West Nottingham Academy Wrestlers Know That Work Wins!

RISING SUN - West Nottingham Academy values work, and Wrestling is the ultimate “lunch pail” sport. After more than a decade absence from their Colora campus, the Rams returned to the mats last Winter with both boys and girls wrestling on their roster. One of those girls went on to place third at the National Prep School Tournament, which catapulted the program to recognition. In the months that followed Head Coach, Kacey Michelsen, put in the WORK to build a roster with experience and then issued a challenge to the incoming freshmen class. “I asked them to kick our program up a notch by sacrificing some of their July for camp at The United States Naval Academy so that we could get world class instruction from a legend, Coach Cary Kolat, and his staff. This group knows where I’d like our program to be in just a few short years, so they stepped up and completed five days - twelve training sessions at a world class leadership institution. The instruction,

effort, selflessness, and the team building were priceless. Camp for incoming wrestlers will be a tradition in this program - one that this group just established - and I’m confident that it will pay huge dividends as we build something special here at WNA. It’s what you do when nobody is watching that defines your true character and we know that hard work will produce results”. The incoming freshmen include three experienced grapplers in Michael Holmes (Philadelphia), Chase Pugh (North East) and Reagan Ramadan (North East) who, combined, have more than twelve years of experience on the mat. Holmes started wrestling in the Beat The Streets program in his home city, while Ramadan and Pugh began under Coach Tim Taylor in The Bay Brawlers Wrestling Club right here in Cecil County. The later became aware of WNA’s desire to build a program as a result of their club practicing on the WNA campus last winter. Both organizations established partnerships

with WNA that Coach Michelsen believes will be sustained in the years to come. Casey Beinkowski (Oxford) is new to wrestling, but she brings a toughness that she put on display daily while in Annapolis. These four will join thirteen returning wrestlers and Coach Michelsen is expecting that there will be more, “I’m thinking that we will have about twenty”, he said.

The wrestling team has strong support from their new Athletic Director, Kirsty Leedham. “As the new Athletic Director, it makes me extremely proud and excited to see some of our students attending a wrestling camp together during their summer vacation. I love that our Head Coach, Kacey Michelsen, facilitated the whole thing and created a memory for these students that will last a life-

time. Knowing I’m entering a school where the passion of the faculty shines bright, and they want to provide the best possible experiences for our students before they even get on campus shows such promise for the upcoming year, the development of our athletic programming, as well as the overall year to come”.

Cecil Golf Continues Strong Summer in Delaware State Junior Amateur

By: Andrew Barbin

Chesapeake Bay Golf Club in Rising Sun hosted the Delaware State Golf Association / Golf Association of Philadelphia’s 71st Annual Delaware Junior Amateur this past week on Wednesday and Thursday July 6th-7th. This was the fourth time in the past decade that Chesapeake Bay Golf Club has hosted this prestigious junior event (2012, 2015, 2019, 2022), and the sixth time Chesapeake Bay G.C. / Chantilly Manor has hosted the tournament (1987, 1995). This was also the first time the Delaware Junior was open to golfers from Philadelphia thanks to the DSGA and GAP’s merger earlier in the year, making this field arguably one of the strongest in the history of the event. Cecil County came out in full force to defend its home turf, with an outstanding twelve junior golfers representing the home club

in an effort to become the first Cecil County Delaware Junior titleholder since Austin Barbin’s 6-stroke victory in 2019. Chesapeake Bay GC was by far the most represented club, nearly doubling second place Wilmington Country Club. Headlining the home-team ticket was Evan Barbin, the 2021 Delaware High School State Champion, 2022 DIAA Golfer of the Year, and commit for #35 Liberty University. Barbin led Cecil’s efforts both days, carding a 2-under par round of 69 on Day 1, and a 1-under par round of 70 on Day 2 for a total of 3-under par 139. Despite some periodically sloppy play and some bad bounces, Barbin proved his resiliency multiple times. On day one, Barbin finished birdie-eagle on Chesapeake’s closing holes to keep within two strokes of the lead. On day two, Barbin drove OVER the third green (playing 330 yards) and got a bad kick

out of bounds, forcing him to take an early double bogey. Barbin would go on to make six birdies from there to bring him back into contention but fell two shots short of Wilmington Country Club’s Matt Homer. Homer made four consecutive birdies on holes 14 through 17 en route to his 6-under

136 total and the 71st State Junior Boys Title. Following right behind Barbin was North East High’s ace and reigning Maryland 1A/2A state champion Noah Wallace, who has recently gained nearly 50 yards of distance since last fall and looks to become even more dom-

inant going into his third year. Noah had a great tournament through 34 holes, finishing with a twoover 73 on the first day, and was steadily even par and in the hunt through his second round before a rough finish carding him with a five-over 76. His seven-over total was good

