FOREWORD Brent Grulke was the Creative Director for SXSW, a great friend and supporter of British music, and because of that love and support many UK artists were given the opportunity to play at SXSW and now enjoy successful international careers as a result. Brent sadly passed away on August 13th 2012 and will be greatly missed by many. We would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank him for that tremendous support and love he showed for British music and artists, past and present.

FOREWORD

In 2011 we invited Brent to write a piece for the British Music brochure at SXSW and we would like to repeat his words here to remind us all of a wonderful man and a true friend. My colleagues and I take pride in all the British acts SXSW has helped make some headway in the United States. But it works both ways. Everyone is familiar with the story of the under-recognized American musician who goes to the UK where his or talent is finally – appropriately – rewarded, with Jimi Hendrix serving as the quintessential example. Through the years I’ve been asked when I knew that South by Southwest had “made it.” I’m not a musician, and SXSW is not a band. Still, a moment sticks in my mind… Travel is a perk nearly everyone relishes, but London Heathrow airport in the early morning is always, always, a hassle. I was on my way to an event in the UK. SXSW had been around long enough at this point that people were asking me if I’d come and speak on panels on various topics related to the music business. Despite the fact I felt this was usually a mistake on their part, I did my best, and welcomed the opportunity to hear new music, make new friends, and eat and drink the regional fare. I’d landed and waited in the long queue (simply a boring Line in the States), and now I’d been pulled out, and found myself detained at some length at customs for the usual inexplicable reasons. I hadn’t slept on the overnight flight and was tired and getting annoyed, but only a fool conveys annoyance to customs officials, and I wasn’t going to be that fool that day, respect bordering on obsequiousness my guiding principle this A.M.

4

I reached in my pocket and handed him my business card. He burst into a grin, ushering me through, “South by Southwest! I’ve heard all about you on the Beeb! I’d like to come some day. Welcome to the UK, sir!” That, ladies and gentlemen, is success. My gratitude to the many British friends of South by Southwest that made this possible cannot be overstated. I owe you.

BRENT GRULKE 5

FOREWORD

“Where are you staying in the UK, Mr. Grulke?” “The Thistle Hotel in Brighton, sir.” “Brighton, England...” “Yes, sir.” “How long do you plan to stay in the UK, Mr. Grulke?” “I’m here until Sunday.” “So that would be four days, correct?” “Yes, sir.” “So what is your business in the UK, Mr. Grulke,” he asked, flipping through my passport. “I’m here to attend a music industry event.” “And what is the nature of your business, Mr. Grulke?” “I help organize a music industry event held in Austin, Texas each year.”

TIM WHEELER (Ash)

(Downpatrick) Any band who puts Eric Cantona on their cover artwork deserves some respect, but reverence isn’t something these bona fide legends are short of. With 4 platinum selling albums a 26 track single series and having toured the world we are very proud to have Tim Wheeler along for the ride performing acoustically for us at SXSW. dave.cronen@trustmanagement.co.uk ash-official.com

The Lost Brothers MONDAY

(Navan / Omagh) Beautifully crafted songs and luminous harmonies - and now 3 critically acclaimed albums. The third alum recorded in Nashville is produced by Brendan Benson of the Raconteurs and was released on his new label Readymade Records. NI@SXSW

NI@SXSW is the collective brand for the Northern Ireland Music, Interactive and Film presence at SXSW 2013. 25 Music, Interactive and Film companies, one major feature film premiere and some of 2013’s most exciting showcase bands and artists. The NI@SXSW PARTY takes place at The British Music Embassy, Latitude 30, 512 San Jacinto Blvd on Monday 11th March from 7.30pm.

Belfast City Council’s creative industries strategy, Creative Belfast, is designed to support those working in the fields of film, music, digital media and design to achieve their true economic and creative potential.

MONDAY

Northern Ireland and it’s cities of Belfast and Derry have created an intense soundtrack. From the stormy blues of Them and Van Morrison to the irresistible punk pop of The Undertones to the anthemic swell of Snow Patrol. Music is the currency of our time, used to express our rising fortunes and the pain of the past. Two Door Cinema Club are amongst the current coolest, while David Holmes is sound tracking Hollywood films, with attitude. Belfast is on the rise, full of thrills, enterprise and culture. But importantly, it hasn’t lost its sense of self. The city has soul. Derry is pioneering a range of creative projects designed to set the city apart and to capitalise on its designation as the UK’s first City of Culture in 2013. NI@SXSW is supported by Belfast City Council, Digital Derry, Invest NI and the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure.

