HUW STEPHENS Presents in assoc. with CERRD CYMRU (TUE)...... 20

FOREWORD Of all the places for a stunning new singer to announce her arrival, a friendly, but garish-looking Tex Mex restaurant – complete with a wholly bemusing 70s style water feature - is possibly one of the unlikeliest. But that’s where we staged the first ever BBC SXSW showcase which I was involved with back in 2008. Welcome to Rio’s where the backstage is strewn with boxes: some of them, of the ‘dressing up’ variety. Bouncing between them, is a red-haired singer, who’s first on the bill, and fizzing with nerves and energy. About half an hour later, she wandered on stage, in front of a packed house, and unveiled a whole new world of provocative, intense and funny songs, in a set which would end with said singer launching herself into the aforementioned, palm-tree be-decked artificial pond.

F O R E W O R D

It was thrilling stuff. British music paper New Musical Express dubbed the gig the best moment of that year’s SXSW – and off the back of her set, she was invited to tour Europe supporting MGMT. Enter Florence & the Machine! And I admit, even I was a bit surprised by how good she was. But it’s moments like that – watching Florence melting hearts on her first trip to the States – which live with you for a very long time. Fast forward seven years and I’m delighted that the BBC is back at SXSW again this time at the British Music Embassy with another showcase put together by us humble radio DJs, and run by BBC Introducing with the PRS for Music Foundation. BBC Introducing is a unique division of the BBC championing unsigned and under the radar bands, helping them with advice and airplay – and giving the best of them the opportunity to play at live events including all the leading British festivals. It’s open to anyone and has already provided a springboard for Florence, Alt-J and Jake Bugg among many others. In fact last year our Introducing showcase at the British Music Embassy in Austin brought you a band who became the biggest new group in the UK last year: Royal Blood. This year, we’ve set our standards equally high with a night that brings together a selection of musical styles from six of the acts who we think deserve a bigger platform and a break in America. We’ll be backing this up with radio shows presented by myself on 6Music and Radio 1’s tireless new music champion Huw Stephens – not to mention Dermot O’Leary on Radio 2. We hope you enjoy this gig – and find time to check out the rest of the British contingent at the British Music Embassy and other venues at SXSW this year. And if you see us around, please feel free to come up and say hello. It would be nice to meet you. – STEVE LAMACQ

UK TRADE & INVESTMENT L.A. Presents SKINNY LISTER PAPER AEROPLANES

SKINNY LISTER Skinny Lister are not your average, modern day, gentrified English folk group. Fronted by Dan Heptinstall and Lorna Thomas, a vocalist with a lusty cackle and flirtatious presence, the London based 5-piece hail from across England. Borrowing the nickname from the Lister family, pioneers in the use of anaesthetic, the band have grown naturally and organically over the past few years.

Paper Aeroplanes Last year Paper Aeroplanes took their stunning concoction of Dream-Pop to over one hundred venues, selling out at London's Union Chapel as well as many other venues across the UK and Germany. In April Paper Aeroplanes will release their third album “J O Y” produced by Mason Neely (Sufjan Stevens) followed by an extensive tour of the UK/EU with their five-piece band. rhi@morgan-bell.com paperaeroplanesmusic.com

More than Conquerors Belfast DIY alt-punk band More Than Conquerors have opened for the likes of The 1975, Jimmy Eat World, Twin Atlantic and Feeder. They released their debut “Everything I’ve Learnt” on Small Town America in 2013 and are currently crafting the follow up which they will release on their own Oil Tape imprint. kris@morethanconquerors.co.uk morethanconquerors.co.uk

Go Wolf US label Oh La La picked up their infectious track “Talk To You” after a chance meeting at SXSW last year and with another killer cut “Voices” included on Kitsuné Maison 15 it is clear that this is a new band with bags of potential. UNTIL THE RIBBON BREAKS Having opened the year supporting London Grammar on a US run, 2015 is already looking like another monster year for UTRB. The band, fronted by Cardiff’s very own Peter Winfield, have already brought their brand of avant R’n’B electronica to not only The Embassy in 2014 but also the masses opening for Lorde. eloise@atcmanagement.com untiltheribbonbreaks.com

