BASEBALL: TRI-STATE vs TOME
pair with a double to make it 2-0, and they added to their lead in the bottom of the second when they scored five times with Brayden Jones providing the biggest hit with a two-run single that made it 7–0.
Tri-State increased its lead to 9-0 with a pair of runs in the third inning with the runs coming on a Will Davis single and a Gary Slagle bases loaded walk that forced in a run, and the offensive explosion was a bounce back after a sluggish offensive output in the Crusaders’ previous game.
“We all came out ready to hit because last game we all were in a slump, so our coach told us to go out there and play hard,” Davis, who drove in three runs, said.
“We just wanted to get a hit and not strike out.”
After Tome got a run back in the top of the fourth, TriState exploded for seven runs in the bottom half of the frame to increase its lead to 16-1 with Kenny Koehler and Davis each knocking in a pair with line drive singles. Yates, who drove in the sixth run of the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly, said the Crusaders used a disciplined approach and took
what the Titans pitchers gave them.
“We were swinging at pitches we could handle and not chasing pitches out of the zone,” Luke Yates, who drove in three runs, said. “Once we got guys on from walks, we just drove them in.”
Tome had a big inning of its own in the top of the fifth with seven runs to keep their hopes alive, cutting its deficit to 16-8.
Tri-State clinched victory in the bottom of the sixth when it plated three runs, securing victory when Drew Eichman drove in a pair with a single to make it 19-8.
MOMENTS IN TIME
The History Channel
* On April 28, 1789, the HMS Bounty was taken over in a mutiny led by master’s mate Fletcher Christian. Captain William Bligh and 18 of his faithful supporters were set adrift in a small boat but managed to navigate a journey of 4,000 miles over 42 days to safety without a single loss of life.
* On April 25, 1792, French highwayman Nicholas Jacques Pelletier became the first person to be executed by guillotine after stealing a man’s wallet and killing him. The anticipated large crowd that witnessed his death was dissatisfied with the process, feeling it was too swift, even calling out, “Bring back our wood gallows!”
* On April 24, 1895, merchant captain Joshua Slocum, the first person to solo circumnavigate the globe, began his groundbreaking voyage out of Boston on the sloop Spray. His return to the States three years later went almost unnoticed, due to the earlier outbreak of the Spanish-American War, but the trip was immortalized in his 1900 book “Sailing Alone Around the World.”
* On April 30, 1927, Hollywood couple Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford were the first celebrities to officially leave their handprints and footprints in concrete at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood.
* On April 29, 1945, the U.S. Seventh Army’s 45th Infantry Division liberated the Dachau concentration camp. Some of the soldiers were so horrified by conditions there that they gunned down at least two groups of captured German guards.
* On April 27, 1992, Baroness Betty Boothroyd became the first woman to be elected Speaker of the British House of Commons in its 700-year history. At the time, there were just 60 women in the 651-member House. A former professional dancer, she earned a reputation for fairness and impartiality over the course of her career, even issuing reprimands “with good humor and charm.”
* On April 26, 2010, “Boobquake,” a rally inspired by blogger Jennifer McCreight that aimed to protest news reports of controversial beliefs blaming “immodestly dressed” women for causing earthquakes, took place with an estimated 200,000 people participating worldwide.

Dinner and a Show? Try a Show and a CRUISE!
Last November, I sailed on the Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) Breakaway on a cruise to Canada and New England. In addition to visiting the ports, I was very excited to see the Broadway show, Six. However, I did not see this in New York City before the cruise, I saw it onboard the ship included with our cruise fare. Dinner and a show in Manhattan can be quite pricey, so let’s see how it compares to a week-long cruise.
For comparison, I will include tickets for Six, dinner at a French bistro, and overnight accommodations. Premium tickets for Six are $847.20 for two patrons; I chose premium since I had seats very close to the stage for the show. Dinner for two at a French bistro totaled $266.40 with tip. I selected a French bistro since a meal at Le Bistro would also be included in the cruise fare. I selected escargot, filet mignon and ile flotantte for dessert. All three menu items are available at both restaurants. I also included one glass of wine in the restaurant price. For the hotel, one night at the Marriott Marquis Time Square is $599. The grand total is $1712.60 for the trip to New York City.
