RAIN BRIEFLY INTERRUPTS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS RACES RESUME BUT NOT BEFORE AN UNO CHAMP IS CROWNED Written by Amanda Callaghan

On Thursday, April 14th, all Cecil County track teams gathered at Bo Manor High School for the Cecil County Track Championships. The heat was up, both figuratively and literally. The stress was high to compete well against the county’s best, defend last year’s titles, and earn points for teams. The temperature itself was toasty; the heat reached a high of 82 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the hottest track meet yet of the season (with hotter meets to come as we enter May). On the Girls’ side of the meet, Rising Sun

defended their 2021 Cecil County Championships title by winning first place again with a whopping 158 points, a 76-point difference between them and second place. On the Boys’ side of the meet, Bo Manor clinched the title with 122 points, a 26-point difference between them and second place. Both teams started the meet off strong by winning the 4x800. Rising Sun’s girl’s 4x800 of Anna Callaghan, Eve Poteet, Alyssa McCall, and Katie Callaghan ran a 10:59.47. The Bo Manor boys’ 4x800 of John Conley, Ethan Dell, Noah Beck, and Casin Brown ran a 9:29.45 to win the race. However, it wasn’t long before the meet hit a

significant speed bump. The heat of the day had formed into a thunderstorm, forcing teams to pack their things and move into the Bo Manor lunchroom. All teams huddled in the cafeteria, wondering when they’d be able to run again. Determined to take advantage of the situation, runners from all high schools formed an all-county Uno competition. Organized by Rising Sun, if the Cecil County Track Championships had to be postponed, at least there would be a Cecil County Uno Championship to make up for it. In a great show of sportsmanship, members of all teams gathered to watch and cheer on the Uno game, containing one player from each of the five high school teams. The game was certainly a sight to behold, and all those watching and playing had a blast. Luckily, the rain delay did not last long and the meet was back on in around

an hour. The storm had zapped the heat out of the air but instead left high winds. Still, runners were thankful for the break from the heat. Resuming competition, all athletes performed spectacularly, setting PRs and earning points for teams. There were many impressive “sweeps” of competition at the meet. Bo Manor’s boys’ team swept the 1600 with Samuel Dickerson earning first (4:56.99), Day Leone earning second (4:59.84), and Evan Wakefield earning third (5:01.28). Boy Manor’s boys’ team swept the 3200, with Day Leone earning first (11:28.66), Samuel Dickerson earning second (11:29.47), and John Conley earning third (11:33.19). Bo Manor Boys also swept the 800: Day Leone won first (2:08.43), Samuel Dickerson won second (2:10.08), and Noah Beck won third (2:11.87). On the girl’s side of the meet, Elkton swept the

There were also school records broken at the meet! In girl’s Discus, Caroline Mercer of Rising Sun broke her own school record, throwing 110 ft 5 inches into second place! especially impressive as both are only sophomores. There are many seasons of tight Discus competition to come! In the end, the meet was a stunning success. Commenting on her girl’s team’s performance, Rising Sun Coach Jill McKay said “There are many, many things that make me proud of this team. It’s not the performance as much as the dedication and perseverance week after week. As proud as I am for their success in athletics, I’m even more proud of how they are maturing into amazing humans. From being willing to compete in events out of their comfort zone to encouraging and congratulating others from our team and other teams; from starting a County-wide Uno game during the rain delay, to helping clean

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne

* Queen Elizabeth II is the only person in all of Britain allowed to legally drive without a license. * Charles Darwin once conducted a study to discover whether more people with brown hair existed because they were more dependable and likely to settle down and get married. The results were inconclusive. * In Australia, Speedos are called “Budgy Smugglers.” * In the 1940s during World War II, interest in continental knitting, or knitting with the yarn in one’s left hand, decreased because of its origins in Germany, while English knitting, or knitting with the yarn in the right hand, gained popularity. * Many of us will not be surprised to learn that approximately five months of a person’s life is spent waiting in a car at red lights. * Looking to retire at age 65? You might want to reconsider, as scientists have noted that employees should keep working until they turn 80, but the good news is that for optimal productivity, they should also only work 25 hours a week. * The Imperial Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan denounced the Beatles as atheistic, and Klan members picketed the band’s concerts during their 1966 U.S. tour. * 7UP was originally called “Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda” and, until 1948, contained the mood-stabilizing drug lithium citrate. One theory claims its abbreviated moniker originated from its seven ingredients -- sugar, carbonated water, essence of lemon and lime oils, citric acid, sodium citrate and lithium citrate, with “UP” referring to the lithium-induced mood lift. * Speaking of product name changes, L’Oreal was founded as the French Harmless Hair Dye Company. * A 1991 study revealed that female politicians who employed Hollywood makeup artists were 30% more likely to win their elections. up and put everything away after meets without being asked - the good human skills are what I am most proud of with this team.” McKay also noted “The greatest assets of our team are our student leaders. They set the expectations high and encourage every member of the team to do his or her best on a regular basis. Track & Field is unlike many sports in the fact that when it is your turn to compete- there is nowhere to hide. Regardless of what place an athlete finishes, everyone knows the work it takes to accomplish a PR or SR, and our leaders do a great job of modeling encouragement, consistency and dedication. Whether a captain, a senior, or a team member - everyone on the team has opportunities to be a leader and an encourager. Rising to that challenge is the

