Foreword: My love for British Music began as a little boy. It was nurtured by and truly flourished at Chrysalis Records in the 1980’s. That love and respect expanded from British Music, and now includes the British Music industry. My dream comes full circle with our London office and Team led by Sam Rumney. So, I welcome all of you to SXSW and the exciting city of Austin, Texas.

Foreword

The British Music Embassy showcases have the reputation of marking the next ‘who’s who’ in the industry. Talent scouts, publishers, music writers, DJs, bloggers, programmers, agents, festival bookers and more regard the showcase as the key platform to springboard an artist’s career to the global stage. I have vivid and fond memories of walking into packed British Music Embassy shows at SXSW and being mesmerized by new talent. Some of those SXSW moments have included discovering and falling in love with artists such as Mumford & Sons, Arctic Monkeys, Royal Blood, Florence & The Machine, Jake Bugg, Jungle, Wolf Alice, and more. Each year SXSW becomes more global as attendance from the digital services, press and radio expands internationally. Streaming is now making the world smaller and smaller, yet more inclusive than ever. By the time you’re reading this, I hope you’ve ‘trained well’. I mean, gotten some rest and brought some comfortable shoes or trainers, because you’ll be walking and standing a lot. SXSW is all about The Music, The People, The Food. I would recommend renting an electric bike. It has become a must for transportation around Austin no matter where you’re from — UK or US. Glassnote rents ours from Electric Bike Co: Rocket Electrics. It is so cool to be walking or riding on your bike when you spot Huw Stephens or Dermot O’Leary or George Ergatoudis on 6th Street. You must go to Waterloo Records on 6th Street for one of the best collections in the world, as well as their live showcases. 6

The Food – to feel like a local, join the Austin BBQ battle between Franklin’s BBQ (if you’re willing to stand in line that long!) and The Salt Lick in Driftwood (they’re for real and, if you’re smart, you go to the local HEB grocery store and buy several bottles to take home or pay double to buy it at their airport terminal location!). If you’re pressed for time, it’s always fun to go to Iron Works BBQ on Red River. And, if you’re in the mood for sushi, don’t sleep on Uchi (our band, Phoenix’s favorite). The Bats… You must go to the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge, which spans over the Colorado River (that’s what Lady Bird Lake is now). The bridge is home to the largest urban bat colony in the world. It seems like over a million bats live underneath this bridge, so get there exactly at dusk, and you’ll see the bats emerge. It is breathtaking.

My favorite hotels to hang out and have a drink or meal at would be The Hotel Saint Cecilia and The Hotel San Jose. This is the way it should be done, and as a Music person you’ll feel right at home. Austin is a special place to get your first pair of real boots. I would recommend Heritage Boot on South Congress and Jerry Ryan is a Dublin native. Some Artists to watch out for this year at the British Music Embassy are Clean Cut Kid — widely supported by BBC Radio 1 and Annie Mac, Declan McKenna, Frances, Honne, Fickle Friends, and Isaac Gracie. We hope to see you at some of our shows, which include Lawrence Taylor from England! Also, CHVRCHES, Aurora, The Strumbellas, Baio, Tor Miller, and Oberhofer. Our Team will be there to greet you. Please say hi to me when you’re there! No matter how late the night goes I can always be found at 8am on the running path at Lady Bird Lake. If you decide to make The British Music Embassy your base, you’ll be well-served. Best of luck to all of you and have FUN!

Daniel Glass

British Music At SXSW Presents:

• HOOTON TENNIS CLUB ----------------------------------10pm • THE SPOOK SCHOOL -------------------------------------9pm

12

Hooton Tennis Club They sing about the small details of life. Theirs is a world in which curious observational lyrics abound; poetic riddles and wry nuggets that contort the banality of everyday existence while never succumbing to cynicism. Quite the opposite in fact: Hooton’s songs are bathed in sunlight, and find romance where others see squalor. daniel_mcevoy@me.com facebook.com/hootontennisclub

The Spook School

Sunday

Signed to the legendary underground indie label Fortuna Pop, The Spook School are an Edinburgh quartet that evoke memories of C86 and The Buzzcocks. Devoid of pretence, gloriously noisy and always fantastically enjoyable. spookschool@live.com thespookschool.com

