By Amanda Callaghan
2A EAST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
LANDOVER - On Monday, Febuary 6th, Elkton, Rising Sun, and North East travelled to the PG Sports Complex in Landover, Maryland for the 2A East Region Championships. They entered the stadium nervous for the tough competition, but excited and hopeful for an opportunity to place in the top four and qualify for states. In the busy stadium, 15 teams prepared for the races ahead.
The meet started with a bang! The first athletes to secure their spots at states was Rising Sun’s girls’ 4x800. The team of Anna Callaghan, Emily Wishart, Savannah Lacey, and Amanda Callaghan led an upset against the #1 seeded Kent Island team to take first in the region with a 10:20.67. Not long after, the Rising Sun boy’s 4x800 also gained a spot at states, with the team of John Ferry, Matt McKay, Logan Meadows, and Nik Haraldsson placing fourth with a time of 8:59.81.
Cecil athletes next found sucess in the 1600m run, where in two highly competative races, Leanna Rogers of North East and John Ferry of Rising Sun qualified for states. Rogers earned 4th in the girls’ race, finishing in 5:28.39, setting a new PR by 15 and a half seconds. Ferry took third in the boy’s race, running a 4:51.81. Impressively, both Leanna Rogers and John Ferry raced again later in the evening in the 3200 meter race, and both qualified in the 3200 as well! Rogers earned fourth again in the 3200, running a 12:45.64.
John Ferry finished in second, running a 10:38.18, setting another massive PR by 28 seconds.
THANK
In the 500m dash, Amanda Callaghan took second place with a PR of 1:21.99, qualifying for states.
Next were finals for the sprint events, where Cecil represented well again. In the 55m hurdles, Katie Callaghan took fourth place in finals with a 9.44. Isaiah Huffstutler of Elkton took second in the 55m dash, running a 6.65. Both Huffstutler and Callaghan will compete at states. Elkton’s boys’ 4x200 also qualified, with the team of Isaiah Huffstutler, Allan Tate, Taino Jurry, and Joshua Brill running a 1:36.39 into fourth.
The meet wasn’t finished yet!
In a close race, Amanda and Katie Callaghan of Rising Sun both qualified in the 800: Amanda Callaghan earned second running a 2:32.42, and Katie Callaghan earned third with a 2:33.49. Both returned to the track only 15 minutes later to run the 4x400 relay, where Rising Sun’s girls team of Anna Callaghan,
Bella Chavis, Amanda Callaghan, and Katie Callaghan earned fourth with a time of 4:24.81. While their teammates competed on the track, Cecil athletes performed amazingly in the field events. Brin Khanjar of North East cleared 4’ 11 in the high jump, jumping into second place. Her teammate Alyssa Snyder cleared 7’ 0 in pole vault, earning third and qualifying for states. Caroline Mercer of Rising Sun threw 32 feet 10.5 inches, winning second. In team scores, Rising Sun’s girls team had the highest county finish, earning second overall with 61 points. Many of their points came from success in the middle and long distance events and relays. Congratulations!
The indoor season will come to an end at the MPSSAA 2A Indoor State Championships, where Cecil Countys 18 qualifiers will compete. Good luck!

TOME TITANS FALL TO TRI-STATE CRUSADERS 55-19
ELKTON - The matchup between the Tri-State Christian Academy and Tome School boys teams was an exercise of two different teams on different missions, where the final score didn’t reflect the success and progress each for which each team was aiming. The Crusaders handled the inexperienced Titans team handily with a
55-19 win, but both coaches exited the affair talking about the positives.
“We are on what we call our Road to Ohio, a postseason tournament with 112 teams in Ohio, so every team that we play from here on out we’ve got goals that we set,” said Tri-State Boys and Girls Head Coach Chris Scarbro. “We have been liv-
ing and dying by the three, so the first quarter they weren’t allowed to shoot a three. We were working on dribble, drive, penetration. We were trying to work on different facets of the game we are not comfortable with to try to get better.”
Tome kept the game

TOME TITANS FALL TO TRI-STATE CRUSADERS 55-19
continued from
close early as Tri-State worked on their own play, highlighted by four Spencer Cain blocked shots in the first four minutes. Once TriState opened up their press and half-court trap play, the Titans couldn’t withstand the pressure.
In spite of the lopsided score, Scarbro found it easy to compliment the work Coach Doe Goldman has put in for the Titans this year. “I give all the credit in the world to Coach Doe, He has group full of freshman playing varsity basketball,
extremely young, and then a couple upperclassmen. They came out tonight and played great defense on us,” said Scarbro. “They were in the game. I saw them three weeks ago until now and they grew, they grew tremendously, and all that credit goes to Coach Doe and the heart that those boys are playing with. He gets the most out of those boys and they are going to be good.”
Sam Falko and Kyle Rogers each scored 14 for the Crusaders in the win. Luke Wagenknecht led the Titans with eight.
The game meant something else to the Crusaders who had a scare when a firearm discharged in the hallway at Appoqunimink High School during their game last Monday night. It left the Tri-State squad a little rattled and helped re-focus Scarbro’s squads. He said he wanted to focus on the fact that they are just playing a game and there are things bigger than the game. “I am humbled to have the opportunity to coach these boys and win or lose we give all the glory to God,” said Scarbro.

CARILLO SISTERS LEAD TOME TITANS TO WIN OVER CRUSADERS
ELKTON - Things fell into place at the right time for the Tome School girls basketball team on the road at Tri-State Christian Academy as they scored the first eight points and never looked back. Armed with a 20-3 halftime lead, the Titans coasted to a 33-26 win against the Crusaders.
“Injuries and people getting sick, it’s just been an up and down year for us. We just have to have confidence, and everyone has to know their role,” said Tome
Coach Jermaine Palmer. He also commented on the consistent press and halfcourt defense the Titans have transitioned into. “Being more aggressive is just them and how they want to play. So that is what we practice.”
The result was the Carillo sisters leading the scoring for Tome. Alivia and Ainsley posted 13 and nine points respectively and senior Landen Cain adding seven.
Tri-State did mount a comeback in the third quar-
ter, but that was almost by design for Palmer thanks to the Titans’ lead. “We had a couple girls are not feeling well today, so we tried to slow it down and kill some clock,” said Palmer. “We tried to bring them out of the zone so they had to play us in man. Any team that plays us in man is not going to beat us. Then, I just said let’s get back to the beginning of the game strategy and let’s finish this out.”
Hope Pfadt led the Crusaders with 12 points.

TIGERS DROP THIRD LOSS OF SEASON ON SENIOR NIGHT
North Harford rolled into Rising Sun looking to avenge an early season loss to the Tigers. The Hawks caught Rising Sun off guard, got them in early foul trouble and pressed forward for a 55-49 upset win on the road.
In both the first and second halves Rising Sun leader Jordan Lynch ended up on the bench with foul trouble early then fouled out early in the final frame. With Lynch on the bench, North
Harford used a size advantage and Jenna Ahmrein’s 23 points to keep the Tigers at bay most of the night.
Alison Stoudt and Sarah Clark, 16 and 13 points each, kept Rising Sun in the fight, but the Tigers were never able to close the gap.
Caroline Nicholson added 16 points for the Hawks.
Jillian Ragan posted a dozen for Rising Sun and Lynch was held to just six points.
