04 We Create and Craft

We absolutely love seeing Bex Lismer’s crafty dressing-up portraits on her Instagram page. Bex (known as Pigeon to her many followers) is the self-taught crocheter and fibre artist behind the brand, The Pigeon’s Nest, and the maker of our lovely autumnal crochet bag project on page 62. As well as selling her colourful crochet creations and kits, Bex has taken her crochet skills to a new level, creating some familiar characters and celebrities on her social media channels. From David Bowie to Disney princesses, she creates a whole host of great costumes as part of her '#pigeonportrays' project. “The project came out of needing a headshot for a piece of work I was doing back in 2016,” she says. “I whipped up a basic Rosie the Riveter and enjoyed it so much that it has become one of the cornerstones of my creative content. I rarely buy any special costume, as I just transform things from my wardrobe or craft supplies. Every portrait has a yarn element, and trying to decide what that will be is always such fun!''

We had a great time seeing so many of you at Crafting Live Doncaster in July. It was a wonderful day, packed with workshops, exhibitors and crafting celebrity guests. And just as one finishes, we can’t wait to welcome you to another! You can now get your tickets for Crafting Live Peterborough As usual, there will be an abundance of creative fun, with plenty of time to shop, make, socialise and more. You can stock up on all of your craft essentials, as well as find inspiration from brand-new products and watch on-stand demonstrations. There are also several refreshment options and areas to have a much-needed sit down after all that shopping! This year’s Peterborough event will take place on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd October from 10am-5pm, in the Exhibition Hall & Atrium of East of England Arena. We can’t wait to see you!

Paula Pascual “There’s no such thing as a craft disaster! No one knows what the project was meant to look like, so style it out!”

We Create and Craft 05

“After spending hours working with clay to create a miniature version of my neighbour’s dog as a surprise, I slowly took it to the oven. But as I carefully placed it inside, the fan in the oven blew it over and it fell to pieces! I did manage to save it by putting cocktail sticks in the legs to reinforce them, then returned it to the oven, but this time with the fan off and the dog laid on its side so it was more stable. So, don’t panic –there’s always a way to save it when things feel as though they are going wrong!”

Crafting disasters... Yes, we all have them! Despite our crafting experience and prowess, sometimes projects just don’t go to plan! We asked our Create and Craft presenters to share some of their most memorable mishaps and to offer some wise words to remind ourselves for when things might not go our way.

Jubileearts

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee certainly had many of you crafting and we just loved seeing all your projects via the Editor’s inbox. In Oundle, home of the Create and Craft HQ, the local crafting community got to work to celebrate the occasion, blanketing the town centre with a whole host of amazing projects! We were royally impressed!

“I think my worst crafting disaster recently was an on-air one. During a Tonic Studios show with Jodie Johnson I managed to knock down an entire pack shot with one movement live on camera. I knocked something off the top shelf and it just tumbled down and down, taking everything else with it. Luckily, Jodie just laughed but it was mortifying for me. And I obviously had to apologise to Magic Hands as they had to completely rebuild it during the show."

Janice Phillips

If you can’t get enough of crafting events this year, Crafterama is also taking place on 10-11 September at the YEC at Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate, while Stamperama will be at Bedford International Athletic Stadium on September 25th and Newcastle Racecourse on 9th October. Come along and enjoy the workshops and demonstrations. Crafterama is set to be a real celebration of art stamps, mixed media, art journalling, die cutting, découpage, beading, resin art, needle felting and so much more to see, learn and buy. Purchase your tickets and see more information at createandcraft.com

Nigel May “The one that comes to mind is when I was actually on air with Tsukineko inks demonstrating shrink plastic. Stupidly I did too big of a piece and took so long to do it, it was embarrassing! Thank goodness Adam H and I could just make a joke and laugh about it! Which I suppose it’s the lesson here. Just laugh about it and learn never to do it again! Laugh and learn from it!”

Jan Singleton loves making cards designed by Dreaming Tree. “I have been shielding since March 2020 (and am still shielding!) because my hubby is in the ‘extremely vulnerable’ category, so my crafting has kept me sane, and I’ve learnt so many crafts since then. These cards take a couple of days to create with the help of my digital cutting machine, but they are always well received. This particular one has a matching stand too.”

