experience is front and centre, sustainability is key, and the rulebook is well and truly being thrown out. The spirit of the modern wedding movement weaves through these pages. Mediterranean Dreams brings the colours and laidback vibes of Ibiza to a Devon rural idyll, complete with an aerial acrobat, saxophonist and party-ready mood, while Modern Love sets the scene for a contemporary wedding where soft neutrals meet industrial accents. Natural Wonders draws inspiration from the rolling hills and flower-filled meadows of new wedding venue Holwell Farmhouse – a perfect canvas for couples dreaming of marrying their love for the outdoors with their love for each other in a tucked-away corner of Devon. RURAL ROMANCE Set amidst 65 acres of picture-perfect Devon farmland close to Exmoor National Park, Holwell Farmhouse is a beautifully restored Grade II listed retreat. The historic meadows are roamed by ewes, horses and a farm cat all year round, and during the winter months, 40 wild red deer arrive annually to seek refuge on its green hills. Offering rural escapism and romance in equal measure, it is a dream wedding venue for nature-loving couples. Owner Ollie Greenslade has sensitively renovated the farmhouse to incorporate historic features with modern comforts. Accommodating between 11 and 16 guests, all bedrooms enjoy en suite facilities and come with soft furnishings to provide a home-from-home feel. A picturesque and versatile setting for celebrations of all sizes, the farmhouse lends itself to an intimate event with close family and friends, while large-scale receptions take place in a marquee complete with mesmerising countryside panoramas and glamping-style accommodation. In addition to weddings, Holwell Farmhouse is becoming an increasingly popular destination for stag and hen celebrations. Choose from a wealth of activities, from archery and course fishing to clay pigeon shooting and horse riding on Exmoor. Or why not try getting back to nature with a spot of foraging and wild cooking? A love of the outdoors, wildlife, farming and people lies at the heart of the ethos at Holwell Farmhouse, providing an idyllic setting for relaxed yet sophisticated wedding, stag

HEAVEN ON EARTH Picture this: a Napoleonic Fort sitting on a Cornish cliff-top, rolling lawns and wildflower-filled gardens slipping down to the sea and a private beach for loved up wanders at the water’s edge. Nestled in a tucked-away corner of the Rame Peninsula with soul-stirring sea views, Polhawn Fort really is the stuff of dreams. A personal and highly flexible approach is key to the venue’s appeal. Whether you’re planning a simple, intimate wedding or a seriously stylish affair on a grand-scale, the exclusive-use venue makes the perfect canvas. What’s more, its magic is year-round: a summer wedding might see a garden ceremony in the summerhouse followed by frolics on the sand and sundowners on the roof garden terrace. A winter wedding is equally enchanting, with vows beneath the vaulted ceilings and twinkling lights of the grand Napoleonic hall and candlelit celebrations while a log fire crackles and waves crash at the shores below. Complete with a drawbridge and spiral staircase, Polhawn Fort is as unique as it is captivating. And, with accommodation for up to

The relaxed, sun-drenched vibe of Ibiza and, in particular, the island’s renowned Ocean Beach Club inspired the palette and mood of this styled shoot in the picturesque setting of Uphill Farm’s walled garden. “Anyone who has been to Ibiza will likely be familiar with Ocean Beach Club – a fun, lavish poolside day club which regularly features world-class entertainment and feel-good vibes,” explains Laura Dalton from Kept Weddings who styled and coordinated the shoot. “The club is instantly recognisable with its pure white daybeds and bright orange décor contrasting against the turquoise waters of the pool.”

Arranged with cushions on the grass to create that laidback Ibiza ambience, gorgeous tangerine florals bring warmth and colour to the tablescape, while the cake is decorated with shades of ocean blue. Mesmerising entertainment and flavoursome tapas, however, were key to creating the fun-filled, sensory delights of Ocean Beach Club. “It was important to incorporate an Ibiza saxophonist and a freestanding aerial hoop artist who can freestyle alongside the couple as they chill and tuck into delicious Spanish delights,” says Laura. The fun mood extends to the fashions. “Staying true to Ibiza style, the bride was adorned with a statement headpiece and matching jewellery to add elegance to a wild theme,” she says. Her braided half up, half down hair and sun-kissed makeup adds to the relaxed, summer feel. Of course, the most important ingredient of an Ibiza inspired wedding is dancing – and lots of it! This was key to Laura’s outfit choices: “The bride and groom were dressed in lightweight materials to allow them to move freely and dance the night away under the festoon lights of the walled garden,” she concludes.

MODERN LOVE
Wedding planner Phoebe Taylor of Clover & Fern was inspired to go back to basics for this contemporary styled shoot, blending a neutral palette with industrial elements. “I wanted to create a very airy, natural and relaxed yet modern set-up with lots of neutral tones and loose fabrics elevated with the use of gold,” she explains. Nestled in the heart of rural Devon, Higher Holcombe offers a perfect canvas for the contemporary and incredibly versatile aesthetic. “Our photographer, Danielle, wanted to use a lot of natural light and solid lines to create some stunning editorial shots. The black framed windows and poured concrete floor of the Old Dairy worked so perfectly for the neutral and industrial inspired styling,” says Phoebe. The tablescape blends a palette of soft shades – think beige and cream with hints of rust and blush – with gold accents and natural textures of rattan and wood. “I fell in love with our florist’s idea for a floral centrepiece with a black matt metal arch in a block of wood,” says Phoebe. “I continued the matt black theme throughout the tablescape, mainly in the candlesticks and cutlery which gave a really contemporary edge to the soft fabrics on the table.” Adorned with neutral florals, the cake carries the texture and achingly modern mood, while the smooth curves, gold tassels and wax seals of the stationery echo the softness of the scene. Then there’s the bride and groom. Simple and elegant, the bride’s off-the-shoulder gown, dainty pearls and relaxed updo are gorgeously in sync with the groom’s coolly laidback look – the epitome of trending yet timelessly chic wedding style.

IVORY DREAMS A year has passed since Plymouth’s luxe bridal boutique, The Ivory Lounge, opened its doors for the first time – and what a year it’s been. “It has been such an incredible year, with five-star reviews all round,” enthuses manager, Rachael Crossley. Home to one of the biggest names in bridal fashion, the boutique has earned a glowing reputation for combining fashion-forward design with impeccably crafted gowns and stellar service. The Vera Wang Bride dresses, in particular, have been causing a stir with style-savvy brides: Lucille is a veritable work of art with its bustier bodice and sculptured fishtail skirt; we love the corset bodice, nude tones and floral lace of Hortense; then there’s playful drama of Babette, its gorgeous bustle of organza and tulle contrasting with the clean lines of the skirt. A dreamlike selection of dresses from Ellis Bridals can also be found in-store, from ballgowns through to sleek fit and flare cuts finished with dazzling beadwork, delicate lace and sculptural bows. And, for those seeking a relaxed, modern dress, Kelsey Rose has a range of silhouettes with light, playful skirts made for dancing, delicate beaded detailing and a touch of sparkle. theivorylounge.co.uk

