Cuyuna Rolling Hills Golf Course has a lot to be proud of

As we shut the door on the first century of Cuyuna Country Club/ Cuyuna Rolling Hills, we start on our second century and 11th year as Cuyuna Rolling Hills golf course. We have a lot to be proud of as an organization as our rounds have doubled in the last 10 years. Not only have our rounds doubled but so have the tournaments we host, our memberships continue to climb and our list of “regulars” has certainly grown.

We think our key to success has been a friendly and welcoming staff, affordable rates for memberships and every day greens fees as well as our course continuing to be in great shape, regardless of what mother nature throws at us. Being located less than 20 minutes away from the Brainerd lakes area, we feel we are adding ourselves to the list of must play courses in the area. We give you the resort quality

golf without the resort pricing.

Also not far from us is the Cuyuna State Recreation Area where we have seen more and more bikes on the back of vehicles as they pull into our driveway. The popularity of the Cuyuna Lakes area has boomed incredibly, you can easily spend a weekend shredding the red at the trails in the morning and then come play some of the best greens in the state.

If you have yet to play us, the front nine is a little more open, allowing a driver on almost every hole. There is only one par 3 on the front, one par 5 and seven par 4s. Once you get to the back nine, you see the true beauty of our rolling terrain cut through the trees. Unlike our front nine, a driver might not always be the best club off the tee box but you know your game better than us. The back nine

also offers a more traditional, two par 3s and two par 5s. This means you will have five par 4s to complete 18 holes and a par 72 championship style course. It offers golfers of all skill levels different challenges and will have you coming back for more.

One of the most common things we hear from people that stop in is, “We’ve driven by this course plenty of times and never stopped but we sure are glad we did!” If you find yourself being one of those people that have driven by for years, give us a try. Jackson ready for new challenge at Whitefish

PEQUOT LAKES — There is a changing of the guard at Whitefish Golf Club.

After 28 years of running the business at Whitefish, Steve Bengston retired at the end of March.

“After 34 years in the golf business, I’m moving into a different phase of my life,” Bengston said. “Whitefish is such a great place, so it was tough. I have built a relationship in this area and it wasn’t something I thought of overnight. It’s been a plan for a while and it just came to a point where it’s time.”

It’s the relationships with the Whitefish members and shareholders Bengston will miss the most.

“This is a unique area,” he said. “It still has that energy of a resort destination market and there are still a lot of visitors and people that come here to recreate. There’s an energy here at all the golf

courses up here that is optimistic and positive no matter where you go. That’s why all the other pros and people around here have been here a long time.”

His replacement is 27-year-old Logan Jackson, who will serve as both general manager and head pro at Whitefish moving forward.

“I don’t think I’ve learned enough from him. I need to know 28 years’ worth and that’s a lifetime for me. I’ve taken everything I can from him while he’s still here.

“This is a position that really fits someone like me,” Jackson said. “I’m local and I don’t really plan on going anywhere. I want to stay in the Brainerd area, so that was really my biggest trigger to look here.”

Jackson is no stranger to the lakes area golf scene having previously worked at Cragun’s Legacy Courses and Grand View Lodge.

“I didn’t think I was headed anywhere else,” Jackson said. “Of course you are always looking and Steve’s been here for 28 years, so it was very intriguing to see what that career looks like. I’m going to rely a lot on my team at Cragun’s. I saw a lot of changes there over the years that were good and bad. I learned about golf course renovation and how you can reroute your course and keep the place alive.”

Moving to Whitefish, Jackson won’t have a resort tied to his golf course like his other employers.

“I loved every minute being at Cragun’s and Grand View, but with Whitefish being shareholder-owned the member relationship is really a big piece here,” Jackson said. “It’s just a golf course and I get to be a golf pro and I don’t have to do anything with a resort. It’s nothing against the resorts, but they are just very big. I think we can be more intimate and more customer focused. We’ve got a rich history built by the shareholders who still own this golf course and we want to continue that same friendly, welcoming, playable golf course that is designed for everyone.”

Jackson’s knowledge and experience of the Brainerd market was one of the main reasons Bengston picked him to be his successor.

“He’s a good local guy with knowledge of the market,” Bengston said. “Having been at Grand View and Cragun’s, there’s a strong sense of what happens in the area with him.”

