STATE INDOOR TRACK FINALS RETURN TO BALTIMORE ARMORY By Travon Morgan

Track and field student-athletes from all four corners of the state occupied the 5th Regiment Armory in Baltimore for the first time in over two years in hopes of solidifying themselves as one of the bests in some 13 different track, field, and relay events at the Maryland State Class 1A championship. Cecil County athletes from Bo Manor and Perryville were among them, as they represented in 24 of the 26 events contested. They left their mark. The Bo Manor girls’ squadron took the first shot at a medal. As the 4x800 relay battle kicked off, Colleen Nelsen, Paige Racine, Skylar Pizzulli, and Kathryn Scott (11:18.10) finished with

the highest place of all county relay teams by placing 3rd. In similar form, the Perryville foursome of Michael Young, Matt Grahe, Rowan Gatch, and Brady Martin finished with a season best time (9:49.04) to place 6th, while the Bo Manor group consisting of Evan Wakefield, Ethan Dell, Robert Henzelman, and Samuel Dickerson (10:10.40) finished in scoring position by placing 8th. A much anticipated showdown in the 1600m run between the 1A cross country state champion and Bo Manor’s potent duo of Day Leone and Samuel Dickerson did not disappoint. Leone (4:40.37) fought to the end and was narrowly edged out for the top spot, and teammate Dickerson (4:47.33) placed 4th, running a lifetime

best. Not to be outdone by the Bo Manor boys, Kathryn Scott (6:09.68) snagged a 4th place award. On the shorter end of track events, Perryville’s hurdlers represented well. Anna Rando (10.70) and Ty Stiffler (9.62) both navigated the five barriers to qualify for the finals where they placed 7th and 8th, respectively. The field events did damage to the scoring tables. Michael Young surprised his contenders by clearing 10 feet 6 inches in a lifetime best by over a foot! He finished 5th. Teammate Lily Heuisler (7 feet 6 inches) placed 4th. Heuisler and Scott (1600m), were the highest placing girls in individual events! Cameron Malone (36 feet 3.5 inches) placed 7th in the boys’ shot

put event. Back on the dusty armory oval, Leone had the opportunity in the 3200m run to avenge his earlier second place finish. When the dust settled, he was edged out in another solid performance by him (10:24.93). Skylar Pizzulli (13:20.55) was the top individual freshman by placing 5th in the 3200. Teaming up for the quicker relay events, county athletes placed in the top 8 in the state in both the girls’ and boys’ 4x200 relay. The Bo Manor girls, Colleen Nelsen, Paige Racine, Marlaina Ellis, and Brianna Poullard (2:01.54), placed 7th and the Perryville boys, Zach Ayers, Stiffler, Chase Freburger, and Grahe finished 8th (1:44.84). The Perryville girls, Rando, Hailey Myers,

Brooklyn Myers, and Hayden O’brien (4:52.45), closed out the relay portion of the meet by scoring with a 7th place finish. The final individual event, the 800m, saw both of Cecil’s athletes finish with lifetime bests: Bo Manor’s Maya Osbourne (7th-2:54.18) and Perryville’s Brady Martin (8th--2:19.71). Martin was the highest scoring individual freshman boy for Cecil athletes. Although the season was unconventional in many ways, some things remained the same. Cecil County track and field athletes stood toe to toe with the best of the best. The teams look forward to competing throughout the spring season. Look through the results for these other noteworthy performances.

RISING SUN JR WRESTLING

RISING SUN JR WRESTLERS SWEEP THE UCWL CHAMPIONSHIPS

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne

* The movie “The Godfather” does not contain the words “mafia” or “la cosa nostra” because of a deal struck between the producer and the mafia.

For the first time ever, the Rising Sun JR Wrestling Team has swept the UCWL Championships taking first in the elementary and middle school divisions. Coach Luke Garvin and his group of coaches have been training Cecil County’s next generation of wrestlers with several from this years middle school division about to

make the jump to High School Teams next year. Wrestling has a bright future in Cecil County with programs like Rising Sun Jr Wrestling. Congratulations to all the wrestlers who competed at the UCWL Championships and congratulations to the Coaches on your successful program.

