” Ultimately, EDM is just a part of popular culture, and Skrillex unashamedly rides its waves. Though he stands a cut above the rest because he has proven talent in music and entertainment as well as technology. EDM music provides a transcendent form of entertainment to the thousands who flock to its festivals - whether or not they know exactly why. One day it might deteriorate, in which case producers without a musical background are vulnerable to being left empty handed. But if one thing’s for sure, Skrillex ain’t gonna be the one crying about it.

unk, at its rawest, is a form of music of which we don’t get to hear too much nowadays. With a vanguard of drums and electric bass, brought to life with brass interjections and sugarplum keys, funk is the forgotten fairy godmother of dance music. Mayer Hawthorne (né Andrew Mayer Cohen) and Jake One (Jacob Dutton) have created one of the purest funk acts of the year; and it all began as a casual mixtape exchange. Mayer and Jake both have a long cultivated career in music - but neither had ever explored funk music past their personal record collections. Jake One is an established hip hop producer based in Seattle. Once part of 50 Cent’s G-Unit production team, he’s worked alongside almost all the biggest names in hip hop - including Snoop Dogg, De La Soul, Ghostface Killah, Skillz, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar - the list goes on, seemingly forever. Mayer, on the other hand, is a Grammy-nominated soul songwriter, branching from time to time into hip hop under the moniker Haircut. Introduced by mutual friends, the pair found common ground in old-school disco and funk music, began swapping mixtapes in 2006, and eventually decided to get together and try their hand at delving into the genres creatively. Jake explains, “I think we were just trying to do something cool that

”I WASN’T SURE HOW MY FANS WOULD REACT [TO TUXEDO]. YOU CAN NEVER PREDICT WHAT PEOPLE ARE GOING TO ROCK WITH.” - MAYER HAWTHORNE Insofar as Tuxedo’s success is concerned, there’s no doubt their respective careers in music upped the odds. But according to the duo, they weren’t sure if their fans would love or hate the idea of Tuxedo. Jake confesses, “I think it made our fans curious to hear what we had come up with. I wasn’t sure how it would be received by the people who follow me because it’s so different.” Mayer adds, “It definitely helps we had existing fans, but this Tuxedo album is very different for both of us.” He continues, “You can never predict what people are going to rock with. You just have to make what you love and hope for the best.” Aside from old-school influences, Hawthorne cites Bruno Mars as one of the only contemporary artists to have had an effect on Tuxedo, at least, in his words, “as far as the showmanship” is concerned. “We recently got to see Zapp Band perform though, and no current group is on that level. It’s like an 8 ring circus. Super inspiring!” (Zapp was a pioneering electro-funk band in the ‘70s from Ohio, who Jake and Mayer have always cited as one of their influences.) Live, Tuxedo emits an addictive energy, with band members in tuxedos and backing singers swaying their glitz-adorned hips. At the front, Mayer swings the microphone cable in his fingers as Jake lays down synths and keyboards to his left. It’s the flashy entertainment once aired

on black and white television; the kind of performance you’d tweak your TV antennae back and forth for, until you could make out the white teeth of each performer, singing live to their roaring studio audience. That being said, Tuxedo is as much a DJ outfit as a live band. Mayer again: “Most people don’t know that we were both DJs before we started making our own music. Our DJ sets are different from anything you’ve seen. It’s really a party. Usually I drink a bit too much cognac and start singing karaoke over every song.” Sounds like he’s got the right idea. It’s an unfortunate truth that shows in Asia tend suffer from a lack of energy in the crowd, but by now we’re all well aware of the consistent success of Fresh Off The Boat shows - and with a sound like Tuxedo’s, the dance floor’s going to be packed. Plus, Mayer and Jake are fresh out of their performance at Summer Sonic Festival in Osaka and Chiba. Jake tells us, “It was amazing. Japan had shown us love in April when we did a DJ gig but [Summer Sonic] was a whole different level.” Mayer cuts in, “It was insane! I still can’t believe how many people knew our songs.” On his journey westwards, he adds, “This will be my first time in China; so I’m really excited about going to Hong Kong and Shanghai!” Catch Tuxedo for the first time in Hong Kong at Ovolo Southside on the 11th. Amir Amor, Kesi Dryden, DJ Locksmith and Thomas Jules, released their first studio album. Despite expectations, Home was a record full of surprises. There was a preconception when Rudimental released ‘Not Giving In’ the heartfelt, brass-propped anthem about the difficulties of life - that the record would lack in gems and herald that track as its one masterpiece. Instead, the album introduced to the world some of the UK’s now preeminent vocal superstars, from John Newman and Ella Eyre to Grammy-nominated singer MNEK. The album also strayed from the expected full hour of drum and bass. In it were restrained, deep house tracks like ‘Spoons’ with MNEK. It dipped into late-night soul music in ‘Hide’ with Sinead Harnett, and stadium quality, honey-dipped ballads like ‘Free’ with Emili Sandé. From the album we took ‘Feel The Love’ with John Newman and ‘Waiting All Night’ with Ella Eyre as two more of the top, most prolific dance tracks of the past five years. With the release of Home, drum and bass became an approachable genre to mainstream ears. So, with second album We The Generation set for release in the next few weeks, what else will they bring to

