THE BEAVER TREE BROOKLYN TECH HIGH SCHOOL
A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR Happy Halloween everyone! Or rather, what I should've said if I actually posted this on time! (I got sidetracked with the Thanksgiving special edition don't kill meee). Nevertheless, I hope all of you had an amazing Halloween and got to spend it with friends and family, I know I did! October was one great month! We participated in many walks and community service events, and we advertised like crazy to get new members to join! I'm running out of things to say again but I hope you have sunken into the school life again and if you're not enjoying it, you can always look to Key Club! Hey Everyone!
PRESIDENT'S REMARKS
October was an amazing month. We were all able to participate in so many halloween related events. Furthermore we raised $609.85 for the Trick or Treat For Unicef Fundraiser. That is incredible, thank you all so much! Look forward to another fundraiser with the Leukemia and Lymphoma society in January. We have also sent out a google form recently, please fill it out as it will tell us where you are located and will help us find events in your area. Keep up the great work!
VICE PRESIDENT'S REMARKS October was such a fun month! We had so many Halloween events and it makes me so happy to see our members enjoy themselves and dress up as spooky monsters. Seeing this, I’ll try to find more fun events with the events committee during each holiday for our members to have a good time and make people around them happy.

GOOD OL' CULTURAL FUN!
OCTOBER 8, 2017 SUNSET PARK, BROOKLYN On October 8th, Key Clubs from all over the city, including Division 9 and 11, gathered together in Sunset Park, Brooklyn to take part in the festivities of the Autumn Moon Cake Festival. We helped organize and set up the stations in which the vendors sold their goods at as well as help out with the performances and the magnificent dragon that paraded around the perimeter of the festival. By the end of it, although it rained, we managed to pull off a fun and exciting event for the entire community to take part of. And perhaps the best part may have been when we got to chow down on the delicious free food at the end of the event! We look forward to working with Better Chinatown in any future events!
OCTOBER 14, 2017 INTREPID MUSEUM, NYC BY JODIE ZHENG BTHS CLASS OF 2021 When I went to the Lupus Walk event for Key Club, I didn't know what to expect from this experience. However, I was greeted by welcoming staffs that immediately got everyone under control and made everyone comfortable. While my group was directing the walkers in the direction they are suppose to go, we can see the determination expressed on the their faces, who not only consists of survivors, but also people are currently battling the illness. However, many walkers were also everyday people, who walked to showed their support and encouragement to find a cure. Regardless of the evil existing in this world, these everyday civilians can unarguably represent the good and kindness in many. Being able to be a part of NYC’s Cure for Lupus Walk was an amazing experience, and hopefully they find a cure for Lupus someday soon.

MAKING MAKINGSTRIDES STRIDES AGAINST AGAINSTBREAST BREAST CANCER! CANCER! OCTOBER 15, 2017 CONEY ISLAND, BROOKLYN BY ASHANTI CLARKEÂ BTHS CLASS OF 2020 Going to the Breast Cancer walk was a wonderful and enlightening experience. I did not just walk the Coney Island roads and boardwalk. I got to witness survivors in action, relishing in the pride and gratefulness of beating Breast Cancer. Yet I also got to see family and friends of people who unfortunately did not win the fight, and being in their presence was humbling. Overall, I was apart of a powerful union of people determined to eradicate Breast Cancer, and not let it win. While developing a deeper understanding of Breast cancer and how it affects people, I also got to hang out with my friends, make new friends and enjoy myself. I honestly had a great time, and I think being able to go to empowering walks like this one as a division is a great opportunity.
E K I B TRACY JIANG BTHS CLASS OF 2020
Volunteering at the finish line of the Bike MS NYC 2017 race was extremely fun. We took part in this event by serving food to all the bikers in the race and their family members as they came to celebrate their achievement in completing a 30, 50, or 100 mile race. During the first hour there, we helped arrange tables, carry boxes, and set up merchandise and snacks. While we were preparing for the bikers to arrive at the finish line we could all feel the anticipation as we were waiting for the bikers to get closer and closer. We had set up piles and piles of snacks and it almost seemed as if there was too much, but when the riders finally crossed the finish line and surged inside the building, we

