2A EAST INDOOR TRACK REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

By Amanda Callaghan

The time had come. All of the training, all of the hard workouts on a snow-covered track, all of the effort, had come to this meet. The MPSSAA 2A East Region Championships took place on Wednesday, February 9th. It was a gorgeous day as Elkton, North East, and Rising Sun boarded the buses, heading for the Worcester County Recreation Center near Ocean City, MD. All of the Eastern Shore’s 2A track teams had converged for the deciding meet. While athletes sat in the center, the 168-meter track beckoned with every turn; it was impossible not to address the importance of the meet. Only the top four runners in each event would move on to the Maryland 2A State Championships, set to occur on February 16th. The rest of the athletes seasons’ would reach an end. The tension was palpable as athletes listened to the meet announcements, occurring before the first event. All 15 teams were quiet, anxiously awaiting the sound of the starting gun. As soon as the gun sounded to start the preliminaries of the 55-meter hurdles, the meet was off! The Regional Meet was unlike any of the other meets that had been run during the Cecil County indoor track season. Specifically, it was the first indoor meet for many of the runners. New challenges were faced running on an indoor track, rather than the standard, 400m outdoor track. Runners had to wear different shoes to maintain the integrity of the track, relay exchange zones had changed, and more laps with a smaller

sight distance were only some of the unique challenges. Nevertheless, Cecil’s teams performed phenomenally. In the women’s competition, Rising Sun won third place with a total of 63.5 points. North East followed, earning 10th place with 20 points, in front of Elkton, who earned 12th place with 16 points. In the men’s competition, Rising Sun was the top-scoring Cecil team, earning 6th with 36 points, followed very closely by Elkton in 7th place, earning 35 points. North East won 14th with 4 points. Many athletes from Elkton, North East, and Rising Sun qualified for the state championships. Elkton’s qualifying athletes include Sytieia Brown, who won the regional title in the shot put, earning first with an amazing throw of 38 feet and 5 inches. Elkton’s Torien Newton won second in the 55m dash (6.84) and fourth in the 300m (38.10). Elkton and Rising Sun’s relays performed exceptionally well, with Elkton’s men’s 4x200 (Douglas McGonigle, Torien Newton, Brandon Turner, Allan Tate - 1:39.50) placing second, and Elkton’s men’s 4x400 (Douglas McGonigle, Langston Belser, Tyson Caprinolo, Brandon Turner - 3:53.85) placing third. In the women’s relays, Rising Sun qualified in every event. Sun’s 4x200 finished fourth (Lexi Haywood, Kaitlyn Martin, Carly McCardell, Caroline Mercer - 2:00.07) while their 4x400 finished second (Georgia Mercer, Anna Callaghan, Amanda Callaghan, Katelyn Lacey - 4:37.39). Rising Sun’s 4x800 captured the regional title, running an 11:08.12.9 (Amanda Callaghan, Eve Poteet, Kate-

lynn Callaghan, Katelyn Lacey). Individuals from Rising Sun qualifying for States include Katelyn Lacey earning fourth in the 500m (1:27.28), Amanda Callaghan earning second in the 800m (2:36.39), Savannah Lacey earning third in the 1600m (6:09.55), Ella Cost earning fourth in the 55m hurdles (10.07), Carly McCardell earning fourth in the pole vault (6’0”), and Dylan Zahn also earning fourth in the pole vault (8’0”). North East’s Leanna Rogers also qualified for States, earning fourth in the 1600m (6:12.32). Cecil County dominated in the high jump. In the women’s high jump, North East’s Brin Khanjar won the regional title, clearing five feet. Following her in second was Rising Sun’s Amanda Callaghan (4’08”). In the men’s high jump, Rising Sun’s David Greenplate claimed the regional title, jumping five feet four inches. He was followed by his teammate, Brigdon Bishop, winning second (5’04”). All of the Cecil County runners performed amazingly, representing their coaches, teams, and county with pride, all while displaying strong team spirit that set Cecil County’s teams apart from other teams. Congratulations to the State Qualifiers and all of the participants in the meet!

