odos los aniversarios son especiales, pero celebrar una década tiene un sabor diferente. Los 10 años se sienten como un hito, más que, simplemente, como otro año cumplido. Para el equipo editorial de CASA GALERÍA es además un gran orgullo y una gran satisfacción constatar la evolución que ha tenido la publicación, hoy convertida en toda una plataforma de contenidos sobre desarrollo inmobiliario, arte, diseño y estilo de vida.

Nos honra ser protagonistas en primera fila del desarrollo de Centroamérica. En esta década hemos crecido –al igual que lo ha hecho la región—de la mano con la apertura a la globalización. Nuestra audiencia está compuesta por ciudadanos del mundo que encontraron en nuestros países un balance perfecto para residir y quienes agradecen contar con una guía sobre lo mejor de lo mejor que está disponible localmente. Algunos de ellos, incluso, nacieron fuera de nuestras fronteras. Hoy celebramos que CASA GALERÍA no solo participa de la conversación, la propone. Durante esta primera década, CASA GALERÍA ha sido pionera en documentar el desarrollo urbano de nuestras ciudades y el arribo de nuevos y exclusivos enclaves a nuestras costas. Conscientes del entorno global en el que vivimos, se ha buscado la identidad local en cada propuesta arquitectónica, en cada diseño y en cada talento que se presenta. Casi sin pensarlo, lo que inició como un proyecto editorial tradicional es hoy en día mucho más que solo eso. CASA GALERÍA ha transformado su contenido en experiencias a las que se convoca los más influyentes de la industria. Es así como en el próximo noviembre celebraremos la décima edición de un evento anual que se ha convertido en una cita obligatoria para personas con gusto por el diseño, la calidad y el buen vivir.

For the editorial team of CASA GALERIA it is with great pride and great satisfaction that we see the evolution the publication has made, now converted into a comprehensive platform of content for real-estate development, art, design and life style. We are honored to be players of the front row of the development of Central America. During this decade we have grown – as has the region – hand in hand with the initiation of globalization. Our audiences are citizens of the world who found in our countries a perfect balance to reside and who appreciate having a guide of the best of the best available locally. Some of them were even born outside of our borders.

Today we celebrate that CASA GALERIA not only participates of the conversation, it proposes it. During this first decade, CASA GALERIA has been a pioneer in documenting the urban development of our cities and the arrival of new and exclusive enclaves at our shores. Aware of the global environment in which we live, it has sought the local identity in each local architectural proposal, in each design and in each talent that is presented. Almost without thinking, what started out as a traditional editorial project today has become much more than just that. CASA GALERIA has transformed its content into experiences that summon the most influential in the industry. Thus, during the coming month of November we will celebrate the tenth edition of an annual event that has become a mandatory meeting for people with taste for design, quality and good living. But, since the party is your concern, I will recommend only the gastronomic. The truth: it is sad eating the dishes at Santos. They are small works of art that one would prefer to frame and take home.

Pruebe los ceviches y los tiraditos para un fresco comienzo. Yo comí el de pulpo, que tenía pesto de rúcula, lo que nos habla ya del afán del chef por fusionar tradición y creatividad, otro tiene alioli de kalamata y otro más se prepara con salsa ponzu con naranja. Si quiere seguir en la línea liviana, el sushi es, en realidad, un híbrido inspirado en su pariente japonés, pero totalmente exótico: lleva nachos y chayote, quinoa y vinagre de panela. Uno quisiera ir todos los días hasta haber probado todas estas locuras.

Try the ceviche and the tiraditos for a fresh start. I ate the octopus, which had pesto of arugula, which speaks to us about the eagerness of the chef of merging tradition and creativity, another one has aioli from Kalamata and another is prepared with ponzu sauce with orange. If you want to follow in the light route, sushi is in reality, a hybrid inspired by its Japanese relative, but totally exotic: it has nachos and chayote squash, quinoa and panela (sugar cane ) vinegar. One would like to visit every day until one has tried all these creations.

Si en cambio quiere algo caliente, se puede sorprender al hallar un chifrijo de alcurnia, que compite felizmente contra las costillas con caramelo de ajo y jengibre, o con el rice bowl de pollo y mole. Se podría decir mucho más, pero las palabras jamás reemplazarán la experiencia real que, desde la puerta principal, seduce los sentidos.

On the other hand, if you want something hot, you may be surprised to find a chifrijo of outstanding lineage, which competes with the ribs with caramel made from garlic and ginger, or with the rice bowl of chicken and mole. A lot more could be said, but words will never replace the real experience that, from the main door, seduces the senses.

“La semana de la feria Frieze se parece a la Navidad”, le dice un taxista a A. Gill, editor de la revista Vanity Fair. El ambiente será el mismo: las calles de Londres se abarrotarán de gente y, durante cuatro días, la ciudad inglesa será capital del mundo para el arte contemporáneo.

Durante el encuentro, el espacio inaugurará dos nuevas secciones: ‘Live’ y ‘Focus’. ‘Live’ será el escenario para las instalacionesperformances que se mantendrán activas durante los días de feria. ‘Focus’ concentrará, por su parte, las galerías emergentes cuyo trabajo merece ser considerado.

During the exposition, the space will inaugurate two new sections: ‘Live’ and ‘Focus’. ‘Live’ will be the scenario of the performance concept and will remain active during the days of the fair. ‘Focus’, on the other hand, will concentrate on emerging galleries whose work deserves to be considered.

México, Colombia y Brasil tendrán representación en la Frieze London Art Fair. Las galerías Casas Riegner, de Bogotá, y Mendes Wood DM, de São Paulo, serán invitadas por segunda ocasión, mientras que esta será la primera oportunidad para otras como Kurimanzutto, de México, y Luisa Strina, Vermelho y Jaqueline Martins de São Paulo, Brasil.

Mexico, Colombia and Brazil will be represented in the London Frieze Art Fair. Riegner Houses galleries, from Bogotá, and Mendes Wood DM, of Sao Paulo, will be invited for a second time, while this will be the first opportunity for other such as Kurimanzutto, of Mexico, and Luisa Strina, Vermelho and Jaqueline Martins of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

En la gran celebración europea, el concepto clásico de arte se amplía para abrirles paso a las construcciones conceptuales en donde lo abstracto acapara la atención. Durante el festival, se ven obras de arte construidas a partir de patos de hule amarillos, esculturas gigantes con la forma de una nariz, piedras enormes colgando del techo: composiciones que podrían parecer una casualidad pero que se convierten en arte por el significado —sea cual sea— que tienen para los artistas contemporáneos.

In the great European celebration, the classic concept of art extends to open the path to the conceptual structures where the abstract monopolizes the attention. During the festival, works of art constructed from yellow rubber ducks, giant sculptures in the shape of a nose, huge rocks hanging from the ceiling: compositions that might seem coincidental but that are converted into art by its meaning -whatever- they may be for contemporary artists.

