We are going to be a lot better team than last year, and I’m excited as a freshman,” Cecil’s Kate lyn Norman-Wilson, who had a team-high six aces, said. “The sophomores are really excited about the season.”
The Seahawks built a 13-8 lead over Beaver Coun ty early in the first game, but the Titans rallied with a 9-1 run to take a 17-14 lead midway through the game, prompting Cecil head coach Eden Barton to call a timeout. After the discussion, the Seahawks responded with a 10-1 run to regain the lead at 24-18 before stav ing off a late surge from the Titans, earning a 25-22 win in the game, and Barton told her team to play basic volleyball Barbin of Chesapeake Bay Golf Club reviews talent from High his in

Student Welcomeathletes:tothe 2022-2023 school Summeryear! is behind us, practices (and smelly equipment) are in front of us, and an exciting new fall season lies ahead! It’s the season when your families and fans begin by sweating in the stands, and end it covered in blankets. The season when Friday nights under the lights will be moments you remember forever. A whole new season of possi bility and opportunity awaits. A whole new season with different teammates and dynamics. A whole new season. For our seniors, you will be stepping onto the field, grass, or court for the last time of your high school careers. You may be wondering how you got to this point so quickly, and your families are scratching their heads wondering the same. Others are stepping out for the first time, which is ex citing, and maybe even a bit nerve-wracking.

SHUT DOWN BEAVER COUNTY IN THREE SETS run before Beaver College pulled within three at 11-8, but the Seahawks followed that up by outscoring the Ti tans 14-6 the rest of the way to win the game 25-14 and complete the sweep. “We needed to bring the energy back up. We had it in game one but lost it in game two. When it got down right there in the third, we told them ‘get excited, trust each other and run your plays.’” Barton said of Cecil College’s strong set. The Seahawks were led by Amanda Wag ner’s 11 digs, Lydia Davis 9 kills and Skylar Klingler’s 16 assists, and Barton says if Cecil wants a bounce back season, it has to play like it did against the Titans. “We have to keep doing what we’re doing. It’s a comeback season. Last season was probably our worst season at Cecil, peri od,” Barton. said. “Coming into this season, we have a good team and a good group of girls. We had a good recruiting season, so we’re looking to keep on running.”

Brysen Keithley (SO): Brysen Keithley, the lone lefty on the squad, is a transfer sophomore student and the expected fourth-spot on this talented North East roster. Brysen ex hibits a lot of raw talent, athleticism, and strong fundamen tals for someone who is still fairly new to the game. His development is going to be the key to North East’s state as a consistent scorer in matches, and a great option for a fourth score for the 18-hole competitions. Projected Scor ing Range: 47-55 for 9H, 98-110 for 18H Logan Richardson (SO): Logan Richardson, younger brother of former North East golf and lacrosse star Lance Richardson, shows a lot of promise and raw ability. He has three years of high school golf left, and being thrust into a starter spot will greatly advance his blossoming abilities. Look for him to quickly become a regular contributor this year and years to come. Projected Scoring Range: 50-59 for 9H, 105-118 for 18H

Wyatt Cudmore (FR): Wyatt Cudmore’s fundamentals are extremely solid, and even as a freshman he’s pretty much a lock to be first team all-state. He might even be the sec ond best golfer in the county. He’s well balanced and pretty polished, solid off the tee, good around the greens. Scores are starting to drop as well, and he’s building good tour nament experience which will greatly assist North East in their pursuit for the county’s first team golf title. Projected Scoring Range: 37-43 for 9H, 78-86 for 18H Brandon Kristovich (JR): Kristovich, who made sec ond-team all-county last year, has really taken his game to the next level thanks to some swing changes and an im proved shortgame. He’s flirted with sub-40 rounds in com petition several times so far, and has achieved it in prac tice. Brandon is my frontrunner for most improved golfer, and his continued improvement is the main key for North East to achieve a state title. Projected Scoring Range: 3945 for 9H, 82-90 for 18H

TEAM PROSPECTUS: North East High School is primed and ready for a deep run this fall. The team is led by the reigning 1A/2A Individual State Champion Noah Wallace, who not only is the favorite to win the state championship again but looking to even further his dominance over high school golf. While Wallace will continue to anchor the Indi an’s squad with consistent play around or under par, he is now paired with incoming freshman sensation Wyatt Cud more and rising junior Brandon Kristovich, creating a bona fide “Big 3”. North East rounds out their starting lineup with other prom ising young stars, headlined by transfer student and soph omore Brysen Keithley, returning junior Adison Groce, and sophomore Logan Richardson.

