Melbourne - home of good coffee, great restaurants, AFL, Australian Open, the Melbourne Cup – and of course, climate change. Byron may be flooding, but here it’s a balmy 28 degrees. Or it was – now it looks a bit stormy – that’s Melbourne! Growing up in the southern city, I guess I became a bit obsessed with climate change. Melbourne’s geography, topography and it’s famous inversion layer meant that the climate was notoriously difficult to predict. Make it here as a climate forecaster, and you can make it anywhere! Perhaps I’m confusing climate change with the weather? I used to think they were the same thing – or at least very closely related. Apparently not! There are experts who say we can experience significant weather events that are nothing to do with the climate, and we can witness seismic climatic change that will have no impact on the weather! Who would have thought?! Can that really be possible? It sounds to me a bit like putting Bridget McKenzie and $100 million in a room together and expecting there to be some change left for coffee in the morning. Highly unlikely! Arriving at the hotel, I immediately switch on the news. I need a climate fix. And there it is – the weather report. On every channel there are stars like Tim Bailey, Grant Denyer, Emma Freedman, Nathe, Stevie J, Sam Mac, JT, Jane Bunn, Rebecca Judd, Livinia, Brownie, and Byron’s own Magdalena Roze. These celebrities dominate the networks. They are models, entertainers, actors and meteorologists. They cross to roaming weather reporters, out on location. They front weather walls and Instagram pics. They interview surfers, fishermen, school kids and mayors. They track cyclones, bushfires, sea swell, and the movement of highs and lows. Their stories lead the news, close the news, ARE the news. Pardon the pun, but the weather is just a front. This is the age of the Climate Evangelist. Meteorologists are her disciples, and we are all the flock, awaiting conversion. How should I prepare for the trip home to Byron? Sam Mac tells me to expect it all – rainfall and sunshine, clear skies and thunderstorms, bushfires, floods, smoky days and a purple haze. I’m off to Target to do some shopping. I saw a new multi-purpose, Melbourne made, four-seasons, climate change ready umbrella. It will be perfect for chillaxing in the backyard in Byron – whatever the weather. Cheers….. Tony, Byron Bazaar

BE AN INNER ENVIRONMENTALIST.
We’re pretty lit here in Byron - you don’t see nearly as many single-use coffee cups, plastic water bottles or straws in these parts as you do outside of the Byron bubble. Mamas and Papas pack plastic-free lunches and shun cling film and attend protests with babes in arms. Reusable razors are all the rage. Organic food and fabrics and compostable packaging abound in our beautiful Bay. Which is awesome and important. I’m so proud of the way we are all doing small things together to create a big change. Protests and plasticfree living are important. Because environmentalism depends on outward action. But what’s happening outside of us is a reflection of our inner lives. So environmentalism also depends on inner work. We need to turn our gaze inward and reflect on what aspects of ourselves have contributed to this catastrophe. The best way to create change in the outer environment is to change the inner environment. And the best tool I know of for doing that is meditation. Meditation offers us the opportunity to develop equanimity, a word derived from Latin which translates to “balanced internal state.” By sitting still and noticing the changing landscape of emotions and thoughts in meditation, we practice staying (rather than leaving or resisting) and listening (without judgement or attachment). Equanimity deepens our self-awareness and amps up our emotional intelligence. It also schools us in non-attachment which makes responding wisely to our impulses and emotions a heck of a lot easier. We eat, buy and act more consciously, rather than in reaction to distorted feelings, unconscious cravings and self-soothing impulses. In other words, we can investigate - and relate differently to - the underlying discomforts that cause us to move with more speed than we should and consume more than we need. So take action with your life, yes. But also, be an inner environmentalist. Be an inner activist. Change the inner landscape and the outer landscape will shift, too. Because when you become more conscious, your choices do too.

Perhaps the letting go and the making of space was the computer glitch creating a scramble for material, perhaps it was Son allowing someone else to produce aloha. Enter producer Renaud Letang (Feist, Manu Chao), allowing the intimacy and soul of the work to be easily found with interesting nuances on tracks and transitions. The digital beats, synths, and effects are very human and subtly balanced low in the mix to retain the warmth of the music. With a voice so silky and sublime, he does not need to growl or power into the mic with his lyrics covering, mostly, life's ups and downs. You might be interested in knowing that the tenancy laws have recently changed so that stating "'property not suitable for dogs'" is an act of discrimination.
