WHEN UPKEEP IS FULFILLING “The best thing for a trail is use,” Martin says. “To use it is to love it, and once that love deepens, the maintenance is easy. We have multiple clients who run major corporations. When they are out on their property, they release the pressures of their everyday work by improving a creek crossing, clearing a view spot or moving a fallen tree. It is gratifying labor with immediate results.”

“To be outdoors on one’s land is an enriching way to connect to nature, but also loved ones.” This is the thought that drives Randy Martin and his team at Trailscape, who create intricate bespoke paths for properties throughout California. “We carve out sustainable trails that protect from fire and encourage full enjoyment of natural spaces,” Martin says. While the first of those benefits is no small thing—Trailscape creations helped to save seven separate homes during the recent Glass Fire in St. Helena and Sonoma—the second is the philosophy in which the firm’s work is rooted. “We connect what exists, however impassable, with what is waiting just beyond to be experienced, explored and managed for human flourishing.” Turning the corner to be surprised by a unique-looking branch; unexpectedly finding a light-filled clearing surrounded by towering trees … these are the moments of small joy Trailscape aims to bring.

“A well-planned trail is a portal, inviting one to fully step into the unmatched beauty of nature.”

PERSONALIZED PATHWAYS A good trail design will consider … • Age: When it comes to designing a trail, thought must be given to the user. A trail to attract grandchildren, providing opportunities for small discoveries and delights, is going to be quite different from a path that efficiently guides one to various outbuildings. • Activities: How people will use the space is, of course, also important. “If our client wants to do a lot of hiking, we’ll make their trail a little straighter and steeper than we would for a family of runners,” Martin says. “And a cycling trail meanders and undulates more, including wide, round turns.”

Top, left: Trails are a relaxing way to take in an incredible view. Left: When flames were roaring through this area, the client was able to hose them down 40 feet from the home, where they were contained thanks to Trailscape’s work. Top, right: This trail in Calistoga is a meandering celebration of the wild surroundings. Top, left: Photography by Left: Photography by Top, right: Photography by

ARCHITECTS of Southern California 1920-1940: Paul R. Williams BY KATHY BRYANT

32 | CALIFORNIA HOMES

The Architect THE TWELVE-VOLUME series Master Architects of Southern California 1920-1940 Is a long overdue undertaking that honors architects working in Southern California between the World Wars when the area was booming with enthusiasm and wealth. As the authors say in their dedication, these architects’ talent and vision continue to inspire and guide us today. This volume focuses on Paul R. Williams, the first African American member and fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and a vital figure in the architecture of Southern California. His life story is like a Hollywood rags-to-riches movie, which is ironic because he designed houses for many celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz and Lon Chaney, among many others. He was called the master of “creative eclecticism” by architect Jeh Vincent Johnson, who worked with him. This book quotes Williams as saying, “Good design is a pleasing assemblage of parts; not the assemblage of pleasing parts. You can put a beautiful fireplace, a lovely credenza, first-rate antiques from Europe all together, and have a secondhand store.” That never happened in Williams’ work since he was able to bring together interior and exterior spaces and create a perfect environments that delighted his clients. “Williams’ inspirational story is remarkable for so many reasons,”says co-author Gee. “He overcame obstacles not faced by many of his colleagues, but he was also an innovator who has not been given the credit he deserves.” “He’s the king when it comes to residential architects from Southern California’s Golden Age,” says Parsons. All that is what makes this book so intriguing. Included is a comprehensive biography of Williams and his work, focusing on 30 of his most famous projects as featured in the early pages of The Architectural Digest. There are many vintage images of his works throughout the book, which document both the interiors and exteriors of the properties. One thing that is striking is that celebrities in those years lived in beautiful, humanscaled properties, not the mega-mansions of today’s a-listers. Enjoy the not-so-distant past while reading this incisive book.

Paul Brant Williger Architect ORDER, RESOLUTION & BEAUTY

F

or more than three decades, Paul Brant Williger has dedicated his talents to fulfilling the residential requirements and dreams of a host of discriminating high-end clients. The reputation he has built is that of a gifted architect with a proven ability to engage with patrons in such a way as to permit them to articulate and realize their own visions. Williger began his career in the office of Robert A.M. Stern and, like Stern, displays a keen understanding of the requisites for luxury living, his bespoke skills having been honed in the affluent enclaves of Southern California, from Laguna Beach and Montecito to Malibu and Beverly Hills. Although known for his fluency in a number of architectural traditions, Williger is not one to place style over substance. “The signature or brand is not crucial for me. What is important is that I have realized my clients’ desires and gone beyond their expectations. That’s when I know I have done my job.” This mantra has served him well and has been one of the keys to his building the exclusive and discerning client base that has followed him to his namesake architectural firm, Paul Brant Williger. “My approach,” he explains, “is to begin with the clients’ dreams, together with the site and the project parameters, and to articulate these into a built form. My task is to find the opportunities in each situation which, when addressed intelligently, add depth and richness to a project.” My clients come to me because they know that along the way we will navigate that process without losing sight of the aesthetics. The goal is order, resolution and beauty–not just getting a building permit.” Paul Brant Williger Architect, 110 N Doheny Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90211, 310.490.2742, willigerarchitect.com