* On July 31, 1715, a hurricane strikes the East Coast of Florida, sinking 10 Spanish treasure ships carrying tons of gold and silver coins and killing nearly 1,000 people. About 80% of the treasures had been recovered by April 1716, but the rest remained lost until the 1960s.

for a tie for seventh place. Karina Serio of Tome School continued her recent breakthrough stretch of great play with a personal best score of 81 on day one, and rounded out with a 90 on day 2 for a total score of 171. Her third place finish was an excellent showing, and continues her emergence as one of the area’s best girl golfers. DuPont’s Meredith Finger won the girls title with her 7673=149 finish. Other notable performances from Team Chesapeake was Rising Sun’s Ben Adams, whose first round score of 82 was in a tie for 17th place. He slid back with his second-round performance of 89, but his 171 was good enough to finish 25th and as the third best Cecil golfer in the field. We also got a sneak preview of the two incoming freshman sensations, Wyatt Cudmore who will be joining Wallace at North East, and Lucas Kilgore who will playing for Rising Sun this fall. Both golfers strug-

gled in the first round, but finished strong on the second round, with Cudmore firing an 86 and Kilgore shooting a 90. Look for both golfers to put on a show this fall as North East and Rising Sun jockey for a state team title. Rounding out the scoring was recent Hodgson Vo-Tech grad Brandon Cohee, who shot backto-back competitive career best rounds of 93. Rising Sun’s rising seniors Johnny Waldridge and Jake Eckman both continued their fast improvement, with Waldridge shooting 94-96, and Eckman shooting 95-102. Bo Manor’s Braden Paris shot 105-103, Lincoln University’s Zack Sullivan shot 101-102, and Delmarva Christian’s Joel Perry finished 100-91 to complete Chesapeake Bay GC’s representation.

The victims had been invited to view the process of transporting loads of stone when a cable on a vacant car snapped, throwing them off the train and over a 34-foot cliff. * On July 28, 1868, following its ratification by the necessary three-quarters of U.S. states, the 14th Amendment, guaranteeing African Americans citizenship and all its privileges, is officially adopted into the U.S. Constitution. * On July 29, 1921, Adolf Hitler becomes the leader of the National Socialist German Workers’ (Nazi) Party. Rain Doesn’t Dampen Delaware Handicap By Scott Serio STANTON, DE - While rain may have kept the usually bustling crowds from enjoying an afternoon picnic in the grove adjacent to the track at Delaware Park this Saturday, it didn’t stop a record-setting performance from Miss Leslie in the 85th running of the Delaware Handicap. The 4-year-old mare is quickly becoming a local favorite after winning the Obeah Stakes at Delaware Park last month and then romping home by a record 12-lengths in the mud for her first graded stakes win. The win in the $500,000 race for Maryland-based trainer Claudio Gonzalez, jockey Angel Cruz and ownership group BB Horses,

in her third straight race, pushed Miss Leslie’s earnings ever-closer to the million dollar mark at $865,000. “This a good feeling because she won impressive,” winning trainer Claudio Gonzalez told Delaware Park racing information coordinator Chris Sobocinski. “She has been doing really good and she showed how well she is doing. When she goes long, she is an even better filly.” Delaware Park has been racing since 1937 and is currently running three or four days a week at the facility just off the Christiana Mall exit on I-95. Admission and parking are free and the track sports on of the best paddocks and picnic areas in all of thoroughbred racing.

Chesapeake City Tops Brunswick To Open State Softball Majors

By Scott Serio

Chesapeake City rode a one-hit pitching performance by Lyla Wescoat and big nights at the plate from Abigail Russell and Mia Felice to a 15-0 4-inning shutout against Brunswick to open the Maryland Little League Majors Softball Tournament in Elkton Monday night. Wescoat struck out eleven of the 12 batters she faced and only gave up one hit on a wobbly ground ball to third in the third inning. Runners also reached base against Wescoat on two walks and an error. She helped her own cause being patient at the plate, collecting three walks

and scoring three runs on the night. Offensively, Felice went 3-for-3, with a walk and scored two runs. Russell went 3-for-4 and scored three runs as well. Chesapeake City opened the scoring plating three runs in the bottom of the first. They then broke the game open in the third inning, batting around and getting eight more runs to push the game into Mercy Rule territory. They closed out the shutout scoring four more in the fourth and ended the game with catcher Lizzy Marcum running down the lone runner at third base for the final out.

Name the song that contains this lyric: “We can go dancing, we can go walking, as long as we’re together.” Answers 1. Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand had separately released their own covers (1977 and 1978). A radio station program director spliced together the two solo versions and played it on the air. The response was such that the record company had Streisand and Diamond record the duet. 2. Player, in 1977. Two members of the group wrote the song after breaking up with girlfriends. 3. “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” The original (“Mbube”) was released in 1939 in South Africa and written in Zulu. 4. “Hooked on a Feeling,” first done by B.J.