British Music is GREAT - UK Trade & Investment The success of the London 2012 Olympics opening and closing ceremonies illustrated exactly why the UK’s Creative Industries are looked upon as world leaders and with a range of artists from the last five decades performing, the originality and quality of our music was never more evident and showed why it continues to be a major influence on global tastes and trends. The UK has a strong track record in developing and promoting the international careers of composers and performers and recently published figures confirmed that UK artists currently account for 1 in every 8 albums sold around the globe, and that trend is likely to continue with some GREAT new British talent being unveiled here at SXSW 2013. The UK media are strongly supportive of the music industry and provide a range of rich environments for performers and audiences and UK Trade & Investment are therefore delighted to be co-hosting this showcase with BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens as well as sponsoring the British Music Abroad scheme with the PRS for Music Foundation amongst other activities.

He’s released Music Sounds Better With Huw compilations through Wichita Recordings, written for NME, Nylon and The Guardian, presented music shows for Channel 4 and curated music for Topman. His monthly nights in London have showcased new artists from across the world, and he’s DJ’ed across the world, including Venezuela, Sonar Barcelona and New Zealand. MUSIC FROM WALES

WALES FUTURE OF THE LEFT - BRITISH MUSIC EMBASSY, 2012

Music from Wales has gotten better than ever. So good in fact that Wales now has it’s own Welsh Music Prize. The Prize shortlists the 12 best records released each year before a panel of judges have the unenviable task of picking a winner each October. The shortlist is chosen from records suggested by 150 music writers and experts working in Wales. Last year over 70 records were presented for the shortlist. That’s 70 albums that these experts felt passionately about and felt were good enough to make a shortlist. 70. Seventy! Here at SXSW you’ll get to see maybe just half a dozen bands from Wales. There’s a lot more to come and discover. John Rostron Senior Manager Welsh Music Foundation

SHOWCASING SCOTLAND Consolidating Scotland’s place at the very forefront of cutting-edge, contemporary music: it’s a pleasure to present two showcases again at SXSW 2013, on Wednesday night and Friday afternoon at the British Music Embassy.

With young pups such as recent Fatcat records’ fuzz-punkers PAWS; impassioned, reverb-drenched rockers Holy Esque; and electro-indie oddballs Tango in the Attic bringing up the rear, Scotland continues to prove its ongoing success across all musical genres on record, on stage and online. Come down and see for yourself. As well as the phenomenal music on display, you’ll also be met with a home-grown, hearty welcome and a wee dram in the Austin sunshine... SCOTLAND

With an ever-dependable track-record, we’re rightly famed for our independent heritage in the postpunk era. Modern exponents include Frightened Rabbit with their heart-on-sleeve, indie-folk anthems, and the bittersweet swoon-pop of Camera Obscura. As electronica takes further hold of the US, Scotland delivers some of the most astute crate-diggers, DJ’s, and producers on the planet in the form of Optimo and NUMBERS (represented by Jackmaster and Spencer). Young Fathers, newly contracted to the legendary Anticon label, bring SXSW their twisted electro and hip-hop; whilst the biggest buzz on the blogosphere, Chvrches, guarantee synth-pop perfection. Guitar-slinging troubadours The View finally make their debut journey across the pond with an armoury of hits at their disposal, and rootsy Glasgow combo Kassidy let loose their own country-blues melange on the land that invented this music. Waterboys legend and acclaimed songwriter Mike Scott has made the trip to play exclusive acoustic sets too – a treat indeed!