“I TURNED MY HOBBY INTO A SMALL BUSINESS”

“I first learned jewellery making from my nan when I was a child. Since then, I have continued to explore and grow my interest and education in jewellery making by doing soldering and ring-making courses and experimenting with resin jewellery. This hobby has turned into a part-time business for me, where I sell on Etsy and do many craft fairs and I absolutely love doing it! You can find all my makes on my Instagram @cgdesignsboutique.”

Chloe Greenwood

Sarah Camara created these gorgeous nature inspired projects using the magic

Wow! We’re really impressed by these makes by Club Member Ana Vitorino, who taught herself needle felting. “My journey in needle felting started some years ago when I came across a video from a Chinese artist called Wakuneco; she creates the most beautiful cats. I watched online tutorials for beginners and, even after many mistakes and stabbed fingers, I never stopped challenging myself to more complex projects. Now here I am, still learning, still challenging myself each day but loving every minute of it.”

Vacay vibes

Dino devotee

“I enjoyed making these after seeing Helen Kirkman's in the summer edition of Craft Club magazine.”

Flowers of happiness

Eleanor Smith is an engineer from Stamford, Lincolnshire. “A year ago, my nana started teaching me to knit. We began with a blanket of different patterned squares and next a jumper. I then decided dinosaurs were the way forward. The great thing about them is you can use whatever size, colour and oddment of yarn you have. I find it really relaxing and my brain is able to switch off from everything else to focus on the pattern. I’ve been busy making all my family and friends their favourite dinosaurs!”

Quilting craze

“I’M SO GRATEFUL FOR THE CRAFTING COMMUNITY”

It seems many of you have been busy enjoying a spot of patchwork and quilting over recent months. We love seeing your handiwork and were particularly impressed by these beautiful bedspreads. Sue Randall made a quilt for her sister's 60th birthday. “I used Sarah Payne's Birds of Paradise fabric for the main panels and my Brother NV2650D sewing and embroidery machine to embroider a panel on the back with my sister's name and birthday.”

Liz Burnell is now hooked on quilting thanks to a demo by Kathryn Sturrock. “I just finished my Crocheted Fusion Summer Quilt. After watching a recent demo by the lovely Kathryn, I was inspired to make one of these lovely quilts. I have made many crocheted blankets before but never knew how to combine the crochet with patchwork. Kathryn explained it so well and made it look achievable so I thought I would have a go. It is so addictive – I now want to make another!”

We always love to see your latest makes and find out what’s been inspiring you this season. Here’s a few of our favourite summertime projects that you’ve sent in.

Ocean dreaming

Linda Roberts is feeling tropical with her underwater scene. “I really enjoy papercrafting, and I especially like to make cards with die cuts. My favourite brand is Sizzix; I used their Under the Sea Thinlits Colorize die sets by Tim Holtz to make this card, which has a summery feeling.”

Margret from Dorking, Surrey says that she lost her husband in a car accident a few years ago and has since found a huge comfort in crafting. “I found it really helped me to focus on a project, and I have met some wonderful friends as a result. I enjoy making cards for my loved ones and seeing their reaction to my creations. I recently attended Crafting Live and had a lovely day. The crafters I met there were so friendly; they shared their stories with me and gave me lots of inspiration. I’m not an expert by any means, but that didn’t matter to them. I’m so grateful for the many wonderful crafters I’ve met so far who have helped me along the way and welcomed me into the crafting community.”

Who wouldn’t be delighted to receive this cheery greeting from a loved one! Becky White made it using Lisa Horton products from Create and Craft. “I mostly make cards for friends, family and charity. I made this card after being inspired by one of the design team members in Lisa Horton's Facebook group. I used the following of her products: Padded Quilt embossing folder, Summer Wreath die set and Bold Words die set.”

Summertime magic

Inspired by last issue, Sharon Bowers from Houghton created her own holiday scenes with these cheery cards.

I have been writing a lot of recipes. Two books have been published since my appearance in the show, plus a lot of magazine/newspaper recipe writing and a few TV appearances – all really good fun.

