Drug Free Cecil Youth Coalition collects 750 signatures during Cecil County Fair for Plant Your Promise Pledge

ELKTON - This year’s Cecil County Fair had a little bit of everything! Tractor pulls, demolition derbies, pretty baby contests, concerts, rides, food and even a Call to Action from the Drug Free Cecil Youth Coalition. High school students worked under a tent and throughout the fairgrounds encouraging county residents to sign the “Plant Your Promise”

pledge. The pledge is for residents willing to commit to live one-year illegal substance free. Youth explained that if you are under 21 this includes alcohol and tobacco, but if you are over 21 it does not. Over the course of 5 days more than 750 signatures were collected. In September the community is invited to join the youth to plant a grove

of trees at Calvert Regional Park, in honor of the community members who signed the pledge. Youth Empowerment Source, the parent company of Drug Free Cecil Youth Coalition, is partnering with Cecil County Parks and Rec for this project. Last year’s trees were planted at Brantwood Regional Park, this year Calvert and for the next 3 years at oth-

er county parks. Since there are 5 high schools a planting will take place in each high school community. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 17th at 10:30 am. began with a 9-6 triumph over UMASS. The semifinal round brought current Champion University of North Carolina, and while the future Mids got out to a 3-1 lead, the UNC depth gave them the edge in the end wit a 6-5 win. The grit and hustle of the Navy girls did not go unnoticed and they were the talk of the tournament with several other squads cheering them on. Navy was unique in they only had 10 commited players available, all from the 2023 class, due to the 2022 class already being in Annapolis for Plebe Summer to being their training. So with two guest players helping them out, giving them one substitute for the weekend, they posted an impressive 4-1 record

against teams that fielded between 17-20 players and most being a grade above. In all it was a great experience meeting future teammates and rivals and a fantastic way to measure up to the top players and teams in the country.

Whatever It Takes.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

The story of Perryville Junior Jordan Rice and his journey starting rehab after a swimming accident this summer. By Jessica Rice On June 22nd it was a normal summer day for Jordan, Nathan and Jake. They decided they wanted to go swim at Jake’s house like they usually would. Boys being boys, they were goofing off throwing each other in and Jordan took a dive, thinking he would clear the shallow end of the swimming pool, and unfortunately did not. Jordan immediately floated to the top, face down, body limp, taking in water with no way of getting his brother or best friend’s attention. Thankfully, Nathan and Jake acted fast and jumped in, preparing for Jordan to be playing a prank on them, realizing he was not. The boys called 911 immediately after swimming Jordan to the side of the pool. Jordan and his mother were

flown to shock trauma from Perryville High School in a matter of minutes. After many scans, it was determined that Jordan crushed his C5 vertebrae breaking his neck leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. He was almost immediately rushed into his first surgery to remove debris from the injury to prevent additional damage to his spinal cord that lasted about 4 hours. His second surgery was the following morning to stabilize his spine from C2 to T2. Two days after that surgery, Jordan was told that with his injury and the area of his injury, he would likely have problems breathing while regaining his strength and that they recommended him having a tracheostomy. In the following week's, Jordan proved every doctor, neurosurgeon, nurse and

therapist wrong. They told him it would be weeks to come off the ventilator, he did it in 14 days! The feeding tube was then removed within days of being off the ventilator, he was able to eat and drink a regular diet with no restrictions and only 34 days after his accident, the trachea was removed. Jordan was able to eat, drink, and breathe on his own. Jordan has been in rehabilitation since July 19th, trying to regain any and all strength and mobility he can in his arms. He has little to no movement in his hands still but we are hopeful with more work from his therapists he will one day be able to use them again. Jordan and his family are learning everyday how to live this new lifestyle with lots of training. The community has been holding fundraisers to help