CATFISH AND THE BOTTLEMEN 2015 is going to be this band’s year: with two sold out Brixton shows coming up in the fall, they arrive in Austin with wind in their sails. The band’s debut LP went top 10 in the UK and interest is now picking up stateside with a Letterman appearance in January and a full US tour around SXSW, many shows long since sold out. neil@atcmanagement.com catfishandthebottlemen.com

SHURA One of the BBC’s picks for 2015, multi-talented West London native Shura appeared almost out of nowhere midway through 2014 with her post-breakup anthem “Touch” which took the blogosphere by storm. Her mix of XX meets “Immaculate Collection” subsequently earned her a major label deal and and will undoubtedly be one of the hottest tickets at SXSW. jp@atcmanagement.com weareshura.com

KATE TEMPEST A renowned and award winning poet (who’s worked with the RSC), she returned to the music world with the release “Everybody Down” via Big Dada. Mercury nominations aren’t handed out like sweets, and there was certainly none more deserving in 2014 than this uniquely gifted rapper.

EAST INDIA YOUTH A fellow Mercury prize nominee for his 2014 LP “Total Strife Forever”, East India Youth has recently announced his new LP “The Culture of Volume” (XL Recordings) which is set to continue in the vein of his experimental-indie euphoric leftfield pop debut. andy@fivethousand.co.uk eastindiayouth.co.uk

The People The Poet Their epic rock debut L.P. “The Narrator” is written entirely around personal life stories sent into the band by their fans. These stories cover a wide spectrum of experiences and emotions, through the joy of fatherhood, to the pain of losing a parent, and the emotive 2-part tribute to two fans’ experiences of the fight against cancer. jamie.osman@redlightmanagement.com thepeoplethepoet.com

MUSIC FROM WALES Wales, land of castles, coastline and culture. This small nation with a big voice has long been celebrated for its musical heritage – exporting hip-swivelling musical heavyweights on an international scale since the sixties! These days the coolest bands celebrate their Welsh roots; from Bullet for My Valentine, Funeral for a Friend, The Joy Formidable, Gruff Rhys to Cerys Matthews, Cate Le Bon, Drowners, Marina and the Diamonds, Los Campesinos and Joanna Gruesome.

BRITISH MUSIC AT SXSW Presents BLITZ KIDS MALLORY KNOX FATHERSON GOD DAMN MORE THAN CONQUERORS 26

GOD DAMN

27

BLITZ KIDS “Good Youth” released in January, is Blitz Kids’ first full length for Red Bull Records. The album was recorded by Goldfinger’s John Feldman (Panic At The Disco! / All Time Low), who brings some Californian sunshine to the band’s customary british grit. It’s an album that few wouldn’t immediately brand a bona-fide breakthrough-in-waiting and is a testament to their gradual rise through the ranks of British rock bands.

W E D N E S D A Y

julie@visiblenoise.com blitzkidsofficial.com

Mallory Knox Their first album “Signals” established the band as one of the hottest new British rock bands, with their follow-up album, “Asymmetry” produced by Gil Norton and out in October 2014 (#16 on the UK Top 40) “Asymmetry” is a supremely ambitious album in every sense of the word and it’s destined to build on the recent British rock renaissance. stuart.gili-ross@rawpowermanagement.com malloryknox.com

Fatherson The stadium sized rock sounds of their second single “I Like Not Knowing” earned them over a dozen prime time BBC Radio 1 plays from the likes of Huw Stephens, Nick Grimshaw and Zane Lowe, with the latter calling them his “new favourite band”. Supports include Idlewild, Frightened Rabbit and Panic! At The Disco while Summer 2014 saw them play to 7.5k people at T in the Park. worldofbruce@aol.com facebook.com/fathersonband

SOAK

31

SPRING KING Hailing from Manchester, this garage pop band began life recording in a disused bathroom in 2013. Gaining almost instantaneous industry attention the band were one of NME’s top 10 new bands of 2014 and in September released the “Demons” EP via Transgressive / Paradyse. claire@transgressiveproducers.com facebook.com/springkingmusic