As the bonkers Spaniard who entered a quintessentially British show and decided every week’s challenge was a Halloween challenge. I still don’t understand how the British public got so on board with it!

“Spooky bakes are not just for Halloween”

I truly believe if you are creative in the kitchen, that gets applied to everything else you may want to make. What's best about crafting and baking?

What have you been up to since Bake Off?

Helena Garcia’s passion for all things wonderfully wicked and witchy is evident in all of her crafty creations. Having wowed viewers in Season 10 of The Great British Bake Off with her Halloween-inspired bakes, the Spanishborn baker has gone on to acquire more than 100K social media followers, published two books and cameoed in a multi-Emmy award winning hit US TV comedy series. If that wasn’t enough, she also has her own online store –selling her handmade jewellery and fashion accessories, gifts and more.  In the spirit of the spooky season, we caught up with Helena for a chat. We loved seeing you and your memorable creations on The Great British Bake Off; but to the few who may not know you, how would you introduce yourself?

The end results. There’s no satisfaction like admiring the product of your hard work. What got you in to baking and crafting?

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

I really want to learn to use a pottery wheel. My husband booked me onto a course that starts in September. What would you say to anyone looking to get into crafting? Stick to it because it is all about perseverance. If I can bake, so can you!

NIVENPATRICIABYPHOTOS

You’ve published three amazing crafting books (one prior to Bake Off). What inspired you to create them? It was simply a way to put together everything I loved doing, from potion making, cooking, or sewing to making hats. I am fascinated by shamanism and how witches are portrayed in art, literature and popular culture and I love introducing a witchy touch into everything I do. Do you have a crafting tool that you couldn’t live without?

A good pair of scissors!

Are there any crafts or new craft trends you’d love to try that you haven’t yet?

Do you have any guilty pleasures when it comes to baking and crafting? Giving everything I do a spooky touch is certainly an obsession and a pleasure, but not a guilty one!

It’s just something that I’ve loved doing since childhood. While my sister was partying all night, I was sat at the kitchen table painting or modelling with clay.

Recently I purchased the most beautiful Victorian Manor in Yorkshire and I’ve been renovating it... sanding floorboards... stripping years of paint from skirting boards... all the glamorous stuff!

We chat to self-confessed Queen of Halloween, Helena Garcia – crafty author and contestant on TV’s The Great British Bake Off, who bewitched fans with her love of all things spooky

Cooking/baking are up there for sure, but I like to dip into anything and everything.

3 Add stored image AR-O109 on the ScanNCut, resize to 2.25" x 1.45" and cut from brown card. Select the offset line function and create an offset line of +0.08" and cut from tan card. Glue the two layers together and add the medium pearls to the owl. Using a foam pad, add the owl to the tag and glue the largest pearls to the top of the tag. Add a loop of twine to the top of the tag to finish. The offset button on the ScanNCut is in the edit page and it looks like two circles, one around the other If you aren’t sure about stamping the ink pad straight on to your card, you could always use tape to create squares and stamp the pad inside the square When stamping the leaf stamp on to the ink pad square, you may find it easier to use a stamping platform to ensure they line up

Wrapping paper

1 Add stored image AR-K002 on the ScanNCut, resize to 7.30" x 3.33" and cut from white card. Stamp out the smaller ink pads and stamp the smaller leaf over the ink squares, as with the card.

Finger lift tape is essentially double-sided tape with a dry edge either side of the adhesive strip which makes it easy to peel the tape from the backing

On the ScanNCut, add stored image AR-O109 (owl), resize to 2.50" x 1.61" and cut from brown card. Select the offset line function and create an offset line of +0.07" and cut from tan card. Glue the two layers together and add the smallest pearls to the owl. Glue the topper on a slant onto the card then add the owl to the topper using a foam pad. Glue the medium pearls to the corners of the card.

1 Cut the postage paper to the size you need for your gift. Stamp out the larger ink pads all over the paper, allow them to dry. Stamp the larger leaf over the top of the ink squares. Once the ink is dry, wrap your gift.

3 Cut brown card measuring 7" x 3" and glue to the front of the card. Stamp the leaf stamp on to the postage paper. Tear part of the paper and glue to the corner of the card.