The latest arrivals from GAIA Bridal are particularly dreamy: designed in the UK and crafted with fine fabrics and exquisite detailing, the confections of tulle, beaded lace and exposed boning are the very picture of modern romance. Milly’s handcrafted jewellery offers brides a variety of bespoke and ready-towear pieces featuring her signature textural style. Specialising in recycling old jewellery and scrap metal, Milly combines a passion for silversmithing with the ancient technique of granulation to create pieces “inspired by texture, organic design and pushing metal to its limits.” Whether you fancy donning a dazzling pair of earrings, eye-catching pendant, stunning bracelet or stacking your rings, Milly’s wedding collection comes in gold, silver and mixed metals in an assortment of designs all with her idiosyncratic style. You might choose the luxurious barnacle and pearl earrings, fusing a cluster cloud of textured granules with lustrous baroque pearls; for statement neckwear, pick the beautifully textured barnacle necklace – which looks fab paired with the barnacle bracelet and drop earrings. GOLD RUSH Not only have Devon master goldsmiths Isabella Day and Ford Hallam opened their own atelier – The Remarkable Goldsmiths – in Dartmouth this summer, but the exceptional talent of the Devon jewellers has also been recognised by jewellery bodies on a national and international basis. Isabella has been selected as a finalist for Designer of the Year at the Association of National Jewellers; she is also the only female fellow of the Institute of Professional Jewellers in the Southwest. Meanwhile, Ford has won the top gold prizes for the art and skill of Japanese metalwork (Kinko) in the top national competition in Japan. Using traditional goldsmithing techniques and making their own gold alloys from scratch, Isabella and Ford craft extraordinary contemporary treasures from their Dartmouth studio. Specialising in distinct and ethical gemstones as well as reworking heirloom jewels, the pair can shape, forge and handcraft over 26 different colours of gold into whatever you desire, whether it’s a wedding ring or engagement ring or a striking piece of jewellery reflective of your love story to wear on your wedding day and treasure forever. theremarkablegoldsmiths.co.uk

RING AWAKENING
While sustainability is a key consideration for many couples in the throes
Erin Cox
of wedding planning, the environmental impact of the rings can often be overlooked. Happily, there’s some dazzling options to suit all tastes and budgets from jewellers who are passionate about creating pieces with maximum impact on the eye and minimal impact on the planet. From rings crafted from recycled materials to sourcing pre-loved treasures, here’s some expert advice for choosing a sustainable symbol of your union.
Material world “The best way to know your ring is sustainable is to ask about the materials it has been made with,” says Janie Wolverson at Erin Cox, who uses recycled gold as standard. “As we handcraft all our jewellery we know where the metals and gems have been sourced and are more than happy to talk about each piece!” Kayleigh Gresty Photography
Designer-maker Corrinne Eira Evans explains the main two options. “There’s recycled – which is where old jewellery, metal scraps and findings are melted back down and reformed into workable material for the jeweller to reuse. This is an amazing way to be environmentally friendly as there’s no mining involved,” she says. “Then there’s Fairtrade or Fairmined. This is another great alternative, supporting miners with the best health and safety from source and making sure they’re paid a fair wage. You can check Fairtrade registered jewellers on fairtrade. org.uk.”
Corrinne Eira Evans
Erin is a proudly registered Fairtrade designer, with each piece bearing the Fairtrade logo alongside her hallmark. “If you are looking to buy Fairtrade, ask to see the hallmark as only makers who follow very stringent guidelines are registered to work with Fairtrade gold will be able to have this mark applied,” suggests Janie. Isabella Day and Ford Hallam of The Remarkable Goldsmiths in Dartmouth make all their alloys from recycled fine gold. “We make 26 different colours of gold,” says Isabella, who explains how sustainability extends beyond the choice of metal and gemstones. “As master alloy makers, we are a heritage craft and members of the Heritage Crafts Association. Our knowledge in this is protected as an intangible cultural asset – commissioning work from us means that knowledge won’t die and we can pass on our skills. Sustainability is also about protecting and supporting real craftspeople.” “All the gold we use is 100% recycled and because we cast our jewellery ourselves, we do lots of the recycling in-house too,” says Jamila Hirtenstein from Justin Duance, who also extols the virtues of shopping locally for added provenance and benevolence. “Shopping independent and local has huge impact on the sustainability of our communities,” she says. “It means that your money The Remarkable Goldsmiths
is circulating among the little fish. Shopping small comes hand in hand with individuality and care, as real love has been put into each piece we make.” “Our ethics go beyond the materials we use and we’re always looking for ways we can reduce our impact on the planet, from our sustainable cork ring boxes to our morning coffee. Being awarded Plastic Free Status by Plastic Free Penzance and Surfers Against Sewage is a sign of the changes we have made to minimise our plastic pollution,” she adds.
Ethical gems The stones, however, can be a more problematic issue when it comes to buying your wedding rings, which Jamila further explains. “There’s no Fairtrade certification for gemstones, so there has to be an element of trust involved,” she concedes. “We have made a pledge to only use fully traced gemstones and diamonds in our jewellery, which means that we know where the stone was mined, cut and polished. Once the stones are with us, we continue to keep a record of them right up until they are on your finger.” “The suppliers we work with are at the forefront of changing the status quo and by supporting them we are seeing the change filtering through. Our white diamonds come from CanadaMark, whose stones over 0.5ct come with a code so you can trace them yourself on their website.”

ring she is currently working on: “The sapphire comes from Sri Lanka where it’s been mined by local people who are paid fair wages. We get to see photos of the mine with our stones. Our dealer hand selects the gems directly from them there.” She also works with recycled stones at the Dartmouth atelier, as do the team at Justin Duance. “We are really excited to now have a reliable source of vintage diamonds that were cut by hand in centuries past,” says Jamila. “Old mine cut diamonds twinkle differently from modern brilliant cuts. They have more character and pair beautifully with our sandcast rings, making really individual rings.” Salt and pepper diamonds are currently a popular choice, not only for their unique appearance but also as they
Erin Cox
The Remarkable Goldsmiths
require less resources to mine. Whatever your personal preferences, exercising a degree of due diligence should result in you finding the perfect stone from a sustainable source.
Pre-loved treasures Of course, you don’t have to buy or commission a piece outright, as purchasing something pre-loved or reworking pieces you already own might also solve the sustainability quandary.
Justin Duance
Justin Duance
“When purchasing vintage jewellery, be aware the claws on settings will probably be worn and the band may be under more tension from years of love and so will need investment in the near future,” warns Corrinne. “When shopping, make sure to run your fingers over the claws – any catching or grittiness may be the sign of a loose claw.” “Another option for keeping your rings sustainable is to use your own materials,” says Janie. “Erin is able to remodel your own gold, platinum and stones, or cast the metal in molten wedding ring moulds.” By reusing a vintage or heirloom piece, not only are you extending its story and lifeline, but you’re also guaranteed a beautifully bespoke end product. It is a process Isabella and Ford at The Remarkable Goldsmiths are passionate about. “We often make rings
The Remarkable Goldsmiths
from inherited gold which is a lovely way to make use of sentimental pieces people no longer want or need,” says Isabella. “Tastes change, and jewellery carries so much sentiment, it’s really special to be able to give a sentimental piece a new lease of life,” agrees Jamila. “It can be worth asking members of your family if they have any old jewellery they would contribute as a wedding gift,” she suggests. “Some of the most special pieces we have made have been from amalgamations of family heirlooms.” Corrinne Eira Evans corrinneeiraevans.com Erin Cox erincox.co.uk Justin Duance justind.co.uk The Remarkable Goldsmiths theremarkablegoldsmiths.co.uk