W E D N E S D A Y

LITTLE SIMZ When her “Blank Canvas” mixtape premiered on JAY-Z’s Life+Times blog in the fall of 2013 Little Simz took a giant step towards the big time. She’s subsequently been lauded by Complex, XXL, Schoolboy Q, Andre 3000 and Kendrick Lamar which has translated into mainstream attention from Variety, The Guardian and The Independent as well as strong support from the BBC. versetti@theirnewreligion.com littlesimz.co

JACK GARRATT A stunning mix of low key electronics and haunting vocals, the hirstute Jack Garratt is something of a virtuoso. A well received EP on Island, sold out London shows and supports with big hitters like Ben Howard all seem like building blocks for something very solid indeed. sam.faulkner@turnfirstartists.com facebook.com/jackgarrattmusic

32

SOAK When she’s not busy skating, delicate tales of adolescence, family and friendship are Bridie Monds-Watson a.k.a. SOAK’s stock in trade. She caught the attention of Chvrches playing at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in 2013, who subsequently released a single on their label. Fast forward to March 2015 and she has featured in the BBC Sound of 2015 and inked a deal with Rough Trade.

GENGAHR North London quartet Gengahr are one of the hottest new bands from the UK of the last 12 months. Cut from the same cloth as Vampire Weekend, Alt-J and a prog-free MGMT the band also bring a certain classic 90’s jangle to their sun soaked sound. kirsten@eastcitymanagement.com facebook.com/gengahrband

BLOSSOMS Their sound is a moody blend of psych-pop riffs and vocal melodies; shimmering cymbals and delayed guitars create a stylish film noir meets 60’s aesthetic. Is pshychedelia back? Temples’ barnstorming show at The Embassy last year suggests it is so. Check out their James Skelly (The Coral) produced monster “Blow” if you need further proof. conrad@sjmconcerts.com blossomsband.co.uk

BBC INTRODUCING This year, BBC Introducing will be descending upon Austin once again to deliver a showcase packed full of acts we believe are destined for great things. BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 6 Music will all be broadcasting from the festival throughout the week and thanks to BBC Music, we’re putting brand new unsigned, undiscovered and under the radar musicians at the forefront of what we do. Alongside putting on bands at festivals such as Glastonbury, Reading / Leeds and T In The Park, BBC Introducing are now, due to a new partnership formed with PRS for Music Foundation, committed to providing more opportunities for new British acts internationally. SXSW has a special place in both mine and BBC Introducing’s heart as it’s where we first showcased Florence + The Machine back in 2008 and last year Royal Blood performed an unforgettable set for us at The British Music Embassy. We can’t wait to show you our new favourite acts. – STEVE LAMACQ

Carl Barât & The Jackals “Let It Reign” released last month on Cooking Vinyl is a debut of sorts, but only under this moniker. Circa Waves Liverpool indie quartet Circa Waves announced their arrival with double A side “Get Away/Good For Me” on Transgressive/Kissability at the tail end of 2013. Their next single was a Zane Lowe “Hottest Record In The World” on his BBC Radio 1 show, with a slot on the NME Awards tour following shortly after. Their debut full length “Young Chasers” is out on Virgin/EMI on March 30th. matt@prolifica.co.uk circawaves.com

BLACK RIVERS Twins Jez & Andy Williams are perhaps best known as two thirds of chart topping Mancunian indie legends Doves (and before that dance act Sub Sub) After Doves went on hiatus in 2010 the brothers initially took a break from each other, but old habits die hard and it wasn’t long before the electro psychedelia duo that is Black Rivers was born.

Dry The River Closing 2014 with their biggest show to date at London’s Forum, Stratford folk-rockers Dry The River arrive at SXSW touring their new album “Alarms in the Heart”. Brolin Brolin arrives at SXSW hot on the heels of his killer track “Swim Deep”, its excellent video and a sold out London show. The handful of lovely tracks he’s dropped so far have an understated, introspective quality to them: smart beats allied with simple silky smooth vocals.

