5 CPR for cables Most cables designed for permanent installation within domestic, residential and commercial buildings are now subject to the Construction Products Regulation (CPR), covered by BS EN 50575. This became a legal requirement in July 2017 so it’s important you understand how to stay compliant. BS EN 50575 enables designers and installers to consider the contribution that cables make to the spread of fire. Cables are a particular concern as they run between rooms and floors, above ceilings and are often made from flammable materials. They can also be a source of ignition if badly installed, damaged or faulty.

The classes The regulation classifies products into one of seven Euroclasses, but in most instances only options B2ca to Fca will apply to cables. (Classes B1ca and Aca may be used in commercial / industrial applications) Fire performance: high level of flammability under simple test and burns over 425mm. Tests: BS EN 60332-1-2 (basic vertical flame test by factory or lab). FSC Comment: Cables classified to Class Fca may have high levels of flammability due to the materials they are made of or their designs. For example, cables with a PE sheath that are primarily intended for outside use, such as telephone or duct grade cable, could be tested and classified to Class Fca. Fire performance: limited fire spread under test and burns less than 425mm. Tests: BS EN 60332-1-2 (by an authorised test house, known as a Notified Body - NB). FSC Comment: Although this is the least expensive test by an approved independent test body (NB), it still costs many hundreds of pounds. It’s likely that many cables sold in small volumes will only be tested to this class for commercial reasons. Note that this test does not measure heat release, toxic fumes or smoke. Classes Dca, Cca and B2ca also apply to cables. The following classes also have additional tests to measure heat generated smoke release and can be further tested for smoke density, acidity of gas given off and burning droplets falling from the cable. Fire performance: moderate fire spread and potentially high levels of heat generated. Tests: BS EN 60332-1-2 and BS EN 50399, including smoke generation. Additional tests: Smoke test, optional flaming droplets and acidity tests. FSC Comment: This is an expensive test, costing thousands of pounds, but does not have regular re-test or factory audit costs. Fire performance: reduced flame spread, limited fire growth/heat release. Tests: BS EN 60332-1-2 and BS EN 50399, including smoke generation. Additional tests: Smoke test, optional flaming droplets and acidity tests. FSC Comment: More rigorous test and higher cost than Class Dca but with the additional cost of regular, independent factory inspections, audits and periodic retesting. This is widely accepted across Europe as the ‘go to’ standard, but be aware that many cables in their current form may not meet Class Cca without costly redesign. Fire performance: low flame spread, minimal fire growth & heat release. Tests: BS EN 60332-1-2 and BS EN 50399, including smoke generation. Additional tests: Smoke test, optional flaming droplets and acidity tests. FSC Comment: Similar to Class Cca with lower acceptable heat release rate and burn measurement. Regular factory audits and re-testing add to the cost. In practice, this is likely to be the highest CPR class general application cables will meet. It’s unlikely that any commercial cables will be available to Class B1ca or Aca, simply due to the materials they are made of and lack of demand.

6 Who’s responsible? In the UK it’s up to the designer, specifier or installer to satisfy themselves that the products chosen are appropriate for the application and meet any contractual requirements. It’s important to note that at the moment, CPR-classified products can be used within the UK, whatever their Euroclass - providing that they are contractually acceptable. When specifying cable in the UK, take care to assess the risk of fire within a building and the potential ease of evacuation. Airports, hospitals, prisons, tunnels and high rise buildings all offer their own unique challenges and should be assessed individually.

Which class? In some parts of Europe, the national regulatory body is defining which Euroclass should be used in a specific building or application; the UK has not taken this approach. The publication of the 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations July 2018 does not specify Euroclasses for specific applications, however some supplementary standards such as BS 6701:2016+A1:2017 do specify Euroclasses. Specifiers and installers need to ensure the cables they select are appropriate for the fire risk in the building or application and any contractual terms. The publication of BS 6701:2016+A1:2017 gives specifiers, consultants and installers a set of guidelines for telecommunications cables and could be used to form the basis of a commercial contract, although this is supplementary to the IET Wiring Regulations. CPR does not outlaw the use of cables that emit excessive amounts of toxic fumes and smoke in the event of a fire. It’s down to the specifier to select suitable product, such as Low Smoke Halogen Free (LSHF) versions. Circuit integrity cables, such as fire alarm cable (i.e. FP200), are not covered by CPR - this is likely to be some years away.