McClean Design

DEFINING CALIFORNIA LIFESTYLE

P

aul McClean is one of today’s leading contemporary architects whose elegant residential work is synonymous with the quintessential California lifestyle. McClean’s projects, from modest homes to spacious estates, have made him the go-to-architect for sophisticated contemporary spaces. Light, air, expansive views and water are the hallmarks of his work. He continually seeks original ways to create homes that allow their owners a place to retreat from the busy world around them and connect with the natural environment. Eliminating the barrier between indoors and outdoors is thus an essential component of his custom-built residences. McClean is a member of the American Institute of Architects and his eponymous firm works throughout California and the United States, as well as around the world. Established in 2000, McClean Design strives for excellence in architecture and pushing the boundaries of imagination with extraordinary spaces, while committing to environmentally sustainable design practices. Paul released his first book, McClean Design: Creating the Contemporary House, in the spring of 2019. Written by Philip Jodidio and published by Rizzoli Electa, the book takes us behind the scenes of twenty-one of the architect’s ultra-modern homes completed in the past fifteen years. NMA Architects NO ONE KNOWS QUITE HOW TO CREATE A SENSE OF PLACE LIKE NMA

N

MA Architects work with clients who appreciate what the Santa Barbara life is all about. People who not only want a home designed around their own unique lifestyle, but one that’s also sensitive to the local environment and connected to the beauty around it. This way of working comes directly from the deep-rooted beliefs of partners Dave Mendro and Mary Andrulaitis. They have been in California over 25 years, earning their credentials as old-school locals, and constantly evolving their understanding of the central coast, creating close relationships with local craftsmen, designers and agencies so their clients get the very best results. It’s also important to NMA that they spend as much time as possible with each client, from first sketches to the last day of the build, being there every step of the way. It’s all of these things together that make the difference between a good project and a great one. NMA knows their work needs to be more than just beautiful, it also needs to complement and respect this place we’ve all grown to love. n Latin, signum means “design.” To its founders, Signum represents an identity that transcends any particular architectural style, and symbolizes the firm’s accumulated knowledge and experience, the work of a symbiotic team carefully built over the firm’s 10 years in practice. Each project is distinct and individual, and each design represents a solution to a particular set of opportunities and challenges. “When we founded our firm, we had the opportunity to define a new design practice built on trust, teamwork, inspired problem-solving and the long-term view. We are mindful in our practices, and connect deeply to the stories of each of our clients,” says Jarrod. Adds Juancarlos, “It’s a complementary partnership, built on our dedication to long-lasting relationships, a design approach based on curiosity and collaboration, and a willingness to always push the envelope.” The result is a practice that, within a decade, has built a deep portfolio of residential, winery and hospitality projects, across the wine country and beyond, that includes some of the region’s most highly regarded wineries. Among them are Hall Winery and CADE Estate, the first and second LEED Gold Certified wineries in California. FOR AN AWARD-WINNING ARCHITECTURE FIRM IN MILL VALLEY, EACH SPACE IS A LABOR OF LOVE— TAILOR-DESIGNED BASED ON INDIVIDUAL CLIENT NEEDS

A

rchitects Elizabeth Suzuki AIA and Ron Sutton AIA, founders of Sutton Suzuki Architects, opened their Mill Valley firm 30 years ago. “Ron grew up in the construction business and gravitated toward the design side,” says Elizabeth, who graduated from University of Cincinnati. “I grew up laying out floor plans and rearranging furniture.” The awardwinning team, who has completed numerous projects including a modern 7,000 sf home on the bluffs of Malibu, a 5,000-acre ranch in Mendocino County, and residences in Jackson, Wyoming, Kauai, and Incline Village, Nevada, acknowledges it’s a joint effort working closely with clients on every project. “We both like working together with clients to create spaces that will be comfortable and work well for them, while being gracious and offering wonderful surprises that they wouldn’t have been able to anticipate,” says Elizabeth. “We both started in the commercial design field and very early on realized that we liked working more intimately with clients. Projects for people’s homes clearly have immediate impact on the way they live, in a different manner than an office or commercial space. It’s all about how the clients will use the spaces.”