the table? Julie Chu of Warner Music took our interview questions over to London, where Amir and Kesi let us in on what’s changed since Home. Amir begins, “I think our albums are a good snapshot of where we are at the time that we make it, and We The Generation is a representation of where we’ve been since the moment we finished Home, up until now. It’s basically the last three years of touring and the cultures we’ve learned about, combined with the drum and bass, house, grime and soulful music we grew up with. [In that way] I’d say it’s definitely along the same lines as the first album.” Asked about new musical influences since Home, Amir continues: “There’s a lot more funk and soul in this album. We ended up working with George Clinton from Parliament Funkadelic. We worked with Donald Fagen from Steely Dan, and even went to Jamaica for a while and recorded some more reggae influenced things.” Kesi chips in, “The album has a strong Rudimental sound, but with more of these soulful things coming out of it.” By ‘soulful things’, Kesi means strong, passionate vocal tracks. As Hong Kong’s nightlife continues to rapidly expand, Dean and his V Group consultancy have been busier than ever before. In one month alone, V Group handles several of the most widely attended parties in H.K. A few of the recent events they have supported include the Rewind parties, Botellón, the Outlook Festival Launch Party, Reloop Rooftop, BOOM Magazine’s Indie Attitude party, and the PUSH event featuring M.A.N.D.Y. Their packed schedule of events takes them from the beaches of Shek O to the rooftops of Causeway Bay, and deep into New Territories sometimes all in one day! Planning BOOM Magazine’s Indie Attitude party featuring Free The Robots, Dean insisted that we use a superior lighting set-up, despite having to eat the cost himself. His technical know-how and high standards are rare in business these days, and a true standout in Hong Kong. Whether it’s a rooftop party, a beachside bash, or an informal gathering of a thousand people in an amphitheater next to Lan Kwai Fong, he’s helped many a promoter realize their dreams, and turned masses of stressed out HKers into a sea of smiling, dancing people.

The Singapore Grand Prix was established in 1961, originally called the Orient Year Grand Prix, then the Malaysian Grand Prix in 1962. In 1965, it was renamed the Singapore Grand Prix after Singapore became an independent republic, but was discontinued in 1967 after a series of fatal accidents in the races on the Thomson Road circuit. In 2007, it returned in full glory at the newly renovated Marina Bay Sands Circuit, laying host to the first ever F1 night race, and the first ever Formula 1 venue in Asia. The Circuit Park is open from 3pm-12:30am each day of the weekend. There are nine entrance gates, including wheelchair accessible entrances. rom the same people who brought us the stylish Bibo on Hollywood Road, TRi is traditional Balinese cuisine, designed in the style of a gourmet restaurant on the Indonesian island. With a beach view over Repulse Bay, TRi sits on the third floor of The Pulse, boasting an airy expanse of pretty deco and spa-like scents. There’s plenty of table seating, but a true TRi experience involves booking one of the giant wicker pods, accessible via stepping stones across a bubbling stream of water. The low table is a giant slab of stone, held up by chiselled tree stumps. The seating is a struggle for taller guests - it’s designed for reclining and sitting cross-legged, but the whole experience is unique, even for Hong Kong. We went on a Saturday, for their fairly quiet second brunch sitting at 1pm. A spread of starters kicks the meal off nicely (alongside a few glasses of champagne if you’re brunching, of course). A highlight was the sugared sweetcorn with coconut yoghurt, tasting strangely similar to sweet popcorn at the movies. Another highlight was the fresh tomato and chilli salad, and a plate of wonderfully cooked octopus. The deep fried curry chicken pancakes were delicious, but a little heavy before the meaty mains.