(London) Intimate, haunting, minimal pop music created from scratchy soundscapes, muted baselines evocative of more ambient artists but still very much rooted in pop. Check the achingly beautiful “Magazine” online now. mike@intelligentnoise.com elisa@aimiuk.co.uk thisiswall.com

AIM

This year AIM has partnered with Transgressive for the SXSW showcase at the British Music Embassy. Transgressive have been at the forefront of the British music scene since the brilliant Toby and Tim started the label in 2004. When it comes to A&R, some people just seem to have it, and Toby and Tim have it in spades. No metoos on their label, no sounds-a-lot-like artists, just pure instinctive music of the best kind around. Their catalogue speaks for itself. AIM is happy to count Transgressive as one of its members, and we wish the Transgressive team a great showcase, great Mexican nosh and great Margaritas at SXSW. Wish I were there! Alison Wenham Chairman and Chief Executive

ROCKFEEDBACK/TRANSGRESSIVE

No strangers to the British Music Embassy and a much loved British indie, the Transgressive label started life in 2004 and has gone on to release records by some of the most exciting bands to grace London’s stages, Foals, Flume, Neon Indian, Graham Coxon and The Young Knives. Subsequent expansion into the field of publishing has seen such luminaries as Dry The River and Pulled Apart By Horses, both Embassy Alumni, as well as Two Door Cinema Club, do great things for them. The label is currently hard at work on the At The Drive In re-issue campaign as well as developing new acts like Marika Hackman. Their media and promoting arm RFB actually predates the label technically and whilst the website is still going great guns they are perhaps best known for promoting a goodly proportion of hot new (especially North American) bands’ early shows in the capital. transgressive.co.uk rockfeedback.com

FRIDAY

JD Twitch (Optimo) / Young Fathers (ANTICON) / Jackmaster (Numbers) / RUSTIE

47

JD Twitch / Optimo

(Glasgow) Optimo are Scottish duo JG Wilkes and JD Twitch. Launched at the legendary Sub Club, they have become highly respected DJs, touring internationally with their infamous party sound. With a series of critically acclaimed mix CD releases, most recently with Fabric 52, Optimo have become one of the most well known artists in underground dance music. passepromo@gmail.com optimo.co.uk

Jackmaster/nUmbErs FRIDAY

(Glasgow) One of the founders of legendary Glasgow club night Numbers and one sixth of the record label of the same name that has released Redinho, Jessie Ware, Lory D, Jamie xx and SBTRKT. He’s toured the states with Skream & Benga; is an alumnus of the Red Bull Music Academy; and has a Fabric Live release to his name. He’s also the most recent addition to BBC Radio 1’s In New DJs We Trust. jack@nmbrs.net facebook.com/djjackmaster

Young Fathers

(Edinburgh) Alloysious, Kayus and G make up this Anticon based rap trio. Together they rhyme like scions sent from some dystopic future that pulls as much from ancient African tradition as it does contemporary electronic futurism. They make their own posters, videos and self-promote gigs and all of it is superb because they are telepathic and self-sustaining. timothylondon@blueyonder.co.uk young-fathers.com

48

Other Scottish bands @ SXSW (Glasgow) Iain Cook, Martin Doherty and Lauren Mayberry are Chvrches. Three individuals bearing three distinct personalities on a consummate whole. Combining indie sensibilities and aesthetics with barbed pop hooks and and an unhealthy obsession with Prince, Chvrches take elements of classic electronica, hip hop and post-punk, and yet sound like none of the above. Their blend of classic and modern analogue synthesisers, bruised beats and crude vocal sampling came to the fore in their debut single THE MOTHER WE SHARE, released in late 2012, as it did in LIES, their first track that seeped onto the internet earlier in the year. Chvrches were voted #5 in the BBC Sound of 2013, and #2 in the UK Blog Sound of 2013. campbell.mcneil@gmail.com chvrches.tumblr.com

Frightened Rabbits

(Selkirk) They are proudly Scottish, and adored on native soil, but their songs also seem to take on greater resonance and power the further from home they travel. “Pedestrian Verse,” the band’s fourth studio album, has already earned a wide range of critical applause and a fervent international fan following with its emotional melodies and frank lyricism. storme@littletouring.co.uk frightenedrabbit.com

Blitz Kids

(Cheshire) This prolific band have already in their short career released 2 EPs, a mini-album and a full length as well as supporting the likes of Mayday Parade, Tonight Alive, We The Kings and appearing at Sonisphere and Slam Dunk in the UK. The band recently started work on a new long player with Goldfinger’s John Feldmann in L.A. julie@visiblenoise.com blitzkidsofficial.com

China Rats FRIDAY

(Leeds) A classic British indie band with strong influences from British 50s pop, punk and britpop. Glitter free tempo sing along tunes from a band who already played Benicassim before they were even a year old. Hotly tipped. francisco@onceuponatimemusic.co.uk chinarats.co.uk

