Landon Horsey leads fourth quarter surge by Eagles for 61-55 win over Indians
By Kevin Phillips CHESAPEAKECITY-Bohemia Manor trailed visiting North East by three points late in the third quarter when Landon Horsey tallied his first points of the game on a three-pointer to tie the score.
That basket sparked Horsey as he scored 19 of the Eagles last 27 points to lead Bohemia Manor past the Indians for a 61-55 victory Thursday night in UCBAC Susquehanna Division boys’ basketball action.
After his slow start, Horsey’s confidence started to waver but felt like he could not dwell on the start, and once he finally made a shot, he was ready to take another one.
“I just stayed confident. I wasn’t confident at the be-
ginning, and I tend to have my head down a bit. I knew we had to win the game, so I had to come back.,” Horsey said. “Once I hit it, everything went away. I was confident on the court.”
Horsey’s first basket made it 37-37 late in the third quarter, but that tie was short-lived as James Traynham made a layup to help North East regain the lead at 39-37, but Horsey sent the Eagles into the fourth quarter with a 41-39 lead when he scored on a four-point play in the waning seconds of the third.
Bo Manor opened the final quarter on a 18-7 run, which was powered by five three-pointers during the surge, and Horsey made three of those en route to 12 fourth quarter points.
For the game, the Ea-
gles finished with 11 made three-pointers, and that was an improvement from the previous five games, where they have struggled to score.
“That was the difference in the game. We shot 20 percent, 19 percent, and we have been terrible. I have an

offense efficiency rating, and we have been terrible for five games,” Bo Manor head coach Sandy Grimes said. “Tonight, we weren’t terrible. Knocking down some shots makes a big difference. Landon can shoot, and the one he hit from really deep … I have told him, ‘if you can get there and make that shot, I don’t have a problem. Sometimes, it’s a good shot if it’s uncontested.”
Horsey believes that the Eagles are capable of playing this well on a consistent basis as long as they continue to execute the offensive game plan.
“I felt it was pretty good. When everyone is running the offense correctly, I feel like we get open shots, and we can knock them down,” Horsey said.
The 18-7 run that began the fourth quarter turned a two-point lead into a 13-point lead at 59-46 midway through the final frame, and Bo Manor held on from there to snap a six-game losing streak.
Ayden Holderer scored 14 points for the Eagles while the Indians got a game-high 26 points from Jebez Griffin and 12 points from Luke Keefer.
Crusaders roll over Rams 74-23
By Kendra StamperELKTON - The Tristate
Christian Crusaders hosted the West Nottingham Academy Rams in Thursday’s game. Tristate won the tip off and set the pace for the rest of the game. Winning within the first 3 minutes, Tristate implemented their diamond three-quarter-court press after a timeout. Tristate trapped the Rams as soon as they crossed half court, leading to steels and breakaway layups for the Crusaders. West Nottingham had a hard time setting up their shell offense, and lost the first quarter 4-21.
Tristate’s Jackson Sartin scored 9 of his 16 points in the first quarter of the game.
Tristate kept the press on until midway through the 2nd quarter where they sagged back into a 3-2 defense. From there, West Nottingham tried to work the ball in the half court using their forwards to set screens for the guards. Despite a handful of 3-point shot attempts, West Nottingham had a tough time scoring. The Rams attempted a man-to-man defense in the final 3 minutes of the half. This seemed to work better for them, as they put 7 points on the board.
Coming out of the lock
er room with a 43-17 lead, Tristate let Sartin work. He quickly scored his last 7 points within 2 minutes of the quarter. West Nottingham had no answer for the Crusaders; the Rams faced a high 2-1-2 half court defense that intimidated ball handlers yet again, and the shots they had just did not fall. Facing a running clock, both teams finished out the game with heart and hustle. Tristate showed no mercy trapping every ball they could, but West Nottingham never stopped playing. The Crusaders walked away with a 74-23 win, 3 of their players scoring in double
digits. Sartin had 16 points; Micah Leins finished with 13, all scored in the second half; and Kyle Rogers went 5/6 from the free throw line for 14 total points along with 5 rebounds.
PANTHERS JUMP TO EARLY LEAD AGAINST TIGERS FOR 66-57 WIN
By Kendra StamperPERRYVILLE - Tuesday’s
game at Perryville High School was a match between the Perryville Panthers and the Rising Sun Tigers. Perryville started strong with a 13-0 lead 2 minutes into the game. Nine of the first 13 points came from Ty Patchell’s 3 three-pointers. He finished the game with 12 points, all from beyond the arch. Rising Sun worked a half-court man-to-man defense, but Perryville’s 2-3 led to steals and rebounds giving them fast breaks. The period ended with a 25-13 score, Perryville.
In the second quarter, Rising Sun kept their man
defense on, while Perryville intimidated the Tigers with a full court diamond press.
