Cecil County Indoor Track Teams compete at Tower Hill

WILMINGTON, DE - On Saturday, January 21st six teams competed at the Tower Hill School in the second Cecil County Indoor Track Meet this year. Athletes performed exceptionally, and personal records were broken. The meet ran smoothly, thanks to all the coaches who volunteered their time. Participating in the meet were all five Cecil County Schools along with Havre De Grace High School. As the day progressed, spirits were high while athletes from all schools scored points for their teams and faced friendly competition in the county. Athletes performed incredibly on Saturday morning to run their best possible times before the upcoming Regional Championships Track meets on Feb 6th.

Perryville won the meet for boys, earning a total of 90 points, followed incredibly closely by Rising Sun in second with 85 points. In third place was Havre De Grace, earning 59 points. On the girls side, Rising Sun won with a whopping 167 points, with North East winning second (54 points) and Elkton close behind with 40 points.

There were many competitive events at the meet. The meet started with a bang with fast heats of the 55m hurdles and 55m dash. Katie Callaghan of Rising Sun closely won the girls 55m hurdles, coming out of a slower heat to win by time. Ty Stiffler of Perryville won the boy’s 55m hurdles, closely beating teammate Deyshawn Henderson and Rising Sun’s Travis Bare. Elkton won both the boy’s and girls 55m dash: Isaiah Huffstutler took the boy’s race, and Elkton swept the girl’s race with MyAven Ewing earning first, Sage North finishing second, Myracle Miles finishing third, and Shadai Givens finishing fourth.

Intense competition continued with many 300 heats; winning the 300 was Caroline Mercer and Zach Ayres from Rising Sun and Perryville. Elkton’s Sage North and Joshua Brill took second place in their respective races, followed by Bella Chavis (Rising Sun) and Evan Beynan (Perryville) in third. The 500m run was just as competitive with Amanda Callaghan (1:23.67, Rising Sun) winning

COUGARS DERAIL TIGERS UNDEFEATED RUN

NORTH EAST–Rising Sun

took on visiting Fallston in a possible late-round playoff preview Thursday night, looking to continue its undefeated season.

The Tigers struggled shooting from the field and from the free throw line, dooming them to a 40-37 loss at the hands of the Cougars in UCBAC girls’ basketball action Thursday

night.

Rising Sun made just 13 field goals and converted 10 of 27 free throw opportunities, and the poor shooting night helped negate a strong team defensive effort.

“We just missed opportunities. We didn’t capitalize when we got steals. We weren’t able to capitalize when we got drives or when we got layups,” Tiger head coach Kathy Stoudt said. It was hard to get Sarah

(Clarke) open against their defense. They were targeting her.”

The Cougars jumped out to a 12-4 lead midway through the first quarter, but Rising Sun responded with a 5-0 run to end the frame to cut its deficit to 12-9.

After Fallston scored the first three points of the second quarter to make it 15-9, the Tigers had their best shooting stretch of the game, going on a 13-4

surge to take a 22-19 into the halftime break.

One of the keys to Rising Sun’s good second quarter was their defense creating turnovers, which led to scoring chances, but in the second half the Tigers were not able to convert on those chances.

ELKTON GOLDEN ELKS BASKETBALL

Senior Zyan Williams shined in his first action in three weeks as he scored a team-high 15 points, and he was happy to get back on the court to help his team.

Golden Elks are 9-1 at the half way mark for the season and Williams is looking for a playoff run his Senior year.

One of the most exciting games to see right now is Rising Sun Tigers Middle School Girls Basketball Team. The duo of McBride and Stephens helped the young Tigers to shut out the Bohemia Manor Eagles on Friday by a score of 35-0.

Heidi Stephens scored within the first 10 seconds of the game to get the Tigers off to a roaring start.

One of the best games to watch right now is a Rising Sun Middle School Basketball game!!!

to convert enough,” Stoudt said. “I feel like we missed a lot of shots we needed to convert in order to beat a team like Fallston.”

The Cougars took control of the game in the third quarter as they held the Tigers to just one field goal en route to winning the frame 16-6 and taking a 35-28 lead into the fourth quarter.