From the ewes and horses roaming its historic meadows and ponds abuzz with bees, birds and dragonflies to the wild red deer who seek refuge in the winter, Holwell Farmhouse is a dream setting for a wedding immersed in nature. Flanked by rolling Devon hills within its own 65-acre valley, the picturesque location of the Grade II listed farmhouse was the starting point for this styled shoot, which paints a charm-filled picture of a relaxed wedding in the countryside. “We used natural colours to draw upon the setting of Holwell Farmhouse and the surrounding countryside – lots of blues, greens, whites and wood,” explains Hazel Parsons of Out Of The Ordinary Weddings and Keeping It Vintage, who coordinated and styled the shoot. “ The Sassi Holford gown – an ethereal vision of delicately embroidered tulle with florals in shades of amber, cornflower and evergreen – also inspired much of the styling. “We picked accents from the gown to flow through the details throughout,” says Hazel. Set amidst the walled garden with far-reaching views across the surrounding meadows, the tablescape offers natural, unfussy styling, where the colours of the glassware, bunches of lavender and hearty sharing platters of fruits, meats and cheeses pop against the wooden table and slate grey tableware. A semi-naked cake and colourful hand-painted stationery adds to the charm. Bedecked in foliage and wild florals, the cream frontage of the period farmhouse makes an idyllic setting for an outdoor ceremony, while the character-filled interiors and period features of the farmhouse make for an intimate and memorable indoor option. And we love the idea of jumping aboard a Land Rover and spending those first newly married moments taking in the valley views and blissful rural seclusion of this scenic corner of Devon.

The scenic setting of new wedding venue Pier One Plymouth was the focal point of this styled shoot. Located on Plymouth Sound, mesmerising views of the sea fill the floor-to-ceiling windows of the stylish restaurant, while the balcony makes a sublime spot to bask in the sun and fresh sea air. “The coastal scenery is the star of the shoot,” says wedding manager Monika Zdrojewska of the modern romantic scene styled against a canvas of blue seas and skies. “Everything about the décor is soft, light and rich in tone and texture. The elegant table is styled with bronze cutlery, white tableware and pink vintage glasses, all finished with a stylish and statement-making white backdrop.” Roses and dainty buds in shades of blush, cream and white perfectly reflect the aesthetic, as does the cake. “With delicate ruffled icing, a gorgeous floating tier and delicate sugar avalanche roses, it really gives the wow factor against the ocean backdrop,” says Monika. Delicate floral detailing carries onto the bridal gowns: the designs blend bold floral lace, intricate beading and subtle sparkle which glints in the sunlight – the epitome of relaxed elegance complemented by pearl jewellery and softly waved hair. Bearing the outline of the Devon coastline, the handcrafted wedding rings and cufflinks make a stunning nod to the coastal location – a symbol of this dreamy seaside wedding to treasure.

REGENCY ROMANCE
New wedding venue Moreton House in North Devon makes a dream setting for this Regency inspired styled shoot. From bridal gowns to colour palettes, the impact of Bridgerton has been far-reaching in the wedding world, and the elegant rooms and sweeping staircase of the Georgian stately home make the perfect canvas for a wedding scene rich in romance and nostalgia with a luxe modern twist. The groom’s outfit - a dashing green velvet tuxedo paired with pinstripe trousers - offers a contemporary take on Regency style, while the modern bridal gowns nod to the Regency era via romantic silhouettes, puff sleeves and fanciful detail, finished with cascading curls and fresh, barely-there make-up. Echoing the soft elegance of the theme, a blend of muted pink, blue and peach with touches of white carries through the details. The ceremony takes place beneath an arch of trailing wisteria and blooms in the dreamlike Ballroom, styled with blossom trees and candles. In the Grand Dining Room, a table dressed with fine tableware, shades of Wedgewood blue and dusky pink, and decadent arrangements of flowers makes a lavish setting for a tea party of sweet delights. Bathed in candlelight for maximum romance, the scene is set for a modern love story played out in beautiful Georgian surrounds.

Does your marriage mark the creation of a new blended family? Here are some love-filled ideas to involve the children and make your family wedding unforgettable words Elizabeth Chester

WE ARE FAMILY
If you have children or stepchildren, your wedding not only marks a new beginning for you as a married couple – but as a new blended family. And, as you make all those key wedding decisions from the colour of the flowers to the flavour of the cake, you’ll need to consider the important question of how you involve your children or stepchildren in the big day. “In the UK, about 16% of dependent children are living in blended families where a household has stepparents and step-siblings,” says independent celebrant, Sabine Smith of Perfect Day Ceremonies (perfectdayceremonies.co.uk). There are elements of the wedding and, crucially the ceremony, where you can ensure the day is truly special for everyone. “For a modern blended family, a celebrant can be instrumental to ensure that each member of the family is valued and to enable them to build strong bonds for the future,” says Sabine. “Your wedding ceremony is at the heart of your special day and for me, as a celebrant, I am all for choices and creating memories for you for years to come.” Giving children a role for the ceremony is key to making it joyful and memorable for them. “It will build a beautiful bond for the future and a great sense of accomplishment,” she says. “When they look back on the day in years to come, they will remember and love the role they played – standing by your side.” Here, Sabine shares her top tips to ensure every member of the family feels included in your wedding ceremony.
Perfect blend “A sand ceremony is a beautiful way to demonstrate the coming together of the individual members of the family to create a new blended family. It not only symbolises the unity of the couple, but also the unity of their children. By joining together the different coloured sands into a vessel of choice, it symbolises that every member of the family has significance. As each grain of sand is poured, it instantly blends, signifying that you will never be able to separate them again, joining together the members as one blended family. My personal favourite!”
Plant a tree “What could be more sustainable and in touch with nature than planting a tree together? This is a real favourite for nature-loving couples and their children. Together, you will nurture and care for it, watching the tree grow over the years alongside your family. The tree may be planted at the venue or at your family’s favourite place.”
Words of love “Everyone loves hearing words of appreciation and love. Couples can create personal vows and promises for each other and lovingly involve the children who are adapting to being part of a new blended family, along with a personal gift or a piece of bespoke jewellery. I love it when I see a handwritten ‘thank you’ or ‘love you’ note placed into a time capsule or memory box which you make together. Getting this time capsule out on special occasions such as anniversaries or significant life events is pure joy.”
Join hands “A handfasting ceremony is a perfect way to symbolise the coming together of the different family members to tie the knot on the day. Each member of the family places a different colour ribbon over joined hands during the ceremony. With the help of the celebrant, you will create a lasting visual keepsake and memory to treasure in the future. This is a joy-filled and colourful way to celebrate your special day which will make everyone feel included.”
Get creative “If you and your blended family members are the creative types, why not create a painting together on the day using your favourite colours and textures? Like the sand ceremony, the result will be colourful and create a visual symbol of the blended family you have created.”
Meaningful memento “A fingerprint tree is a symbolic ritual I recently used to show the commitment of the entire family towards the new blended family. Every member of the family placed
79
feature | WE ARE FAMILY
their name and a print of their thumb onto the Holly Collings Photography
family tree to create a memorable keepsake of the day and the ceremony. This can be replicated and sent to close family members as a loving memory of this special moment.”
Role play “Children love having a special and important job during the wedding ceremony of their parent, such as pageboy or flower girl/boy. Another idea is allowing the children to sign the commitment certificate after the ceremony. However, I believe the most important responsibility for a child of a blended family is being the ring bearer and taking care of the bands which symbolise eternity and remind the couple every day of their love for one another. It will make them feel proud and instil a feeling of being part of this unity and love.”
THE AWW FACTOR Celebrate the creation of your newly made family with these sweet W-day ideas.
A cake’s the tops A very touching addition to a wedding cake is toppers of children on both sides of the newly made family. Who doesn’t want to see themselves immortalised in fondant? As long as the cake has sufficient circumference, what’s stopping you piling those toppers high to incorporate your entire family unit?
Family flash mob If your blended family is in the realms of double figures, how about you all perform as a flash mob? Not only will this bring a smile to your guests’ faces, but it’s also sure to make the performers feel pretty special too!
Designs on you Buttonholes are a brilliant way of uniting a group of various ages and sizes. Traditional buttonholes can be worn by the entire family to bring together all sides of both families. Or a modern take on the buttonhole can be badges – these may work well Holly Collings Photography
for younger members of the family and can even be crafted in a bonding session before the big day itself.
Lead the way Nothing jerks those tears quite like the arrival of mini-mes ahead of the happy couple. A children’s wedding procession could work wonders ahead of the ceremony or as a welcome to the wedding breakfast.
Twin-set And talking of mini-mes, dressing little ones to match the bride and groom is another sure-fire way to make the children feel special and involved, as well as showing how united they are and how much they all mean to you. We love the idea of little maids in mini-me versions of the bride’s wedding dress.

