* On April 17, 1882, several copies of Sheriff Pat Garrett’s wildly inauthentic, fictionalized biography, “An Authentic Life of Billy the Kid,” arrive at the Library of Congress. The first full, realistic biography of William Bonney (the Kid’s principal alias) was not published until 1989. * On April 16, 1897, Frederick William Winterbotham, one of Britain’s top code breakers, is born. Winterbotham would play a decisive role in the World War II Ultra code-breaking project, enabling MI-6 to intercept top secret messages transmitted to and between German armed forces. * On April 14, 1912, just before midnight in the North Atlantic, the RMS Titanic fails to divert its course from an iceberg, ruptures its hull, and begins to sink. The Titanic’s hull was divided into 16 presumed watertight compartments, and the ocean liner was considered unsinkable. * On April 11, 1921, KDKA in Pittsburgh broadcasts the first live sporting event on the radio, a boxing match. Radio had been used primarily for two-way communication, but KDKA became the first licensed radio station in 1920. Months later the first Major League Baseball game was broadcast. * On April 12, 1945, President Franklin Roosevelt dies of a cerebral hemorrhage at his home in Warm Springs, Georgia. BASEBALL: RISING SUN vs NORTH EAST
Tuesday, March 29, 2022
WHITEMAN LEADS INDIANS TO 7-3 WIN RISING SUN - North East Senior Jacob Whiteman slammed the door in relief and drove in three runs to push North East past Rising Sun 7-3 on Friday in one of the most anticipated matchups of the season. The Indians’ bats struck first in the first inning with Whiteman getting his
first RBI of the afternoon off a fly ball to right field scoring Ethan Flaugher. The Indians would send 7 batters to the plate and be up 3-0 early in the first inning. Luke Keefer started for the Indians striking out two of the first four batters but a walk and a double by Matty Lynch put runners at
2nd and 3rd and the tying run at the plate with 2 outs. With the count 0-2 , Cole Derosa would ground out ending the inning with the score 3-0. Rising Sun Ace Matty Lynch would strike out the first two batters in the second inning and walk North East’s C. Balok on a full count, before Ethan Flaugher would end ground out for the third out. In the bottom of the second inning with only one out the Tigers would once again have runners on second and third but Keefer would strike out the next two
batters to end the inning and keeping the Tigers scoreless through the first two innings. Matty Lynch would walk Luke Keefer and Jacob Whiteman to start the third inning before being replaced on the mound by Hayden Spioch with runners at first and second. Spioch would strike out Austin Keefer for the first out. R. James hits a hard ground ball and reaches base on an error by Brandon Uhde at third which also allows Luke Keefer to score putting the Indians up 4-0. North East’s G Bolender grounds into a double
play to retire the side and bring up the bottom of the third inning. Sean Seibel grounds out to start the bottom of the third before the Indians would have trouble as Keefer walked the next two batters. The Indians would then send in their ace Jacob Whiteman as relief who also walked his first batter and loaded the bases. Senior Hayden Spioch had a full count when he hits a pop fly to right field and is thrown out as he attempts to take third but Lynch, McNeill and Derosa had scored and brought the Tigers within one of tying the game and energized the Tigers and the home crowd. Whiteman would take control on the mound for the next 4 innings holding the Tigers at 3 runs while also getting his 3rd RBI in the fourth inning as the Indians jumped out to a 7-3 lead that held up to win the game. The Tigers and Indians will play again April 11.

SOFTBALL: RISING SUN vs NORTH EAST

TIGERS vs INDIANS CECIL COUNTY’S TOP PITCHERS FACE OFF IN GAME WE HAVE WAITED FOR ALL YEAR
The much anticipated matchup between Rising Sun’s Lady Tigers Softball Team and the North East Indians has been a game Rising Sun fans have waited for all year. These teams last faced each other in June of last summer after graduation in the Regional Championship game when the Indians defeated the Tigers 6-2 in a Saturday game that cost Rising Sun having several of their starters. Although no championship was on the line this week, both teams wanted this win most of all. Starting pitchers for the game were the same as last year with Rising Sun Senior Abby McBride in the circle for Rising Sun against North East’s Ace, Senior Alesia Doctor. The fan attendance was higher than usual much like you would expect for a playoff contest. Due to heavy rains the day before the game the field conditions were far from perfect but it was a great day to watch two of Cecil County’s best softball teams face off. Both pitchers would go the distance and pitch the entire game with Doctor pitch-
ing six innings , striking out nine and giving up 6 hits facing 23 batters. McBride would pitch to the seventh inning, striking out 11 while only giving up 3 hits the entire game. Doctor had 63 strikes on 89 pitches compared to McBride’s 70 strikes on 114 pitches facing 26 batters. The first inning started with a walk as McBride walked Kenzie Langshaw to lead off the inning. Langshaw would steal second before Alesia Doctor singles to right field with Langshaw being held up at third. Doctor would advance to second base on the throw home. McBride would strike out the next two batters to get out of the inning with North East unable to get their runners in to score. The Tigers’ bats would be first to score in the third inning when Catherine Meadows would be walked to first followed by a Sam Dixon single to center field. Meadows would steal 3rd and score as Sam Dixon steals 2nd giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. McBride would quickly strike out the first two batters of the fourth inning before Allyson Miklas would bunt to
get on base. A ground ball to Faith McCullough on the next batter would get Miklas out at second and bring up the bottom of the fourth inning. Jordan Lynch leads off the fourth inning with a single to right field. Lynch would steal second with McCullough at bat and hits a line drive single to center field advancing Lynch to third. McCullough steals second before Cadence Williams flies out but it allows Lynch to score. with two outs, McCullough scores when Meadows hits a single giving the Tigers a 3-0 lead. McBride would ground out to get the Indians out of the inning. Rising Sun looked like it might be able to add a few more runs in the sixth inning but Doctor picks off McCullough at second base in a double play to end the inning. The Indians are unable to get runners on base in the top of the seventh which ended the contest with a final score of 3-0 Rising Sun. These two great teams will face each other again on April 11 at North East and we anticipate seeing them again in the regional finals this year.

* Not ones to marry in haste and repent at leisure, a Paraguayan couple set up housekeeping in 1933.