Violet Skies

Monday

Widescreen, sensuous, evocative pop from Chepstow in Wales. In her short career to date she’s already played Glastonbury BBC Introducing Stage, Eurosonic and a BBC Showcase at The Great Escape. Violet’s tracks have been played by Huw Stephens on Radio 1, Jamie Cullum on Radio 2 and widely supported across BBC Radio Wales, the NME, and many blogs. grant@listentothismgt.com iamvioletskies.com

The Crookes These longtime Embassy indie favourites from Sheffield are “one of the most hardworking and prolific bands of the underground” according to Steve Lamacq and we’d be inclined to agree. “The Crookes are a band that show what happens when pop music goes right.” - Live4Ever pennyblackham@googlemail.com thecrookes.co.uk

Ciaran Lavery He may wield an acoustic guitar and write achingly beautiful universal truths, but he couldn’t be further from the sensitive singersongwriter archetype. Ciaran has his own singular sound, one that assimilates myriad influences from Americana to hip-hop, articulated in a grainy delivery with a deep soul impulse over processed beats and sumptuous strings. lyndon@championsoundmusic.com ciaranlaverymusic.com

Trackd’s pioneering music mobile app is in the running to take Austin by storm as a finalist for the best app in the Music & Audio Innovation category. With over 50,000 downloads and 30,000 active users (and counting), the app, which was launched just last year, is transforming the way musicians come together to create music. A simple, to-the-point user interface enables musicians to multitrack their ideas and collaborate on songs with total ease. The app aims to build a buzzing, global community of creators providing them with the ability to connect with other artists at the swipe of a finger; meaning the opportunity to discover potential collaborators is boundless. Trackd is putting on a show at SXSW 2016 via the British Music Embassy. Head over to Latitude 30 on Monday night, then download Trackd for free to hear exclusive recordings made by some of the acts.

21 Loyle Carner

Loyle Carner One of the most promising names in UK hip-hop, Loyle has enjoyed considerable support from Radio 1, Radio 1Xtra, and was A-listed at 6Music. Further afield he’s had love from Fader and Majestic Casual and has collaborated with the likes of Maverick Sabre and Kate Tempest as well as opening for Joey Bada$$ and Atmosphere. ollierussian@gmail.com loylecarner.com

Clean Cut Kid

Liverpool’s hottest new band describe their songs as “soulful pop ballads, washed in Mersey water.” They arrive in Austin on the back of a new single “Pick Me Up” on their own Babe Magnet imprint (via Polydor), a Radio 1 Live Lounge session, two UK tours, opening for Fickle Friends, then their own headline date in the run up to SXSW. alex@lrxmusic.com cleancutkid.co.uk

OSCAR Wichita signed British bedroom pop, destined for stadiums worldwide. His melancholic songs make heavy use of sampled breakbeats from 90’s East Coast rap records; almost like he fell asleep listening to “Parklife”-era Blur, followed by Nas’s “Illmatic”, and woke up with a gangsta melancholy synthesis boogie. clarebrittplana@gmail.com oscaroscar.co.uk 22

Declan McKenna A young man who wears his political heart on his sleeve, Declan McKenna burst into the public consciousness with his 2014 viral hit “Brazil” about corruption in football. He was promptly signed to Columbia, booked to Glastonbury, picked up by QPrime and even made an appearance on Sky News to talk about the track. tara@qprime.com declanmckenna.bandcamp.com

Girls Names

Tuesday

Their third LP “My Arms Around A Vision” released in October via Tough Love, is a love letter to European elegance – Italian futurism, Russian construtivism, Germany’s Zero Group and both Neubaten and Bowie’s Berlin. Sometimes discordant, sometimes swaggering, always captivating. somegirlsmanagement@gmail.com / stephenp@fatpossum.com girlsnamesband.com

Get Inuit With plenty of love from Radio 1 for their previous single “Pro Procrastinator” (a single of the week for Huw Stephens) the band arrive at SXSW having recently released another belter “My Oh My”. The band have also been tipped by DIY, Line Of Best Fit and CLASH to name but a few and are surely one of the key UK guitar bands for 2016. chrispritchard@dramaminemgmt.co.uk facebook.com/GetInuit 23