Rising Sun’s defense picked up the pressure in the fourth quarter as it held Fallston to just five points in the frame, allowing the Tigers to claw back in the game; but the game-tying three-pointer went wide of the basket, allowing the Cougars to escape with a

three-point victory.

The loss is Rising Sun’s first of the year after 11 straight victories to open the season, and Stoudt says the key to bouncing back after loss is getting back to action.

“I think every game can be used as a learning opportunity. They need to bounce back and get back to work. We have three games next week to keep our goal of winning every game. We’ll focus on that. It stings now, and the girls are upset. It’s time to get back to work tomorrow.”

Jordan Lynch paced the Tigers with 17 points while Ayla Galloway led all players with 19 points for Fallston.

WILLIAMS LEADS ELKS IN 72-53 WIN OVER TIGERS

ELKTON–After giving up

10 straight points midway through the first quarter to fall behind Rising Sun by four points, Elkton called a timeout to regain their composure. The Golden Elks responded by scoring 24 of the next 28 points to take a double-digit lead, and their lead did not fall below 10 points the rest of the way to earn a 72-53 victory over the visiting Tigers in UCBAC boys’ basketball action Friday night.

“We sometimes lack on defense, and when the timeout came, we told each other we had to pick it up and get steals and scores,”

Elkton’s Zyan Williams said.

DJ Piner started the surge with a field goal while Jaden Nichols followed that up with 5 straight points to give the Golden Elks the lead for good at 13-10, and by the end of the first quarter Elkton had an 18-12 lead.

tinued their surge well into the second quarter as they scored 12 of the first 14 points in the frame en route to building a 30-14 lead, and Elkton head coach Charles Givens Sr., said the surge was a result of having the right combination of players in the game.

“I guess they were playing great depending on who was playing in the game. When we had the right combination of people in the game, it was never a problem,” Givens, Sr., said. “What you see in the game is what you would see in practice. The same thing we do here is what we do everything. We try to have the team run up and down the floor as fast as you can and play defense.”

After the surge, the game settled into a rhythm where the Golden Elks would get their lead up to the low 20s with Rising Sun responding with a mini-surge to cut their deficit down to the low teens, and that would be the trend for the remainder of

the game as Elkton held on to the victory.

Williams shined in his first action in three weeks as he scored a team-high 15 points, and he was happy to get back on the court to help his team.

“It was nice. It’s been three weeks, and I was excited to get back on the court,” Williams said. “I came back and showed how I can help the

team, trying to get all of the rebounds and make sure the team goes far.”

Kyle Jackson and Obote Briscoe each chipped in eight points for the Golden Elks. The Tigers got 15 points from Patrick Rosenberger, 14 from Brandon Cech, 11 from Tyler Stoudt, and 10 from Wyatt McDowell.

for girls, followed by Leanna Rogers (1:27.08, North East) in second and Isabelle Griffith in third (1:34.24, Rising Sun).

The 800m run was a fast event as well, with Rising Sun girl’s sweeping the 800. First was Katie Callaghan (2:44.20), followed by Anna Callaghan in second (2:45.94), and Isabelle Griffith (2:56.59) in third. On the boys side of the event, Daniel Katz (North East) won with a time of 2:20.25. Elkton’s Allan Tate finished third with a time of 2:27.49.

The action wasn’t limited to the short and mid-distance events. Both the boy’s and girl’s 1600 races were extremely fast. In the girl’s 1600, four girls broke the 6:00 barrier. Bo Manor’s Katie Scott won the race, running a 5:42.57. Behind her was North East’s Leanna Rogers in second (5:43.84), Rising Sun’s Anna Callaghan in third (5:49.92), and Bo Manor’s Skylar Pizzuli in fourth (5:57.71). In the boy’s 1600, four boys broke the 5:00 barrier, with Rising Sun’s John Ferry closely winning the event (4:51.89) after a sprint-off with Bo Manor’s Ethan Dell (4:52.40). Rising Sun’s Matt McKay earned third (4:55.49) followed by teammate Nik Haraldsson in fourth (4:57.14). John Ferry and Kaitlin Perry of Rising Sun each ran outstandingly in the 3200, with both win-

ning their races by over a minute. Rising Sun swept the girl’s 3200, with Abby Spero in second, and Sarah Villatoro Puerta in third.