Now, let’s compare a week cruise on the NCL Breakaway. Meals are included all seven days with one night of specialty dining, which includes Le Bistro, the signature French restaurant of Norwegian Cruise Line. The premium beverage package, which includes unlimited alcoholic beverages $15 dollars and under, is also part of the cost. Also Included in the price are tickets to see Six and Burn the Floor, another Broadway show. Plenty of other entertainment is available at no charge, such as game shows, live music and karaoke. A shore excursion discount and internet minutes are also part of the package price. As of writing this article, the cruise fare starts at $2294.94 for two guests. The difference between the two is only $582.34 which is not bad for six more nights of accommodations, food, beverages, and entertainment. Instead of just seeing New York City, you would also visit Newport, Portland, Bar Harbor, Saint John, and Halifax.
In addition to Six and Burn the Floor, a variety of Broadway shows are on other NCL ships, including Footloose, Jersey Boys, and Summer: The Donna Summer Musical. Next year, Beetlejuice: The Musical will be on the newest ship, Viva. Each ship has unique features and itineraries, and it can be a challenge to find the ideal fit. I am always available to help you navigate all the options to make sure your next vacation is a perfect fit for you.

DIVAS ON A DIME:
By Patti DiamondFrom Meatloaf to Burgers to Meatballs: One Recipe, Endless Possibilities
There are few foods more comforting than good old-fashioned meatloaf. I’m always surprised how much my family loves this humble dish, especially the kiddies. Who knew happiness could come in such an unassuming little package?
There are several delicious reasons to make this recipe. It’s moist and tender, packed with flavor and sneaks in a serving of veggies. (Shhh, don’t tell the kiddies!) It really stretches a buck, and this same recipe makes burgers and meatballs, too. Leftovers make the most amazing grilled meatloaf sandwiches, ever. Oh! Stretchy Beef and Veggie Meatloaf, where have you been all my life?
Here are some tips for meatloaf lovers. Substitute Parmesan cheese for breadcrumbs for gluten free meatloaf. Don’t overmix, because that makes meatloaf dense, dry and tough. Since shapes of meatloaf vary widely, cooking times will vary as well, but a rule of thumb is 35 minutes per pound of meatloaf. Mini meatloaves made in a muffin tin take 20 to 30 minutes total.
This recipe makes six generous portions, but I always make a double batch. There’s never a crumb gone to waste. Serve with mashed potatoes, peas and carrots to make your own Blue Plate Special.
STRETCHY BEEF AND VEGGIE MEAT-
LOAF
1 tablespoon butter or oil
2 carrots, shredded
2 stalks celery, finely minced
1 medium sweet onion, minced
2 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
3/4 cup breadcrumbs
2 pounds 85% lean ground beef
2 eggs
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt and several grinds of pepper For the glaze:
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup mustard
Place the mixture into the loaf pan or shape into a loaf in the baking pan. In a small bowl, combine glaze ingredients. Brush meatloaf with half the glaze.
Bake for 55 minutes. Remove meatloaf from the oven and spread with remaining glaze (because it’s all about the glaze). Return to the oven for 15 more minutes. Test for doneness; your meat thermometer should read 160 F. Let meatloaf rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
For Burgers: Shape the meatloaf mixture into burger patties and barbecue, panfry or broil. Top with a slice of cheese and let that melt. Then pop it on a bun with the usual accompaniments. You’ve got yourself a scrumptious little burger.
For Meatballs: Roll heaping tablespoons of the meatloaf mix into meatballs. Place on a baking sheet and bake at 350 F for 30 minutes or until a meat thermometer reads 155
F. Serve with pasta or make meatball subs. These also make a great snack or appetizer.
STRANGE BUT TRUE
By Lucie Winborne* An anonymous Middle Eastern prince donated $500,000 for Hurricane Sandy relief in exchange for a 15-minute meeting with actress Kristen Stewart.
* The creators of Dragon’s Lair used Playboy magazines to create the princess.
* After more than six decades of separation, differences in the language have developed between South and North Korea. This leads to hardship for North Korean defectors after they escape, because they have to relearn their language.
Preheat oven to 350 F. Lightly grease a 5-x-9-inch loaf pan or 9-x-13-inch baking pan.
In a skillet on medium-high heat, saute the onion, carrot and celery in butter or oil until the onion is soft. Season liberally with salt and pepper. Add the garlic and stir it all around until it’s softened and smells divine. Place the veggies in a large mixing bowl and let them cool for a minute. To the veggies, add breadcrumbs, beef, eggs, Worcestershire, salt and pepper. Use your (very clean) hands to gently mush it all together.
Want to know why I always make a double batch? Because I need leftovers to make irresistible grilled cheesy meatloaf sandwiches. Put a schmear of ketchup on the bottom slice of bread, top with meatloaf and cheese slices and the second slice of bread. Spread butter on the outside of both pieces of bread. Heat a skillet and cook the sandwich on both sides until golden brown and delicious. Bon appetit!