Go Wolf US label Oh La La picked up their infectious track “Talk To You” after a chance meeting at SXSW last year and with another killer cut “Voices” included on Kitsuné Maison 15 it is clear that this is a new band with bags of potential. File under catchy, smooth, slick indie-pop. wigwammanagement@gmail.com facebook.com/LOVEGOWOLF

BLACKJACK LONDON + AIM Present RIVAL CONSOLES BOXED IN GHETTS ONLY REAL JUCE CHARLOTTE OC 50

CHARLOTTE OC

RIVAL CONSOLES From the Erased Tapes stable (home to contemporary composers Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm) comes electronica producer Ryan Lee West. He creates atmosphere and space whilst exploring waves of sound and rhythm, and the power of colour. But unlike some other dance producers, Ryan creates music to structure itself around a pulse, rather than the pulse being the defining point. robert@erasedtapes.com facebook.com/rivalconsoles

F R I D A Y

Boxed In Intellectual without being pretentious, wideranging yet accessible and they unite club and indie-rock crowds in a way that few can do. Inspired by the motorik rhythms of Can, Cluster and Neu! as well as house producers like Pépé Bradock and Theo Parrish. Their single “Mystery” was recently A-listed at BBC 6Music as well as being Huw Stephens’ single of the week. feedyfrizzi@gmail.comhectorbizerk.com boxedinmusic.com

GHETTS After meeting widespread positivity and critical kudos for RWAC, Ghetts was nominated for a BET Award for Best International Act, won the category of ‘Hardest Working Artist’ at the AIM Awards last month, and has been nominated for three MOBO Awards; Best Male, Best Grime and Best Album. phil@disruptltd.com ghetts.com

Only Real Signed to EMI in the UK and Harvest in the US, West Londoner Niall Galvin is Only Real; swirling psychedelic pop, with woozy guitar lines perfectly complemented by Niall’s unique delivery. Lo-fi and real, casual and loose, mixed with real swagger.

JUCE JUCE: Georgia, Chalin and Cherish, a selfproclaimed ‘girl band ting’ who over the past twelve months have become one of the most hotly tipped new bands. Brimming with musical panache as both songwriters and performers, JUCE make fresh, groove-laden pop that’s set to be one of 2015’s smartest sounds. joey@woofmusic.com tastethejuce.co.uk

Charlotte OC Struck by a eureka moment in Berlin’s pulsating Berghain club, Charlotte O’Connor embarked on the second lease of her pop career. Now with a couple of great EPs under her belt for Harvest an album will shortly follow, which promises to be a hallucinatory 21st century soul epic. ed@tapmgmt.com charlotteoc.com

SHOWCASING SCOTLAND Scotland’s contemporary music scene now has a genuinely global impact and is widely respected for its innovation across genres. From indie legends Belle & Sebastian, Franz Ferdinand and Mogwai; rock titans Biffy Clyro and Twin Atlantic; dance guru Calvin Harris and Mercury-winning upstarts Young Fathers; to soulful songwriters Paulo Nutini and King Creosote – Scotland punches well above its weight. This year we continue the trend as 7 eclectic acts showcase their wares under the Texan sun, in association with Creative Scotland. Melancholy indie kings, The Twilight Sad are no strangers to SXSW but return armed with songs from their 4th, most successful album to date. Also revisiting Austin are reverb-soaked shoegazers Holy Esque, ahead of their debut album release. Bringing their carefully-crafted, emotive rock stateside for the first time is Fatherson, looking to replicate their fervent home-grown fanbase. And if you like your guitars from a post-hardcore perspective then catch the brutal, melodic assault of United Fruit. Politics and partying find a home within Hip-Hop, and Glaswegian rabble-rousers Hector Bizerk certainly fly the flag for insurrection and good times with their full band and MC attack. For whiskyfuelled heartache and righteous anger, gravel-voiced songwriter Dave Arcari is your man; and all those in search of music with wide-screen vision and emotional pull, then SAY Award nominees Roddy Hart & the Lonesome Fire are here to deliver exactly that. Join us for a dram and a knees-up to see what Scotland has to offer in 2015. VIC GALLOWAY – BBC Scotland Broadcaster, journalist and author

THE TWIGHLIGHT SAD

MUSIC FROM YORKSHIRE Leeds is the largest city in the region with key music venues attracting global artists. It has given us Kaiser Chiefs, Pigeon Detectives and Corrine Bailey Ray to name but a few. Further south in the region, Sheffield upholds its musical reputation with household names like Arctic Monkeys, Def Leppard, Richard Hawley and Pulp. Rather than simply take our word that music from Yorkshire is some of the best, come and listen for yourself! It can be heard at the British Music Embassy this year with performances from Marmozets and Brolin.