SPEECH THERAPY
After the happy couple has uttered their vows, there will be other words everyone will be waiting to hear: the speeches. They may fill you with dread – if you have a fear of public speaking, for one, and then there’s the potential for cringeworthy stories being shared with everyone from your granny to your workmates. However, when done right, the speeches can really kick off the party like nothing else. So take a deep breath, heed these top tips and look forward to wedding speeches everyone will remember for the right reasons.
Select your orators carefully. Though your best man might be the perfect stag planner, he might fare more unfavourably when it comes to speaking aloud. Don’t be afraid to go against the grain and if your best man or father of the bride aren’t the best men for the job then assign the role elsewhere. Ask an entrusted uncle/brother/cousin/friend to step in and say the right things in the right way instead. Everyone will

thank you.
Don’t Stand on ceremony if it doesn’t suit. If you want to skip the speeches entirely or just have one person say a few words, it’s your wedding and your choice.
Do Feel free to mix things up. Bridal speeches are gaining a huge following, while your granny, bridesmaid or flower girl might also want to say a few doting words. There really isn’t a rulebook – so write (and speak) and remember the speeches as one of the fondest parts of your day as opposed to the moment you’d rather forget.
Don’t

Be fooled into thinking it has to be hilarious. Yes, really. Your best mate might be an absolute hoot down the pub, but will his brand of humour translate in a wedding setting? You have to consider the audience, which could contain anyone from newborns to nonagenarians – a fact that could easily be forgotten after a smidge too much Dutch courage by said friend intent on sharing that stripper story...
Don’t Drink too much before the speeches (which should be painfully selfexplanatory).
Do Meet with everyone who will be making a speech both individually and completely happy with accepting the task). Not only can they sound out their ideas and find out if they’ve duplicated material, but you can veto anything too below the belt/divisive/tumbleweed and so on. You won’t ‘ruin’ the surprise of the day’s delivery and, if that’s something you’re

worried about, ask them to keep the specifics out before requesting they sit down again separately to go over them together.
Don’t Find your inspiration on the internet. Half of your audience will have heard it already, so it will sound false and impersonal. As teachers past no doubt warned you, plagiarism never works.
Do Be original. The simple trick is to tailor it to the couple, so as long as gags on a test audience first) and relay personal anecdote and history, you really can’t go too far wrong.

Fabric Installations “Fabric installations are becoming increasingly popular and a great way to add height, depth and, most importantly, texture to your wedding design,” says Rebecca. “Perhaps your venue has a high ceiling and you want to create a more intimate and romantic setting? Or maybe you want to add a bit of drama? If so, a fabric installation could be for you. There is so much versatility depending on your design and you can choose from a variety of fabrics and textures. I would always recommend hiring a stylist or fabric designer to achieve this look; have a look at Mia Sylvia (miasylvia.co.uk). A bonus of taking this approach is that they can also take care of table linen and napkins to avoid stock standard white linen as well as added touches such as silk bows or ribbons for your bouquets.” Rebecca Marie Weddings & Events Ohh So Wild

Unusual Reception Table Layouts “Wedding traditions are fast becoming a thing of the past; couples are now choosing which parts of the day are most important to them rather than what they think they should be doing on their special day. Over the past year we’ve seen alternative table plans and long tables having their moment – 2022 weddings will push this further and see couples experimenting with unusual reception table layouts, whether it’s sitting amongst your guests and enjoying every moment or experimenting with different shapes of tables. Squares and curves are interesting shapes to incorporate into your design; I love the thought of a curved table winding through an orchard or wooded Rebecca Marie Weddings & Events Courtney Marie Photography

inspiration from boho Hawaiian weddings? This is a great look if you’re having a marquee or tipi wedding as you can create big impact with the larger floral leaves of tropical foliage to dress a blank canvas space or bring in trees and plants to create a really lush feel. The tropical look is also a great opportunity to add in strong pops of colour such as orange or yellow which look beautiful against all the dark greens.”

Country Chic “This is one of my favourite ways to style a wedding and you can’t go wrong whatever time of year you’re getting hitched,” says Phoebe. “From springtime blooms bursting from the hedgerows and untamed long grasses and wildflowers in hazy summer to apple tree boughs in autumn – I draw a lot of inspiration from nature. I have designed a meadow tablescape installation with wildflowers and pops of joyful colour throughout to showcase my couple’s love for summer and picnics through to a cosy harvest feast featuring clashing colours fighting for space amongst hand-picked fruits and vegetables. Get your florist to go wild with seasonal flowers and foliage, and utilise any foraged, found or seasonal gifts that nature brings you during the season you’re getting married. I love a more muted pastel palette for winter and spring, and wildly bright and clashing in summer and autumn!”

“I like things a little ‘undone’ and full of personality,” says Phoebe. “I love creating an abundance of quirky accents, whether it’s potted plants and succulents layered down a table set off by sparkling crystal, a ‘sign our vinyl’ guest book table complete with a gramophone, a vintage typewriter for guests to leave messages or a beer pong table for some afternoon fun. My favourite weddings are always woven with details reflecting the personalities of the couple: for example, book lovers could gift their favourite books as favours or stack them high as table centrepieces, while sports lovers could have a table plan created from cricket bats. My own wedding was filled with all the things my husband and I love, from guitars and surfboard signs to pineapples with flamingos poking out for centrepieces. Surround yourselves with the things that bring you happiness and your wedding will look and feel just like you!”

