DEVELOPING AN ARTIST STATEMENT
Monday, October 23, 6-8 pm
Instructor: Jessica Manley
$75
What exactly is an artist statement and how is it different from a bio? Is a CV the same as a résumé? Join Jessica Manley, editor and curator, for professional guidance and feedback on your writing. Artists from all disciplines and at all levels are welcome. Participants will need to send in their current artist statement, bio, and CV a week before class to be reviewed by Jessica. Class will be spent reviewing edits together and exploring ways to improve your writing. All participants will work toward a concise, polished artist statement that communicates what you investigate, observe, and want to express with your art, so your next grant, residency, or exhibition proposal is even stronger. During the week following class, students may send their revised statements to Jessica for final comments. Pair this class with Talking with the Curator to build off of what you learn.
TALKING WITH THE CURATOR: PREPARING AN EXHIBITION PROPOSAL
Tuesday, November 7, 6-8 pm
Instructor: Heather Ferrell
$75
Join Heather Ferrell, BCA’s Curator and Director of Exhibitions, for a one-night workshop to learn best practices when creating an exhibition proposal. A week before the workshop, participants send images of 3-5 works, an artist or project statement, and a draft cover letter for their proposal to be reviewed. During the workshop, participants discuss how to present material for different galleries and museums, refine a project statement, and prepare to speak about their work with a curator. Students may send revised proposals the week following the workshop for final comments. Pair this class with Developing an Artist Statement to build on of what you learn.
