Wrestlers representing all five High Schools in Cecil County traveled to Upper Marlboro, MD this past weekend to compete in the 2022 MPSSAA 1A/2A State Wrestling Tournament. A total of 13 Wrestlers qualified for the State Tournament by placing top 2 in the Regional Tournament. Rising Sun High School sent three Regional Champions with #1 Ranked Sophomore Tyler Garvin (106lb), Sophomore Mason Testerman (170lb) and Freshman Elijah Farr (220lb). This would be the first time all three have had a chance to wrestle at the State Finals due to covid cancelling sports for most of last year. Garvin would claim his first MD State Champion Title after 4 matches which ended on Saturday night as the last match of the weekend. Tes-

terman would have his only loss in the Quarterfinals and go on to place third in the Tournament. Elkton High School had one wrestler to qualify for the State Finals as Brianna Pfau (105lb) competed in the Girls Division. The Girls Tournament Preliminaries and Consolation rounds started on Thursday. Brianna was unable to advance through Thursday’s matches and was eliminated from the Tournament. North East High School had the largest number of Cecil wrestlers qualified for the tournament with four. Mason Boyd (113lb) finished on the podium in sixth place and Senior Ethan Doctor (182lb) finished his Se-

nior Season with a fourth place finish. James Paylor (195lb) and Kameron Schank (160lb) did not place on the podium. Bohemia Manor High School sent two wrestlers to Upper Marlboro with Chase Rondone (126lb) and Noah Beck (152lb) being eliminated on Saturday morning and not placing on the podium. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne

* The shamrock, called the “seamroy” by the Celts, was considered a sacred plant that symbolized the arrival of spring. According to legend, St. Patrick used it as a visual guide when explaining the Holy Trinity. By the 17th century, it had become a symbol of emerging Irish nationalism. * There’s a doughnut shop in Clare, Michigan, that’s owned entirely by cops. * A long-haired tortoiseshell cat named Towser holds the Guinness World Record for catching mice -- an estimated 28,899 in 24 years -- as the pest control expert at the Glenturret whiskey distillery in Scotland. * Between 1912 and 1948, Olympic medals were given out for sporting-inspired masterpieces of architecture, music, painting, sculpture and literature. * Subaru WRX owners are the most likely in the U.S. to have a prior speeding citation. * The average energy expended during the ladies Wimbledon tennis final match adds up to 1.56kWh, which is enough power to keep an iPhone charged for a year. * Hackers were prevented from stealing nearly $1 billion after misspelling the word “foundation” as “fandation” on a payment transfer. However, they were still able to swipe roughly $80 million before their typo tipped off the banks. * Nineteen-year-old Shayla Wiggins, of Wyoming, found a man’s corpse in a river while she was playing Pokemon Go. * In 2014, South Korea produced an alternative version of their national anthem “Aegukga,” which was two keys lower in order to make it easier for kids in school, especially boys going through puberty, to sing. * When actor Dwayne Johnson was in high school, his height of 6-foot-4 and weight of 225 pounds had some of his classmates suspecting he was an undercover cop. BOHEMIA MANOR BATTLES HAVRE DE GRACE FOR REGIONAL TITLE By Kevin Phillips

HAVRE DE GRACE–Bohemia Manor took on a physical Havre de Grace squad in the 1A East, Section I regional final Thursday evening, looking to earn their second straight regional championship. Those hopes ended with a 45-40 loss for the Eagles as they struggled to keep possession against the host Warriors’ press for the majority of the game, committing several turnovers. “We were terrible with the basketball. This just wasn’t good. We were very poor with the basketball tonight,” Bohemia Manor head

coach Sean Lenz said. “Congrats to Havre de Grace. They played an aggressive style of defense. We were all over the place. We could not take care of the ball, whether it was inside, outside, upside down. We were poor.” The contest got off to a promising start for the Eagles as they jumped out to a 9-5 lead through the first six minutes of the first quarter, but the Warriors ratcheted up the pressure late in the frame. That pressure enabled Havre de Grace to go on an 11-0 run that carried over into the second quarter, giving it an 16-9 lead. Bo Manor went on a 5-0 mini-run

to cut its deficit to 16-14, but that was the closest it could get as the Warriors took a 25-20 lead into halftime. Havre de Grace pulled away in the third quarter, building a 39-25 lead before the Eagles’ Julia Walz made three free throws in the final seconds to make it 39-28 heading into the fourth quarter. Walz’s free-throws seemed to spark Bo Manor a bit as it started the final quarter on a 9-2 run to cut its deficit to 41-37 with 3:18 remaining in the game, and the surge was a result of the Eagles playing better defense and limiting turnovers. “We switched to

man. We were in the zone. They were killing us in the zone,” Lenz said. We got some run outs off of some turnovers for easy layups and made a couple of shots. We took care of the basketball for five minutes.” Bo Manor attempted to make a one-possession game down the stretch, but the shots did not fall in the final three minutes as the Warriors kept the Eagles at bay to hold on to the victory and advance to the state quarterfinals. Bo Manor’s season ends with the loss, but with most of the core returning next season, Lenz believes his team will bounce back

and contend for another regional championship. “We had a great season. We’re in the regional championship game. Yeah, I’m a little perturbed right now, and it’s going to take a day or two for me to get my blood pressure down,” Lenz said. We’re bringing back all but two. We’re heavy juniors. We won the regional championship two years ago. It didn’t go our way tonight, but we’ll be back. I don’t know if we get back to this game, but we’re bringing our core for their senior season. Not having a year off, hopefully we can gel and get back to how we played most of the season minus tonight.”