greatest asset to our team.” Coach Stephen Pizzulli of Bo Manor commented on his boy’s team’s success, saying “For our coaching staff, it is very meaningful to have had so many kids being willing to buy in and do what is necessary so that they are in a position to win a county title. Every county title is a testament to the athletes and their hard work and should be enjoyed when it comes around.” Congratulations to all of the athletes at the meet! Tight competition is ahead as Cecil teams prepare for UCBAC Divisionals, with Bo Manor, North East, and Rising Sun to compete in the Susquehanna Division, and Perryville and Elkton to compete in the Chesapeake Division. Best of luck to the athletes at upcoming meets!

Senior James Able was on the hill for Perryville. Able surrendered one run on four hits over six innings, striking out five. Brandon Uhde was on the pitcher’s mound for Rising Sun Tigers. The righty surrendered two runs on seven hits over seven innings, striking out four and walking one. Sean Seibel led Ris-

5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “Look at us baby, up all night, Tearing our love apart, Aren’t we the same two people, Who lived through years in the dark?” Answers 1. Just one: “Runaway Boys,” in 1980 ... in Finland. The song, from their debut album, also did well in Belgium and the U.K., but not the U.S. 2. The R&B group Champaign, in 1981, off their debut album. The song charted around the world and reached No. 1 in the U.S. on the Adult Contemporary chart. 3. “The baddest man in the whole downtown” was from the south side of Chicago. Songwriter Jim Croce wrote the song about a soldier he met in the Army who went AWOL but was arrested when he came back to pick up his paycheck. 4. Bobby Darin, in 1958. 5. “I Can’t Tell You Why,” by the Eagles in 1980. The rock ballad went to the Top 10 on multiple charts and was the first Eagles’ song to feature bass guitarist Timothy B. Schmit on lead vocals. (c) 2022 King Features Syndicate

NORTH EAST - C a d e n c e Williams didn't allow a single run as the Rising Sun Lady Tigers defeated the North East Indians 5-0 on Monday. Williams allowed just one hit. Rising Sun notched four runs in the fifth inning. The rally was led by singles by Josalyn McMillan and Jayden Simpkins and a triple by Jordan Lynch. A single by Kalila Pace in the sixth inning was the only hit the Indians could get on Williams. Williams was on the

rubber for Rising Sun going seven innings, allowing zero runs on one hit, striking out 11 and walking one. Alesia Doctor was in the circle for the Indians. The righty went seven innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, striking out three and walking zero. Rising Sun racked up eight hits with Simpkins and McMillan each getting two hits to lead the Lady Tigers. Rising Sun didn't commit a single error in the field. Bri Cole had the most chanc-

es in the field with seven. Pace went 1-for-2 at the plate to lead the Indians in hits. The Tigers and Indians have now played twice this season with Rising Sun taking both contests. They do not meet again in the regular season but we predict a Regional Playoff Game might be in their future.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

* On May 7, 1824, Ludwig van Beethoven’s ninth and final symphony debuts at Vienna’s Theater am Karntnertor. Having lost his hearing years earlier, the celebrated composer nonetheless appeared to conduct the first performance of his Ninth Symphony, while the real conductor stood in the wings. Beethoven was several bars off the actual music by the time the piece concluded. * On May 5, 1904, Cy Young pitches the first perfect game in modern Major League Baseball history as the Boston Americans defeat the Philadelphia Athletics, 3-0. Young’s perfect game was part of his then-record 45-inning scoreless streak. * On May 4, 1916, Germany responds to a demand by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson by agreeing to limit its submarine warfare. However, on Feb. 1, 1917, Germany announced the resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare, and the United States formally entered World War I. * On May 8, 1933, the first police radio system, connecting headquarters to patrol cars and patrol cars to one another, is installed in Eastchester Township, New York. The system consisted of one transmitter of 20 watts for the headquarters and two transmitters of 4.5 volts each for the two patrol cars. * On May 3, 1952, a ski-modified U.S. Air Force C-47 becomes the first aircraft to land on the North Pole. Aboard the flight was Dr. Albert P. Crary, an American scientist who in 1961 traveled to the South Pole by motorized vehicle, becoming the first person in history to have stood on both poles. * On May 2, 1972, Steven Spielberg begins filming “Jaws.” The production, which used three mechanical sharks, enthralled audiences and grossed $458 million in its theatrical release. * On May 6, 1991, 51-yearold race car driver Harry Gant betters his own record as the oldest man ever to win a NASCAR event in the Winston 500 in Talladega, Alabama.