La organización anunció recientemente que, del 15 al 18 de octubre próximo, 160 galerías tomarán el Regent’s Park para revelar el trabajo de nuevos artistas y los proyectos de leyendas contemporáneas ya consolidadas.

The environment will be the same: the streets of London bursting with people and, for four days, the British capital becomes the capitol of contemporary art. very year, the London Frieze Art Fair brings together prestigious galleries spread across four continents; 2014 is no exception. Los parques naturales, las zonas industriales y los centros comerciales que forman parte de la cotidianidad de San José pueden ahora apreciarse —cual si fueran un collage de mundos y de vidas—en la magnífica ciudad italiana de las góndolas y las máscaras. La cita será durante la Bienal de Venecia 2014.

ajo la curaduría del arquitecto alemán Oliver Schütte y la antropóloga holandesa Marije van Lidth de Jeude, un equipo multidisciplinario llevó un extracto de la capital costarricense a la edición número 14 de la Bienal de Arquitectura de Venecia. Este año, Costa Rica debuta entre otros 65 países. La muestra se denomina Ticollage y consta de una exposición multimedia en la que se aprecia el impacto de la modernidad en el desarrollo arquitectónico y urbanístico del Gran Área Metropolitana, con un enfoque en San José, a lo largo de los últimos 100 años. En Ticollage, se valora el contraste entre la ciudad vieja y nueva, tras el complejo proceso de modernización por el que ha pasado. El visitante puede apreciar una línea de tiempo que pone de relieve 70 edificios y espacios emblemáticos y se completa con una serie de instalaciones sonoras de la ciudad y la naturaleza circundante, y fotografías. Todas estas obras fueron realizadas con la colaboración de reconocidos artistas y fotógrafos nacionales y extranjeros. La Bienal, que se promociona bajo el tema “Absorbiendo la modernidad”, es curada por el arquitecto holandés Rem Koolhaas y se conjuga por primera vez con las bienales de danza, teatro, música y cine, para promover la interacción entre las diferentes disciplinas.

The national parks, the industrial zones and the shopping centers that are part of the everyday life of San José, as if they were a collage of worlds of life, can now be observed in the magnificent Italian city of the gondola and the masks.

nder the curatorship of the German architect Oliver Schütte and the Dutch anthropologist Marije van Lidth de Jeude, who have more than a decade living in our country, a multidisciplinary team took a part of our capital city into the 14th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, where Costa Rica debuted this year. Sixty-five countries participate in this event. This exhibition called Ticollage consists in a multimedia exposition about the impact of the modernity over the architectural and urban development of the Costa Rican Great Metropolitan Area, with focus on San José in the past 100 years. Ticollage values the contrast between the old city and the new one, after this complex modernization process that this metropolis has experienced. The visitor will also appreciate a timeline that highlights 70 buildings and emblematic spaces, completed with a series of sound installations of the city and the surrounding nature, as well as photographs, all of them made with the collaboration of renowned national and foreign artists and photographers. The Biennale, entitled “Fundamentals”, is curated by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas and for the first time involves also the dance, theater, music and film exhibitions, in order to promote the interactions between these different disciplines.

Panamá es una capital arquitectónica. La línea del horizonte de esta ciudad se ha visto transformada radicalmente con la llegada de proyectos que ponen a la disposición de sus habitantes locales o ejecutivos e inversionistas foráneos, las más modernas estructuras y servicios, en ambientes de lujo, para disfrutar de este paraíso tropical.

anamá se encuentra, literalmente, en una posición privilegiada para el negocio de los bienes raíces y la industria inmobiliaria. A pesar de que es imposible predecir la naturaleza y sus efectos, los desastres naturales en Panamá son histórica y estadísticamente mucho menores en cantidad y magnitud que en otros países de la región. Esta estabilidad ha permitido que la línea del horizonte de Panamá haya crecido en magnitud, atractivo y altura de sus edificios, de manera comparable a las grandes capitales del mundo. En los nuevos proyectos, existe una clara orientación al servicio al cliente; una gran disposición por satisfacer sus necesidades de manera personalizada y con los más altos estándares de calidad. Es notable, en este sentido, la tendencia de las residencias que aprovechan la plataforma de servicios existentes en los hoteles a los cuales están relacionados, como la de las torres residenciales independientes que desarrollan servicios similares a los ofrecidos en hotelería, para tener a disposición de sus residentes una oferta similar y competitiva en el mercado actual. En adición, Panamá es un hub sumamente favorable para el viajero frecuente, ya sea por negocios o por su estilo de vida. Desde el país, salen a diario vuelos directos a capitales como Miami, Nueva York, Ámsterdam y Madrid, además de ofrecer una gran conectividad a otros destinos desde su aeropuerto internacional. Cada vez con mayor frecuencia, los extranjeros sucumben a los encantos de esta nación y se unen a una vibrante comunidad internacional que viene formándose desde hace algunas décadas, como producto del robusto centro bancario. A esto, se suma la instalación de oficinas regionales de empresas multinacionales, organismos internacionales y organizaciones no gubernamentales. Todo esto atrae un gran número de ejecutivos que debe residir o pasar largos períodos en la ciudad; ellos invierten directamente o se ubican en propiedades compradas o alquiladas por las organizaciones para las cuales laboran. Evidencia de lo anterior, se presenta en los registros del Servicio Nacional de Migración de Panamá: tan solo a junio de 2014 se había aprobado más de 7.000 permisos de residencia permanente y más de 3.000 visas de inmigrantes, permisos provisionales o permisos temporales de trabajo. Afortunadamente, tanto para nacionales como para residentes internacionales, existe en la actualidad una atractiva oferta de condominios de lujo que cumplen con los requerimientos para distintos estilos de vida, gustos y exigencias. Even though it is impossible to predict the nature and effects of natural disasters, in Panama it is historic and statistically less in number and magnitude that in other countries in the region. This stability has allowed the skyline of Panama to grow in size, in attractiveness and height of its buildings, in similar ways to great capitals of the world. In new projects, there is a clear trend towards customer service; a great willingness to meet customer needs in a personalized way and with the highest standards of quality. In this sense, it is remarkable to see the trend of residences that benefit from the policy of existing services in the hotels with which they are related, like the independent residential towers that develop services similar to those offered in the hospitality business, in order to have a similar competitive proposal for its residents in today’s market. In addition, Panama is an extremely favorable hub for the frequent traveler, whether for business or for pleasure. Direct flights, leave daily from this country to Miami, New York, Amsterdam, Madrid, in addition to offering great connectivity to other destinations from its international airport. With increasing frequency, foreigners succumb to the charm of this nation and join a vibrant international community that has been forming during the past several decades as a product of a robust banking center. En septiembre, la lluvia es el único soundtrack posible de una ciudad como San José. La respuesta natural a este trópico, infinitamente húmedo, es el privilegio de que los costarricenses conocen todas las gamas posibles de verde. El poeta beat Gary Snyder había escrito alguna vez que “la naturaleza no necesita el arte” y este país casi lo suscribe. Es en septiembre cuando sucede, también, Valoarte.