The Wagyu beef cheek rendang could have been spicier. Indonesians used to use rendang to preserve their meat, and traditionally it should taste better the longer it sits postcooking. TRi’s, although tasty, didn’t seem to have been given enough time to soak in the flavours, so didn’t quite unfold in layers of flavour like a rendang in Bali would. However, the meat (if, maybe, a little too fatty for some) had just the right melt-in-themouth consistency. An essential dish at TRi is the Jimbaran BBQ pork ribs, the meat of which falls of the bone with the lightest touch of the giant gold serving fork alongside which it’s presented. The outsides are expertly charred, and the serving size is generous. Whether you’re sharing them or not, the ribs fill you up and leave a glorious, sweet aftertaste. TRi’s ambience is delicate, with nods to Indonesian spirituality that work exceedingly well. It feels like a spa getaway on the edge of Bali, with a range of piquant and colourful dishes, the relaxing sound of trickling water in the pebbled indoor streams, and stellar service. No one can complain about being overfed, but we warn you: take your meal slowly to ensure you savour every course served. Fancy a trip to Bali but can’t find time? TRi will satisfy your craving.

Mahalo Tiki Lounge

A Breath of Fresh Air

mongst all these skyscrapers, life on the island can sometimes feel quite oppressive. After a long day, stepping out on the 29th floor of the QRE Plaza into Mahalo Tiki Lounge is almost surreal. An offshoot of Wellington Street hangout spot Honi Honi, Mahalo opened at the beginning of July to rave reactions. It’s a breath of fresh air from the pollution at ground level; friendly, relaxed, and exquisitely designed. The lounge is adorned with a similar bar setup to Honi Honi, crafted with bamboo and organised in a neat spread of bottles (from all corners of the globe, of course - these are the same guys who hosted the HK Rum Fest, after all). The concept was to herald the US’ fashionable tiki bars of the ‘70s and ‘80s in a sophisticated way, and they’ve certainly succeeded. Old Wan Chai boasts a number of quirky watering holes, but Mahalo is by far the prettiest. The smoking area is about three times the size and seating capacity of Honi Honi’s, lined with giant alocasia plants and sprinkles of flowers. By its warm

candlelight, Mahalo’s early evening cocktail sessions are reminiscent of sitting by the beach on a tropical island after a day in the sun. The tropical vibe clashes stunningly with the spectacular westward view towards the Bank of China, and the passageway of skyscrapers leading up to and beyond it. The menu is bound in the style of an aged treasure map, which unfolds in a leather sleeve. Drink choices are numerous, with classics imported directly from Honi Honi - like the Mahalo Collins (recognised by most of you as the Honi Honi Collins), a refreshing take on the Tom Collins, infused with lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves and elderflower syrup. A quirky highlight on the menu is the Kaizoku, an innovative blend of wasabi, yuzu paste, coriander, fruit juices and New Grove Oak Aged Rum from Mauritius.

Rising from Buffalo, New York, only two main members remain in Mercury Rev, namely Jonathan Donahue and Grasshopper. They spent the last 2 years producing their brand new album The Light In You, released no less than 7 years after the previous work Snowflake Midnight. In my mind, they are still a psychedelia band as their songs have always been so refined and surreal. The dream-pop track 'The Queen of Swans' is almost ethereal; 'Amelie' expresses sorrow from the past; 'Central Park East' demonstrates the feeling of loneliness and 'Autumn’s In the Air' is like a movie. 'Emotional Free Fall' has a sound as vivid as a mythical journey, though the lively psych-pop track 'Sunflower' must be the highlight of the record. All in all, a great album. 跟前作專輯《Snowflake

