AREA ATTRACTIONS Outdoor Recreation
CUYUNA COUNTRY STATE RECREATION AREA Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area boasts 25 miles of forested shoreline, providing peaceful relaxation for those who desire a rustic experience. Leave technology behind and embrace the sun dancing on quiet, crystal blue waters, the crackling warmth of a campfire and the haunting call of loons. Start the day by mountain biking over 30 miles of groomed trails. Spend a lazy afternoon paddling in a canoe or kayak. Slip over the side in scuba gear and explore the remnants of an iron mine hundreds of feet below the still surface. Plan a day or a week to camp, bike, hike and fish, but leave the motorized off-road vehicles at home as they are not allowed in the park. Get a great overview of the area atop Miner’s Mountain, from Pennington Lake near Ironton. Bike, hike or drive up the outlook trails’ winding switchbacks to the highest point in the area. There you will have a beautiful vista of numerous lakes and forests. Sixteen primitive, first-come, first-serve camp sites and unsupervised beach are available at the Portsmouth Campground off County Road 30 north of Ironton.