The Crookes

(Sheffield) Making a welcome return to The Embassy in 2013, the band have just completed a UK tour supporting Richard Hawley after releasing their sophomore effort of Northern social realism “Hold Fast” in July last year. pennyblackham@googlemail.com thecrookes.co.uk

54

Jamie-N-Commons

(London) A classic rock’n roller if ever there was one, listening to Mr. N-Commons bluesy drawl you’d be forgiven for thinking you were listening to some lost American classic album of the 60s or 70s. Timeless. colin@prolifica.co.uk jamiencommons.com

(Scunthorpe) The UK buzz band du jour sound very much like time came to an abrupt halt when The Beatles abandoned pop and went all psychedelic. Sharp, catchy tunes with all the usual trimmings and classic moptops. Check their awesome “Hold Me Tight” online now. rachel@quest-management.com ruenbrothers.com

Luke Sital-Singh

(London) Creating waves with his free download “Fail for You”, a track that sounded something akin to a one man choir; this man is one singer/songwriter who truly does have that 64 million dollar something that you need to stand out in a crowded genre. raygunmusic@mac.com lukesitalsingh.com

Kilimanjaro is one of the UK’s biggest national concert promoters. Independently owned but with the ability to take acts from small clubs to arenas and into football stadiums it also has a growing portfolio of festival interests. Kilimanjaro’s Steve Tilley is the UKTI music consultant and the company sends several promoters to SXSW every year scouting for acts to bring back to the domestic market. The showcase bill reflects the diversity of exciting new music the UK is producing and Kilimanjaro itself, which not only promote shows but as part of the service also offers its artists a combination of opinion/ advice, marketing strategies and those all important support and festival slots.

FRIDAY

PRS for Music

At this year’s SXSW, PRS for Music is partnering with Kilimanjaro to showcase some of the best music the UK has to offer. Kilimanjaro will be bringing along The Crooks, Jamie-N-Commons and Luke SitalSingh amongst others. PRS for Music supports its members in the UK and beyond while Kilimanjaro’s reputation for passion and commitment to the music industry makes it an exciting partnership. SXSW is a central focus for the export of British acts both to the US and worldwide. The British Embassy showcase is a great opportunity to show off how good a band can be. It will be loud, it will be great, and it will be British Music at its best.

SOHN

Fear Of Men SATURDAY

(Brighton) The band was born when Jess (vox, guitar) had been writing / recording ambient soundtracks to short films and Daniel (guitar) attended an exhibition of her work. MarY EPWORTH

(Bishop’s Stortford) Twice recipient of BBC Radio 1 / Zane’s “Hottest Record In The World” accolade which is high praise indeed for someone so rooted in the sounds of country and folk. Haunting, wistful and intelligent. michelle@somethingsound.co.uk maryepworth.com

(Liverpool) A LIPA educated Paul McCartney, Paul Smith, Ben Lovett & Guardian “New Band Of The Day” approved nightclub doorman who almost went pro as a rugby player. Syd Arthur

(Canterbury) A hazy mix of 60s and 70s sounds, a bucolic mix of retro reveries, devastating blasts of precision controlled riffing, sweeping folk, fleet-fingered mandolin work and a musical vocabulary that’s as fluently conversant with world music as it is the time signature twists of Soft Machine. bookings@dawnchorusrecordco.com sydarthur.co.uk

THE EAST OF ENGLAND

Positioned as the central hub of the East of England’s creative industries, Norwich is one of England’s oldest cities and one which has it’s own distinct character – known for being fiercely independent yet contemporary, historically a home for radicals, innovators, dissenters and revolutionaries. Norwich and the wider region of the East of England has a wide range of innovative artists and enterprises, both large and small. The range of artists we are showcasing at SXSW this year reflect the diversity on offer from the East and South East of England, and in particular a fondness for subverting the traditional format of ‘pop’: from the folky yet psychedelic pop music of Mary Epworth to the electropop of Fenech Soler to the dream pop of Fear of Men. The Orwells (US) / Swim Deep / Peace / TOY / Eagulls / RDGLDGRN (US)

