STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne

* Now, here’s a good reason not to neglect checking your spam email folder from time to time: A Michigan woman bought a lottery ticket online but forgot about it until, opening said folder days later in search of a missing message, discovered that she’d won $3 million. * In 1985, a sting operation dubbed Operation Flagship mailed letters offering free tickets for Washington Redskins games to fugitive criminals. More than 100 arrests resulted, including two of America’s top 10 most wanted. * Domino’s Pizza Group has its own registered Tartan in its brand hues of red, white and blue. * In 2007, Ben Carpenter got the most terrifying ride of his life when his wheelchair’s handles were caught in the grill of a semi-trailer. Carpenter was pushed for several miles at a speed of over 60 mph before a pair of police officers followed the truck to its place of business and informed the stunned driver. The chair’s wheels had to be replaced, but Ben survived without injury. * FedEx’s founder nearly bankrupted his company with a Las Vegas trip, in which he used the corporation’s last $5,000 to play blackjack. Fortunately, he managed to turn the sum into $27,000 and keep things running until he obtained more funding. * The movie “Babe” required one animatronic and 48 real pigs, due to their rapid growth rate. * Remember playing “Simon Says” in your youth? BARBIN BESTS FIELD IN TOUGH CONDITIONS, WALLACE THIRD IN PHILLY JUNIOR TOUR EVENT

By Andrew Barbin

While the calendar says it’s spring, it certainly did not feel that way on Sunday, where Chesapeake Bay Golf Club hosted its annual stop with the Philadelphia Junior Tour. It was a grind all day with extremely chilly, windy, and wet conditions, but Cecil County’s golf talent still took care of business. This event marked the first time reigning Delaware Boys State Champion Evan Barbin and reigning Maryland Boys 1A/2A State Champion Noah Wallace have competed in the same event since the 2020 Chesapeake Bay Golf Club Junior Club Championship, where Barbin set the Chesapeake Bay Golf Club course record with a 9-under 62. This was also both Cecil County standouts’ first tournament of their 2022 season, and despite a rough outing, Barbin and Wallace continued to finish at the top of the leaderboard. Despite shooting his worst competitive score in two years, Elk Neck resident Evan Barbin managed to win by two strokes over New Jer-

sey’s Joseph Fargnoli. The Red Lion Christian Academy senior and Liberty University commit was also three shots clear of North East’s Noah Wallace, who tied with Blue Bell’s Kevin Lafond for bronze medal honors. This performance was also one of Wallace’s worst scores in recent memory as well. Look for both golfers to continue to shake off the rust and continue their dominance over the local circuit for the rest of the year! Karina Serio also took first place in the girls’ 16-18 division, notching yet another win under the Tome sophomore’s belt on the local circuit. Other notable Cecil County golfers competing were Chesapeake Bay GC member Zack Sullivan, as well as Bo Manor sophomore Braden Paris. Both golfers took home very respectable top 10 finishes in their Philly Junior Tour debuts.

Celebrate Athletics' HOF Class of 2020 Induction was delayed two years due to the pandemic

NORTH EAST, Md. – Cecil College will hold its Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday, April 23, with seven of its icons recognized. The Class of 2020 includes pioneers who all had a hand in the Cecil athletic programs’ creation, development, and growth. These individuals will be honored as the Class of 2020 as the ceremony was originally planned for two weeks after the pandemic lockdown. The Hall of Fame committee, made up of alumni, current coaches, and staff, will bestow honors upon Paul Bauer, Debra (Bowers) Fitzgerald, Barbara (Howell) Monger, Rashad Brooks, Dwayne “DJ” Wootson, Michael McCardell, and Wayne Franklin, at the ceremony honoring the Class of 2020. The induction ceremony will be held in the Physical Education Complex on the North East Campus. Also being honored that evening is Baseball Coach Charles “Charlie” O’Brien for his induction into the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame! The purpose of the Cecil College Athletics Hall of Fame is to honor individ-

uals who, through participation, support or interest, have made outstanding contributions or brought recognition to the athletic programs of Cecil College. Members of the public and campus community are asked to join Cecil College Athletics in celebrating these individuals. The accolades of this year’s class include:

A professor of philosophy and social sciences, Paul Bauer’s devotion to the success of student-athletes during his career at Cecil College was second to none. His belief in the impact of athletics on a student’s success in the classroom and life was evident when he established the Ted and Mary Bauer Softball Scholarship in

memory of his parents. His influence reached beyond Cecil College as he taught each student-athlete inducted this year.