It's been hard to ignore the math-rock of Oxford indie-rock band Foals since the release of 2013 album Holy Fire. In 2015, under the leadership of Yannis Philippakis, they've stepped into their most mature stage yet. With James Ford at the helm of its production, new album What Went Down has concretised the band's charismatic sound, and no doubt triggered their longawaited recognition as one of the UK's best rock bands. In title track 'What Went Down', Yannis’ passionate vocals are supported by a dazed electric organ. and a galloping, Krautrock-esque Motirik rhythm. Last year at Clockenflap, not only did we enjoy the live performance by the trio synth-pop Band Chvrches from Glasgow in Scotland, but we also began to think about what their new projects might be. Although they kept us guessing and told nothing concrete on stage, I still looked forward to the band’s second album. As the latest work following The Bones of What You Believe after two years, there were no huge breakthroughs in the second album Every Open Eye - but the group's synth-pop tracks are unfailingly pleasant. 'Never Ending Circles' is a catchy song about heartbreak. 'Leave a Trace' stretches slightly into R&B territory, and 'Make Them Gold' recalls '80s pop. The British producer’s 2008 LP has been re-released and re-mastered, this time featuring cover art by Konx-om-Pax. This may seem premature after just seven years, but given the huge critical and commercial success of last year’s Reality Testing it’s a timely reminder of where Lone started out, with sounds that veered towards the ambient and psychedelic as well as boom-bap hiphop of the '90s. Most of the tracks here come in under three minutes before heading elsewhere.

Although Taiwanese shoegaze act Doodle's previous work had already hinted at just how heavy they could sound, the newest EP hits you right away with some dark, full-on shoegaze reminiscent of a True Widow record. From opening track 'Dark Fetish' to the more uplifting 'Only Dreaming', the sludginess permeates the record. Much like any other variation of shoegaze, the walls of sound are best enjoyed with your headphones turned up very, very loud.

I am a French American Artist living in Hong Kong. I thrill on bringing the rough environment of the street into the comfortable environment of your home. 我是一個旅居香港的美藉法國藝術家。最令

我興奮的事就是將粗獷的街頭景象融入到舒適的家庭環境當中。

This is one of my favorite art piece as it represents SKRILLEX one of the greatest DJ of our time. I wanted to show distinctive facial features and accessories that clearly defines Skrillex (shaved side, glasses, earing, long hair…), while portraying him being receptive to his own music, closing his eyes and enjoying is creation. It is a 40cm x 40cm concrete block – Mix Media – Airbrush. 這是我最喜歡的藝術作品之一，因為它的主角是SKRILLEX，我們這個時代最偉大的DJ之一。

After living in San Diego, how have you found America has influenced your art, if at all? Did Los Angeles culture influence you at all? The US influenced me tremendously in my art. There are so many talented artists in LA and New York. I would drive around LA in my 20s during the weekend just to discover new street art on the wall of the city. It would get me so amp’ed. Los Angeles for me was an amazing canvas that fueled my creativity from the first day I stepped in the city. Your work is clearly very much inspired by city life and street art. Have you ever done street art yourself? Do you ever want to attempt it? Yes, I used to do it when I was younger. But after a while I realised that I would rather work from my studio. I thought it would be better to be able to take my time and work more on details. I am very attracted by street life and street art; I could spend hours walking around a city contemplating the concrete walls and the street art on them.

Which material do you have most fun working with? I like to combine different techniques, but mostly I enjoy using spray paint, airbrush, acrylic, and most importantly, concrete. Why do you use concrete as a canvas? How do you create the canvases exactly? For me, building a canvas made of concrete is as an enjoyable process as painting on it. I build and sculpt every single canvas. Each art piece are made of a unique, one of a kind, hand made concrete canvas. What’s been the most fascinating and inspiring moment of the past year for you? I would say moving to Hong Kong. I was born in France and spent all my life there in the French Alps before I decided to move to San Diego in California. Over the last 15 years, I traveled extensively, and visited a lot of countries around the world. I spent a lot of hours on trains, buses, planes, and in cars. Whenever I looked out of the window, I was always captivated