In September, rain is the only soundtrack possible in a city like San Jose. The natural response to this tropical weather, infinitely wet, is the privilege that all Costa Ricans have of knowing all the possible ranges of green. Pero, más allá del fondo de su gestión, Valoarte fue adquiriendo con el transcurso de los años una legitimidad que sólo puede surgir de la necesidad imperante —en el medio artístico— de proyectos privados que alternen la escasa opción estatal.

But, beyond the bottommost of its management, Valoarte obtained, over the years, a validity that can only come from the prevailing need - in the artistic medium- of private projects that alternate with the limited option provided by the state.

Una plataforma que no sólo convoca artistas visuales de más de 30 países, sino a reconocidas figuras de la plástica internacional que, de otra manera, son difíciles de acceder en los programas expositivos nacionales. Este año, con figuras como el maestro del op art, el venezolano Carlos Cruz Diez, o el paisajista cubano Tomás Sánchez, por sólo citar un par de ejemplos.

A platform that not only brings together visual artists from over 30 countries, but recognized artists of international importance that otherwise are difficult to access in the national exhibition scene. This year, with figures such as the master of the op art, the Venezuelan Carlos Cruz Ten, or the Cuban landscapist Tomás Sánchez, to cite just a few as examples.

Otra de las líneas de trabajo del proyecto es el concurso que se lanza en cada edición. En esta contó como jurado con los prestigiosos artistas Carlos Capelán (Uruguay-Suecia), Rolando Faba (Costa Rica) —quien vuelve al país tras décadas de residencia en España—, junto a quien suscribe este texto. Las sugerencias y los aportes tras las jornadas de trabajo estuvieron enfocados en orientar este proceso a artistas jóvenes, intentando crear un incentivo en las academias locales y de la región; además, se planteó una toma de posición riesgosa, pero no por ello menos esperanzadora, para sus organizadores. Nuevos nombres siempre aparecen en el escenario de este concurso, que es cantera —valgan siempre los lugares comunes— para las galerías, los críticos y los curadores, debido a la visibilización de tanta creación parcialmente desconocida.

Another line of work of this project is the competition that is organized at every edition. En un edificio en obra gris de Avenida Escazú, se sucederá esta edición. La colaboración de los diferentes actores de la zona donde se encuentra ArtFlow (su oficina de operaciones en esta área) es parte del contagio que la obra social y la gestión de Clachar han logrado a lo largo de una década. Podemos esperar una muestra monumental y variopinta en términos formales. Tal y como acostumbra: pintura, escultura, arte conceptual, instalaciones, fotografía, video, además de eventos teóricos, visitas guiadas y programas colaterales empresariales. Valoarte en una década ha contribuido en una nación de menos de 5 millones de habitantes a la concreción de una escena de coleccionismo local, necesaria para un país que produce proporcionalmente tantos artistas.

This edition will take place at a modern building with concrete surfaces at Avenida Escazú. The collaboration among the various players in the area where ArtFlow is found (its office of operations is in this area) is part of the contagious social work that the management of Clachar has achieved over the course of a decade. We can expect a monumental sample and variegated in formal terms. Tres apellidos resuenan en el diseño de espacios internos en la región: Joaristi, Hammond y Washington. Cada uno tiene su propia historia que contar. Esta puede relacionarse con el arte o la ciencia, inpirarse en los mercados de pulgas o en películas como Blade Runner. Sin embargo, todos ellos comparten algo: el apego a lo local pero con la calidad que trasciende fronteras.

Three names resound in the design of internal spaces in the region: Joaristi, Hammond and Washington. Each one has its own story to tell. They can be related to art or science, inspired at flea markets or in movies such as Blade Runner. However, they all share one thing: the connection to that which is local but with the quality that transcends borders.

Aimeé Joaristi viaja por trabajo y porque su trabajo es su placer. Su sello ecléctico ha cruzado cien veces las fronteras de la creatividad y la ha llevado a ser considerada una marcadora de tendencias en España, donde este año fue elegida por la revista Nuevo Estilo para aparecer como portada del número del mes de noviembre. Fuera de su trabajo de interiorista, para el 2015, sacará una línea de textiles para decoración en Madrid y otra de pañolones en Milán por una firma de moda. Ambas basadas en su trabajo pictórico. Aimee Joaristi travels for work and her work is her pleasure. Its eclectic brand has crossed a hundred times the boundaries of creativity and has led to be considered an indicator of trends in Spain, where this year she was chosen by Nuevo Estilo magazine to appear on the cover of the November edition. Apart from her work as interior designer, for 2015, she will present a line of textiles for decoration in Madrid and another of “pañolones” (wraps) in Milan for a fashion company. What is design?

¿Qué tanto se alimenta el diseño del arte? Imagino que, en su trabajo, es más que evidente esta relación.

How much is design nurtured by art? I imagine that, in your work, this relationship is more than obvious.

La arquitectura es como música en movimiento; es forma, luz, espacio… Esto existe en todas las disciplinas artísticas. Lo veo como un todo; no puedo verlo separadamente. Si uno ve mis interiores y ve mi obra pictórica o escultórica, distingue un hilo conductor que sigue patrones ordenados en aparente caos.

Architecture is like music in movement; it is form, light, space… This exists in all artistic disciplines. I see it as a whole; I cannot see it separately. If one sees my interior designs and sees my paintings or sculptures, one will distinguish a common thread that follows patterns arranged in apparent chaos.

¿Cómo le gusta trabajar cuando diseña?

How do you like to work when you design?

Con mucha libertad. Mi proceso creativo es muy intuitivo y funciona a gran velocidad. Me gusta trabajar a mi ritmo y, si se me pide prolongar el proceso, se enturbia el resultado. La libertad da una frescura que es incontenible.

With great freedom. My creative process is very intuitive and works at high speed. I like to work at my own pace and, if I am asked to extend the process, the end result is hazy. Freedom gives a freshness that is uncontainable.

No podría decir cuáles. Han sido mi historia personal, donde he vivido: Madrid, Milán, Nueva York, Costa Rica… Es una sedimentación que se va formando en capas.

It could’nt say which. They are my personal history, where I have lived: Madrid, Milan, New York, Costa Rica… It’s sedimentation that has formed in layers.