In and amongst the heat and madness of this awesome week of music, we hope you’ll have some time to meet and take a little of Wales home with you, here in Austin. He was born in Liverpool, fascinated by dreams, life, death, hope and despair. He grew up singing in the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral Choir in cathedrals and concert halls across Europe and the Liverpool Kop. The People The Poet A SXSW 2015 highlight with a queue around the block, the band won many new fans (earning them a BBC Maida Vale session no less) for their hard to define sound that wouldn’t sound out of place on the stereo in Hot Topic but is also totally at home on BBC Radio 2. thepeoplethepoet@googlemail.com thepeoplethepoet.com

31 ESTRONS

ESTRONS A politically charged Welsh alternative rock group reigning from Cardiff. They uploaded their music to BBC Introducing in Wales in September 2015 and received airplay the following day. Since then, the band have continued to pick up champions across UK national radio including Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, 6 Music’s Tom Robinson, and Annie Mac who chose the foursome as one of her #NewNames for 2016. marc@westorg.com facebook.com/estrons

Frances Wednesday

Frances uploaded her music to BBC Introducing in 2014, where she gained huge early support from her local show in Berkshire. She then had a fantastic 2015, from playing Radio 1’s Live Lounge to being nominated for the Brit Awards Critics’ Choice Award and the BBC Sound of 2016 long-list. grant@methodmusic.co.uk francesmusic.co.uk

The Sherlocks The Sherlocks are a four piece band from Sheffield who were first played on BBC Introducing in Sheffield in 2012. From early doors, 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq has been a huge fan. The band had a hugely exciting 2015 selling out over 300 venues across the UK before then being asked to support The Libertines on their January 2016 arena tour. meantime123@icloud.com thesherlocksmusic.co.uk 32

Billie Marten Billie Marten first uploaded her music to BBC Introducing two years ago when she was 15-years old. A year later she was chosen to perform on the BBC Introducing stages at Reading and Leeds Festivals. Billie has since been nominated in the BBC Sound of 2016 long-list, and has been hotly tipped by Radio 1 presenters Huw Stephens and Annie Mac as one to watch this year. fran@spiltmilkmanagement.co.uk billiemarten.com

Isaac Gracie Wednesday

Described in the UK press as ‘a careworn, melancholy-infused instant classic,’ the 20 year old singer-songwriter Isaac Gracie was first championed by BBC Introducing in Norfolk after uploading his single ‘Last Words’ in August 2015. Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and Radio 2’s Jo Whiley have been championing Isaac ever since. Expect big things from the Norwich songwriter in 2016. tony@maverick.com facebook.com/isaacgraciemusic

Viola Beach – A Tribute In February, a bright young band full of talent, energy and passion tragically lost their lives alongside their friend and manager after playing their first show outside of the UK. We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to all who knew Kris, River, Tomas, Jack and Craig. Please celebrate the band’s talent with us and see a full tribute on page 92.

33

BBC Introducing: This year, BBC Introducing will be descending upon Austin once again to deliver a showcase packed full of acts we believe are destined for great things. BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra, Radio 2 and 6 Music will all be broadcasting from the festival throughout the week and thanks to BBC Music, we’re putting brand new unsigned and under the radar musicians at the forefront of what we do. Alongside putting on bands at UK festivals such as Glastonbury, Reading / Leeds Festivals and T in the Park, in partnership with PRS for Music Foundation, we are committed to providing more opportunities for new British acts internationally.