Maximalism “Maximalism is a great trend for couples who picture something different for their wedding day and want the chance to go a bit wild,” says Phoebe. “The beauty of this theme is anything goes and there’s no such thing as too much colour or too many patterns, which makes things really easy to source. However, it’s good to create moments of calm with a plain white dress or cake for example, which can look really striking against the patterns.”
So-Now Styling
Styling Knots & Kisses Tableware Keeping It Vintage
Hazel Parsons of wedding styling and event hire specialists Keeping It Vintage shares her top tips for styling a modern wedding Go sustainable. Focus on sustainability, highlighting locally sourced products that emphasise your surroundings, drawing in light, natural colours, elements and shapes. And remember to hire vintage furniture and table décor rather than buying new. Consider the height. Elevate your ceremony using raised observation decks for guests and eye-catching, free-standing ceremony backdrops with floral designs to frame your location and you. Keep it simple. Use a focal point at your venue, such as a dramatic view, beautiful architecture or an eclectic piece of art sitting over a fireplace. Focus on statement furniture such as geometric ceremony arches, smooth round-edged ceremony backdrops, asymmetric flower displays and greenery. Keep it simple Darina Stoda Photography
with clean, clear lines for table décor. Think about texture. Create bespoke tablescapes layering colour with soft, breezy fabrics. Light, romantic colours make for an airy and heavenly backdrop. Finish with big blousy flowers. Add light. Never underestimate the impact of lighting. Lanterns or glass pillar vases create a low-lit, intimate feel for ceremonies.
Moon Gazey Hare
Enhance your tablescapes with minimalist tea lights in decorative votives and cut glass or add some colour with tall, tapered and naturally dyed dinner candles. Make guests feel special. Delight your guests with personalised storytelling on each place setting, customised drinks favours and individual food platters. Create a relaxed environment with mismatched colourful tableware. keepingitvintage.co.uk

Seasonal and local flowers are the most eco-friendly (and often, purse-friendly) option, so if you’d like a greener wedding in every way, today’s penchant for sustainably sourced blooms is the perfect solution. “I’ve seen a big increase in the requests for seasonal, local flowers,” observes Emma Hewlett (emmahewlett.co.uk). “It’s great to be able to support local growers but, with growing season not being in full swing until April/May, I would always suggest that couples aren’t too picky on flower variety and instead work with colour and let your florist choose the best blooms in that colour palette,” she advises. “I’m in the process of designing a ‘British’ wedding package which will allow more eco-conscious brides to have beautiful, seasonal flowers for their day.” Fuss Pots Amy Chapple Photography
Charlotte Isles at Floren Studio (florenstudio.co.uk) has also noticed this burgeoning trend toward eco florals. “Demand for British blooms is still rising with more awareness over eco-friendly practices used by florists. We use as many British grown flowers as possible as well as having a ‘no foam’ policy (the green floral foam which is a single-use plastic). We have been using eco-friendly alternatives in our designs

for years now but we are hearing more from our couples about this issue so the information is now filtering through.” “We are seeing couples keen to keep their impact on the environment to a Fuss Pots
minimum, with floral designs often led by being plastic and foam-free,” notes Hannah Burge from Fuss Pots (fusspots.co.uk). “Natural simple designs in vases are more in favour, as are our very own seasonal British flowers.”

Bright and bold The after-effect of Covid continues to impact various elements in wedding world – including the blooms. “Couples are moving towards deliciously bold and bright flowers!” announces Helen Edwards at The Velvet Daisy (thevelvetdaisy.co.uk). “Designs expressing a happy release from a constant flat-level and worries of life over the past few years. I’m finding couples want a blend of bright colours incorporating different flowers such as yellow roses, deep blue delphinium, orange tulips, red anemone and purple clematis with a background of lime foliage,” she says.
Emma Hewlett The Velvet Daisy
Charlotte is another aficionado of bright blooms. “A lot more couples are steering away from the traditional colour palettes such as pinks, creams and lavenders by choosing bright, vibrant colours,” she reports. “It may be that they are wanting even more of a celebration as we move away from Covid, but bright pinks, blues and yellows are all a hit – as well as unusual schemes such as pairing pastel tones with burnt oranges and deep reds.”

In the frame Floristry is being used to decorate all areas and aspects of weddings, extending from tabletops and pew ends into statement crowns, dancefloor arrangements and one of the biggest trends of the moment: backdrops. “Large-scale designs, in particular archways such as deconstructed archways and moon gates, are becoming even more popular,” says Charlotte. “Couples want their ceremony to be a centrepiece and these types of designs do just that. As most of them are moveable and can be used throughout the day, the idea of repurposing flowers is becoming more popular.” “This year I’m still seeing a lot of installation floral designs – lots of statement pieces for ceremony backdrops,” says Emma. “People are framing themselves at the end of the aisle, so we’re seeing the continued use of things like the hexagon arch.”

‘Queen Bee’ picks Structured and statement are also popular buzzwords in wedding flowers, and while foliage continues to dominate mood boards, there is an emerging movement toward “less foliage, more flower,” reveals Ellie May from Darling Buds (darlingbudsofel. com). “My clients’ inspirational imagery is focusing on the structure of the flowers and generally a heavier flower content, including tons of texture (which I love!) with accents of foliage.” Part of this trend is a penchant for more elaborate petals, as Ellie explains. “Specific flowers such as orchids are up there on the top luxury ‘Queen Bee’ flower list. Other structured blooms we have seen a lot of are varieties of blousy roses with the ‘peelback’ petal effect, as well as large daisy style flowers.” Charlotte is another fan of this particular trend. “We love blousy, scented, romantic blooms such as stocks (they smell divine!), delphiniums, double tulips – and dahlias are always a firm favourite. We are also introducing more unusual blooms such as The Velvet Daisy Verity Westcott Photography

Dramatic arrangements aren’t going anywhere either, with hanging installations, giant flower walls, chandeliers, oversized wreaths and floral tunnels all forming part of the bold floral design movement. “Statement pieces are popular with couples being more daring with their ideas, which I love,” says Emma. “Incorporating lighting is also a big trend – everyone loves an Edison lamp.”

Dried flowers Having claimed the spotlight over previous seasons, dried flowers look set to maintain their multidimensional and budget-friendly appeal. “I strongly feel that the

dried flower range will sneak into designs that create that multi-textured, whimsical vibe. Pampas and palm spears are here to stay!” asserts Ellie. One of the many benefits of dried flowers is that they can also be combined with fresh to elevate the textural quality, palette and interest of your arrangements, as Emma remarks: “There’s been a big increase in the use of dried florals – often combining fresh and dried together, while pampas grass is still proving popular for boho looks”.