Scholarship honors fallen first responder

NORTH EAST, Md. – In the wake of the tragic death of a young man whose life was dedicated to helping others, family and friends have come together to establish an enduring tribute to the spirit of his life. Trevor Garrison McNabb passed unexpectedly at 22 following his shift as an Emergency Medical Technician with the Singerly Fire Company in Elkton earlier this year. In his honor, the Trevor McNabb Memorial Scholarship has been established at Cecil College, which will help fund the training of paramedics and emergency medical responders. McNabb was a graduate of the paramedic training program at Cecil College. “Trevor was passionate and dedicated to service for others providing an infectious spirit of hope and inspiration to all

those that met him in both his personal and professional lives,” said Robert F. Muller, Program Director of the Cecil College Paramedic Program. A native of Newark, Del., McNabb devoted his life to serving others from an early age. Upon joining the Christiana Fire Company in 2015, he immersed himself in the world of Emergency Services, obtaining certifications from The Delaware State Fire School while becoming an Emergency Medical Responder. Learning of the need for Emergency Medical Responders at the Singerly Fire Company through high school friends, McNabb joined the station house in 2016. He was quickly recognized for his skill and dedication to his duties and the patients he served on hundreds of service calls. Focusing on

his training enabled him to become a nationally certified EMT in 2017 and an IV Technician in 2017. He was recognized as a field training officer and certified to drive the emergency response vehicles. Outside of his duties with the Singerly station, McNabb worked as a private transport EMT for Saint Francis Hospital in Wilmington, where he became an EMT III, FTO, and served as an instructor. His obligations extended to service with Five Points Fire Company, Talleyville Fire Company, and the Aberdeen Fire Company. Because his death occurred within 24 hours of being on duty, McNabb’s death is counted as a “line of duty death.” This means he died as a result of that service. The scholarship was developed to support students pursuing credit and non-credit courses

Helping Players Reach their Full Potential

CHESAPEAKE CITY Coach Joe Zang has always been involved in sports. From his early years playing T-ball in Cecilton to being a 3-sport athlete at Bohemia Manor High School, he thrived on the competitive atmosphere and camaraderie that he got from team sports. “I loved playing Little League and YMCA basketball. My brother and I were always active when we were kids, even after the seasons were over. We lived near the Chesapeake Bay so we swam almost every day in the summer. When we wanted to visit a friend who lived a mile away, we jogged to his house. Those things kept me in great condition for team sports during the school year.”

Some of his best memories are of things that happened while playing basketball and baseball, Zang said. “I can easily remember the teams and some of the players we faced, the intensity of the competition, even specific plays and calls by the umpire. I remember coaches who made a huge impression on me and helped shape who I am, not just as a player, but as a person. That’s what I do. I don’t just teach skills for each sport; I teach lessons that last a lifetime.” Drawing on his sports background, Coach Zang became a physical education and health teacher and has coached high school basketball since 2004. He was named Coach

of the Year three times and his teams have been conference and division champions, plus they have won numerous sportsmanship awards. In 2021, Zang founded Z Train, his company that enhances the physical and mental performance of athletes through individual and group instruction. “My goal is to help players reach their full potential. We set goals and then I design a custom program to help the player improve their skills. I love the sense of accomplishment that players get when they master something that they didn’t realize they could do.” His philosophy includes two important components: attitude & effort. “These are the things that players can control,” Coach Zang said. “A person can be talented, but if they don’t have the attitude to go along with it, they won’t grow, and the team won’t grow, so attitude is critical. Effort has to be brought consistently in every practice, every game, and in everything that they do. Without this work ethic, success will be limited.”

Coach Zang tells his team members that regardless of the score, the other team will remember them for how hard they worked through the entire game. Athletes who have trained with Coach Zang praise his methods, saying that working with him helped them tremendously, on and off the court. One player on his team went from a backup guard to a starter, and was a better student because Coach Zang cared about his grades. Another said that the discipline and skills he learned from Coach Zang helped him prepare for college-level sports. Coach Zang is currently accepting new cli-

Conowingo 4-H Youth enters Cecil County Fair with Letsgo, Brandon, Nancy Pig-losi and Chuck Schwiner.

A proud Jace Montanez made his first 4H appearance at the Cecil County Fair this summer and it is one we won’t soon forget. Jace spends part of his year playing Football in the Rising Sun JR Football Program but this year he took on a side project raising some livestock as 4H projects for the Cecil County Fair. Jace sold one of his pigs this year at the livestock auction and next year plans to sell one of his cows which are two year projects with 4H. Nancy Pig-losi was sold at auction to Tony of AUI Pow-

er while Chuck Schwiner will be returning home to fill the family freezer. “Jace has been working very hard with his 4H projects, and is truly enjoying his time with his animals… This is all new to us, so it’s definitely a fun learning experience.” says Jace’s Mother, Jessica Montanez. Letsgo and Brandon have another year under Jace’s care before they will be back at the Fair. We look forward to seeing his return in 2023.