How did these travels inspire your art exactly? I started paying more attention to the street art in each culture, and became more and more fasinated by it. I felt that I was connecting with the locals. I could feel their emotions, their frustration, their joy, and their jokes through the messages they had left on the walls. I became quite obsessed by the walls and the concrete. I think I became more interested in the texture of the surface than the artwork itself. Hong Kong has a growing street art culture, but what’s your opinion on it? How does it inspire you? Hong Kong has so much concrete that every time I walk down the street I become excited, because it inspires me to create new street-inspired art. 美國如何影響你的藝術創作？

美國對我的藝術創作影響極大。在洛杉磯和紐約有很多有才華的藝術家。在我二十多歲時，我會在週末期間駕車於洛杉磯四

我喜歡結合不同的技術。但我比較常用的有噴漆、噴筆、亞加力和混凝土。對我來說，在混凝土上作畫，光是畫畫就已經讓人心情愉快。

每一幅畫都由我親自起草和精雕細琢。每一件藝術作品是獨特的、獨一無二、手工製作的混凝土油畫。

對你來說，過去的一年中那個激發了你創作的有趣時刻是什麼？

我會說是移居香港的時候。

我生於法國，在決定搬到加州聖迭戈前一直住在法國阿爾卑斯山區。在過去的十五年裡，我經常在世界各地旅行，到過很多不同國家。我在火車、巴士、汽車、飛

機之上花了不少時間，每當從窗戶外望，碰上街頭藝術，總是讓我著迷。我開始更

加關注那些街頭藝術，並變得越來越痴迷，因為我覺得我像是和當地的人們有了連繫。通過留在牆壁上的訊息，我能感覺到他們的情緒、挫折、喜悅、玩笑。我喜歡牆壁、混凝土、物料的表面質感更多於藝術本身。

在香港有這麼多的混凝土，當每一天我

As early as 1998, I had begun buying the unofficial live performance CDs of Kraftwerk, starting with the album named Concert Classics, which was recorded in 1975. I realised there was a vinyl record for the album, which I collected soon after. The album Autobahn Tour was actually the Japanese version of Concert Classics, and they were published in the same year. The two albums shared the same live recording, but the black box packaging of Autobahn Tour is more beautiful to me. There’s an interesting section on this live recording. Here’s her report: “First things first: It should be known that I am in no way close to being a tech geek. So when it comes

to selecting gear for creating music or playing live, I would need something that is user friendly, without being limiting in features. The Boss RC 505 Loop Station was what I was looking for. Firstly, on first power up, green and red lights on the buttons flare up as if it were a rave (instant thumbs up). It was also fairly easy to use without reading the instruction manual beforehand. It may be small in size, but it can hande five independently controlled channels at the same time, each with their own record/play/overdub button. Hold the stop button for two seconds, and it undoes your last recorded loop. The hardware comes with a wide variety of effects to enhance performance. This is definitely designed to gear towards vocalists or beatboxers more than guitarists as it requires hands

好，言歸正傳，今次我們試玩了一台

BOSS的RC505 Looper。特別之處乃Boss

似乎終於醒覺到世界上除了結他手以

及唱作人以外，Looper還有別的市場需求。是以機器上多了很多DESKTOP

的操控。我們也想不到除了找Gravity Alterstra的Janni以外，我們還可以找誰來試玩這個新一代Looper呢？以下是她的報告；

If You Don’t Know Now You Know Never Been Done By: Pro B Lam problam

Never Been Done (NBD) is a special term in the skateboarding world. It means you have to do something new, and achieve something different. It’s the spirit of skateboarding. But it’s been almost 40 years since people began skateboarding, so pretty much all of the tricks we can physically do have been done, so when we talk about NBD nowadays, it mostly refers to combo tricks, or tricks using different spots on the board. In this issue, I’m going to let you know a skateboard legend that created a lot of tricks during the 70s and 80s. Elguerial is his signature move; in 1979 and 1980 Gold Cup Series of Skateboarding he became Champion: at 53 years old, Mr. Eddie “El Gato“ Elguera. There wasn’t much street skateboarding during the ‘80s until Powell Peralta release their ‘Public Domain’ video. The street skateboarding by Ray Barbee and the Rubber Boys changed the whole scene, and Eric Koston was one of the guys who brought street skateboarding to another level in the ‘90s. The way that he popped his tricks, his trick selection in different spots and the creativity he brought into the skateboarding world is different to anything else, so there’s a lot of people who would describe Eric Koston as the Michael Jordan of the skateboarding industry. It was Eddie Elguera who found this superstar, and turned him into what he is today. Back then,