Debra Fitzgerald was a foursport athlete at then Cecil Community College from 1978-1980, earning an Associate of Arts in Business Management. She competed in the volleyball, basketball, bowling, and softball programs, earning Most Valuable Player honors both years on the softball diamond and at the net for the volleyball team in 1979, along with Athlete of the Year in 1980. Upon graduation, she continued her career with the Seahawks as a volleyball and softball programs coach. She went on to coach volleyball at Goldey Beacom College in Delaware.

A native of North East, Md., Barbara Monger was a three-sport athlete at then Cecil Community College, having turned down a scholarship to American University to remain close to home. During the 1978 and 1979 seasons, she competed in the women’s basketball program, softball squad, and volleyball team. Monger received multiple post-season honors, including All-NJCAA Second Team in volleyball, All-Region XX Second Team twice for basketball, and All-Region XX Second Team twice for softball. She currently lives in Rising Sun, having had a 37-year career with the Department of the Army at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. Rashad Brooks was a standout on the men’s basketball team from 1996-1999, having red-shirted one season. He was a 1,000 point scorer for the Seahawks while averaging 17.5 points per game, 4.9 rebounds, and 5.9 assists over 61 games. In the post-season, he was honored with First Team

also selected to the NJCAA All-American team, highlighting his being named Cecil College Outstanding Male Athlete. He was drafted in the tenth round and went on to be signed as a free agent by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1981.

All-Maryland JUCO, All-Region XX, and Third Team All-American. He returned to Cecil College in 2009 to coach the Seahawks for three seasons, accumulating a 79-18 record and guiding Cecil to a sixth-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament.

Dwayne “DJ” Wootson was the iron man for the Seahawks during the mid-90s and became the all-time leading scorer at Cecil College. Scoring 1,519 points in 62 games over two seasons, Wootson averaged 24.5 points along with 5.3 assists and 3.5 rebounds. In the 1998-1999 season, he was named First Team All-Maryland JUCO, Second Team All-Region XX, and All-Tournament Team at the NJCAA National Tournament.

Michael McCardell was a standout in the Seahawks’ baseball program, drafted by the Cincinnati Reds organization. During his freshman season at Cecil, he earned All-Maryland JUCO honors and was named to the All-Region XX team. The following season, he was again honored as one of the top players in Maryland JUCO and Region XX. He was

Wayne Franklin is a North East High School graduate who played for Cecil College before competing at the University of Maryland at Baltimore County. The Los Angeles Dodgers drafted Franklin in the 36th round of the 1996 amateur draft. His Major League debut was July 24, 2000, with the Houston Astros, and he played for five teams over six years. His MLB record was 11-16 with a 5.54 ERA.

Charles “Charlie” O’Brien’s presence throughout the tristate region goes far beyond the chalk lines on the baseball field. With more than 20 years of NJCAA coaching experience, O’Brien has made a difference in the lives of hundreds of students through support long after they have left Cecil College. At Keystone College in northern Pennsylvania, his teams won 136 games before returning to Cecil County in 1995. Under his guidance, the Seahawks have accumulated 586 victories, earning him the Maryland Junior College Conference Baseball Coach of the Year award three times. He was also a three-time recipient of the NJCAA Region XX Coach of the Year and the 2011 NJCAA Northeast District Coach of the Year.