Mist the page with water and leave to dry. 2 Die cut five leaves from pink card. Gently blend Picked Raspberry ink through the bubble stencil onto them. Score the leaves through the middle and ink the edges with the Seedless Preserve pad to add definition. 3 Take three sheets of card in brown, tan and orange and cut to 10" x 2". Score each of them at 1" along the long side and concertina. Take the Seedless Preserve ink pad and swipe along the edges of the card. Cut the ends diagonally. 4 Add glue on the first section and on the valley fold lines. Stick onto the layout as shown, brown at the top then orange then tan. 5 Tie a bow with twine to one of the leaves and stick it to the top left with glue. Adhere the other leaves in a cascading fashion. 6 Cut two photos to 2” x 4” and the larger one to 4" x 4". Take the Fossilized Amber Distress Oxide ink pad and press directly below the ink pad at the top. Repeat to make a line of squares. Print three more lines of ink squares in Spiced Marmalade, Crackling Campfire, and Seedless Preserve Distress Oxide. 2 Stamp the hot drink image using the Versafine Ink towards the bottom right of the page.

8 To finish, use a blender brush to add Frayed Burlap Distress Oxide ink through the coffee stains stencil just above the stamped image and to the left of it.

3 Stamp the hot drink image three more times on watercolour card. Fussy cut the cup image. Use a water brush and the Distress Oxide inks to colour it in. Fussy cut the foliage part from the other two stamped images, colour one in the same way and leave one with no colour. Stamp the mug from the stamp set and fussy cut it.

Dip all the fronts of the letters into the Versamark Watermark ink pad, ensuring the edges are coated and cover with black embossing powder. Use the heat tool to melt the powder and you’ll be left with glossy letters.

7 Print your photo to 5" square and stick so that it’s slightly on the black circle with glue. Glue the wording around the photo to frame it.

5 Stick the black circle on top of the stamped cup image with glue. Adhere the mug on the right side of the circle with the foliage below it. Stick the uncoloured foliage to the bottom left of the circle. Add double-sided foam tape to the main hot drinks cup and adhere on top of the circle.

6 Die cut the words yummy and HOT CHOC from card a number of times and stick together with glue to create thick raised letters.

4 Die cut a 3.5" circle from black card and spatter with white paint and make sure it dries.

Fold along the dotted lines firmly to create a crisp fold. Cut out any empty white spaces from within the printed work. 2 Glue each of the two attach ments to the lower and upper parts of the card, using the pink area on the main page as a guide. For each page and attachment, the corners and main centre folds should line up. Ensure the glue is placed in the corners and along the edge of the folds. The two folds of the lower pop-up attachment look like the letter Z. 3 Fold back the tabs of the lower attachment and slip through the hole in the upper attachment. Fold the tabs back to the original position. For a more successful ‘pop’, just add a blank layer of card to the back of the pop-up – this strengthens the design. Close the card and open to show the secluded pop-up dormouse nest. is a cosy dormouse that needs a little more skill, whilst the second is an adorable badger, which is perfect for beginners. Both, however, are simple projects that are sure to inspire your own pop-up designs.

Leonie Pujol, Presenter Crafty motto: Love the process and have some fun with it! I ran riot colouring the lady's hair on my card. I almost went with a 'normal' shade, but felt she really needed a little colour and sparkle. I imagined she was about to go out trick or treating, so of course she needed some crazy, magical hair for this! Made for: My mum! Message to Yiannis: Show us yer pumpkins!

My top tip: If you’re not confident with colouring, use watercolour pencils and a water brush to blend them. It makes shading really easy. Plus, don't forget to add a sprinkling of mystical shimmer with the Pentel glittery pens.

My top tip: Remember when writing a sentiment with Groovi, you are working back to front – guess who forgot this and had to start again! Also, when embossing, build up slowly and let the parchment rest before going back to do more. If you look closely you'll see my white work is, excuse the pun, a work in progess, but it's a process that I have really enjoyed.