Wednesday

“SXSW has a special place in both mine and BBC Introducing’s heart as it’s where we first showcased Florence + the Machine back in 2008 and more recently Royal Blood, who debuted here in 2014, and the band Blossoms who joined us last year and are now one of the most tipped bands in Britain. It’s a terrific, atmospheric and intimate venue, the British Music Embassy, and we can’t wait to show you our new favourite acts for 2016.” Steve Lamacq – BBC 6 Music “SXSW is a perfect chance for artists from the UK to shine and play to new audiences. We have an incredible track record of brilliant bands playing here from Florence + the Machine to Royal Blood to Jack Garratt. BBC Introducing and all the shows involved are pleased to bring more excellent bands and artists to play here in 2016.” Huw Stephens – BBC Radio 1

From legendary writer performer Van Morrison to Hollywood soundtrack supremo David Holmes, and from Snow Patrol to Ash, and more recently with acts like SOAK and Bicep, the country has a knack for producing globally successful musical artists. The same can be said for the rest of our creative industries, in particular with the popularity of the high profile HBO series Game of Thrones, which is filmed in Northern Ireland. Our region produces a wealth of creative and entrepreneurial talent, and with the support of Belfast City Council’s Output Belfast initiative, we continue to develop as a key region within the global creative and interactive industries.

All three singles from 2015’s “Not Real” LP were playlisted by BBC 6Music and in August the band were picked by David Byrne to play the prestigious Meltdown Festival. pete@moshimoshimusic.com stealingsheep.co.uk

KLOE

Honne Longtime London pals Honne have been dubbed “futuristic soul to reinvent babymaking music”, and that’s bang on the money. The former Clash Next Waves have a penchant for oozing synths, slap bass and yearning vocals, taking hints from the likes of Quincy Jones and Bon Iver. guillaume@kayakmusic.net hellohonne.com

The Revenge

Friday

Glasgow DJ/producer The Revenge is a man who needs little introduction - a disco house guru with cult status, Graeme Clark has released on Needwant, Future Classic, Z Records and Delusions of Grandeur, while also dropping his debut album “Love That Will Not Die” last year to rapt applause. julie@roargroove.com roargroove.com

Yak Black Country kids Oli and Andy move to London to sell curiosities in markets. They sell a table to John Coxon (Spirituialized), a map to Bill Drummond and a model shit to someone from that Scottish band. They writes songs in a dark basement. Yak are born. Kiwi Elliot joins to bang drums. jamesoldham@roughtrademanagement. com facebook.com/yakyakyak 52

HÆLOS The music that Arthur Delaney, Dom Goldsmith and Lotti Bernardout make as HÆLOS has rightly earned a spot on Matador for their soon-to-be-released debut album. The London trio distill the exhilaration and introspection of a night out into their dark, euphoric and cavernous sound. james.sandom@redlightmanagement. com haelos.com

KLOE

Friday

Glaswegian KLOE has placed herself firmly on the lips of those in the know via her driving pop ballads that owe as much to The Weeknd as Alanis Morissette. Aged just 17 she found herself headlining King Tuts, and the teen pop prodigy has since been snapped up by Columbia for her candid, nocturnal musings. scott@skmgmt.co.uk kloemusic.com

Throwing Shade Cambridge MPhil grad Throwing Shade makes electronic pop for the scrolling generation of digi-addicts. She’s charted releases on No Pain In Pop, Kassem Mosse’s Omnira, and has a Ninja Tune EP on the way - with lead cut “hashtag IRL” exploring social media consumption, while her coveted NTS shows bring an ethnomusicological perspective to the airwaves. thr0wingshad3@gmail.com throwingshade.co.uk 53

Arrows Of Love – British Music Embassy, 2015

Northern Powerhouse: Music has the ability to unite people and so has the Northern Powerhouse. Coming together as one team, the North of England can achieve something great and make music within the region even more popular and even more attractive for foreign investors, acts and visitors.

The aim of the Northern Powerhouse initiative is to bring growth to the Northern regions and encourage their growth across all sectors and industries. It’s an attractive option for foreign investors.

The Crookes

Northern Powerhouse

The Northern Powerhouse economy is larger than those of Taiwan, Sweden or Denmark. Spanning the north of England it unites a host of the UK’s biggest cities including Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle, and pools a wealth of world-class expertise and creative talent.

60

The North East has a long heritage in the music industry, with famous musicians including Bryan Ferry, and more recently Cheryl. Likewise the North West is world famous for its creativity and unique sound which has had a huge impact on the economy as the home of The Beatles and Oasis. In Yorkshire the music is as varied as its landscape and upholds its musical reputation with household names like Arctic Monkeys and Pulp.