¿Hacia dónde va el diseño de interiores? Va hacia la libertad siempre que se sepa manejar. Todo se puede utilizar y todo se puede hacer. Es la apertura total siempre que se logre en ese eclecticismo una armonía. Si empezara a racionalizar por qué voy a poner una alcancía china con un mueble francés del siglo XVIII, rompería con la espontaneidad; de alguna manera, hay un contraste, que genera una reacción, llama la atención y así se captura la esencia del drama. ¿Qué marca su estilo? Esta libertad y la naturalidad al hacer mis mezclas. Tiendas favoritas de diseño Acudo a tantas y no sigo tendencias. Es raro que vea revistas de decoración. Mi trabajo es más atemporal. No soy seguidora de tendencias, aunque siempre me insisten en este tema. Los lugares que más visito son rastros en todo el mundo: el Mercado de las Pulgas de París, el Rastro en Madrid, Santelmo en Buenos Aires. Siempre ando buscando ese lugar donde no me voy a encontrar lo obvio. La sorpresa es el mejor elemento en la decoración. Algo que quisiera diseñar… Casi seguro que voy a diseñar un palacio abandonado en Madrid. Tengo que hacerle toda la restauración y el interiorismo. Es un gran reto y me parece muy interesante al ser muy complejo.

Where is interior designing heading? It is heading towards freedom as long as it is handled properly. Everything can be used and everything can be done. It’s total exposure as long as in that eclecticism you achieve harmony. If I start to rationalize why I’m going to place a Chinese ornament with a French eighteenth century sample of furniture, I would break with spontaneity; somehow, there is a contrast that generates a reaction and generates attention and thus captures the essence of drama. What brands your style? The freedom and openness of producing my combinations. Favorite design shops I visit so many and don’t follow trends. It is rare that I read decoration magazines. My work is more ageless. I am not a true follower of trends, although I am always questioned on this topic. The places that I visit the most are flea markets around the world: the flea market in Paris, the Flea Market in Madrid, and San Telmo in Buenos Aires. I am always looking for that place where I am not going to find the obvious. Surprise is the best element in decorating. Something you would like to design… Almost for sure I am going to design an abandoned palace in Madrid. I need to do all the restoration and interior design. Claudia & Harry Washington es un estudio de diseño de interiores y mobiliario formado y dirigido por los salvadoreños Claudia Vásquez Washington y Harry Washington. Su estilo de diseño está marcado por la necesidad de crear espacios y productos con una visión de diseño global; para lograrlo, utilizan recursos locales. Sus propuestas se sienten internacionales, pero con serios rasgos tradicionales y latinoamericanos. “Estos rasgos tradicionales permiten que sigan contando la historia de dónde venimos”, explica Harry. Las texturas, el uso de la madera y los tejidos son algunos de los recursos que les permiten trasmitir este lenguaje.

¿Qué es lo que influencia más su trabajo como diseñadores internos? Antes que nada, hacemos que nuestra filosofía esté presente en cada diseño elaborado. Para nosotros, es importante lograr dar forma a nuestra existencia, pero manteniéndonos apegados a nuestra naturaleza. Deseamos ser auténticos a eso que nos hace ser humanos. Algo tan sencillo, como una memoria que evoca una sensación nostálgica, nos puede inspirar. Emociones naturales y sensaciones reales nos guían para crear espacios y productos que coexisten en armonía con nuestra esencia. ¿Cuál es el criterio más importante que utiliza su oficina para abordar un nuevo proyecto? Lograr una conexión con una sensación o emoción específica. Esta sensación o emoción puede estar directamente relacionada a una marca ―si lo que estamos diseñando es un espacio retail o un producto― o algo muy personal si el espacio es residencial. En pocas palabras, es para nosotros verdaderamente elemental empaparnos del ADN de la marca, del usuario del producto o del estilo de vida de la persona. ¿Cuáles tendencias se están viendo cada vez más en el trabajo de diseño interno en la región? Cada vez notamos más la intención de recurrir a elementos clásicos o vintage para generar la sensación de que los espacios tienen historia o tradición, e incluso dar la impresión de que han existido por más tiempo. La combinación de espacios modernos e industriales, con toques vintage, pudiera ser una tendencia en estos momentos.

Claudia & Harry Washington is an interior design and furniture firm formed and directed by Salvadorans Claudia Vasquez Washington and Harry Washington. Their design style is marked by the need to create spaces and products with a global vision of design; to achieve this, they use local resources. Their proposals are international, but with serious and traditional Latin American traits. “These traditional characteristics allow us to continue to tell the story of where we come from,” explains Harry. The textures, the use of wood and the fabrics are some of the resources that enable them to transmit this language. What is it that influences your work the most as internal designers? Before anything, we insure that our philosophy is present in each design we develop. For us, it is important to give form to our existence, but to remain committed to our nature. We want to be authentic to that which makes us be human beings. Something as simple as a memory that evokes a nostalgic feeling can inspire us. What is the most important criteria that your office uses to initiate a new project? Achieving a connection with a specific feeling or emotion. This feeling or emotion can be directly related to a brand – if what we are designing is a retail space or a product - or something very personal if the space is residential. In a nutshell, for us it is truly elementary to immerse ourselves in the DNA of the brand, the user of the product or the person’s life-style.

What trends are increasingly seen in the internal design work in the region? Los diseñadores de espacios internos ya están incursionando en diseño, por ejemplo, de muebles, de textiles e incluso de piezas que forman parte de la arquitectura. ¿Cuál cree que es la razón por la que esté pasando eso y por qué, en lo particular, les gusta la parte de diseño de muebles? Creemos que tiene que ver con la necesidad que tienen los arquitectos y diseñadores de analizar cada diseño con una enfoque más completo. El diseñador tiene el conocimiento de los principios de diseño y sus metodologías, y estos pueden aplicarse a cualquier rama de las artes aplicadas. En nuestro caso, funciona así. Rara vez diseñamos un interior en el que no hagamos una pieza de mobiliario. Al contrario, nuestro sello como empresa es que diseñamos prácticamente todo. En un espacio retail, lo hacemos con los sistemas de exhibición, mesas, acentos, etc. En el caso de los espacios interiores residenciales, vamos desde la cocina y los baños, hasta las mesas y las sillas. Todo aquello que se necesite diseñar para poderle dar vida a nuestra visión.

Lately we frequently notice the objective of using vintage or classic elements to generate the feeling that the spaces have a history or tradition, and even give the impression that they have been around for a longer time. The combination of modern and industrial spaces, with vintage touches, could be a trend right now. The designers of internal spaces are already trying with design, for example, of furniture, textiles and even elements that are part of the architecture. What do you think is the reason that this happening and why in particular, do you like the designing of furniture? We believe that it has to do with the need architects and designers have of analyzing each design with a more comprehensive approach. The designer has knowledge of the principles of design and its methodologies, and this can be applied to any branch of the applied arts. In our case, it works that way. Rarely do we design an interior where we do not to create a piece of furniture. On the contrary, our hallmark as a company is that we designed almost everything. In a retail space, we do so with exhibit stands, tables, accent, etc. In the case of the residential interior spaces, we begin with the kitchen and bathrooms and proceed with the tables and chairs, everything that needs to be designed to give life to our vision.

