FUN FOR ALL AGES AT THE CECIL COUNTY FAIR
YOUR #1 SOURCE FOR CECIL COUNTY SPORTS COVERAGE
FAIR HILL - There truly is something for everyone at the Cecil County Fair. The 9-day event draws over 75,000 people each year from across the Tri-State Region and beyond to witness three nights of the popular Demolition Derby, a professionally-sanctioned
rodeo and tractor pulls. This year saw the first Power Wheels Derby for kids which filled up immediately when registration began. The midway is a popular spot for teens and children of all ages with carnival rides and midway games to win prizes.
The local 4-H youth compete in numerous events and show livestock they have raised as projects to auction off. After the tears have dried from parting with their projects they start looking forward to next year and the next animals they will care for to show at the next
Fair.
The food vendors serve up everything from deep fried Oreos to pit beef and pit ham sandwiches with many Cecil Restaurants coming out to the Fair as food vendors.

SALISBURY, MD - The Churchville Lightning 18U squad ran through the field at the 18U USSSA Eastern Nationals winning 8 straight games enroute to claiming championship honors. The Lady Bolts claimed the program's 13th National or World Series Championship in impressive fashion as they won the championship game 13-0 over the East Coast Elite. The Lightning started the event with 3 pool play victories as the team claimed top seed from their PHOTOS BY SCOTT SERIO Pool. Ironically, the double elimination bracket had the Lightning slotted in the top spot and the team was posed to battle down the ladder of the bracket. In the opening round game of double elimination, the Lightning squared off against the East Coast Elite (ECE). The Elite jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to a 2-run homer in the top of the first off of Lightning starter Alesia Doctor. But after that big fly, Doctor stymied the ECE bats for the balance of the game in order to give her Lightning teammates time to
rally. And rally they did. Mikayla Bryant walked to lead off and raced home when Tai Turner’s base hit to left eluded the left fielder and Bryant raced home on the outfield miscue. The Lady Bolts tied the score in the third, when Maddie Buher walked with the based loaded. But after the 3rd inning, a pitcher’s duel ensued and continued into the final frame. Savannah Reedy led off with an infield single and moved to second base on another Buher base-on-balls. Alexis Trzeciak stepped to the plate and laced an opposite field single to left field to plate Reedy and the Lightning advanced to the second round. Waiting in round 2 was the NJ Mystics Premier. The Mystics were runner’s up at the 2021 event and the contest was highly anticipated. The Lightning jumped on top early as Mikayla Bryant and Jessica Bouthet hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the game. The Lightning got 3 more runs in the second inning as Continued on A-2

Bouthet blasted her second home run of the game to give the Lightning a 5-0 lead. But the Mystics were determined and scored 3 times to cut the lead to 5-3 heading into the 6th inning. Once again, Jessica Bouthet came to the rescue this time hitting a grand slam home run to give the Lightning a comfortable 9-3 lead. Bouthet game was one for the record books as she became only the 2nd player in Lightning history to have a 3-homer game and also became the 2nd player to have an 8 RBI game. Kyrsten Coppage followed Bouthet’s third home run with a bomb of her own to give the Lightning a 10-3 lead and Coppage’s hit marked the second time in the game that the Lightning hit back-toback homers. The Mystics rallied one more time and hit a late 3-run homer to make the game close, but the Lightning held on 10-6 and
advanced to the semi-finals of the winner’s bracket. In the semi-finals, the Lightning expected to see the 2021 Champions, but the defending champs (Stripes and Strikes) fell to the PA Razorbacks, who were set to face the Lightning. Alesia Doctor dominated the Razorbacks as she pitched 5 scoreless innings allowed only 3 hits while striking out 10. Doctor’s 10 strikeouts marked the 27th time she has struck out 10 batters or more. All Doctor needed was a little run support and she got it as the Lightning banged out 11 hits in an easy 8-0 win. Jessica Bouthet blasted her 4th homer of the event and Alexis Trzeciak added 3 RBIs. Maddie Buher, Tai Turner, Kyrsten Coppage and Bouthet each had 2 hit games for the Bolts. On to the winner’s bracket final where the Lightning had a match-up with the East Coast Titans. Once again, Alesia Doctor took her place in the circle, and she completely shut down the Titans. Doctor
allowed only 4 base runners in the contest and allowed no runs for the second straight game. The Lightning offense would get all of the runs they needed in the first inning. Mikayla Bryant singled and moved to second on a perfectly executed SAC bunt by Jessica Bouthet. Moments later Bryant would score when Gretchen Barstad laced a single to centerfield. Barstad would single home another run in the third inning and Tai Turner added 3 RBIs to pace the Lightning attack. Bryant was the offensive catalyst as she reached base 3 times and scored each time in the 6-0 Lightning win. The Lightning stood as the only undefeated team and awaited the loser’s bracket final. Amazingly, despite losing in the first round to the Lightning, the East Coast Elite battled through 8 games in the loser’s bracket to try and seek its revenge on the Lightning. But the final game amounted to a “victory lap” for the Lightning as they came out on fire and scored 5 times
in the first inning. Tai Turner singled home Mikayla Bryant with the team’s first run and then back-to-back two out singles by Maddie Buher and Alexis Trzeciak each plated 2 runs and the Lightning jumped out 5-0. Bryant singled and scored in the 2nd inning on a Gretchen Barstad double and the Lightning increased the lead to 6-0 after 2. Alesia Doctor mowed down the Elite hitters in 1-2-3 fashion in each of the first 3 innings and all that was left was what would be the final score. In the bottom of the third, the Lightning sealed the deal with 7 runs, the final 4 coming on a game clinching, walk-off grand slam by Tai Turner. Amazingly, the Lightning won 13-0 over a tired Elite squad that had to be commended for their fantastic run through the loser’s bracket. But this day and this event was all about the Lightning and the team took home then 18U Eastern National Championship.
DOCTOR WRAPS UP SUMMER WITH AN OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE IN EASTERN NATIONALS CHAMPIONSHIP
Churchville Lightning 18U's Alesia Doctor won 7 games at the USSSA Eastern Nationals and was named the event's Most Outstanding Pitcher. Alesia pitched 35 innings, claimed 46 strikeouts and pitched to a sparkling 1.60 ERA as she led the team to the tournament championship.

FIRST EVER POWER WHEELS DERBY IS HUGE SUCCESS FAIR HILL - The number of spots available in the first ever Power Wheels Derby was limited and proved to be one of the toughest competitions to get into. Within an hour of registrations opening the event was full. The entries were divided into two heats much like the adult version that would run afterwards. Each power wheels vehicle had a ballon taped to the front and the back and the object was to pop your opponents ballons while pro-
tecting your own. The GraveDigger entry driven by Conner easily won the first heat. The height of his vehicle may have helped make it difficult for opponents to make contact with the balloon. The second heat was won by Addison. Her Unicorns and Rainbows Jeep was able to evade enough hits to keep the bright red ballon on the front of her vehicle intact for the entire event.