Autumn Challenge

About the make: This is a nice simple card using a combination of stamps and gorgeous Graphic 45 papers, with a touch of Vintage Photo distress ink to add aged character to the die cuts. I love an excuse to rummage through my Graphic 45 stash, and I enjoy adding a personal touch to my makes by experimenting with stamp and ink effects!

We had so much fun with our battle of the presenters in the last issue, we just had to give it another go. This time, Yiannis Morgan and Leonie Pujol are up for the challenge. Armed with the contents of their own stash, each has created a greeting for your viewing pleasure – but who will be the winner? It’s up to you, so pick your favourite and vote today!

Last issue, we challenged presenters Dan Bancroft and Janice Phillips to create a card using the Hobby House Magnolia Blossoms card making kit. A huge thanks to everyone who voted for their favourite, but the winner was… Mr. Bancroft. Congratulations Dan! Your votes were entered into the prize draw, and we’re pleased to announce that the winner of £50 to spend at Create and Craft is Carol Finch. We also gave one lucky winner the chance to win the card kit and so, Sue Cullen, your kit is on its way to you!

About the make: I decided to use my Groovi parchment starter kit for this make. I love the Groovi system so much. I explored emboss work and colour in the piece. I was really chuffed with how it came out.

Your chance to win!

Message to Leonie: I think we are all agreed there can only be one winner here. I love Leonie, she is a great friend, a truly wonderful human being and, of course, an incredibly gifted crafter. I entered this knowing I wouldn't beat her, but I have really enjoyed taking part.

3 Now assemble your card. I used one sheet of Graphic 45 paper, which gave me embellishments and decorative paper! I used glue for my matt and layers, plus foam pads to add dimension to some of my layers. Curl a few of the embellishments to give your card more movement. For the witch's hat, I cut a scrap of paper, and inked the edges. Finish with a trio of pearls and a ribbon tie.

I used a Graphic 45 collection I had squirrelled away. Cut out your chosen embellishments and colour the edges using the Vintage Photo distress ink. 2 Stamp your lady image and fussy cut her out. The hair is easy to cut around, you don’t need to worry about the strands. I spent some time colouring the image, having great fun giving her wild and fabulous purple locks. Add little cobwebs with fine liner pen for a spooky effect. Join in the fun! Fancy pitting your creative talents against our team? We’d love to see if you’ve got what it takes!

After colouring the design using Perga Liners, I embossed the trees and lettering using my number 3 and 4 ball tool. I also used a drop of Dorso oil on a tissue to spread and blend the Perga Liner pencils, giving a beautiful smooth finish.

3 To attach the parchment, I scored the top to fold over and stuck it to the matt, made with Clarity designer papers, then matted this to pink card. As the size of the card wasn't standard, I scored and created my own card blank. I matted the topper onto this and also applied glue underneath the butterfly. I finished it off with a little glitter glue on the trees and butterfly.

2 Peel back the clear film on one side of the pink wax and push the narrow end of the pick-up tool into it, twisting back and forth a few times so a small amount enters the opening on the metal tip of the pick-up tool. Make sure that a bit of wax sticks out of the top but not too much. You can add more wax as needed throughout your project.

3 Peel back the film from a section of the card where you would like to begin and decide what crystal colour to start with, referring to the chart included. Don’t peel the whole film off at once as this will expose the adhesive surface to dust and make it less effective. This will also prevent your hand sticking to it and removing the glue.

1 Open your kit and lay out the contents in front of you. Placing everything on a large tray is a good idea to make tidy-up a breeze.

7 After completing the card, you may like to seal it to protect your work. Take a fine paintbrush and paint Crystal Art Sealer lightly over the whole surface. Only apply a thin layer and ensure the sealer goes around the bottom edges of the crystals. Take a wet wipe and gently remove any excess sealer from the top of the crystals to restore the shine. You will be left with white sealer in between the crystals, which will dry clear within 4-6 hours and seal your work perfectly. 1 To make the large gingerbread man, use the template provided in the kit and pin to a section of amber coloured felt. Cut around the template line to create your gingerbread man shape. Remove the pins and template.

4 Complete the small gingerbread man with running stitch around its edges, adding a 30cm length of 3mm wide cord into the head and between the two layers of felt. This will conceal the raw edges of the cord. Hang the charm onto the stocking’s loop when all has been completed.