Rising Sun found themselves at the free throw line quickly, as the Panthers’ fouls sent the Tigers into a 1-and-1 free throw advantage. The score was 32-22 when Perryville coach called a timeout to pull off the press. With that, Perryville went on a quick 7-0 run, and entered the locker room with a 15 point advantage.
The second half started 39-24. To find a weak spot in either defense, both teams ran guard-dominant motion offenses. However, most points came from either fast breaks on Perryville’s end, or free throws on Rising Sun’s end. Perryville’s
coach called a timeout in which he demanded hustle.
The Panthers returned to their full court press. This sent Rising Sun into a free throw advantage yet again. If the Panthers sank a few more free throws, it may have been a closer game because they out-scored Perryville by 6 in the third quarter.
Winning by 9, Perryville entered the final period with a 48-39 score. Rising Sun played a 2-3, tight on Perryville’s guards. This forced the Panthers to find Kyle Richards inside. Richards had 6 points in the final quarter, and 12 for the game. Panthers Sean Beard and John Mette also finished with 12 points each. Patrick
Rosenberger contributed 14 points for the Tigers, and Wyatt McDowell finished with 13.
Losing with 4:26 left on the game clock and a score of 58-45, Rising Sun Coach called a timeout. Out of this, Perryville also changed their defense to what looked like a high 3-2 trapping Rising Sun as they crossed half court. This forced another Rising Sun timeout where the coach put on a full-court man-to-man defense to look for quick turnovers. However, Perryville broke the press back to back causing a third Tiger timeout. They could not find a solution in time. The score ended 6657, Perryville.
Havre de Grace Warriors defeat Indians 52-42
By Kendra StamperNORTH EAST - The North East Indians hosted the Havre de Grace Warriors on Monday looking to improve on their 2-6 start of the season.
The Indians won the tip off, but found themselves immediately playing defense. They ran a 1-3-1 defense to start the game, trapping in the corners. On the other side of the ball, the Warriors ran a full court press; this made it hard for point guard Katy Hammer to set up an offense. The first quarter was back and forth
in terms of fast break attempts stemming from good defense by both teams. The quarter ended with a 17-11 Havre de Grace lead.
In the second quarter North East picked up their intensity in a man-to-man defense, but they found themselves in foul trouble early. This sent Havre de Grace to the foul line a few times, and when Warrior Carla Dunson hit 2 backto-back 3 pointers, the Indians faced a 14-point deficit.
Tess Keatley, North East’s 3-point shooter, was limited by Havre de Grace defense after her second shot be
yond the arch early in the second quarter. North East matched up on defense in the final few minutes of the half, trying to force steals. However, the score going into the locker room was 2919, Havre de Grace.
Entering the second half, North East retreated to a 2-3 defense while Havre de Grace stayed in man-toman. The defenses seemed to work: halfway into the third quarter the score only jumped to 31-20. With great intensity on defense, teams ran little set offense. In the final quarter, both teams just tried to work in their of-
fense. North East started to find Reagan Hassel for paint points. She secured 11 points for the game, 6 of them being in the second half. With 3:03 on the game clock, North East was only down by 7. North East called a timeout with just over a minute left to put the team in full-court man-to-man. The Indians could not chip away at the lead, Warriors held onto it and finished the game 52-42. Warriors Carla Dunson finished with 14 points and Azareya Whiting with 11. The Indians shared their fame, with 4 players scoring 6 points each.

GOLDEN ELKS 55-45 WIN AGAINST PANTHERS
By Kendra StamperPERRYVILLE - In Mon-
day’s game at Perryville High School, the Elks faced the Panthers. Both teams started in 2-3 defenses, matching up well. With under a minute left in the first quarter, Perryville was winning 12-10, but 2 quick turnovers put the Elks up 15-12. Point guard, #10 Gangemi sunk a 3 with 1.7 seconds left in the first quarter. She lead both teams in scoring with 19 points.
The second quarter got away from the Panthers, as they only put 3 points on the board before halftime. Elkton shut down 3-point-shooter Alyssa
Stanley from Perryville, ultimately throwing the Panthers off their offense. Contributions from Elkton’s #11 Pugh and #10 Gangemi sent the team into the locker room with a 12 point advantage. The score was 15-27 at the half.
Perryville’s coach made a defensive change coming out of the locker room; the Panthers ran a 1-3-1 half court press to try to slow down Elkton’s run. This was successful, Perryville started to slowly catch up. Perryville’s #40 Taylor White dropped 6 points, and previous JV player #21 Kilby came off the bench with a three-pointer and 2 floaters for 7 points.
The score started to even out, but not for long. Elkton maintained their paint points with the help of #21 Redden, and ended the quarter with a 38-32 lead.
In the final period, Elkton held onto the lead. Despite 7 more points from Kilby in the last quarter, Perryville could not cut the lead to less than 6. They found themselves in foul trouble, giving Elkton that advantage. The Elks sunk 6 out of 7 free throws in the 1-and-1 bonus, half of them coming from Gangemi. Elkton had a 10 point lead and the ball with 17 seconds on the clock; they kept the possession, and the 55-45 win.