A DESIGN PRACTICE WITH A DEEP COMMITMENT TO ARCHITECTURE AS A MATERIAL CRAFT AND A DISCIPLINE GROUNDED IN IDEAS

A

s beautiful as some homes are, they can often feel like one of the galleries in a contemporary art museum–cold, impersonal, intimidating. But not if Maura Fernández Abernethy and Christopher Roach, principals of Studio VARA, have anything to do with it. The San Francisco-based architecture firm has built its considerable reputation on creating residences that are sophisticated and striking while still being welcoming and familiar. “Most people who come to us want to work with us to create a home that is customized to them and their family, both in terms of their day to day life, but also to their dreams and aspirations for who they want to be,” said Abernethy, adding that working with a client is, for the company, “a deeply personal experience that we are invited to participate in.” No matter the home, however, the Studio VARA signature remains an enduring one. “It’s thoughtful design that shows a very high level of craft that is consistent throughout a project,” said Roach. “We consider every aspect of a design. The result is work that is both contemporary and timeless, simple, quiet, even minimalist, yet layered with rich texture and detail.”

QuarryHouse Translates An Ancient Craft Into A Modern Vernacular

The Stonemason EDWARD WESTBROOK of QuarryHouse and his team of

master stonemasons translate their ancient craft into a modern vernacular. With headquarters in Marin County and stone shops in Richmond, California, and Verona, Italy, the company sources, manages, fabricates, installs, and restores stone for both private residences and public spaces. Since 1993, they have partnered with the top interior designers, architects, and builders in California to create timeless structures. For a Japanese styled sanctuary in Hawaii, QuarryHouse collaborated with San Francisco interior designers TWG and Kamuela, based de Reus Architects. They juxtaposed the site's rough indigenousness lava stone with smooth buff-colored sandstone for the residence's walls. Westbrook sourced the rock from a quarry he developed in China, which his stonemasons fabricated into curved segments and finished to resemble the texture of woven cloth. The artistry melded seamlessly with the home's natural woods. Westbrook worked with the late Lawrence Halprin on many projects, including the Letterman Digital Arts Center in San Francisco's Presidio. Halprin served as the Master Planner and Landscape Architect for the park. QuarryHouse installed stone pillars at the two entrances to greet visitors. They constructed a 500-foot meandering stream that transverses the 17-acre property from the remnants of a Northern Californian stream bed. Two stone belvederes with seating provide views of the Bay and Marina. In Verona, Westbrook's business partner is CITCO. The company combines old-world craftsmanship with contemporary design. QuarryHouse teams with the Italian firm for bespoke stone staircases, walls, floors, and furnishings for clients on the West Coast and beyond. The Artist

DECORATIVE ARTIST James Stancil creates magic; ranging from a nocturnal Twombly-esque painted floor to ivory gesso on intricately carved Anglo-Indian fretwork. The owner of Stancil Studios oversees a talented crew of international artisans in his South of Market studio. There the thirty-six-year-old family firm collaborates with elite interior designers, architects, and builders on custom projects. One of Stancil’s clients, The Wiseman Group, commissioned him for nuanced surfaces throughout a Tudor Revival estate on the Peninsula. In the Raj styled library, he complimented the Elizabethan carved stone fireplace’s color with the crackled off-white finish on the bar fretwork panels and cabinetry. When Catherine Kwong, alumni of The Wiseman Group designed the living room of the 2013 San Francisco Decorator Showcase, she enlisted Stancil. Stancil’s expertise and talent take him beyond the San Francisco Bay Area. Los Angeles, Manhattan, Hawaii, Boston, Chicago, London, and Paris are home to his studio's finishes. nspired by those who broke away from the pack, Tineke Triggs is known for designing soulful interiors with an imaginative edge. “It has to have soul–something that draws you in and makes you want to look closer,” she says. By mastering both the art and science of design, her work gives rise to a unique form of design mixology with elevated interiors that not only provoke the senses, but deliver on the details. Triggs, who founded San Francisco-based design firm Artistic Designs for Living nearly 20 years ago has a passion for discovering those unique design elements that make her clients’ hearts sing. “The magic often happens just outside one’s comfort zone with those extra little details that allow each home to tell its own unique story,” she says. “It might be vintage pieces with contemporary art or adding a statement lighting to create the ‘jewelry’ in a room. Finding those special elements is what creates the most memorable designs. At the end of the day, I don’t just want my clients to be happy with our work, I want them to feel over the moon about the spaces we create together,” says Triggs. Navarra Design TRADITIONAL WITH A TWIST