Cecil’s relays were just as competitive with many close races. Rising Sun girls won first on three relays (4x200, 4x400, 4x800), with teams of Anna Callaghan, Caroline Mercer, Katie Callaghan, and Amanda Callaghan for the 4x200, Emily Wishart, Isabelle Griffith, Bella Chavis, and Amanda Callaghan in the 4x400, and a team of Anna Callaghan, Emily Wishart, Katie Callaghan, and Savannah Lacey in the 4x800. The boy’s 4x200 was won by Perryville’s team of Zach Ayers, Ty Stiffler, Evan Beynon, and Jaiden Proctor.

Rising Sun’s 4x800 won the event with a team of John Ferry, Logan Meadows, Nik Haraldsson, and Matt McKay. The last event of the meet, the boys 4x400, was a tense race with Perryville and Rising Sun’s boy’s teams neck-and-neck, fighting for which team would win the meet. After a close dash between Perryville’s anchor Zach Ayers and Sun’s anchor Travis Bare, Perryville’s team of Evan Beynon, Brady Martin, Ty Stiffler, and Zach Ayers finished on top with a time of 3:52.89, a mere 0.26 seconds in front of Rising Sun.

The field events were another showcase of the county’s best athletes. Winning the girl’s high jump was North East’s Brin Khan-

jar, setting a season record of 5’2. Perryville’s Deyshawn Henderson won the boy’s high jump, clearing 5’ 10, a personal record. In the shot put, Caroline Mercer of Rising Sun won the event with a new PR (33’ 1.75), as did Jacob Blankenship of North East (40’ 11.25).

The meet was a great finish of the indoor track regular season. Now the Cecil teams move on to Regionals! On Monday, February 6th, Perryville and Bo Manor head to the Baltimore Armory for the 1A Central Region Championships, while Elkton, Rising Sun, and North East head to the Prince George’s Sports Complex for the 2A East Region Championships. Cecil Seahawks defeat Garrett College Lakers 93-57

NORTH EAST - In Wednesday’s game at Cecil College, the Seahawks hosted the Garrett College Lakers. Garrett won the tip and Cecil retreated to man-to-man against the Lakers 5-out motion offense. Cecil took and kept the lead quickly despite going against a full court man defense. The Seahawks set up in a 4-high offense to start, but it shortly turned into a consistent shell motion. They shared the ball well, with 4 players scoring double digits by the final buzzer.

Garrett College set up in a motion offense sending flashers to the high post to attempt high-low looks. This did not work as well for them

as it did for the Seahawks, so the Lakers looked to take more outside shots. At around the 10 minute mark, the Lakers sunk 2 back to back 3 pointers making the score 12-10, Cecil. With this confidence, Garrett put on a 2-2-1 full court press that forced Cecil to rush their game a bit. However freshman Seahawk Darrien Berrios Rivera put 7 of his 8 points on the board to pull away from the Lakers permanently. The score was 24-15 and only went up from there. Strong Cecil defense denied Garrett paint points, and good teamwork on offense sent the Seahawks into halftime with a 36-18 advantage.

In the second half Cecil worked on some set offens-

es against Garrett’s man-toman. The Seahawks also switched to a 2-3 defense to continue to pack the inside.

On a fast break early in the half, sophomore guard Frank Toney threw a pass off the backboard to Vernon Simmons for his second dunk of the game. Simmons had a game high of 23 points, 6 of which came from dunks.

With around 15 minutes left in the second half, the Seahawks were burying the Lakers in a 28 point lead. Sophomore Dominick Carrington put 10 of his 13 points on the board within 5 minutes of the half. The Seahawks did not let up, they put on a full court man press. At this point, Garrett had no answer, despite try-

ing man-to-man, a 1-3-1 defense, a 2-3, and various full court pressure defenses as well as different half court sets. Eventually both teams were able to rotate new players into the game.

Garrett’s Kamren Heathington came off the bench and put a quick 7 points on the board, as did Cecil’s Matthew Wallace. By the end of the game, both teams ran simple motion offenses without much pressure on defense. The final score was 93-57, Cecil. In addition to other players mentioned, Cecil’s Marlon Lewis and Jordan Strickland scored 10 and 12 points respectively.

Garrett’s Marquin Thompson had a team high of 15 points.