Latitude 30, 512 San Jacinto

SATURDAY

Official SXSW Showcase

65

RDGLDGRN

(USA) The Washington trio have an air of secretism around them – they’re known only as Red, Gold and Green at present. There’s also the small matter of Mr Dave Grohl playing drums on their forthcoming debut album. Key track “I Love Lamp” is the one to check – a thrilling update on Vampire Weekend with an added shot of DC go-go rhythmic brilliance. matt@aaminc.com rdgldgrn.com

Eagulls SATURDAY

(Leeds) The Leeds punks are one of the UK’s most thrilling live bands – fusing raucous songs about council estates with a grittiness that’s missing from 99.9% of other acts. They cite Wipers as a key influence, are tight with everyone from Iceage to Milk Music and sometimes sell tobacco on their merchandise stand. Careerists they are not. daniel_mcevoy@me.com facebook.com/eagulls

Peace

(Birmingham) Tipped as the UK’s hottest new band, Peace are leading Birmingham’s B-Town scene. Their songs hark back to when Damon Albarn was still writing unbeatable pop anthems, which is presumably why Columbia signed them on the strength of seeing just one gig - a now-legendary house party where the band played their set in the kitchen corner. russ@deadlypeople.net peaceforeverever.co.uk

66

Swim Deep

(Birmingham) Another leading export from Birmingham’s thriving B-Town movement (widely seen as the UK’s most exciting scene at present), Swim Deep are writing the most perfect choruses in indie. Their sounds have a hint of the baggy swagger that made The Stone Roses so important, while also being big enough to feel perfectly at home in the mainstream. mike@flatcapmusic.com swim-deep.tumblr.com

(US) The Chicago fivepiece are frighteningly young and full of snotty-nosed punk attitude. Tracks like Mallrats (La La La) have been causing a stir in the UK, where anticipation is building steadily around the band. Until they make it over the pond, rest assured they’ll be tearing up the NME stage at SXSW. larryflittle@gmail.com facebook.com/theorwellsband

TOY

(London) These Heavenly Records signings, who recently headlined an NME Awards show at The Scala, are London’s hottest neu [sic] kraut band. Several briefly tasted success with hot young things The Jing Jang Jong a while back before forming TOY and embarking on tours with the likes of The Vaccines and The Horrors. emily.watson@hallornothing.co.uk toy-band.com

NME

Currently celebrating its 60th year, NME is the UK’s most iconic and longest-running weekly music magazine. From introducing our readers to the world’s best new bands to going backstage, onstage and beyond with the most infamous names in rock’n’roll, NME thrives on getting unparalleled access, publishing the most exciting music photography around and putting on sell-out tours around the UK. The magazine has scored exclusives with everyone from Blur to Grimes to The Rolling Stones in the past 12 months, while NME.COM continues to go from strength-to-strength – it is now the world’s biggest stand alone music website, with a global audience of over seven million unique users per month. NME’s SXSW showcase offers the very best in new British music, along with a couple of US favourites and some returning UK heroes.

The BPI SATURDAY

British Music firmly punches above its weight on the global stage. British artists accounted for one in seven (13.7%) artist albums sold in the US recorded music market in 2012, the highest share on record, and four out of the top five selling albums of the year Stateside came from British acts. The continued success of British music internationally highlights not only the strength and depth of British talent, but also the skill and investment by British record companies in developing, marketing and promoting British music overseas. The international revenues generated from record sales (and other secondary sources) are vital for future investment by UK record companies, ensuring the continued success of UK artists in these vital overseas markets. In BPI’s 40th anniversary year we are proud that British music is stronger than ever. Together with the NME we are delighted to present a diverse collection of British acts we are sure will continue the success of British music globally, as well as some emerging international talent that NME have handpicked for the occasion to create a brilliant showcase.

Art and Soul: The Global Renaissance of the Gig Poster THURSDAY 14th, 3.30pm-4.30pm Convention Center Room 15 The rock poster, with its bold graphics and artistic freedom, was a staple of the 60s/70s music scene. As the scene digitised so too did the artwork, and the rock poster as artistic medium appeared to be lost. The 90s however brought with them a resurgence of rock poster design.  This time round the poster was both advert and artefact, and acted as a unique artistic interpretation of a band’s music and limited edition merchandise. Fast forward to today and gig poster art has its own superstars and artist collectives are springing up all over

the world. This panel of practitioners and advocates will explore this thriving scene both from a local and international perspective.