Having the title as a general manager is a huge leap for Jackson. He also hopes to get back into giving lessons as a head professional.

“That’s a huge new role for me,” Jackson said. “I oversee everyone, which I’ve definitely had staff report to me in the past, but never a superintendent

and never food and beverage managers. I also oversee a lot more on the financials and those little decisions that have a big impact on our club. There’s also a board of directors here, which I’m not used to reporting to a board and understanding their vision and how to implement that because our board is very hands-on. It’s really exciting, but also a little scary.

“I plan to restart my golf school and I will be bringing back junior golf through Pequot Community Ed. I really would like to start to teach and club fit again and utilize my head pro role here.”

Jackson relied on Bengston’s advice heavily during the process of giving him control.

“I don’t think I’ve learned enough from him,” Jackson said. “I need to know 28 years’ worth and that’s a lifetime for me. I’ve taken everything I can from him while he’s still here. We’ve worked side by side and Steve has been nothing but kind and super inviting. He really made it about me when really part of this should be about him. A lot of people know and love him here. He’s done a ton of great things for the golf course and the area. It really shows what Steve has built here.”

Chipping can improve your game

Over the winter I seem to always get asked about ways for players to improve their game and I think the one place that gets overlooked the most is chipping.

A solid chipping technique starts with a proper setup. In chipping the set up begins with ball position. Place the ball slightly back of center in your stance, with your weight favoring your front foot. Of all the quickest ways to improve your chipping, the easiest place is by focusing on weight distribution.

Next length of backswing is key, and one of the most common mistakes I see amateur golfers make when chipping is taking too long of a backswing. To improve, focus on making a short, controlled backswing, keeping your wrists firm and your arms connected to your body. Then, accelerate through the ball with a smooth, confident stroke, maintaining a consistent tempo from start to finish.

Lastly, successful chipping is not just getting the ball close to the hole but also controlling its distance. Spend time practicing different length chip shots, ranging from short bump- andruns to longer pitch shots, and focus on developing a feel for how far the ball will roll out after impact. Typically, it is easiest to think about landing the ball 1/3 of the way to the hole and letting it roll our 2/3. Pay attention to your tempo and rhythm, as these factors play a significant role in distance control.

Overall, as you look for ways to lower your score this season, don’t start by trying to gain 10 more yards with your driver, but rather hit your chips 10 feet closer to the hole.

Improvements at Madden’s welcome golfers

The conditions on the course and the playability of the golf courses at Madden’s have been appreciated by golfers for years. Consistently recognized as some of the finest in the state, four championship courses mean there is a place to play for everyone. The Classic has been recognized by Golf Digest and Golf Week magazine as one of the top places to play in the state. Updates to the course will make it better than ever.

Tanner Schoenfelder is the Head Superintendent of Golf and Grounds at Madden’s Resort. He talks about some of the recent changes made to the resort’s courses.

“Over at The Classic, we are reshaping the bunkers on Hole 11. It is one of our more picturesque holes,” Schoenfelder says. When aerial photos noted natural changes slowly over time to the shape and size of the course, staff decided to take steps to restore it to the original shape. Play will not be any different for

golfers. New sand will soon be found at all the bunkers on the classic. The project is two-thirds done this year with completion set for next year. One last project at the Classic includes re-leveling and resurfacing the driving range tee.

The largest project of the season will be a complete reconstruction of the driving range by the airport. It will be completed by in-house staff by Madden’s. Nothing will be changed at the tee box or putting green. Aesthetic changes to the driving range are on tap, too. “We will have all new target greens,” says Schoenfelder. “The Target greens and fairways will be a different variety of grass than the rough. The variety we are putting on the greens

and fairway are a fine fescue mix. This will give us a really nice definition between the target greens and the rough. The change means you will be able to see the target greens better from the tee with the difference in color.”

Schoenfelder says the design of the new driving range at Maddens has been his baby.

“It has always been a dream of mine to work on some golf course architecture. This is a great starting project. I threw a few ideas at them, and they decided to go with it.” This year golfers will also notice new mulch and mulch beds, more flowers and a new Madden’s sign at the entrance.