Su trabajo lo ha llevado desde construir una ecocabina con contenedores para los niños exploradores hasta ser uno de los líderes del equipo detrás del diseño de “The Jewel Box”, las oficinas de Gensler en Los Ángeles. Cree en la ciencia como motor del diseño y en el unir fuerzas de un equipo alrededor de una muy buena idea. The architect and current Design Director of Gensler in Costa Rica, Richard Hammond likes to read Carl Sagan and sunny days. His work has led him to build an eco-cabin with containers for the boy scouts and to be one of the leaders of the team behind the design of “The Jewel Box”, the offices of Gensler in Los Angeles. He believes in science as an engine for design and in joining forces around an outstanding idea.

Funcionalidad contra belleza. ¿Cómo se logra el equilibrio? Los buenos proyectos para mí son aquellos que tienen un equilibrio entre el arte y la ciencia. Los arquitectos logran cerrar esa brecha entre el ingeniero y el escultor. Creo que los proyectos exitosos son aquellos en los cuales no se va demasiado lejos en cualquiera de las direcciones. Considero que esto se logra cuando el arquitecto está abierto a ambos puntos de vista y, a través de un proceso de exploración e intuición, es capaz de dirigir. En una oficina como Gensler, orientada al trabajo en equipo, ¿cómo subsiste la individualidad en términos de la creatividad? En Gensler, tomamos la idea de que un proyecto es un esfuerzo en equipo. Sin embargo, practicamos también la teoría de “la mejor idea gana”. A principios de los proyectos, tratamos de juntar tantos puntos de vista como sea posible y luego, como director de diseño, mi papel es guiar ese proceso. Pero sólo logramos llegar a través de una gran cantidad de exploración y debate entre el personal. La verdad es que, aun cuando muchas personas están involucradas, una idea solo puede venir de una mente. El truco es lograr que todo el mundo se involucre en esa idea y que trabajen como un equipo para ejecutarla con eficacia.

Function vs beauty, how is balance achieved? Good projects to me are when there is that balance between art and science. Architects bridge that gap between engineer and sculptor. I think successful projects are ones where it doesn’t go too far in either direction. I think this is done when the architect is open to both sides and through a process of exploration and intuition is able to guide the project.

In an office like Gensler so oriented on team work, how individuality in terms of creativity subsists? At Gensler we embrace the idea that a project is a team effort. However we also practice the idea that the best idea wins. Early in projects we try to bring as many points of view as possible then as design director; my role is to guide that process. But we only get there through a lot of exploration and discussion amongst the staff. But the truth is that even when lots of people are involved, an idea can only come from one mind. The trick is to then get everybody behind that idea and then work as a team to execute it effectively.

Which is the most important criteria you use to deal with a new project? Understand two things. The problem or problems the project must address, and the opportunity of the project. We formulate this into a list of 5 or 6 design drivers. This list we often translate into a series of diagrams or images that then serve as a design guide. As we get deeper into the process of design, we check back and make sure are adhering to those principles.

Me ayuda a cuestionar las normas con las que me acostumbré a trabajar en los Estados Unidos y antes en Sudáfrica. Este cuestionamiento puede ayudar a desbloquear la creatividad. En Costa Rica, algunos requisitos funcionales básicos pueden hacer que los edificios sean muy diferentes en comparación con los Estados Unidos. El hecho de que se necesite más protección contra la lluvia conduce a grandes oportunidades de diseño comparado con California, donde hice la mayor parte de mi trabajo anteriormente. Las temperaturas moderadas de San José también hacen que los diseños tengan más posibilidad de eficiencia energética. Los edificios no necesitan ser cajones sellados de aire acondicionado. También siento que aquí hay más espacio para la exploración y la innovación en el diseño.

Respond to the site and context. Know the rules but find ways to break them. Design should delight.

It helps me question the norms that I became used to in the US and South Africa before that and this questioning can help unlock creativity. In Costa Rica some basic functional requirement can make for very different buildings compared to the US. Here the fact that you need more rain protection leads to great design opportunities compared to California where I did most of my work before. The moderate temperatures of San José also make more energy efficient designs possible. Buildings don’t need to sealed air-conditioned boxes. Also here I feel like there is more room for exploration and innovation with design.

El Parque Nacional Torres del Paine es el quinto lugar más hermoso del mundo de acuerdo con National Geographic y también ganó el premio de la Octava Maravilla del Mundo. Esta atracción chilena se localiza a 312 kilómetros de la ciudad de Punta Arenas y fue declarada por la Unesco Reserva de la Biosfera el 28 de abril de 1978.

Torres del Paine National Park is the fifth most beautiful place of the world according to National Geographic and also won the award for the Eighth Wonder of the world. This Chilean attraction is located 312 kilometers from the city of Punta Arenas and was declared by UNESCO, Environmental Reserve on April 28, 1978.

Las Torres del Paine son un conjunto de enormes monolitos de granito compuestos por tres torres, la mayor de ellas de 2.850 metros de altura. Dentro del parque hay opciones de alojamiento de diferentes categorías; la mayoría incluye las tres comidas y las principales excursiones dentro del parque, como la visita a Base Torres, mirador Cuernos, lago Pehoe y el imponente glaciar Grey, entre otros. Además, es el destino ideal para la práctica de trekking, hiking y pesca. El Parque Nacional está abierto todo el año, pero la mejor época para visitarlo es entre octubre y abril, lo que coincide con la primavera y verano en el hemisferio sur. Esta época se caracteriza por presentar días más soleados, menos lluvias y más de 16 horas de luz natural, producto de la posición de la Tierra.

Inside the park there are accommodation options of different categories; the majority includes three meals and the main tours within the park, such as the visit to Base Towers, Cuernos sightseeing post, Lago Pehoe and Gray Glacier, among others. In addition, it is the ideal destination for trekking, hiking and fishing. The National Park is open year round, but the best time to visit is between October and April, which coincides with spring and summer in the southern hemisphere. This time of the year is characterized by more sunny days, less rain and more than 16 hours of natural light, product of the position of the Earth.

Emplazada sobre un paisaje de estepa, sorprende a los visitantes la amplitud de sus vistas, el color turquesa del Lago Argentino y la vegetación propia de una zona desértica. El Calafate debe su nombre al arbusto que antiguamente ocupaba la zona. Es una planta propia de la estepa, en primavera se cubre de flores amarillas muy vistosas, y su fruto es de la familia de los berberys, muy pequeño y color violeta oscuro. La zona de los Glaciares fue declarada parque nacional para la conservación de su belleza, única en el mundo. Destaca el Glaciar Perito Moreno por su majestuosidad. La excursión a este sitio es obligatoria y se ofrece de diferentes formas, ya sea con un recorrido por las pasarelas o bien a bordo de un yate que se acerca a unos 300 metros de la pared principal. Por último, está la caminata sobre el glaciar, que se realiza en aproximadamente dos horas, y durante la cual se puede apreciar una variedad de formaciones de hielo, como grietas, seracs, sumideros, pequeñas lagunas, etc.