61

Northern Powerhouse

PINS

Talent and bands across the entire North are in fact well known and contribute a lot to the local economy with their inspiration and passion, attracting millions of tourists to their festivals each year.

Saturday

British Music At SXSW Presents: In association with Northern Powerhouse • DEMOB HAPPY ----------------------------------------- 5:30pm • FIZZY BLOOD-------------------------------------------- 4:40pm • SUGARMEN --------------------------------------------- 3:50pm • AUTOBAHN ---------------------------------------------- 3:00pm • NAI HARVEST -------------------------------------------- 2:10pm

62

63 Demob Happy

Demob Happy Their debut album “Dream Soda” (released in the UK through So Recordings in October 2015) is a collection of contrasts: tough and tender, melodic and malevolent, sweet and sour. They make a righteous noise and play every show with their now trademark wild abandon. Big grunge riffs and songs to remember. adam@silvascreen.co.uk demob-happy.com

Fizzy Blood Saturday

A Leeds band born from ambition, determination and resilience. Their refreshing musical bravery has seen them shed any traces of the generic. Full of blistering riffs combined with a modern song writing ethos, they’ve succeeded in creating something that stands apart from the current trend in rock music. “A superb debut…one fizzy, blood-y brilliant introduction” – Kerrang! [KKKK] brendan@liverpoolsoundcity.co.uk fizzyblood.com

Sugarmen With a breadth of songwriting as wide as the Atlantic that separates their hometown Liverpool and the consecrated concrete jungle of New York, Sugarmen are like a soundbite straight out of the Big Apple’s diverse underground. All clever art-school cosmic cool and surging memorable melodies, spawning intelligently crafted little numbers. carl@cybase.co.uk facebook.com/sugarmenuk 64

Autobahn This Leeds post-punk five piece released their debut L.P. “Dissemble” via Tough Love in August of last year. Their home in Northern England, as both idea and identity, is integral to what Autobahn are. A place where postindustrial landscapes intersect with sudden wide open spaces, where community is central, but loneliness can be palpable. There’s an oppressive edge to their music, but a hopefulness too. cjohnson.autobahn@gmail.com autobahnmusik.co.uk

Nai Harvest Saturday

DIY slackers from Sheffield, Nai Harvest’s sound is a combination of fuzzy 90s era indie pop, Teenage Fanclub and The Lemonheads with a bit more of a punk edge. Check their 2015 LP “Hairball” that could so easily be mistaken for a classic album from a bygone era. naiharvestband@hotmail.co.uk facebook.com/naiharvestband

67 Barns Courtney

Secret Special Guest Closing proceedings at the British Music Embassy at SXSW 2016 will be one of our favourite new US acts, a band on a mission to be the most fun band in the world.

Formation Saturday

Brothers Will and Matt Ritson certainly have an ear for a memorable tune, creating smart, catchy poptronica. Whilst 2015 saw them play festivals across the globe and open for Foals, going into 2016 they’re a band at the forefront of this year’s “ones to watch” list. bg@grossmgmt.com / pj@grossmgmt.com facebook.com/formationmusic

Barns Courtney Raised in Seattle, but more recently a resident of Ipswich in England, Barns Courtney has a voice which belies his tender years. His anthemic brand of bluesy rock’n’roll has earned him opening spots for the Libertines in the UK and across the US with superstar Ed Sheeran. ronnie@variousartistsmanagement.com barnscourtney.com

68

Pumarosa Pumarosa are a five-piece band from London, whose music has been described as “industrial spiritual” and brings together the brooding, heavier songwriting of PJ Harvey or Patti Smith with the groove-led and nocturnal electronics of The Knife and Cocteau Twins. peter.mcgaughrin@redlightmanagement. com facebook.com/pumarosamusic

Section Boyz Saturday

South London’s hottest rap crew won best newcomer at the 2015 MOBO Awards. If that wasn’t enough of an achievement they also managed to chart at #36 on the UK album chart with their independently released mixtape “Don’t Panic”. haddy@showcasepr.com facebook.com/officialsectionboyz