The changes should all be completed by June. “We have a really good grounds staff at Madden’s,” he says, “Our plan is to always keep improving.

Start the backswing with your shoulders, not your hands and wrist. Coil your ribcage and keep your arms quiet. Transition back to the ball using your turn, don’t pull the grip down. This fluid motion will allow you to expertly control your distance.

DEERWOOD — Another par 3 golf course in the lakes area has Scott Hoffman’s fingerprints on it.

Ruttger’s Bay Lake Resorts is reopening Alec’s 9 as a par 3 course in May. The longest hole is set to be 119 yards with the shortest being 70 yards. The reopening of Alec’s 9 will give Ruttger’s 27 holes on its property along with Jack’s 18.

“The vision was really kind of the par 3 course at Augusta,” Hoffman said. “Just pretty holes working away back and forth around the pond. We had about a half acre wetland to start with, which we turned into about a three acre lake, so we had about 15 acres to work with. We decided to do more of a wedge style short course and something that would be very aesthetically good

looking and be fun to play for all different categories of golfers.”

Ruttger’s head professional Dave Sadlowsky is excited about having the addition of Alec’s 9, especially after a recent trip he took with his family to Pebble Beach in California.

“We played The Hay, which is the short course at Pebble Beach,” Sadlowsky said. “I had never played

a short course before, believe it or not, and it was so dang fun. It took a casual hour to play with just a few wedges and a putter. So I’m very excited about the Alec 9 being opened especially with it being shut down for two years for reconstruction. It’ll be nice to have it back.”

Sadlovsky hopes the new Alec’s 9 can be a gem to the resort. He added having Hoffman’s name on the project will help.

“The previous version of the course was 100 years old and had seen numerous revisions throughout the years, but it was just kind of tiring,” Sadlovsky said. “The motivation behind it was to make it kind of a gem of the resort. Having Scott, who is well-known for his designs in the area and an expert locally and regionally, was nice to have.”

Playability was a huge goal for Sadlovsky with the new Alec’s 9. He wants it to be friendly for all ages and skill levels.

“It’s going to be great for families and kids, but I really want it to be enticing to better players as well,” Sadlovsky said. “We’ve got bent grass and white sand bunkers and every hole except for No. 5 is wrapped in and around or alongside a large water feature. It’s going to have that visual appeal for every golfer from beginner to expert.

“Some other cool features include having top notch wooden flag sticks and we’re going to have drink holders on the tees and the greens. We also have bronze tee markers and things of that nature.”

A twist with Alec’s 9 is the tees and fairways will all be mowed to where someone could use a putter for the entire round.

“When Scott designed the place other than one hole it can literally be played with a putter,” Sadlovsky said. “A lot of the holes are downhill and so it will be very playable.”

Hoffman added: “It’s all going to be tightly mowed, so if you want to play a hole with a putter, more power to you.”

It’s not the first par 3 golf course Hoffman has designed this decade. Hoffman architected the Gravel Pits Golf Course on Gull River Road, which is a 13-hole par 3 course. The Alec’s 9 course at Ruttger’s will be much different from the Gravel Pits.

“I love the Gravel Pit and it’s the coolest thing I’ve seen, but our course will be more playable,” Sadlovsky said.

Hoffman added: “What the directors wanted was something that the whole family could play. We wanted to create enough interest for the better player, but also, Grandma and Grandpa could get out there with the grandkids. It’s a walking course only and you can play it in probably an hour or hour and a half. It’s a nice addition to Jack’s 18.”

Chipping in golf requires a blend of technique, strategy and mental focus. Here are some key mental approaches to consider:

1. Visualization: Before your shot, visualize the trajectory and landing spot of your chip. Imagine the ball landing softly on the green and rolling toward the hole.

2. Stay Calm: Keep your mind calm and focused. Avoid rushing your shot or letting frustration affect your decision-making.

3. Confidence: Approach each chip with confidence in your abilities. Believe that you can execute the shot successfully.

4. Focus on the Process: Instead of worrying about the outcome, focus on the process of making a good chip. Pay attention to your setup, alignment, and swing.

5. Acceptance: Understand that not every chip will be perfect. Accept the outcome, whether it’s a great shot or a miss, and move on to the next shot without dwelling on the result.