Tropical touch From bright and colourful schemes to the type of flower itself, a more exotic aesthetic is trickling into this and next year’s wedding flowers, aimed at increasing the wow factor and sensorial escape. “Flowers such as butterfly ranunculi, anemones, David Austin roses and spray roses are the standout flower,” notes Hannah. “And brides are still drawn to large loose bouquets but are migrating slightly towards trailing designs, perhaps incorporating modern tropical twists such as orchids and anthuriums – both of which you can get in stunning warm and muted tones.”

big win-win for stylish impact!” says Hannah, who has seen a recent surge in demand for her tree and plant hire services. Potted plants also work well for more foliage-heavy or neutral coloured schemes, as Ellie further elaborates. “My colour style as a wedding florist tends to gravitate towards the neutral colour palette and so, naturally, clients are drawn in to match up to that style, but I am excited to be introducing some more earthy tones this year with a colour palette of sunsets, rust and amber accents making an appearance, as well as the classic muted, ivory, white and soft cream too.” “We are seeing couples inspired by the warmth of earthy tones coupled with romantic dusky blues and pinks, whilst continuing to choose a mix of delicate fresh flowers with natural dried grasses and materials,” says Hannah of how an eclectic and personal approach to the leading tones and looks are being combined into one gorgeously bespoke result.

for grand centrepieces and wow floral finishes if you’ve booked, for example, the ballroom of a grand hotel.
Think about food How to cater for large numbers? Buffets may mean long queues while sit-down meals will need a lot of waiting staff to ensure one guest isn’t beginning their prawn and caperberry skewer starter while another is taking their last mouthful of Eton mess. A perfect fit for a festival wedding, food vans are brilliant for large groups as you can offer a range of catering options so there isn’t one queue forming at one van. And talking of subsistence, maybe that lovely idea of a DIY bar isn’t going to work with large crowds, so bartenders may be a wise investment.
To favour or not to favour Painting hundreds of pebbles with the date of your big day is certainly thoughtful and will no doubt be well received by your guests, but do you have the time for personalised touches on this scale? Even the cheapest of ideas can be pricey once you start multiplying in the hundreds, so favours might be something you choose to forgo. Or perhaps make charitable donations on behalf of each guest and print the details for each table to let everyone know of your gesture.
On-the-day responsibilities If you have a large wedding, you’ll have no shortage of people to call on for roles such as bridesmaid, groomsman, ring bearer and the like. You’ll also have your pick of guests for cute roles such a confetti thrower and superhero procession leader. However, just because you’re having a large do doesn’t mean you have to find a role for absolutely everyone. Big dos can still be minimal on fuss, so if you simply want you and your other half taking centre stage and everyone else as guests, there are no rules to say you can’t.
The gift list Your guests will probably want to treat you to a gift of some sort on your special day. However, a large guest list could mean a lengthy gift list. Consider giving your guests options to choose from such as a gift list, charity donation, a contribution towards your honeymoon or even simply letting people know their presence is your present. Gifts from various avenues will ensure you don’t end up with more kitchen equipment than you can shake a whisk at!
Accommodation & travel Think about where your guests will be able to stay and how they will travel to your ceremony and venue. If you book that remote barn with the local three-bed B&B a mile away and nothing else as far as the eye can

see, you might find people struggle to make it. Large weddings need a range of accommodation options nearby so your guests can choose depending on budget, distance and transport links.
Meet & greet You don’t want to spend your wedding day working the room making sure you say hi to everyone while surreptitiously updating the clipboard that’s tucked underneath your gossamer skirt. Neither do you want to wake up the next day thinking: “Was Auntie Elmer or any of my uni friends there?” So how best to approach this? You may find separating the crowd could help: older guests, for example, may enjoy a traditional receiving line or you could schedule time to greet them all in a quiet zone at a certain point in the day. Guests of your age range could be invited to an after-party and under 10s could be welcomed by an entertainer so you can gather them in one place to say hello and release a confetti canon! A welcome dinner the night before for guests who have travelled a long way or you haven’t seen in ages might help them feel welcome. Or how about scheduling in times to visit each table before, during and after the wedding breakfast for a cheers and a selfie? And finally, talking of selfies, try to schedule in some time for a group shot. If that’s from way up high on a balcony to capture the scale of your do or even an ariel photograph, one thing’s for sure – it’s probably going to take more than a selfie stick to record this one!

HARRI AND DOUG by AMY CHAPPLE PHOTOGRAPHY amychapplephotography.co.uk
Simply the Best Harri and Doug’s autumnal wedding at The Oak Barn was filled with personal touches, from the colours to the menu and music March 2020 proved even more memorable than most for Harri and Doug, who became engaged on the Saturday before the first lockdown was announced. “We were going to Charmouth to drop some shopping off for my grandparents – we went to the beach first and Doug got down on one knee up on the cliff,” says Harri, who then promptly returned to her grandparents’ house to share the good news. The Oak Barn was the first venue that they viewed, and it was love at first sight. “We love Devon and knew that was where we wanted to tie the knot,” explains Harri, whose favourite colour, red, featured everywhere from the bridesmaids’ dresses and bridal shoes to the table napkins for their autumnal celebrations. “Doug really liked the idea of green tweed, so the main colours came from that, while I also sneaked in a lot of gold!” she says. The flowers were instrumental in achieving the look, reflecting the day’s palette of reds, dark pinks, creams and lots of greenery. Eye-catching hanging arrangements adorned the main barn, while “the chandelier was something else!” Harri notes. Beginning the day with a bridal brunch in the Linhay, Harri made her preparations before walking down the aisle to an acoustic version of Tina Turner’s Simply the Best, inspired by the television series Schitt’s Creek. After taking their vows, the newly-weds treated their guests to some of their favourite food and drinks, from the local cider and Prosecco served during the drinks reception to the wedding feast of pie and mash. “As a couple we are obsessed with pie!” laughs Harri. “Food was one of the most important elements for us and M Welsh Catering Services blew us away with the service and quality.” The speeches provided much merriment amongst guests, who devoured favours of mini bottles of Fireball inspired by a past Glastonbury festival Harri and Doug attended. “I think even my grandpa downed one during the speeches!” she recalls. Live music, sparklers, cheese toasties and an “impromptu fireman’s lift during the cake cutting” rounded off the day’s proceedings, leaving Harri and Doug to reflect upon their joy-filled day. “With our anthem of the day being Simply the Best, the band learned a cover to play as the last song of the evening which Doug organised as a surprise for me,” she reveals as one of her most treasured moments. “It’s never too early to plan or book something!” she advises other couples. “Involving family and friends is invaluable. And, on a practical level, we found it helpful to do a walk-through of our day from different perspectives to check we hadn’t forgotten anything.”