Located on a steppe landscape, the visitors are surprised by the extent of the view, the turquoise color blue of the Lake Argentino and the vegetation characteristic of a desert area. El Calafate owes its name to the shrub that formerly occupied the area. It is a plant commonly seen on the steppe, in spring it is covered with very attractive yellow flowers, and its fruit is of the family of the berberys, very small and dark violet. The glacier area was declared a national park for the conservation of its beauty, unique in the world. The Perito Moreno Glacier stands out for its majesty. The excursion to this site is mandatory and is offered in different ways, either with a tour of the paths or on board a yacht that is about 300 meters from the main stern. Finally, there is the walk on the glacier, which takes about two hours, during which you can appreciate a variety of ice formations, such as cracks, seracs, basins, small lagoons, etc.

Desembarcar en el Aeropuerto Kennedy para la Semana de Diseño en Nueva York es un hecho envidiable por sí solo. Aterrizar en la antigua terminal de la aerolínea TWA, diseñada en 1962 por Eero Saarinen, es un testimonio de que Nueva York ha sido continuamente la meca del diseño. Casa Galería visitó, en esta ciudad, el International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) y extrajo los hallazgos indispensables de la temporada.

Disembarking at JFK International Airport for New York Design week is an enviable event onto itself. Landing at the former TWA Terminal, designed in 1962 by Eero Saarinen, is a testament that New York has persistently been a design mecca. Casa Galeria visited, in this city, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) and extracted the essential findings of the season.

Design insiders often have a jaded view of the New York International Contemporary Furniture Fair. While it may be true that the event seems lacking in innovative shows, there were some significant trends worth mentioning and we will mention them for you.

Mid Century Modern is back and is here to stay. Besides the nostalgic of past times, this trend that has captured the next generation of furniture lovers.

Las maderas texturizadas y otros materiales con texturas, formatos escalenos y dinámicos tenían un papel predominante. Estas características acercaron la tendencia a los años 70. Las piezas tenían formas y figuras toscas; daba la impresión de que estos jóvenes diseñadores seguían la línea de tiempo de la serie de televisión AMC, Mad Men.

Textural woods and textural materials with dynamic scalene forms were prominent throughout the show. These features moved the trend closer to the 70’s. The pieces had brute forms and shapes. It seemed as though these young designers were following the timeline of AMC Television series, Mad Men.

Por su parte, los elementos más notorios fueron los que se alejaron de las formas constructivas convencionales.

The items that were more noticeable were those that moved away from conventional constructive forms.

Igualmente, permitió el examen de nuevas nociones, ver a viejos amigos, hacer nuevas amistades y codearse con extraños influyentes. Una semana inspiradora y de nuevas ideas.

Parties were distributed throughout the city like a spider web. This week captured the productive and imaginative vision of the city. It also, allowed the examination of new notions, seeing old friends and making new friendships and rubbing shoulders with influential strangers. An inspiring week full of new ideas.

I left NY not with a bag of brochures and designer catalogues under my arm, but with a galloping imagination of what there is to come in the near future.

Los clásicos imperdibles The unforgettable classics Caminando por los pasillos del show, visité algunos clásicos que agregan elementos cada año a sus espectaculares creaciones. Ellos mejoran y expanden sus conceptos de diseño hasta conducirlos a la casi perfección. Molo, una empresa canadiense con sede en Vancouver, hace un uso elegante de los materiales sencillos y muestra una colección que incluye un impresionante banco de paredes finas. Al final, las piezas forman, en conjunto, un nuevo sistema modular para sentarse y para dividir espacios.

Strolling the isles of the show I revisited some classics that add each year to their spectacular creations, improving and expanding their design concepts perpetually nearing perfection. Molo, a Canadian company based in Vancouver, elegantly make use of humble materials and displayed a collection that included an impressive bench + thinwall, which together form a new modular seating and partitioning system.

Molo es el amo que recalca la importancia de la “forma + espacio”. Ellos activaron en mí el deseo de ubicarme en su estand durante toda la semana. El Molo “Cloud Softlight”, que lanzaron en 2012, es aún uno de los más impresionantes objetos de diseño que he visto en los últimos años. Busqué también el estand de OsO, un estudio de diseño centrado en las nuevas aplicaciones de hormigón para la construcción de muebles y diseño interior personalizado. Inspirado por el escultor y fundador Eric Weil, su equipo diseña artesanalmente muebles multifuncionales y elementos arquitectónicos en hormigón y otros materiales. Sus formas son simples y geométricas. OsO puso en marcha el programa Aperiodix: un sistema de mosaicos basado en un conjunto de tres triángulos que se pueden colocar en patrones aperiódicos, o no repetidos, que resultaban en diseños interesantes y únicos. La cara de cada mosaico triangular tiene una superficie ondulante que se alinea siempre con el mosaico de al lado, sin importar cuál diseño sigue. A medida que nos aproximamos a la parte delantera del show, se podía apreciar al diseñador francés Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance con la humilde introducción a su magnífica labor a través de una fina silla mecedora de madera. Si Noé no forma aún parte de su “radar de diseño”, debería conocerlo. Es uno de los diseñadores de interiores más buscados y está dedicado por completo a una determinada estética. Sus piezas son naturales y sus formas orgánicas transmiten una sensación de perfección hasta el último detalle. Él y su Neonata Design Studio son el tour obligado detrás de proyectos ejemplares como el Salón Air France Lounge-Roissy, en el Charles de Gaulle Aeropuerto Internacional de París.

Molo is the master at emphasizing the importance of “form + space” and triggered my desire to park myself in their booth for the entire week. The Molo “cloud soft light pendant + mobile” that was launched in 2012 is still one the most stunning design objects I have seen in recent years. I also looked for the stand of OsO Industries, a design studio focused on new applications of concrete for furniture and custom interior design. Inspired by sculptor and founder Eric Weil, his team individually hand crafts multifunctional furniture and architectural elements featuring concrete and other materials in clean, geometric forms. OsO launched “Aperiodix”; a tiling system based on a set of three triangles that can be laid out in aperiodic, or non- repeating patterns, which results in interesting and unique pattern fields. The face of each triangular tile has an undulating surface that will

always line up with the neighboring tile, no matter which pattern is followed. Inspired by the “Girih” system used in Islamic Mosques, this tiling system was truly exquisite. As you came around towards the front of show, you could spot the French designer Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance with his humble introduction to his magnificent work via an exquisite rocking wood chair. If Noé is not part of your “design-radar” he should be. He is one of the most sought-after interior designers who is entirely devoted to a particular esthetic. His pieces have natural shapes and organic lines that convey a sense of perfection down to the last details. He and his Neonata Design Studio are “The Tour de Force” behind exemplary projects like the Air-France Salon Business LoungeRoissy, at Charles des Gaulle International Airport in Paris.