Stay compliant Declaration of performance Cables manufactured after July 2017 intended for permanent installation within a domestic, residential or commercial building, or any other civil structure, should have a Declaration of Performance (DoP) available. This document shows critical information such as:

Glossary

PVC

POLYVINYL CHLORIDE PVC cables offer good flexibility and performance at low cost, ideal for most applications around the home.

LSHF

LOW SMOKE HALOGEN FREE LSHF cables are those which emit minimal levels of toxic fumes and smoke (0.5%) in the event of fire. They are ideal for installations near sensitive electronic equipment or in areas that may be difficult to evacuate. Always check that cables sold as LSHF are throughout – jacket and cores.

LSF

LOW SMOKE & FUME LSF is a modified PVC compound which gives off less toxic fumes and smoke than PVC in the event of fire. Not to be confused with LSHF cables, LSF cables should be regarded as only slightly better than PVC cables in the event of fire.

POLYETHYLENE PE is a form of thermoplastic that offers excellent resistance to moisture and abrasion. Cables with PE jackets are suitable for external applications.

DUCT GRADE PE Our duct and external grade cables feature a tough, water and UV resistant polyethylene (PE) jacket over the standard cable. They are suited for external installations such as through ducts or clipped to the outside of buildings.

SWA

STEEL WIRE ARMOUR Steel wire armour (SWA) cables are ideal for fixed installations or direct burial in the ground where additional mechanical protection is required.

OFC

OXYGEN FREE COPPER OFC uses 99.99% pure electrolytic copper conductors to achieve lower resistance and improved sound quality. Our TruSound range use OFC for optimum performance.

CCA COPPER CLAD ALUMINIUM CCA is an aluminium conductor or braid wire coated with a thin layer of copper to give the appearance of copper but with electrical characteristics closer to aluminium. There are some applications where CCA conductors are incorporated into the cable design, however none of the cables in this catalogue use CCA. Great effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information in this catalogue. However products may vary due to manufacturing changes, technical improvements and commercial factors. In particular, overall diameters and weights are given for guidance only and if critical, they should be confirmed at time of order. Developed from the American market, these cables use 16AWG, 14AWG or 12AWG oxygen free copper conductors, free from talcum and features a quick strip jacket for easy installation. Clearly identified by their distinctive colour and printing, they are widely used in commercial and high-end residential installations. Also manufactured using halogen free materials for both the jacket and core insulation, these versions are ideal for commercial installations requiring Low Smoke Halogen Free (LSHF) cables. OFC Multicore Round Black Duct Grade Speaker Cable

This range of external grade speaker cables is suitable to be either run through ducts or clipped to buildings or other exposed areas when an armoured cables not required. The cables are rated to 0.6/1kV and have XLPE insulation, a water blocking gel tape, PVC bedding and a UV stable black polyethylene sheath which also gives additional mechanical strength and water resistance. The colour code is conventional for simple wiring and despite their toughness they remain remarkably flexible. The gel tape remains dry until exposed to water when it swells to form a water barrier. This prevents any mess during termination normally associated with petroleum gel filled cables. The cable is stocked on bulk drums and can be cut to length to reduce your wastage and save time. If these cables require added protection we can also armour them with MOQs as low as a hundred metres CONSTRUCTION Plain copper wire conductors to IEC/BS EN 60228 class 5, XLPE colour coded insulation, water blocking tape, bedding compound of PVC, UV resistant polyethylene sheath.

Duct Grade & SWA Duct grade cables are made with a tough, water resistant polyethylene (PE) jacket over an inner PVC jacket. They are ideally suited for external installations where the cable may be run through ducts or clipped to buildings. The double jacket protects against moisture, provides excellent UV protection and gives the cable extra strength.

Where you need even more protection, SWA, or steel wire armoured cables, are great for direct burial. The external grade heavy PE jacket offers the same weather protection as the duct grade alternative, however the galvanised steel wire armour safeguards the cable from mechanical or rodent damage and makes it suitable for fixed installations.