and the skateboarding scene would be completely different. Although Eddie turns 53 this year, he continues to skate. He cooperated with Vans and World Cup Skateboarding to start a competition last year called “The El Gato Classic”. Unlike any other competition, it doesn’t involve pro competitions, just amateur and legend games because Eddie strongly believes that if skateboarding honours the past and champions the future, skateboarding will never die. Eric Koston lived two blocks behind Eddie Elguera, so when Eric started skateboarding, Eric always visited the mini ramps that Eddie had built in his home. They started to skate together, and when Eddie started going to skateboarding camps over the summer, Eric was hired as his assistant. Before long, Eddie realised Eric’s true potential. When Eddie’s sponsor H-Street started a skate tour, Eddie brought Eric with him and tried to make him skate in the demo and earn sponsorship from H-Street. Finally H-Street turned Eric Koston pro, but unfortunately he soon switched to Girl Skateboard with H-Street teammate Mike Carroll. In the famous YouTube skate show Epicly Later’d Eric states that really appreciates everything that Eddie did for him. On the Screen Escobar : Paradise Lost By: Colm Gardner

cheesy dialogue and “cute” moments which, naturally, stand out against the backdrop of the harsh realities put forth by Escobar’s reign, which the film does such a good job portraying. Being in both the romantic and thriller genres will ultimately limit its audience to those who enjoy both simultaneously. As someone who enjoys crime films with nail-bitingly intense scenes, I found that its romantic aspect really turned me off.

22 years ago, the most infamous Colombian druglord of all time was shot dead atop a Mendellin rooftop after a 20 minute shootout with Colombian security forces. Yet today, the concern over the rise and fall of the world’s wealthiest criminal has found a new rise in popularity. Escobar: Paradise Lost, starring Benicio Del Toro as the enigmatic kingpin, showcases the life led by Escobar prior to his arrest in 1991, complete with all the intensity and brutality that entails. The film plays out as a unique blend of romance and thriller as a young Canadian surfer marries the niece of Escobar (played, respectively, by Josh Hutcherson & Claudia Traisac) and soon finds himself embroiled in the chaos of Escobar’s downfall. The film’s strengths and weaknesses lie within each name on either side of the title on its poster. Del

Paradise Lost comes full circle with a frustratingly ambiguous ending that leads the viewer to believe that the quickly perishing intensity throughout the film amounts to absolutely nothing but fully-fledged disappointment. Unfortunately for director Di Stefano, the actually very enjoyable highs of this film are suffocated by its very tangible pitfalls.

Toro provides a deeply arching biopic of the kingpin, encapsulating both the charming, charismatic demeanour of “El Patron” as well as his antithetical brutality and sociopathic tendencies as one would expect from the world’s most prolific cocaine dealer. 浪漫的部分是由同樣迷人的

Traisac來演出，她往往都在俗氣的對話

和「可愛」的時刻出現，並與Escobar背景下、嚴酷的現實中形成強烈對比，電影

都把這些細節細膩地勾畫出來，也做得非常出色。

也許，這個就是重點，但這並不一定

會帶來良好的觀賞效果。

結合浪漫和驚悚元素的電影最終通

常只會能夠迎合一部分的觀眾，就好像當我傾向於享受犯罪片激烈場面帶來

的刺激的時候，我就會覺得浪漫劇情讓我摸不著頭腦。我想相反的情況也會是如此。

《失樂園》（Paradise

Lost）有一個

令人沮喪、含糊不清的結局，導致觀眾認

為整部影片結尾草草了事，讓觀眾完全失望，更沒有讓犯罪電影愛好者得到一絲的滿足。

對導演Di Stefano而言，可惜的是電

影裡拍的非常過癮的高潮點就這樣被確鑿的弊處蓋過了。
