Village Temple Soup Kitchen

TRACY JIANG BTHS CLASS OF 2020

Helping out at the Village Temple Soup Kitchen was a very unique experience for me. On that extremely cold Saturday, we met and worked with many other students and adults who were very passionate about volunteering and had been to the

soup kitchen on a regular basis. As a group, we prepared bagged lunches, chopped vegetables for soup, and set up tables and chairs to get ready for our guests. It was really encouraging to see so many people come together to help out the homeless and needy,

but what really shocked me was the fact that the meals we had prepared that day would be most likely the one single meal that our guests would be receiving for the entire week. At the end, the entire group felt very accomplished and it was really nice to know that we all played an important role in our community that day in preparing meals that would serve many people.

LEGOS ROBOTICS COMPETITION By Youssef Elmosalami '20

Being able to participate in the Lego Robotics competition was the chance of a lifetime for me. First of all the amount of food that the volunteers go was marvelous. But, most importantly, it was really intriguing to see countless kids competing at something they're really passionate about, with their family and friends cheering in the background. Â Moreover, the task that I was assigned was scorekeeping so my group and I would need to calculate the overall score for each team at the end of every round. So we got to get the behind the scenes look at how the entire event ran and even watch some of the races or mazes that some teams were trying to complete. Finally, I got to meet some really interesting people, the people who managed the event and even some of the middle schoolers who were competing. At the end, it didn't feel as though I was volunteering but rather having the a really great time.

KEY CLUB TAKES ON

JANUARY 20TH

EQUALITY, AND NOTHING LESS! KEY CLUB FIGHTS FOR JUSTICE! January 20th marked the day that thousands, if not more, people marched to assert that women's rights are human rights. For the longest time ever, feminists have worked tirelessly to attain the rights and privileges that men have, and women don't. The march that took place in New York was one of many across the United States. It was aweinspiring to see the level of passion and ferocity in fighting for the cause, And of course, for any social justice cause, you'll always find a crowd of key clubbers shouting at the top of their lungs fighting for what is right. Brooklyn Tech's Key Club, along with other clubs throughout NYDKC, had the honor and privilege to walk alongside such valiant and generally amazing people. The Women's March was a surreal event to participate and it served as a reminder that if we want to see change in the world, we must work towards it ourselves.Â

NEW YORK DIST

ICE SK FUNDRAI DIVISION

9

On January 24th at the Lefrak Ice Skating Center in Prospect Park, Key Clubbers from across Brooklyn gathered up to have a day of fun and fundraise for a great cause. Over 180 people attended the Annual Division 9 Ice Skating Fundraiser, to raise funds for Kamp Kiwanis, a day camp with the mission of helping the physically and mentally challenged. We were fortunate enough to raise over 550 dollars in funds for the cause. It was a great way to let loose during regents break after a longlasting month of stress from school. It brought so many people together and new friendships arose. Thank you to our Lieutenant Governor Patricia Ahmed for working tirelessly to plan and execute this, because of her over 180 people got to enjoy their day off. Let's try and get her on the rink for next year :).Â

MLK DAY OF SERVICE BROOKLYN, NY BY ANN-JENICA JOSE

the MLK Day of Service event was a volunteer event in which a bunch of friends and I visited a public middle school in Brooklyn and we helped prepare and sell healthy, organic foods to some of the residents in the area for an affordable price. We prepared containers of fruits, vegetables, and prepared some quick bites using things like yogurt and granola. It was really fun because I was with friends, the fact that the money was going to a good cause and that it took place on such a revolutionary day was also lightening, and the smile on the people’s faces when I sold them our items was a huge plus to me personally.

PAT & D I V I S COR

Happy New Year Brooklyn Tech!

Despite the beginning of a new year, we are still two months away from our 70th Annual Leadership Training Conference (LTC). Of course, it is sad to see our service year coming to a close, but we are proud of all the service and dedication our division has input thus far. Therefore, we encourage you to continue pushing through until March and beyond if you’re an underclassman! This month, KCR Mr. Gioia, Immediate Past Lieutenant Governor Raymond Liao, and I held interviews to determine who would serve as the Lieutenant Governor for the upcoming service year. After listening to the ideas from four worthy candidates, we decided on Flora Tsui, a junior from Midwood HS. We’re sure she will be able to continue the legacy of Division 9. In addition to this, we held our Annual Ice Skating Fundraiser at the LeFrak Center in Prospect Park. With nearly 180 Key Clubbers in attendance, we were able to raise $576.75! It’s amazing to see how successful we can be when we all work together. It’s just a reminder of how much we are capable of as a student-led organization. Sure, we may be high schoolers, but we pave the way for change as the world’s future servant leaders.

Yours in Care and Service, Lieutenant Governor Patricia Ahmed and Executive Assistant Josephine Wu

WHAT'S UP WITH KEY CLUB

INTERNATIONAL? GO ABROAD

The summer abroad opportunity is still open! DEADLINE MARCH 1st K-Corps is the branch of Kiwanis International which handles the youth exchange programs for members of the Kiwanis Family. Going abroad during your time in high school is truly surreal, and I speak from experience! It gives you the chance to learn and experience a different culture far away from home, as well as discover new meaning behind service. Summer 2018. 2 Weeks. Japan. Â You'll be able to experience Japanese culture and live in a homestay, with other key clubbers like yourself! If this is something that interests you, email editor.thetechkey@gmail.com and find more info at www.kiwanis.org/kcorpsÂ

6 SKILLS EVERY LEADER NEEDS TO SUCCEED

Here are six things that Key Club international has said about what it takes to be a leader: Passion. When you truly care about something, others can tell. You make it a priority. Set the example. If you expect guidelines to be followed, you must pave the way. Talk less, listen more. When you listen, you’re more likely to hear and understand the underlying issues. Motivation. It’s one thing to have ideas; it’s another thing to take action and follow through. When morale gets low, be the one who keeps people going. Trustworthiness. Your team members must know they can depend on you to have their best interest at heart. Building trust takes time and can be hard to earn back once it’s lost. Flexibility. Things happen. Plans change. Being opened minded and accepting the idea of taking a different path show adaptability.