* Limping became a fad in Victorian England when young women admired the genuine limp of Alexandra of Denmark, bride of the Prince of Wales, and went around fake limping (the “Alexandra Limp.”). CHAMPIONS

By Sam Dixon

The Tome School Lady Titans brought home the MIL Championship Trophy on Saturday after defeating County Rival Tri-State Christian Academy’s Lady Crusaders 50-23. The Lady Titans were led by the dynamic duo of Landen Cain and Emmersen Peel with Cain putting up 21 points and Peel adding 15pts. Alivia Carrillo scored 8pts in the game. The Lady Crusaders sturggled to contain the Titans as Tome jumped out to an early lead ending the frist quarter 11-6. Tri-State’s Jules Harris led the Crusaders in scoring with 13 pts, eight of those points from the free throw line. This is a tough rivalry in all sports so look for Tri-State and Tome to face off again in a Championship game before next year.

GOLDEN ELKS ELIMINATE NORTH EAST IN ROUND ONE OF PLAYOFFS By Kevin Phillips

ELKTON—Elkton and North East engaged in a tightly-contested defensive battle in the first round of the 2A East Region tournament Friday evening. The Golden Elks’ defense was completely suffocating as they held the Indians to just six total field goals and earned a 37-26 home victory. “We were hustling back. We were getting our hands up,” Elkton Milana Redden said. “We were communicating more on the cutters. It’s what we have been doing in practice, and it showed up in the game today.” The Golden Elks did not allow North East to score more than eight points and make two baskets in any quarter as they hassled any ball handler with pressure to force contested shots. Elkton held the Indians to one made basket in the first quarter as it took a 9-4 lead after eight minutes. North East opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run to take the lead at 11-9, but the Golden Elks responded with an 8-1 run to take the lead for good and enter halftime with a 17-12 lead. After Elkton and the Indians scored six points each in the third quarter to keep the difference at five points at 23-18 entering the final quarter, and the Golden Elks’ slowly pulled away in the fourth quarter to pick up the victory. Elkton head coach Gabriel Sherrod was pleased with his team’s defensive effort but felt disappointed that his team could not turn that defensive performance into points. “I’m really hard on them because I know there is

another level that they can get to. I’m just waiting for them to get there,” Sherrod said. “It’s frustrating to play so well on the defensive end like that and don’t get the rewards on the offensive end when they’re working so hard. It’s a tribute to them to stay focused like that the entire game and play the way they’re supposed to play.” With the win, the Golden Elks advance to the second round of the regional tournament where they will travel to Harford Tech to play the Cobras on March 1, and Sherrod knows Elkton needs to improve offensively if they want to continue to advance. “We lose and go home or win and advance. I really don’t think about the playoffs,” Sherrod said. “I’m sitting here still feeling kind of upset about this game because of the way we played on the offensive side of the floor. We’re not going to win next week if we don’t shoot the ball well.” The Golden Elks got a team-high eight points from Redden and Mikayla Jefferson while Akirah Watson added seven points. Saylor Bare scored six points to lead North East, who put up a strong effort but was doomed by poor shooting and turnovers. “We had the energy. Our defense was playing pretty solid. We had a couple of bad close outs on the three pointers,” Indian head coach Matt Haack said. “We weren’t getting the shots to drop. We turned the ball over a couple of times. Our effort and intensity tonight was exactly what we wanted. We challenged them to bring the intensity, and that’s exactly what they did.”

PERRYVILLE’S SENIOR CLASS PLAY THEIR FINAL GAME As a student you spend your entire Middle School and High School years counting down to that final day in June when you will get your diploma and no longer have to go to school. It’s all you think about. You plan for college and dream about what kind of car you will buy one day and the house you will have. You can’t wait for it. But then Senior Year happens and real-

ity starts to set in. You realize this is your final season on the basketball court with your friends you have played with since Elementary School. You will all go in seperate directions for awhile and even though you keep in touch it won’t be the same as these days when its you and your boys fighting Kent County High School in the Playoffs. With three months left until graduation and

one more season of sports remaining to be played... cherish the time and the moments. One day you will look back and think these were the days you wish you had enjoyed more and the friendships you wish you hadn’t let grow apart. You can still fix that. Thank you Perryville Class of 2022 for the years you played together and the bonds we made.