OLIVIA AND ANDREW by CLARE KINCHIN clarekinchinphotography.co.uk
Heaven in Devon Inspired by the peacocks at Coombe Trenchard, Olivia and Andrew’s wedding was a vibrant, musical and oh-so stylish affair Olivia and Andrew first met while working at the same company before she landed a new job and the pair lost contact. Fate intervened when she met up with a former colleague and friend for dinner – and Andrew came along. “The friend in question, Alice, was also one of my bridesmaids at the wedding!” smiles Olivia. During one of their biannual trips to the Lake District, Andrew proposed overlooking Lake Windermere while the couple hiked the Old Man of Coniston. “We took a secluded route up so there were no other people around, which made it feel extra special. About five minutes after he proposed a band of low cloud came in and we got soaked – classic Lake District weather!” laughs Olivia. Coombe Trenchard was the picturesque setting for their late summer black tie celebrations that saw a rich colour scheme inspired by their initial visit. “When we first went there, we were greeted by the resident peacocks – it was the gorgeous colours of the peacock’s plumage that inspired our final colour theme!” says Olivia. “Andy’s velvet dinner jacket was peacock blue and the bridesmaids’ dresses were a similar shade. We added some touches of antique gold with lots of candlesticks and dressed them with teal taper candles.” A neutral floral scheme of white flowers with a variety of foliage added texture and allowed the teal tones to truly pop. “It was very much ‘undone’ style,” comments Olivia. “We kept the rustic wedding breakfast trestle tables ‘naked’ with vases of greenery and the table settings with a ‘less is more’ approach.” Olivia pinpoints their musicians as another special feature of the day; they played an instrumental set during the drinks reception followed by an upbeat vocal set after the first dance. “We used to have date nights at the Bristol Fringe, which is renowned for its live music,” she explains. “Lee McCrory and PM LeGrand used to do regular sets and, before we even got engaged, I used to joke to Andy that I wanted them to play at our wedding one day. Fast-forward a couple of years and we made it happen!” “Walking out of the ceremony after being pronounced husband and wife,” Olivia says, reflecting on her favourite memory. “The nerves of saying the ‘I dos’ were over and we were about to spend the rest of the day with all our friends and family. We enjoyed a glass of bubbles alone and it was such a lovely ‘pinch me’ moment. We then walked out through the clocktower for the confetti throw and didn’t stop smiling from that moment on!” Her top planning tip? “Spreadsheet!” she proclaims. “Also, prioritise the suppliers that are likely to get booked up in advance so you can get some big things ticked off early on.”

ATHENA AND JAMES by MARIA BROOME mariabroomephotography.com
Great Escape Athena and James treated their guests to a beautifully personalised and thoughtful celebration amongst the treetops Athena and James’s paths first collided during a Burns Night dinner hosted by a mutual friend. Five years later, the couple were on a road trip in California when James proposed as dolphins leapt from the water during a sunset cruise in Santa Barbara. From the Californian coast to the leafy climes of North Devon, Tree Top Escape provided the most stunning retreat for their intimate wedding, which incorporated a palette of blush pink, red and a hint of tartan to reflect their Burns Night beginnings. With a sharp focus on style throughout the day, the groom’s party wore all-black velvet ensembles personalised with motorbike cufflinks (“as they’re all riders!”), while Athena dazzled in an Inbal Dror couture gown with sparkling embellishment. Every element of the celebrations was considered, with guests given rose quartz crystals for them to bestow their best wishes upon before placing them in a bowl when entering the ceremony. “We now have those crystals for good luck in our home,” says Athena. Guests were greeted with a glass of bubbly before congregating in The Nest to await Athena’s entrance. With her adorable Cavapoo as ring bearer, she walked the aisle to the dreamy vocals and acoustic sounds of musician Emma Stevens. The couple then took their vows before a moon gate dressed in fresh flowers, foliage and pampas grass and the idyllic countryside beyond. “We remembered all the loved ones who couldn’t make our special day, from having a ‘wish you were here’ photo wall to my sister and her husband watching our ceremony live on Facetime, all the way from New Zealand!” says Athena. The Prosecco flowed while Athena and James headed off for photos in the grounds before a threecourse supper was served in the Grill Haus. Seafood cakes and warm goat’s cheese, pear and toasted walnut salad primed tastebuds for the main courses of sirloin of beef, roasted cod, and spiced butternut squash, spinach, cashew nut and feta cheese pancake, all of which were served with winter slaw, rosemary and garlic potatoes, and warm panzanella salad. “Having such a small wedding (14 guests) meant we could interact with everyone throughout the day as well as making it feel like a personalised event to them,” says Athena, reflecting on their day. “I wanted to make sure they felt appreciated, especially my parents who helped with everything so we got them surprise gifts for their 42nd wedding anniversary which was the very next day. We had handwritten thank you notes waiting alongside takeaway cake slices and a personalised lottery ticket with numbers meaning something to each guest. We also sent a ‘Welcome to Devon’ cream tea hamper to my husband’s sister and fiancé who had travelled from afar.”

HANNAH AND MARCUS by MAXI PHOTOGRAPHY maxiphotography.com
Little Things After three postponements, Hannah and Marcus went all out with three days of fun and relaxed wedding festivities Hannah and Marcus first met through work when Hannah moved to Exeter for a new job. “We hit it off pretty much straight away,” she reflects. “A couple of games at Topsham RFC watching Marcus play later, and the rest is history!” After becoming engaged during a trip to Edinburgh two years after their fateful first meeting, the couple set about planning their wedding – but Covid meant their road to the altar was anything but straightforward. After being forced to postpone their wedding three times and their original venue closing, the couple settled on Huntsham Court as the backdrop to their handmade day. “We just wanted a chilled-out vibe with our family and friends together,” says Hannah of their vision for their country house celebrations. Booking the venue from Sunday to Wednesday allowed the couple an extended event with plenty of time to prepare for the big day and savour the setting afterwards. Hannah swept into nearby All Saints Church in a stunning ball gown carrying a colourful bouquet featuring tulips, her favourite flower. After the vows, guests gathered on the lawn for drinks, canapés and “amazing” live music by Adam in the Hat and Richard James. The mouth-watering flavours continued with a sharing platter feast including rare beef, pork and gammon with a range of sides, with Granny Gothards ice cream and cheeseboards for dessert. “Our first dance on the lawn!” announces Hannah when asked to reveal her fondest memory from the day. “Adam and Richard learnt our song for us – Little Things by Keywest – and we danced to this outside. We hadn’t heard their version of the song before we danced to it on our wedding evening, but they nailed it!” The band then kick-started the evening reception, which featured a supper of fish and chips and a packed dance floor until the early hours. “Us and about 10 close friends got a second wind and partied until 5.30am in the bar,” says Hannah. “It was so much fun, and something we talk about time and time again!” The following day, the newly-weds savoured some quality downtime with their loved ones: “a chilledout day playing cricket, croquet and nursing hangovers on the lawn in the sunshine,” recalls Hannah. “We had Harry’s Kitchen on-site, where our guests had options to purchase different street food options. It went down a storm!” “Don’t let it consume you!” she warns other couples of the potential perils of the planning process. “There is always something else to do or plan but try to take some time when you aren’t talking weddings. It is supposed to be fun, and not a chore!”