GRIFFINS DOMINATE SECOND HALF FOR A HUGE LEAD OVER RAMS PROVIDENCE BLOWS OPEN SECOND HALF FOR BIG WIN OVER WEST NOTTINGHAM RAMS By Kevin Phillips

COLORA–Despite playing short-handed, West Nottingham Academy played well for the first quarter and half against visiting Providence Christian Academy Friday evening. Eventually, the short bench proved to be too much to overcome as the Griffins took control of the game in the second quarter before pulling away for a 71-37 victory over the Rams in Mid-Atlantic Independent League boys’ basketball action. “I wanted to throw out a little bit of pressure. I like to play

with pressure just to make the other team doubt themselves a little bit,” West Nottingham head coach Aaron Byrd said of his team’s strong start. “We came out with the press, and I think that discombobulated them a little bit. We were able to get a lot more possessions. We like to play fast and get teams rushing a bit. That was working a bit.” The press allowed the Rams to create more scoring opportunities in the first quarter as they jumped out to a 17-14 lead after eight minutes, but Providence kept pace with West Nottingham thanks to four made three-pointers by Nelson Ro-

driquez in the first quarter. The Rams maintained a 22-19 advantage midway through the second quarter before the Griffins adjusted to the press and proceeded to close the second quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 30-24 lead into halftime. Providence continued to pour it on in the third quarter as it increased its lead to 49-31 after outscoring West Nottingham 19-7 in the frame thanks to Jon McAndrews’ 10 points in the frame. The Griffins put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter as they won the frame

22-7 to secure the victory. The Rams played without several key contributors in their lineup, and that prevented them from maintaining its early pace. However, Byrd was still pleased with the effort his team put up. “I’m not the type of person to make excuses because I’m all about effort. They gave their full out effort out there,” Byrd said. McAndrews led Providence with 23 points while Rodriquez chipped in 22 points, and West Nottingham was paced by Gilberto Palma-Velez’s 23 points.

TIGERS PROVE TOUGHER TO BEAT SECOND TIME AROUND By Kevin Phillips

NORTH EAST–There was a clash of styles as visiting TriState Christian Academy performed better when the game was played over the full court while host Rising Sun played better in the half-court set in the teams’ nonconference boys’ basketball contest Thursday night. The Crusaders’ style won out in the end as they turned up the pressure in the fourth quarter, holding the Tigers to just six points in the final eight minutes to earn a 65-59 victory. “We became a lot more active in the fourth quarter and applied a lot more pressure,” Tri-State coach Brendon Smith said. “They were having success in the half court, so we wanted them to run up-and-

down with us. I thought we were the better team in the full court while they were better in the half-court, so we tried to make it a faster, up-tempo game. It plays more to our strengths.” The Crusaders entered the fourth quarter trailing 53-52, but after experiencing some success with the full-court press in the third quarter, they employed it for the entirety of the final frame. That switch proved to be successful early in the final quarter as Tri-State sped up the Tigers and forced more turnovers, which sparked a 9-0 run to take control of the game. With Rising Sun holding a 57-55 lead early in the fourth, Kyle Rogers made a layup that tied the game at 57-57, and on the ensuring inbound play, Rogers forced a turnover and made another

layup to give the Crusaders a lead for good at 59-57. Smith added another basket to make it a 4-point game, and Sam Falko made a three-pointer with 3:59 left in the game to cap the run and increase Tri-State’s lead to 64-59. Rogers said the press defense was the key to the Crusaders’ strong fourth quarter. “Coach [Smith] called the press there, and it really helped us,” Rogers said. “We were able to take the ball away from their ball handlers and get some steals.” Mason McNeil brought the Tigers back within five points with a field goal with 2:42 remaining, but both teams struggled down the stretch as they combined for 1 point the rest of the way to allow Tri-State to hold on to the victory. Despite the loss, Ris-

ing Sun showed massive improvement from the last time it played the Crusaders in a 72-28 loss on January 27, and Lammers said the Tigers’ offensive improvement was a result of a more deliberate offense. “We came out and weren’t in a hurry. We were patient in the first half. We passed the ball around and got open looks,” Lammers said. “We went down low. When they went manto-man in the second half, we got a little out of sorts, threw the ball away a couple of times, and let them back in the game.” Jeremiah Falko paced the Tri-State with 17 points with Rogers and Jackson Sartin chipping in 15 and 14 points respectively. Jeremy Frock scored 25 points while McNeil had 15 for Rising Sun.

TOME TITANS WIN ON SENIOR NIGHT PHOTOS BY KARINA SERIO

By Karina Serio

The Tome School bagged a 58-52 win for first-year head coach Doe Goldman on Senior Night against the visiting Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The Titans and Saints traded leads early in the matchup, with the FCA leading 25-24 at the half. Tome came out from the break and outscored the Saints 15-6 in the third quarter to pull ahead where they stayed for the remainder of the game. Micah Champ drained 17 points for FCA. TJ Kinard added 15. Gavin Davis knocked down 17 points for Tome. Taven Nunley added 13.