were shocked at how fast the food that we had set up had disappeared in a number of minutes. We also got to help out at the Bareburger table and serve hamburgers and salads. While serving the food, we got to interact with many of the bikers there we even got to work with Key Clubbers from other schools. The most important part of this event, however, was the purpose that it served which was to bike and raise money for multiple sclerosis research. It was amazing to see so many people come together to support such a wonderful cause. To be able to take part in an event that would make a difference in the lives of many people who have multiple sclerosis made it a truly meaningful experience for all of us.
OUT OF THE DARKNESS WALK
BATTERY PARK CITY, MANHATTAN OCTOBER 22, 2017 ISABELLA IIAMS BTHS CLASS OF 2020 As someone whose life has been impacted by depression, self harm, and suicide, the idea behind the Out of the Darkness Walk hits very close to home. However despite the difficult and tragic topics behind the walk, the spirit of the event was one of joy and support, to celebrate life. Seeing people who have been affected by mental illness turn that negativity into raising awareness for those who may not be able to speak up for themselves was uplifting. ItÂ
was incredibly gratifying to be surrounded by people with positive energy, all walking towards the same goal of helping others out of dark times. Throughout the day I had the opportunity to meet many people who had such encouraging stories to share. And although we were just walking, talking, and cheering, it was much more than that. Together we showed that when we unite and support each other, we are stronger than any mental illness.
HAUNTED HALLOWEEN WALK PROSPECT PARK, BROOKLYN OCTOBER 28, 2017 GABRIELLE MAZZA BTHS CLASS OF 2020
The Haunted Halloween Walk has taken place for the last 38 years at Prospect Park. I am very thankful to have taken part of this Prospect Park tradition and hope to have the opportunity to join it next year. Â It is run by the Prospect Park Alliance to bring spooky fun to the family and children partaking in this amazing event. Â As volunteers we had to dress up in costumes and become part of the walk. Some dressed as witches, others as zombies, some as trolls, and the list goes on. My friends and I had to dress as trolls. At first we tried to be spooky and creepy for our roles. Midway we realized that it was actually better to be more of a comic relief role. I had so much fun spending the day with my everyone. I was also able to meet people from other schools who came together through this event. What made my day though was seeing the bright smiles of the children with their parents as they went through this walk.

SUNEHRA SUBAH BTHS CLASS OF 2020
Immediately upon walking into the small school, I saw numerous monster pictures drawn by children on the walls. Skeletons and scary decorations were still being put up, but the main priority was displaying the art that students made. Really, this whole event surrounded making children smile. I remember my friends and I helping kids make ghosts out of ribbon and masks out of paper plates. One adorable little girl made one just for her father, who was a princess like her. I loved interacting with and getting to have serious conversations with children, such as a discussion over favorite jelly beans. Upstairs, a party and haunted house was set up and everyone did a great job playing their part. We got to check out the house for ourselves and we screamed almost as loud as the children.Â
PAT & D I V I S COR
Happy October our Spooky Sharks!
It’s Pat and Jo here. October was a month filled with service projects and fundraisers. In addition to it being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, every club in the division had Halloween-related volunteer events. The first huge event of the month was the annual Breast Cancer Walk. Instead of it being held at Prospect Park, Key Clubbers met at the MCU Stadium in Coney Island to walk the five mile route. Although there were gloomy skies, the clouds did not rain on our parade, and we walked the entire route before meeting up to the take a divisional photo at the end. The Breast Cancer walk is definitely one of the division’s largest and favorite walks, and it was incredible to see how many people came out to raise awareness and show their support merely by walking.
The second relatively large walk Division 9 participated in was the Out of Darkness Walk, a walk intended for suicide prevention and awareness. This was our first time hearing about this walk, and we knew we had to participate after we did. Suicide and mental health is a topic many people don’t really think about, although it is one of the biggest issues facing the youth today. Although the tone of this walk was a more serious one than the Breast Cancer Walk, the division still

had a 9reat time bonding while walking around the scenic Battery Park. The rest
of the month was one where a lot of clubs held their first meetings and hosted
Halloween themed volunteer events. Since Halloween is definitely my favorite
month, it was
really fun to see all of the clubs in the division create and participate in
Halloween related events—like your club!
In the end, October was definitely another successful month checked off in the
service year. We can’t wait to see how the rest of the year turns out!

BOTTLE RUN! TO PROMOTE RECYCLING!
Throughout the summer and all the September events, we have been collecting plastic bottles from members at every event and meeting. Many of us are guilty of purchasing plastic water bottles and throwing them out once we're done using them. What we don't know is where these bottles end up; that's landfills and the oceans. Marine animals mistake these things for food or get trapped within them, so they pose as great trouble. To spread awareness on this, and put our two cents in to help, we've collected from members bottles that would eventually end up in places like these. So far, we've collected about 700 bottles! Thats 200 more than the last count! Keep up the great work!