2 To make the small gingerbread man charm, follow the steps above. This time, cut two layers of amber felt to create a back and front.

Before assembling the stocking, appliqué the large gingerbread man to what will be the front. Pin him onto the front section and add a large running stitch around the perimeter of the gingerbread man. This should be 3mm away from the raw edge and 3mm apart. Before you completely close, leave a small opening and add a light amount of toy stuffing into the man for a 3D effect. Finish by closing.

7 Pin all four stocking sections together and layer in the following way: lining sections right sides facing followed by the body sections layered on top again with right sides facing. Pin to secure. Machine stitch around the outer edge 1cm away from the raw edge. Leave the top of the stocking open as this will allow you to turn the work through. Once you have stitched the stocking, trim the seam allowance to 5mm away from the freshly stitched seam line. This will help produce a better shape when turned through.

8 Turn the stocking through. As you have stitched the body and lining sections together, you will find that the seam allowance or raw edges have magically disappeared when you turn through. The two body sections should now be on the outside and the lining sections encased within the stocking.

Press flat and place to one side.

9 Using a fabric pen mark out a section of faux fur measuring 10cm x 38cm. Make sure the fur hair direction is running away from one of the longest edges. Bring together the two 10cm edges and machine sew 5mm away from the raw edges (fur sides together). You will have created a fur tube or cuff.

12 To finish the stocking simply turn over the fur cuff to expose the hair and hang up

7 Next, line up the centre front and centre back points with seam points A and C on the body and pin in place. Pin (and tack if wished) all the way around the base, attaching the base to the body, and sew round with a 1cm seam allowance. Leave a nice big gap along one edge. Turn the hedgehog through.

4 Place one end of the fabric strip on one of the pen lines and, using your central stitch line, stitch the fabric sandwich along the pen line. Keep any offcuts. Repeat this process until all of the pen lines are stitched with fabric. As you add more strips, the process will become harder so just take your time. Once you have stitched over the lines, use the offcuts (or cut more strips if necessary) to fill in the gaps so the back of the hedgehog is nice and full. The fuller the back, the harder it will be to sew on the strips.

5 Once you are happy with your strips, use sharp scissors to snip into the fabric. Cut vertically into the strips to create tabs. Be careful not to snip your stitches. Repeat this process until all of the fabric strips are cut. This will now allow the body shape to become nice and round.

8 Using the toy stuffing, stuff the hedgehog’s body to your desired fullness. Be sure to push the stuffing right into the tip of the nose and also to support the curve of the back. Once the hedgehog is stuffed, stitch up the gap with a neat slip stitch.

8 For the skirt and bib frill, use the gathering technique between each seam on the strips so you have four sets of gathering stitches. This will help to create even gathers. Pin the bib frill around the top part of the apron right sides together at the raw edges. To create an even frill, pin the sides and middle first, then ease in pinning all the way round. Stitch together. Press seam allowance inwards and topstitch on right side close to seam. Repeat for skirt frill. 9 Place the neck straps approx. 7cm from the middle on each side, 4cm down, on the wrong side of the apron and stitch down, creating a rectangle of stitches with a cross through its centre (box X stitch) to reinforce them. Repeat for the waist straps laying them over the waist seam right side to wrong side. The waist straps are long enough to be tied at the front in a bow, or at the back, as you prefer. Give your apron a final press.

7 Starting with the skirt piece, gather the top waist edge until it measures 31cm. Pin this to the top bib waist edge right sides together and stitch together. Press seam allowance upwards. Topstitch on right side of bib just above waist seam.