6. Positive Self-Talk: Use positive self-talk to reinforce your confidence. Remind yourself of your skills and past successes.

7. Adaptability: Be prepared to adapt your strategy based on the lie of the ball, the condition of the green, and other factors. Stay flexible in your approach.

8. Focus on the Target: Keep your focus on the landing spot rather than the mechanics of your swing. This can help you make a more natural, fluid motion.

9. Routine: Develop a pre-shot routine for your chips to help you stay focused and consistent. This can include visualizing the shot, taking practice swings, and addressing the ball in a consistent manner.

10. Stay Present: Avoid thinking about past mistakes or future shots. Stay present and focused on the current shot. By approaching chipping with a positive and focused mindset, you can improve your chances of executing successful chips on the course.

Crosswoods: A hidden gem

Everyone knows how hard the Stone family works to keep Crosswoods Golf Course one of the most welcoming places for golfers in the area to play. What you might not know is that they work just as hard to make sure wildlife feels just at home, too.

“We are in a unique area here,” Mike Stone says of the location of Crosswoods. “We are in the heart of Crosslake but about twothirds of our 250 acre course is located within a state wildlife refuge. We have minimal housing around the course. You can see a whole host of wildlife out here. The idea for us is to preserve north woods habitat for an abundance of native species. We have had golfers come in that have reported seeing black bears, wild turkeys and even an occasional moose. Once in a while someone will see a wolf, usually in the early morning. We know they are out

there, but they are very secretive.”

Mike says, growing up in the area, he enjoyed watching a beautiful palette of butterflies living in the area. However, over the last 40 years, he noticed an overall decline in the butterfly populations, especially the monarch, and wanted to do something about it. “We have close to five acres dedicated to monarch milkweed habitat, the plant necessary for them to thrive. We do not spray herbicides or pesticides in that area to protect the butterflies and other pollinators.” Mike’s wife, Kelly, is from Oregon and shares his appreciation for keeping the wildlife that live there, Kelly says, “Everything from tree frogs to walking sticks. We try to keep a watch out for and work to preserve.”

Trumpeter swans are also found around the course and a keen eye will spot ladyslippers growing.

Mike keeps a spreadsheet of the animal sightings around the Crosswoods course. “Every time someone sees something

new, we add it to the list. We like to hear what golfers have seen while enjoying the course.”

This year Crosswoods has become a true family operation with daughter Alexandra stepping in to work at the course in food service and bookkeeping. She joins sister Savannah, a PGA certified golf professional who directs the course’s junior program and gives lessons.

While running one of the most successful golf courses in the area, many of the everyday details in running

Crosswoods are based with an eye to conservation. “A few years ago, we converted to lithium battery-powered carts to limit the emissions we are creating,” says Stone, “We are very judicious in how we maintain the course. We take the responsibility of preserving the area and all it has to offer, seriously.”

While there are 27 holes of pristine greens available for challenging play, Stone hopes one of the many reasons golfers enjoy the course is its connection to nature. It has been rewarding for him to create a haven for golfers and wildlife alike. Because he enjoys both.

Newly designed and renovated golf course at Cragun’s Legacy Courses

Imagine, you’re teeing off hole number 11, a par 3 of the Dutch 18, the wind is in your favor, the flag is positioned perfectly. You set your stance. The 7-iron’s face is square with the ball and you begin your backswing. Whoosh! The ball rises to the perfect pitch before falling, hitting the green and you watch it roll into the cup — the euphoric feeling of hitting your first hole in one.

That same feeling can be experienced when you play Cragun’s Legacy Courses newly designed and renovated golf course designed by PGA TOUR Pro and Minnesota native Tom Lehman.

Over the past five years, Cragun’s

and Lehman have worked side by side to design the best championship golf course in Minnesota. A totally reimagined golf course with 36 brand new holes of golf with another nine holes opening up this fall. This will complete the last phase of the Dutch 27 renovation bringing Cragun’s Legacy Courses to a total of 45 holes of championship golf.

Be Home for Dinner: Pace of Play Tips

Golf is becoming a very popular sport for all ages and abilities over the past decade. An often forgotten topic in golf is pace of play or how long a typical round of golf should last. As a PGA golf professional, we will instruct our students to be aware of the time you are on the course. I have some simple rules to follow to help you the next time you are playing:

1. 4 for 4: If you are playing with 4 players on a regulation course, please allow no more than 4 hours to play. Some courses will vary within 15-30 minutes based on the difficulty of the course.

