NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

ello fellow key clubbers!

First of all, I hope that y'all are having a great summer so far! I know that September is coming faster than usual so let's do whatever we have to do and whatever we want to do to make sure that our summer will be spent wisely and happily! Actually, I've been more stressed this summer more than the past years' summers because I'm going to be a Senior in September which is CRAZY! I remember wishing as a freshman for my high school years to pass by quickly but now, although I have a lot more responsibilities, I wish Senior year wouldn't end. Therefore, for all the underclassmen reading this: PLEASE BALANCE YOUR FUN AND YOUR STUDIES so that you won't regret anything when you're finally a Senior! I love y'all and if you need someone to talk to, I'm always here! (my social media will is tagged RIGHT HERE!

PRESIDENT'S REMARKS

CHIJIUN (APRIL) SU

I

n the month of July, we successfully hosted 14 events, and 11 of them are Environmental themed! I am so thankful to have been given the opportunity to spread awareness for a cause I care so much about. We truly made a difference in the community with all the parks we cleaned up and the attention we gathered at the Zero Hour Climate March. I look forward to bringing more volunteering events to help the environment in the future. Let’s alleviate the environmental degradation in racial-minority communities and climate change by providing EVERYONE with the means to live a sustainable lifestyle, from raking the parks in our communities to setting up effective recycling programs in schools!

5

Also, I want to thank everyone who continued to attend events during the summer. I know taking hours out of your day to volunteer is no easy feat, amidst summer homework, job, and test prep. But I assure you community service is one of the best ways you can be spending your summer vacation. It is an opportunity to not only give back to the community, but also to become a better version of yourself. I urge everyone to go out there and push the boundaries of your capabilities this summer by attending our events and trying out new things! For me, I took the risk of being stressed out and attended two summer programs! How about you?

VICE PRESIDENT'S REMARKS

AYAN RAHMAN

H

ey key clubbers,

I hope this summer has been treating you well, and that key club has still been a part of your life! July was an awesome month, it was the first of many to come that focus on one centralized theme of service. For this month, we focused on the environment and all of this was organized by none other than our President, April! From fundraising for One Tree Planted, to making our voices heard at the Zero Hour Youth Climate March, to simply taking initiative at park cleanups, we've demonstrated our potential as young leaders to change the world around us. It was extremely awe-inspiring seeing all the work we put in collectively. I can't wait to see what we accomplish throughout the school year! I wish all of you a restful and adventures rest of the summer. Look forward to the environmental workshop in September as well as the August theme of the month mentioned later in this newsletter, and continue to make change in the world around you. See you at our first meeting!

What's "Themes of the Month"? Inspired by our District Governor Erica Swirsky, Brooklyn Tech Key Club will be choosing contemporary issues as the themes of the month and hosting volunteering events and workshops pertaining to that topic. This way our members will do more meaningful work and support causes they are passionate about.

How YOU can participate:

We are currently looking for other leaders to host themes of the month! Whether it is climate change or world hunger, if you are passionate about the topic and want to teach your Key Clubber about it, contact April Su at pres.thetechkey@gmail.com to claim a month!

ZERO HOUR YOUTH CLIMATE MARCH

On Saturday, July 21, a few other BTHS Key Club members and I took part of the Zero Hour Youth Climate march. This march was meant to help protest against the extensive use of fossil fuels and to encourage others to use more clean and renewable resources. We started out lined up in front of Trump Tower, everyone had homemade posters and banners decorated in bright colors and bold statements. I had never been to a march before and as the line of people grew longer, I began to feel nervous. We started marching at 11, and I was right in the middle with

both the front and end of the march nowhere in sight. As I looked around, I saw so many different people from so many walks of life! We all marched as one, saying chants like “What do we want? Climate justice! When do we want it? Now!” When the march ended, we got to hear many speakers talk about the issues that the Earth’s climate is facing and how we can help stop those issues. I never would’ve expected to be a part of something so big and motivational, but I’m really glad I took part in this march to strive for a cleaner environment. ANONYMOUS

WESTERLEIGH PARK

The event at Westerleigh Park in Staten Island, was an effort to refurbish the gazebo in the center of the park. The gazebo is a staple of Westerleigh Park, but has fallen into disrepair in recent year. There have been many renovation efforts, but the work done was not sufficient and the gazebo repeatedly became damaged. This time around, the work done was very thorough, and for this specific event, volunteers were used to scrape old and worn paint off of the walls, as well as repaint the gazebo. KIRAN BERGER

I T' S M Y P A R K

Every time I go to a Key Club event, I feel like I’m becoming a better person. Volunteer work is something you can do to give back to the community, and it just feels really good. In August, I went to Stuyvesant Park with my friend and swept up leaves. It sounds mundane, but the results were worthwhile. Across the street,

people sometimes stood outside to smoke, and someone walked up to us and thanked us, saying it was really nice for us to volunteer to clean things up after it’s been so cluttered for so long. Knowing other people appreciated our work felt all the more gratifying. ELLEN SETO

DIVISIONAL NEWS

The past month has been quite the hectic one. From going to ICON to hosting summer events and having a lot of unfortunate occurrences division 9 has been tackling the summer time head strong! We've had successful fundraisers, great turn outs for divisional events, and amazing work done by each club. Brooklyn Tech for me is the most exciting though, with the largest club membership rate and it's amazing to watch President April Su work hard to make her club better than what it has already own'd up to. It's inspiring to watch her and the btech board come up with monthly themes like Governor Erica! I can't wait for what brooklyn tech will bring to their home, school, and community in the future!