Helping Hand Gathering technique: change your machine stitch to the longest length possible. Starting along the length that needs gathering, sew two lines of stitches one 0.5cm in and one 1cm in, leaving long strands of thread at each end. Separate the bobbin thread from the top thread. Hold one of these tight whilst sliding the fabric along the rows of stitches and you should get gathers forming. With a bit of patience, you can spread these evenly along the length of create pockets stitch pocket band (if using) to top edge of pocket piece right sides together. Fold band wrong sides together and press so long edge is just below stitch line and press. Topstitch pocket piece on right side just below seam line. Snip around pocket edges (to approx. 1cm in). Fold wrong sides together with a seam allowance of 1.5cm, taking care as you press corners to create a smooth curve. Pin pockets to apron skirt approx 7cm in and 15cm down from the top corners. Topstitch around 0.5cm from the edges to secure to the skirt

We just love the leafy autumnal theming of this retro-inspired pinny, but you can use any fabrics to personalise it to you and your desired colour scheme. 1 Using your paper, make the following pattern pieces then cut out in your fabric of choice. Main fabric for apron: top bib 31cm wide x 31cm long square –round off top corners; apron skirt 52cm wide x 41cm long rectangle – round off bottom corners; 2 x pockets 18cm wide x 15cm long – round off bottom corners. Plain fabric for straps and ties: 2 x waist ties 9cm wide x 1m long; 2 x neck ties 7cm wide x 60cm long Contrasting fabric for frills and pocket bands: 4 x skirt frill 10cm wide x 72cm long; 4 x bib frill 7cm wide x 41cm long; 2 x pocket bands 5cm wide x 18cm long (optional) 2 Prepare the frill pieces. Sew the four strips for the skirt frill and bib frills together at the short sides. Press seams open. Hem one long edge of each set – press 0.5cm wrong sides together then fold over again another 1cm, press and hem. 3 Repeat this hemming process for the waist straps, pressing and sewing all four sides 4 For the neck straps press a fold, wrong sides together, 1cm wide around all edges. Fold strap in half lengthways and press flat. Stitch down the long edges 0.5cm from the edge.

4For the face detail, glue the eyes into place first. Add wool in your chosen colour between the eyes to build the cheeks and nose, then add two small balls of wool under the nose and a small triangular shaped piece under the two balls and this forms the basic shape of the bottom of the cat's face. Glue on the nose. Build around the eyes adding more wool and shaping around them so they are not sticking out. Once you’re happy with how they look, add a few strands of black wool to line the eyes. Keep adding wool and shaping where necessary.

6 Join the head to the body by stabbing them together. Add wool to build up the neck.

Attach them to the head by felting them on.

You can always make any adjustments to the shapes by adding extra wool or extra stabbing to reduce areas. Once the cat‘s body is all joined together, cover the body with the chosen fur colour and add any colouring details, such as a tail tip or patch on the cat’s paw.

Create the brim of the hat from a circle of black felt. Felt the pointed section to the brim. Cut two small slits into the brim to allow the ears to poke through. Cut a small strip of black felt and attach the buckle with a dot of glue and with more stabbing, then felt it on to the hat.

9 Form a pumpkin made by shaping a ball of orange wool; decide where the ridges should be then shape it by going over certain areas or adding extra bits of wool to create the ridges until you get the desired effect. Ensure you leave a gap between the rows to form the bat shape to the wings. Don’t pull on the knots too tightly, this will also help with forming the shape. Continue until you have four rows in total. Repeat this step to make the second wing the opposite way.

By simply scoring and folding coloured card stock, you can create these really funky Halloween paper fans. Use them as wall or window decs or why not mount the fans along string to form bunting?

7 To hang the decorations, punch a hole near the top of the circle and thread a loop of ribbon through.

2 If you want to decorate the card stock with stamps or a border die or punch, do this before scoring. To decorate with stamps, choose three or four Halloween themed images and randomly stamp all over each piece of the card stock. You may also wish to include a patterned edge. To do so, use a border die or decorative punch along one length of the card stock. Again, do this before moving on to the scoring.

Die cut two circles that will fit nicely in the centre of the fan from a coordinating colour of card stock. Decorate the circles with some Halloween die cut shapes or stamped images.

6 Now is the tricky part, you need to push down on the folded card stock at one end so it will spring into a rosette shape. Hold the fan in place with something with a bit of weight to it. Meanwhile apply hot glue to the wrong side of one of the die cut circles and place onto the centre of the paper fan and hold it down until the glue grabs (be careful though, the glue will be hot). When the first circle has held, flip the fan over and glue the second circle to the reverse to give the fan stability and prevent it coming undone.