Tome’s seniors reflected on their time playing for the Titans:

Gavin Davis:

“It’s the best feeling, being out here playing with my teammates. It’s the last time I’m going to be able to do it so I was trying to make the best of it and that’s what we did tonight. We’ve had a rough season but I got to play with my favorite people and we got a couple wins. It’s cool to try and leave a legacy behind, teaching the younger kids how to do what we do and to even try and be better than we are. ”

Taven Nunley:

“I’ve been going to Tome my whole life and its just cool that

all the YMCA basketball all the middle school basketball, and all the high school basketball culminates into one night. It was pretty cool and really special. Just getting to have a season and playing with the people I love means a lot

Ryotaro Orihara:

“Being a senior on the team comes with the responsibility of having to help lead the team on and off the court. On senior night, I was hyped and excited to be able to play in front of all my friends and family coming out to support me. It was great that we got a win too; it made the night really special.”

PEEL LEADS THE WAY ON SENIOR NIGHT PHOTOS BY KARINA SERIO

By Karina Serio

The Lady Titans rebounded from recent losses just in time for senior night Friday against the visiting Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Tied at the end of the first half, due to the Titans balanced attack on both sides of the court they were able to put up 22 points in the third quarter leading to a 44-30 win for the lady Titans. Emersen Peel lead found her stride after dealing with coronavirus and led all scorers knocking down 19 points. Landen Cain added 12. For FCA, Kenna Smith drained 15 points and Holly Wall and Lainey Johnson added 6 and 5 respectively. Tome Seniors reflected on playing for the Titans:

Maggie Evans #31

Emmersen Peel #13

“Senior night is such a surreal moment. Since we have seen it for so long its finally us. It’s kind of like in the movies when the perspective changes and you realize this is what it actually is. For me hearing everyone cheer for us, having my friends here that ive grown up with, it couldn't of been more perfect. It’s exactly what I expected, which is the best thing to expect.”

“One of my favorite moments this year was when we were playing against Rising Sun and down at the half. Our coach gave us a talk telling us to get our act together and some plays to run and we came back and played with a lot more intensity and we ended up beating them by like 20 points. What I’ve learned this year was never give up, there’s always more effort you can give, there's always something you can do to contribute.”

“Growing up I’ve always wanted my senior night so it feels like it's all come full circle. I started playing in seventh grade and the seniors were always there for us so just being able to carry on that Tome tradition means a lot. Watching the younger girls play is rewarding and I’m honestly happier watching them play and grow.”

“ Tonight was really emotional. I thought i’d be fine and it would be like any other game but after everyone’s speeches it was kinda sad because it’s one of my last home games i’m ever going to play here. At least it was a good game, it was really special.”

Carliegh Johnson #4

“I definitely think Coach Palmer has helped me alot this year we;ve had about four different coaches throughout our basketball career starting in eighth grade. Having him made a huge difference, he definitely pushed me and he helped me become a better player, more confident in my shots even when it's not my best.”

Senior Captain, Jonas Scott describes, “County games are always a big deal and it was of course a great feeling to get the season sweep over North East. RISING SUN TIGERS END DUAL TOURNEY BID AT STEPHEN DECATUR The Rising Sun Tigers Wrestling Team traveled to Stephen Decatur High School in Berlin, MD on Wednesday for the Regional Semi-Finals and Regional Finals of Class 2A Maryland State Dual Wrestling Tournament. The Rising Sun Tigers looked great in competition showing a lot of promise for the individual tournament coming in a couple weeks but the Dual Tournament is about the entire team. As a team, the Tigers lacked enough wrestlers on their roster to be able to contest every weight class. The Tigers gave up 36 points in 6 forfeits making every other match a must win for the Tigers against a Stephen Decatur team with some excellent talent.

Tyler Garvin, Collin Bell, and Elijah Farr pinned their opponents giving the Tigers 6pts each and Jonathan Horne added 4pts after winning his match by major decision. This gave the Tigers 22 points and Stephen Decatur gained 19 points thru only 2 pins and 3 decisions. However the forfeits would seal the fate of the talented Tiger team giving 36 points to Stephen Decatur and making the final score 55-22 Stephen Decatur went on to the Regional Championship round where they defeated C. Milton Wright 53-16. The Tigers are now preparing for the MPSSAA Wrestling Regional Tournament and the shot at winning some State Championships.