I

nterior designer, Kathleen Navarra, principal of San Francisco based Navarra Design Inc., knew she wanted to be a designer when she was just 16. “I visited a construction site with my neighbor who was an interior designer and said, “ this is what I am going to do!” says Navarra who grew up in New York and Florida before settling in California. Navarra, who started her own firm in 1994, has designed everything from a historic Victorian in Atherton, a barn in Sonoma, to a beach house in Carmel, as well as a slew of decorating and remodel projects throughout California. Drawing inspiration from fashion and her travels, she crafts beautifully layered spaces that unfold gradually to highlight thoughtful details. “It is incredibly satisfying knowing that people love existing in the spaces we create,” says Navarra. fter a decade working in the fashion industry as an acces- sories designer including a stint for the likes of DKNY, Elena Calabrese decided to change careers entirely and pursue interior design. In 2009, the Sausalito–based designer launched her firm, Elena Calabrese Design & Décor, after remodeling her own home and enrolling in University of California at Berkeley’s Interior Design program. Since then, she has worked on projects from Napa to San Francisco, including national remote design projects. “I would have to say my heart lies in the space that is laidback, luxurious, chic and earthy with a splash of vintage preferably from the 1970’s,” says Calabrese of her aesthetic. “Kind of Earthy meets Studio 54.” Elena Calabrese Design & Décor, 480 Gate Five Rd, Sausalito CA, 94965, 415.250.5074, elenacalabrese.com, info@elenacalabrese.com

Eugenia Jesberg Interior Design

DESIGNING FOR THE INDOOR-OUTDOOR LIFETSTYLE WITH ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND CRAFTSMANSHIP

E

ugenia believes that the design process should be engaging, inspiring and fun. Eugenia and her team take cues from their clients and respond with inventive solutions drawing on Eugenia’s vast experience working on both high-end residential and elite commercial projects. Among the many important considerations in developing the creative thread that drives each project forward are her clients’ lifestyles, location and natural light, interior architecture and consideration of how spaces will be used. The EJ Interior Design team specializes in projects across the Bay Area, Colorado, Idaho and beyond. In a recent Stinson Beach project (images seen here), everything was designed to bring in the views, EJ Interior Design used a neutral palette focused on texture to tell the story of its seaside surroundings. The barriers between inside and outside seem to melt away in this dreamy beach house. This is a common thread in the firm’s projects. Founded in 1993, EJ Interior Design has been a leader, providing the highest level of service. Over the years, Eugenia has developed a strong team, including her daughter Emma Jesberg, who joined the firm in 2020 and secured relationships with tradespeople and vendors committed to quality. Jennifer specializes in large-scale residential projects throughout the Wine Country, Lake Tahoe and the San Francisco Bay Area. In everything from the materials she chooses to the way she carefully designs each space around its native environment, she blends rustic beauty with upscale luxury like no other. “I want people to walk into a home and notice the natural surroundings first, then slowly discover the surprises and thoughtfulness of the interiors,” she says. “Maintaining a strong connection to the outdoors is important. At times, that means keeping the interiors quiet to let nature take center stage.” Her latest projects include a rustic retreat in Tahoe, a wine country home in Calistoga, and a modern residential remodel in San Francisco. When asked about her dream project she tells us, “I’m working on them!” Jennifer Robin Interiors, 15 Library Place, San Anselmo, CA 94960, 415.578.2396, jrobininteriors.com

Zeterre Landscape Architecture UNIQUE LANDSCAPE DESIGN FOR TODAY’S MODERN FAMILY

J

arrod Baumann, founder of Bay Area–based landscape architecture firm, Zeterre, confesses his first studio was his childhood garden on an 800acre historic ranch in California Gold Country. “I saved all of my money from working on the ranch to buy plants,” says Baumann who studied at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and once thought he wanted to be an architect. “By the time I left for college, I had a collection of over 200 difference species, most of them rare.” Baumann, who launched his firm in 2006 and attributes some of his inspiration to the Italian gardens on Lake Maggiore and the Garden of Cosmic Speculation in Scotland, has worked on garden design projects spanning India, Dubai, France, and Greece, and a romantic garden in Hollywood Hills replete with astrological-themed nodes. “I simply love good design and I am in a constant search for beauty in unlikely places,” adds Baumann whose work spans European and Japanese gardens. “I love that our projects are sitespecific and architecture appropriate,” he says. “I get to design so many different styles.”