MARMOZETS

57

Y O R K S H I R E

Yorkshire is England’s largest county based in the North of the country and stretches from the picturesque East Coast over the rugged North Yorkshire Moors towards Manchester and the North West, incorporating the regions’ biggest cities of Leeds and Sheffield. The music from Yorkshire is as varied as its landscape.

THE INTERNATIONAL SHOWCASE FUND The International Showcase Fund, managed by PRS for Music Foundation and supported by UKTI, Musicians’ Union, Arts Council England and British Underground, provides financial support in the form of grants to UK acts that want to perform at key international tastemaker festivals such as SXSW. Since 2006 we have helped around 400 UK acts take their first steps into new international territories. In the last 4 years over 85% of the artists we’ve funded have returned to the UK with important business results such as global record deals, international bookings and sync deals. The International Showcase Fund ensures that the very best talent in the UK has the opportunity to take their music to the international stage. This year we are excited to support Bad Breeding, Ben Ottewell, Boxed In, Brolin, East India Youth, God Damn, Jay Prince, Kate Tempest, Kero Kero Bonito, Mallory Knox, PC Music, Redinho and Rival Consoles. www.prsformusicfoundation.com

BRITISH MUSIC AT SXSW Presents BAD BREEDING ARROWS OF LOVE HOLY ESQUE UNITED FRUIT THE PEOPLE THE POET 60

ARROWS OF LOVE

61

Bad Breeding Four angry men from nowheresville UK raging against the palpable discontent of their surroundings. Their brand of punk rock is very much rooted in British indie but there is more than a hint of early Ceremony or even Black Flag about it all. Visceral, engaging and immediate, we’ll certainly be taking the windows off the venue before they go on. didz@quietusmanagement.com badbreeding.com

S A T U R D A Y

arrows of love Arrows of Love are a 5-piece band from London. With a recently released debut album under their belt (8/10 Line of Best Fit, 10/10 Whispering & Hollering, etc) thru London’s notorious 1-2-3-4 Records, the band press into 2015 working on a 2nd album with legends Jim Sclavunos of Grinderman/ Bad Seeds and Bob Weston of Shellac. arrowsoflove.co.uk sean@seanmclusky.com

Holy Esque Epic Glasgow quartet Holy Esque make industrial, powerful, anthemic (yet still tender) indie-rock that is most definitely post-something. The band has been bubbling under for the last year or two now, with a couple of excellent releases (including the awesome “Sovereign”) and some even better concerts, opening for the likes of Augustines. Big love for single “Silences” came from John Richards at KEXP, and new material is expected in April. sadowski@beyondthefrequency.com holyesque.tumblr.com

United Fruit A post-punk band from Glasgow Rock City. They’ve evolved somewhat from their more abrasive hardcore origins to a rather more ethereal and expansive sound which has earned them plays from BBC R1’s rock show, Introducing, BBC Scotland and XFM.

NME + PRS FOR MUSIC Present GIRL BAND HECTOR BIZERK HAPPYNESS HINDS ULTIMATE PAINTING HONEYBLOOD 64

HONEYBLOOD

Girl Band (IE) A techno loving indie four piece from Dublin, now signed to legendary London label Rough Trade worldwide. Raucous, glitch but also groovy, these boys like to mix it up. Widely tipped and backed by the heavyweights. Watch this space. girlband3@gmail.com girlband.ie

S A T U R D A Y

Hector Bizerk A left-field four piece hip-hop troupe from Glasgow, Hector Bizerk began life in 2011. They’ve opened for such luminaries as Wu-Tang, EPMD and MF DOOM, played T in the Park twice, and are widely tipped as one to watch for 2015. hiddengroundmanagement@gmail.com hectorbizerk.com