Under$tandingCredit By: Alexis McKinney, 13 year banker

Many of you are smack dab in the middle of making a huge life decision; What do I do with my life after High School? I remember that feeling like it was yesterday! Many of you will be going to college, joining the workforce or possibly even joining our nation’s military. All these things, and everything in between, are honorable and exciting prospects. One thing I wish I would have understood better while I was transitioning from full time student to full time “adulting” was CREDIT. What is credit? How do I use it? What is good credit? Well, the best way to understand credit is to start with the basics; Character, Capacity, Capital, Condition and Collateral.

Character: This is a borrower’s willingness to payback borrowed money. This is determined mainly by reviewing a person’s payment history and their overall credit score. Check out the image below to see what the ranges of credit scores look like.

Capacity: This would be someone’s ability to meet all their current financial obligations

plus the obligation of any loan payment they would be applying for. This is when a lender looks at Debt To Income (DTI). DTI is calculated by taking Monthly Payments / Monthly Income. For example, someone has $2500 in monthly take home income with $1025 in monthly expenses. The equation would look like this; $1025 / $2500 = 0.41 or a 41% DTI Ratio.

Capital: Also known as cash on hand and ready to be used. This could be the total amount of money you have in bank accounts and can prove by providing bank statements.

Condition: This is when a lender needs to take any economic factors into consideration

(positive or negative). Lenders like to understand the purpose of the loan to ensure it make sense with the amount, term and type of collateral proposed for the loan. Speaking of collateral…

Collateral: This is when property or goods such as a car or even cash is put up to secure the loan request and help mitigate risk to the lender. However, the borrower needs to understand that if they fail to repay the loan, the collateral (or asset) will be taken or forfeited to the lender to repay the debt. When looking at collateral, some lenders will only lend up to a certain percentage of the assets value. For example; you want to buy a car. The car is worth $10,000 and the lender will only finance up to 80% of the value. The equation looks like this; $10,000 x 0.80 = $8,000. The lender will only finance $8,000 and you would have to have a down payment of $2,000 in order to purchase that $10,000 car. I hope this has given you a good start in understanding credit. I wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavors!

Khalid Gates NJCAA Division II First Team All-American

NORTH EAST, Md. – On the heels of an exceptional season that saw the Cecil College men’s basketball team qualify for the NJCAA National Tournament for the second time in three years, the accolades for Khalid Gates continue to highlight his career with the Seahawks. Gates was recognized once again this week when he was named First Team All-American for NJCAA Division II men’s basketball. “Being selected as NJCAA First Team All-American is a blessing. It means

a lot to me to be recognized as a top player. This was one of the goals I had set on my agenda in the beginning of the season, and I achieved it,” said Gates. Gates is a six-footfive sophomore forward from Washington Academy in the nation’s capital. He was the leading scorer for the Seahawks with 15.6 points per game average. “Khalid is deserving of being named First Team All-American. He was the best player in our Region as recognized by our member

coaches. His performance at the National Tournament solidified his status as one of the best players in NJCAA Division II. I am so happy for him. He has contributed so much to our program, and I look forward to seeing where his next chapter takes him,” said Cecil College head coach Ed Durham. The Seahawks finished the 2021-2022 season with a 27-4 record after winning the Region 20 championship before going on to the national tournament in Danville, Ill. Gates was a member

of both teams that qualified for the national tournament, with the Seahawks placing third in the nation during the 2018-2019 season. The 2020-2021 season was canceled due to the pandemic. Gates, a general studies major, was also named All-Region 20 First Team as he averaged 7.8 rebounds per game along with his scoring average. Gates scored double-digits in 21 games and recorded double-doubles in points and rebounds in nine games this season. He tal-

lied a career-high 31 points against No. 3 Sullivan County Community College in the quarterfinal round of the national tournament and a career-high 19 rebounds against Garrett College on December 15. He was also named Maryland JUCO and NJCAA Region 20 Division II Player of the Month in January for his outstanding performance. Gates finished his career as a Seahawk with 671 career points, 452 of them coming from the 2021-2022 season. PHOTOS BY SCOTT SERIO