BECCA AND SCOTT by OLIVER HOLDER oliverholder.co.uk
Becca and Scott first locked eyes on each other during a night out in Manchester in 2012. “Scott was based in London serving in the military at the Olympics at the time, so we spent the majority of the first few months together living for the weekend, so we were able to see each other,” recalls Becca. On relocating to the Southwest, it didn’t take long for her to fall for a special corner of the Dorset coast. “Durdle Door was the first place in the Southwest I fell in love with,” she explains. “It is a place where we have many fond memories so it seemed an ideal spot to propose.” Scott popped the question after a dog walk across the clifftops and planning began in earnest for their wedding in the scenic setting of Upton Barn & Walled Garden. “As soon as we walked through the walled garden to see the rolling hills of the Devonshire countryside, Upton Barn seemed the perfect choice for us,” explains Becca. “As we were planning an autumnal wedding, we wanted to ensure that the interior matched the beauty of the exterior. Upton Barn did not disappoint. There was a stripped back elegance throughout the venue and we loved the richness of the traditional lime plastered walls contrasting with the industrial beams.” The couple took their cue from Scott’s military uniform for the aesthetic of the day. “We picked a black-tie theme to complement Scott’s uniform. We also loved the industrial vibes at Upton Barn and thought the two would work well together,” says Becca. Flowers brought a dreamy softness to the look of the day. “Lunaria was the main flower – it’s also called honesty which is perfect symbolism for a wedding,” she says. “As it’s a dried flower, I wanted a mixture of dried and fresh flowers that looked natural and organic in shape.” A stunning display featuring lunaria, gypsophila and roses made a picture-perfect backdrop for the couple to take their vows in the Cider Barn, while tables topped with pared-back florals and matt black candelabras complemented the industrial look of the Stable Barn. The sensory delights continued with a wedding feast featuring roast chicken, spinach and garlic purée, roasted shallots and truffled white wine sauce and salted caramel brownie. The entertainment was another standout feature, with Matt Bee’s jukebox guitar and Piano Factor, a request band playing mini grand pianos, captivating guests throughout the celebrations. With Scott being a pilot, references of flight were woven throughout the day, including a flypast after the ceremony. “Our friend wrote a reading called The Flight which she read during our ceremony,” says Becca. “She then orchestrated us being lifted during the evening dancing, captioning it on Instagram as The Flight!” Looking back on their wedding, Becca is replete with advice for others: “Make sure the day is about you and your partner. Focus the day on what you want out of it – Scott and I love to have fun and this was an important theme throughout our wedding.” “Prioritise your budget on the things that will have the biggest impact on your guests having a good time,” she continues. “For example, we chose to forgo favours and instead put the money into hiring the band.”

LAURA AND HUGH by FREEFORMIMAGES PHOTOGRAPHY freeformimages.co.uk
Into the Blue Relaxed vibes, paddleboarding and lots of fun were the hallmarks of Laura and Hugh’s wedding on the coast of North Devon A dating app led Laura and Hugh to their first meeting at a London pub back in 2017. “We quickly became inseparable with our love for the water and adventures,” says Laura. “I spent most weekends down on the south coast where Hugh was living.” Three years later, Hugh popped the question during a trip to Cornwall. “We went for a walk on the cliffs at Polkerris where Hugh got down on one knee and proposed, followed by a picnic breakfast in the sunshine overlooking the water,” says Laura. And the oceanloving pair chose Watermouth Cove, on the North Devon coast, as the backdrop for their wedding celebrations. “We wanted to get married by the sea and keep the theme beachy, rustic and relaxed with blues and yellows,” she explains. To help achieve the coastal look, Laura handcrafted a number of elements herself. “I enjoyed getting crafty and re-using things – I made oyster shell candles, we painted candles for the tables as an activity on my hen do and I sanded up and wrote on old fencing for our welcome and order of the day signs,” she says. From milk churn arrangements to the beautifully blooming pagoda overlooking the sea, the vibrant flowers followed Laura’s brief of being “in season and locally grown with a rustic, picked-from-thegarden look.” The barefoot ceremony took place in the sunshine on the clifftops, with Laura donning an embellished two-piece bridal gown in keeping with the relaxed mood. The personal, music-filled proceedings saw a performance from singer and saxophonist Lucy Harvey as well as the congregation singing All You Need Is Love. After the vows, guests tucked into sparkling wine and canapés, while the newly-weds climbed down the rocks to get on their paddleboards. “We paddled around the headland to all our guests cheering. There was a moment when we looked at each other and thought ‘we actually did it’ – what a great start to our married adventures together!” Laura jumped off her paddleboard into Hugh’s arms, walking up the beach to a shower of confetti. The wedding breakfast presented sharing platters of roast lamb and pork and a trio of desserts; the delights continued into the evening with a rum and gin bar and more deliciousness comprising fish and chips, barbecue lentil goujons and churros while live band The Nashville Heat performed. “Don’t be afraid to be different: if you like something, be decisive and go for it – and remember that it is your day to enjoy all your favourite things!” Laura imparts as words of advice. “Also, if you can, use local suppliers – we met so many amazing, talented people along our wedding planning journey.”

FAY AND WILL by HANNAH WILDE hannah-wilde.com
Festival Fever Classic Romance From glittered cheeks and vibrant blooms to handmade details, Fay and Will wowed their guests with a festival wedding to remember
Having lived in the same halls at Exeter University, Will decided to pop the question to Fay in the city where their love story had started. “We were living in Vancouver and had a trip planned back to the UK. Will had decided to propose in England so that we could celebrate with friends and family,” explains Fay. “After I ruined his plan to propose in Exeter, saying we didn’t have time for a detour, he proposed whilst we were having a walk around my parents’ field instead!” The couple set about planning a relaxed and super-colourful wedding. “We’d always dreamed of hosting our own mini festival and my uncle kindly said we could use his lovely field on a hill overlooking Dartmoor,” says Fay. Hiring two giant tipis, a series of bell tents and magical festoon lighting, the scene was set for Fay and Will’s wedding festival, which they decorated with handmade details and lots of colour. “The bridesmaids wore burnt orange and the groomsmen matched with ties, but otherwise we went for all the colours when it came to flowers, bunting and decorations!” A vibrant carnival of pom-poms and bunting – handcrafted by the mums – and an “incredible” hanging hoop dried flower installation added to the party vibe. After taking their vows, folk duo Harbottle and Jonas kick-started the merriment as guests enjoyed beer, fizz and nibbles while playing lawn games and hitting the party tent, complete with fancy dress, a Polaroid station, sweetie counter and glitter station. “Half the guests had glitter on about 10 minutes after the ceremony!” laughs Fay. In keeping with the laidback mood of the day, the menu comprised grazing boards (which the couple organised themselves with the help of friends) and Will’s mum’s chocolate fridge cake followed by fish and chips in the evening and s’mores around the tipi fire. And it wouldn’t be a festival without dancing into the small hours – Harbottle and Jonas filled the floor for their evening set followed by a silent disco. “Seeing everyone singing along to Westlife at the end of the silent disco was high up there on the greatest moments of the day!” says Fay. “We’re so glad we bucked tradition and did things our way,” she enthuses. “Our celebrant, Sally Ingle, made the ceremony so relaxed and personal to us. My bridesmaid read a poem she’d written to kick off dinner proceedings and we had the drinks flowing before the ceremony even started. There were no rules, we just wanted everyone to have an amazing time!” “There was a heap of work involved in a DIY wedding, but it was totally worth it,” she continues. “We’d recommend booking an on-the-day coordinator so that once the day arrives all you have to do is enjoy it!”

Love story.
Tell a story with your seating plan, it might be the story of your adventure together; a timeline of when you met your guests; different years and an anecdote of each year for each table, or the story of where you’ve travelled with images from each holiday and a map as your table plan. Sophie