2. Tee it Forward: Try playing up a tee box than you normally would. You will put yourself in better yardages and easier clubs to hit so you will spend less time searching for your golf balls. Plus, you might start shooting better scores and in return enjoy your post round beverages more!

3. READY, SET, GO: Play READY

GOLF, which means, if you are ready to hit your golf ball with no opportunities to endanger another person, go right ahead and play away while your playing partners are preparing for their shot, looking for their ball, or getting a refreshment. The “honors system” can work if you can keep your pace as a group, however playing ready golf will cut significant time off your round and your group can chat on the greens and tees while others are playing. When your golf group works together to help rake bunkers, fill divots and fix ball marks for all players in the group, you can save precious time.

4. Look AHEAD: Your position on the golf course is directly BEHIND the group AHEAD of you…NOT AHEAD of the group BEHIND you.

5. Tick Tock: You should have a checkpoint of 6 holes in 1 hour and 20 minutes from when you teed off.

6. Lunc h Break: Try and

minimize your refreshment or food breaks to 5 minutes at the turn.

7. Gatekeeper: Allow other groups that may be faster or have less players in the group to PLAY THROUGH. If you feel your group is allowing every group to play through, you might want to rethink your pace of play strategy as you could be on the course all day.

8. Say Uncle: Set a max score per hole when playing. If you reach that score, grab your ball and go directly to the green and putt out. It can get discouraging if you are constantly doing the “bouncing finger” counting method after every hole to replay your shots.

So try some of these techniques this summer on the course and see if you can save some time on the links. As we all know, your significant other expects you home in four hours for dinner, so do we.

Emily Greens: It’s all about fun on the golf course

When you come out to play a round of golf, your main goal is to have some fun while enjoying the great outdoors. Great Places Minnesota included the 17th hole at Emily Greens as one of its “Great 18.” Family outings with three or even four generations on the first tee creates that hallmark moment that becomes part of a family’s legacy that will be relived at the family get togethers for years to come.

In 2018 and 2019, Emily Greens was voted the No. 1 course in the Best of

Martin takes over as head pro at The Pines

NISSWA — Golf wasn’t always Eric Martin’s No. 1 sport.

The 23-year-old was named the new head professional at The Pines at Grand View Lodge this year, but he spent most of his springs on the baseball diamond in high school and college.

Martin was a standout pitcher for Brainerd High School and also started on the basketball team. He played a season at Central Lakes College before wanting to make a career change into golf.

“I started working at Grand View about nine years ago as an outside service staff,” Martin said. “After about four years of outside service, I ended up going into the pro shop. When the staff kind of left in 2020, I started taking more responsibility and became an assistant golf professional. Two

years ago, I became a lead assistant and when this opportunity came about this winter I was happy to take in something that I always thought I was going to end up doing four years ago. It’s pretty exciting, actually.”

It was during 2020 when Martin decided he was going to try to be a head golf professional.

“When I started taking more responsibilities and got more involved with leagues, events and junior golf that’s where the passion stemmed from,” Martin said. “Beforehand, I played golf on the side, but baseball and basketball were things and I didn’t really focus on golf.”

Martin played three seasons of college baseball, but made the decision prior to his senior season to focus on his career in the golf industry.

“I just fell in love with the golf industry more than I loved baseball.”

“I just fell in love with the golf industry more than I loved baseball,” Martin said. “I decided to commit full time to Grand View because it’s what I love to do.”

Martin comes from a golfing family. His mom was the girls’ golf coach at Brainerd for many years including coaching the 1999 girls’ golf state title and his dad is the clubhouse manager at The Pines.

“It’s very fun to work alongside my dad and see him,” Martin said. “My mom was a golf coach for a long time. My uncle and aunt are golfers and stay at Grand View. It’s something that’s been built for the past four or five years being a family that’s been a part of Grand View.”

Adam Haugen, who is the director of golf at Grand View Lodge was one mentor for Martin as he transitioned from outside service to head professional. He also learned a lot from former Grand View Lodge director of golf Jack Wawro, who is the current director of golf at Cragun’s Legacy Courses.