* On March 17, 1601, the first parade honoring the Catholic feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is held in what is now St. Augustine, Florida. The first St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City was held in 1762. * On March 20, 1823, Ned Buntline, the “dime millionaire” and discoverer of Buffalo Bill, is born. More than any single writer, Buntline was responsible for creating a romanticized and misleading image of the American West. He once said, “I found that to make a living I must write ‘trash’ for the masses.” * On March 18, 1852, in New York City, Henry Wells and William G. Fargo join with other investors to launch their namesake business. In July 1852, their company Wells Fargo shipped its first loads of freight from the East Coast to mining camps in northern California. * On March 15, 1901, paintings by the late Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh are shown in Paris, causing a sensation across the art world. Van Gogh had died by suicide, and in his lifetime he had sold only one painting. * On March 19, 1916, eight Curtiss “Jenny” planes of the First Aero Squadron take off from Columbus, New Mexico, in the first combat air mission in U.S. history. They flew in support of the 7,000 U.S. troops who invaded Mexico to capture revolutionary leader Pancho Villa. * On March 16, 1945, the west Pacific volcanic island of Iwo Jima is declared secured by the U.S. military after weeks of fierce fighting. More than 6,000 Marines died fighting for the island, along with almost all the 21,000 Japanese defenders * On March 14, 1950, the FBI institutes the “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list. SLAVENA MEDOVA WRESTLES AT 86TH ANNUAL NATIONAL PREP CHAMPIONSHIP It was not long ago that women in wrestling were considered an anomaly, but that has all changed significantly in the last two decades. When Greece hosted the Summer Olympics in 2004, Women took to the mats and competed for Olympic medals on the big stage for the first time. Since then, two American Women have won Gold Medals and several others have climbed the podium and captured world titles. Just as recently as 2018 only 6 states had Girl’s wrestling listed as a sanctioned High School sport. Today, that number has stretched to 32 and the number of college programs for Women has multiplied exponentially – including the recent announcement that storied University of Iowa will

be adding a Women’s team coming this Fall. In short, the sport is now one of the fastest growing activities for girls in the country and the investment in its continued growth is ever-expanding. So, what does all of this have to do with West Nottingham Academy? After announcing in July that the school would be restarting its wrestling program after a 13year hiatus, one of the first proposals that new Head of School, Dr. Sandy Wirth, approved for the long-term vision of this program was that Women’s Wrestling would be a priority. As soon as it was a plan Head Coach, Kacey Michelsen, set out to find girls on the campus at WNA who had never wrestled, and maybe had never imagined

doing so. By the time the Fall ended, and the mats were being rolled out for practice, the Coach had three girls committed to wrestling on the team and he immediately knew that the program could achieve great heights. This past weekend, those peaks were realized, and Coach Michelsen could not be prouder, “We only had two teammates who had ever stepped onto a wrestling mat prior to this season, and we ended the year at the 86th Annual National Prep Championship. I might have brought the team to watch anyway, but the entire reason why we got to go in support of a competitor in this first season back is because Slavena had enough courage to step up to the challenge of wres-

CALL:

tling against some of the best girls in the country on the largest stage. This is the third year that National Preps have included a Women’s Division and Slavena will forever be one of the pioneers of the sport at both WNA and in the entire country for girls wrestling at the highest level for Prep All-American status”. And All-American status is exactly what Slavena Medova, a Senior at WNA from Bulgaria, earned when she climbed the podium to receive her bronze medal this past Saturday afternoon. After months of training daily and wrestling against experienced opponents at matches and tournaments, after several bloody noses and at least one black eye, and after managing the strain of a wrestling

season that only those who have done it can appreciate what it takes to endure, Slavena helped WNA finish in the top 25 Private School Wrestling teams in the country. “We hope to build a full program of Women’s wrestlers here at WNA. I’d like to fill all 12 weight classes within the next few years and get a woman on my coaching staff as well. Slavena might not completely realize it yet, but what she represents, simply by being brave enough to show up, is a spark that we intend to grow into a flame here in Cecil County and this area at large. WNA is going to be a destination for girls that want to wrestle, and she is the pioneer of that program”.