SPORTS WEEKLY GOLF CORRESPONDENT: ANDREW BARBIN JR.
Noah Wallace (JR): Not much else to say. Noah Wallace is at the pinnacle of the county, the district, and the state. He is the best golfer in 1A/2A, and last year it was by a good margin. Wallace isn’t done yet though, and his hard work over the summer will pay dividends. He gained about 50 yards off the tee and is starting to straighten out his ball flight, making him a much better ballstriker. Combining that with the shortgame wizardry that earned him a state title is making him a much more well rounded golfer, and one that Division 1 coaches are going to take notice of. Noah Wallace is the favorite to win at states again. Projected Scoring Range: 32-38 for 9H, 68-76 for 18H
TEAM PROJECTION: North East HS is a team that is built better to compete for the overall state team title than it is for head-to-head matches. At states, 4 scores count (as opposed to 5 from, and having players like Wallace, Cud more, and Kristovich who will likely be around 72, 80, and 84 for 18 holes by October would put them as the best top 3 in 1A/2A, and even counting a projected 95-100 from Keithly, Groce, or Richardson as a fourth score would actu ally put them on pace to win the overall team title (based on last year’s winning score). Getting to states to begin with will be the challenge however, but if they get to it as a team, I think that Coach Seth Grimes’ squad has the best chance out of any of the county teams to win it all. All golfers on the team will be returning for at least another year, giving them a solid two-year window to win Cecil’s first state team title.

2022 HIGH SCHOOL GOLF PREVIEW: CECIL GOLFERS LOOKING TO BE CONTENDERS FOR STATE TITLES
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
RISING SUN HIGH SCHOOL
PROSPECTUS: Rising Sun High School is a team that has no shortage of golf talent, or depth. With 17 golfers trying out for the team, Coach Tim Kern’s Rising Sun golf factory will be fielding their strongest team yet. The Tigers will be led by 2021 Cecil County Golfer-of-the-Year runner up Ben Adams, who is poised to have another strong sea son, as well as senior Tyler Hogue and incoming freshman star Lucas Kilgore. Rounding out the starting lineup will be senior leaders Jake Eckman and Johnny Waldridge, as well as junior Bradley Dietz. Freshman Caiden Jordan and transfer student Reese Swartout may crack the starting lineup as well and be contributors for the 2022 season.
A-7Wednesday, August 31, 2022 Follow Us Online: Facebook.com/CecilCountySportsBlog
TEAM PROJECTION: Rising Sun HS is a team that is built to excel in the regular season, but doesn’t quite have the top heavy firepower North East boasts. That being said, if Rising Sun’s starting 6 perform like they are capable of per forming, this is very much a state championship contending team. It will take the players at the top of the lineup (Ad ams, Hogue, and Kilgore) to put together their best rounds, while also getting great performances from one of the three in Jake Eckman, Johnny Waldridge, and Bradley Dietz.
Jake Eckman (SR): Jake Eckman has made great strides in becoming a solid starter for the Tiger squad. He’s start ing to become far more consistent as well. Boasting solid power and a great shortgame, Jake is going to have his score count in every match. His iron game is improving, but if Jake wants to start breaking into the low 40s this year he needs to continue cleaning that up. Nonetheless, Jake is the depth player every team in Cecil wishes they had. Projected Scoring Range: 42-49 for 9H, 88-95 for 18H Bradley Dietz (JR): Dietz is a golfer who shows a lot of promise, although he is coming into this season rusty. He has great power and knows how to score, but he will need to work hard and improve his accuracy if he wants to help Rising Sun win a championship. He is more than capa ble of breaking into the low 40s with his current toolkit, but much like Hogue and Waldridge, he needs to cut back on the bad double and triple bogeys. Projected Scoring Range: 43-48 for 9H, 90-96 for 18H Caiden Jordan (FR): Caiden is an interesting case. Anoth er avid golfer with a good set of skills. He has plus power and ballstriking, but is still learning on how to score. Once he does though, don’t be surprised if he finds his way into the lineup. Projected Scoring Range: 44-54 for 9H, 92-105 for Reese18HSwartout (JR): Reese transferring from North East HS to Rising Sun HS certainly is a bit of a shift in power dynamics. Reese was the hero during divisionals, shoot ing a career best 46 to give North East the Susquehanna Championship. Reese offered depth that North East need ed, while giving Rising Sun another hot hand to play in their rotation. It will be interesting to see! Projected Scoring Range: 44-54 for 9H, 96-106 for 18H
TEAM
9H Match Projected Scoring Range: 205-220 18H Tournament Projected Scoring Range: 325-350
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Ben Adams (JR): Ben Adams is the leader of this talented Tiger squad, and Rising Sun is only going to go as far as he leads them. Ben has all the scoring tools to compete and finish as a first-team all-state golfer, and he is the only golfer in the county who has a win against Noah Wallace head-to-head. If he continues to develop a longer tee ball he will see his scores plummet, as his accuracy is elite. He does need to cut back on the rounds in the 40s and get in the 30s consistently if Rising Sun is going to compete for a title this year. Projected Scoring Range: 37-43 for 9H, 77-84 for 18H Tyler Hogue (SR): Tyler Hogue is another golfer, like Ben Adams, who needs to elevate his game to the next level if Rising Sun is going to win a state championship. He is arguably the longest driver in the county circuit, and his overall intangibles are probably second to only Wallace. He has a balanced toolkit on top of impressive power, and when he is on he can shoot scores in the 30s. If Hogue can stay consistent, and start eliminating the blow up holes he will be a critical piece to the puzzle. Projected Scoring Range: 37-45 for 9H, 76-88 for 18H Lucas Kilgore (FR): Alongside North East’s Wyatt Cud more, Lucas Kilgore is the one of the most exciting golf prospects in Cecil County’s talented freshman class, and a golfer whose penchant for playing well in pressure is going to be a huge addition to the Tiger’s roster. Kilgore has the drive and shark mentality to thrive at the high school level, but still struggles with consistency and putting from time to time. Nonetheless, this will be a career to watch for the next four years, and a budding rivalry with his peer over at North East. Projected Scoring Range: 38-45 for 9H, 80-88 for Johnny18H Waldridge (SR): Like most of the Rising Sun squad, Johnny Waldridge is an avid golfer who plays as much as he can. The lefty has a high golf IQ, solid short game, good length, and the drive to get better. He gets in trouble with his swing at times, but has shot some great rounds when he’s been on. Johnny has a very high ceiling, but needs to tighten the gap between his ceiling and floor if Rising Sun is going to win it all. Projected Scoring Range: 41-48 for 9H, 84-96 for 18H