Lusts Brothers Andy and James Stone create dark, New Wave indie with reverby chorus-laden guitars, strobes and melodic pop hooks. Their debut album “Illuminations” was released towards the end of 2015, the single from which was playlisted on BBC 6Music. Recorded with MJ from Hookworms, their euphoric, driving sound combines the mood of David Lynch films with the “fuzz-ometer of William Reid and Kevin Shields”. ramage435@me.com lustsmusic.co.uk

NME: It’s great to be back back at SXSW with NME once more. I’m the New Music Editor of the magazine and NME.com, so Austin, Texas during March is a very special place indeed for me. It’s where I get the chance to see the best new bands on the planet, and it gives me a chance to plan loads of content – which artists I cover for the rest of the year, basically. I think I said this in 2015’s preview, but if you’re good, then SXSW is the place where you get the chance to become great. I firmly believe in that - last year I saw Sheer Mag, Hinds and Sunflower Bean play to handfuls of excited people, and this year it feels like they’re about to go overground (and deservedly so).

Saturday

At our showcase, we’ve got a thrilling line-up which brings you the very best in up’n’coming British music, taking in the brilliantly danceable Formation to new guitar heroes Lusts and the awesome Pumarosa, who are one of the best live bands around at the minute. Let us show you why British music is so great! Matt Wilkinson – New Music Editor, NME

70

Music is GREAT Britain: The NME has been introducing new music to people since 1949 when it published its first newspaper, and some 67 years later UK Trade & Investment is proud to be partnering with such an iconic British brand to bring you some of the best new music available in the UK today. Contemporary British music and the writers and performers who bring that music to you has now been at the forefront for many of the years since the NME first took to the news-stands and tonight, indeed this week here at the BME promises to be no different, and UK Trade & Investment are delighted to be part of the process to help deliver that music to you through support given to the businesses and companies involved.

PRS for Music Foundation is the UK’s leading charitable funder of new music and talent development across all genres. Since 2000 we have given more than £22 million to over 5,200 new music initiatives in the UK, and continue to support UK artists overseas, through the International Showcase Fund.

TicketWeb was created back in the late 90s by a small group of music fans who wanted to build a truly alternative ticket website. From a garage in California we built the original independent ticket shop - a site for music fans who live beyond the mainstream. After launching in Canada & the UK we quickly became the ticket seller of choice for independent promoters & venues on both sides of the Atlantic. Independent live music and clubs are still at the heart of what we do, but now we also work directly with the artists who fill those venues to make it even easier for real fans to get into their shows.

97 Jack Garratt – British Music Embassy, 2015

A Tribute To Viola Beach: In the early hours of Saturday 13th February, a bright young band full of talent, energy and passion tragically lost their lives alongside their friend and manager. Viola Beach were due to perform at the BBC Introducing and PRS for Music Foundation showcase at the British Music Embassy. All involved would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to all who knew Kris Leonard, River Reeves, Tomas Lowe, Jack Dakin and Craig Tarry. Viola Beach

We came across Viola Beach and their manager Craig Tarry after the band’s lead singer Kris Leonard uploaded “Love My Love” to the BBC Introducing website. The band were soon picked up by their local BBC Introducing presenter Dave Monks. He became a huge supporter of the band and put them forward for consideration for Reading and Leeds Festival. We remember being blown away when we heard “Swings and Waterslides”. A true stand out track from an incredibly exciting new band. Things moved fast, with growing airplay at Radio 1 via Huw Stephens and it’s specialist shows as well as support from 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq. At Reading Festival weekend, we stood backstage with an excited and proud Craig Tarry. The Warrington boys brought their sparkling indie-pop to the legendary BBC Maida Vale studios where they performed 4 tracks for Huw Stephens’ show in November. With continuing success, it was announced just less than 2 weeks before their passing that the band would join us in Austin for our showcase at SXSW – a first opportunity in North America. Although they are now no longer joining us here in Austin, we wish to celebrate the lives of Kris, Jack, River, Tomas and Craig through the music of Viola Beach that will always be with us. With love, BBC Introducing and PRS for Music Foundation