“Adam and Jack both have been a big piece of me growing,” Martin said. “Jack has been someone who has molded me into the person I am today. I’ve had a lot of great influences along the way and I’m going to keep learning from those people as not only a head golf professional, but as a person too.”

Martin knows relationships are key as he begins his career as a head golf professional.

“You have to create a relationship with everybody because relationships create a good environment,” Martin said. “I stress that to myself and to our staff on a daily basis. Once you develop those relationships you can go anywhere from that.”

Martin hopes to stay at Grand View Lodge for a long time.

“I see myself working here for the indefinite future,” he said. “It’s a great place to work and it’s a place I’ve grown up not only literally, but mentally. I am the person I am today because of the experiences I’ve had at Grand View.”

Tips FROM A PRO The Putting Gate Drill

Cody Mager — Head Professional at the Classic at Madden’s

Are you having trouble consistently returning the putter face back to square at impact during your golf rounds? If so, you might find yourself pushing or pulling putts. Fortunately, the putting gate drill is an excellent way to develop your putting stroke swing path and ensure that you create a more consistent putter swing path. By achieving a more consistent putter swing path, you will find yourself hitting your putts on your intended line more often. The drill is so effective that even Tiger Woods uses it during his pre-tournament round warm-up sessions.

To perform the putting gate drill, start by placing two tees slightly wider than the head of your putter 3-5 feet away from the hole. This creates a gate for your putter to swing through. Make sure that the two tees are inserted into the green surface snugly. You can give yourself some room for error when first trying this putting drill. During this drill, the objective is to strike your putt while allowing the putter head to pass through the gate without hitting the inside or outside tees that you have inserted into the green surface.

To achieve this, your putting stroke should be straight back and straight through. This allows the putter head to pass through the gate square to your intended line. Practicing this drill regularly will help you make more of the short putts.

This drill is a great tool to practice while you are at your favorite golf club. I highly recommend practicing this drill before your tee time and you should see more made putts inside five feet.

The courses at Grand View Lodge have been at the top of the awards lists for years. A favorite with both locals, and visitors alike, golfers of all skill levels favor the conditions and playability offered by the resort.

With pre-books better than ever this year and golfers excited to get out on the course, the mild winter and late season snow that had anxious golfers tapping their toes, means they are more than ready to tee off.

Some changes this year mean this season will be one of the best. New tee boxes and bunkers will greet visitors to the Marsh 9 at Grand View. Ohio’s best white sand has been brought in and added to all the bunkers, which have also been treated to new drainage and cart paths.

A few recent tweaks to the courses at the resort mean more challenges, more fun, and more satisfying play than ever.

On a hill? Remember these things

If the ball is below your feet on a hill, the natural flight of the ball will now be more left to right. Maybe take one more club up as the left to right ball flight takes a little distance off of your shot.

When you are on a hill and the ball is above your feet, the ball fight will be more right to left. Here you might want to choke down on your club as the distance from club to ground is a little shorter.

Regardless of above or below your feet, make sure you take some practice swings to test out your balance, as keeping balance on these shots is key.

Standing over the ball, thoughts swirling: “Don’t top this one,” or “Please, not in the hazard again.” Golf is a game of physical skill, but it’s also deeply psychological. Confidence is a fickle friend. It ebbs and flows, presenting a challenge on the road to mastery. Picture yourself about to climb a mountain. You start from the valley below, where confidence is low, eyeing the challenge ahead. How will you conquer it? Are you prepared for the hard

work ahead? These doubts make you nervous and hesitant. But as you climb, overcoming obstacles like shooting your best score or mastering a new technique, confidence grows. At the summit, you’re on top of the world, having conquered a major challenge. Then it’s time to descend and face a new mountain. The cycle repeats.

4. Simplified Rating: Rate each shot as: Good enough, good or great. Simplifying your rating eliminates negativity and shifts your mindset.

5. Have Fun: Laugh at mistakes, remember it’s just a game, and enjoy the company of friends.

In golf, everyone experiences peaks and valleys. Embrace the challenges, for they are the path to improvement. Though confidence may waver, keep climbing. Your performance will improve, and confidence will return.