A group of whimsical designers headed by its founder Gaurav Nanda displayed a playful collection of Outdoor + Indoor modern chairs. Their booth was filled with an outstanding range of colors, with a new and out of this world version of their chairs in metallic colors like bronze and gold.

Estos cuatro talentosos arquitectos han creado una extensa colección de mobiliario elegante e hicieron una fabulosa consola llamada Overlin, tallada en un único trozo de mármol escultórico. Esta pieza cuenta con increíbles líneas y está colocada sobre una base sólida de bronce silicio. The stand-out list in the furniture department was: Khouri, Guzmán, Bunce and Lininger. These four talented architects have created an extensive collection of neat furniture, made a fabulous console called the “Overlin,” which is carved from a single piece of statuary marble. The piece has incredible lines set atop a solid silicon bronze base.

Robin Reigi can be accredited with the title of “The Ma-Material Girl”. She has dedicated her keen eye to resource the most Avantguard decorative materials around the globe. Once again, her booth presented a collection of novel textural materials. There were translucent concrete slabs with encapsulated fiber optics, which added a new dimension to the roughness of cement.

There are so many types of design in the world. For this reason, choosing just a few is very difficult. However, I accepted the challenge for this section. I made a choice that will show what not many people know… what one has to appreciate among the unknown.

Mezclé piezas clásicas con contemporáneas. Estas comparten elementos de ligereza y delicadeza, aunque usen materiales y formas completamente distintas. La apariencia de fragilidad y lo delgado de sus perfiles desafían la gravedad.

I mixed classical pieces with contemporary ones. They shared elements of lightness and delicacy, even though the use of materials and forms are completely different. The fragile and thin appearance of their profiles defies gravity.

asta hace pocos meses, miles de piezas de las colecciones arqueológica, etnográfica y de arte del Museo del Jade y Arte Precolombino del Instituto Nacional de Seguros (INS) estaban almacenadas, desconocidas y solitarias. Esta, una de las colecciones institucionales más ricas de América, permanecía aislada porque no había espacio suficiente para exhibirla ante el público en los 600 m2 con los que disponía el INS, en el primer piso de su sede central, para albergar el Museo. Por estos motivos, desde hace unos seis años, la administración del Instituto optó por invertir en la construcción de un nuevo edificio que supliera esta necesidad primordial: exhibir las 6.881 piezas precolombinas de jade, piedra y cerámica; 40 objetos de la colección etnográfica y 388 obras artísticas de autores contemporáneos, según relató Laura Rodríguez, directora del Museo. Además de realizar esta inversión, se quiso convertir además este espacio en un centro cultural, que cumpliera las tres funciones fundamentales de un museo: difusión, exhibición y educación.

ntil a few months ago, thousands of pieces of the archaeological, ethnographic collection of the art museum of Jade and Pre-Columbian Art of the National Insurance Institute (INS) were stored, unknown and solitary. This, one of the richest institutional collections in America, remained isolated because there was not enough space to house the Museum in the 600 m2 available on the first floor of its headquarters at INS, and to display it to the public. For this reason, six years ago, the administration of the Institute decided to invest in the construction of a new building that fulfilled the important need: showcase the 6,881 pieces of pre-Columbian jade, stone and ceramic; 40 objects of the ethnographic collection and 388 works of art by contemporary authors, stated Laura Rodriguez, director of the Museum. In addition to making this investment, it also wanted to convert this space into a cultural center, which could meet with the three fundamental functions of a museum: dissemination, exhibition and education.

As if it were a part of its archaeological collection, the new building of the Museum of Jade and Pre-Columbian Arts stands in the heart of San Jose, Costa Rica with a renewed appearance. The Museum, owned by the National Insurance Institute, went from displaying a fifth of its collection, on the first floor of the headquarters of this Institute, to a having a new building of almost 7,000 m2 to display all of its collection. PENSAR, DISEÑAR Y CONSTRUIR LA PIEDRA

THINK, DESIGN AND BUILD THE ROCK

Ubicado en el centro de San José, la nueva sede del museo surge como una piedra robusta, que deja entrever un corazón de jade, en medio de la ciudad. De esta manera, fue concebido por Diego van der Laat, arquitecto del estudio sanjosérevés, cuya conceptualización de este edificio fue ganadora de un concurso promovido por el INS, a inicios de 2012, para tales efectos. Según comentó, un desliz temporal y la inspiración de una canción contribuyeron a tener la idea original del proyecto.

Located in the center of San Jose, the new headquarters of the museum emerges as a solid rock, which suggests a heart of jade, in the middle of the city. This is the way it was designed by Diego van der Laat, architect of the firm sanjosereves, whose conceptualization of this building was the winner of a competition promoted by INS, in early 2012, for such effects. As he commented, a temporary blunder and the inspiration from a song helped to discover the original idea of the project.

“Estuvimos encerrados cuatro días para trabajar en la conceptualización del edificio del museo. La idea resultante era simple; consistía en un edificio con una grieta a través de la cual iba a entrar la luz, emulando una veta de jade en una piedra. Esta ruptura sería su belleza”, expresó van der Laat. “Era más un acercamiento a la forma primaria de la arquitectura, sin entenderla como un modernismo pero sí usando la sencillez y la pureza. Queríamos que se viera este bloque como una pieza más de la colección del museo”, agregó.

“We were locked up four days to work in the conceptualization of the museum’s building. The resulting idea was simple; it consisted of a building with a crack through which light would enter, emulating a vein of jade on stone. This rift would be its beauty,” said van der Laat. “It was more an approach to the primary form of architecture, without understanding it as a modernism but using simplicity and purity. We wanted this block to be seen as one more piece of the collection of the museum,” he added.

Un consorcio tomó, posteriormente, las riendas del desarrollo de este edificio. Piasa Constructores se encargó del diseño, con base en la conceptualización de Diego van der Laat; lo construyó la empresa Edica y Margen Rojo, empresa mexicana, desarrolló el guión museográfico del proyecto. El resultado es hoy la nueva casa de piezas de jade, piedra, hueso y cerámica, entre otras. Es una casa muy grande: no solo logra exhibir las colecciones del Museo, sino que tiene una capacidad para atender a unas 300 personas diariamente.

After, a conglomerate took over the development of this building. PIASA Constructors were responsible for the design, based on the concept by Diego van der Laat; the Mexican company Edica Margen y Rojo built and developed the museographic project. The result today is the new home of jade, stone, bone and pottery pieces, among others. It is a very large house: not only does it exhibit the collections of the Museum, but has a capacity to allow 300 daily visitors.