Michael Phillips (SR): Michael Phillips is a career Perryville golfer, looking to top off his 4-year run with the Panthers golf program with a divisional win. He has shown improve ment and should be a key contributor in this team’s efforts to achieving their season goals. Projected Scoring Range: 47-56 for 9H, 98-108 for 18H
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Andrew Kidd (JR): Andrew Kidd looks to lead the Pan thers once again in 2022. Fresh off an All-County campaign last season, he has already started the sea son hot - firing a 40 at Exton. Look for Kidd to continue to challenge the ranks of the county and firmly establish himself as one of the best golfers in the District. Pro jected Scoring Range: 3844 for 9H, 80-88 for 18H

9H Match Projected Scoring Range: 220-235 18H Tournament Projected Scoring Range: 345-370
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Braden “Bub” Paris (JR): Braden Paris, in my opinion, has one of the best looking golf swings in the coun ty (easily top 3). He is still learning a lot of the scoring shots, and learning how to score, but he has massive potential. I’m expecting a major breakout year for Bra den, and if he can elevate himself to a first-team all county golfer Bo Manor will be in serious consideration for not only the Susquehan na, but even the County Championships. Projected Scor ing Range: 39-46 for 9H, 82-89 for 18H
Lucas Umbarger (SR): Lucas Umbarger returns as the senior leader for the Perryville Panthers. He has shown significant improvement over the summer, and looks to firmly plant himself in the top 3 for this talented and young Perryville squad. Don’t be surprised if Umbarger sneaks into the All-County Team conversation! Projected Scoring Range: 42-49 for 9H, 87-95 for 18H
Jake Vaughn (SR): Jake was another golfer who won All-County honors for his solid play last season, and his continued improvement will be vital for this Bo Manor team to succeed. He is the senior leader of the team, and look for him to capstone his career with great perfor mances down the stretch. Projected Scoring Range: 42-48 for 9H, 85-95 for 18H Colin O’Neal (SR): Colin is a sweet swinging senior for this Bo Manor squad, and has already shot some great scores to start the year - including a 44 in their first match. Look for O’Neal to sneak into the All-County conversation this year as well! Projected Scoring Range: 42-48 for 9H, 8595 for 18H Noah Ruleau (JR): Ruleau is another talented Bo Manor golfer who has a lot of potential, but is still learning how to dominate the mental side of the game. Like many Cecil County junior golfers, Ruleau is another great student-ath lete with loads of potential that just needs a little polish be fore they are off and running! Projected Scoring Range: 44-50 for 9H, 90-100 for 18H Brody Means (FR): Brody Means is a golfer Coach Grimes is very excited about, and yet another talented addition to this phenomenal freshman class of Cecil County golfers. He has already started his high school career with a round in the 40s, and Coach Grimes expects his stock to rise quickly, and rise high! Projected Scoring Range: 44-50 for 9H, 90-100 for 18H Evan Wilson (SO): Rounding out the starting rotation is re turning sophomore Evan Wilson. He hits the ball hard, but is currently held back by his shortgame. Coach Grimes thinks his scores will drop quickly with improvement around the greens. If that happens, his length will be a dangerous weapon for this young Bo Manor team. Projected Scoring Range: 48-55 for 9H, 99-109 for 18H
TEAM PROJECTION: Bo Manor is built pretty similarly to Perryville, although the back end of the squad is very comparable with Rising Sun’s with a lot of guys in the midto-high 40s. They don’t have a ton of star power, but Bra den Paris could definitely be that guy as soon as this fall if things start clicking. I think Bo Manor is built better than Perryville for 5-scoring matches, but might not be able to keep up with Eldreth, Kidd, and Umbarger at the 18 hole 4-score level. It should be a fun rivalry nonetheless, and it will be interesting as to who will come on top! 9H Match Projected Scoring Range: 220-235 18H Tournament Projected Scoring Range: 350-370
Julian Howes (FR): Coach Plagianakos has been very impressed with what he’s seen from freshman stand out Julian Howes. Look for Howes to compliment Wyatt Cudmore, Lucas Kilgore, and Caiden Jordan in this very talented freshman class of county golfers! Projected Scor ing Range: 46-56 for 9H, 94-104 for 18H