Happyness After forming in early 1973 the band went on hiatus, pending their births and the sufficient progress of the affordable digital audio interface market. Regrouping in 2013, they commenced writing and recording, first in a railway arch and then a disused church. They settled on the name Happyness sometime in November 2013 and subsequently released an eponymous EP mixed by one Ed Harcourt. irobinson@giftmusic.uk.com happynessuk.tumblr.com

HINDS (ES) The threat of legal action by a band not even called Deers saw the band begin 2015 under the newly minted Hinds moniker. A top 10 pick in the NME’s new bands issue, the all female Madrid based quartet plays the kind of garage-surf-rock with which the city’s scene is synonymous, and are “gloriously free of any kind of pretension.” (NME)

Ultimate Painting Ultimate Painting are Veronica Falls’ James Hoare and Jack Cooper of Mazes. They’re a band. Initial plans to record a couple of tracks together became an EP and then a full album which will be out via Chicago’s Trouble In Mind (Ty Segall / Mikal Cronin) this coming fall. dearultimatepainting@gmail.com ultimatepainting.tumblr.com

Honeyblood An effortlessly charming Glaswegian duo, Shona and Stina are none too distant musical cousins of Best Coast, Haim and Frankie Rose, but with some rather darker PJ Harvey-esque undertones. The FatCat signed band arrive in 2015 with a sold out London NME Awards show and a run of US dates with 2:54 and Belle & Sebastian. littlewars@gmail.com yumhoneyblood.tumblr.com

NME I’m delighted to be back at SXSW with NME once again. For me, as New Music Editor of the magazine and NME.com, this is the place where the whole year truly gets going. It’s where rising bands are pushed overground for the first time, and where undiscovered gems are found too. Basically, if you’re good, then you can become great at SXSW. The most impressive set I’ve put on for NME here has to be last year’s late night show by Fat White Family. By Saturday evening they were already one of the world-of-mouth sensations of the week, and watching them lay waste to a heaving, mesmerised crowd that spilled way out onto the street outside Latitude 30 was stupidly exhilarating.

S A T U R D A Y

This year we’ll have more of the same on our stage, with a handpicked bill that focuses on everything that’s exciting, weird and wonderful about music from this side of the pond right now… MATT WILKINSON – NME New Music Editor

PRS PRS for Music reactivates its partnership with NME once again to showcase some great ‘Best of British’ music at this year’s SXSW. NME will be bringing along Honeyblood, Ultimate Painting, Hinds FKA Deers, Happiness, Hector Bizerk, and Girl Band. PRS for Music has global presence, supporting members from the UK and across the globe, and shares NME’s passion and commitment to the music industry. SXSW is a well-recognised and applauded platform for showcasing British acts to the US and the rest of the world. The British Embassy showcase is a fantastic opportunity to show off how good a band can be.

MODERATED BY Katie Weatherall (British Underground) SPEAKERS: Hattie Collins (i-D Magazine), Matt Thorne (GRM Daily), Ghetts

TV Blanket Licences: Stitch Up or Opportunity? FRIDAY MARCH 20 / 3:30pm – 4:30pm Room 8C, Austin Convention Center The major UK TV channels have instant access to nearly all of the world’s music under blanket agreements with music collecting societies. Is this a great opportunity for songwriters and artists to promote their music, as it provides a democratic platform where all music receives equal reward when it is used in television? Or do blanket licenses represent a loss of control, a missed opportunity to command individual synch fees. While blanket licenses in the UK generate significant revenue for music creators, they also generate confusion and debate. MODERATED BY Peter Bradbury (Head of Music @ Sky) SPEAKERS: Nicky Bignell (BBC), Gareth Smith (Big Deal Music), Chris Meehan (Sentric Music)

U K

Over a decade since the East London sound was airborne, grime music once again finds itself in a healthy place. In the UK, scene stalwarts like Skepta and JMA (Boy Better Know), key figures in the scene then, are again charting. Similarly, young MCs Stormzy and Novelist are pushing grime into new territory. Although the US market was slow to catch on to grime’s early incarnation, in this post-hip-hop EDM favoured age, heavily grime-influenced production can be heard on releases by US artists from Danny Brown to Kelela while the likes of Kanye West and Drake have tipped their hat in Boy Better Know’s direction. Could Grime 2.0 finally take UK street culture global?