David Montero, arquitecto senior de Piasa Constructores, afirmó que se trató de un proyecto doble: hacer un museo inigualable tanto desde el punto de vista externo como para la experiencia del usuario. “La fachada es un hito; no hay otra igual. Es ventilada con una doble piel, con piezas de porcelanato sobre guías metálicas ancladas a una estructura de hierro, adosada a marcos de concreto principales, vidrio y aluminio. La fachada refleja fragmentos de piedra; son paredes irregulares pero, al verlas de lejos, dan un efecto de unidad y de robustez”, explicó Montero. En sus palabras, el visitante tendrá una experiencia envolvente, pues Margen Rojo realizó un guión museográfico que incorpora iluminación, elementos audiovisuales y una ambientación muy diferente y no lineal, que le permite a la persona ser partícipe de la visita y no solo observar las piezas de la colección. “Pienso que el edificio y la museografía reflejan con definición, con un lenguaje conciso y fuerte, que en Costa Rica no solo había sociedades estructuradas con un nivel muy avanzado en la parte tecnológica, sino también un intercambio muy importante de influencias y culturas que lo reflejamos en nuestra idiosincrasia”, agregó este arquitecto.

David Montero, senior architect of PIASA Constructors, stated that it was a double project: make a unique museum from both the external point of view as for the experience of the visitor. “The facade is a milestone; there is no other equal to it. It is vented with a double-skin, with pieces of Porcelanato on metal guides anchored to an iron structure, attached to the main concrete frames, glass and aluminum. The facade reflects fragments of stone; they are irregular walls but, when you see them from a distance, they give an effect of unity and strength”, explained Montero. In his words, the visitor will have a surround experience, since Margen Rojo made a museographic script that incorporates museum lighting, audio and video elements and a very different non-linear ambience, which allows a person to share the visit and not only observe the parts of the collection. “I think that the building and the museography reflect with definition, a concise and strong language, that Costa Rica not only had structured societies with a very advanced level in technology, but also a very important exchange of influences and cultures which we reflect in our idiosyncrasy”, added this architect.

El emplazamiento urbano del Museo es un elemento más que estos arquitectos tomaron en cuenta. El edificio está ubicado al oeste de la Plaza de la Democracia y sus vecinos son edificaciones de importante valor histórico y emblemático, como la Asamblea Legislativa, el Poder Judicial y un futuro boulevard al costado.

The urban location of the Museum is one more element that these architects took into account. The building is located west of the Plaza de la Democracia and its neighbors are important buildings of historical and emblematic value, such as the Legislative Assembly, the Judiciary Building and a future boulevard to the side. “I think that the style of Museum gives it license to be very different, separate from the environment. Also, the Jade Museum has height and is separate from these buildings and there is no competition,” said van der Laat.

“Considero que la tipología de Museo puede tener la licencia de ser muy diferente, de separarse del entorno. La renovada estructura cuenta con un sótano y cinco pisos, entre los cuales se distribuyen las salas de exposición temática, como “Jade”, donde se aborda la forma de trabajo de este material, o “Día y Noche”, en donde se retratan a nuestros aborígenes y sus costumbres; también, hay una sala de “Acopio” en donde se incluye la colección no exhibida en las salas temáticas. Además, para lograr su cometido de convertirse en un centro cultural, el nuevo edificio del Museo del Jade cuenta con facilidades como un taller de museografía, una cafetería y terraza, una tienda de souvenirs, un auditorio para 150 personas y aulas-taller. Cuando el Museo del Jade y el Arte Precolombino de Costa Rica se ubicaba en su anterior sede, recibía unas 20.000 personas por año. Hoy, con menos de tres meses de haber abierto sus puertas al público, ha recibido a 10.000 en su nueva morada y el número sigue creciendo.

At the entrance, la Boiserie stands out (wood paneling on walls used in France in the XVII and XVIII centuries) that were purchased from The Antique Shops of San Enrique. These decorations are accompanied an iron console painted in white by designer Alberto Yunta. The sculpture of an angel climbing a ladder is by Hope D’Ors. The rug was acquired in India.

La sala tiene dos ambientes: una zona de estar de doble altura, que cuenta con una chimenea, dos sofás enfrentados y cojines de Gastón y Daniela. La otra área es para la televisión, donde el acento lo da la gran foto siliconada sobre metacrilato de la serie Halong de Dionisio González.

The living room has two sections: a sitting area with double height ceilings, which features a fireplace, two sofas and cushions facing each other by Gaston and Daniela. The other area is for the television, where the emphasis is on the large photograph of the series Halong by Dionisio González in methacrylate silicone.

Asimismo, en la planta baja, se sitúa el comedor, donde predomina el blanco y el negro. Esta zona gana independencia gracias a un tabique extenso de separación. Destaca la gran lámpara de araña de hierro negro del diseñador Piet Heim Eek, un óleo del pintor español Ricardo Cavada, un cuadro de Alex Arrechea y el osito escultura es de dEmo.

Lo clásico mira de reojo a lo moderno En el segundo piso, está el dormitorio, que abre a la terraza gracias a un enorme ventanal totalmente retráctil. Como en toda la casa, el suelo es de mármol blanco despiezado en láminas; sobre este, descansa la alfombra blanca de seda natural traída por A-cero IN de la India. Llaman la atención dos butacas de piel de color blanco de Eames para Vitra. El escritorio de Berenis es italiano de los años 50; sobre este, encontramos una lámpara danesa de Tiempos Modernos y una litografía de José Manuel Broto y la silla del S XIX de Pep Boixader. La zona de juegos, que también funciona como estudio de los niños, se viste con sillas verdes de principios del siglo pasado de Cucamona, lámparas de estudio de Ikea y futbolín de Vinçon. Los dormitorios de los peques son funcionales y pensados para el descanso. No se vale salir, sin regresar a la piscina. Vale la pena hacerlo por la tarde, cuando la casa se ilumina por dentro como un faro y, desde afuera, el sol tiñe de colores este lienzo blanco…

The classic glances at the modern On the second floor, is the bedroom, which opens to the terrace through large retractable doors. As in the entire house, the floor is made up of sections of white marble; on it lies the white carpet of natural silk brought by A-cero IN from India. The two armchairs of white leather by Eames for Vitra stand out. The desk by Berenis is Italian of the 50’s; on this, we find a Danish lamp by Tiempos Modernos and a lithograph by José Manuel Broto and the chair by the S XIX from Pep Boixader.

The gaming area, which also serves as a study for the children, are decorated with green chairs from the beginning of the last century by Cucamona, study lamps by Ikea and foosball ( Table Soccer) by Vinçon. The bedrooms of the little ones are functional and designed for relaxation.

One should not leave without returning to the pool. It is worth doing it in the afternoon, when the house lights up on the inside like a lighthouse and on the outside, the sun colors this white canvas…