PERRYVILLE HIGH SCHOOL TEAM PROSPECTUS: “The 2022 Golf Season is look ing good for Perryville. We have two stud junior golfers in Andrew Kidd and Jared Eldreth. We also have a senior, Lucas Umbarger who is playing really well right now. We have the largest team in school history at 20 golfers. Our bottom 3 golfers are up for grabs. There are some incom ing freshmen that show promise for making it in the bottom 6, specifically Julian Howes. We also have two other se niors, one is a 4 year golfer (Michael Phillips) and one is brand new to the golf team (Aiden Zimmerman) that are playing really well. We have a lot of returning sophomores that I could tell put in a lot of work over the summer. I have seen great improvement over last year in Blake Ruszala, Holden Coe, and Alex Klevinsky. Overall, our goal is to win the Divisional Tournament and earn our spot back in the Chesapeake Division. We would like to win the County Championship but it is going to be tough going against the returning State Champion, Noah Wallace. Coach Rice and I are really excited about the future of Perryville Golf and can't wait to see how the season plays out.” - Coach Stav ros Plagianakos TEAM PROJECTION: Perryville is going to be a team that turns a lot of heads, and a perfect demonstration of how great golf in Cecil County is becoming. It’s going to be tough to take down the North East and Rising Sun squads, but don’t be surprised if Perryville is the dark horse that pulls the rug out from under their county rivals. They have depth and youth on their side, and the future of this golf team is very bright not only for 2022 but for years to come.
Owen Kilduff (JR): Kilduff has played his way into the start ing lineup early into the season, firing a 48 in his first match. With consistent play in the 40s, look for Kilduff to hold onto the starting spot in this deep rotation. Projected Scoring Range: 45-52 for 9H, 94-104 for 18H
TEAM PROSPECTUS: Bo Manor is a team that has shown significant improvement and looks to take a big step for ward in their journey to try to take the Susquehanna Divi sion Championship. They are a very balanced team, and could be an even darker horse than Perryville to pull off an upset. Coach Sandy Grimes believes his squad has a legitimate shot at the divisional championship, and that it’s a three horse race between Bo Manor, Perryville, and Aberdeen. Aside from the two seniors in Jake Vaughn and Colin O’Neal, this team will return four players for next sea son. Look for Bo Manor to take a big jump forward not only now but for the future. Braden Paris is shaping up to be come a legitimate contender for first-team all conference, and Coach Grimes is very impressed with Freshman Brody Means and the continued improvements of Noah Ruleau and Evan Wilson.
BO MANOR HIGH SCHOOL
Jared Eldreth (JR): Jared is a golfer with boundless po tential. He has a very pol ished swing, plenty of dis tance, and has a complete toolkit. He is learning how to score, and is starting to improve at the right time. He recently won the Men’s C Flight Club Championship at Chesapeake Bay Golf Club, and looks to continue his strong play into the fall season. Projected Scoring Range: 39-45 for 9H, 82-92 for 18H
Spencer Cain (FR): Spencer showed promise hitting big drives while practicing with the varsity squad as an 8th grader. He spent time working on his game in the off sea son and hopes to be a presence with the varsity team this season.
TEAM PROJECTION: Elkton does not have enough play ers to post scores in matches, but they do have a shot at competing for the overall county championship. Simone and Carley also have a great shot at cracking the all-county team with solid performances this season.
